IRELAND may not have qualified for the World Cup but one local girl finds herself in the enviable position of being right in the middle of the festivities having been based in Brazil for the past five years. Sharon Lennon from Jenkinstown has been living in South America as part of her job with the Department of Foreign Affairs, and is thrilled to be seeing the excitement of a World Cup at first hand. She was assigned to the Irish Embassy in Brasilia in 2009 and although the past couple of months have been spent in Buenos Aires, she is preparing for a return to Sao Paolo after being appointed Consul General.

Not surprisingly, work takes up a lot of her time, but it is impossible to escape the football-mad atmosphere in both Brazil and Argentina. “The media in both Argentina and Brazil has been taken over by the World Cup and it feels like wall-to-wall coverage before a game has even been played. “It is great to see the streets being decorated and the Panini sticker album swapping taking place on the street corners. The conversation has turned totally to football and the buzz is great”, explained the 32-year-old. A daughter of Aidan and Ann Lennon from Jenkinstown, Sharon has a sister, Leoina (who was the Louth Rose of Tralee in 2012), and brother David. generational Project. The Together Old and Young (TOY) project promotes experiences where young children and older people can engage with each other and develop meaningful relationships. Over a number of days eleven youngsters aged three to five visited Moorehall Lodge and spent their days in the retirement home, helping out with gardening and joining in the art and activity sessions. In particular the young

visitors got involved in the acclaimed dementiaspecific Suaimhneas and Setanta households, which have become the first accredited Butterfly centres in Ireland. “The Butterfly Approach to dementia care is all about being spontaneous and living in the moment,” said Natasha Bloore, Moorehall Lodge Care Manager. “We use visual triggers to stimulate recollections and to make emotional connections for each person. The children and

residents played together using our rummage boxes which contain a variety of cuddly toys, jewellery, wooden spoons, farm animals and other items our residents are able to identify with and which bring back memories,” she explained. The children and older residents also enjoyed a tea party and sing-along at the Cois Abhainn house with the day ending with an exercise session at Anam Chara where young and old played ball and skittles

together. “Our staff are trained to ‘live in the moment’ and that approach ensured everyone involved enjoyed a lovely, relaxed, happy and active day,” said Natasha. “They were blownaway by our wonderful experience bringing the old and the young together,” said Aishling Silke, Principal of the Old School House. bomb exploded outside Kay’s Tavern in Dundalk killing Hugh Watters and Jack Rooney and injuring more than 20 others. The investigation is being set to determine the validity of claims that northern Irish Police force colluded with loyalist paramilitaries in the attack on Dundalk on December 19, 1975. The bombing is being investigated under the ‘Glenanne series of attacks’ which include the Monaghan and Dublin Bombings. The investigation series is named after a UVF gang based in the Glenanne in Co Armagh who have been accused of carrying out about 120 attacks both north and south during the Troubles. This is the third bombing in the Republic of Ireland that has been investigated by the Northern Irish Police Ombudsman. It came about after a campaign by Justice for the Forgotten, established by the families of the victims of the Dublin and Monaghan bombings that had taken place six months earlier. Thir-

ty-four people died when four car bombs exploded within two hours of each other in the capital and Monaghan Town. On the back of the Good Friday Agreement, in 2002 an Independent Commission was established by the Irish Government into the Bombing of Kay’s Tavern, the background, facts and circumstances were to be examined. The ensuing report published in 2006 concluded that at the time there was insufficient evidence against any of the suspects for successful prosecutions and none were forthcoming. The inquiry also dealt with the possibility of collusion among loyalist paramilitaries and the RUC at the time found that there was no doubt that it had occurred on many occasions. But, as it was not possible to identify the bombers, it was in turn impossible to indentify the security forces that they worked with, and so only circumstantial evidence could indicate collusion. The four-year investigation did criticise the

level of intelligence and support by the Northern Irish police force, stating that Gardai had been prevented from gaining access to all the necessary information while making their inquiries. It found that “There is no doubt that collusion between members of the security forces and loyalist paramilitaries existed in many instances. It was not just a matter of a few bad apples, as suggested by the Northern Ireland authorities.” The exact terms of reference and the timeline of the NI Ombudsman’s Investigation have not yet been determined, however the investigation is expected to begin in later this year.

Official investigation into bombings The bombing of Kay’s Tavern, Dundalk by loyalist paramilitaries in 1975 which killed two men and more than 20 other injured is to be officially investigated by the Northern Irish Police Ombudsman. On December 19, 1975, a car

A farmer who has twice been disqualified from driving was warned that he is at risk of a custodial sentence after being stopped by Gardai despite being under a six year driving ban. John Kirk of Drumkeith, Inniskeen, pleaded guilty to charges of drink driving, having no insurance and driving while disqualified when he appeared at Dundalk District Court following an incident on June 23, 2012. The court heard that on that date the defendant was observed by Gardai driving on the wrong side of the road through Louth Village. He was pursued for a time and then arrested. Mr Kirk’s barrister told the court that his client had become a shell of a man since the death of his wife and had turned to drink to try to cope with that, adding that he was trying to address the issues. “He clearly has a difficulty with alcohol and has been attending his GP in relation to depressive illness and alcoholism. Tablets have been prescribed to help with depression and he has been advised to stop drinking. “I have explained that if you

give him a chance this will be his last and he has his alcoholism under control at present”, added the barrister. He added that going to the doctor was not easy for Mr Kirk, and pointed out that he had the support of his family. Insp Martin Beggy added that the defendant had not come to Garda attention since this incident. However, when Judge William Hamill heard that the car being driven by Mr Kirk belonged to his son and had been parked outside his house, he questioned the level of support on offer. He explained that it would be a sensible move to hide the keys of the car if they are being supportive. The court heard that Mr Kirk would be unsuitable for Community Service as he has arthritis and wouldn’t be fit for an eight-hour working day, Judge Hamill stated that he would be failing in his duty if he did not do something. “For being twice disqualified I would normally impose a custodial sentence”, he stated but in deciding to put the case back to July 23 for a Probation Report, he told the defendant that he wasn’t promising anything.

her level of enthusiasm for all. Kicking off the Festival on Friday night, the Queens were

interviewed on stage in front of an enthusiastic audience. The fun and craic flowed until Monday afternoon with the live music still playing throughout the town of Athboy, the home of the festival. Tara wowed the judges with her musical talents participating in the Festival Annual Karaoke and firing up many a sing-song throughout the weekend. On Sunday afternoon, the Queens participated in a fancy dress football match in Athboy’s Fair Green with Tara sporting a Flower Power Costume. This was followed by the Queens Modelling Competition where Tara elegantly modelled a beautiful black vintage dress. Tara was an excellent ambassador for both her club and the county throughout the weekend and clearly made a lasting impression on the judges.

Fined two weeks’ drinking money A man was fined the equivalent of ‘two week’s drinking money’ after he pleaded guilty to a public order charge at Dundalk District Court. After Christopher Fearon of 38 Clontigora Hill, Newry, Co Down, told Judge William Hamill that he currently spends €100 per week on drink, the judge stated, “I will take two week’s drinking money off you”.

The court heard that the defendant was arrested after Gardai observed Mr Fearon, who was intoxicated, weaving from the footpath onto the road on May 5 this year. Solicitor, Sean T OReilly, stated that his 25-year-old client has lost his mother tragically at Christmas 2011 and had ‘hit the drink’. He apologised for his actions.

Judge Hamill stated that the defendant had to take into consideration other road users and the consequences his actions might have. After he heard that Mr Fearon had a previous conviction for drink driving, the judge added that he would be well advised in his own interests to deal with the problem. In convicting, Judge Hamill imposed a €200 fine.

DkIT leaders in digital media Senator Jim D’Arcy, Seanad Spokesperson on Education and Skills, and Dr. Martin Maguire, Programme Director of the BA (Hons) in Digital Humanities degree in DkIT launched an exhibition of the work of final year students in the Institute recently. The students were required to develop an original website, where appropriate, exploiting existing online scholarly resources, in their core Humanities subject areas. This year’s projects included an analysis of the Regan-Thatcher relationship based on the online Thatcher archive and the Regan Library; a website that explores the development of residential segregation in Belfast City since the 1830s; a website that maps and records graveyard memorials and another that scrutinises the role of the media, especially radio,

in the Rwandan genocide. Senator D’Arcy was most impressed with the standard of the students’ work and he acknowledged the need for graduates who are skilled users and creators of information in digital media, an increasingly important area in education and publishing.

The BA (Hons) in Digital Humanities degree programme creates Honours-level Arts Graduates who are also able to integrate new digital media with traditional scholarly activity in the Humanities. Graduates study to honours degree level two core Humanities disciplines: History; English;

Archaeology; Politics & Society; whilst also becoming sophisticated creators and users in Digital Humanities. Some of the new graduates are now moving into postgraduate study in the field of Digital Humanities whilst five of them are starting into second level teacher qualification in DCU.

Man in custody in Six Counties A man who was described as currently being “in custody in the Six Counties”, pleaded guilty to a number of motoring offences in Dundalk District Court. Seamus Daly of Kilmurray, Culloville, pleaded guilty to having no insurance, no licence and

driving while disqualified after being stopped by Gardai on the Armagh Road on June 27 last year. The court heard that the defendant had been remanded in custody and was awaiting trial, but that his barrister had been in-

structed to plead guilty to the offence in order to have the matter disposed of. However, Judge William Hamill stated that he required the defendant to be present to deal with the matter and adjourned the case to November 26.

Claims of voting pact as SF miss out By Niamh Kirk

The members of the new look Louth County Council held their inaugural meeting in Friday, electing a new Chair and Vice Chair but despite Sinn Fein topping the polls and being the strongest party in the council they failed to secure either of the key positions. Fine Gael’s Oliver Tully from the Drogheda district was elected as the chairman and the Green’s Marianne Butler, from Dundalk South as the Vice chairperson. The meeting as not long underway when Sinn Fein’s

Tomas Sharkey requested a 15 minute adjournment to discuss the introduction of the D’Hondt voting system where the winner is based on the highest average. The proposal was accepted by the ten Sinn Fein councillors but rejected by the others; it was a sign of things to come. Two councillors were nominated for each of the key positions in the council, Tomas Sharkey and Oliver Tully for the chair and Edel Corrigan and Marianne Butler for the vice chair. For the position of chairperson, two avoided de-

claring their loyalties and abstained from the vote, Maeve Yore and Jim Tenanty. However Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, Labour and the non-party members, 17 in total, voted for Cllr Tully. Tomas Sharkey received ten votes, all from his SF colleagues. The situation was mirrored in the election of the Vice chairperson; Marianne Butler was nominated by Cllr Mark Dearey who pointed to her experience in the role with Dundalk, Town Council. Sinn Fein’s Edel Corriagan was also nominated, and again the vote went against the lead-

ing party with 18 votes for Cllr Butler and only SF members voting for their own. Some Sinn Fein members had no reservations about expressing their dissatisfaction with the results accusing the Fine Gael , Fianna Fail and the independent councillors of establishing a ‘voting pact’. Tomas Sharkey asking for them to reveal who they had decided would be the chair and vice for 2015,’16, and ’17. Both Tomas Sharkey and Edel Corrigan were elected with higher numbers of votes within their constitu-

encies than the councillors that were voted in, resulting in accusations that the ‘alliance’ had circumvented the will of the electorate. Some non party members took umbrage with the comments from the Sinn Fein camp and were vocal in asserting their independence from the established parties. However if the council have started as they mean to continue, despite being the leading party, Sinn Fein, still occupy an opposition position to Fine Gael, Fianna Fail, Labour and independent councillors.

The Dromiskin man has been chosen as one of the 32 men from all over Ireland who made it through the rigours of the Rose of Tralee Boot Camp for Escorts. This year’s Boot Camp activities, supported by Kerry County Council and Údarás na Gaelteachta, were staged in Dingle where the lads had to surf, cycle, carry tyres, fly kites, play tag rugby and build sand castles in order to prove they will have the stamina to be a Rose Escort. BIDS:2 is designed to have a stronger business focus with four main pillars to the programme; marketing and promotion, investment and infrastructure, town watch to enhance community safety and helping businesses access finance and funding. “I’m a Louth woman and I am no stranger to Dundalk. I went to school here, I’ve worked here, and I live here. I already have an idea of the issues facing the town as well as the many positives that Dundalk has in its favour,” she said. As part of the projects that she has already begun working on, Edel will be reaching out to businesses in Dundalk

to help them reduce their energy costs. She is also aiming to identify and tackle issues with broadband access and says she is keen to get started on the ‘betterment of the town.’ “I’m really looking

forward to hitting the ground running. Obviously we are in challenging times but it only makes me more positive that BIDS and the ratepaying community can build successful relationships and work together

effectively for the good of the town. “The ratepayers have voted their support for the independent initiative that is Dundalk BIDS, and so it is vital that I listen to them and take their feedback on board,” she said.

Edel has previously held positions in the Dundalk Economic Development Group and Louth Economic Forum as well as having worked on the plans for the regeneration, refurbishment and promotion of Dundalk Town Centre. BIDS Chairperson, Brian O’Neill said of Edel’s appointment “The BIDS Committee realises Edel’s experience and knowledge on the ongoing development of the town centre can only have an extremely positive effect on Dundalk. We look forward to seeing Dundalk BIDS go from strength to strength, under her management.” Over in Louth County Council offices the June meeting of the new Council took place immediately after the AGM to elect the Chair and Vice Chair was held. Good Samaritan found with stolen passport and phone A man who was acting as a Good Samaritan in confiscating a stolen passport and iPhone from a thief, failed to tell Gardai of his actions after being arrested on public order offences. As a result, Padraic Coleman of Killin Park House, Killin, Co Louth, appeared at Dundalk District Court where he pleaded guilty to

a charge of handling stolen goods. Insp Martin Beggy told the court that in the early hours of January 1 this year Gardai on patrol at Rampart Lane saw a man step out in front of their van. He was arrested under the Public Order Act and taken to Dundalk Garda Station, when searched he was found to

have a woman’s passport and an iPhone that didn’t belong to him. It was later established that the items were removed from the owner’s handbag in a night club. The name of this person was given to Gardai by the defendant but she had not been located. It was stated that the fol-

lowing day he went to the victim’s house and left a message to say the Gardai had her passport and phone. Solicitor Paula Tiernan stated that Mr Coleman had seen the woman, whom he knew, taking the items from the handbag and took them off her. She added that he was intoxicated on the night and

didn’t know the best course of action in terms of what to do with the items, stating that “his thought process was not what it should have been”. Ms Tiernan revealed that her client had a difficult past and currently lives with his partner and young child, but has been made redundant recently.

He also pleaded guilty to two public order charges. Judge William Hamill asked why he didn’t return them to the owner if he saw them being taken, while Insp Beggy added that he could have presented them to the Gardai when first arrested. In convicting, Judge Hamill imposed a €200 fine.

Macra na Feirme, sponsors FBD and partners, the IFA. Over to you QUESTION: Sky showed their first ever hurling match on Saturday. Should the rights have been sold by the GAA?

Archie Bates

Willie Dixon

No, I don’t agree with it. All the games should be on RTE. We should not have to pay money to watch our national game.

I think all the games should be kept free to air. A lot of people don’t have SKY and it isn’t fair to expect them to fork out money to have to watch a game. It was better when RTE and TV3 showed the games between them.

G fi

I d D Brendan Durkin Damien Bond Pearse McGeough Dp I can see the logic in what the I don’t agree with it at all. The GAA Personally I’d prefer if all the M GAA are doing but I would like to say that the money will be filtered games were on terrestrial televisee some of this money they’ve down to grass roots in the GAA sion for everybody to watch. Sharon joins in World Cup party Continued from Page 1

She attended Bellurgan NS and St Mary’s College before studying in UCD, and explains that she has also witnessed the ‘other side’ side of the World Cup build-up. “Brazil is excited and very proud to be hosting the World Cup for the first time. However, as has been well publicised, the build up has been marred by construction delays, cost overruns and protests. The ordinary Brazilian is looking forward to the World Cup and proud to

be hosting it in their country, but disappointed at the high cost to the economy at a time when there are still a lot of development needs in Brazil”, explained Sharon. However, it has been largely positive and as a football fan, there is no better place to have the event than in Brazil. “Football is a religion in Brazil, which is great for me as I grew up on the sidelines of Bellurgan FC matches. There is a real passion for sport and this provides a great topic of conversation with anyone you meet, especially the

taxi drivers. “Everything stops for football in Brazil, everything. The streets are full of flags and bunting, cars are decorated, every shop installs a television to watch the game. “Watching a game can be very dramatic, tears, lamentations, abuse hurled at the players – it can be a soap opera. Nothing but a win will suffice, which places huge pressure on the players. The shadow of the 1950 final defeat to Uruguay still looms large”, she continued. Not surprisingly, Sharon, cites the weather as

one of the best things about Brazil – a country of huge contrasts – along with the friendliness of the people, but misses getting home to see her family, watching St Patricks GFC play and socialising in Fitzpatricks. Despite the fact that Ireland will not be involved, she has not shortage of teams to support and already has tickets for one of the games. “I’m going to see the third place play off which will take place in Brasilia. I’m really looking forward to it and to being in Brazil for the finals weekend. The atmosphere is sure to be

electric. “I will watch as many games as possible on TV also, there are a lot of viewing parties organised around Buenos Aires and they could create a good atmosphere. “My biggest challenge is who to support, in the absence of Ireland. My partner Tim is Australian, so they get first shout, but they have a terribly difficult group. My loyalty will also be divided between Argentina and Brazil, and I have both jerseys ready. The rivalry between the two sides is immense”, added Sharon.

Great entertainment in finals of darts leagues

IN recent weeks the dart throwers from the Dundalk and District Darts League has competed in the Andrew McAlester Open shield which is an open competition where every team in the league plays in a knockout format. The semi finals and final of this competition is to be held in the Avenue Inn on Thursday June 12 where the Avenue Eagles take on Commercial 1896, and The Stags meet McEnteggarts. During the break in team darts each player within the league was invited to play in the Divisional Doubles competition and this was held in three different venues. The Commercial Club saw the premier players come to do battle and it was Paddy Kearney and Graham Unwin who overcame John

Donnelly and Daniel Dunn in the Final. The First Division had the Stags Head as their venue and it was a team from Courtney’s who came out the victors with Ciarain Dunne and Paidi Daly defeating Chris Lennon and Niall McQuillan of Harrys Bar. The second division competition was held in JJ O Reillys bar in Oriel Park and it was last year’s winners Barry Dillion and Bob Morgan who retained the title after fighting off Aidan Conroy and Chris McMahon from the Stags Head. The Doubles competition proved to be a great success but the title of Singles Champion is the most coveted title throughout the league. The Premier Singles final saw Ray Campbell come out on top against Daniel Dunn,

while the First Division saw Carl Thomas defeat Patrick Taaffe. The Second Division saw Aidan Conroy make up for the disappointment in the doubles final by defeating Bob Morgan. Meanwhile, the Glyde and District League held its League singles recently with Owen Caffrey defeating John Donnelly, while in the B section, Gerard McKeown got the better of Seamus Daly. The league doubles was held in Smyths in Tallanstown saw Peter Hickey and Hughie Martin come out on top against Robert Wallace and Anthony Loughran. The Cup final night is slightly different in the Glyde league in that first round losers in the knockout cup are entered into a charity cup. The char-

ity cup is played for on the finals night and all money raised on the night goes to the years designated charity. This year’s Charity was Cara Cancer care and the winners were Soraghans, while Fays of Drumconrath won the main cup competition. Meanwhile, Soraghans captured the league title by defeating Fays, while the shield saw Jackie Murphy come out on top against The Rock Inn. There was compensation for the Rock Inn as Ian Rooney won the Player of the Year award. Ian has had a great year in the league and has done well in the Dundalk league and has represented Louth at the All Ireland intercounties in Ennis. The County Louth Darts Organisation AGM on June 18 with details to follow.

Louth fans have reason to smile

Louth supporters had little to cheer about in Croke Park on Sunday as their team lost out to Kildare in the Leinster Championship, but some fans did have a reason to smile as group of young players from St Patrick’s encountered the Sam Maguire on their way into the stadium

Raft race in Blacrock THE Blackrock Raft Race has become one of the most anticipated and enjoyable family days out of the summer and this Sunday will see the 19th renewal of the popular event. First held back in 1995 the raft race has become a highlight of the summer as families flock to the seaside for

a day of fun. According to Larry Magnier, one of the event’s organisers there will be plenty of enjoyment for spectators on the beach throughout the day. “The starting time for the raft race is dictated by the tide but it will probably be around 1pm or so,” noted Larry.

Due to an amalgamation of two rafts there is room for a late entry into the race if anybody fancy’s their chances to become raft race champions. The entry fee is €150 for a team of up to four, and the raft will be provided. Contact Larry on 0872642064 for more details.

Dance Kids in An Tain An Tain Theatre is the place to be on Friday June 20 and Saturday 21 when the Dance Kids unveil their latest show ‘Anything Goes’. Never one’s to sit still, the Dance Kids have been rehearsing for ‘Anything Goes’ since January, and have promised that this years show will be a perfect night out for all the family, with performances to suit all ages. The talented dancers aged from just four years of age are promising to stage a ‘show-stopping performance’ of the hit classic, ‘Mary Poppins’, as well as many favourites from ‘The Muppets’ and ‘Calamity Jane’. The night of entertainment will also include hit songs from ‘Little Mix’, ‘Teen Beach Movie’ and Olly Murs. If that wasn’t

enough An Táin Theatre will then be transformed into the Emerald City where Glinda and Elphaba perform to the favourites from the Broadway musical ‘Wicked’. “We are so excited about this years show ‘Anything Goes’,” said Freda Hearty. “Everyone has worked so hard, these kids are so talented and they really know how to put on a show-stopping, first class performance. After the huge success of our sold out Christmas show ‘Jingle All The Way’, ‘Anything Goes’ is going to be the show of the year and is not to be missed. Book your tickets early to avoid disappointment.” ‘Anything Goes’ takes place in An Táin Theatre, Dundalk, June 20 and 21 and is not to be missed. Book your tickets today at 042 9392919.

THE NEW MERCEDES C-CLASS ESTATE

80 millimetre increase in the wheelbase (2840 millimetres), it is 96 millimetres longer (4702 millimetres) and 40 millimetres wider (1810 millimetres) than its predecessor.

The increase in space primarily benefits the rear-seat passengers who now enjoy 45 millimetres more legroom. There is also more shoulder room, elbow room

and headroom than in the previous model. Although the footprint has increased it weighs around 65 kgs lighter. There has been an increase its load carrying capacities – it

can now carry 490 litres behind the rear seats, an increase of 5 litres and 1510 litres with the seats down, which is 10 litres more than the old model. Options will include Easy Pack

power liftgate and a Hands-Free Access system. That allows the opening and closing the tailgate without touching it. All it takes is a motion of the foot in the area of the rear
