ouise Del Basso, co-owner of Galleria Misto along with her husband Luigi, lights up when she talks about the artists who display their incredible work at the Belleair Bluffs gallery. Galleria Misto exhibits an exquisite and extensive collection of works by respected artists of regional and international acclaim with more than 600 pieces available for viewing online. “I look for originality, for something that pops off the walls,” Del Basso explains, detailing how she determines an artist is the right ﬁt for her space. “I like to soak in the painterly texture and to feel how powerful and substantial the work is.” Galleria Misto—with “misto” meaning “mixed” in Italian—showcases collections in a variety of styles, genres and mediums, including Traditional, Contemporary, Realism, Impressionism, Representational and Abstract works. The gallery has a fantastic mixture of landscape, seascape, ﬁgurative, abstract and still life works, implemented in oil, acrylic, bronze and various mixed media. “I’ve always loved art,” Del Basso gushes. “I studied art for many years, I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art, and I’ve sold a few of my own pieces here as well.” The busy wife and mother of three has kept a full schedule since taking over the gallery in August 2014. She has refurbished the space, hosted a grand opening in December and partnered with local businesses to raise money for local causes. In April 2015, Galleria Misto partnered with Ferrari of Tampa Bay and duPont REGISTRY for an event featuring 10 Ferrari vehicles and numerous artistic depictions of the Ferrari brand created by 12 local artists. The event raised $1,200 for The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation. “It was a wonderful collaboration, and it felt so good being able to raise money for such a good cause,” Del Basso said. What’s next for the gallery? Del Basso is starting to conceptualize a glamour-focused show, featuring all things fashion and style. Look for it to hit the gallery sometime during the September/October timeframe.

he secret is out. We love to look good and to take a good look at our neighbors. In response, everyone’s getting more plastic surgery—everywhere. In fact, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, there has been a 43 percent increase in plastic surgery procedures performed on men over the past five years. Dr. Deepak K. That combined with normal hormonal changes and a bad hand at genetics, has men opting for innovative surgeries to keep up with their peers.

“...men are worried about the same things as women, we just express it differently.” Men, Dr. Naidu says, store fat internally, near organs, so that when they do lose weight, they are left with loose skin and stretched muscles. Through abdominoplasty surgery the extra skin is removed and re-draped to expose and redevelop the abdomen’s contour so that the skin ﬁts like a glove. As a part of the procedure he also performs fascial plication, which tightens the abdominal muscles and core. It’s like an internal corset to better deﬁne the abdominal contour. Most of the men Dr. Naidu sees are young to middle aged. Where as older men opt for liposuction or aesthetic procedures, such as Botox®, younger men have different motivations. They are building up and going for proportions genetics have denied them. They are undergoing chest, bicep and calf augmentation.

The market for men was underserved, Dr. Naidu says. Once the door to the conversation is opened, men do great with plastic surgery. Their main concerns have to do with recovery times—when they can return to work and to the gym. Dr. Jamie Perez is a Board Certiﬁed Plastic Surgeon in Tampa who has performed thousands of Brazilian butt lifts. His technique though, does not involve using implants or any foreign objects. Instead, he’s perfected the art of harvesting one’s own fat cells to create an artifully contoured buttock.

“...to create a beautiful rear end, the doctor must think three dimensionally.” In this procedure, Dr. Perez uses advanced liposuction to take fat cells from the length of the outer trunk, along the ribs, and grafts these to the lower portion of the butt, sculpting the ﬂowering shape of a lovely rear end. Volume, he says, does not equate beauty. Instead, to create a beautiful rear end, the doctor must think three dimensionally: The fat is removed in such a way as to narrow and slim the waist. The transferred cells are then skillfully placed to develop the shape of the butt. It is a 3-D body sculpture. “The impact on the self esteem is huge,” he says. Dr. Perez traveled the world to learn these techniques. In 2001, at the time of his ﬁrst Brazilian butt lift, plastic surgeons in the United States were hesitant to use liposuction rather than implants. To build his knowledge, he studied under doctors in Brazil, Paris, Mexico and Latin America. By 2007, the American Academy of Plastic Surgeons recognized fat grafting for breast and butt enhancement. It took a while to catch up with the world, “But once we do something (in America), we do it the best.”

VAREKAI Tales of the Forest Hundreds of trees will sprout seemingly overnight to create a mysterious world inhabited by dozens of celebrated artists and acrobats when Cirque du Soleil’s critically acclaimed production of Varekai arrives at the Amalie Arena for a limited engagement August 5. The story unfolds deep within a forest where colorful creatures and characters have gathered to watch, and wait, for something, or someone. Among those keeping vigil within this otherworldly setting are the Limping Angel, the Skywatcher, the Volcano Leapers, the Goddesses and the Muse. A solitary young man suddenly appears, tumbling downward from above. He ﬁnds himself wounded in an unknown world but quickly discovers his desire to live is strong enough to overcome his injuries and enable him to embark on an extraordinary adventure.

WELCOME TO VAREKAI, TALES OF THE FOREST. Varekai is a word from the Romany language of the gypsies that means “wherever.” And, like its name, this signature show can take audiences wherever they are willing to go. Where Varekai exists is anyone’s guess. What happens there is for everyone to experience and enjoy. What audiences can count on is for this production to “pay tribute to the nomadic soul, to the spirit and art of the circus tradition and to the infinite passion of those whose quest takes them along a path that leads to Varekai.” Varekai previously visited the Tampa Bay area when it was performed under the Grand Chapiteau tent set up in downtown St. Petersburg in 2005. As is true of every Cirque du Soleil show, Varekai constantly changes while introducing new performers, embracing new acts and offering new insights into the tale inspired by Greek mythology, the story of Icarus who flew too close to the sun. That means this latest production will feature familiar elements along with exciting new additions. “The show is extremely different in many ways,” said Fabrice Lemire, artistic director of Varekai since 2012. “The concept is the same but, as artistic director, I try to redefine the clarity of the plot with the performers. The reason this show has survived 13 years on the road is because it evolves while protecting its integrity.” Lemire trained as a professional dancer in Paris where he was awarded First Prize for Male Dance from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. He performed for many years as a principal dancer and guest artist in various worldwide productions before joining Cirque du Soleil in 2008 as Dance Master and Assistant Artistic Director for the resident production ZAiA in Macau. In 2010, he transferred to Quidam while the show was touring South America under the Big Top and was quickly appointed Artistic Director for the show. He lead Quidam until the fall 2012 when he transferred to Varekai. “My role is to better assist the show to evolve to create a stronger experience for the audience and for the performers. It is so important to always challenge the performers, to allow them to evolve, expand and try something different. If I am content with them giving me status quo and copying and pasting their performance for the arena, then I am in the wrong field.” 72

n our mass-produced culture where inexpensive knock-offs are the norm, that type of quality work can be hard to ﬁnd. But two local artisans—David Calvin of David Calvin Furniture Studio in St. Petersburg and Markus Esop of Baltic Studios Custom Wood Creations in Tampa—display a level of creativity and skill that sets them apart.

Calvin’s slogan, “Where art and architecture meet,” is appropriate for his collection of exotic, colorful wood veneer tables, dressers, wall art, trays and mirror frames. These are decorative art showpieces that take full advantage of the color, texture and grain of the wood to create something unexpected. “I add a touch of color with veneer, not paint,” says Calvin, who won an award of distinction at this year’s Mainsail Art Show at the downtown St. Petersburg waterfront. His spectacular wood veneer inlay designs reﬂect his love of interesting patterns, from geometric designs to inspiration he gets

from old quilts. A collection of books on quilting line the bookshelf in his office. This is furniture you definitely won’t find in the store. “I love combining styles, adding pre-dyed veneer inlays and either redoing existing pieces or starting from scratch to make something completely new for the client,” says Calvin. Does he have a favorite wood veneer? “That’s like asking which are your favorite children,” he says. He has a hard time picking. But at the top of the list would be sapele, mahogany, walnut, ebony and zebrawood for their beautiful grain. Calvin also takes pride that his furniture is eco-friendly. Using veneer instead of solid wood is a more efficient use of rare and exotic woods, he says. Veneers are thin sheets of wood that are cut and applied to a substrate wood using extreme pressure to create a tight seal so it will never separate. The substrate can be recycled or reclaimed wood, or even plywood.

Markus Esop is the builder and Naomi Velez D’Esop is the designer. Together, the husband and wife team create one-of-a-kind pieces ranging from bookshelves, indoor and outdoor dining tables and entertainment units, to ﬁreplace mantels, breakfast nooks and kitchen cabinets. “We meet with the client and Naomi starts to sketch while we are there so we can get basic ideas on paper,” says Esop. “Then using computer-aided design, she lays out the room and puts the pieces in the room so the client can see how it looks before we begin.” Challenging pieces don’t intimidate him. A recent client wanted four large bookcases with a domed top, but the bookcases had to ﬁt

a specific space in the hallway. The final product was a huge success. “We’ve never done the same piece twice,” says Esop, who comes from a long line of Estonian woodworkers. He prefers to use reclaimed and salvaged wood rather than new growth and he uses wood slabs that are cut straight from the trunk of the tree, rather than something put through the mill. Pecky cypress, walnut, cherry, camphor and eucalyptus are among the many different types of wood that he uses. It all depends on what the client wants, he says. One of their most interesting projects? A large wine cellar in the Italian Alps for a client who flew Markus over for the six weeks it took to him to hand-craft the room.

hen TJ Miller decided to move back to his native Tampa roots after spending a year in D.C., he came back with a vision. “I loved the vibe of the restaurants up in D.C. with different floors creating different environments in one space,” explains Miller, Cask’s owner and operator. “I wanted to run my own restaurant and I knew Tampa needed something like this. And being from the south, I knew it needed some Southern cooking.” Thus, Cask Social Kitchen opened its 5,200-square feet of space in June 2015 off South Howard Avenue, serving up Southern-style cuisine under the direction of Executive Chef Jessica Wafford. Principal partners also include Professional Football Player Vincent Jackson and Restaurateur Adam Itzkowitz. The menu showcases showstopper comfort foods like Cask Crab ‘N Mac Cakes (one of Miller’s favorite dishes at the restaurant), Shrimp and Grits both Cask and NOLA style, and the Sweet Belgian Bird, Cask’s take on chicken and waffles made with a sweet potato waffle. Lighter options include the Bird & Berry, a salad topped with chicken and berries, and the Wafford Wagyu, a veggie burger made with quinoa. For dessert, try the SoHo S’mores with blueberry balsamic sauce drizzled over the top. Cask is also open for Sunday brunch, serving up some unique dishes like the Jalapeno Cornmeal Pancakes with Sriracha butter and Stuffed French Toast with pecan syrup, in addition to other delicious bites such as bourbon candied bacon, grilled banana bread with scratch-made peanut butter, and cheddar biscuits. Handcrafted cocktails and an extensive bourbon and whiskey menu, along with wine and local craft beer selections, make this a must-try in the area. Notable wines on the menu are the Vin EightyThree Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, named after one of the restaurant’s principal partners, Vincent Jackson. Indoors, the loft lounge provides a plush, speakeasy vibe with a full bar and seating for 50 people, including a private dining table for 12. “The response has been really good,” Miller boasts. “It has been surreal, especially since I was born and raised here. I’m getting texts and emails from so many people I know, and everyone is just really excited.” Cask is open Monday through Wednesday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; Thursday through Saturday from 11:30 a.m. to 1 a.m.; and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with an extra late night happy hour on Thursdays from 9 p.m. to midnight. While margaritas are a hot-weather staple, try something a little more surprising. Impress your guests with Ocean Prime’s Tequila Cocktail, made with homemade infused agave nectar. If you want to

spice up your summer, whip up Craft Street’s Mayan Reyes, a refreshing and well-balanced creation with the spiciness from the chili liquor and the soothing sweetness of the passion fruit. And if you really want to send your guests over the edge, try Ciro’s Fuego y Flores, which stands for “ﬁre and ﬂowers”— the perfect combination for summer!

TEQUILA COCKTAIL, Ocean Prime, Tampa 1 oz CORZO Silver 1 oz infused agave nectar (see recipe below) 1 oz lime juice, fresh squeezed .5 oz orange juice, fresh squeezed Pour all ingredients into mixing tin. Fill tin with ice. Shake well. Strain into highball glass that has spiced salt (equal parts cinnamon, sugar and kosher salt) on the rim and is ﬁlled with ice. Garnish with a lime wedge. Infused Agave Nectar 2 cups water 1 large cinnamon stick 1 large vanilla bean, split down the center 2 each star anise pods 1 each 1/2-inch piece of fresh ginger, diced 1 tsp kosher salt 2 cups light agave nectar In a medium saucepan, bring water to boil. Add the cinnamon stick, vanilla, star anise and ginger. Bring back to a boil and stir in salt. Add agave nectar and bring to a simmer, stirring frequently. Simmer for 15 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool. Cover and refrigerate overnight. Strain the syrup into a jar, cover and refrigerate for up to 3 weeks.

“Achieve with Us,” is a fitting new banner for The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation, the official new name of the former UPARC, an organization that has been meeting the needs of people with intellectual and development disabilities and their families for more than 50 years. “I have never been involved in an organization that is more rewarding,” says Polly Stannard, a board member of The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation. “How fortunate we are to live in a time when these individuals are cherished and there are so many opportunities for them to reach their fullest potential.” The Arc of Tampa Bay offers a broad range of services, from residential group homes for individuals who have behavior or functional issues to an apartment complex for those who can live on their own with some assistance. Additional services include sheltered workshops, employee development services, job coaching, and day treatment programs. Madison Orr Hauenstein was recently named Executive Director of The Arc Tampa Bay Foundation, which provides the philanthropic support to ensure that much-needed services are always available despite any shortfalls in funding from the State of Florida. “I hope to inspire others to dream big and believe that they can make a difference in the lives of the clients we serve,” says Hauenstein.
