Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club: Frankenstein

Science Fiction and Fantasy Book Club meets monthly to discuss compelling titles within this genre, which features very real, human stories. New members are always welcome! February’s selection is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Published in 1818, when Shelley was just 18, this classic laid the foundation for today’s science fiction.

Hearing Loss Resource Fair • All Ages

Stop by to learn about local resources available to members of the deaf, deafblind, and hard of hearing community. The fair will highlight services available for children, families, and school staff. All ages are welcome! The resource fair will be held throughout the Main Library, on the Superior Street level and second floor. Thurs. February 13 10:00 am -4:00 pm

Gunflint Falling: Author Talk with Cary Griffith

Learn about one of the most bizarre and devastating weather events to occur in our region’s history. Author Cary Griffith will share Gunflint Falling: Blowdown in the Boundary Waters, which tells the story of this catastrophic meteorological event that occurred on July 4, 1999 in the Boundary Waters. Builders Club • Ages 5 and Older

Do you love to build stuff? Choose a design challege or freebuild on your own with Keva planks, K’nex, Squigz, cardboard construction tools and other household materials for building.

Eggcellent Science • Grades 2-5

For those who love to build, featuring classic LEGO® fun. All sessions have a theme and various challenges—builders can take on a themed project or just free build, letting their imaginations guide their creations. Geared to kids ages 5 and up!

Master Gardeners Series: Winter Sowing • Adults

As local gardeners know, the growing season is a short one. Master Gardener Amy Johnson will show us how to get an early start by sowing seeds in winter. She will also share how to recycle household plastics (milk jugs, etc) into tools for our gardens. Register on the library events calendar to receive the Zoom link. Thurs. Genealogy: Solving Brick Walls • Adults

“Brick walls” refer to the points at which genealogical researchers get stuck, unable to make further progress in tracing their genealogical history. Drop by the Local History Center during this research support session for tips, resource ideas, and a second set of eyes to look at your research. Let’s work together to solve your brick wall! Family, Friend, and Neighbor Child Care Info Night • Adults

Do you care for the child of a family member, friend, or neighbor? Interested in starting to provide care? Family Storytime & Play • Birth to Pre-K

Start the morning with stories, rhymes, songs, and movement geared toward children from birth to preschool and their grownups. Afterwards, continue learning through play that builds both large and fine motor skills and helps get those wiggles out. Wednesdays 10:15-11:30 am Gold/Green

Baby Storytime • Birth to 24 Months

Join us for a brief storytime, ideal for babies birth-24 months. Stay afterwards for some early literacy playtime and socialization. Thursdays 10:15-10:45 am Gold

Twin Ports Genealogical Society Meeting • Adults

The Twin Ports Genealogical Society promotes general interest in genealogy, including support for individuals’ research. Attend the monthly meeting in person or register for the Zoom link.

Sourdough 101 • Adults

Knead a new hobby? Baker Stacia Donovan will lead a class for beginners to learn about the joys and process of sourdough. Participants will receive a how-to guide and flour to get started, as supplies last. No registration needed.

Presented by Randolph Beebe and the Northern Lakes Archaeological Society. Learn about arctic explorers Samuel Hearne, Sir John Franklin, and George Back by way of Beebe’s own 3800 mile journey over rugged arctic wilderness. Beebe will share photos of his trip along with historical information.
