LOUTH'S love affair with the Rose of Tralee contest will continue again this year after another hopeful from the Wee County was selected to compete in the finals in August. Carlingford girl, Ailís Hughes, will be representing Dubai in the prestigious finals after coming through the regional heats in Portlaoise over the weekend. Unfortunately, she won’t be joined on stage in Kerry by the Louth Rose, Ciara Soraghan, who just missed out on making it through after an intense battle for one of the 23 places on offer. However, she will be one of the many people from Louth heading to Tralee to

The community in Louth village have come out to support the devastated family of hit and run victim Keith Byrne by offering a substantial reward for information leading to a conviction. Keith had been walk-
ing home after a night out with friends when Gardai believe he was struck by a vehicle a short distance from his home in Carnalogue in Louth Village in the early hours of Sunday May 11. He was found by a passing motorist
but had suffered fatal injuries. Keith’s brother, John and sister Niamh Hoey appeared on Crimecall last week appealing for the driver to come forward or anyone with some information. In making the ap-
peal John Byrne described Keith as a great brother. “Myself and Keith worked together for eight or nine years. To think now that we’ll never get the chance to work together again it’s hard to accept. It’s
very hard to accept.” His sister Niamh also appealed for people to come forward. “Everytime we walk out our front door we can see where Keith was killed. We’re grieving Keith but somebody knows some-

They were detained at Drogheda and Dundalk Garda Stations under the provisions of Section 30 Offences Against the State Act. The two other males have been released and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. The incident prompted concerns about the
danger that the device posed in the area. Minister for the Department of Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald said that: “While it would not be appropriate to comment in detail. What I will say is that there is a real and persistent threat posed by certain paramilitary groups on this island whose aim is a return to the misery and bloodshed of past decades,” In the dail last week she added “These people

Brendan McCoy heading to Africa with Plan Ireland A group of Irish firemen have embarked on an epic journey from Ireland to West Africa as they bring a fire engine, an ambulance and a fire tender to Niger as part of Plan Ireland’s Fire Engine to Niger Project. Joining Dundalk fireman Brendan McCoy and Drogheda fire station officer Peter Leahy are Derek McGuinness from Dublin Fire Brigade and Darren Geary and Stephen Mullan from Monaghan Fire and Rescue. The team left on June 1 for the 14-day trip with the three vehicles are being shipped to the Port of Cotonou in Benin, West Africa. The volunteers will collect them from the port and take them on an arduous bone-jarring four-day journey across Benin to Niger. The vehicles will

be delivered to the city of Zinder and the team will train the fire-fighters there. The project first began in 2010 when Irish fire-fighters heard of the grossly under resourced fire services in the region and they decided to do something to help. One of the founders of the project, Brendan McCoy, explained that that when he was Chair-
man for the Retained Fire Service of Ireland he met personnel from Plan Ireland who had just returned from the city of Zinder in Niger. They told him about the non-existent fire and rescue service there and asked if he could help with its development. “After this meeting I was hooked. I made a promise to assist and the project started from
there. A two- year-old fire engine was donated from Dublin Fire Brigade and the hard task of collecting money to send it and a team to Africa began. Since the project started we have delivered four fire engines, one ambulance and two emergency tenders,” he explained. The three vehicles being shipped over are a fire engine donated by

was subsequently spoken to by Gardai in relation to the incident. Solicitor, Paula Tiernan, stated that her client had very poor English and didn’t realise he had to report the incident. He admitted having no insurance and having a Chinese licence which was not valid here. She added that the student had €500 compensation for the injured party. Judge William Hamill then heard that the defendant had previously been stopped by
Gardai on August 30, 2012 and as a result had been disqualified for two years on a no insurance charge when he appeared in court after this second matter. “So a year later he still has no insurance so there is no question that he didn’t know he needed insurance. He ignores all that and goes out and drives”, noted the judge who imposed a €500 fine and four year disqualification in relation to the no insurance, and €150 fine for failing to remain at the scene.
County Limerick, an emergency road based tender donated by Louth Fire and Rescue and an ambulance donated by the company Navartis in Cork. Cork County Fire and Rescue donated 30 sets of road traffic extraction equipment (called ‘jaws of life’). Brendan McCoy added, “Zinder was chosen because this was the area described to me at the first meeting with Plan Ireland. The officials of the region of Zinder also embraced our project and worked tirelessly assisting us in developing a fire and rescue service within their region. The region of Niamey will also be visited on this trip and instruction delivered to personnel there with a view to hopefully developing that area.”

Combined efforts continue to help tackle smuggling By Niamh Kirk
Gardai and Revenue officers are involved in joint operations, and working in conjunction with their Northern counterparts in a continuing effort to tackle the illegal diesel and smuggling in North Louth. The combined efforts are paying off as recently discoveries were made in relation to a mobile oil laundry operation, while cigarettes and cash were also seized. Last week as a result of ongoing, joint, intelligence-led investigation with Her Majesty’s Revenue & Customs (HMRC), officers from Revenue’s Customs Service backed up by An Garda Síochána seized approximately 581,000 smuggled cigarettes in North Louth. The cigarettes have an estimated retail value of €278,880 and potential loss to the exchequer of €234,400.
A further 26,000 litres of mineral oil were seized for suspected licensing offences and approximately €60,000 of cash was seized under the proceeds of crime legislation. Two vehicles were also seized as part of the investigations. A series of premises on the border in both Louth and Armagh were searched under warrant. Three premises in the Ballybinaby and the Castleroche area of North Louth were searched by officers from Revenue’s Customs Service. The joint operations were assisted by the tobacco and cash detection dogs. Searches carried out by HMRC in the South Armagh area resulted in the seizure of documents, computers and telephones. These seizures are part of Revenue & HMRC’s on-going investigations into the organised crime gangs involved in cross border
smuggling and the evasion of excise duties. Customs say that investigations are continuing in both jurisdictions, and internationally. As well as uncovering smuggled cigarettes, an investigations into the increased presence of dissident republicans and the rise in paramilitary activity uncovered a mobile oil laundry in Kilcurry. In this separate operation the mobile oil laundering unit was seized by Gardai investigating recent paramilitary activity in the area. The laundering equipment, concealed in a cow trailer, included a filtration system, pump and a bleaching agent mixing container which is transported by the trailer to different sites to carry out oil laundering activity. This unit was capable of processing 20,000 litres per operation. Investigations are on-going.

I would like to gain industry experience there, designing commercially for a large commercial company while saving for a Masters, which I would ideally undertake at the Royal College of Art in London”, he explained. Young gardeners are out in force
Young Gardeners and their mentors.
By Niamh Kirk
The young gardeners of Blackrock were out in force with their mums and gardening mentors to celebrate the official launch of their own sally garden. A children’s herb garden is part of the Eco-Tribes: Biodiversity Challenge that was developed by Louth County Council to
encourage environmental social activism in the area. The Sally Garden is at the heart of the Biodiversity garden in Blackrock which is run by the local branch of Tidy Towns and local children. Complete with hand woven willow tree installations contains the selection of herbs. The children are encouraged
to take ownership of the gardens care for the herbs including mint, chives and fennel as well as using them in sustainable way.
A taste of fruits of their labour was there for everyone to try with fresh snacks and drinks made from the herbs from the budding garden.
Challenging end to Transition Year By Evin Quigley TransitionYear students from De La Salle College rounded off an eventful term on a challenging note when they took to the Cooley Mountains for a trek. The 32 students and two teachers arrived in Ravensdale for 9.30pm and with the bus not returning for collection until 3pm, the
boys knew they were in for a busy day on the hills. After a couple of breaks for refreshments, the group reached their appointed destination. Some then proceeded to take on the highest point taking in views of the Isle of Man and Sugar Loaf in Wicklow. The efforts were rewarded with a very welcome barbecue back at base.

in the Cooley Mountains which was something that was really good fun and it just showed how close a group we are and close we have become over the past year, which is one of the other reasons why I enjoyed the year so much. Now this is something you can only see in a big event or gathering; for instance we had our Transition Year Graduation Night last Thursday and it was mentioned to me by a friend’s parent, that we all “seemed like a very close-knit bunch” and to be honest I think she was right. Before the presentations started we were all gathered together, just talking to each other, shooting the breeze, etc.
And when I went back to sit with my mother as the presentations were about to begin and she kept asking me questions like “Who’s that boy?” and “How come you never mentioned him before?” But I wasn’t going to say things like “He’s just from my class”, no, I would introduce them as my friends, but we wouldn’t really think about it. We wouldn’t think of ourselves as our classes from the junior cycle anymore, we would all be equal, every one of us. And this is a great thing, because some people might have very contrasting interests, but we were all able to come together and bond over all the projects that we did

(Even if they weren’t always that successful!) Like if we had to have a night like that this time last year, some of the boys would hardly know each other’s names, but now we know everything about each other (well…nearly) and it’s a brilliant thing I believe, because now we have new friends And they’re from somewhere different, not just school, but from a different part of school, now we will remember them from all the trips we went on, etc. And this was probably the main reason why I enjoyed transition year so much, well it was always nice to have the odd day out of the classroom too. As a student who has just completed his Transition Year course, and is now ready to do nothing for the summer and be fully charged for the new challenge that will be fifth year. I must add that I enjoyed it very much, not just because we weren’t doing exams and all the old boring stuff on the school curriculum, but because of the different activities we got to do that we would never be able to do if we had to be covering coursework, like just last week, we went up to the Titanic Exhibition in Belfast, which was an experience to say the least! And then the very next day, two of our teachers brought us on a hill walk

Head of Dundalk Karate, Mary Marcus said “They were all under pressure but took to the tatami matts like pros and even though they didn’t manage to take home a medal to add to Dundalk Karate’s increasing medal haul, they not only impressed me on how they can perform under immense pressure, but a number of other Sensei’s commented on how much they had improved since they saw them at an earlier competition in April.”
Crashed jeep after leaving party A man who left a party in a jeep belonging to the mother of his friend crashed into a building before leaving the scene of the accident. John Finnegan of 59 Oldbridge, Toberona, caused €6,760 worth of damage to the jeep and considerable damage to the medical centre in Blackrock during the incident on Tuesday February 18
this year. Dundalk District Court heard that on that date Gardai were called to the scene of the accident in Blackrock where a vehicle had crashed into a barrier and left. When they established the owner of the vehicle it emerged that the defendant and the owner’s son had been at a house party when the defendant was given
the keys of the jeep to leave people home. Mr Finnegan made a full admission to Gardai and pleaded guilty to having no licence, no insurance and failing to give appropriate information. No compensation was paid. Mr Finnegan’s solicitor stated that his client had a bad history of addiction to drink and drugs, but had made ef-
forts to deal with these issues. He had relapsed at the time of this incident but had since returned to Victory Outreach. Mr Finnegan handed a letter into the court outlining his desire to be given an opportunity to deal with his problems and Judge William Hamill adjourned the case to August 28 for Probation and Community Service reports.

Action from last year’s raft race
Blackrock Tidy Towns are finalising their preparations for this year’s Raft Race & Family Fun Day which takes place on Sunday June 15. A full programme of events has been planned including a treasure hunt, a sandcastle competition, a recital at the Sundial by Dundalk Brass Band, a schools talent competition, and of course the raft race itself. The new Coastguard helicopter will also make an appearance
unless it is called to deal with an emergency, and Dundalk Cricket Club will again entertain with their “Cricket on the Beach”. The Admiral for this year will be Larry Tuite who captained “The Black Pig” which won the raft race each year from 1996 to 2004. Harry Lee will be the compere for the afternoon once more, and Kate Smyth will be commentator for the raft race. At the recent launch chair-
man John Horan thanked all the sponsors and the bodies who provided grants. Thus far 27 rafts had registered to take part, representing businesses and organisations from the village and further afield. Last year’s winners, the Dundalk Mens Shed team, are not participating this year, so the race is wide open. In conjunction with the raft race the Tidy Towns are running a bumper raffle.
Ailís books her place in Rose of Tralee finals “I can’t believe I’ve made it to the Rose of Tralee finals and I intend to enjoy every minute of it” promised Ailís. “I’ve been teaching in Dubai for just over a year now having spent three years working in London. I got involved with the Rose of Tralee through the Irish society over here and I’m delighted I went for it. I’ll have a big crew from Carlingford and South Armagh coming down to Tralee to support me and I know we’ll all have a great time down there”, she added. “I am a travel addict so Dubai is the perfect base for this, and I have travelled to most continents with the hope of seeing more in the next few years. My utmost favourite thing in life is laughing and I’m sure there will be plenty of that going on in Tralee”, concluded Ailís. Despite missing out, Ciara Soraghan, was also thrilled to have experienced being part of the Rose of Tralee

competition. Ciara from Haggardstown was crowned Louth Rose last month and headed to Portlaoise last weekend as she competed with 59 other Roses for one of the 23 final places on offer. Despite impressing the judges with a fantastic version of ‘Use Somebody’ by Kings of Leon Ciara narrowly missed out on making it through to the televised stages of the popular event.
Ciara Soraghan
Ciara and her travelling army of supporters made their way to Portlaoise last weekend and according to the newly crowned Louth Rose it was a weekend to remember for everybody. “We had a fantastic weekend in Portlaoise and we all really enjoyed ourselves on what was a brilliant weekend. I was first up in qualifying and although it was a nervewracking experience I enjoyed it and it was great to get talking to
Daithí O Sé. I sang a piano-led version of Use Somebody by the Kings of Leon and although I didn’t qualify for the finals I’m delighted to have been a part in the whole thing”, explained Ciara. “All the girls were great down there and it must have been very tough for the judges to pick just 23 out of 60 Roses as they were all fantastic. I’m going down to Tralee in August to cheer on Ailís”, she said.

Yarn’s and Rhymes from Paddy and Angela McGinn
Paddy and Angela McGinn, long time residents in Dundalk and notable contributors to the Sunday Miscellany, have released a new book. Padraig was in Dundalk last week to promote the ‘random and risqué’ compilation book. “All the stories are true, and some actually happened,” said Padraig of the stories in the book which range from recalling two Dundalk men having an ‘I’m more Dundalk than you’ dispute, to the perils of Dundalk dating in the 50s. Padriag and Angela’s acute and detailed memory, elegant way with words and jovial sense of humour make the ‘Yarns’ more a vibrant and entertaining social history of the area down through the years. The McGinns lived in Dundalk for more than 30 years, Padraig having worked in the ESB and travelled the North East thoroughly with the ‘Rural Electrification Scheme.’ Later he became a teacher in the Ar-
Padrig McGinn.
dee Community School before moving to the west to take up the role as principal in a secondary school in Carrickon-Shannon. He was straight laced teacher, “strict but fair,” he said. Pat and his wife Angela moved on from Dundalk but with family still in the area they are regular visitors. Padraig was accompanied by his daughter Mary who said she was very surprised to discover the somewhat cheeky side to their parents when she grew up. His knowledge of Louth and the individual
characteristics of the locality as well as being peppered with the local lingo makes Yarns and Rhymes is a playful look back showing how much and how little some things have changed. Some of Dundalk’s best known but since passed characters are brought back to life in the tongue in cheek stories of nights in, nights out, disastrous doctors and much more. Many local families are sure to find some scandal and craic from their forbearers. Padraig’s witty poetry and animated short stories were performed regularly in RTE’s Sunday Miscellany but he says he was always reluctant to get up on stage himself. But his and Angela’s sense of humour and warmth come through on the page making Yarns and Rhymes a must read for lovers of local history. The book Yarns and Rhymes is available in Conor Hughes Blackrock, The Louth County Library and Carrolls Bookshop on Park St.

Dance championships bring tourism boost to Dundalk
Dancers pictured at the launch of the Ulster Dancing Championships
Dundalk is set for a major tourism boost with the news that the town will host the Ulster Dancing Championship (Oireachtas Rince Uladh 2014) after a 25 year absence. This is a great boost for the region as together with the obvious social and cultural benefits such an event brings to Dundalk, there are of course the economic benefits, with over 5,000 visitors expected over both June and November weekends. Sean Farrell, Dundalk Tourism Chairperson, is delighted
to welcome back the event which he believes is an excellent opportunity for Dundalk to showcase the best the town has to offer. “Dundalk Tourism Committee under the auspices of Dundalk Chamber of Commerce have given a commitment to fully support The Ulster Dancing Championships 2014 so as to ensure it is a renowned success. “On behalf of The Dundalk Tourism Committee, Sean wished to take the opportunity to offer his gratitude to Sinéad
Roche (Dundalk BIDs and Tourist Office) who worked tirelessly with An Coimisiún le Rincí Gaelacha and who was pivotal in securing Dundalk as the host town for the championships”, he stated. Meanwhile, Dundalk Tourism Officer, Sinead Roche, also welcomed the announcement. “Hosting the 2014 Ulster Dance Championships is another amazing opportunity for Dundalk to step up to the mark and show the country what we are made of. It is 25 years since
we last had this opportunity and we would ask the entire tourism, hospitality and retail industry come together as we did for the Giro to welcome the competitors to town. “A community approach works and it encourages event organisers to choose Dundalk as an event or conference destination. It is not a coincidence that significant opportunities are coming our way, it is as a result of the ‘can do’ attitude that local people and the local business community have”, she added.

Role of volunteers is underlined There were over 100 representatives from various community groups and organisations from all over Louth at the last Community and Voluntary Forum Conference which took place on May 15 in the Boyne Valley Hotel. The theme of the Conference was “Our Community, Our Voice” the importance of this theme was backed up by John Lonergan, Louth County Council Cathaoirleach Declan Breathnach and the Forum’s chairperson Kevin Moran especially at a time where there are a lot of changes currently going on in the community sector and local government. To facilitate people’s voices being heard there were a number of discussion tables covering a wide number of issues which before the conference was submitted to the Forum from commu-

nity groups, these topics ranged from Youth Issues to attracting a new type of Volunteer. Anthony McArdle who was the MC for the event reinforced the idea that it is the volunteers who are at the core of the community and that they should not be forgotten about for all the great work and their commitment to organisations as he said “The work of the volunteer is vital in our community, it should not be underestimated or
taken for granted”. The chairperson of the Community and Voluntary Forum talked about all the achievements the forum had over the course of the year such as providing members with social media training to help them raise the profile of their community groups. He hoped the good work will continue in the future with the new structures coming onboard in the Community and Voluntary sector.
“The Louth Community and Voluntary Forum has had a busy year providing training for members and improving opportunities to connect the voice of the community with decision makers. We will ensure that the voice of the community is at the heart of future developments in Louth”, stated Mr Moran. The conference report will be available in the coming weeks on www. louthcommunityforum. ie.
Jamie’s CD provides funds for charity By Paul Byrne
Three charities are currently benefiting from the generosity of Stonetown teenager Jamie Malone who has released his very first CD which he has called ‘Footprints’. The first year Inver College student launched his CD last November and has sold 124 copies to date raising an impressive €1200 for charity. All proceeds from the eight track CD have been divided equally between Cara Cancer Support Centre, Ronald McDonald House in Crumlin as well as SOSAD. Talented 13-year-old Jamie has been playing guitar since he was eight years old and according to his mother Martina he was inspired to record a CD after suffering three heartbreaking family

losses over the past couple of years. “Jamie absolutely loves music and he wanted to record a CD for charities close to our heart following the recent deaths of his Grandad to cancer, his aunty to suicide and his brother who died when just ten years old”, explained Martina. “Jamie was determined to do something
to remember them all by and he decided to release a CD of some of his favourite songs. We found a recording studio in Killanny last summer where he recorded an eight track CD with songs by Coldplay, Oasis and Bruce Springsteen. The CD is called ;’Footprints’ and is available for €10 with all proceeds divided between the three chosen
charities. “Myself and Jamie’s dad Raymond are extremely proud of Jamie and we think it’s a huge achievement for a young fellow. We’d also like to thank Jamie’s guitar teacher Paul Finn from The Flaws”, added Martina . Last week Jamie presented a cheque for €415 to Denise in SOSAD Carrickmacross.
Netwell volunteer opportunities in Dundalk In Dundalk, almost 60 people of all ages invest their time, talents and energy to make a positive contribution to their community by volunteering with the Netwell Centre to support positive ageing for older people. Ann Marron from the Netwell Centre is calling on people to give their time to make a difference to others. “We match our volunteers with an older person living in their local area to provide social home visits. Visits
then continue weekly on a one-to-one basis in the older person’s home. Most visits last for an hour and usually involve nothing more than a cup of tea and chat with the older friend. “Firm friendships are forged between the volunteers and the older people, with many volunteers visiting the same person for many years. Some volunteers also give their time and talents to support day trips for older people across County Louth
and our weekly social groups for older people in Dundalk. “This simple gift, of time and company, makes a huge difference to an older person experiencing loneliness and isolation”, explained Ann. If you are interested in volunteering with the Netwell Centre on the social home visiting progamme or with Netwell older people’s social groups, please contact: Ann Marron at 9370360 or Pat Tel: 087 9370361.

Giro decorations help charity Dundalk businesses and residents threw their all into tickling Dundalk pink for the Giro d’Italia’s flying visit but with the riders having completed their trip around Italy you might be wondering what to do with the pale
pink decorations. Instead of getting rid of them, Dundalk Tourist Office at the Market Square is asking that you donate them. Tourism Officer Sinéad Roche was contacted by Larry Clarke on behalf of Navan Road Cycling
Club who fundraise for the ARC Cancer Support Centre. They are hosting an exhibition next month to highlight the Giro celebrations in Ireland and how each town along the route was ‘pinked.’ The decoration donations
will help the cycling club make the most of the reflective exhibition. All donations from entry into the exhibition will be donated to the charity The Tourist Office is open Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 5.30pm.
Dundalk athletes gets ready for National Game From Page 1 for coaches and one to one carers. That means we had to raise about €10,000 to ensure all of our athletes get a chance to compete in Limerick next week. Thankfully we have managed to raise the full amount thanks to
the generosity of people around the county”, noted Eilish. “It’s all systems go for Limerick now that the money has been raised and we can concentrate on winning a few medals. We are bringing down eleven athletes in total including five swim-
mers, five track and field athletes and one ten pin bowler”, added Eilish. In total, 1,500 athletes from all four corners of Ireland will make the trip to Limerick to ensure that this year’s event will be the biggest yet. The Special Olympics Ireland games
take place in Limerick between June 12 and 15, with the opening ceremony is on Thursday and games themselves starting the following day Friday. There is plenty at stake for the athletes with places at next years World Games in Los Angeles up for grabs.

St Nicholas Pre-School Graduation
There were scenes of delight in St. Nicholas’ Primary School as the youngest class of pre-schoolers graduated from their first year. Mums, dads and extended families went along to see what the youngsters have learned in their first few months in school and beamed with pride as they performed songs for the audience. Teachers Lorraine McArdle and Breda Hughes congratulated their little learners and commended them for their hard work all year and telling parents that they should all be very proud. Rijis Bacuks presented his Múinteoir Lorraine with a bunch of flowers before starting his summer holidays. Women’s Aid welcome confirmation of funding By Niamh Kirk
Women’s Aid future is secure now that the Section 10 funding allocated to the running costs of the refuge has been reinstated. There were 32 days left until the emergency refuge gfor the victims of fdomestic abuse was to -close when the service mlevel agreement giving n€50k per year was esigned between the two parties. Sandra Farrell, Women’s Aid Dundalk facilitator said that now the funding has been reinstated it is business
as usual and spoke of her own, and all the staff’s, appreciation at the support that they received from the community. “We want to extend our deep gratitude for the overwhelming support that has brought us to where we are today,” they said. The funding to the refuge was cut to €20k by Louth County Council Homeless Department in February when they asserted the amount they could offer was capped by a directive issued by the Department of the
Environment. However this was not reflected in comments made by the Department of the Environment who stated that no cap was implemented and funding by Louth County Council should not have been reduced. Despite the cut being announced and later being reversed the local authorities maintain there was no confusion over the function directive. The women’s refuge is planning on drawing a line under the episode and getting back to what they do.
“On behalf of the women and children who are currently using our refuge and for those who will now continue to have refuge in the future, we thank you and invite you to join us as we move forward”, a message from Women’s Aid Dundalk read. They are hosting an open evening on Thursday, June 5 and are inviting the community to go along and hear about the work that is done there. For further information on the open day please contact 042 9333245.

THE Section of Creative Media in the Dundalk Institute of Technology returns with its end of year showcase, Fís 2014, in the recently renovated Carroll’s Building on Thursday June 5. Featuring completely new and original work ranging from film to interactive installations and games, Fís 2014 examines a wide range of ideas reflecting on the nature of art, technology and media forms. Exciting new works such as Lemuria: The Lost Land, Caecus, and Perceptune allow visitors to explore sensory awareness in new ways. SCIO: Connecting the Emigration Generation captures current patterns of migration and features a phone app that allows users abroad to contribute and interact with local visitors. Also launching will be a new arcade game, a programme that creates art from users’ bicycle peddling and an interactive website to support young victims of cyber-bullying. Visitors can also watch new films exploring celebrity culture, PTSD, superheroes and fatherhood. Two documentaries will also premiere on Wednesday night. Tonn Nua? features interviews with industry experts about the exciting ‘new wave’ in Irish cinema while Player Character explores how users engage with the immensely popular yet brutally violent video game Grand Theft Auto V. Music is central to Lush, a film blurring the line between reality and fiction which questions the benefits of teen pop star fame, while A Father’s Song examines the link between music and memory. The work on show will highlight the relevant and diverse skills that students of creative media & film acquire over the course of their studies at DKIT. The students showcasing work are graduating from four main programmes: the BA/BA (Hons) in Communications in Creative Multimedia & the BA/ BA (Hons) in Video and Film Production. Fís 2014 is open to all, and will be launched at 6 pm in the Carroll’s Building on Wednesday 4th June and will be open to the public from Noon until 9pm on Thursday.

Tain March hits the roads this weekend By Niamh Kirk Queen Medb is coming and her Celtic warriors in the vanguard as the Tain March descends on Co Louth this weekend. An Tain Bo Cuailgne, one of Ireland’s national epics, is celebrated each year over three days of entertainment and re-enactments of Medb’s march. The army consists local warriors, walkers, horse riders and families young and old. People are invited to join the army, dress up and enjoy one of the outstanding Irish heritage myths. The walk begins in Ardee Castle on Thursday June 5 where the mustering of Queen Medb’s army takes place, but, is not until the following day that the army set-out for the famous cattle raid. Over three days and nights the army travels from Ardee to Carlingford, feasting and fighting en route. Stopping at the notable locations in the epic tale, Tallanstown and Knockbridge where Chuculainn was said to have slain hundreds of the Connacht Queen’s men. There they make camp for the night and will enjoy a fireside talk by archaeologist Professor Paul Gosling. ‘Táin Bó Cúailgne & the Fords of the River Fane.’
The army arrives in Dundalk’s Market Square in Saturday where a re-enactment of a battle to the sound of Glasheen. They will depart to make camp at Bellurgan Park and Tippings wood and wake on Sunday to march over the Cooley Mountains and make their advance on Carlingford where Chuculainn will come face-to-face with Queen Maeve. While it is possible to join and leave the march at any time, in total the army will walk 63 km over the three days in celebration of the area’s part of the Ulster Cycle. Helena Mullens who has played Queen Medb encouraged families to get involved “It’s a great family fun event, free for all ages to take part. I’ve been involved for the past four years at this stage I think and I’ve met such wonderful and inspiring people during it who want to build this event to attract locals and tourists alike. It has gotten bigger and better each year with more people becoming aware of it and wanting to get involved. We’ve had interest from as far away as America, Australia, we had a large group from France last year also. It’s a work in progress to become an international festival for all to enjoy.”
Hickcocks back in Spirit Store Hickcocks Absolutely Final Ride is back. Once a staple of the late and lamented Maytime Festival in Dundalk, where it would play to packed houses each night, Hickcocks Absolutely Final Ride is making a comeback on new stage. Taking to the Spirit Store from June 5 Hickcock is irreverent entertainment at its best, where no person or party is spared. Heading a cast of well known local actors, and musically accompanied by Ann King, Doc Lavery dishes out the gags and master of shenanigans on the night. Hickock kicks-off at 9pm with the €10 ticket price to be donated to the local branch of Down’s Syndrome.

Over to you QUESTION: What advice would you give to students sitting their exams at the moment?
Gerry Kinch
Caitriona Bromley
Tommy O’Connor
Fr Guiseppe
Paul O’Connor
Well first of all I’d urge everybody to make sure they actually sit their exams. Education has never been more vital.
My advice to students would be to get enough sleep, eat well and make sure to take a break at regular intervals between studying. Just do your best.
Just make sure you go into the exam knowing that you’ve prepared well. Make sure not to have any regrets after the exam by taking shortcuts.
Everything will be ok if you have prepared properly. If you go into your exam with no work done it will not be a good experience. Do your study and it will be fine.
I have a son doing the leaving certificate and I’ve told him to read the questions carefully and do all the stuff that you are familiar with first. Get the easier questions out of the way first.
Walking in footsteps of St Brigid THE Irish version of the famous Camino de Santiago, begins at St Brigid’s Well and Shrine in Faughart near Dundalk on Saturday June 28 with pilgrims hoping to reach Kildare on Sunday July 6. The pilgrimage will wind its way through quiet rural landscapes and spiritual significance, including Knockbridge, Hill of Slane and Hill of Tara and experience the magical landscapes of Donaghdea Forest Park
and Robertstown along Grand Canal, en-route to St Brigid’s monastic site in Kildare. This unique cocurated pilgrimage offers participants an opportunity to walk for nine consecutive days through beautiful Irish countryside, visiting many sacred places. and taking part in scheduled and spontaneous ceremonies. According to Dolores Whelan, a Celtic Spiritual teacher the walk gives pilgrims
a chance to learn about the ancient traditions and wisdoms associated with St Brigid. “We are looking forward to this years Brigid’s Way and we invite pilgrims to join us and uncover layers of stories within themselves and within the land of Ireland. The walk will allow us all time and space to drop down into the deeper part of ourselves. Each day we will walk 10 to 12 miles at a leisurely pace with a support car
will travelling with the pilgrims at all times”, explained Dolores. “Obviously not everybody will be able to join us for all nine days due to work or maybe family commitments but we have a ‘Walk a Mile’ option for people who want to get a sample of what the pilgrimage entails. The first stage of this pilgrimage will begin at 2pm in the grounds at St Brigid’s Shrine with its magnificent trees and
the flowing St Brigid stream. “We will process around the grounds of St Brigid’s Shrine and at 3.30pm we leave Faughart as we begin the first stage of the pilgrim route to Kildare. We invite you to join us in this initial phase of the pilgrimage and to walk a mile or two of Brigid’s Way.” added Dolores. Karen Ward from RTE’s ‘Health Squad’ and BBC’s ‘Last Resort’ will lead the

pilgrimage alongside Dolores on the nineday trek. “The organisational and facilitation fee for each day is €25,
if we are arranging accommodation for you. “If you are joining us for a single day of the walk, we ask you to
simply make a donation on the day (suggested donation €15 per adult, €25 per couple or family)”, explained Dolores.

Details of new FIAT 500 have been released. So, what's new?
According to FIAT one of the key new features is the introduction of a new seven-inch TFT digital instrument display, developed in collaboration with Magneti Marelli, which we quote, “seamlessly combines cuttingedge technology without disrupting the trademark aesthetics of the cabin”. It is standard on the 500S and Cult model, an option for the Lounge editions. It displays key information such as the distance travelled, instant fuel consumption and range. It indicates Gear Shift recommendations; warning messages and a more sophisticated media player, telephone and navigation information readouts, including junction graphics and realtime traffic updates when equipped with a portable TomTom 2 Live satellite navigation system. On models powered by the new 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo engine when the sport button is engaged it transforms into a turbo-boost gauge. The six-speed 105hp 0.9 TwinAir Turbo engine is a new edition to the TwinAir engine family and features a Start&Stop fuel-saving system. It delivers 105hp/145Nm in Sport mode (98hp/120Nm Eco mode) and is capable of 0-62 mph in 10 seconds and a top speed of 117 mph. On the official combined cycle it is capable of 67.3 mpg and CO2
new Fiat 500
emissions are rated at 99 g/km. The entry-level engine remains the 69hp 1.2-litre petrol (113g/km) unit, which is joined by the TwinAir 85hp Turbo Petrol (92g/km) and 1.3 16v MultiJet 95hp turbo diesel (97g/ km). A Dualogic automatic transmission is available on the 1.2 69hp and TwinAir 85hp engines. Core safety equipment for the FIAT 500 includes ABS with EBD, seven airbags (including a driver’s knee bag), ISOFIX attachments and daytime running lights (DRL). It is disappointing that ESP, with ASR/MSR and Hill Holder is an option on the lower grade models. Standard equipment includes Start&Stop; seven airbags; electric windows and mirrors; remote central locking; a height-adjustable driver's seat; a heightadjustable steering wheel and electric power steering. Options include air conditioning for; ESP and rear parking sensors. The FIAT 500C Pop which starts at not only gains a powered electric convertible roof, air conditioning is also standard. The next level up adds air conditioning, special paint and white detailing (wheel covers, pool-ball design gear knob, aerial and mirror caps). The next level, Lounge, takes the POP specification and adds air conditioning (climate control on
TwinAir models), 15-inch alloy wheels, Blue&Me™ connectivity (including Bluetooth, voice recognition, steering wheel remote controls and a USB port), a leather-
trimmed steering wheel, heated door mirrors, chrome detailing and a fixed glass sunroof. You can add the seven-inch TFT instrument. With the 500S,
in lieu of the fixed glass sunroof you gain front and rear bumpers, side skirts, dark tinted glass and 15-inch sports alloy wheels. There is satin detailing
and inside there is a leather-trimmed, flat-bottom Abarth sports steering wheel; new sports upholstery with the “500S” logo embroidered into the seatback; a sports gear
knob and the seveninch TFT instrument cluster all as standard. Based on the Lounge the Cult features automatic climate control; new 16-inch alloy wheels; rear
parking sensors; a black roof panel with a fixed glass sunroof and new Poltrona Frau® leather upholstery, as well as the seven-inch TFT instrument panel, all as standard.
