dR EDITOR’S LETTER

Real Estate Issue Dear Reader, You are holding the fifth annual Real Estate issue of the duPont REGISTRY™ Tampa Bay. A lot has changed in the real estate market over the last five years. Prices have gone up and prices have gone down and they will go up again. On our cover is an incredible home in Avila. I am sure there is nothing else quite like it in the Tampa Bay area. The home is over 28,000 square feet, sits on over five acres, and the asking price is twenty-five million dollars. If it is something you might be interested in, give Mitzi Gill and Dina Sierra Smith of Smith & Associates a call. No matter what the price of real estate is, one thing has remained constant over the last five years—the Tampa Bay area is a great place to live and people will continue to want to live in one of the most livable cities in the United States. While Tampa Bay was basking under the national attention of the Super Bowl in early February, I realized how lucky we were to not only host the Super Bowl for the third time, in recent years, but our Tampa Bay Rays were in the World Series as well. How many cities can make the same claim? Not many. In addition to sports, Tampa Bay can claim three firstclass performance halls, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, and the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. It seems that every night something is going on in one of these great local venues. The friendly competition between the venues brings a constant stream of quality shows to our area. Don’t forget to check out our Events guide for the very latest in Tampa Bay happenings. Enjoy the next few months as these are some of the best months of the year in Tampa Bay.

dR AROUND THE BAY By Janan Talafer and Nicole Waters

Pampered Pooches Pamper your pooch at Best Buddies, a fun, new dog boutique and bakery in downtown St. Petersburg filled with everything you could possibly want for your four-legged best friend. The dog bakery offers delicious-looking, preservativefree, all-organic pastries and cookies, as well as little decorated chocolates, actually carob, a safe, nontoxic treat that dogs can enjoy. Check out the fake potty grass, the upscale dog carriages and the boxing gloves dog chew. There’s plenty of great clothing, too, like the bikini pictured to the right. Owner Alan Ronay says he’s the only shop in town carrying the Skooperbox, small biodegradable cartons made out of recycled paper—just scoop and toss. Look for Sunday brunch in the near future. 400 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg; 727-289-7156 or www.bestbuddiesboutique.com. JT

From Russia With Love Yelena Podolsky says it’s only fitting that an authentic Russian restaurant is now open in downtown St. Petersburg given the city’s history. The family-owned Yammy Mamma’s Food Kafe & Marketplace is a complete redo of the old Mansion by the Bay with a new modern green and yellow color scheme, beautiful wood floors, and highly polished wood tables. A traditional Russian menu offers Chicken Tabaka, Pelmeni, Lamb Kebob and more, as well as a variety of Russian wine and beer. Walk out the side door to the little market, which offers rows of everything Russian, from newspapers to rye bread, fresh sausage, dried fish, imported chocolates and china, as well as prepackaged frozen lamb dumplings and blintz. 145 4th Avenue NE, St. Petersburg; 727-388-1904. World of Art Some 7,000 works of art from around the world can be found at the Paintings of the World, downtown St. Petersburg’s newest art place on Beach Drive. Owned by Charles Keysock and managed by artist B.C. Woo, the gallery features more than 30 local artists, from Woo to Mark Levasseur and Cha Cha Despanza, as well as investment pieces, like the Peter Max, Salvador Dalí and Picasso prints. You’ll also find unique reverse oil-on-glass art from the Croatian Naïve Art Gallery, now housed at the Paintings of the World. On Saturdays, look for artists like Woo painting outside where you can watch. Future plans include a “spoken word” performance of poetry and stories on Friday evenings. 400 Beach Drive NE, St. Petersburg; 727-432-0204 or www.channelsideart.com. JT

Latin Flair Table Restaurant and Mesa Lounge adds a spicy South AmericanCaribbean-Atlantic Rim flair to the growing line-up of venues in downtown St. Petersburg. The restaurant hosted a grand reopening late last year, after tweaking the menu slightly and lowering prices, says general manager Joe Moledo. A favorite still on the menu is the amazing Wahoo Ceviche Cone—Florida Keys Wahoo blended with citrus vinaigrette in a blue corn tortilla cone. Come early for happy hour and stay for dinner. Inside, a chic, modern décor features low decorative lights, curving couches and intimate tables. Or, sit outside at the sidewalk cafe. Groups can book a private dining room, VIP living room or rooftop party space. 539 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg; 727-823-6372 or www.tablestpete.com. JT

Luxurious Lounging Bay area partygoers have found an exciting, new home in Aja, the ultra-modern club, which opened its doors in late January after months of anticipation. Located in the Towers of Channelside, the high-energy hot spot brings the infamous styles of New York, Chicago and Miami to Tampa’s Downtown. With more than 35 specialty martinis, 12,000 square feet of space and a sleek design featuring 27 individually sculptured acrylic pendant lights, patrons are raving. Cinderella’s Carriage For a romantic evening, nothing beats a ride in Cinderella’s Carriage through downtown St. Petersburg’s waterfront parks, especially with Duke, a gorgeous Belgium horse with green-glitter painted hoofs in the lead. Duke and Henry, a Clydesdale who pulls a more traditional carriage, are quite the sight waiting for customers almost every day of the week. And they’ll soon be joined by a third horse and buggy—a six-seater “limo,” says Leland Allenbrand of Surreys at the Pier. The carriages are popular for weddings, birthday parties, girls’ night out, romantic dates, and Christmas light tours of nearby neighborhoods. Because the carriages are licensed just like a gasoline-powered limo, alcohol and snacks are okay. The horses wear plastic horse shoes, like “flip flops” that absorb the shock as they stroll the streets. 6080 94th Avenue, Pinellas Park; 816-215-8613 or www.surreysontheplaza.org. Let Them Eat Little Cakes Which one would you choose? The Chocolate Elvis, a banana cupcake with peanut butter-butter cream icing, topped off with a dollop of chocolate fudge. Or Better Than…, a dense chocolate cake with rich cream cheese icing. Cupcakes are the hottest new trend across the country and now they’ve arrived in downtown St. Petersburg, thanks to Nicole and Doug Longo, who opened their shop, The Cupcake Spot, in January, building on the reputation of their other location in Palma Ceia. “They’re all family recipes or from friends,” says Doug, of the 16 different flavors they offer. The location is cool, too. The door to the shop is inside the entryway to the Snell Arcade, the historic, 1920-era building on Central Avenue. 405 Central Avenue, St. Petersburg; 727-825-0572 or www.thecupcakespotinc.com. hen 38-year-old Lisa Brown of St. Petersburg couldn’t keep up with her active 3-year-old daughter at the playground, or even bend over to tie her little one’s shoes, she knew it was time to shed the extra weight. But when a ruptured appendix landed her in the hospital for a week, it was the wakeup call she needed to make drastic changes for the better.

“I was tired of being fat, to be quite blunt,” the mother of three recalls. “There I was, overweight and lying in the hospital. I knew the weight had to come off. I wanted to be the healthiest I could be.” More than 100 pounds overweight, Brown was at risk for serious medical conditions associated with obesity, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer, arthritis, gallbladder disease,

In Florida alone, medical expenditures related to obesity total more than $3.9 billion, according to the Florida Department of Health. arithmetic: burn off equal or more calories than consumed and you’ll maintain or lose weight. But it’s easier said than done. Brown had tried diets in the past, but with little success. Determined to shed the weight and improve her health, she enrolled at a medically supervised weight loss center. There are numerous physician-supervised centers in the Tampa Bay area that promise success where other programs fail. But are the claims true? Thousands of patients have enrolled at the Dr. Cesar A. Lara Center for Weight Management since it opened in 2002. About half of all new patients are 50 pounds overweight and already have a weight-related medical condition, such as diabetes or high cholesterol. “The other 50 percent are in a risk category but not necessarily affected yet,” says Lara, a board-certified family physician. “They are beginning to feel some of the consequences of having forgotten about

themselves. They have to be the mother, the worker, the wife. They have very little time to take care of themselves.” Whether they need to lose 15 pounds or 200, most of his patients—women and men—have tried other diets but failed, says Lara. “I am helping change people’s lives, and more importantly, putting them in the driver’s seat of their own lives,” he notes. The approach to weight loss at many medical weight loss centers includes a thorough medical examination, individualized diet and exercise plans, and individual and group support. FDA-approved appetite suppressants can be prescribed and their use monitored by a physician. Some centers offer vitamin and mineral supplements, including weekly Vitamin B injections. Support, encouragement, and accountability are important components of the program at Success by Design, a weightloss center supervised by Debra

Success by Design’s Sherri Morrison, RN and Dr. Debra Figueroa

Figueroa, M.D., in Pinellas Park. Patients receive weekly individual counseling with a medical professional. “My patients tell me they feel like they’re visiting family. They aren’t going to be beaten up. They are not going to be criticized,” says Figueroa, a board-certified family physician. Medical experts agree that a twopound weight loss per week is healthy, although many patients often lose more initially. That’s what happened with Lisa Brown, who eventually lost nearly 100 pounds in seven months under Figueroa’s care. “I lost 12 pounds the first week. That gives you that high and that mental energy. You feel like you can do it,” recalls Brown. “I’m very excited and proud of myself. I’m a whole different person.” Janet Thompson of St. Petersburg felt the same way after losing 40 pounds at a weight loss center. “I had tried every diet under the sun, but I always failed. Having the support and knowing that I would be weighed every week kept me motivated,” she recalls. The busy professional and mother of two kept the weight off for six months after completing the program, but began gaining weight after holiday and stress-related binge eating, she admits. “I gave away all my size 16 clothes when I lost the weight, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to replace them. I know how to lose the weight. I just have to do it.” Lara’s program incorporates a transition phase to help reinforce healthy eating and exercise habits patients have maintained during the weight-loss portion of the program. Most patients who complete the transition have maintained their desired weight for at least six months, he reports. “The majority of people who tend to fail look at it as ‘I have to get there and then I’m done’. But it’s a lifelong journey. It’s a lifestyle change,” he explains. “It’s like anything in life—it’s something you need to continue. Most people who have gained weight do so because they aren’t taking care of themselves.” dR

our front door really sets the tone for the rest of the house. The more attractive the front entrance, the more it can add to the perceived market value of a house. There is nothing worse than seeing a Victorian style door on a more contemporary home. “No one wants to have the same door as their neighbors,” declares Cal Reynolds of Art Glass Studios in Clearwater. “They are looking for unique designs.” Many door manufacturers offer an extraordinary number of custom choices, so you can select a style that appeals to you and still modify it to complement the exterior of your home. Doors are available up to 10 feet high, 4 feet wide and 3 inches thick with a variety of side light panels or transom or round tops. Decorative glass panels let in natural light and allow for a view. With your architect or designer’s counsel, you can literally create whatever suits your home. Expect to start at $4,000 without side lights and transoms and head up over $12,000 and a lot more as you add special design features.

Security is An Issue

In these uncertain times, more attention is being paid to safety measures. Wrought iron decorative features are having a comeback with exterior grilles and wrought iron screens and huge escutcheon plates. The added benefit is they help protect even-tempered impact glass. With full light glass doors, also plan to have a double-keyed deadbolt lock or a multi-point locking system installed. Hurricane-proof glass is yet another option as are glass that limits UV rays or reduces heat loss. The State of Florida mandates tempered impact glass in their Building Codes for new houses, and with more persistent hurricanes and storms, this is a necessity for your family’s well being. This laminated glass offers greater security against forced entry as well. Be sure to check that this is part of your new door. dR

Every 8 seconds, a residential burglary is committed in the U.S., and most of us think our houses are invulnerable. How secure is your home?

T

hefts at home are crimes of opportun-ity. A door left unlocked, an open garage door or window, or even a dark house are all indicators that a house is vulner-able. “The sinking economy usually means that crime rate goes up,” says Richard Chace of the Security Industry Association. “To reduce the risk of break-ins, the latest generation of home security systems offers homeowners peace of mind.”

Safe House Today’s technologically-advanced home security system offers full services beyond potential break-ins. Kurt Sonnenberg, Director for ADT Custom Home Services in Florida, notes “a fully-protected luxury home is three times less likely to be burglarized.” Many of his customers, who are multiple homeowners, prefer to use one dedicated security system to integrate their homes with just one code. Select a reputable home security company offering a central monitoring system available 24 hours a day and 365 days a year. The system should be easy to use and equally easy to monitor, no matter where you are. Some offer alerts to your PDA and /or your computer. Also essential is that the system has a backup battery unit in event of power failure, so important during the stormy season. 46 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Central to any good alarm system is an intelligent keypad. It should have graphic interface which can arm and dearm your system but also can control lights inside and out, receive voice mails, access internet and become a speaker phone. These keypads can do it all, except serve you coffee in bed. If your home has been remodeled or your system is over 10 years old, then you should have it re-evaluated and updated, suggests Bob Carroll, Florida Regional Director for Brink’s Home Security. The size and layout of your house and property should be taken into consideration in the design of any system.

The hottest new features are hidden camera surveillance for indoor and outdoor use. The advent of wireless models enables you to place the camera wherever you wish. A permanent security camera should have varifocal lenses (to zoom in and out), auto iris (adjusts for changing light conditions), and an infrared illuminator (capture good pictures in complete darkness). Timeless Manor Home in Tampa Bay

By Elizabeth McCann c Photography by Harvey v Smith S

W

hat’s trendy in luxury homes today are features that all buyers of a certain demographic clamor for. You know, the master suites with spalike baths, gourmet kitchens, great rooms, lavish finishes, to name a few. Beyond the prerequisite laundry list of luxuries is the trifecta of great architecture, proper siting, and a desirable location that makes a luxury home a great property. One such property that delivers on all points is a 28,893-square-foot home, built in 2004 and set on 5.9 acres in Tampa’s Avila, a private gated community. Currently, it happens to be the area’s priciest at $25 million and the largest singlefamily home on the market, according to

listing agents Mitzi Gill and Dina Sierra Smith of Smith & Associates in Tampa. “We feel like the house justifies the price,” says Gill. Indeed, 21st-century Florida meets 17th-century England in this elegant country manor home, designed by British architect Peter Shaw, of Architects Co-Partnership in Sarasota. It offers a way of life that has been coveted for centuries, says Shaw. The style, featuring steep gables, bay windows, and colonnades, was the height of fashion when King James I reigned, Shakespeare wrote King Lear, Galileo stargazed, and the first colonists settled in Massachusetts and Virginia. Shaw’s inspiration was the Jacobean country manors found in the Cotswolds region of England. “I’ve been around this style of architecture my whole life,” he says. The amazing amount of detail and sheer grace speak of his cohesive view for the www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay 51

property’s architecture, interior, and grounds. Like the Cotswold manor homes, this one is also clad in stone, though here it’s vein-cut Romanian marble rather than English limestone. The vein-cut marble also extends to the terraces, the garage, the cabana, the pool deck, and the foyer. Fit for a large family that entertains grandly, among its features is a great hall with a minstrel gallery, rooms that open to terraces, guest and staff quarters, a pool area, and a marble athletics court. Perhaps most lavish are the customdesigned Murano glass chandeliers, the antique English fireplace mantles, and the Austrian crystal chandeliers that grace the second-floor master suite and one other bedroom. The great hall alone is approximately 3,000 square feet, large enough to serve as a ballroom when all the furniture has been removed. It’s a room that has held 400 people for a political fundraiser. Also, parties with 400 guests have been held outdoors, around the pool. And most rooms have French doors to access the balustraded marble terraces that wrap around the entire house. No doubt about it, the house is huge, but the architect favored having spacious rooms rather than numerous ones.

52 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

Materials were selected to harmonize throughout, so the rooms are familiar and inviting. For example, the marble staircases, columns, and fireplace mantles are from the same Romanian quarry as the exterior cladding and floors, and the marble’s tones are picked up in the home’s baths and granite countertops. Colonnades, paneling, ornate ceilings, and dentil molding as well as fourteen fireplaces add intimacy to the home and its generously proportioned rooms. The ten bedrooms offer privacy and views of the parklike grounds, which flank Avila’s golf course, recently redesigned by Jack Nicklaus. “The golf course makes the property feel much bigger than it is,” observes Gill. A colonnade walkway connects the main house with the four-car garage with guest quarters above. The estate also offers an Italianate cabana with his-andher baths and a sizable outdoor kitchen to serve the pool and spa area. “Typically lords of English manors had little follies,” says Shaw. “I wanted to introduce something Tuscan to the property.” This estate is offered at $25 million and is listed by Mitzi Gill and Dina Sierra Smith of Smith & Associates in Tampa, 813-3344989 or www.yourluxuryteam.com. dR

amazing cross views of the golf course , and the Tuscan-inspired courtyard." And the finishes are well beyond today's building standards,” says Wazio. Directed by General Contractor, Scott Pavlik, who devoted vast time, energy, and pain-staking attention to detail, the home was finished in 2006. "What separates this home from other newer homes in the area is the ‘self-contained’ nature of this property," says Grindley. There is very little exterior

maintenance needed, and the structural integrity is evident. Grindley and his wife, Bernadette, built the home to their specifications using the finest granites, tiles, and marbles along with professional series, commercial grade appliances available to them. There is a non-repetitive characteristic throughout the home with elegant, contrasting color palettes for the flooring, cabinetry, and built-ins. "What I'll miss most is the scale and

scope of the rooms and the immediate proximity to Belleair Country Club where I play tennis several times a week," says Bernadette Grindley. I'm rather fond of this home. This property is offered at $1,850,000 and is listed by Rafal Wazio of Sand Key Realty Sales & Rentals, Inc., 727-424-4629 or rafalwazio@yahoo.com. dR

Beachfront Luxury Lux ry

I

By Janan Talafer magine it’s January and freezing up north. You’ve invited friends from home to visit your beachfront resort home, where the view out your living room window is an endless stretch of white powdery sand and turquoise water. And after sunset, you can retire from the tropical scenery by sinking into the leather swivel media chairs, around the 50-inch flat screen TV and enjoy the electric fireplace. This is a house that offers the best of both worlds—a relaxing hideaway or the perfect place for entertaining friends and family. Word is that Miley Cyrus spent many of her childhood vacation days at this very home. The current owners completed renovating this Sunset Beach waterfront home in 2007. The main living area, with two large balconies overlooking the gulf, invites you in with the warm earth tone colors, highly polished travertine tile floor, tiered ceiling and white crown molding, giving the home an elegant but comfortable feel. The living room and dining room flow into each other, so this spacious area seems even larger. Top-of-the-line insulated windows and doors exceed code for impact resistance, but what I noticed most was the total silence. The windows are a complete barrier to any sound filtering in from outside, a welcome retreat after a hard day. Hunter Douglas shades and plantation shutters provide privacy. A custom kitchen is just off the dining room and features

hardwood cabinets, granite countertops, decorative lighting, and state-of-the-art Electrolux appliances. Best of all, a window over the sink gives you a direct ocean view. On the opposite end from the kitchen, you’ll find the family room / billiard room, “A great place for the guys”, says Realtor Paula Pierce. There’s a large pool table, bar and a 42-inch flat screen TV. Shoot some pool, watch the game, or step outside onto the balcony to enjoy the view and your favorite cigar. While travertine is the flooring of choice in the kitchen, living and dining room, bamboo is found in the billiard room and on the third floor, where three bedrooms and the laundry room are located. Bamboo is popular for its durability and attractive wood grain, but also because it’s considered “green.” Upstairs, the master bedroom feels like a private suite with its own fireplace, 42-inch flat screen TV, surround sound, and beverage bar. Wake up in the morning to panoramic views of the gulf. Grab a cup of coffee and step out onto your private balcony to take in the sea air. The backyard is planted with mature palm, cypress and pine trees, which provide privacy, but also allow for breathtaking views. A California-style walk-in closet gives plenty of space for both his and her clothing, while the master bath has a double vanity with granite countertop, a whirlpool tub and separate shower. Lay back and soak in the tub while watching the overhead flat screen. or take in the sunset gulf view, from the large private picture window. The guest bedrooms are designed with a beach cottage feel, complete with Tommy Bahama furnishings, making your guests feel they are in a tropical resort. Few beach houses have much backyard, but this home is unique in that the outdoor patio is surrounded by a manicured lawn and a wide gulf front of sand and natural sea oats. Easy maintenance, with a sprinkler system, that can be regu-

lated while you are away. A path leads directly to the beach, with the water just steps away. You can shower off before coming inside and put away your beach toys, in the good-sized storage closet on the first floor cabana room. This room is big enough for casual dining; it has a half bath, media area, and a bar that includes a beer tap. No need to go thirsty on a hot day or night. The home features the latest electronic sound, video and lighting package, with programming from every room or

even from your office PC. The security system is monitored 24 hours and complete with exterior cameras. An outdoor stairwell and interior elevator provide you easy access to all floors. The home is in a great location, with popular places like the historical Don CeSar and John’s Pass just minutes away. Visit the Virtual Tour at www.8708gulf .com. It is offered fully furnished at $2.7 million and listed by Paula Pierce of The Toni Everett Company, 727-599-3111 or e-mail info@BeachLuxury.net. dR

Exquisite in the Details

By Janan Talafer

T

his three-story, luxury waterfront estate in the Kipps Colony section of Pasadena Yacht Club is like a commissioned work of art – well-planned, well-executed and impeccable down to the last detail. “This is truly a home for someone who is very discriminating and can appreciate all the time and attention that went into making sure everything was done to perfection,” says Realtor Dania Perry. The four-bedroom custom home features superb craftsmanship. Spectacular seven-layer Venetian plaster covers many of the interior walls. Rich mahogany, Italian travertine marble, cypress ceilings and soaring 30-foot ceilings give the home an elegant European feel throughout. A spacious open design allows the main living areas to flow into one another, while numerous large decorative arched windows let in plenty of light. Even the closets, the elevator, storage areas, laundry room, and three garages have the same finished look as the rest of the home And what a view. From nearly every area of the home, you can take in dramatic waterfront scenery, catch a glimpse of boats leaving the Pasadena Yacht Club, and watch beautiful sunsets. Mature royal palms line the property’s two-and-one-half miles of open water on Boca Ciega Bay. A unique aspect of the home is the sophisticated technology, says Perry.

Everything imaginable is automated, including the lighting, window shades, music, air conditioning and heat, all of which can be controlled individually, room by room, depending on the time of day, the homeowner’s mood and the activity. The large well-appointed kitchen is a chef’s dream, not surprising since the previous owner was a gourmet cook. This is a kitchen with dozens of extras— a warming drawer across from the extra large Wolf gas range, a refrigerated SubZero drawer (perfect for soda or bottled water), a built-in coffeemaker, two topof-the-line Miele Incognito dishwashers, three sinks, two built-in trash containers, a wine cooler and an ice maker. The limestone-tile hood over the stove is an eyecatching centerpiece of the kitchen. In the living room, beautifully finished floor-to-ceiling mahogany display cases with cypress inserts were designed to hold the previous owner’s art collection. The cases, along with a large flat screen TV, line one wall of the formal living room. Even the bathrooms have an abundance of style. Highly polished smooth dark leather tiles decorate the walls of the main guest bathroom on the first floor. Large pieces of travertine marble encase the deep tub in the master bath, perfect for soaking while you watch TV. Custom cabinets can be found throughout.

Downstairs on the ground level, you’ll find an entertainment area worthy of a four-star resort. An enormous recreation room with wall-to-wall sliding glass doors opens on to an impressive covered outdoor living area. Everything you could possibly need is here: fireplace, flat screen TV, outdoor shower, an outdoor kitchen and granite bar, plus a commercial-grade grill. The previous owners once held a party for 300 with a live band and plenty of room to spare. The pool area with its 175-feet of seawall is a tribute to Florida’s tropical lifestyle. A Jacuzzi offers eight individually controlled jets so guests can select just the right pressure to soothe tired muscles. Follow the travertine tile right up to the edge of the dock, which has two boat lifts, one capable of handling a 60-foot, 30-ton yacht. Did we mention that one of the rooms downstairs is customized for anglers and their prize-winning catch? The home is offered at $5,795,000 and is listed by Dania Perry of Century 21, 727-3673795 or www.tampabaywaterfront.net. dR

chicken or pork—starts with lilikoi, a Hawaiian passion fruit. Yamaguchi described the process he goes through in coming up with new recipes, this one in particular. “When I conceive a dish, I always come up with it mentally,” he explained. “I never just start cooking. I can picture a dish, and I can picture a taste. “So I say to myself, ‘OK, I want to do a tuna dish. I want to keep it rare and serve a salsa on the side. What kind of salsa do I want? Maybe passion fruit. It’s perfumey and sour in its fresh state. So what do I do to it? Let’s try and add palm sugar—it’s nice and creamy. But I don’t want the dish really sweet, so how do I cut it? How about Tabasco? It brings a little heat and it’s a little vinegary. It complements the sourness, and the sweetness of the sugar.’ “But that alone doesn’t have the body. So I add onions and green onions and then chip some cilantro in there for herb flavor. You get some roundness from the onions, and mixed with the passion fruit and Tabasco, it all sort of meets in the middle.” Ah, if it were only that easy for the rest of us. Yamaguchi said the Seared Ahi with Lilikoi-Shrimp Salsa tasted good on the first try, but he discovered something that will aid home chefs. “I found the salsa tasted better about an hour after I made it,” he said. “The juices from the onions seeped into the passion fruit, and the flavor of the [sautéed] shrimp seeped into the salsa. “If you let it sit too long, though, the shrimp starts to get overcooked from the acid, the cilantro gets too overwhelming. There’s a point in time where it all comes together, but it starts to fall apart after that.”

1/4 cup minced Maui or other sweet white onion 1 large Roma tomato, peeled, seeded, and finely diced 2 tablespoon finely diced scallion (including green parts) 1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 ounces Ahi Tuna in 3-ounce blocks To prepare: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the passion fruit with a spoon and press it through a fine-mesh sieve. Reserve the juice (about 1 tablespoon) and discard the seeds and pulp. Put the shrimp in a small bowl and toss with the olive oil to coat. Set a dry stainless-steel sauté pan over high heat and, when hot, add the shrimp. Sear, turning often until evenly pink, about one minute. Transfer to a non-reactive bowl and add the reserved passion fruit juice, onion, tomato, scallion, cilantro, Tabasco

sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss well to combine. Cover and refrigerate. Put the ahi on a plate, coat with peanut oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set a dry cast-iron skillet over high heat for 2-3 minutes and, when hot, sear the ahi for about 30 seconds on each side for rare, or about 1-1/2 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Transfer the ahi to serving plates and spoon salsa over the tuna, letting the juices from the salsa run onto the plates. Serves 4 as a main course Reprinted with permission from Roy’s Fish & Seafood: Recipes from the Pacific Rim by Roy Yamaguchi, ©2005. Published by Ten Speed Press.

MYSTIC FISH 3253 Tampa Road, Palm Harbor. 727-771-1800 or www.3bestchefs.com/mystic You’re lucky if you live in north Pinellas and can come often. No matter how far you have to drive to get to Mystic Fish, though, it’s worth the trip. Co-owner and chef Doug Bebell knows his fish and you’ll find seafood standards, like Maine lobsters, yellowfin tuna, and salmon cooked traditionally and with invention on the menu. For example, blackened Chilean sea bass is seasoned with ginger, soy, and seaweed, and the rare tuna gets Thai garlic-chili sauce and Japanese spices. Despite its name, Mystic Fish has a reputation among meat lovers, too. The steaks are hormone free, thankfully, and the New Zealand rack of lamb in a Guinness demi-glace has a following. The special menu dishes are truly special. Dinner only: Seven days a week.

dR WINE

Tastings

Sprin g

By Jeffrey DiMaio, CSW

If you view holiday feasts the way that I do, you know that they’re a great opportunity to serve some great wine. So, how limited are your choices if you’re serving either of the two traditional staples? Well, the news is good, because both foods are wonderful for showing wines.

L

et’s face it—hams are salty and, not to mention, fatty. While this may sound like a handicap, these are two qualities that work beautifully with certain wines. What we need is a wine with good acidity to cut through the fat. Another beverage trait that mitigates salt and fat is carbonation. This leads us easily to champagne or sparkling wines, which tend to be also high in acidity. Champagne is also a natural special occasion wine, so here’s the perfect excuse to pop the cork! Surely you’ve heard of “red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat.” These antiquated guidelines have become blurred in the modern age of wine and food pairing, but it’s time to introduce a new corollary to this old theory: Pink wine with pink meat! It may sound laughable, but when you start putting it to use, you’ll find that it truly works. Pink meat means salmon, carpaccio and, of course, ham. I can almost guarantee that any preparation of these foods with a good rosé will result in a

76 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

brilliant match. The reason is not because both the meat and the wine are pink. Perhaps coincidentally, each of these foods has properties that are complemented by all the best qualities in the rosé. With the ham, the sweetness of the glaze often matches the light berry fruit flavors in the wine. The spices that may be in the ham also complement these same flavors. Also, the crispness of the wine cuts through the salt-iness and fat in the meat. Of course, we can’t forget how well sparkling wine works, so why not go for some rosé bubbly? Lamb can be one of the most flavorful and intense meats you choose to serve. The important point to remember when pairing wine with lamb is the impact of the wine should match the impact of the dish. Basically, this means you have a perfect excuse to serve big reds. When we say “Big Reds” we mean those with a lot of body and tannin structure like top-notch Bordeaux or Rhone wines, well-structured American Cabernets, inky Australian Shiraz, Italian

Brunello di Montalcino, and other vinous powerhouses. You see, lamb’s gamy flavors can easily overwhelm more delicate wines like Burgundy, American Merlot and Pinot Noir. Bordeaux and lamb is perhaps the most classic pairing. In left-bank Bordeaux, Cabernet is the main component, and its full body matches the full flavor of the dish, while its ample tannins scrub the fattiness from the palette after each sip. However, we don’t need to limit ourselves to Bordeaux; we can use a fullbodied Cabernet from anywhere in the world to achieve a similar effect. One of my favorites is Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernets from this area have a terrific grace to balance all that power. Some even have an herbal eucalyptus quality that goes perfectly with the traditional mint jelly or other minty accoutrements that might be used to dress the lamb. For an excellent non-traditional pairing, look no further than a good Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello is made from

Sangiovese like many other Italian reds. The Brunello is a specific clone of the grape (Sangiovese Grosso) that yields a much more full-bodied and tannic wine than other types of Sangiovese,

giving it the ability to stand up to intense red meat dishes with gamy flavors. Truly Italian in style, Brunello can convey a mouth-watering liveliness on the palate that other wine styles cannot, bringing

out all the savory essence and flavors in the meal. dR Jeffrey DiMaio currently manages the wine, and beer department for Mazzaro’s Italian Market in St. Petersurg, FL.

Chateau Ste. Michelle “Indian Wells” Cabernet Sauvignon, Columbia Valley 2005 $17.99. In my opinion, this is one of the greatest values in cabernet sauvignon – period! Full-bodied, perfectly balanced, with notes of cassis, mocha, plum, and a hint of eucalyptus. It’s well-structured, yet supremely drinkable.

Antinori Brunello di Montalcino “Pian delle Vigne” 2003 $68.99. A modern-style, full-bodied blockbuster of a wine with sweet, ripe blackberry flavors and hints of tobacco and vanilla. Young, but very approachable with its soft tannins, this is a high wow-factor wine that shows again how Antinori made such a name for themselves. www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay 77

Jasper Johns Prints: Things the Mind Already Knows

Through May 30

If this exhibit had a sound track it would be jazz. The collaborative and easily manipulated printmaking process inspired Jasper Johns to playfully riff on familiar objects, such as letters, numbers, targets, and American flags, as well as experiment with themes from his famous paintings. And like jazz, this exhibit, organized by the Beth Ann Morean Arts Center, is modern and cool. And fun. If you missed the exhibit of Johns’s works on paper at the Met in New York City that ended in February, you can see a selection of prints produced over forty years by the iconic pop artist, culled from the John and Maxine Belger Foundation’s collection, right in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. Altar Boyz

April 17–May 10

It’s time to pack a picnic spread and head to Demens Landing again for American Stage in the Park. This year’s play, Altar Boyz, an offBroadway rock musical, should be a winner with families, even reluctant teens who’d prefer to be texting their friends. The musical comedy centers on a small-town Christian boy band that is performing its first big-time show in New York. Staged as a concert, it’s heavy on the song and dance, with five “heavenly” young men that prance and dance and parody the likes of ’N Sync and the Backstreet Boys. Romeo and Juliet

May 7–16

This Elizabethan classic, interpreted by director Bob Devin Jones, starts at the Capulet ball, rather than the street brawl because, Jones says, that’s what the audience is waiting for. Indeed, it’s the scene where Romeo meets Juliet, setting in motion the tragedy’s arc. The script manipulations are faithful to Shakespeare’s original play, he says, and should suit modern attention spans and aesthetics. With simple staging and modern costuming, the play about the impetuous, young couple whose love ultimately destroys them, uniting their families in grief, promises to be as hip as the Studio@620 itself. WHIZZ T

Gee

hink of Infiniti’s sexy new G37 sedan as a triple shot of espresso after a lifetime of drinking Sanka decaf. It’s like a Richard Simmons workout routine for all the little hairs on the back of your neck. As new cars go, this thing is more fun than a day at Disney, more of a thrill ride than SheiKra at Busch Gardens, and more addictive than Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey. It’s what happens when you squeeze a new high-revving 3.7-liter 328-horsepower V-6 under the hood of this svelte four-door, and hook it up to a brand new seven-speed automatic. Count from one to five and a half and that’s how long it takes for the G-car to lunge from zero to 60mph—a tad faster if you opt for the shift-it-yourself six-speed manual transmission. Infiniti set the sports sedan world alight when it introed the original G35 back in late 2002. Here, finally, was a serious and credible rival to BMW’s benchmark 3-Series.

90 www.duPontREGISTRY.com/TampaBay

It got a major makeover in 2007, with a redesigned body and new interior, and for 2009 gets the latest and greatest 3.7liter ‘six’ and that new seven-speed auto. It still goes head to head with BMW’s 328i and Mercedes’ new C300. But the competition has grown to include the impressive new Cadillac CTS, the funky new Acura TL, and Audi’s terrific new A4. Prices kick off at $34,015 for the base G37 with the driver-focused G37 Sport coming in at $35,015. Planning to head to Minnesota any time soon? You might need the all-wheel drive G37x at $36,515. Most of the G37’s athletic genes come from its rear-drive chassis that’s developed from the one used in Nissan’s latest 370Z sports car. It provides the G with surgicallyprecise steering and the kind of poise and balance and sheer grip through curves that will steal your breath. Hit the brakes and you could ripple the earth’s crust.

Infiniti's new G37 is the closest you can get to a four-door sports car

By Jeff Ellis

And it’s as sporty inside as it is out. Opt for the Sport version and you get bodyhugging seats that might just be the most supportive and best-fitting I’ve ever sat in. While space up front is generous, legroom in the back is a little on the tight side. And while the trunk is verging on cavernous, the opening isn’t much bigger than a mail slot. But as a thrill-a-second driver’s car, the G37 is up there with the best—a fact not lost on the guys at Car and Driver who just voted it one of their 10 Best for ’09. Perhaps they should re-name it Gee Whizz. Test drive the new G37 at Lokey Infiniti in Clearwater, or Infiniti of Tampa. How Much: $34,015 to $36,515. Engine: 3.7-liter V-6. Power: 328 hp @ 7,000 rpm. Torque: 369 lb-ft at 5,200 rpm. Transmission: 7-speed automatic/6-speed manual. Fuel economy:18 city/26 highway. FOR: Four-door sports car.AGAINST: Subtle styling. dR

dR AUTO Hyundai’s new Genesis can go head-to-head with Europe’s finest

New Fashioned By Jeff Ellis

I

t’s grabbing more awards than Juno on Oscar night. It recently dethroned Lexus to win Consumer Reports’ coveted Best Upscale Sedan accolade. And the big shocker, it just got voted 2009 North American Car of the Year. We’re not talking about some ritzy new Mercedes-Benz, or ultimate driving machine BMW here. Nope, the car that’s grabbing the luxury car headlines is the new Hyundai Genesis. Pardon me while I lift your jaw off the floor. Forget all those preconceived notions of Hyundai being the builder of all things cheap and cheerful. With the Genesis, it can pretty much stand shoulder to shoulder with Lexus and the German luxo-car makers. The only difference; you pay around 25 percent less. That works out at $33,000 for the base 290-hp V-6, and $38,000 for the all-singing-and-dancing 375-hp V-8. OK, so there’s nothing too groundbreaking about the design. Its styling is a pick ’n mix assortment of other luxury car

LUXURY

makers’ design cues. That front end? Very Merc S-Class. Rear lights? Straight off a 5Series BMW. Side profile? Pure Lexus GS. But it all comes together in a sleek, elegant shape that’s as easy on the eye as Christie Brinkley in Lycra. It’s all very tasteful too, with just enough chrome to decorate and a color palette verging on the somber. Climb aboard and you’d think you were entering a Lexus LS. Soft-grain, double-stitched leather washes around the cabin with satin wood and techie satin aluminum for accents. It’s cavernous too, with Barcaloungersized front seats, more rear seat legroom than an S-Class Benz and a trunk that would get two thumbs up from Tony Soprano. And the quality, the fit and finish, is nothing less than staggering. From the vault-like ‘thunk’ of the doors as they close, to the rock-solid feel of everything you touch, the Genesis is a masterpiece of manufacturing.

Twist the key and the surprise and delights just keep on coming. The allnew 4.6-liter all-alloy V-8 powering our test car was smoother than Roger Moore in his 007 days. It’s quick too. Floor the gas and the big, rear-drive Hyundai will rocket from rest to 60mph in just 5.7 seconds and cruise all day at 100-plus in stealthy silence. No, it’s not as sporty or dynamic as a BMW 5-Series or Infiniti M45, but if luxury and refinement head your automotive wish list, the Genesis won’t disappoint. Test drive the new Hyundai Genesis at Crown Hyundai in St. Petersburg, Fitzgeralds Countryside in Clearwater, and Courtesy Hyundai in Tampa. How Much: $33,000 V-6, $38,000 V-8. Engine: 3.8-liter V-6 or 4.6-liter V-8. Power: 290-hp V-6, 368-hp V-8. Torque:264 lb-ft V-6, 324 lb-ft V-8.Transmission:6-speed automatic. Fuel economy: V-6: 18 city/27 highway, V-8: 17 city/25 highway.FOR: Low-price luxury car. AGAINST: A $38-grand Hyundai. dR

Art Heaven By Nicole Waters

For the past 38 years, Downtown Tampa has transformed into an art Mecca every March for the annual Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, and this year is no exception. On March 7th and 8th, nearly 300 national and international award-winning artists will showcase their work at the premier juried outdoor fine art and craft show, setting up shop throughout Lykes Gaslight Square Park and along Franklin Street. Considered one of Florida's premier cultural events, the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts selects a number of accomplished artists and rising stars from around the globe to participate in this celebrated show. Artists vie for what is considered to be among the country's leading cash awards, including the coveted $15,000 Raymond James Best of Show Award. For the 2009 event, cash awards to artists have increased to an all-time high of $75,000. Some of the winners might include Scott Coulter of Sarasota with his impressionistic paintings that appear hyper realistic when viewed from any distance, or San Francisco-based sculptors Robbie Robbins and Lou Pearson whose powerful and graceful works are part of numerous private and public collections. Participating Tampa Bay artists are Glenn Woods and Keith Herbrand of Pottery Boys Clay Studio of Palm Harbor, Steven Schramek of St. Petersburg-based Tropical Glass Creations, jewelry designer Anne Kantor of Tampa, large-scale, mix media artist Carolina Cleere of Tampa, painter Joan Duff Bohrer of Dunedin, and photographer Larry Humphrey of Brooksville. With more than 250,000 people expected to attend, the
