Bring on the Dubs!

Louth will contest their first Leinster Final since 2010 after seeing off offaly in a pulsating semi-final last Sunday.

The victory gives Mickey harte’s men a chance to banish the demons that still linger from that Leinster final against Meath in 2010 when victory was snatched at the death as Joe Sheridan illegally threw the ball into the net to give the Royals the most controversial of victories.

Standing in Louth’s way are Leinster kingpins Dublin who have won no less than 17 of the last 18 Leinster Finals with only that Meath win in 2010 disrupting their dominance of the provincial scene over the past 18 years.

having enjoyed a successful league campaign in division two, where

they finished in third place behind Derry and Dublin, hopes were high that Louth could reach the promised land of a provincial final by beating offaly. A week earlier Louth had dramatically overcome Westmeath having come back from eight points down at half-time to eventually win by two points. Debutant Dylan McKeown, from the Dundalk Gaels, got Louth of to a flying start against the Faithful’s scoring two early points to justify Mickey harte’s selection.

Newtown Blues man Ciaran Downey looked right at home in the vast expanses of Croke Park and his five first half points helped Louth go in level at 0-9 to 1-6 at half-time with Peter Cunningham scoring a goal for offaly five minutes before the break.

Offaly began the second half well and took a two point lead but Louth responded brilliantly by scoring six unanswered points in a devastating six minute spell to put them four points clear with fifteen minutes remaining. Louth had their chances

to kill the game off with Sam Mulroy seeing not one but two goalbound shots cleared off the line as Offaly somehow survived. the midlanders took full advantage of that double save as they chipped away at Louth’s lead before sending the game into extra-time with Anton Sullivan

leveling the game in the 74th minute.

Louth supporters nerves were thankfully eased pretty quickly during extra-time with Mickey harte’s side superior fitness shining through as they kicked five points unanswered with Sam Mulroy showing his undoubted class by scoring four of those five. St Mochtas man Craig Lennon also scored a couple of points late on to seal a 0-27 2-15 victory for Louth.

Louth will now face Dublin in a Leinster final for the first time since 1958 and will contest just their second Leinster Final in 63 years but manager Mickey harte knows

that there is much more work to be done ahead of that showdown.

“We as a team can’t celebrate it because there is nothing to celebrate. We have to perform well in the Leinster Final because if not that would actually deflate the work we put in. it’s a big challenge to be competitive because they have the potential to rip us apart. We have to really work hard to be competitive. that’s our target for the next two weeks,” stated harte.

Unequal access to personal transport schemes continues for people with disabilities

DEPUty Peter Fitzpatrick and the Regional Group of tDs have raised a private members’ motion recognising that people with disabilities are not receiving the support to live independently and lead active lives within our communities due to a lack of transport supports to meet their needs.

Deputy Fitzpatrick states that “transport costs are an extra living cost that people with disabilities cannot afford, which gets more difficult as the cost-of-living increases”. Affirming this, the Indecon report entitled “the Cost of Disability in Ireland” confirms that living with a disability adds on average an additional €9,027 to the cost of living explicitly relating to disability, transport and mobility.

“People with disabilities need access to affordable public and personal transport. however, many people with disabilities are confined to home, unable to engage on an equal basis in employment or their community as they cannot access Government support to help with their personal transport needs,” Deputy Fitzpatrick said.

“Our Private Members motion to be debated next thursday in the Dáil focuses on the introduc-

tion of a new integrated transport scheme for people with disabilities and their carers that ensure flexible arrangements that meet the needs of the individual and are in compliance with the ‘Equal Status Acts’”. in February 2022, Deputy Fitzpatrick and the Regional Group tDs received full party support for a similar motion. however, since then, the Government has done nothing and continues to fail people with disabilities, their families, and their carers with their delay in action. it is more than ten years since the Government suspended the motorised transport grant and mobility allowance and has done little to address these issues.

Some of the Regional Group recommendations include: provide funding and introduce

Ruairí O’Murchú raises issues with cost of public liability insurance

a comprehensive transport support scheme to replace the Mobility Allowance and Motorised transport Grant.

reinstate and amend the Primary Medical Certificate process in line with the social model of disability and based on a broader spectrum of considerations rather than strict, narrow criteria, which presently is not fit for purpose.

Address issues concerning the eligibility criteria for the schemes with immediate effect.

Reintroduce payment of a cash allowance like the mobility allowance so that people with disabilities and their families have the flexibility and reliable door-to door transport for urgent appointments.

invest in transport infrastructure that considers and supports accessibility, mobility, and inclusion for people with a disability.

Deputy Fitzpatrick also noted that ireland is a signatory to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which places an onus on signatories to provide access to transportation on an equal basis to enable persons with disabilities to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of life, yet Government is ignoring this.

iSSUES with the cost of, and access to, public liability insurance for businesses in the tourism sector was selected as a topical issue for Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú last week in Leinster house.

the Dundalk tD highlighted how while there had been a 5% reduction in motor insurance costs in the first six months of last year, it was not nearly enough and businesses seeking a renewal of public liability insurance had seen a 14% increase in prices.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘there are huge numbers of SMEs and businesses in the entertainment, tourism and leisure sectors that cannot get insurance and cannot get premiums they are fit to pay.

‘We all know that there probably is not a company in ireland that uses inflatables for its operations that can get the sort of insurance it requires. that is shocking. i would have always thought that when an issue reached a critical point that the system, with all its flaws, would catch it. Sometimes there is a major level of drift, and this is not acceptable.

‘Brendan Kenny, the CEO of ireland’s Association for Adventure tourism, has spoken of 250

businesses that are threatened with closure.

‘We talk about the tourism sector and how we want to sell ireland, but any closures will have a massive impact. We are already in disastrous waters and are heading into far worse waters. We really need to call a halt to what is going on.

‘the buck stops with the Government, the Minister of State, the Minister for Finance and with others who deal with the insurance sector.

‘A number of companies in my constituency have had issues too. there were also insurance issues at one stage with regard to childcare. We need to have an operational public liability insurance system that will work for

SMEs or we are going to hit the wall’.

in response, Minister of State Jennifer Carroll McNeill said the reductions in insurance had been achieved ‘because of the programme of reform that the Government has instituted regarding insurance: changing the law on perjury and fraud and changing the operating environment for personal injuries, particularly soft tissue and small injuries that were being overwhelmingly litigated in courts’.

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘i welcome any news regarding any new players coming into the market. Obviously, we need them to come into the market and then offer something that is fair and reasonable.

‘We really need to make sure we are not dealing with the madness of the issue i brought up before with the community centre in my own local area having to raise over €12,000 through GoFundMe.

‘At this time, there are a number of reforms being brought through.

‘We have reached an absolute crisis period, so we need to make sure that this done swiftly.

Charity match in memory of Pte Seán Rooney

TheRe will be a charity football match taking place soon called ‘The Seán Rooney Memorial Cup’ commemorating the life of Pte Seán Rooney held in Oriel Park on Saturday 9th December – 3pm. The two teams will consist of the Rooney XI –made up of Seán’s family and friends, and the other team will consist of the Army Representative XI – made up of his friends and colleagues from the army who served Seán within the army from around the country. Seán Rooney was a 24-year-old from Muirhevnamor, Dundalk who served as a soldier in the Irish Defence Force who tragically passed away last year on the 14th December

in Lebanon. Pte Rooney, who was part of a joint Irish-Polish peacekeeping group was shot in the village of Al-Aqbiya in an attack as he was heading to Beirut International Airport to drop off two soldiers for a flight back home. He was described by many as a ‘national hero’ for his efforts in serving the military.

It was one of his best friends’ Crístoir Ó’Neill who came up with this idea of a commemoration match as it will be coming up to the one-year anniversary of his death. There will be a post-match function taking place with a fund-raising raffle taking on also, all funds will be kindly donated to Rainbows Ireland Child & Youth Grief and Loss Support CLG. Everybody is welcome to come along

and celebrate the life of Seán on the day.

There was a tribute paid for Seán at the recent Dundalk FC v Derry City match in Oriel Park, with a minute silence being observed on the 24th minute, with a similar tribute being shown in Brandywell earlier this season. He was an avid Derry City supporter, so it was a moment of class being shown by his close connections.

If anyone is interested in sponsoring the ‘SR7 Cup’, either a donation or a prize for ‘Rooney’s Raffle’ or you are interested in finding out more details about this event, you can get in contact with them via Facebook or Instagram or email them on seanrooneycup@gmail.com.

All volunteers encourage everyone to contribute in some way to try

and spread awareness to those suffering mentally or those impacted by suicide. Last year over €4 million was raised nationally, and over €100,000 locally.

Darkness into Light was originally set up in 2017 by Pieta house as a fundraiser to bring guidance and support to those affected by suicide or who are currently in suicidal distress due to the rising numbers of suicide deaths in ireland.

Pieta offers 24/7 help

to those in need and your donations can help them improve their services. the occasion usually brings a good turn out especially to those in Dundalk as over 3,000 people sign up for on average each year.

Local Fianna Fáil councillor and Chairman of ‘Darkness into Light’ Seán Kelly said that the cause meant very much to him and was delighted with the contribution over the past number of years. “i believe that the fundraiser is impor-

tant to raise awareness around this specific topic, it is one that i care about, and i want to help anyone out who is struggling at this time”. the movement is only going to continue growing and due to the minimal Covid-19 restrictions; we encourage everyone to do their bit for the for this worthy cause and for the prevention of suicide.
