A MAJOR cleanup operation is underway in Dundalk following some of the worst flooding to hit the town in living memory. Roads were closed, trains delayed, and many people were forced to abandon their businesses and homes as they became flooded in the deluge following heavy showers last Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The Ecco Road, Mill Road and Ardee Road were all closed over the weekend as emergency services struggled to cope with the rising water. According to Assistant Chief Fire Officer Philip O’Brien the Ardee Road in particular was hit hard by flooding with many residents having to evacuate their homes.

Wayne is heading to the Olympics By Paul Byrne A Dundalk man who has been picked to be an official volunteer at next year’s Special Olympic games in Los Angeles is confident that the trip will prove to be the ‘experience of a lifetime’. Wayne Mooney from St Nicholas Avenue in Dundalk applied for the role of volunteer having helped out in St Therese’s Special Olympic club in Dundalk for a number of years. Last week he got a letter in the post to say he had been selected as a volunteer for the World Summer Games in LA which will take place between July 25 to August 2. From page 1 Wayne has to overcome before sealing what he is sure will be one of the best experiences of his life to date. “I need to raise €4750 by the end of June before I’m giving the green light to travel to Los Angeles for the Special Olympics”, explained Wayne. “I’d like to thank the Lions Club and the Dundalk Arch Club for their very kind donations so far. I have a bit to go yet to reach my full total but I’m determined to do it and I plan on organising a fundraiser after Christmas”, he added. Volunteers have been

described as the backbone of the Olympic movement and their roles include guiding the athletes through their drills on the field, making sure the events are run properly, and giving encouragement and support to the athletes. Thirty-two-year-old
Wayne is currently studying Business and Technology in DKIT and is a keen supporter of the Special Olympics movement. He is hopeful that he will one day participate in the games and is looking forward to soaking in the atmosphere and getting a feel for the event next summer in LA. “I play a lot of football and I would love one day to participate in the games maybe playing 5-a-side soccer or something like that. “I think the Special Olympics are a brilliant movement and I can still remember the excitement in the country when they were held here in 2003.

Clean-up after floods hit From page 1 “We have been very busy since Thursday really responding to weather related emergencies and our role has been to support the local authorities as they battle against the elements and try to help people who have been affected by the floods”, added the assistant fire officer. Margaret McCarthy, PRO for the Sub Aqua Club Search and Rescue Dundalk had a similar tale to tale as she spoke of a very busy weekend for the search and rescue unit. “A lot of the estates seem to be completely flooded and we spent a lot of last weekend helping out up and around the Ardee Road which was particularly badly hit”, explained Margaret. “We supported the fire services as
we helped people in Mounthamilton get out of their flooded homes and try and save some of their belongings from getting damaged”, she added. Some residents in Doylesfort Road were amongst a number of people around Dundalk who were marooned as roads flooded leaving them unable to leave their house. Catherine Conlon who has lived on the road for many years described the flooding as ‘the worst I can remember on this road in a long long time’.” Up to 25 businesses in Brookville Business Park were closed on Monday morning as up to three foot of water engulfed the park, flooding many of the warehouses in the area. Water from the Ramparts River flowed into the park over the weekend leaving cars
submerged and many businesses counting the costs of damage caused during the flooding. According to Brian Gaughran who works in the business park the water levels were actually ok on Friday evening as workers went home despite the heavy rain all day Thursday and Friday. “When we left here on Friday evening there was a bit of surface water but it wasn’t anything like it is now”, explained Brian. See Page 26
“The main focus for me now is to make sure I raise the money to let me travel to Los Angeles next summer as a volunteer. I know it will be an experience of a lifetime and I’m determined to make sure I get there”, he
added. If anybody would like to help Wayne’s fundraising efforts they can donate to the following bank account. Permanent TSB. Sort Number- 990614. Account Number23712886.

Redeemer Girls School are celebrating once again following yet another award at the annual Fís festival in Dublin. This is the fourth award the school has received and the eighth year in total the school have entered the prestigious event. FÍS is a highly successful film project for primary schools that explores film as a medium of expression in relation to the arts, and introduces children to aspects of the film-making process. It was originally set up as a pilot project in 28 schools by Institute of Art Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire but was subsequently rolled out to all schools nationwide. The project has succeeded in helping children to develop essential skills in moving-image literacy, communication and teamwork. Teachers tell us that the children develop additional skills in problemsolving, critical think-

ing, investigation and analysis. Under the guidance of teacher Michelle Condran the Redeemer girl’s put together a film called ‘Easaontas na Dathanna (which translates to ‘Disagreement of the colours’) before putting forward the film to the Fís judging panel. At an award ceremony last week the film was named ‘Outstanding Achievement in Film Making for best film in Irish’ much to the de-
light of Miss Condran and her talented Second and Third class pupils. “We are all absolutely delighted to have been awarded best Irish Film by the FíS judging panel. The girls worked really hard putting the film together and they have got their rewards finishing ahead of schools from all over the country. From voicing the characters to recording and editing the film they’ve done
it all themselves and they’ve made a really lovely film”, enthused Michelle. “We have a good history in this competition having won four awards in the eight years we’ve been taken part in it. It’s very rewarding for the children to put together a film and it’s lovely in years to come when they are all grown up to look back fondly on this film they put together themselves”, she added.

Man stole pizza as prank A man who snatched a pizza as a prank admitted that he over-stepped the mark when he punched a man he chased was warned that he risked being imprisoned if he ever did anything like it again. Conor Martin, Dungooley, Kilcurry, Dundalk, pleaded guilty to a charge of assault when he appeared at Dundalk District Court arising out of the incident on October 19, 2011. The court was told that on that date a man had been socialising with his girlfriend in a nightclub and afterwards they bought a pizza on Park St, which was
snatched by Mr Martin. When the victim chased the defendant into River Lane he was punched by Mr Martin, who was identified on CCTV. The victim suffered teeth and jaw injuries. Solicitor, Frank McDonnell, stated that his client had never been in trouble before and that the incident took place late at night when drink had been taken. “The incident started as a bit of messing on his part. He took the pizza and there was a chase, which all seemed a bit jolly until the blow was struck. At first it was a pursuit but he accepts that
he over-stepped the mark. “He bears no ill-will to the victim, whom he doesn’t know from Adam and doesn’t believe he has seen since”, stated Mr McDonnell who added that his client had €3,000 to pay to the victim as a gesture of his remorse. In finding the facts proven and dismissing the case, Judge Flann Brennan, warned Mr Martin not to repeat this behaviour. “It goes without saying that you must never do anything like this again. If it happens again your concern will not be about a conviction but imprisonment”, he stated.
Cub scouts’ busy project By Sean Bellew
Cub Scouts from Dundalk’s Buíon Setanta 5th Louth group are currently very busy after beginning their project on the adventure quest programme. The adventure quest is a module in which the cubs select a period from history
and undertake various studies about that era. The choice of lands they had were medieval times in Ireland, Celtic times in Ireland, Ancient Rome, Native Americans and Ancient Egypt. Cubs from the local section picked Ancient Rome as only a few of them knew about the time period.
Next week the Cubs will show what they have learned by dressing up as characters from that time period. Throughout the month of November they will continue to do events from that time period. This will help the section learn about the land and earn badges for that knowledge.

Locked himself in bathroom when Gardai called A man who locked himself into his bathroom when Gardai arrived at his house said he panicked because it was a frightening experience having men call early in the morning. James Fisher of 234 Cedarwood Park, Dundalk, who pleaded not guilty to a charge of assault arising
out of an altercation when the Gardai attempted to arrest him. However, Judge Flann Brennan, ruled that he was guilty of the offence and imposed a sentence of four months or 100 hours Community Service. The court heard that at 7.20am on May 2, 2012,
Gardai who were investigating a number of matters called to the defendant’s house and were allowed enter by his brother. The defendant refused to come down stairs and locked himself in the bathroom. The officers went upstairs but he refused to come out and he proceed-

Their project The Science Of Punching applied mathematics, advanced statistical analysis and cutting edge technology to the study of punching in the sports of karate and boxing. he didn’t know why the Gardai were there. He said the headbutt was accidental and that he was nervous as he had previously been the victim of a bad beating. Judge Brennan adjourned the case to February 11 for a Community Service Report.

With continued focus on the numbers of young people leaving school early and the impact this has from both a social and an economic perspective on Irish society, the provision of education through the Youthreach service is as important as ever. Louth and Meath Education and Training Board constantly reinforce the key role that Youthreach centres play in the provision of quality education to the young people in counties Louth and Meath. As part of this ongoing quality provision, Louth and Meath Education and Training Board are set to host their second annual Youthreach Conference on November 19 in the City North Hotel. The conference provides a hugely valuable opportunity for all
Youthreach staff and management teams to come together and reflect on the work they are doing, to recognise achievements and most importantly to plan and shape the future of the Youthreach provision both on a local level and within a national context. The theme for this year’s conference is ‘Professionalising Teaching and Learning in Youthreach Centres of Education’. “Youthreach centres provide education for some of the most vulnerable young people in our society and they deserve the best possible learning experience provided by the best possible staff” says Peter Kierans, LMETB CEO. Over one hundred delegates from Youthreach Centres of Education in Counties Louth and Meath are expected to attend the conference.

At a recent ceremony in Dublin, Seán Egan, Chairman of the Rehab Group Board (left), and Don Tallon, Chairman of the Adjudicating Committee for the Rehab Group Innovation Awards 2014 (outside far right), present Innovation Awards to the people involved in the winning projects and staff members, Sandy Sneddon, Drama Co-ordinator and Paudie Breen, Programme Facilitator from RehabCare Carroll Village, Cormac Woods, Manager with National Learning Network, The Ramparts and Stephen Caraher Programme Supervisor, Naomi Millen Programme Supervisor and Rosaleen Phillips Programme Facilitator all from RehabCare Quayside.
National Learning Network and RehabCare and services in Dundalk were recently awarded with Rehab Group Innovation Awards for 2014 at an award ceremony in Dublin. National Learning Network received a highly commended award for their ’Dundalk Town Accessibility Report’. RehabCare won an Innovation Award for their feature film, The Dream Machine and they also received a highly commended award for their PayPal Place and Train work programme. These projects were selected as winners and highly commended out of 64 innovative projects, which had been submitted from across the Rehab organisation.
John Morgan and Seamus O‘Grady with the help of the Employer Base Training co-ordinator, Tania Murray, started the ’Dundalk Town Accessibility Report’ as John, a wheelchair user was finding it increasingly difficult to get to and from the centre and around town due to the lack of accessibility in the town. John highlighted to the local council the pitfalls for those that are not so mobile. The PayPal Place and Train work programme was developed by the RehabCare centre in Quayside through their Workability programme, which educates those who use the services on all aspects of the world of work. The hour-long Dream Machine
feature film was developed, designed and produced in RehabCare Carroll Village in Dundalk by 50 of the people who use the services there with support from staff. They created the characters, plot, scripts and the set of the show which was premiered in the IMC Cinema in Dundalk. Deirdre Quinn, Community Services Manager, RehabCare in Dundalk said, “It’s great that our projects have been recognised out of so many innovative projects across the organisation. Everyone in the centre works really hard to ensure that these projects and others are successful and that they make a difference to peoples’ lives.”

Asked judge not to record conviction
Coffee & Shopping are the Perfect Blend
A 20-year-old woman who got involved in a late night altercation asked Judge Flann Brennan not to record a conviction against her after pleading guilty to two charges of assault causing harm and violent disorder at Dundalk District Court. Barrister, Irene Sands, stated that Romina Di Folco of Newtownbalregan, Castleblayney Road, Dundalk, regretted the incident which happened on September 15 last year on Earl St. “She accepts that she shouldn’t have intervened in the incident but that she pulled the lady’s hair. She has never been in trouble before and has expressed her remorse over what
happened”, she stated. Ms Sands added that her client had completed a childcare course and a conviction could have serious consequences in terms of gaining employment, and she requested that the judge deal with the matter leniently. “They are serious charges but her involvement was on the minimal scale. I know it is a big ask but I would ask you do deal with this under the Probation Act. She deserves a chance as she has made one mistake.” Judge Brennan stated that he wanted to give the matter consideration and he adjourned the case to February 11.

Woman carried out a nasty offence News A woman who took a charity box from a business premises was told at Dundalk District Court that she had carried out a ‘nasty offence’. Lamita Mihai with an address at 6 Riverside Apartments, Ardee, but is now said to be living in Donegal, was sentenced to three months, suspended for three months as a result of the
offence on February 7 this year. On that date she entered an office on the Coes Road and after the owner noticed the charity box was missing, he confronted the defendant. She handed over €9 in change but Gardai were called as the man believed she hadn’t returned all the money. Solicitor, Dermot Monahan,
stated that his client had her Social Welfare cut off that day and needed food and nappies for her children. She was a 21-year-old from the Roma community and a mother of two children with one on the way. Judge Flann Brennan stated that he was satisfied this was a nasty offence and imposed the suspended sentence.

Students get ready for trade fair By Sean Bellew
Transition Year students in Colaiste Rís are displaying a real enterprising spirit in preparation for the upcoming trade fair. Every year TY students across the country start up mini companies to get an understanding about what it is like for a company in the business world. It is a great learning device as the students are
taught many skills such as group work, communication, etc. The students are entered in the enterprise competition and if they win the competition they are given many opportunities and grants to help improve the business and to get to a higher business standard. A number of companies have been started in Colaiste Rís and among them is the Magic Milkshakes, which was
started up by Fergal McArdle, Shane Lennon, Seán Thompson and Rónán O’Connell. Their idea is to make milkshakes with different types of ingredients such as nutella, brownies, etc. They are one of the most successful companies for this year. This is one example of many companies preparing themselves for the annual trade fair that takes place in Coláiste Rís where the mini companies set up stands to sell
their products to all years at their schools. It usually takes place in the weeks leading up to the Christmas holidays and this is when the company starts to develop their selling skills and learn they market for the school. Students don’t only sell their product as they will also sell buns, cakes and other chocolate goods. This is one of the key events in the calendar for Ty students.

intensity and visible spectrum very close to that of sunlight. The beneficial effect of light is linked to its physiological action particularly its influence on secretion of melatonin, the “sleep hormone,” and serotonin, a neurotransmitter which regulates mood balance.
How Luminette works Luminette uses a safe light spectrum of blue enriched bright light emitted from 8 light emitting diodes (LED), proven to be the most effective wavelength in light therapy which is sent to a holographic visor which focuses the light toward the pupil, regardless of the direction of view and the position of the head, to the lower part of the retina, a particularly rich area in neuronal receptors involved in the therapeutic action of light which is directed to the retina from top to bottom much the same as natural sunlight. Luminette is a medically certified device and uses low light intensity (2000lux) so it’s completely safe causing no harm or damage to the eyes for the wearer.
Luminette is lightweight and is so easy to use, a session takes just 2025mins per day and can be done whilst still carrying out your everyday tasks including making breakfast for the kids, cooking, reading so it doesn’t take up extra time from your day. A man who admitted his driving was foolish was fined €200 at Dundalk District Court. Rory Bloomfield of 5 Letallion, Cabra, Newry, Co Down, appeared following an incident at Annaskeagh, Dundalk, on April 24 this year. The court heard that on that day a Garda patrol car was travelling behind two vehicles when one car overtook the other on a continuous white line on a bend.
The investigating Garda stopped the driver and subsequently learned that he knew the occupants of the other car from meeting on a Thursday night in Boyd’s car park. He had no explanation for his driving. The defence solicitor stated that his 19-year-old client had made an error of judgement and was foolish. He had learned his lesson. Judge Flann Brennan convicted Mr Bloomfield of careless driving and imposed a €200 fine.

Narrow Water Bridge project moving forward Fine Gael Senator for Louth, Jim D’Arcy and Louth TD Peter Fitzpatrick, this week visited Warrenpoint and Newry as members of the Oireachtas Committee on the Implementation of the Good Friday Agreement to discuss the provision of the Narrow Water Bridge. This is a project that Senator D’Arcy and Deputy Fitzpatrick have been working on for some time, and which had experienced a major setback earlier this year. Speaking after the visit Senator Jim D’Arcy said: “This trip was about moving forward with the project and meeting the relevant people to see how we can make the bridge happen. Everyone involved knows that this would be a fantastic development. The Cooley Peninsula and the Mourne Mountains are wonder-
ful amenities that should be utilised and promoted. “We met with Louth County Council, Newry and Mourne District Council, Down Local Authorities and East Border Region. We also discussed the proposals with Chambers of Commerce representatives from Warrenpoint, Kilkeel, Dundalk and Newry, and during the day we held meetings with INTERREG projects and Greenore Greencastle Community Association. “All representatives are happy with the goals of the projects and after very constructive discussions, there was a consensus that there are two main options for the bridge. “The first option is to go ahead with the bridge according to the plans that have already been drawn up and to seek funding for this project. Alternatively it has
been suggested that the Narrow Water Bridge could link in with the Southern Relief road around Newry which would connect Warrenpoint Port with the motorway. “I have had meetings with the Department of Regional Development in Northern Ireland and I have raised the options with my Government colleagues including the Minister for Transport and Tourism, Paschal Donohoe”, stated Senator D’Arcy. Senator D’Arcy and Deputy Fitzpatrick have emphasised that the Taoiseach, Enda Kenny TD has already invested a lot of time in the Narrow Water Bridge project. Both Louth representatives are committed to working together to see the provision of a bridge which would secure Louth’s position as a major tourist attraction.

Massive clean-up operation after flood at business park By Paul Byrne
Catherine Conlon surveys the damage at Doylesfort Road
Residents make appeal over flooding By Paul Byrne
Residents in Doylesfort Road have once again appealed to the council to do something about the ongoing problems regarding potholes and flooding that have been an issue for a number of years. “If anything things have gotten worse in recent years” explained Catherine Conlon. “Anytime there is a bit of rain the road cannot cope with it as there is no proper drainage in place. The road is poor and combined with the lack of drainage it means that the water floods the road anytime there’s a bit of rain”, she added. According to Catherine the road has had major issues with flooding for as long as she can remember and with many elderly people living in the area it means they are
more or less imprisoned in their home unless they have a car. “The water is about a foot and a half high along the road and it’s just not possible for elderly people to walk down the road and they are more or less stuck in their house unless they have access to a car. It’s not right and we once again are calling on the council to help us out up here”, pleaded Catherine. Cllr Conor Keelan agreed that the lack of proper drainage on the Doylesfort Road was a major problem and stated that he would again bring the matter to Louth County Council. “I fully appreciate residents concerns and acknowledge that this road has suffered significantly over the years with regards to flooding”, noted the Newry Road
councillor. “The problem is that there isn’t proper drainage in place and there is also problems with the quality of the road caused by speeding cars. I know that there are culverts installed on private land which are used for drainage in that area but they are in need of maintenance at the moment”, he added. “There is a stretch of road from Arthurs shop down to Doylesfort Grove which has been resurfaced and this has helped with flooding on that section of road and I intend to lobby the council and ask them to finish the road in the near future. I believe that doing this along with adding drainage piping and introducing road calming measures will ensure that the flooding issues will be resolved for local residents”, concluded Cllr Keelan.
A massive clean-up operation is underway in Brookville Business Park (the site of the old Macardles brewery) on the Ardee Road after up to 25 businesses were hit with some of the worst flooding ever seen in the area. The 20 acre site which houses 57 units was one of the worst affected areas around town with many warehouses suffering flood damage after the recent downpour which has brought many businesses to a standstill. According to Laura McCullen whose father Paul owns the site, many businesses have had to close their doors after the water levels rose to more than three foot over the weekend. “I’ve been talking to people who have been around here for years and they’re struggling to remember it ever being as bad as this”, commented Laura. “The power has had to be shut down as the water has risen to dangerous levels
and there are many warehouses and offices which have been affected badly from the flooding. We’ve had to fend for ourselves down here for the most part so far and James O’Hanlon transport have put in huge effort over the weekend trying to pump the water out”, added Laura. According to Brian Gaughran who works in the business park the water levels were actually OK on Friday evening as workers went home despite the heavy rain all day Thursday and Friday. “When we left here on Friday evening there was a bit of surface water but it wasn’t anything like it is now. “Water started steadily pouring out from the Ramparts River over the weekend and its left the business park under about three foot of water”, explained Brian. “This is an absolute disaster for many of the businesses down here and it’s going to cost people an awful lot of money. There are about
Patricia Gorman of Hydroscand
25 businesses affected with regards to water damage and loss of power and probably about nine which have seen their premises completely flooded”, he added. Speaking on Monday morning, Patricia Gorman, branch manager of Hydroscand spoke about the damage caused to her company whilst outlining the steps taken to get the production line running again despite the adversity her and her coworkers faced. “As you can see the warehouse here has been flooded and we have had to stop the production line with no idea as to when the water will go down and no idea when we will be able to get up
and running again. “Thankfully we enjoy a great working relationship with Moffet and they have helped us move our production line over to their premises where we hope to get up and running in the morning” declared a determined Patricia. Other businesses however weren’t so fortunate and were forced to wait for the water levels to subside before they could even think of getting going again. With more rain expected today (Wednesday) workers and business owners will be praying that the water levels around the park will have subsided before any further damage is caused.
