2020
WELCOME …to the second half of our anniversary season. We’re celebrating 80 years of Dundee Rep Theatre and 20 years of our resident acting ensemble – the only one of its kind in the country. It’s been wonderful presenting local stories that have enjoyed such wide appeal, and we continue to do this into 2020, beginning with our new musical stage adaptation of Oor Wullie which tours across Scotland this spring. We’re thrilled to be partnering once again with the National Theatre of Scotland to tour The Cheviot, The Stag and the Black, Black Oil in 2020. John McGrath’s extraordinary ceilidh-play tours to Glasgow, St Andrews, Musselburgh, Galashiels, and right here on the Rep stage. We are thrilled to welcome acclaimed British Choreographer Gary Clarke with Wasteland, an outstanding dance-theatre piece about postindustrial decline and the rise of rave culture. We’re also presenting an innovating shot for shot stage recreation of the cult movie Night of the Living Dead, and Vanishing Point’s staging of Franz Kafka’s The Metamorphosis. As always, our Children’s festival has something for all ages and we hope you enjoy this season’s diverse selection of visiting productions.

SMILE Football visionary, tactical genius, greetin’-faced moan – who was the real Jim McLean?
WRITER PHILIP DIFFER DIRECTOR SALLY REID DESIGNER KENNY MILLER LIGHTING DESIGNER LIZZIE POWELL SOUND DESIGNER FIONA JOHNSTON DRAMATURG FINN DEN HERTOG
Jim McLean might never be called one of Scottish football’s best loved characters, but he will always be described as one of the most respected. While boss of Dundee United, McLean did something that no-one thought possible, and turned a provincial football club into a genuine European force, though not without cost. Smile, a new piece based on the life of this legendary football icon, reveals for the first time the complexities and contradictions, the highs and lows, and the triumphs and regrets of this totally unique individual.

Two rulers: one benign, the other obstinate.
DIRECTOR IRENE MACDOUGALL DESIGNER KAREN TENNENT LIGHTING DESIGNER EMMA JONES
Shakespeare’s Vienna is a place of extremes. Depravity and licentiousness co-exist with inflexible virtue. A young nun is forced to choose between her brother’s life and her chastity. Under the force of patriarchy, her choices are limited and she doesn’t know where to turn.
COMPOSER CLAIRE McKENZIE
Directed by Dundee Rep Ensemble’s Irene Macdougall, this is a play which is all at once dark, comedic and entertaining. Measure for Measure is an exploration of the hypocrisy of power, the dispensation of justice, and the power of mercy. TICKETS SEAT BAND A B C

Set in a local community centre in small-town Vermont, five unlikely strangers gather for an amateur acting class. Winner of the 2010 Obie Award for Best New American Play and voted one of the top ten plays of 2009 by the New York Times, Annie Baker’s Circle Mirror Transformation shows eccentric leader, Marty, taking the group on a creative journey through drama exercises and role-play where these seemingly trivial games fuse personalities and truths, connecting them on a much deeper level. Hilarious, heartbreaking and altogether ridiculous. Dundee Rep Ensemble’s 2020 community tour takes audiences on a tender, funny and transcendent journey from the every day into the profound.

What do you do when the state becomes the oppressor? Would you put your body on the line? A young girl ready to die to defend what she thinks is right. A king determined to impose his will as the rule of law. Antigone, Interrupted re-imagines a classic story for a contemporary world through the body and the voice of a single performer. In his first creation as Artistic Director of Scottish Dance Theatre, choreographer Joan Clevillé (Plan B for Utopia, The North) presents an intimate solo work with acclaimed performer Solène Weinachter. Using his distinctive mixture of dance, theatre and storytelling, Clevillé examines the notion of dissent in democracy, and how the female body can be the target of oppression but also a powerful tool for resistance.

POST SHOW TALK FRI 31 JAN
In 1994 hundreds of coal miners hung up their pit boots as Grimethorpe Colliery was destroyed, along with the tight-knit working-class community that surrounded it. WASTELAND, Gary Clarke’s sequel to COAL, looks at how two generations coped in this era of radical upheaval. As we see one generation grind to a halt, we follow the next into the 90s illegal rave scene, where derelict warehouses and abandoned work spaces became home for a new-found community of music and dance. Bringing together Clarke’s vivid physical dance language performed by a company of exceptional dancers, a community cast of singers, brass musicians, archive film footage, a powerful rave soundtrack and unique art work by Jimmy Cauty (co-founder of The KLF), WASTELAND dives head first into a gritty story of loss, hope, escapism and survival.

Heartbroken author Emily Winters takes herself away to her aunt’s old cottage in Ayrshire to get over her cheating ex. As she celebrates Burns night alone, wishing that the right man would show up, she gets a visitation slightly different than what she’d hoped for – the ghost of Rabbie Burns (John Kielty) appears to give her some dating advice… and he knows what he’s talking about! Featuring the great songs and poems of Burns, such as My Love is Like a Red Red Rose, Ae Fond Kiss, Charlie is my Darlin’ and of course Auld Lang Syne, this hilarious comedy proves that love and relationships haven’t changed that much in 200 years after all.

AFTER SHOW Q&A
A push. Somewhere high. Someone falling. Remember? a devised physical theatre piece, is the development of a scratch performance shown at The Rep Stripped Festival at Dundee Rep in April 2019 by Nunah Physical Theatre Company. Remember? follows the story of one woman who is desperately trying to put the pieces of her memories, and essentially her life, back together. Why does she feel she has done something wrong? What can’t she remember? Her partial and fragmented memories are painstakingly revealed throughout the piece, and the shadows of her past invite her, along with each audience member, to consider what might have happened in a world where it’s often impossible to know the real truth.

Bovill returns to the Dundee Rep with her 5 star show, PARIS, winner of Spirit of the Fringe in 2017. Here she beckons you back to a Parisian scented twilight world; a demi-monde of heroes, outcasts, cynics and bruised romantics. With drama, pathos and pizzazz, the show casts a sepiatinged spotlight on the Golden Age of French Song.
Celebrating some of the greatest hits of the 20th century in both English and French... the show includes My Way, What Now My Love, Autumn Leaves, La Vie En Rose, Let It Be Me, No Regrets, She, Amsterdam... ‘Something that will stay with you for the rest of your life... I wasn’t prepared for the effect her voice would have on me’ SUNDAY TIMES

Horse makes an exciting return to the Rep with her very special 30th year anniversary celebrations of the first Horse album The Same Sky. This is a rare chance to share and relive memories from the evocative and formative first Horse album. In March 1989, the first single “You Could Be Forgiven” was released, it was so different from anything else – thrilling first plays on Radio 1, this track absolutely set the bar. The first major UK tour followed. In 1990 the album followed and tours across Europe opening for artists such as Tina Turner and BB King. The standout song from this album and arguably, of any of her albums, is Careful, a beautiful and timeless song, which will forever be her ‘my way’. A special night which will inevitably conjure up treasured times from over the years for her entire audience. It’s the full band show, playing the album in its entirety with b sides and a best of the rest – a set choc-full of classic songs. A very special evening indeed.

Mark uses his trademark style of storytelling, stand-up, subversion and really, really, well researched material to try and find out how the hell we ended up in the middle of this shit show. 50 Things About Us is a show about songs, gongs, loot, tradition, wigs, nicking, statues, art and identity. A sort of funny national edition of Who Do You Think You Are? Mark says: “Look, I have been doing this for 34 years. I have gone from stand-up to theatre and half way back again. It’s another slightly odd show, a sort of sweary, History Channel with laughs and creative mischief. If you’ve seen my shows before, this one is going to be a show in the vein of 100 Acts of Minor Dissent.” ‘A master of this type of entertainment…’ HHHHH THE ARTS DESK

Macpherson’s 50 years-plus career in broadcasting and writing shows few signs of abating. A former teacher who rose to prominence at BBC Scotland in the late 1960s, becoming one of Britain’s most recognisable football presenters and commentators. Macpherson has worked for the BBC – with whom he had a noted fall-out – Eurosport, STV, Radio Clyde and Radio Scotland among others. He is an expert on Jock Stein, whose work he covered as a journalist and whom he got to know behind the scenes with Celtic and Scotland. Macpherson’s knowledge of Scottish football is scarcely matched. With sports journalist and broadcaster Graham Spiers.

Large in size, and keen in nature, Zog is so eager to win a golden star at Madam Dragon’s school, where dragons learn all the things that dragons need to know. Zog tries so very hard, perhaps too hard, and he bumps, burns and roars his way through years one, two and three. Luckily, the plucky Princess Pearl patches him up ready to face his biggest challenge yet… a duel with knight, Sir Gadabout the Great! The smash-hit stage adaptation from Freckle Productions (the team behind Tiddler and Other Terrific Tales and Tabby McTat) is back in 2020 and promises to be bigger, brighter and more roar-some than ever before! With brand new songs from Joe Stilgoe (The Jungle Book, The Midnight Gang) and directed by Emma Kilbey, Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler’s much-loved Zog is a magical production for all ages.

The Metamorphosis is the story of an ordinary man who wakes up one morning to find he has been transformed into a giant insect. Soon he begins to realise he’s got bigger problems than being late for work. His family, shocked by his bizarre condition, barricade him into his room, unwilling to accept that somewhere inside this behemoth of a bug is their son. Franz Kafka’s hugely influential, tragicomic, iconic novella is brought vividly to life by the team that brought you The Dark Carnival, in this international co-production between Vanishing Point, Emilia Romagna Teatro (Italy) and Tron Theatre (Glasgow).

‘You said small spaces encourage large thoughts and... then you locked the door.’ When Annis, a young girl with autism, finds herself incarcerated in Lennox Castle Hospital, an institution, designed for the constraint of ‘the feeble minded’, her first impulse is to try and escape the brutal regime of punishment and medication. However, as she gets to know her fellow patients they introduce her to another world – a world exploding with colour and song. Linda McLean has written a play with songs (by MJ McCarthy) about the strength, wit and resilience of those who were sent to Castle Lennox from the 1930s to the 1990s. This inspiring tale is brought to the stage as a collaboration between the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh and the brilliant Lung Ha Theatre Company (Dr Stirlingshire’s Discovery, We Are All Just Little Creatures).

Stand Easy returns to the Rep with their new devised play Respect. Stand Easy works with wounded, injured or sick ex-Forces and their families. We spend three weeks working together with professionals and HND drama student volunteers from the D&A College, to devise a play based around their experiences. The play this year will take a story form each of the ex-Forces participants and weave it into a play about respect. Why is respect important, how do we show it, what happens when respect is not shown, why are some groups of people shown less respect than others? We do this to improve the mental health of those involved, to bring them out of isolation and to reconnect them with civilian life. Please come along and support these courageous people who are still serving their country – now, in a different way.
