It’s one thing to find your dream car, but another entirely to dream of it and bring that very car to life. This degree of ideation and customization is exactly what Porsche o ers through their Sonderwunsch program. With a variety of services available for classic, current, and future vehicle production, Porsche is making dreams a reality.

To better understand exactly what this program is, we’ll first need to look at the terminology itself. The word “Sonderwunsch” translates from German to mean “Special Wishes” and originated from“Sonderwunschabteilung,” a group within Porsche that handled special modification requests going back to 1970. This department customized series vehicles, and even occasionally created unique “oneo ” models.

Today, the Sonderwunsch program lets customers dream bigger than ever before by restoring, or even fully recommissioning classic and current Porsche cars. In some cases, this even means customers working directly with designers and engineers to realize their vision.

At the start of any Sonderwunsch project is a consultation to understand both the client goals, and the vehicle slated to be worked on. In this meeting, a variety of paint and material samples can be compared and seen in various lighting conditions, giving inspiration for the first round of design implementation. Next, the client previews the project in rendered images to allow adjustments before any physical work is done to the vehicle.

Depending on the scope of work, projects can fall into three categories: Sonderwunsch Factory Commission, Sonderwunsch Factory •••

Re-Commission and Sonderwunsch One-O .

‘Sonderwunsch Factory Commission’ grants customers expansive creative control over color and trim selections before production and delivery of the vehicle. With this option, the car is built exclusively for the person designing it.

‘Sonderwunsch Factory Re-Commission’ grants the ability to re-specify options on an existing vehicle as far back as the 356, as if it were a factory-new order. Working through a state-ofthe-art facility in Atlanta, and two facilities outside Stuttgart, Germany, Porsche Classic manages all Sonderwunsch Factory Re-Commission projects, regardless of model line or model year. With the help of a dedicated personalization consultant, the expert technicians and craftsmen, and the customer themself, the vehicle will leave the factory, like new, in its final dream state.

Throughout the process, the cars receive a full mechanical overhaul, down to each internal component of the engine and transmission. With over 82,500 Genuine Porsche Classic parts, along with current model Genuine Porsche parts, the team has excellent access to the components necessary to ensure each vehicle is just as capable as it is beautiful.

The exceptional mechanical team is matched with dedicated artisans at the helm of the visual redesign process as well. The body of the car will be thoroughly examined by paint and bodywork experts, and returned to original specifications should any evidence of previous damage arise. From there, the team will strip the body down to bare metal and protect against future corrosion with an epoxy base coat. With the base layer set, the new vision starts to come to life as each coat of color is applied. While the client may certainly choose to opt for non-permanent decals if they prefer, any desired livery for these projects is typically hand painted, sparing no design detail. As crucial as the exterior is, the interior is where driver and machine become one. While work is underway in the paint booth, the upholstery team is in action-utilizing templates to

exact the vision brought forward by the client in their future cockpit. When designing this area, owners can adjust almost any aesthetic element throughout. From dashboard materials, fabric options, and a seemingly endless variety of stitching colors, no two vehicles need be the same. In fact, the option to create a ‘non-repeatable spec’ is available to ensure that will remain the case, confirming that your build is one-of-a-kind forever.

The final category of the program, ‘Sonderwunsch One-O ’, is the most exclusive of all. This option allows customers to modify both mechanical and structural components of current street driven Porsche vehicles. The initial example of this segment of the Sonderwunsch program is the Classic Club Coupe, which was developed on the Type 996 911 platform using a 1998 911 Carrera. As there was no Classic Club Coupe initially, the Porsche teams collaborated with the client, Porsche Club of America, to integrate all the features needed to make this dream a reality. By implementing specific design and mechanical elements like a ducktail spoiler, custom paint, a double bubble roof, a bespoke interior, and GT3 drivetrain, the client and Porsche teams created a one-of-a-kind machine that looks right at home in the Sport Classic line-up.

How the McLaren 750S evolves existing knowledge to create one of the best-driving supercars on the market.

The concept behind the McLaren 750S is simple: Take the bedrock foundation of the sublime 720S and add 30 percent new or updated parts, including some poached o the 765LT. The end result manifests as a potent blend of McLaren’s road-and track-focused cars. But while the 750S leans slightly lighter, more powerful, and quicker than the 720S, the earlier model could already keep up with hypercars. So why is the 750S important?

Like the 720S that inspired it, the McLaren 750S is a hypercar masquerading as a supercar. Its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 now develops 740 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, up 30 horsepower and 22 pound-feet, all of which goes to its rear wheels. Despite these herculean figures, McLaren’s wellcalibrated traction control system steps in precisely when you need it to, allowing the 750S to put down practically all its power.

Dive into a corner in the 750S, and you’ll feel the cumulative e ects of the car’s subtle but focused improvements. Its hydraulically assisted power steering rack is still the most talkative of any modern supercar, now made even quicker thanks to revised ratios. Its coil spring and semi-active damper suspension are now lighter by 4.4 pounds, 3 percent softer up front, and 4 percent firmer in the back, while the 750S’ overall track widens by 0.3 inches.

Handling that power is made easy thanks to updated Comfort, Sport, and Track handling and powertrain modes in the 750S, alongside a new Variable Drift Control, which allows drivers to dial in how much they’d like the rear end to step around before the car’s computers kick in. Despite its slightly firmer suspension, the 750S retains the duality the 720S is famous for. It confidently

Released as a Coupe and a Spider, the McLaren 750S delivers unparalleled levels of speed, agility, and handling precision, leaving its competitors in the rearview.

tackles significant road imperfections in Comfort mode while dialing out body roll and delivering balance and stability in Sport and Track.

The result is an agile, grippy, and nicely balanced front end, which combines with a rear that, although tail happy when provoked, will hold on nicely when driven with intention. And although similar words could aptly describe the 720S, the 750S builds with an added layer of connectedness. You can look deep into a corner and imagine where you’d like to place it, and it intrinsically follows your inputs.

The big story, however, is how dramatic its acceleration feels as you blast out of a bend. Due to its shorter gears, you not only spend more time clicking through them but also hover around its 8,500 rpm redline for far longer. Its top speed may shrink from 212 mph to a frankly pedestrian 206 mph, but the 750S is quicker overall, especially at slower speeds where theatrical acceleration always beats an unreachable top-speed figure.

We have to look past its headline-worthy stats to answer the earlier question of not just what the 750S is but whether or not its updates make a meaningful di erence. Its 66-pound savings, 30 horsepower bump to 740, and 2.7-second 0 to 60 mph time are impressive, but they’re not the updates with the most significant impact. Instead, this car’s shortened gear ratios, quickened hydraulic steering, and revised suspension shift its focus toward driver engagement. The 750S may not be all-new, but it takes what was already one of the best-driving supercars and improves it in every meaningful way.

Customization has long been an integral part of the experience for automotive enthusiasts. For decades, owners have relished the opportunity to imbue their personalities into their cars, creating stories and legacies with what they do. In the past, this often meant installing aftermarket parts like wheels, body kits, or audio systems. However, more than ever before, customization is taking place with the manufacturer itself, resulting in a wave of stunning bespoke configurations for cars from manufacturers all over the world. Its rise in popularity has taken time, but its growth has been undeniably rapid in recent years.

Some of the most prominent examples are in the ultra-luxury space. Rolls-Royce Bespoke is responsible for coachbuilt, ultraexclusive masterpieces like the Sweptail, Boat Tail, and Droptail, as well as special commissions of its existing models such as the Phantom Syntopia, which was created with painstaking effort and attention to detail. Meanwhile, Bentley’s Mulliner division o ers clients a vast range of options, and the opportunity to configure the smallest details of vehicles, as well as creating one-offs, limited-edition collections, and coachbuilt models like the new Batur.

In the world of automotive design, few names resonate as profoundly as the late Marcello Gandini. His recent passing leaves a void in the car community, but it drives us to honor an exceptional legacy. A trailblazer whose creations rewrote the rules of automotive design and functionality, Gandini emerged in the swingin’ 1960s, a time ripe for innovation. His designs dared to blend sleek, avant-garde styles with functional breakthroughs that redefined what cars could be. Wielding a rare combination of artistic vision and engineering expertise, he established a new gold standard in design.

Consider the now-collector-grade Lamborghini Miura. Gandini’s work on this Lamborghini masterpiece introduced the midengine layout to the rest of the world, wrapping it in a wedge-shaped body that remains timeless. Then came the Countach, which turned the supercar concept up to 11 with its futuristic silhouette and scissor doors, elements now synonymous with Lamborghini’s identity. However, Gandini’s influence extended beyond the bulls of Lamborghini. TRACK TO ROAD

A proving ground for performance cars, the racetrack compels innovation in the worlds of motorsport and everyday drivers.

The racetrack is (obviously) where automotive performance unbridles. In fact, performance is the sole focus on the track, with teams battling to dominate the circuit and win.As a result, engineers and designers must push just as hard as the cars and drivers themselves, with the goal of surpassing the boundaries of what’s possible to make cars faster and better than ever before.

What makes this exciting for the entire automotive world is that those very technologies and innovations are brought from the racetrack to the road, making roadgoing cars faster and better, whether for track days and hot laps or everyday driving.

This isn’t new. In 1953, Jaguar won the 24 Hours of Le Mans using C-type cars that were early adopters of disc brakes, and they were the first cars to implement them in the history of the legendary and prestigious endurance challenge. However, more than 70 years later, the racetrack has brought even more exciting technology to performance cars from all over the world.

A prominent example: The massive swan-neck wing featured on the current 992-generation Porsche 911 GT3 RS evolves the swan-neck wing seen on the GT3, which

itself is derived from racing, being mounted from the top, unlike typical wings that mount on the bottom.

The flat bottom surface optimizes downforce and aerodynamics, but the GT3 RS takes it a step further. Derived from the most ambitious and premier race cars, the wing features an active portion, which functions as a Drag Reduction System, bringing the car to even higher speeds when straight-line driving under full load. The system can function automatically or with the push of a button on the steering wheel. In addition, the active portion of the wing functions as an airbrake, assisting the brakes to slow the car down safely and e ciently.

Another example comes from Mercedes-AMG, and it’s derived from the celebrated and highly successful MercedesAMG Petronas F1 team. Developed in collaboration with Garrett Motion, the Mercedes-AMG electric exhaust gas turbocharger resolves the issue of turbo lag by using a small electric motor to drive the compressor wheel, improving turbo response throughout the RPM range but especially from idling, resulting in improved performance for a range of new AMG models.

Although it unfortunately isn’t street legal in the United States, the incredible Mercedes-AMG ONE packs racing technology and prowess from bumper to bumper, evoking the amazement of incredible homologation specials of the past. Its own DRS function, among many other technologies that come straight from the intensity and rivalry of the racetrack, was an integral part of what helped it secure the road-legal production car lap record on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.

In all manner of performance machines, the racetrack remains the test bed for some of the most intriguing and game-changing developments that not only make cars faster but better all around. Even as the automotive world transforms towards the future, motorsport isn’t just aspirational, but inspirational when it comes to performancefocused innovation.

M PAPAYA POWER

McLaren has been on the hunt for consistency and points for quite a few seasons, shifting drivers and improving their car as best they can. Unfortunately, the results have been mixed with their most recent top three finish in the Constructors Standings occurring in 2020 and most recent first place finish dating back all the way to 1998 when David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen were the team’s drivers.

Thankfully, for the team in papaya, the 2023 season is shaping up nicely. After this writing, McLaren is sitting in third place with 96 points. What’s more, Lando Norris is in fifth place after a second-place finish at the Chinese Grand Prix, and Oscar Piastri in right behind in sixth.

If that’s not enough, McLaren has also announced that their first upgrade package for the year will arrive in time for the Miami Grand Prix. If the package is substantial enough and provides the extra performance that’s needed, the Tifosi might have to start worrying about more than just trying to compete with Red Bull. •••

2. Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli / Panerai

O cine Panerai, a Swiss watch brand with Italian roots, has been involved in ocean activities for decades. Its journey with the America’s Cup started in 2017 when it became the o cial partner of two teams. But in 2019, it became the o cial sponsor of Luna Rossa Prada Pirelli. Now, Panerai unveils the Submersible QuarantaQuattro Luna Rossa Ti-Ceramitech PAM 01466. Made of a high-tech, high-performance material, the 44-millimeter watch is designed to go the distance. The process for creating this new material took seven years, and Panerai has a patent pending. The plasma electrolytic oxidation of the material achieves distinctive hues of blue and transforms the titanium alloy to a stronger, more rugged and yet lightweight case. The watch is powered by the brand’s automatic P.900 caliber with an Incabloc anti-shock device, three days of power reserve, and 500 meters of water resistance. The watch retails for $16,600.

3. Alinghi Red Bull Racing / Tudor Tudor, with underwater roots dating back to its dive watches of the mid-20th century, is now teaming with Alinghi Red Bull Racing. The brand began its long-term partnership with Alinghi Red Bull Racing in 2022, its first foray into competitive yacht racing. To honor that, Tudor unveils the Pelagos FXD Alinghi Red Bull Racing Edition watches in high-tech stainless steel, titanium, and carbon-composite materials. Shown here, the black matte ceramic-cased Chronograph version is water resistant to 200 meters. It is powered by the brand’s mechanical movement, a COSC-certified chronometer. The bezel, with SuperLumiNova markings is designed to count down to the beginning of the race. The watch is finished with fixed strap bars initially designed for the French Navy combat divers. The blue-and-red color scheme is inspired by the sails of the Red Bull Racing team. Get it for $5,275.

Legendary race car driver Jacky Ickx joined us for a one-on-one interview to discuss his successes and his 36-year involvement in the watch industry — all the while with Chopard.

Jacky Ickx, a name synonymous with speed, precision, and an undying passion for motorsport, has forged a legendary partnership with Swiss brand Chopard over three decades. The team recently unveiled their seventh joint venture — the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7, a tribute to the illustrious career of the famed driver.

Ickx, who met and started collaborating with Chopard co-founder Karl-Friedrich Scheufele in 1988, is one of the watch industry’s longest-standing band ambassadors with a single company.

“We met 36 years ago, and our shared passions for motorsports and precision brought us together,” Ickx says. “We have passed the boundaries of a normal business relationship. I became a member of the family, in a way, and today I even accompany KFS on some of the Mille

Miglia races. Not as a driver but as the passenger.”

The 79-year-old has a long and storied career that dates back to 1966 and includes six wins of the 24 Hours of Le Mans, eight wins and 25 podium finishes in Formula 1, a Can-Am Challenge Cup Championship, a Paris-Dakar Rally victory, and much more. In fact, Ickx is one of only a handful of trailblazers who have competed across many types of competitions, from Formula 1 to endurance racing, behind the wheel of a variety of machines.

The new Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7 timepiece, with lines inspired by classic automobiles, reflects many of Ickx’s successes. The 40.5-millimeter round watch boasts a dark midnight blue dial that recalls the helmet Ickx commissioned early on in his career that became his signature. Initially, the patented helmet was in bright blue, but it transitioned in 1972 to midnight. Additionally, the date aperture on the chronograph, between 4 and 5 o’clock on the dial, showcases the date in white, save for the numbers 6 and 24, which are red. Those numbers refer to Ickx’s six victories in the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

A real treat comes with the case back that features a new element co-designed by Ickx and Scheufele: the Owl Helmet (Le Casque Hibou). Requested by Ickx in 1969, the helmet features two apertures, enhanced with white outlines, that were

protected by a visor. The look recalls the eyes of an owl. In fact, Ickx was the first to wear a full-face helmet — admitting that he did not have faith in the safety of the helmets of the era.

Two versions of the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7 are being made, both of which underscore Chopard’s commitment to sustainability: 50 pieces of the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph JX7 in Lucent Steel (made with 80 percent recycled steel) with an 18-karat ethical yellow gold bezel. It retails for $12,100. Another 250 pieces will be made in Lucent Steel and will be priced at $10,300.

Both watches are powered by a COSCcertified housemade mechanical selfwinding movement with 54 hours of power reserve and finished with a rubber strap with a Dunlop tire pattern from the 1960s, now for the first time in midnight blue.

Ickx is fast to give credit to others — not only for his racing career, but also for the making of the newest watch in Chopard’s lineup.

“People call me a legend, but the reality is you are who you are because of those around you. You are never alone when you are successful; it is the large group of people behind you that bring you there,” Ickx says. “I think the new Chopard watch is successful, too, because behind the curtain there are many artists in many areas who do the job with expertise and with passion.”

So, does Ickx still drive the tracks? “I still drive, but the idea is not o ering the shadow of what I was 40 years ago. It is just a pleasure to drive a car and to see the fans on the other side, filled with passion for the sport.”

As for what’s next, Ickx was just named a brand partner for Hyundai/Kia for its Genesis luxury car. “I am back in action with cars, but I have turned the page so I can enjoy what remains of the future. When the shorter way is in front of you, time is so much more precious,” Ickx says, quipping, “so you have to look at your watch a lot.”
