IRELAND may not have qualified for the World Cup but one local girl finds herself in the enviable position of being right in the middle of the festivities having been based in Brazil for the past five years. Sharon Lennon from Jenkinstown has been living in South America as part of her job with the Department of Foreign Affairs, and is thrilled to be seeing the excitement of a World Cup at first hand. She was assigned to the Irish Embassy in Brasilia in 2009 and although the past couple of months have been spent in Buenos Aires, she is preparing for a return to Sao Paolo after being appointed Consul General.
Not surprisingly, work takes up a lot of her time, but it is impossible to escape the football-mad atmosphere in both Brazil and Argentina. “The media in both Argentina and Brazil has been taken over by the World Cup and it feels like wall-to-wall coverage before a game has even been played. “It is great to see the streets being decorated and the Panini sticker album swapping taking place on the street corners. The conversation has turned totally to football and the buzz is great”, explained the 32-year-old. A daughter of Aidan and Ann Lennon from Jenkinstown, Sharon has a sister, Leoina (who was the Louth Rose of Tralee in 2012), and brother David.
