SPATA, The Society of Polish American Travel Agents, was created in New York City on August 18, 1959 by Messrs. Boleslaw Laszewski and Bronislaw Wegiel. In September of that same year the first edition of what was to become an annual SPATA convention was held in the Big Apple. SPATA has grown significantly since that first, 15 agency convention.
Today SPATA's membership has grown to over 150 active and associate member agencies, airlines, tour operators and firms with direct ties to promoting tourism to Poland, Central Europe and the nations of the former Soviet Union. SPATA's original values of improving the standards and reputation of the travel industry, following the highest ethical and moral standards of conduct, promoting tourism to Poland, Eastern Europe and elsewhere will never be abandoned and new goals are added each year. Thanks to the close bond of Polish patriotism between our members, SPATA has thrived for five decades and looks forward to a driven and friendly future.
SPATA and its members have been partners playing a crucial role in Polish tourism since their founding. An especially proud victory was the reinstatement of air routes between the USA and Poland in 1980s. This was a time of martial law. Lot Polish Airlines, Poland's national air carrier, was banned by President Ronald Reagan from operating flights to the United States.
SPATA was instrumental in restoring Lot's air route privileges, and members who recall that effort do so with a sense of purpose, fondness and camaraderie. In January 2001, SPATA accomplished a long time goal: the renaming of Okecie International Airport to Fryderyk Chopin.
During an annual convention over ten years ago, SPATA's active members prepared a formal resolution to convince the government to rename the airport. Bolstered by their success, SPATA's members continue to prepare formal resolutions at every annual convention.
