While we won’t delve into a history lesson about the Declaration of Independence, we at duPont REGISTRY will introduce you to something that could have benefited Paul Revere in his midnight ride: the 2024 1000HP TwinTurbocharged YENKO/SC® C8 Corvette.

Inspiration for this powerhouse of a Corvette comes from the infamous ZL-1 aluminum big-block engine found in a very limited run of Camaros and Corvettes that Chevrolet’s Central O ce Production Center (COPO) produced. Giving the C8 Corvette’s engine a bit of independence from Chevrolet’s stock form is a pair of 58mm ceramic ball-bearing water-cooled turbochargers. When it comes to American performance and design, one name truly stands out: Yenko/SC. This year marks the start of the next chapter in a legacy that has defined automotive excellence for decades — the Yenko/SC 1,000-horsepower C8 Corvette by Specialty Vehicle Engineering. This limited-run special edition honors the original ZL-1 Corvettes and is designed with a specific clientele in mind: those who live for performance intertwined with history.

In a nod to the fierce competition of 1969’s muscle car era — when Chevrolet’s Central O ce Production Order (COPO) system equipped select Camaros and Corvettes with a 427-cubic-inch V8 engine — SVE has infused that same spirit into 10 new C8 Corvettes. These vehicles, which we may rightly call resurrected legends, marry a deep appreciation for vintage muscle with the latest in automotive technology.

The power behind the 2024 Yenko/ SC C8 Corvette comes from a 6.2liter LT2 engine, customized with twin-turbochargers featuring ceramic ball-bearing, water-cooled technology. This powerhouse includes a forged steel crankshaft, forged H-beam rods, and forged 2618 aluminum pistons, designed to withstand the rigors of extreme boost levels. The ensemble is completed with high-strength ARP head and main studs, CNC-ported high-flow cylinder heads, and a proprietary ground camshaft.

We scouted some of Southern California’s best roads in McLaren’s Grand Tourer.

We left San Diego shortly after sunrise, before the day’s commuters could clog up the highways that lead through the forests east of the city and across the open desert to the Palm Springs area. This route, starting with a glimpse of the Pacific and ending in a valley that sees at most 5 inches of rain yearly, makes for an ideal run to sample McLaren’s 612-horsepower GT on some of the best roads in Southern California.

With our strikingly bright Tokyo Cyan–finished McLaren GT pointing toward Interstate 8, we departed San Diego, leaving its dazzling ocean views awaking in the dayglow with the small town of Descanso set as our first stop. Introduced in 2019, Woking’s grand tourer will be replaced later this year when deliveries of the reworked GTS begin.

Power from its 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 rises to 626 horsepower while its weight dips by 22 pounds, allowing this model to beat its predecessor to 60 and 124 mph. The nose lift now raises in four seconds — half the time it took its predecessor. While the exterior bodywork receives mild updates to sharpen the GTS aesthetic, McLaren now o ers a wider variety of interior and exterior options, allowing for greater flexibility in configuration.

The McLaren GT proved a trusty companion from San Diego to Palm Springs and beyond.

Thrill behind the wheel defines the McLaren DNA, and the marque’s superlight Grand Tourer is no exception. Interior comforts make a lengthy drive easy, while performative capabilities make it immeasurably fun.

THE TWISTS KEPT COMING AS WE DESCENDED THOUSANDS OF FEET OVER A HANDFUL OF MILES. WE’D DIVE IN WITH THE FRONT END FIRMLY PLANTED AND BLAST OUT THE OTHER, ONLY TO GET BACK ON THE BRAKE PEDAL AND DO IT AGAIN.

We quickly picked up a few thousand feet of elevation on the highway blast up to Descanso, with the GT comfortably cruising as its adaptive dampers smoothed road imperfections like few supercars can. Turning o Interstate 8 and onto California State Route 79, we traded wide open lanes for a snaking road flanked by lush forests whose twists become tighter with elevation gain as we neared Julian. Sitting at 4,226 feet and known chiefly for its pies, this small town is home to just 1,377 people, one of the densest we’d see until we hit the desert.

As we pushed north toward Warner Springs, the road straightened considerably, allowing the GT to stretch its legs as we were now in near isolation. Unlike many of Southern California’s great driving roads, this route is perfectly paved and ideal for high-speed runs, with only subtle changes

in elevation and a clear view granted by a flattened landscape. The scene began to turn yellow as we hit areas that rarely see rainfall, periodically interrupted by remnants of the greenery we’d seen in the forest. Only wide sweepers interrupted the plentiful straights, allowing us to carry tremendous speed as we worked our way north.

A right turn onto California State Route 371 provided some much-needed cooldown time before we’d have to gently traverse a few small towns on the edge of the desert. Having set off over two hours earlier, the GT’s odometer had risen by 121 miles since we’d left San Diego. However, the break was brief; when we turned onto California State Route 74, the road began to tighten even more as we climbed toward Ribbonwood. Intense winds began to push the 3,384-pound GT from side to side as the asphalt served up quick switchbacks.

Tackling this route on a weekday meant we had the road practically to ourselves. As we passed Taylor, and with Palm Springs almost in sight, we hit the most satisfying collection of bends in the entire trip. The twists kept coming as we descended thousands of feet of elevation over a handful of miles. We’d dive in with the GT’s front end firmly planted and blast out the other end, only to get back on

the firm brake pedal and do it again. We stopped for photos, jumping out of the GT with sweaty palms, accelerated heart rates, and the desire to do it all over again. Our vividly configured McLaren sharply contrasted against the sandy desert below with its vibrant hue. We slowed considerably as we entered the Palm Springs area, reaching the end of our trek after 160 miles and threeand-a-half hours.

Southern California is home to some of the best driving roads in the world, and this desert dash from San Diego to Palm Springs is up there with the very best. Combining a healthy alternating set of tight and technical twists with open sweepers and plenty of straights makes it an enjoyable route regardless of what you choose to tackle it with. Although our GT may market itself as a practical supercar, the kind you could use daily, its carbon-fiber monocoque, powerful twin-turbo V8, and finely tuned adaptive suspension mean it’s still a supercar first. Eager for even more time behind the wheel, we pointed the GT’s nose towards Los Angeles as the sun set. Given its proximity to multiple major cities, this collection of highways, winding roads, and deserted twolane ribbons of asphalt, we had no choice but to keep going.

The muscle car, as we know it, is dying. Change is inevitable, of course, and in this day and age, the change of electrification in the automotive industry is transforming its entire landscape, and the world of American muscle cars is seeing one of the most dramatic changes of all.

With Chevrolet sending off its Camaro amid speculation of an electrified replacement, and Dodge ceremoniously bidding farewell to its legendary suite of HEMI V8-powered performance cars and SUVs like the Challenger and Charger Hellcat and 392, Challenger Demon 170, and others, plenty of American performance enthusiasts feel as though the muscle car species is undergoing a mass extinction.

Seeing this sendo of the very best of American V8 performance from OEMs across the country is certainly bittersweet. But Dodge has already shown us the next chapter with the introduction of the new Charger, which contains the Charger’s first-ever all-electric powertrain, and a powerful six-cylinder model, as well.

Perhaps, the future will embrace a new crop of muscle cars that show o American performance in the form of smaller engines and electrified drivetrains. But until then, the concept of the muscle car many of us know and love today is a dying breed, and that’s certainly a loss worth mourning.

soaring performance figures, isn’t ready to go just yet? Of course, OEMs have reached the point at which they have to switch gears and keep up with the evolution of industry standards, but enthusiasts are still able to hold on to the purist American performance philosophy with cars that are unabashedly loud and fast, with the help of tuning and customization firms.

In the past, tuning houses often epitomized the pinnacle of American performance (think Callaway Corvettes, Saleen Mustangs, Hennessey Vipers, etc.). But for some years, they took a relative backseat as OEM

muscle cars got more brash and zany with their performance figures. Today, tuning houses are entering the limelight as the final bastion of the purist muscle car. Look to firms like SVE, who o er the heritage-inspired Yenko/SC Camaro with as much as 1,500 horsepower in the Stage III conversion, or even 800-horsepower versions of luxurious three-row family SUVs like the Tahoe and Escalade.

Meanwhile, the iconic Hennessey o ers powerful conversions for plenty of American staples, showing o the everlasting thrill of V8 performance in its Corvette, Mustang, TRX, and Cadillac conversions, even boasting 6x6 trucks for an added head-turning factor. There’s no sugar-coating the fact that the American muscle car has reached the end of an era as we know it, but it’s not over just yet, and thanks to tuning firms across the country, it’s not going out without a bang.

1. MINKE SLOE GIN CRANBERRY MARTINI

• 2 ounces Minke Gin

• ½ ounce Sloe Gin

• ½ ounce Lime juice

• 1 teaspoon Cranberry jelly

• 1 Lime slice, for garnish

• 3 Cranberries, for garnish

Directions

Add all ingredients to an icefilled shaker and shake until the shaker is cold. Strain into a chilled glass. Garnish with a slice of lime and a few fresh cranberries.

2. BROKEN BLUEBERRY

• 2 ounces Broken Shed Vodka

• ¾ ounce Fresh lemon juice

• ¾ ounce Blueberry syrup

• 1 Egg white

• 3 Blueberries, for garnish

Directions

Dry shake all ingredients, then shake again with ice. Double strain into a coupe glass, and garnish with the blueberries.

MAYENDA ELEVATED PALOMA

• 2 ounces Mayenda Reposado Tequila

• 1 ounce Grapefruit juice

• ½ ounce Lime juice

• ½ ounce Honey syrup

• Pinch Smoked salt

• Splash Club soda

• 1 Grapefruit wedge, for garnish

Directions Mix tequila, juice, syrup, and salt and pour over ice. Top with club soda. For garnish, dip grapefruit wedge in honey syrup and torch for a brûlée e ect.

4. JEPTHA CREED BOURBON PEACH TEA

• 2 ounces Jeptha Creed Bourbon

• ½ ounce Peach liquor

• ½ ounce Lemon juice

• ½ ounce Simple syrup

• 2 dashes Black walnut bitters

• Splash Black Tea

• 3 Peach slices

• 1 Lemon slice, for garnish

Directions

Muddle peaches in a highball glass. Add ice and all remaining ingredients except tea and stir. Top with black tea. Garnish with lemon.

Lange & Söhne’s newest Datograph Up/Down flyback chronograph watch is crafted in 18-karat white gold with a deep-blue dial and silvered subsidiary dials. First unveiled to the world in 1999, the Datograph line of timepieces measures shorttime intervals and boasts a flyback mechanism that enables the counter to fly back to the beginning to start timing anew without the need for pressing extra pushers for stop and reset to zero. Incredibly complex to build, the newest platinum IWC Portugieser Eternal Calendar goes where no man has gone before: to include a moonphase accurate for 45 million years. This astronomical feat was years in the making and boasts a 400-year gear system that enables the perpetual calendar to account for months with varying lengths (like most perpetual calendars) along with leap years and skipped leap years (skipped in order for the solar calendar to sync with the Gregorian calendar) for centuries to come. 4. Roger Dubuis Orbis in Machina

For the first time in years, Roger Dubuis unveils a timepiece with a central tourbillon — a rarity in watchmaking. The tourbillon, which compensates for errors in timekeeping due to forces of gravity on the watch in certain positions, is usually placed at 12 o’clock or 6 o’clock on a watch simply for construction and dial-configuration purposes. But in the case of the Orbis in Machina, more easily referred to as Central Monotourbillion, the magnificent constantly moving escapement is smack in the center of the dial. Created in a limited edition of only 88 pieces, the watch has a decidedly modern appeal with open-worked skeletonized 283-part movement. Devoid of a dial, the time on the 45-millimeter 18-karat rose gold watch is displayed using open-worked hands on the outer edges. $225,000.

Easily the most technically advanced Freak watch to date (the collection was first launched in 2001), the new Freak S Nomad is a three-dimensional work of art and technology. In the center of the dial-less watch is a spaceship-like apparatus comprised of the 373-part watch movement with two oscillators with silicon balance wheels and a flying “carousel” (a device similar to a tourbillon and used to counter gravity forces and improve accuracy). Crafted in high-tech titanium and carbon fiber, the 45-millimeter watch is equipped with the brand’s proprietary patented Grinder automatic winding system.
