Real Estate Issue Dear Reader, You are holding the fifth annual Real Estate issue of the duPont REGISTRY™ Tampa Bay. A lot has changed in the real estate market over the last five years. Prices have gone up and prices have gone down and they will go up again. On our cover is an incredible home in Avila. I am sure there is nothing else quite like it in the Tampa Bay area. How many cities can make the same claim? Not many. In addition to sports, Tampa Bay can claim three firstclass performance halls, Ruth Eckerd Hall, Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, and the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg. It seems that every night something is going on in one of these great local venues. The friendly competition between the venues brings a constant stream of quality shows to our area. From Russia With Love Yelena Podolsky says it’s only fitting that an authentic Russian restaurant is now open in downtown St. Petersburg given the city’s history. The family-owned Yammy Mamma’s Food Kafe & Marketplace is a complete redo of the old Mansion by the Bay with a new modern green and yellow color scheme, beautiful wood floors, and highly polished wood tables. World of Art Some 7,000 works of art from around the world can be found at the Paintings of the World, downtown St. Petersburg’s newest art place on Beach Drive. Cinderella’s Carriage For a romantic evening, nothing beats a ride in Cinderella’s Carriage through downtown St. Petersburg’s waterfront parks, especially with Duke, a gorgeous Belgium horse with green-glitter painted hoofs in the lead. Duke and Henry, a Clydesdale who pulls a more traditional carriage, are quite the sight waiting for customers almost every day of the week. arithmetic: burn off equal or more calories than consumed and you’ll maintain or lose weight. But it’s easier said than done. Brown had tried diets in the past, but with little success. Determined to shed the weight and improve her health, she enrolled at a medically supervised weight loss center. There are numerous physician-supervised centers in the Tampa Bay area that promise success where other programs fail. But are the claims true? Thousands of patients have enrolled at the Dr. Cesar A. Lara Center for Weight Management since it opened in 2002. About half of all new patients are 50 pounds overweight and already have a weight-related medical condition, such as diabetes or high cholesterol. “The other 50 percent are in a risk category but not necessarily affected yet,” says Lara, a board-certified family physician. “They are beginning to feel some of the consequences of having forgotten about

themselves. They have to be the mother, the worker, the wife. They have very little time to take care of themselves.” Whether they need to lose 15 pounds or 200, most of his patients—women and men—have tried other diets but failed, says Lara. “I am helping change people’s lives, and more importantly, putting them in the driver’s seat of their own lives,” he notes. The approach to weight loss at many medical weight loss centers includes a thorough medical examination, individualized diet and exercise plans, and individual and group support. FDA-approved appetite suppressants can be prescribed and their use monitored by a physician. Some centers offer vitamin and mineral supplements, including weekly Vitamin B injections. Support, encouragement, and accountability are important components of the program at Success by Design, a weightloss center supervised by Debra

Medical experts agree that a twopound weight loss per week is healthy, although many patients often lose more initially. That’s what happened with Lisa Brown, who eventually lost nearly 100 pounds in seven months under Figueroa’s care. “I lost 12 pounds the first week. That gives you that high and that mental energy. You feel like you can do it,” recalls Brown. “I’m very excited and proud of myself. I’m a whole different person.” Janet Thompson of St. Petersburg felt the same way after losing 40 pounds at a weight loss center. “I had tried every diet under the sun, but I always failed. Having the support and knowing that I would be weighed every week kept me motivated,” she recalls. The busy professional and mother of two kept the weight off for six months after completing the program, but began gaining weight after holiday and stress-related binge eating, she admits. “I gave away all my size 16 clothes when I lost the weight, and I’ll be damned if I’m going to replace them. I know how to lose the weight. I just have to do it.” Lara’s program incorporates a transition phase to help reinforce healthy eating and exercise habits patients have maintained during the weight-loss portion of the program. Most patients who complete the transition have maintained their desired weight for at least six months, he reports. “The majority of people who tend to fail look at it as ‘I have to get there and then I’m done’. But it’s a lifelong journey. It’s a lifestyle change,” he explains. “It’s like anything in life—it’s something you need to continue. hat’s trendy in luxury homes today are features that all buyers of a certain demographic clamor for. chicken or pork—starts with lilikoi, a Hawaiian passion fruit. Yamaguchi described the process he goes through in coming up with new recipes, this one in particular. “When I conceive a dish, I always come up with it mentally,” he explained. “I never just start cooking. I can picture a dish, and I can picture a taste. “So I say to myself, ‘OK, I want to do a tuna dish. I want to keep it rare and serve a salsa on the side. What kind of salsa do I want? Maybe passion fruit. It’s perfumey and sour in its fresh state. So what do I do to it? Let’s try and add palm sugar—it’s nice and creamy. But I don’t want the dish really sweet, so how do I cut it? How about Tabasco? It brings a little heat and it’s a little vinegary. It complements the sourness, and the sweetness of the sugar.’ “But that alone doesn’t have the body. So I add onions and green onions and then chip some cilantro in there for herb flavor. You get some roundness from the onions, and mixed with the passion fruit and Tabasco, it all sort of meets in the middle.” Ah, if it were only that easy for the rest of us. Yamaguchi said the Seared Ahi with Lilikoi-Shrimp Salsa tasted good on the first try, but he discovered something that will aid home chefs. “I found the salsa tasted better about an hour after I made it,” he said. “The juices from the onions seeped into the passion fruit, and the flavor of the [sautéed] shrimp seeped into the salsa. “If you let it sit too long, though, the shrimp starts to get overcooked from the acid, the cilantro gets too overwhelming. There’s a point in time where it all comes together, but it starts to fall apart after that.”

1/4 cup minced Maui or other sweet white onion 1 large Roma tomato, peeled, seeded, and finely diced 2 tablespoon finely diced scallion (including green parts) 1 tablespoon minced fresh cilantro 1 teaspoon Tabasco sauce Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12 ounces Ahi Tuna in 3-ounce blocks To prepare: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the passion fruit with a spoon and press it through a fine-mesh sieve. Reserve the juice (about 1 tablespoon) and discard the seeds and pulp. Put the shrimp in a small bowl and toss with the olive oil to coat. Set a dry stainless-steel sauté pan over high heat and, when hot, add the shrimp. Sear, turning often until evenly pink, about one minute. Transfer to a non-reactive bowl and add the reserved passion fruit juice, onion, tomato, scallion, cilantro, Tabasco

sauce, and salt and pepper to taste. Toss well to combine. Cover and refrigerate. Put the ahi on a plate, coat with peanut oil, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Set a dry cast-iron skillet over high heat for 2-3 minutes and, when hot, sear the ahi for about 30 seconds on each side for rare, or about 1-1/2 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Transfer the ahi to serving plates and spoon salsa over the tuna, letting the juices from the salsa run onto the plates. If you view holiday feasts the way that I do, you know that they’re a great opportunity to serve some great wine. So, how limited are your choices if you’re serving either of the two traditional staples? Well, the news is good, because both foods are wonderful for showing wines.

et’s face it—hams are salty and, not to mention, fatty. While this may sound like a handicap, these are two qualities that work beautifully with certain wines. What we need is a wine with good acidity to cut through the fat. Another beverage trait that mitigates salt and fat is carbonation. This leads us easily to champagne or sparkling wines, which tend to be also high in acidity. Champagne is also a natural special occasion wine, so here’s the perfect excuse to pop the cork! Surely you’ve heard of “red wine with red meat and white wine with white meat.” These antiquated guidelines have become blurred in the modern age of wine and food pairing, but it’s time to introduce a new corollary to this old theory: Pink wine with pink meat! It may sound laughable, but when you start putting it to use, you’ll find that it truly works. Pink meat means salmon, carpaccio and, of course, ham. I can almost guarantee that any preparation of these foods with a good rosé will result in a

brilliant match. The reason is not because both the meat and the wine are pink. Perhaps coincidentally, each of these foods has properties that are complemented by all the best qualities in the rosé. With the ham, the sweetness of the glaze often matches the light berry fruit flavors in the wine. The spices that may be in the ham also complement these same flavors. Also, the crispness of the wine cuts through the salt-iness and fat in the meat. Of course, we can’t forget how well sparkling wine works, so why not go for some rosé bubbly? Lamb can be one of the most flavorful and intense meats you choose to serve. The important point to remember when pairing wine with lamb is the impact of the wine should match the impact of the dish. Basically, this means you have a perfect excuse to serve big reds. When we say “Big Reds” we mean those with a lot of body and tannin structure like top-notch Bordeaux or Rhone wines, well-structured American Cabernets, inky Australian Shiraz, Italian

Brunello di Montalcino, and other vinous powerhouses. You see, lamb’s gamy flavors can easily overwhelm more delicate wines like Burgundy, American Merlot and Pinot Noir. Bordeaux and lamb is perhaps the most classic pairing. In left-bank Bordeaux, Cabernet is the main component, and its full body matches the full flavor of the dish, while its ample tannins scrub the fattiness from the palette after each sip. However, we don’t need to limit ourselves to Bordeaux; we can use a fullbodied Cabernet from anywhere in the world to achieve a similar effect. One of my favorites is Washington State Cabernet Sauvignon. Cabernets from this area have a terrific grace to balance all that power. Some even have an herbal eucalyptus quality that goes perfectly with the traditional mint jelly or other minty accoutrements that might be used to dress the lamb. For an excellent non-traditional pairing, look no further than a good Brunello di Montalcino. Brunello is made from

Sangiovese like many other Italian reds. The Brunello is a specific clone of the grape (Sangiovese Grosso) that yields a much more full-bodied and tannic wine than other types of Sangiovese,

giving it the ability to stand up to intense red meat dishes with gamy flavors. Truly Italian in style, Brunello can convey a mouth-watering liveliness on the palate that other wine styles cannot, bringing

Jasper Johns Prints: Things the Mind Already Knows

If this exhibit had a sound track it would be jazz. The collaborative and easily manipulated printmaking process inspired Jasper Johns to playfully riff on familiar objects, such as letters, numbers, targets, and American flags, as well as experiment with themes from his famous paintings. And like jazz, this exhibit, organized by the Beth Ann Morean Arts Center, is modern and cool. And fun. If you missed the exhibit of Johns’s works on paper at the Met in New York City that ended in February, you can see a selection of prints produced over forty years by the iconic pop artist, culled from the John and Maxine Belger Foundation’s collection, right in the heart of downtown St. Petersburg. This Elizabethan classic, interpreted by director Bob Devin Jones, starts at the Capulet ball, rather than the street brawl because, Jones says, that’s what the audience is waiting for. Indeed, it’s the scene where Romeo meets Juliet, setting in motion the tragedy’s arc. The script manipulations are faithful to Shakespeare’s original play, he says, and should suit modern attention spans and aesthetics. With simple staging and modern costuming, the play about the impetuous, young couple whose love ultimately destroys them, uniting their families in grief, promises to be as hip as the Studio@620 itself. t’s grabbing more awards than Juno on Oscar night. It recently dethroned Lexus to win Consumer Reports’ coveted Best Upscale Sedan accolade. And the big shocker, it just got voted 2009 North American Car of the Year. We’re not talking about some ritzy new Mercedes-Benz, or ultimate driving machine BMW here. Nope, the car that’s grabbing the luxury car headlines is the new Hyundai Genesis. Pardon me while I lift your jaw off the floor. Forget all those preconceived notions of Hyundai being the builder of all things cheap and cheerful. With the Genesis, it can pretty much stand shoulder to shoulder with Lexus and the German luxo-car makers. The only difference; you pay around 25 percent less. That works out at $33,000 for the base 290-hp V-6, and $38,000 for the all-singing-and-dancing 375-hp V-8. OK, so there’s nothing too groundbreaking about the design. Its styling is a pick ’n mix assortment of other luxury car

makers’ design cues. That front end? Very Merc S-Class. Rear lights? Straight off a 5Series BMW. Side profile? Pure Lexus GS. But it all comes together in a sleek, elegant shape that’s as easy on the eye as Christie Brinkley in Lycra. It’s all very tasteful too, with just enough chrome to decorate and a color palette verging on the somber. Climb aboard and you’d think you were entering a Lexus LS. Art Heaven By Nicole Waters

For the past 38 years, Downtown Tampa has transformed into an art Mecca every March for the annual Gasparilla Festival of the Arts, and this year is no exception. On March 7th and 8th, nearly 300 national and international award-winning artists will showcase their work at the premier juried outdoor fine art and craft show, setting up shop throughout Lykes Gaslight Square Park and along Franklin Street. Considered one of Florida's premier cultural events, the Gasparilla Festival of the Arts selects a number of accomplished artists and rising stars from around the globe to participate in this celebrated show. Artists vie for what is considered to be among the country's leading cash awards, including the coveted $15,000 Raymond James Best of Show Award. For the 2009 event, cash awards to artists have increased to an all-time high of $75,000. Some of the winners might include Scott Coulter of Sarasota with his impressionistic paintings that appear hyper realistic when viewed from any distance, or San Francisco-based sculptors Robbie Robbins and Lou Pearson whose powerful and graceful works are part of numerous private and public collections. Participating Tampa Bay artists are Glenn Woods and Keith Herbrand of Pottery Boys Clay Studio of Palm Harbor, Steven Schramek of St. Petersburg-based Tropical Glass Creations, jewelry designer Anne Kantor of Tampa, large-scale, mix media artist Carolina Cleere of Tampa, painter Joan Duff Bohrer of Dunedin, and photographer Larry Humphrey of Brooksville.
