AMY Broadhurst was denied an historic third European boxing gold medal after she lost a hugely controversial final against Ukrainian Valery Manchak in the European Women’s Youth and Junior Championships finals in Assisi, Italy. Seventeen-year-old Amy who hails from Muirhevnamor was looking to add to her EU Championship gold and her European gold and was on course to do just that having sailed through to the final by beating the Italian and Swedish champions. In the final she faced Ukraine’s Valery Manchak where she was given a
standing count by the Hungarian referee in the fourth round despite clearly being the boxer throwing and landing punches to her opponent. That count ultimately cost Amy gold and according to her father and coach Tony Broadhurst the decision ‘stank the place out’ and was booed by the majority of the crowd watching on. “This is the second horrible decision that has gone against Amy in the past year and it’s getting a bit too much too take to be honest”, stated a disappointed Tony. “Only for Amy is such a strong character she’d be gone out of this sport long ago. It was such a blatant mistake by the referee Continued on Page 16

O’Hanlon Park Boxing Club eyeing new home By Paul Byrne
These are exciting times for all involved with O’Hanlon Park Boxing club with plans currently in place to open a brand new club in the Long Walk area of town.
• Crisis or Unplanned Pregnancy Support and Counselling • Support to Mothers and Fathers of a New Baby • Counselling and Support after an Abortion • School Awareness Programme
The club has applied for planning permission to Louth County Council to start work on the old Toymaster building in the Longwalk to change it into a boxing club. Paul Taaffe who is head coach at the boxing club is looking forward to the challenge of getting the club up and running by February/ March 2015. “We are pushing like hell to get this boxing club up and running by early 2015. We are making huge strides in achieving our aim and to be honest we’re further along than I expected to be at this stage but we are determined to get the job done and we plan on having a fundraising drive over the next few
months to help us get the place up and running”, he added. O’Hanlon Park boxing club was set up in 2005 and is currently operating in St Nicholas Hall which they rent from St Patrick’s. However the club has become a victim of its own success with a growing membership meaning the club were losing out on boxers as they were forced to turn people away due to space issues. Paul had been trying for several years to seek a new home for the club before and his efforts got a serious shot in the arm through the generosity of New York hotelier John Fitzpatrick. John, who was taking part in the RTE documentary ‘The Se-
cret Millionaire’ saw at first hand the wonderful work the volunteers in the club were doing for their local community and was happy to hand over a cheque for €180,000 to help Paul and all involved with the club relocate to a more suitable home. “John’s donation was huge for us as it gave us the chance to finally go and look for a new premises. We looked at a few options but eventually we decided to go with the old Toymaster premises at the Longwalk. It’s a lovely building and it is only a stone’s throw away from O’Hanlon Park. We have a lot of work ahead of us but we’re a determined bunch and we’ll be putting all hands to the pump
to make sure we’re up cil are due to decide on sion request by Sepand running as quickly the planning permis- tember 4. as possible. “The great thing about our club is that it’s way more than just a boxing club. We cater for children from seven right up to adults who have reached retirement. We have special needs children, adults with low self esteem, people who have problems with addictions and sometimes people just come in to talk to someone”, explained Paul. It’s more of a well being club than just simply a boxing club. We aim on opening seven days a week from 10am to 10pm and we will continue to run as a non profit organisation”, he noted. in Brief Work Stoppage
Prepare for gridlock on the M1 as local rail commuters will have to find alternative ways to work this August 25 due to the one day work stoppage by Irish Rail workers. Notice of the industrial action came after management implemented cost savings though wage reductions as proposed by the Labour Court. The strike is planned for a full 24 hours which could affect a second day of travel. The rail and national bus unions are being balloted on the action the result of which will be announced next week.
Publican fell asleep at the wheel Dundalk Leader 30th July 2014
A man who fell asleep in his car outside a pub failed in his bid to have a drink driving charge against him dismissed. Stephen O’Farrell of Corcullionglish, Culloville, told Dundalk District Court that he was sitting in his car waiting on a taxi when he fell asleep and that he had no intention of driving. However, Judge Flann Brennan ruled that he was
“satisfied beyond any doubt” of the guilt of the defendant. The conviction for failure/refusal to give a specimen was Mr O’Farrell’s third for drink driving and he was banned for six years as a result. The court heard that on May 25, 2012, Gardai saw a white van parked outside a pub in Louth village and when they approached the vehicle they found the defendant slumped
over the steering wheel. He had a lit cigarette and it took some time to wake him. After being taken to Dundalk Garda Station the defendant made three attempts to provide a breath sample but failed to do so. Barrister, David Costello, argued that his client had been charged under the wrong section as the Garda didn’t give any indication that there was
an intention to drive. Instead the officer had stated that he formed an opinion in relation to not being capable of driving. He also argued that Mr O’Farrell should have been given another opportunity to provide a sample in the station. However, Judge Brennan ruled that the Garda’s opinion had been properly formed
and that the defendant could not have been detained any longer. In pleading not guilty, Mr O’Farrell, stated in evidence that he had been sitting in the car to have some food while waiting on a taxi. The taxi driver, also gave evidence and revealed that he had been on another run when he got the call from Mr O’Farrell, but when he arrived
in Louth Village the defendant was not there. It was only the following day that he discovered Mr O’Farrell had been arrested. However, Judge Brennan, stated that he was satisfied of the defendant’s guilt. He heard that the 39-year-old publican had previous drink driving convictions and one for no insurance. He imposed a sixyear ban and a €600 fine.
Young musicians show their talents at summer camp By Caoimhe Duffy
Young musicians from the area displayed their undoubted talents at a four-day workshop
last week, which prpvided young virtuosos with the opportunity to perform songs of their own creation. The children of Jun-
ior Songschool shook off summer’s dust by participating in a multitude of music-orientated activities such as songwriting, performing and
Some of the young musicians enjoying the summer camp
producing. O Fiaich Secondary School in Dundalk welcomed the young musicians aged between eight and 12 and their palpable energy. All of the children participating in the music camp were led by trained musicians and teachers including Roisin Hayes and Sean Maguire. Musicians of all abilities were offered an insight into what it’s like
to work as a professional songwriter, musician or record producer. The children were encouraged by musician, Peter Baxter, to hum along to the melody line and try to find the words along the way, a technique which produced some interesting results and some veryinfectious tunes. Young pianist Sorcha Cassidy aided her teacher in composing a piece about her time at
the Junior Songschool. Accompanied by strings, Sorcha sang along with her campmates about all she’ll miss when the experience comes to an end. In the adjoining room, students could either try their hand at song writing or enjoy a jam session on drums, keyboard or electric guitar. The camp is usually held in the National Concert Hall in Dublin
but this year, the region’s most talented and promising musicians had the chance to avail of tips from some of the most talented people in the country. All of the students’ hard work amounted to a charming performance of their compositions last Friday at O Fiaich Secondary School where family and friends got to enjoy the budding stars’ musicianship and technique.

Louth may miss out on property tax reduction By Niamh Kirk
County Louth homeowners may lose out on a reduction in the property tax according to reports. This week it was claimed that householders in only eight counties can expect a 15% cut in the property tax according to a published report. Louth is one of the remaining counties where the same financial situation is expected as last year and with no surplus. Co Louth property tax compliance rate is at 92% not much below the national average of 94%. The business rates compliance however, which are a major source of council funding, stands considerably lower at about 60%. Rates have been reduced by 3% in Dundalk town
in order to help businesses, but while the council have said that while funding from other sources has decreased, it is not the intention to ‘bridge the gap’ through our commercial ratepayers, homeowners may not be afforded the same support. If the council cut the Local Property Tax by the full 15% they claim they will suffer a shortfall of €1.4m that will have to be made-up. Dublin’s property boom has helped the increase in house prices which in turn yields higher property taxes. But the same lift has yet to be felt in Louth. Homeowners with properties between €150k and €200k could save as much as €47 while higher valued properties of €500k or more could save as
much as €142. Eighty per cent of the tax is to be retained and spent locally with 20% going into a national fund that is distributed among struggling councils. The exact formula for fund distribution is not yet decided but it will have an impact on the degree to which Louth County Council can make cuts. Motor tax is another major funding source, however in this regard the council’s income is suffering. Last week in the Dail Committee meeting TDs heard how a Irish Road Haulage Association member in Dundalk moved 58 trucks to Liverpool, bringing about a loss of €230,000 to Louth County Council in road tax alone. Louth County Council is asking for submis-
sions from the public on the local property tax in advance of the meeting of councillors who will vote on the adjustment. They must be received by August 20 to be considered. To make a submission, email lptsection@louthcoco.ie or write to Local Property Tax, Finance Section, Louth County Council, County Hall, Millennium Centre, Alphonsus Road, Dundalk. Sinn Fein have already signalled that they will call for a full 15% reduction to relieve the pressure on homeowners and put pressure on the council to find savings. But the major question is whether Fine Gael, Fianna Fail and Independents will choose to put pressure on the council to find savings or seek local homeowners to fund it.

Carmel does her bit for charity By Caoimhe Duffy
A DUNDALK woman bravely had her head shaven last Monday evening in aid of the Cara Cancer Society. Carmel Corbett of Manydown Close, Dundalk was motivated to stand up to cancer following her sister’s unforeseen diagnosis. After receiving word that her sister would be required to have surgery and undergo months of chemotherapy, Carmel promised her family that she would do everything possible to help. Inspired by her sister’s resilient spirit, Carmel contacted the Cara Cancer Society and asked if she could offer up her head in aid of their cause. Carmel then began her fundraising efforts, receiving an overwhelming amount of support and encouragement along the way.

Let’s Bingo on the Racecourse Road hosted the event, providing great entertainment for all involved. On the night, Carmel managed to raise a staggering €1,380 for the Cara Cancer Society, a voluntary organisation primarily dedicated to helping people affected by cancer. Some couldn’t bear
the thought of parting with their locks, but Carmel insists that her simple deed hasn’t caused her an ounce of worry. Although she jokingly admits that her head feels as prickly as a hedgehog, she’s honoured that she could have the opportunity to help those living with the disease.

Turns into a different person with drink
A man who claimed that he is a ‘different person’ when he is drinking apologised to Gardai for verbally abusing them after a night out. As a result of his actions, Paul Smyth, was warned to address his problems or face a return to court. Dundalk District Court
heard that on July 15 this year, Gardai were called to Lios Meade following reports of an individual banging and kicking doors. When the arrived, Mr Smyth was on the road and he proceeded to run at the patrol car. He became abusive, telling the Gardai fo “f*** off
scum”, while he initially refused to give his name and address, while he also lunged at the officers before being arrested. He continued to be abusive to Gardai at the station. Solicitor Sean T O’Reilly stated that he knew Mr Smyth’s family personally
and that the defendant is a nuisance when he is drunk. He has a drink problem and is a nuisance to himself and everyone else. Mr O”Reilly stated that his client had a verbal altercation with a friend earlier, but that he hadn’t been drinking since and that the
30-year-old is hoping to take further action to address his issues. Judge William Hamill warned the defendant that the consequences for continuing such behaviour could be very serious both for himself and others. “I am sure his father

Eddie McArdle made what is now a regular trip to watch star forward, Pat Horgan, help Cork to overcome Limerick in the final at what was the last game before redevelopment of the famous Pairc Ui Caoimh. She would be particularly proud to see Pat playing for the team now. “Myself and my wife, Majella, travelled downf or the final and it really was a brilliant atmosphere in a brilliant stadium. Hopefully they will go on to win the All-Ireland”, explained Eddie who is a first cousin of Pat Horgan’s father, Patrick snr. “It was great for Pat to get his first senior medal with Cork as he really is a very down-to-earth young man who doesn’t get carried away with his success, but lets his hurling do the talking”, Eddie added.

Training regularly is a good way to stay fit. Join a sports team or a boxing club and as well as that cut down on the amount of food you eat. Moderation is key.
Me and my friends cycle every day and we think it’s a great way to stay fit. Especially in the summertime when you can cycle all day long if you want to.
I think people are spending too long in front of the internet these days. Get outside more and get some fresh air and spend less time at the computer.
I like to eat healthy and cut out all the takeaway crap like pizzas and chips. It’s hard to stay fit when you eat greasy food.
I like to play football and swim and box so all those things help me stay fit. Boxing is hard so it’s important to be fit and be able to last for the whole fight.
Heroic Dundalk just fall short in Europa League By Paul Byrne
Dundalk FC’s European campaign ended heroically last Thursday evening as the Lilywhites fell just short of knocking out Croatian powerhouses Hajduk Split. After losing the first leg 2-0 in Oriel Park it seemed it would be a case of damage limitation for the away leg but the players, manager and coaching staff had other ideas and ultimately they were just a single goal shy of progressing to the third round. When Jean Evrad Kouassi gave the hosts the lead after 25 minutes it looked as though the floodgates would open for the Croatian side. However this Dundalk
side have shown time and time again that they are ready for the battle and they roared rightback into the tie thanks to second half goals from Patrick Hoban and Kurtis Byrne. Amazingly, with ten minutes to go it was the Croats who were camped in their own half hoofing the ball away as Dundalk pushed for the third goal which would have sent them through. Unfortunately for Dundalk supporters, that goal never came and it was the Croatian side who squeezed through 3-2 on aggregate. Dundalk’s efforts were not only appreciated by their own fans but also by the 20,000 home supporters who applauded
Stephen Kenny and his players before rising in unison to give a standing ovation. Dundalk’s four games in Europe haven’t gone unrewarded with €250,000 worth of prize money due to be received by the club in December. The focus now returns to the Premier Division with Dundalk sitting pretty at the summit three points clear of title rivals Cork City following the Lilywhites emphatic 5-1 victory over Bray on Sunday evening. This Friday sees Dundalk travel to Cork in a game which could prove pivotal to both sides title hopes. Kick off is at 8pm and will be screened live by Setanta.

Use of handcuffs sees drink drive charge dismissed
Dundalk Leader 30th July 2014
10
A man who was driving while over the legal limit escaped a conviction after a judge ruled that the arresting Garda was not entitled to apply handcuffs during the arrest. Ciaran Crosson of 3 Mournview, Dublin Road, Dundalk, had the charges against him dismissed after Judge Flann Brennan ruled that the arrest was unlawful. The investigating Garda, who was on his own at the time of the incident, stated in evidence that he handcuffed the prisoner for his own safety and the Garda’s safety. Barrister, Martin Dully, argued that there was no evidence given that the defendant would resist arrest or
flee the scene. He stated that the handcuffing parameters had been set out and on this occasion the action had not been objectively justified. In making his ruling, Judge Brennan, stated that there had to be a question if the arrest was lawful and if the handcuffing was lawful. “The sergeant gave his evidence honestly and explained his reasons. Unfortunately on the basis of the Supreme Court judgement he was not entitled to handfuff and the prosecution must fail”, stated the judge. The court heard that on January 7, 2013, at 2.40am the investigating Garda was behind a car on the Dublin Road which swerved left into the Mournview estate before stopping suddenly.
When the Garda spoke to the driver, 52-year-old Ciaran Crosson, he noticed a strong smell of alcohol, while his eyes were glassy and he was unsteady on his feet. He was arrested and taken to Dundalk Garda Station where he provided a blood sample. The barrister argued that a form given to Mr Crosson indicated that the Garda had complied with procedures which had been repealed almost two years previously. He also stated that the defendant’s date of birth had been put on the sample, rather than the date of the offence. Insp Martin Beggy argued that the defendant had not been prejudiced by these actions.

Toys needed in appeal for aid for Gaza Louth Sinn Féin has established a number of drop off points for those who wish to donate items to aid the children of Gaza. Spokesperson for the party, JJ Quigley called on people to search their homes and hearts and give generously to the Gaza Toy Drive. “Our local councillors and I have been approached by lots of people who are outraged and feel helpless at what is happening in Gaza especially to the children. We all have items in our homes that we don’t use and instead of disposing of them why not give them to the children in Gaza”, he stated. “There is a ship going

Football club to Hit the Hills once again
After the great success of the last two years, a local football club are bringing back ‘Hit the Hills’ for 2014. St Josephs GFC, who are organising the event in conjunction with Dromiskin Fit Club, are asking people to come for a walk in the
Cooley Mountains on Saturday August 9. The trek includes a fully guided Hill Walk through one of the finest areas of the Land of Legends, taking in a brand new beautiful trail only opened earlier this year. You will be treated to panoramic views of the whole
county and down as far as Dublin & Wicklow and even our own native parish. The day involves an easy walk and a hard walk with both starting and finishing at the Lumpers Bar in Ravensdale. The easy walk is over 7km and will start at Noon,
Renewed calls for ambulance review
Louth TD Seamus Kirk has added his voice to calls for an urgent review of the National Ambulance Service (NAS) operations in the North-East. The request was made to the new Minister for Health Leo Varadkar after it emerged that two ambulances broke down last weekend in Dundalk. “This is totally unacceptable. Patients’ lives are being put at risk because the national ambulance fleet operating in the North-East is not fit
for purpose. “This is not the first incident of this type in the region and unfortunately many people believe it won’t be the last”, said Deputy Kirk. “I am calling on Minister Varadkar as the new Minister for Health to order a fundamental review of the operations of the National Ambulance Service in the NorthEast. “It’s not good enough that patients are literally depending on the element
of chance to get to hospital on time. “This incident happened late on Saturday evening. It is precisely because there are limited services available at this time of the day and week that the reliability of the service must be unquestionable. “People in Louth need to know that in emergency, any emergency, they are able to receive safe and efficient ambulance care, added the Fianna Fail TD.
while the more challenging trek is over 14km and starts at 11am. Both walks are suitable for all ages but would require a moderate level of fitness. Registration is half an hour before each walk, at the Lumpers Bar at a cost of €15 per adult, €10 for U18s
and OAPs, €30 for Family. Charge includes full barbecue after walk. Both walks should end at roughly the same time and along with the barbecue there will be children’s entertainment and the All-Ireland quarter-finals on television. Participants are asked to
wear suitable footwear, preferably hiking boots or trail shoes, particularly if doing the hard walk. Dogs are not permitted. For any queries in relation to the walk, please contact Michael Kinahan on 0871257720 or pro.stjosephs. louth@gaa.ie

Dundalk’s cyclists at the Tour of Meath On Sunday last over 40 members of Dundalk’s Cuchulainn Cycling Club descended on Trim to participate in the 160km An Post Tour of Meath. While the tour started in beautiful sunshine along the way they did meet with some showers and wind from time to time, which made for tired legs. The food stop at the 100km mark was a welcome break, given everyone a chance to refuel with some pasta and sandwiches before tackling the final stretch for home. With just three rounds remaining in the FPM Accountants Summer Cycling League the top of the table is quite tight. Trevor Kane, who suffered what may turn out to be a very costly puncture in the most recent round, leads the league

Amy denied a Euro gold medal
From page 1 that you have to question what she was up to. There is a video posted up on my facebook page which clearly shows Amy throwing two great punches before the referee calmly breaks the boxers up and unbelievably gives Amy a standing count. The whole place just went silent and even the judges watching on looked shocked”, ,he added. “Decisions like this are tough because the boxers put so much time and effort into the sport for little reward and it’s not right that a fight can be decided by such an obvious mistake.
Naturally Amy is disappointed but she’s a strong character and she’ll bounce back. She got a cheer from everybody in the hall during the medal ceremony which was a lovely moment for us all. She boxed excellently the whole way through and she did herself proud”, noted Tony. Poc Fada event this weekend hurley (they may lift and strike or hit the ball from the hand). They play to the top of Carn an Mhadaidh and after a short break continue back down to finish in Aghameen. The whole course measures over 5km. An Corn Cuailgne (“The Cooley Cup”) is awarded to the player who takes the lowest number of pucks. Ties are broken by the distance by which the player’s last puck crosses the finish line. The concept of the competition originates in the Irish legend of
“Táin Bó Cuailgne” when Cúchulainn, who as the boy Setanta set out from his home to the King’s court at Emain Macha hitting his sliotar before him and running ahead to catch it. This year competition will see twelve men, seven ladies and four U16’s battle it out in their particular sections. This event will begin at 11:30pm on Saturday August 2 on the Annaverna mountains. Anybody who plans to attend are advised to dress suitably for the mountain as weather conditions can vary.
Damien Dempsy for Spirit Store One of Ireland’s favourite singer songwriters Damien Dempsy has announced a show in the Spirit Store for this November. His distinctive Dublin drawl, down to earth attitude and locally inspired lyrics has made his live shows among the most popular in Ireland. The 37 year old writes and sings about everyday life, from the hum-drum of Dublin’s north side and the challenges of being an Irishman. His empathy with the down trodden and disadvantaged have given a platform to discuss the darker part of our society and our own natures. His last studio album ‘Almighty Love’ came out two years ago but most recently he recently released the aptly titled, ‘It’s All Good’, a best of album which was not available in Ireland. This 15-year long career in the Irish music industry has given Damien Dempsy an effortless ability to entertain and inspire regardless if he is on a festival stage or an intimate show. Tickets for the show have just gone and sale and should be secured early to avoid disappointment.

Real life issues are explored at theatre On Saturday July 19 a performance took place at the Spirt Store of a devised play entitled, HOME. This play looked at true stories of lives affected by racism. The play came about from a project started by drama facilitator and artistic director of MAD Youth Theatre Kwasie Boyce, to
engage the black community in the arts, specifically theatre. The participants Francis Onwuka, Antony Monti Iweka, Temi and Ester Pedro, Chi Chi Enyoazu and Catriona Cooney took part in the process of basic actors training workshops and theatre skills building. As part of the project

the participants explored the issue of racism through drama the types that exist and how to overcome the effects through positive actions. They were led through this exploration through exercises such as theatre of the oppressed and forum theatre they were introduced to newspaper reports of incidents that occurred across the country . Through these methods they were able to develop characters and re-write or in some cases give a new perspective to the stories. The participants were engaged
and committed to their involvement to their character, they wanted to do the best job possible to show the emotional impact that racism has on everyone. This was reflected in their performance to a packed audience at the Sprit Store, and the show was opened and closed by a local singer Cynthia Salako who sang beautiful soulful blues and soul which tied in perfectly with the nights events . Some audience members were moved to tears in some of the monologues. This show got people talking at the end about the stories and about change.

Thrilling cricket encounter ends with honours even AN intense final over of the first Dundalk Youths T20 saw the game finish out as a tie after a marvellous effort from both teams in an enthralling game that swung back and forth throughout, last Friday evening in Dromiskin. Led ably by captains Rosie Cousins and Jessica Doherty, who commandeered teams ‘A’ and ‘B’ respectfully, the game went down to the wire, with the entirety of the huge crowd sweating over each and every ball as the game narrowed to a close. Cousins won it and elected to field first, on a shortened and quick outline on the Green Road-based pitch. Opening the bowling for Team A was vice captain Ryan Kirk who limited Team B’s opening batting partnership of Doherty and Hazel Williams throughout
the first few overs. The pair eventually got the run rate up before retiring not out to allow their colleagues a chance to bat. The breakthrough came for team A soon after as father and son pairing of Brian and Leo Mullen came onto the bowling attack and took wickets in quick succession, bowling out Paul and Keely O’Connor. Again, team B dug in with the sibling-partnership of Euan and Shona Finnegan, who batted excellently before also taking the sporting option to retire. For the last few overs in the game, Josh Challoner and vice-captain Michael Mullen totted up the runs for Team B, as they finished with 61 for the loss of 3 wickets. Opening batsmen for Team A Gerry Mc
Michael Mullen sends one back over the bowler’s head
Keever and Leo Mullen went out all guns blazing from the start, and after they were out, Elle Mae Tremewan followed after a direct hit from Louise Challoner. the former striking some magnificent boundaries before being bowled by Williams in the third over. Leo Mullen suffered the same fate the next over, his wicket taken
by Doherty. Their cause was further helped on by Michael Mullen’s dismissal of opposing captain Cousins just a few overs later. Just as Team B did before, Team A battled hard over the next few overs with Catherine Raftus and Fiona Lennon proving their allround abilities by taking some quick singles and defending their wickets
well. Just when Team A looked set to cement a lead, things began to fall apart for them. Chong couldn’t translate his recent run of form into runs. Order was restored as Kirk came to the crease, a calming influence but after he was caught, Eddie Bosano-Andrews was unfortunate to nudge a ball behind,
into the grateful gloves of wicketkeeper John Finnegan. The scene was set for a grandstand finish, with Catherine Marcus and Brian Mullen batting superbly in a final wicket stand. Keeping to the run rate, the pair needed 4 runs off the last over to clinch victory at the death but they struck three to see the game end in a tie.

skoda octavia scout NEW nissan pulsar
Details of the new fourwheel-drive Skoda Octavia Scout have been a released. Based on the new Octavia, the second generation Scout features four-wheel-drive utilising a fifth-generation Haldex clutch transmission. It is protected against light off-road damage with plastic cladding package and increased 33mm ride height over the standard Octavia. It promises a 20 per cent reduction in fuel consumption and lower C02 emissions over the previous Scout. There are two engines in the
line-up: a 2.0 TDI 150PS with a six-speed manual gearbox and a 2.0 TDI 184PS featuring a six-speed DSG as standard. The former returns 55.4 mpg on the combined cycle and
has CO2 emissions of 129g/ km, while the range-topping model returns 55.4 mpg and has CO2 emissions of 134 g/km - according to official NEDC figures.
NEW mazda 2
Mazda are gunning for the Ford Fiesta and the Opel Corsa with the unveiling of their new Mazda2. It will go on sale in Japan in the autumn of 2015, with a European launch date yet to be announced. It will be built at Mazda’s Hofu plant southeast of Hiroshima, Japan. At this stage technical details and prices for Europe are a fair way off but what we do know is that it will feature either a diesel SKYACTIV-D 1.5 or petrol SKYACTIV-G 1.5 engine amongst its power trains, with a choice of man-
ual or automatic transmissions. The interior will move into another league with the introduction of tablet-style technology on the dashboard
and the minimal of switchgear. And it will be offer with the latest i-ACTIVSENSE active safety equipment and the MZD Connect in-car connectivity system.
Nissan are re-entering the family hatchback market some eight years since the demise of the Almera. Designed for Europe the new Pulsar is to be built at Nissan's Barcelona plant and will go on sale in Europe during autumn 2014. It will sit below the new Qashqai and X-Trail, yet share the new technology that both of the SUVs enjoy, such as the option of LED headlamps and
Nissan’s NissanConnect system with smartphone integration. The Pulsar will feature Nissan’s Safety Shield technology with the option of Forward Emergency Braking, Moving Object Detection, and Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Warning systems. All of the Pulsar’s engines will be turbo-charged with the option of a 1.2-litre pet-
rol DIG-T unit outputting 115PS. There will be the familiar 1.5-litre dCi diesel engine that generates 110PS/260Nm of torque. And in 2015 there will be a more powerful 190PS 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine joining the range. There will be a unit under 95 g/km in the line-up and Nissan’s XTronic automatic transmission will be available on the Pulsar.
