19/20
WELCOME It is wonderful to be writing our first season brochure foreword together now that Liam Sinclair has joined the Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre team as Executive Director / Joint Chief Executive. This year the Rep marks its 80th anniversary and celebrates 20 years of our resident acting Ensemble. We’re celebrating with stories that have a particular resonance to Dundee, and can also reach beyond to the wider world. Peter Arnott’s Tay Bridge is a brand new play that tells the stories of those caught in the famous bridge disaster of 1879. A-Z of Dundee, directed by Ewan Donald, comes home to the Rep stage after a successful tour to local community centres earlier this year. Oor Wullie will have his own show at the Rep before touring the country in 2020, while Emily Mouse returns as a seasonal treat for our younger audiences. We’ll tell the story of Dundee’s own Jim McLean in Smile, a new play about his life directed by Sally Reid. Irene Macdougall then directs a new production of one of Shakespeare’s most controversial plays, Measure for Measure. This year we also welcome new Artistic Director, Joan Clevillé, to Scottish Dance Theatre. Having previously danced with the company, Joan has built a reputation in the Scottish dance community and developed international demand for his work. We’re thrilled that he has joined us at this exciting time. Scottish Dance Theatre is proud to stand as a creative ambassador for Dundee as we embark on a four-week tour in South America, followed by the Edinburgh Festival Fringe where we’ll perform RITUALIA and Looping: Scotland Overdub. In Dundee, audiences will have another chance to see The Circle and Process Day. We’re also proud to present The Great Big Dance Show, our family-friendly celebration of dance, and Sputnik, a programme of bold new work

Call: 01382 223530 Visit: dundeerep.co.uk scottishdancetheatre.com created and performed by our company dancers. You can get involved too, at our regular dance classes with something for all ages and levels of experience. This season of celebration begins with Ian McKellen on Stage. Sir Ian ushers in a variety of productions including the classic Jane Eyre, choreographer Wayne McGregor’s award-winning Autobiography, and comedy from Tommy Tiernan, Craig Hill and TapeFace. Younger audiences will be enthralled by Scottish Ballet’s Wee Hansel and Gretel, as well as Slug, Little Red and Whirlybird. We’re also excited to announce that Francis Rossi from Status Quo will be performing in Spring 2020.

Dundee Rep was founded just five days after World War II began, at a moment of immense global significance when the need of artistic expression and reflection were all too real. In another 80 years time, we will be on the cusp of the 22nd century. We believe that over the coming years, organisations like Dundee Rep and Scottish Dance Theatre will be vital in helping to shape the world through the ideas and stories that we create, present and engage in.

TAY BRIDGE On the night of Sunday December 28, 1879, the unthinkable happened. Battered by a ferocious storm, the Tay Bridge collapsed.
WRITER PETER ARNOTT (FROM AN ORIGINAL IDEA BY TOM McGOVERN) DIRECTOR ANDREW PANTON DESIGNER EMILY JAMES LIGHTING DESIGNER SIMON WILKINSON COMPOSER/SOUND DESIGNER MJ MCCARTHY MOVEMENT DIRECTOR EMILY JANE BOYLE
Tay Bridge tells the poignant and unexpected stories of the suddenly interrupted passengers making the journey that night. Who were they? Where were they going? What were they escaping, and where did they believe they were heading? Written by Peter Arnott and directed by Dundee Rep Artistic Director Andrew Panton, Tay Bridge is a heartfelt and moving portrait of an era, and of a group of people who were in the wrong place at the wrong time. A powerful mood piece, Tay Bridge gives a whole new perspective on this famous bridge disaster.

Having toured from Rio to Murthly, to Kirriemuir and Ardler… this action-packed show lands on the Rep stage this Autumn!
A brand new anarchic, fast-paced, (and mostly true) history of Dundee. Alright – ye’ll huv had yer Jute, yer Jam and yer Journalism; but whit about Robin Hood? Or Jack the Ripper? Believe it or not, the city of Dundee has affected the outside world in ways completely out of proportion to its size! Cowboys and Indians? Naw, it cannae claim tae huv invented the genre... but did ye ken that William Duncan of Lochee was one of Hollywood’s first and greatest Stars? Everyone kens aboot Dennis and his dug... but whit about the Dundee School strike that inspired it? Famous Females like stargazer Willimina Fleming and Freethinking Feminist Frances Wright, along wi’ mony a Great man from the city’s illustrious past will feature in a Hilarious and heartfelt, Intriguing and alphabetical, Jam-packed Jaunt through some of the less well Kent tales from Dundee’s Lore... Marra, Mill Workers and McGonagall aside... Mibbe ye’ Never heard tell that the fearsome scourge Of the seven seas, the dreaded Pirate Captain Kidd started his days in Dunders? Quite possible no one telt ye it’s where William Wallace bagged his first Sassenach? The result of (literally days) of extensive, painstaking Rigorous historical Sleuth work as well as some (quite possibly) Tenuous, Unsubstantiated and Very unlikely flights of fancy… Dundee Rep Will titillate, X-cite, illuminate and stimulate You through a roller coaster ride of music, mirth and merriment that is: A to Z of Dundee. Zoiks!!!

Jim McLean might never be called one of Scottish football’s best loved characters, but he will always be described as one of the most respected. While boss of Dundee United, McLean did something that no-one thought possible, and turned a provincial football club into a genuine, European force, though not without cost.

When a local boy goes missing, a group of extraordinarily ordinary teenagers are drawn into an adventure that is as exciting as it is unexpected. Its government has declared a vicious class war. A one-sided war... we have started to fight back... with bombs. Against a backdrop of Tory cuts, high unemployment and the deregulated economy of 1970’s Britain, a young urban guerrilla group mobilises: The Angry Brigade. Their targets are MPs, embassies, police, pageant queens. A world of order is shattered by anarchy and the rules have changed. An uprising has begun. No-one is exempt. As a special police squad hunt the homegrown terrorists whose identities shocked the nation, James Graham’s heart-stopping thriller lures us into a frenzied world that looks much like our own.
Directed by Lisa Williamson, this new Play has been commissioned by Derby Theatre, Dundee Rep, Leeds Playhouse, Northern Stage, Royal & Derngate and Theatre Royal Plymouth.

I’m celebrating my 80th birthday by touring a new solo show to theatres I know well and a few that I don’t. Live theatre has always been thrilling to me, as an actor and in the audience. Growing up in Lancashire, I was grateful to those companies who toured beyond London and I’ve always enjoyed repaying that debt by touring up and down the country myself, with the RSC, the National Theatre, Prospect Theatre, the Actors’ Company, as well as with commercial productions. I began my career working for repertory companies in England and I’ve watched with admiration Dundee’s dedication to presenting an ensemble in a variety of plays, thrilling for actors as well as audience over many a season. All profits will benefit a campaign to celebrate 80 years of Dundee Rep Theatre.
