Recently, a close friend I’ll call Bob texted me with a very specific sort of problem. Bob and his wife were joining me and a few other friends for a four-day rally in the Hudson Valley. The foliage was in full bloom. We had chosen some of the most impeccable and overlooked driving roads in the world, and booked track time at Lime Rock Park. We had set the table for one of those epic sports car enthusiast experiences that money (mostly) can’t buy. Bob and Amy live in Houston, and he was putting his car in a truck to ship to NY. Simple logistics. Except for his specific sort of problem. When he texted me, a couple of weeks before the rally, he was standing in his garage trying to decide which of his most recently acquired Ferraris to ship north: the 812 Superfast or the SF90 Spider. “Am I going to want the top down?” he asked. “Is it yankee cold up there, or just a little chilly?” Tough call, Bob. And one that you’re fortunate enough to get to make. “The weather can go any direction this time of year,” I said. “Expect a sunburn, prepare for a hurricane.” The moment I typed the word hurricane, I knew the answer: Bring the 812 Superfast. It’s more comfortable for the passenger than the SF90, arguably more appealing to look at, and it just so happens to be the fastest road car Ferrari has ever built. It has that endangered species of an F140 V-12, which, when Bob bought this car in 2019, was probably the most powerful air-breathing, unboosted production engine ever made. “To hell with the SF90,” I said. “Make it Superfast.” It’s a fun debate for a select few lucky enough to have skin in the game: engine in the middle or engine up front? 1,000-hp twin-turbo V8 hybrid or the monster of all V12s? But ultimately it comes down to the thinnest slices of the most delightful pie: there is no wrong answer. And that’s why it feels wrong to call the SF90 an inferior Ferrari. It’s all relative. But the truth is, I’m not alone in never fully buying into this evolution of the 488 and F8 Tributo—there just didn’t seem to be enough of an evolution. Now that the mind-melting SF90XX has arrived, I feel vindicated. We sent Basem Wasef to Italy, where he took this race-prepped (though street-legal) XX variant to the limit on Enzo Ferrari’s backyard race track, Fiorano, outside Maranello. Under a looming threat of rain, Basem experienced a version of the SF90 we all wanted. You’ll have to turn to page 12 to read the details. This story starts where all great Ferrari legends begin: the 1.86-mile Fiorano test circuit. I’m strapping into the Ferrari SF90 XX. It’s a heady moment. Just to my right is old man Enzo’s original office, where he scowled over innumerable track tests. Today, the drama comes from the car itself, as well as an impending storm that’s darkening the sky. I fire up the V8, and the engine rattles the passenger cabin. This is not your average Ferrari. The intake plenum tube is moved closer to the interior, and it makes a lot of noise. But does the XX have the stuff of mythology? The further we car freaks are dragged kicking and screaming from our internal combustion roots, the more of a gift to our psyche each oldschool hypercar becomes. Now, it seems like every time one comes along, an expectation grows that it will be as mythical as the 250 GTO or the Enzo. Once in a while, Ferrari writes another chapter in its long narrative of myths. When we first saw the SF90, it had all the power and speed, but it didn’t pack that intangible ingredient to merit its own chapter. The 986-horsepower and the half-million-dollar cost wasn’t enough. It didn’t wander far from the stylistic design language of other Ferraris; blur your eyes, and it bore resemblance to plainer. Crucially, Maranello didn’t cap its production to one fewer than market demand, per Il Commendatore’s infamous edict. That was two strikes against hypercar immortality. Enter this SF90 XX. Massaged by engineers and test drivers and modified by stylistic conjuror Flavio Manzoni, the SF90 XX looks like it was conceived in a parallel universe to the donor car, in a world where high-spec swagger flows freely and mingles with impeccable taste. Forget the flush surfaces and elegant restraint: The XX has dimensionality in person, more complex curves, and enough swoops and contours to fool Zeus himself. Ferrari has been building ultra-exclusive, track-only specials under the XX banner since 2005. Past examples include unhinged offshoots like the Enzo F-XX and the FXX-K EVO, whose V12 hybrid churned over 1,000 horsepower before four-figure output was fashionable. The most rarified of XX social classes are the members of the F1 Corse Cliente program. If

you’ve ever dreamt of owning your own Ferrari Formula 1 car for private track days and have metric tons of cash burning a hole in your offshore bank account, you’ve found your people. The SF90 XX is the first fully street legal model to bear the XX tag. It also borrows elements from extraordinary Ferraris like the 458 Speciale and F12tdf, limited-run models that go above and beyond the scope of serial production cars. Despite its license-plate-mandated limitations, the XX Stradale and Spider’s bodies look wilder and more ambitious than the standard-issue SF90’s; the carbon fiber and aluminum skin, replete with slats, inlets, and spoilers, might as well have been designed by Agent Provocateur. Punchier and more imposing in the flesh, the XX looks swole at any speed. The front end wears large nostrils hiding twin internal S-ducts that maximize cooling and downforce while eliminating storage space for your golden gold clubs. This feature, shared with the 488 GT3 and 296 GT3 race cars, sucks air through radiators for the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8; additional air cooling is provided by intercooler radiators just ahead of the rear wheels. The increased porosity along with an enlarged front splitter, new wheel arch louvers, strategic vortex generators, and reworked underbody air routing negotiate a delicate dance between downforce and drag; the 12 percent increase in intake air volume obviates the need for larger radiators while leaving the overall drag coefficient of the car untouched. The elongated haunches resolve in a longtailstyle rear end. Interestingly, a sweeping LED strip makes the XX look more like a lovechild from Molsheim than a purebred Modenese. The visual theater of the twin-turbo V8 remains, and the powerplant is tucked far below a Lexan lid. Rounding out the rump is a large rear spoiler complemented by a discreet shut-off Gurney flap. While not as demonstrative as the honking rear wing of the 911 GT3 RS, the feature is a big deal for Ferrari, as it’s the first road-going model to wear a fixed rear spoiler since the late, great F40 and F50 models. Rather than rely on driver input, algorithms manage the Gurney flap’s position: When low drag is required, the flap stays down to draw airflow below the wing. Under high-speed handling or braking, the flap tilts up to allow the wind to adhere to the wing, pressing the vehicle earthward with an eye-opening 1,168 pounds at 155 mph. That’s about as much force as the eponymously named LaFerrari, one of the true OG flagships. Though the XX wears the extroversion of a race special, the SF90’s powertrain was already close to maxed out and thus enjoys a nominal power increase. The XX gains only 30 horsepower via polished inlet and exhaust ducts, combustion chamber machining, and new pistons, bringing the grand total to a still-notinconsiderable 1,016 horsepower. The added power shaves two tenths of a second from its 0

hints at vast reserves of power ready to be unleashed. While I’m reluctant to lean on what are presumably considerable levels of downforce in the wet, dropping the hammer in a straight line summons immense amounts of torque that devour pavement at an alarming rate. There’s an accuracy to the controls that makes it gratifying to explore the SF90 XX’s limits: Steering feels clear and communicative, the brakes produce tremendous stops when stood upon, and the throttle manages the interplay between gas and electric power with linearity. Aided by the torque vectoring effects of the two front motors and the smart ABS individually applied to each wheel by the stability control system, I know it’s not my natural born skill that’s keeping my borrowed steed from skidding off the circuit. However, it’s not until I review the onboard telemetry that I see how much the computers were holding back. Overlaid against a trace of lead test driver Raffaele de Simone’s lap, there are moments when I flat-foot the accelerator unnecessarily, producing a flatline of engine output because the computer sees the futility in trying to lay down all that power onto wet tarmac. There are also times when I stubbornly try to wring out the most from a gear when a simple upshift would have generated more traction. While the machine makes you feel like a rock star, screaming and wailing and cornering despite the pools of water separating you from serious G forces, it’s the quick-thinking electronics that make the SF90 XX seem more supple and manageable in the rain than its spec sheet might suggest. With its all-wheel drive, seamless electric assist, and finely tuned steering and damping systems, the XX is the dance partner you’d want in these conditions — even if it’s capable of producing enough energy to power a home for days. When the long, wet day closes, and it’s time to return home, does the SF90 XX inspire the longing it ought to considering its supreme positioning within the Ferrari lineup? It’s a curious game, this give and take of nomenclature, taxonomy, and branding. Yes, this one still isn’t quite as outrageous as XX models of yore, and there are not yet any Ferrari-sponsored track activities built around this particular model to fully validate its insider status. But as an elaboration of an already elevated model, the SF90 XX bangs hard against the limits of what can be achieved in a road-legal car; under more favorable conditions, it proved its mettle by besting the brand’s lap record for a road car at Fiorano by 1.7 seconds. If you’re debating the premise any further, you need not worry about the sting of parting with $890,000 for the hardtop or just under a cool mil for the convertible: All 799 coupes and 599 Spiders were spoken for long ago, which has the strange but predictable effect of stirring desire for the things we cannot have.

to 62 mph time, hitting the traps in 2.3 seconds. Unlike the 296’s hybrid components, which can be easily removed to produce a pure internal combustion race car (see: 296 GT), the SF90 intertwines its gas and EV bits more intricately, so they work in lockstep together. That means no physical reverse gear for weight savings, relying instead on the front two (of three) electric motors for backup duty. The eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox has been uprated with software derived from the Daytona SP3 for what Ferrari describes as “more engaging dynamic acceleration profiles.” Exhaust sounds have also been heightened in between shifts, offering a sonic experience similar to throttle lift on overrun. The XX version gains a host of electronic enhancements that up its track game. An ABS evo controller from the 296 GTB enables finer individualized control over brake distribution, more precise vehicle dynamics control based on a six-axis sensor, and improved boost control logic for gutsier charges ahead in Qualifying mode. Hardware mods include stiffening of the Multimatic-sourced titanium springs, which trims roll rates by 10 percent. Back to the track: The interior is all about function, with floormats replaced by hard surfaces and carbon fiber door panels accented with painted scallops available in three brash colors (Flash Orange, Giallo Modena, and Azzurro Dino). When the V8 kicks in, the car feels more uncorked than the tamer, road-tripready SF90. I’m taking it all in from carbon fiber seats. Swaths of carbon and Alcantara surround me. Dead ahead is a digital tach that sweeps to an 8,000 rpm redline, and all manner of customizable information including tire temperature and pressure, fluid temps, etc. In grand Ferrari tradition, the all-in-one steering wheel packs everything from wiper functions to turn signals, featuring the red anodized Mannetino switch at 4 o’clock. An LED light countdown embedded within the top of the wheel translates the upper registers of the rev range into easily interpreted shades of urgency. By now the clouds are really rolling in, but I toe the throttle anyway, since there are no promising gaps in the forecast. The strange beauty of trick technology is that despite outrageous power and shitty weather, the flip of a dial can turn an angry machine into a docile pup. Rolling on Bridgestone Potenza S005 rain tires in Wet mode, there’s some grip to be found on the circuit in straight lines, though dipping into the throttle yields thrust that falls short of feeling like you’re tapping into 1,000 horsepower. A quick turn of the Mannetino into Sport, and the car comes more alive, pushing forward with confidence as squeezes of the throttle yield squirts of G forces. Graduate to Race, and minor sidesteps and brief slides reveal that this thoroughbred just wants to hustle. Another session in slightly drier conditions

9. Although we were previously impressed with its coupe counterpart, in 2023, the Maserati MC20 Cielo and its retractable hardtop stole our attention. The Cielo loses none of the coupe’s capabilities or agility, and driving with the top down adds an extra dimension. While its twin-turbo V6 isn’t the most exotic-sounding powerplant in the segment, it creates tons of turbo spooling and whooshing noises that pump drama back in. Without a doubt, what kept us thinking about the Cielo is its styling — it is uncomplicated, elegant, and memorable.

8. The Lotus Emira earned its spot on the list by reminding us what a sports car should be. While its competitors grow larger, heavier, and more tech-filled than ever, the Emira offers all the creature comforts you’d ever want in a package that still feels genuinely light. Hustling it around at practically any speed promises a good time. Close gear ratios mean you’re constantly upshifting and downshifting as you try to keep the revs high. It’s a sports car in the traditional sense — and one we’d choose over some competitors that cost up to twice as much.

capable performance SUV we’ve tested. It’s not only quick in a straight line, but also genuinely athletic in the bends. It tackles a back road like no SUV should be able to, yet it doubles as a cozy commuter. The 2024 model received a facelift and a power bump up to 650 horsepower, making it one of the best all-rounders currently on sale.

5. What impresses most about the Bentley Flying Spur S V8 is how it drives. Downsizing from a W12 to a V8 takes the weight off the nose while its active anti-roll bars and finely tuned suspension allow it to tackle a twisty road in full anger. It is balanced, genuinely agile, and properly quick in a straight line. A subtle growl from the massive exhaust tips further adds a hint of sportiness that results in a nicely rounded driving experience. Oh, and of course, it’s a beautifully appointed luxury sedan, too.

6. Drawing inspiration from the M4 CSL, the M3 CS pushes this sporty sedan’s persona closer to that of a dedicated track toy. It’s lighter, firmer, and more powerful, making it feel far more exciting than its standard production counterpart. Although arguably too stiff to drive daily, the CS is the car we always hoped the M3 Competition would offer. As the carmaker’s products become more refined with each new generation, the CS reminds us that BMW can still build a raw and roaring four-door.

3. Although the McLaren Artura hit some bumps on its way to production, the resulting car is worth the weight. It seamlessly integrates its electric motor with a 120-degree twin-turbo V6 to deliver effortless acceleration despite many behind-the-scenes complexities. Despite housing an electric motor and a small battery pack, the model tips the scales at 3,303 pounds, making it not only mighty with 671 horsepower, but also a genuine lightweight among its peers. Add in hydraulic steering and a stiff chassis, and it delivers tons of feedback, making the Artura one of the most exciting supercars of 2023.

LUCID AIR SAPPHIRE

4. Of the entire list, we spent the least time with the Lucid Air Sapphire, yet it still managed to leave a lasting impression. It’s not just a spec monster, although the 1,234-horsepower output certainly helps. Instead, it’s the Sapphire’s dynamics that landed it in a top spot. Supercar quick in the bends, the Sapphire confidently puts all of its power down in even less-than-ideal conditions thanks to the custom development by Lucid engineers. Perhaps no other car we’ve tested is easier to drive at speed than Lucid’s $250,000 flagship.

1. Although we drove the Ferrari 296 GTB Assetto Fiorano toward the beginning of 2023, nothing else we tested could dethrone it from the top spot. Like the Artura, it combines an electric motor with a 120-degree twin-turbo V6. However, it develops a whopping 819 horsepower, making it one of the quickest cars we’ve ever tested. Speed aside, the 296 is almost faultless from a driving perspective. Behind the wheel, you’d be hard-pressed to sense its heft at 3,700 pounds; the Assetto Fiorano feels light and agile and generates tremendous grip. Yet it’s still easy to hustle through a canyon. Combined with elegant styling and a unique engine note, the 296 GTB tops our list as the most memorable drive of 2023.

ROLLS-ROYCE SPECTRE

2. Worthy of a long list of superlatives, the electrified Rolls-Royce Spectre is likely the quietest and most comfortable luxury car we’ve ever tested. We’ve driven it around Napa Valley, through the Valley of Fire, and on a road trip from Las Vegas to Los Angeles. Every time we log miles, the Spectre further cements itself as one of our favorites. Costing more than $500,000 with options, such excellence is expected. What isn’t is how far it surpasses even its closest siblingsdrive of 2023.

“We always look for a strong connection between our rich history and our present,” says Jascha Straub, the lead designer at Bugatti’s Sur Mesure individualization program, which translates clients’ fantasies into automotive reality. “Under the credo, ‘Looking back allows me to look forward’ from our company founder Ettore Bugatti, I wanted to prepare a spec which pays homage to one of our most iconic cars.” Under the skin, the car is a “standard” Chiron Super Sport, which means it possesses an outrageous 1,580-horsepower 8-liter quadturbocharged 16-cylinder engine driving all four wheels, able to power the two-seater to a visionblurring top speed of 273 mph. But a number of significant changes were made to the exterior. The most evident is in the classic “horseshoe” radiator grille up front, which, according to Straub, was “changed from the standard Chiron mesh to vertical lines and a thick center spine, to translate the design of the Atlantic grille onto a modern car.” Additional changes include the Lightning Blue embroidery of the highly recognizable silhouette of the Type 57 SC Atlantic on the interior door panels, as well as an etching of its profile on the rear wing. The Bugatti family icon, the Dancing Elephant, is embroidered on the headrests, denoting the owner’s love of animals. The signature of Jean Bugatti — the son of the founder, who is credited with much of the design work on the Type 57 SC Atlantic — swirls across the car’s door sill. And the center console features a glossy triangular inlay that reads “57 One of One.” A sea of flawless “gaucho” vicuna-colored leather complements the interior work. The exterior color, a rich ultramarine, also sources its inspiration directly from the Mullin car. But matching the hue precisely wasn’t simple. At the time of customization by Sur Measure, the Mullin’s Type 57 SC Atlantic was part of an exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao called Motion: Autos, Art, Architecture. So Straub had to travel to Spain. “I flew to Bilbao with a color swatch that we had created to observe the paintwork under different light conditions,” Straub says. “It needed to be completely authentic to the original.” The Chiron is on its way out, having sold through its 500-car production run. Its replacement will be a technological hybrid gasoline/electric marvel, created in collaboration with Croatian electric supercar manufacturer Rimac, which recently merged with Bugatti. But Straub doesn’t view this commission as the end of the line. “We don’t see our cars as outgoing,” he says. “We consider Bugatti cars as timeless masterpieces.”

were introduced to Formula 1 in 2021 to liven up various race weekends throughout the season. On a weekend with a sprint race, the qualifying session for race day shifts from Saturday to Friday afternoon. This pivot opens Saturday for a shorter qualifying session to determine the order of the sprint race, followed by the sprint, in which the top eight finishers earn points. By adding sprint races to the calendar, Formula 1 officials have made every day of the race weekend more impactful for the championship. With the introduction of sprint races, however, opponents have been vocal. Naysayers see the Saturday sprint action as a distraction from the race itself. What’s more, many note that the finishing order of the sprint race acts as a spoiler of what’s to come during the grand prix. For drivers and teams, the additional bout on the track is just another opportunity for a car to get damaged and dash their hopes for a solid showing on Sunday.

side of the spectrum, some see the sprint races as a way to make the entire race weekend more exciting to watch. Instead of practice sessions on Friday, fans are treated with intense qualifying action; then, they get to watch what could be considered a “mini grand prix” on Saturday and the main event on Sunday. A handful of drivers welcome the change of pace and see potential in what the sprint races have to offer. The more action the better, right? It’s been interesting to see how divisive the Formula 1 community has become over sprint races. Still, the higher-ups seem adamant about keeping the format. For the upcoming 2024 season, the calendar maintains six sprint races, even with the number of grand prixs increasing to 24. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has also shown interest in creating an award in the vein of a Grand Slam if a driver takes pole at both qualis and first place in the sprint race and grand prix. Of course, we will have to wait and see what’s in store, as we wait for more information regarding the upcoming season.

Richard Mille RM UP-01 Ferrari First unveiled in summer 2022 in Maranello, Italy, around the corner from the Ferrari factory, the RM UP-01 Ferrari watch broke records and became a world’s first for its technical mastery and pioneering vision. But precision requires patience. Billed as the world’s thinnest mechanical watch, the watch is so challenging and time-consuming to create that it is only now finally coming to market — and in extremely limited numbers (150 pieces). The vertical tonneau-shaped case is flipped on its side and measures 1.75 millimeters in thickness — that’s the equivalent of a dime. Its inner movement is a stand-alone caliber, making headlines as the thinnest mechanical movement in the world. Girard-Perregaux Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition Girard-Perregaux has been the Official Watch Partner for Aston Martin Lagonda and Aston Martin Cognizant F1 Team since 2021, and thus far, the pair has released five collaboration watches. The most recent, inspired by the world’s first Super Tourer, the DB12, hit the market in December. The Neo Bridges Aston Martin Edition bares it all with an open-worked movement whose parts are visible from the dial side and the case back. Part of the Bridges collection, the watch dial features Neo-shaped bridges in Aston Martin Green that support the gear train and balance. Luminescent hands glow green in the dark. A self-winding mechanical movement consisting of 208 parts powers the 45-millimeter watch. Only 250 pieces will be made. $37,700

3. Jacob & Co. Bugatti Chiron Since 2019, Jacob & Co. has cultivated a close partnership with Bugatti, creating timepieces that seem to rev like the W16 engines powering its hypercars. There have been multiple iterations of the Bugatti watch. The most recent, the Bugatti Chiron Tourbillon Rose Gold, features a complicated manual-winding movement with 578 individual components. The parts are suspended inside with shock absorbers and pistons that power up and down on the crankshaft on demand. There are even two “turbochargers” on the side of the engine block that spin while the watch engine runs. It is equipped with an inclined (30-degree angle) tourbillon— the first time Jacob & Co. has used an inclined tourbillon — that compensates for errors in timekeeping due to the effects of gravity when the watch is in certain positions on the wrist. The Bugatti and Chiron logos grace the watch, of which only 72 pieces will be made. $380,000

Roger Dubuis Lamborghini Excalibur Spider Monobalancier Huracán Americas For more than six years, Roger Dubuis has worked side-byside with Lamborghini to develop creative designs, materials, and horological mechanics that complement both brands. The newest Huracán Americas watch was made exclusively for the American market and limited to 88 pieces. Crafted in titanium, the 45-millimeter Excalibur Spider Monobalancier is crafted in black with a Diamond-Like-Carbon titanium bezel and lacquered markings. The bold dial with blue titanium accents, is open-worked to reveal part of the 233-part RD630 self-winding movement with tilted balance wheel. The watch features a transparent sapphire case back for viewing the movement and is finished with a black rubber strap with blue Alcantara inlays. $64,500

How three Swiss watch brands captivated collectors around the world.

Sometimes referred to in the watch world as the “Big Three,” the “Holy Trinity” refers to the three brands that most experts in the horological field consider to be kings — Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet, and Vacheron Constantin. The trinity term arose in the 1970s, and these brands garnered an early foothold. Today’s watch pundits might argue that more recently revived names like A. Lange & Söhne or larger-production brands like Rolex should make the list. However, the three ultra-luxury Swiss giants share certain traits that position them at the forefront. Among those traits: rich heritage, incredible innovation, and centuries-old experience handed down from generation to generation. Vacheron Constantin, for instance, was founded in 1755 and is the longest continually operating Swiss brand in existence today. Patek Philippe formed in 1839 as Patek, Czapek & Cie. and continues to this day as an independent, family-owned business that creates watches destined to live for centuries. (The brand’s advertising slogan is well known: “You never actually own a Patek Philippe, you merely look after it for the next generation.”) Audemars Piguet was founded in 1875 and has been a leader in some of the most important designs and innovations. Indeed, each of these brands is known for its innovations in movements, functions, features, and design. Each has unveiled timepieces with grand complications — including some of the most complicated watches in the world — holds multiple patents, and is recognized for its fine hand-finishing of movement parts, carrying coveted hallmarks like the Côtes de Genève.While each brand creates a host of collections, all three are well-known for either a specific collection that has set them apart, or for a special complication. Vacheron Constantin Because of its history and long-standing leadership in creating luxury timepieces, Vacheron Constantin is perhaps best known for its ultra-complications and re-creations of historical pieces.
