In the neighboring Archaeological Museum, with its impressive collections of finds from the site, you will always remember the magnificent ‘Bronze Charioteer’. (B,D) DAY 5. TUESDAY • KAlAMBAKA - OHRID After breakfast, admire the fantastic landscapes of Meteora, known as “the rocks that fell from the sky.” Here monks built their rock-top monasteries, far away from civilization. Of the 13 large and 20 small monasteries and hermits’ cells, only 4 are now active. The most important is Megalo or Great Meteoro, of peculiar architecture with its tall and intricate dome, 12 sides and fine frescoes. We then continue across the border to Macedonia and on to Ohrid. (B,D) DAY 6. WEDNESDAY • OHRID - TIRANA A beautiful and popular lakeside resort, Ohrid has also been classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO for its cultural and spiritual attractions. Wandering among the narrow, romantic cobblestone streets in town, we visit the Cathedral of St. Sofia and pay special attention to some magnificent 10th century frescoes. In early afternoon, we cross another border en route to Tirana, Albania’s capital. (B,D) DAY 7. THURSDAY • TIRANA Tirana has much to offer to visitors. Our morning sightseeing tour takes you to Sheshi Skenderbej (Skanderbeg Square), the Palace of Culture, the
6
Acropolis, Athens mosaic on the façade of the National History Museum, the impressive, red-brick National Bank and the Ethem Bey Mosque. In the afternoon, explore Tirana on your own. (B) DAY 8. FRIDAY • TIRANA - DUBROVNIK When we leave Tirana after breakfast, we head to Albania’s second city, Shkoder on the shores of Lake Scutari. We stop for a brief sightseeing tour that includes Rozafa Castle. We then cross two borders (Montenegro and Croatia) on the way to Dubrovnik and catch our first glimpse of the Adriatic. (B,D) DAY 9. SATURDAY • DUBROVNIK Unlike any other city you have ever visited, Dubrovnik will beguile and fascinate you, as we explore its high points: the Rector’s Palace, the Bell Tower clock, Orlando’s Column and the Sponza Palace. We also see the Dominican Monastery and the Franciscan Monastery with its Pharmacy, one of the world’s oldest. The rest of the day is at leisure to bask on the sunny shores of the Adriatic or revisit some favorite sites. (B) DAY 10. SUNDAY • DUBROVNIK One day in this fabulous, old city is never enough.
