Outstanding in the Field is the pioneer of pop-up dining—a traveling restaurant without walls whose open-air dinners celebrate farmers and the gifts of the land. Every year from May through November, Outstanding in the Field stages about 80 events at farms, ranches and orchards across North America. In May and June, the group hosts dinners up and down the state of California before hitting the road in early July to weave their way across the country, partnering with top regional chefs for dinners from Walla Walla to Washington DC, Vermont to Virginia, Decatur to Dallas and back home again to their home base in Santa Cruz, California. At an Outstanding feast, you could find yourself sitting next to one of the local farmers who provided ingredients for the menu. Fellow diners at the long table may have traveled from across town or across the country. SANTA BARBARA, CALIFORNIA If you want to know where to live, ask a flight attendant. It may not be a traditional adage, but it should be. Choosing a favorite city after seeing them all seems impossible, but when realtor Suzanne Perkins with Sotheby’s International Realty wrapped up her high-flying career with Pan American Airways in favor of something more local, there was no question of where to settle: Santa Barbara. “I wouldn’t consider living any place else,” she says. “This is, to me, utopia.” World-class cultural amenities include major film festivals, museums, theaters and incredible dining. “When you’re looking at a two-, three- or four-million-dollar house, the presentation is often lacking,” he says. At minimum the essentials are excellent photos, brochures, virtual tours and mailings. Then there’s staging, the artful addition of fine furnishings and accessories, which can make an attractive home stand out. McDadi says, “Realtors haven’t grasped the concept of staging to get the most for a house.” Advertising, too, gets short shrift, particularly in the upper brackets. “Marketing in international publications brings great exposure,” he says. “That’s a disconnect in the high-end world. You have to reach people on a global level.” Social media? McDadi employs a professional journalist to manage his Twitter, Facebook and web sites, essential tools in today’s market. As for himself, he’s hired a driver. “One of the best things I’ve ever done for my business. Now I use drive time as production time, and I’m not a hazard on the road!”
