Concerns over Mount Avenue road project

The Lis Na Dara residents Association have issued a response following confirmation last week that Louth County Council had signed the contract for the Mount Avenue Link road.

The construction contract is valued in excess of €7million and will involve the construction of a new road from Lis na Dara, on the Carrick Road, to the Mount Avenue Road, known locally as the “back of the wall”.

The new road will join the existing Mount Avenue Road northwest of the eSB Substation. From that point, the Mount Avenue Road will be wid-

ened and upgraded to Castletown Cross on the Castleblaney Road.

While welcoming the news that lands will be opened up for housing developments the Lis Na Dara Residents Committee expressed concerns that the project will ‘will change the character and quality of our neighbourhood effectively splitting the estate in two’.

“We, as the community of Lis Na Dara, are pleased to hear that new lands will be opened up for housing development in the Mount Avenue area. We recognise that housing is a vital issue in our town and country, and we support Continued on Page 2

However, we are concerned about the long-term implications of this project on our community.

“Lis Na Dara is a private enclosed housing estate, which was never taken in charge, with many young families and elderly people living here. We have a strong sense of community and iden-

tity, where we care for each other and our surrounding environment. We are worried that this project will change the character and quality of our neighbourhood effectively splitting the estate in two.

“How will this project affect the wider Mount Avenue’s infrastructure and services? Will there be enough schools, shops, parks and public transport options for the increased popula-

tion? How will this project affect our traffic and road safety? Will there be adequate measures to ensure road safety for pedestrians and cyclists? How will this project affect our environment and heritage?

“Will the mature trees and planting that we have maintained, invested in and enjoyed for many years at the entrance of our estate be removed?

We are not concerned about the short-term disruption

caused by the construction work. We understand that this is a necessary part of any development project, and we trust that the contractors will do their best to minimise the inconvenience and respect our privacy.

“Louth County Council has never fully engaged with us apart from one meeting a number of years ago on road safety with no follow up, and then ultimately challenged us in an oral hearing in 2020 on the

compulsory purchase of our lands.

“The above are some of the questions that we hope will be addressed by all parties involved in this project. We urge them to consult with us, listen to our views and

take them into account when making decisions. We are not opposed to progress, but we want it to be sustainable and respectful of our needs and rights as a community,” concluded the statement.

Saint Joseph’s Redemptorist Church re-opens after renovations

Saint Joseph’s Redemptorist Church re-opened on Sunday with Fr. noel Kehoe welcoming back parishioners after the building had been closed for eight weeks for renovations. Fr. Kehoe thanked parishioners for their patience during the mass.

“We are delighted to return to the church after eight weeks. i take this opportunity to thank you for your patience during the renovation. it will be rewarded with the stunning new interior.

“Planning for this work began over three years ago from the initial concept design to completion. the initial programme involved simply replacing the lighting to LED. However, upon inspection, it was discovered that the electrical wiring and fire systems were in a very precarious state and major

maintenance became obligatory.

“Being a popular and busy church, the next challenge was to get the work completed in a very tight timeframe. ten electrical companies from Co. Louth, armagh and Down were invited to tender. Six expressed an interest, but disappointingly only two companies submitted tenders.

“We are very grateful to adair Electrical for completing an extremely complicated programme within eight weeks to a very high standard. We thank them also for accommodating all our local subcontractors and allowing building works to the sanctuary and church to happen at the same time to address damp and dry rot.

“as we return to the church for worship, i am very conscious of the skill and talent of workmen

and women who over the past 150 years created this beautiful church of St. Joseph’s.

“i am sure that you will agree that the new lighting not only will be environmentally more responsible but will enhance and highlight the beauty of the stone work, mosaics and woodwork. Like the prayer in the psalm, ‘i will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help,’ let us raise our eyes in thanksgiving for the salvation that has inspired such beauty, art and workmanship.

“We are delighted to welcome Bishop Michael Router who will bless and consecrate the newly refurbished altar on Sunday 19th March at the 11.00am mass. this is the feast of St. Joseph,” he stated.

Residents report improvement in antisocial behaviour in Halliday Mills

Co-oPERativE Housing ireland has spoken about the improvement in anti-social behaviour at a Dundalk apartment complex.

Co-operative Housing ireland Policy and Communications Manager Eoin Carroll has said there has been a “significant improvement” at Halliday Mills on Quay Street.

“What has been key to it has been the conscious effort to engage more with the residents of Halliday Mills,” said Eoin.

“We are in the process of addressing antisocial behaviour. Some residencies have been terminated.

“It was a difficult decision to make and we had to follow due process. it can be very challenging for the residents so we are aware of that.”

He added: “We have also been engaging with the community and have facilitated the establishment of a residents’ association.

“there is a strong cohort at Halliday Mills and they have come to-

gether for the residents’ association.

“the residents also have a lot of support from the housing officer. The most recent event was at Christmas when the committee organised for Santa to visit and the children got presents.”

Eoin continued: “Communal living or apartment living is still relatively new in ireland. People have to navigate and find their way.”

Halliday Mills’ resident inga Perkona said that things have definitely improved since she first

moved into her new home.

“in the beginning, it was very rocky but things have improved. i didn’t know anyone before i moved in but i’m on the residents’ committee now,” said inga.

“We decided to have six people on the committee, normally there are three people but we have back up members to cover every position in case someone can’t make a meeting.

“there has been a big improvement since some of the neighbours got replaced. there are only two apartments that are

troublemakers now.”

Inga added: “The first committee fell apart but the new committee is working well and we even have an account with the Credit Union now.

“We managed to get some money together and organised a Halloween and Christmas event for the residents and kids.

“i’m settled in here now and i rather live somewhere like this where there is high security and cameras everywhere and if you call the guards they are here in two minutes.”

Excitement building for St. Patrick’s Day Parade

DUnDaLK St Patrick’s Day grand marshals amy Broadhurst and Kate O’Connor were in fine form on Friday as they posed for press pictures ahead of the parade.

Excitement is building for the event, which starts at 1pm, and which will feature over 40 local community, sporting, voluntary and business groups.

the Dundalk St Patrick’s Day parade voluntary committee, which is made up of councillors Conor Keelan and Maeve Yore, along with Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú, Shane McBride, Dagan Fleming, Maria o’toole and anne Campbell, said they have been working hard on ensuring that the first parade in Dundalk in four years is one to remember.

the committee has announced that the family fun zone at Market Square will be free to attend and families can also look forward to free entertainment in the form of local musical and dance acts close to the Square after the parade.

O’Murchú questions definition of ‘adequately housed’

tHE question of whether adult children living at home should be deemed ‘adequately housed’ and therefore not included on social housing waiting lists was debated in Leinster House last week after Deputy Ruairí Ó Murchú raised the issue.

During questions to the Minister of State Malcolm noonan, the Sinn Féin tD asked if the Green Party tD would ‘consider local authorities’ definition of ‘adequately housed’, where grown adults are living in their parents’ home, are deemed to be adequately housed and not included on the social housing list?’

Deputy Ó Murchú said: ‘they meet the other criteria like income thresholds. in some cases they are forced into seeking private rentals, which reduces supply, and we all know the issues that exist in relation to supply, especially with the

removal of the eviction ban.

‘there are a huge number of people who find that, if they are living in their parents’ home, they will be told they are adequately housed. if someone is in a situation of technical overcrowding, he or she will be eligible to get on the housing list.

‘this is something that needs to be looked at because the problem is people are being forced into the private rental sector so they at least feel they are clocking time on the housing list.

‘Everyone is aware they will be waiting for six, seven or eight years. this needs to be looked at at departmental level and then a directive and a discussion needs to happen with local authorities, including Louth County Council, about this’. in response, Minister noonan said: ‘adult children living with their parents can apply

for and be deemed to qualify for social housing support, subject to meeting the eligibility and need criteria.

‘Once qualified, such applicants are automatically placed on the relevant local authority waiting list. they do not need to move into the private rented sector to be placed on the list, so it is important to clarify that.

‘Such decisions are matters entirely for local authorities themselves in accordance with their respective statutory allocation schemes and their dayto-day management of the social housing system.

‘the fact is adult children can be and are deemed to qualify for social housing support in the Deputy’s county, County Louth. Some 355 households or 27% of those on the housing waiting list are adult children living with parents.

‘it is the priority for

that local authority, like it is for other local authorities, to assess housing based on the absolute and most urgent need for housing’.

Deputy Ó Murchú responded: ‘i request that some clarity and a directive be given out on this basis because we have a particular problem and it is reducing supply.

‘We know the issues that exist and that they will get worse. We are already dealing with people who are in fear of evictions.

‘We have had the removal of the eviction ban and i cannot imagine how I, my office and some of our councillors will deal with this’.

Mick recalls days gone by with collection of short stories

an 82-year-old local man has written a collection of short stories based on true events called ‘the Big Fella’s Memories’.

originally from England, Mick Keane moved to Co Louth 53 years ago and currently lives near Haggardstown.

“i’m from Crystal Palace but i met my wife, nancy, at the Ballymac after being in the country for only three hours,” said Mick.

“She has passed away now

but when i met her, she was living with her Mum at St Ronan’s terrace. She was originally from Barrack Street.”

Mick worked as a carpenter and joiner for a number of years before moving on to work in the banking sector.

“i worked as the aiB porter for four and a half years and spent two and half years at Bank of ireland and also worked for a short time at Ulster Bank,” he said.

“they were great times. i got to know a lot of people in the

town. i really enjoyed the work. i also ended up teaching some carpentry skills to kids in Coxes Demesne.

“there was a project house there and the kids made wheelbarrows and garden furniture. it was a very good experience.”

Mick has since turned his hand to writing and has written over 20 short stories all based on true events.

“one of the stories is set in 1947 when my brother and i found an unexploded bomb in the garden,” he said.

Cargotec workers take strike action

MoRE than 200 workers took part in a one day strike at Dundalk forklift manufacturer Cargotec today.

Workers arrived at Cargotec on the ardee Road at 5.30am to air their grievances over a dispute about the transfer of terms and conditions for staff.

the Unite trade union represents more than 200 workers at the Co Louth facility and according to a representative from the trade union 93% of balloted members voted in favour of industrial action.

Unite has accused the company of failing to engage meaningfully at the Workplace Relations Commission and the Labour Court regarding proposals to transfer workers terms and conditions.

a statement released by Unite on Friday

spoke about the lack of progress in resolving the dispute while warning that a second day of strike action is imminent.

UnitE Branch was convened on Monday evening March 6, at the request of the UnitE Representatives and Strike Committee in Cargotec, Dundalk.

“Reps updated the Branch on the lack of progress made on resolving the dispute and

advised of the strike days planned and the possibility of escalation.

The first day of strike action took place on Friday March 10, with a further day of strike action scheduled for thursday March 16.

“the meeting was unanimous in its total solidarity with the industrial action and also agreed to fund High viz Jackets, Hats and arm Bands for the 200 strikers, along with pledging other additional

funding requested.

“Willie Quigley, Secretary of UnitE 0327 Branch which all these workers are members of, said the Branch fully understands the grave concerns the members have with the recent tUPE of a section of the membership in the Plant and the lack of proper appropriate engagement with UnitE, which undermines the CompanyUnion agreement in place since 1998,” concluded the statement.

Fitzpatrick says driver test waiting list times are much too long

DePUTy Peter Fitzpatrick has asked An Taoiseach to sort out the driving test waiting times which he claims are getting worse and causing hardship for many young people in Louth and Meath.

“As the Taoiseach knows, one of the most important things is achieving a driving licence. In three massive towns, Dundalk, Drogheda and Navan, the situation is getting worse. I got an email yesterday from a young man in Navan and he is saying the

exact same thing. He is getting on and trying to apply for a test. every time he is on, they tell him to come back in another week and another week. I passed my driving test when I was 18 and it opened up so many opportunities. There are nearly 3,000 people waiting in Drogheda, there are two other big towns in the region, and the Taoiseach is telling me this will help the situation, but it will get worse and worse,” stated Fitzpatrick.

“This has been going on

for two years. The rSA knew what was happening and that, in two years’ time, it would have to find another place. It has been looking with Louth County Council and has found a site. It is only the stroke of a pen, a very simple thing. This young fella from Meath has lost an opportunity to get a job. He has to defer going to college. He has no way of getting transport. The situation could be sorted out in a matter of days. I plead with the Taoiseach

to sort out the situation for these young people and the 3,000 people stuck in Drogheda,” he added.

An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar rejected Fitzpatrick’s claim that the matter could be sorted out in a matter of days stating that road safety was paramount in any decisions made.

“I passed my driving test at 18 as well, though it was my second attempt. A little bit like my electoral record, it took two attempts to succeed. I understand the importance

of having a full licence. It is about being able to get a job, as the Deputy said, being able to get around, get to college and do whatever people need to do. It is a major restriction on people’s freedom not to be able to have a full licence. I do not accept, though, that a change is just the stroke of a pen. I am a former Minister for road safety and have met family members of people killed by an unaccompanied driver.

“Unfortunately, it is a simple fact that people

who have not passed their driving test are more at risk of harming themselves or others. An increase in injuries, deaths and disabilities caused by driving accidents on the road would be a worse outcome than people having to wait 20 or 40 weeks for a test. It is not a nice choice to have to make, but it is the right one. We will do everything we can to get the waiting list down, and the 30% increase in testers will make a difference,” stated An Taoiseach.

EvERY tuesday afternoon, approximately 45-60 school age children stay behind school at Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan to take part in after school Gaelic Football training, and this is something that na Piarsaigh/ Blackrock CLG are proud to develop as they begin to invest their time heavily in schools in their area.

Coach aoife Lowth has joined the na Piarsaigh/Blackrock underage coaching team and has

begun developing the fundamental skills of children attending Gaelscoil Dhún Dealgan and St. Joseph’s n.S in Muirhevena Mór, and Scoil Mhuire na nGael in Bay Estate. this work has started in anticipation of the start of the football season, with underage training due to begin on the Rock Road, at 6.30pm on Monday the 13th of March, for all children from 4 - 12 years of age. na Piarsaigh/Blackrock’s

new found dual status is something that the club are striving to develop throughout the Holy Family/Blackrock area, as all children can now also avail of Hurling and Camogie alongside Gaelic Football.

Christine to launch new singers club in Dundalk

‘tHE only thing better than singing is more singing’ is a quote often attributed to the Queen of Jazz, Ella Fitzgerald, and those words most certainly resonate with local lady Christine Larkin who is launching an a cappella singing evening in the town later this month.

the Dundalk Singers Club with Christine Larkin will launch in the tipsy Cow pub in Bridge St. Dundalk on the 27th of March. the evening is open to anybody and everybody and it doesn’t matter if you have the voice of an angel or the screech of a crow. the only rule of the Dundalk Singers club is that there are no instruments. the evening will be completely a cappella with the voice the only instrument on display. Christine who is well known on the local theatre and arts circuit grew up with

music in her heart with her mam Lily Larkin a well known performer in Dundalk back in the day.

“i am from Broughton Street originally and because of my mother’s love of music i was pretty much breast fed on music and her love for singing was passed on to me very early on.

i truly believe music and singing are good for the soul and changes the chemistry in the brain to make you feel great.

i have been singing all my life but i have decided to try and launch a monthly event to encourage people of Dundalk to come out and sing a song in a friendly environment down in the tipsy Cow.

it was the perfect end to Local Enterprise Week 2023. Business owners and managers from all across the county gathered on Friday afternoon at the Monasterboice inn for the Louth Enterprise awards. Hosted by Local Enterprise Office Louth, the excitement and energy was palpable as business owners gathered to celebrate the achievements of local entrepreneurs. the event was officially opened by Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, Cllr. Conor Keelan.

Hosted by LMFM’s Gerry Kelly, the awards ceremony featured a keynote interview with co-founder of StatSports Sean o’Connor. He shared insights into building a global business, personal and professional growth and how to innovate to stay ahead of the competition.

Following Sean’s interview, MC Gerry Kelly announced and

interviewed each of the Louth Enterprise award winners for 2023.

PortaMod were named as winners of the Best Start Up award. Established back in 2021 by Donal McLoughlin and tom Condon, PortaMod manufactures and supplies high quality modular buildings from their purpose-built manufacturing facility in Collon. their buildings are used extensively in education, healthcare and commercial settings. Since it’s foundation just two years ago, the company now employs 15 staff and are planning to expand by doubling their facility size and increasing their staff numbers further in 2023.

the innovation award was presented to Donal Quinn of EnSo. Donal has developed an online platform aimed at making sustainability planning easy and accessible for SME’s. Using the EnSo platform, businesses can benchmark

their sustainability, improve and communicate it to customers who care. Launched in 2022, the company is primarily focused on supporting small food and drink businesses in ireland, with plans to expand into the UK market.

the title of Best Established Business was awarded to SeaPark Consultancy, founded by Donal Geraghty back in 2014. SeaPark Consultancy is a leading Business intelligence consultancy offering innovative and unique solutions for all Digital transformation needs.

Donal has developed a number of transformation tools which significantly reduced the time and cost involved in data migrations for users of SaP software. Based in the Regional Development Centre in Dundalk institute of technology, Donal has expanded SeaPark Consultancy to provide it’s to clients in ireland, UK, Germany and Denmark including

the HSE, Lego and atlas CopCo.

at the conclusion of the ceremony, SeaPark Consultancy was announced as the overall winner of the 2023 Louth Enterprise awards. Donal Geraghty and his team will now go forward to represent Louth in the national Enterprise Awards finals in the Mansion House, Dublin on 1st June.
