DTSP’S ARTISTIC ARRANGERS
dR: What's on the horizon this year that excites you? KS: We are starting to move into the exhibitions and programs that I initiated with our curators when I arrived, so I am really excited to see some of those projects come to fruition. They all underscore the incredible diversity of programming that only we can offer – from a backyard archaeological dig for ancient mosaics, to a new view of abstraction by women artists of color, to presenting one of the most important collections of midcentury jewelry design in the world – we get to do all of it this year. And that’s just three projects. There are so many more! We will be busy. dR: What's your take on the Tampa Bay performing arts scene? KS: In my first year back in this area, my focus has been almost exclusively on the MFA and getting to know the visual arts community here. That being said, I am a fan (and supporter) of The Florida Orchestra and I look forward to getting out to experience even more in the performing arts spaces in the coming year.

rts and culture is big business in downtown St. Pete, toted by national media outlets such as USA Today, and, Architectural Digest. With seven arts districts in one vibrant downtown neighborhood and robust arts events (2nd Saturday ArtWalk, Shine Mural Festival, El Cultura) and several new museums and galleries, it’s no wonder tourists and locals flock to DTSP. dR Tampa Bay caught up with three of downtown’s Titans of Art representing the diversity of the city’s arts offerings: a traditional museum that is anything but traditions (MFA) , an emerging arts district (WADA) and a beloved performing arts venue with theater and multimedia programs and a new free student pass for Main Stage productions. (American Stage).
dR: What do you hope to see happen in the performing arts scene? KS: I hope the performing arts will continue to be an important part of the overall arts scene in this area. And you can definitely expect to see more performance at the MFA! I am planning an exciting exhibition two years out that focuses on theatre arts by modern masters, including Picasso, Matisse, Hockney, and many others. It will be an opportunity for us to activate our galleries with music, dance, spoken word, and more.
Kristen A. Shepherd, Executive Director – Museum of Fine Arts (MFA)
dR: Why did you choose to come to Tampa Bay and MFA? KS: I could not resist the opportunity to return to the Tampa Bay area to make a difference at a museum I have loved since I was a kid. The MFA is the flagship museum, a center of gravity, for the vibrant arts community in St Petersburg. We are the only comprehensive collection in this area, so everything is possible here. We can tell all the stories and serve this community in ways no other museum in our area can. Hidden gem no more! The opportunity to lead the museum into its next big chapter is an opportunity few cities could offer.

By Nanette Wiser Diane B. Morton, Executive Director - Stephanie Gularte, Producing Artistic Warehouse Arts District (WADA) Director - American Stage After an acclaimed career in California, Stephanie Gularte joined American Stage in 2015. She has produced more than 90 plays and musicals and directed or performed in more than 75 productions. Her inspired motto? “All experiences are an opportunity for growth.” dR: Why did you choose to come to Tampa Bay? SG: I had been deeply immersed in my community in California for many years and was so grateful to have had the opportunity to develop my skills as an arts leader and to make an impact in a region which had not previously been considered an "arts city." The

Morton is the new executive director for WADA, which encompasses 1st Avenue North to 10th Avenue South and 16th St. to 31st St. with 200 artists, arts businesses and organizations including Duncan McClellan Glass, MGA Sculpture Studio and the Morean Center for Clay. warehouseartsdistrictstpete.org dR: This is a big change for you, going from law to running an arts organization. DBM: For more than thirty years I have practiced law in Tampa Bay while simultaneously serving on non-profit boards. The opportunity to serve as Executive Director combines my love of the Arts with my love of community. I am thrilled to be at a pivotal place in the development of the District.
decision to make the move to St. Pete to join American Stage represented an opportunity to become a part of community with a ric history in the arts, but also to join in a kind of renaissance where the progressiveness, vibrancy and diversity of the arts landscape is exploding. dR: What's your take on the Tampa Bay performing arts scene? SG: Dynamic. Diverse. Evolving. With continued forward momentum our region has all of the ingredients to become a worldclass performing arts destination. dR: What do you hope to see happen in the performing arts scene? SG: A healthy performing arts scene includes multiple tiers of organizations, including educational, community, semi-professional and professional. This allows for the development of a strong local talent base as well as a sustainable model of collaboration, advocacy and viability. I'd love to see these tiers continue to be clearly defined in our performing arts community and for our organizations to work together to elevate the profile of the performing arts in Tampa Bay. G
dR: What’s going on this year for WADA? DBM: We are growing in every way from site improvement at the Arts Exchange to strengthening our businesses in the District. Our gallery and event space will introduce new artists and art installations to our community. Our studio artists, working in our recently completed rent controlled studios, create wondrous art every day. We hope to bring groups to experience art as it is being made. dR: What’s your take on Tampa Bay’s art scene? DBM: My take is a phrase I learned when I lived in London: "spoiled for choice." Every weekend we are spoiled with a myriad of choices for first class art experiences. From professional theatre to art exhibits we are incredibly lucky. Even better, we don't have to travel a long distance to have these experiences. dR: What would you like to see more of ? DBM: With all our growth I'd still like to see more author events and dance performances. We have plans in the Warehouse Arts District to build an education center to include a professional dance space. Our event space is perfect for author events and readings.

he Tampa Bay arts explosion is everywhere - public sculptures, radiant murals, cutting edge galleries, museum exhibitions and the NOMAD art bus to name a few. On display through May 27, 2018, this singular exhibition is the first of its kind dedicated to the friendship and mutual influence of two of the twentieth century’s greatest artists – the father of conceptual art, Marcel Duchamp, and Salvador Dalí, the champion of traditional painting and the imagination. Dalí and Duchamp were generally thought to represent completely different approaches to art, but through this unique exhibition their world of shared ideas is on full display. Duchamp was associated with the art movements of Dada and Surrealism, and is famous for

dR Celebrity Spotlight
PUNDIT DENNIS MILLER Comedy is serious business
P
olitical pundit Dennis Miller calls us from his car parked at a Santa Barbara area strip mall to talk about the “Florida circuit” he’s touring this spring, which includes a March 30th appearance at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater. “I like Florida, there are a lot of people who get my brand of humor,” says Miller, who will be shooting a new special in June. Don’t expect him to be too political, though. “The country’s too divisive right now and over the years I’ve become socially liberal on some things and conservative on the other.” Award-winning comedian Dennis Miller is known for his skewering, take-no-prisoner rants. From political diatribes on The O’Reilly Factor to his Saturday Night Live “Weekend Update” acerbic anchor commentary, he’s captivated audiences, nailed five Emmys and three Writers Guild of America awards for his critically acclaimed talk show “Dennis Miller Live.” He is also the author of five New York Times’ “The Rants” bestsellers and he’s even been a sportscaster on ABC’s Monday Night Football. Miller 3.0 is calmer and more focused on life’s adventures at 64, so expect half the show to be witty raconteur ramblings about getting older, traveling, unplugging and his passion for hockey, hiking and reading. “I don’t watch much television, although I like Tucker Carlson who’s a little bit like Zorro and interesting to watch. I turn on Turner classic movies after 5. You migh say I’m a bit of a Luddite these days,” says Miller. Aging is definitely on Miller’s miraculous meandering mind. “At 64, I’m getting a little forgetful. This morning, I forgot where I put my gingko biloba and found it near my Beats by Dr. Dre hearing aid.” There will be some political potshots, of course. “66% vs. 33% funny generic vs. political humor is what I’m aiming for. Hillary doesn’t go away, there’s the Mueller investigation and Trump makes for some fun and games,” notes Miller, who sees fractious politics making for cranky people and a divisive culture. These days, life’s adventures trump career goals. “In the old days, I was on fire to do everything I could but as I get older, it’s time vs. money. I want to travel to Bhutan and Sri Lanka this year, go to the river in Prague with my wife and kids,” says Miller, who’s currently deep into the 75 novels by PG Wodehouse.
He’s not sure where to hang his hat these days as the media climate shifts and morphs. In addition to the June special, he’s got his Miller Minutes in 50 markets and growing. “I go for the authenticity and joie de vivre, Norman Rockwell sensibility to make sense of things,” says Miller about his performances. dRTampa Bay asked Miller about post-fires in Santa Barbara. “Luckily, my family escaped harm but I just drove from my house and they finally opened Hotsprings Road and it looks like a bomb hit it,” he says sadly. He’s got his pet peeves, of course. Miller being Miller, the “emperor has no clothes” humorist is not thrilled with the oversharing on social media. I’m a little aghast at this generation’s obsession; the last we set the bar this low I was a dwarf. Lewis and Clarke didn’t keep notes as assiduously as the Kardashians do on breakfast,” he deadpans. “We have more ways to know each other than ever before and we know nothing.” Fake news is nothing new, according to Miller. “I’ve seen tapes where all this so-called infotainment began. You know who started it? Walter Cronkite, when he reported that it was time to get out of Vietnam, that’s where this cable mentality came from.” As for Trump, Miller doesn’t share the general disdain, pointing out that “he’s the idiotic billionaire who became the president of the United States? How silly to think he’s stupid.” But don’t think Miller respects the powerful and ignores the powerless. Like political cartoonists (Thomas Nast) and other pundits, he likes to tweak power and call BS when it’s time to out the pretenders. Miller takes the art of being funny seriously. “They know me, my approach, my arcane language and odd references,” says Miller whose stream-of-conscience speech and smirk mask hours of scholarly work-change to relentless research and a “somewhat good memory.” Oddly enough, the Pittsburgh native studied journalism in college but he never used it, except to be a “fake” newscaster on SNL. “What scratches my brain is writing jokes. I am extremely curious like to constantly learn new things.” G

dR Health Spotlight
CEO JOHN COURIS
T
ampa General Hospital (TGH) is a private, not-for-profit hospital on Tampa’s Davis Islands. Part of the fabric of the community for nearly 100 years, TGH is the primary teaching hospital for the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and has a deep and rich history of working together with both academic and community physicians. As a Level I Trauma Center,Tampa General Hospital was named the #1 hospital in Tampa Bay byU.S. News & World Report 20172018, and recognized as one of America's Best Hospitals in six specialties. In addition, TGH has earned and maintained Magnet status - the highest recognition a hospital can receive for nursing excellence – since 2005. As one of the most comprehensive medical facilities in West Central Florida, TGH serves 12 counties and is one of the largest hospitals in Florida, licensed for 1,010 beds. It’s one of the region’s largest employers, with more than 8,000 team members. John Couris, TGH’s new president and CEO, took over the reins of TGH in August 2017, just in time for Hurricane Irma. He saw firsthand how well the team worked, seamlessly executing their disaster plan. He knew he had made the right decision to become their leader. “They did an amazing job, and our patients were never in jeopardy,” Couris said. It’s that teamwork, he believes, that is the essence of an outstanding hospital like TGH. “The recognition fromU.S. News & World Report reflects our commitment to quality, and proves that the efforts of our team members really makes a difference,” Couris said. TGH is providing world-class health care, using cutting-edge technology and procedures, in a safe, patient-friendly environment. TGH performed Florida’s first heart transplant more than 30 years ago and is now one of the busiest organ transplant centers in the nation; by the end of 2018, TGH will have performed more than 10,000 transplants. New devices are being used to save patients’ lives and improve their health every day. Need a pacemaker the size of a multi-vitamin? A tiny tube that can vacuum out what once was considered a catastrophic blood clot? You can find them – and more brand-new and investigational technology – at TGH. It’s that innovation and exceptional patient care that Couris hopes will pave the way for TGH’s vision and development. dR: Why has TGH started a telehealth initiative? JC: We understand our patients are busy and that it’s hard to drop everything to come to the doctor’s office. That’s why we’re using technology to come to them. Our providers are using our TGH Virtual Care service to make it as easy and convenient as possible for our patients to get the care they need – no matter where they’re located. dR:Tell us about TGH’s leading services. JC: We have one of the largest transplant programs in the country with outstanding results, thanks to our multidisciplinary team. We are the only Level I Trauma Center on the West Coast. We are one of three verified burn centers in the state of Florida. Thanks to our academic partnership with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine, we have 330 residents and fellows and hundreds of allied health professionals that we train every day, as well as a robust research platform with over 400 clinical trials. Last year, we did 32,000 surgeries and 500 transplants.
22
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
dR: Tell us about your plans for TGH. JC: We are creating a patient-centered system of care. Everything we do is organized around the patient. We want to create an environment that is seamless, transparent and intuitive for the patient -so the patient doesn’t have to worry about how to coordinate services; we coordinate services for them. We need to continue to invest in new technology and new programs and new infrastructure, such as new operating rooms and new imaging technology. We continue to collaborate with our physicians on best practices. To enhance patient care, we are moving to a service line orientation: for example, we are organizing around the patient journey from the outpatient world, inpatient world and post-acute world to services such as women’s and children, cancer care, cardiology, neuroscience, transplant, orthopedics, health and wellness, thyroid and parathyroid, and imaging. Our plan is to continue expanding into the community to provide high quality care and easier access to our patients. dR: How do you keep your finger on the pulse of TGH? JC: A couple of times a month, I put on scrubs and work alongside the staff — cleaning floors, transporting patients, and working in the emergency room or operating room. When you walk in your team members’ footsteps, you see the world through their eyes and better understand their experiences in the organization. This allows me to get to know people and builds anesprit de corps that’s critical. My approach is that I want to be authentic, genuine and transparent. I want to inspire the team to be the best they can be. If you have happy, engaged team members who feel supported and listened to, and their issues are being resolved, you ensure that your patients receive world-class care. dR: How do you connect with the staff about TGH news? JC: I meet with our leadership team monthly and host hospital-wide communications forums several times a year. Once a month I make a video for our team members. We call it “Out and About with John,” and each month I go to a different department and talk to them about a new innovation they have introduced. For instance, I just highlighted TGH’s Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). They have installed web cams for every baby – and that’s nearly 100 beds. Thanks to these cameras, when parents and family members can’t be at the NICU, they can go online 24/7 with secure access and a private password so they can see their baby. Maybe there’s a military parent stationed overseas, or grandparents in a distant state. No matter what their challenges are, we can provide them a little more peace of mind. dR: What do the next five years look like for TGH? JC: We’re shifting paradigms. We have to stop thinking of ourselves as being in the sickness business and realize that we’re in the health and wellness and care coordination business. Once we focus our thinking that way, we can organize our resources and technology around the patient, not the other way around. We want to lower costs and drive quality up. The next five years will be exciting and fast-paced—we are going to flourish by disrupting the entire health care market through innovative technology and programs that all center on driving real value to the patient.

SHY WOLF SANCTUARY
hat happens to the countless exotic and captive-bred animals that have been injured, neglected, or abandoned? Many of these animals would be put down due to state laws, as they are considered to be potentially dangerous. Thanks to non-profit Shy Wolf Sanctuary in Naples, a few have escaped a sad fate. Shy Wolf Sanctuary has provided a home for not only abandoned wolves and wolfdogs but many other exotics that need a place to call their own. This haven also provides a home for abandoned wolves and wolfdogs as well as skunks, raccoons, foxes, lemurs, prairie dogs, and even a Florida Cougar named Cimarron. Volunteers work tirelessly to ensure these animals are given the best life they can possibly have, especially since many of them have come from neglectful or even abusive situations. Clara is a New Guinea Singing Dog (commonly referred to as “Singer” by her friends) who was rescued by Shy Wolf Sanctuary after being surrendered to an animal shelter in Texas in the summer of 2017. Originally named Luna, her name was changed to Clara since the sanctuary already had a wolf in their care with that same name. Singers are not like domesticated dogs and still remain somewhat wild in their nature. Clara is now living happily with her companion Hunter at the Executive Director’s extra kennel. Treasure was found as a stray at a junkyard in Brooksville. He was taken to the local animal shelter, where the staff immediately fell in love with his amber eyes. As a rule, shelters cannot adopt out dogs that
show any signs of having wolf in their bloodline. The Hernando County Animal Control finally called Shy Wolf Sanctuary to come and take this sweet boy. He is no longer at risk of being put down here and enjoys going for walks and meeting new visitors who come to the sanctuary. Educating the public is very important to Shy Wolf Sanctuary, and each year volunteers visit dozens of local elementary schools to spread the message of how important wolves are to our ecosystems. These volunteers will often bring an animal ambassador with them as they teach children about how to respect both exotic and captive-bred animals. G

A DREAM COME TRUE
www.rowdiessoccer.com

ocal soccer star Kyle Curinga, 23, joins the Rowdies' 2018 team after playing in Finland and Utah. A graduate of Clearwater Central Catholic High School and Times’ All County Player, he is thrilled to be with his dream team, the Rowdies, who kick off their 2018 season at Al Lang Field on March 24th. "It's a dream to sign for your hometown club," Curinga said. "I'm really looking forward to the 2018 season and proving my worth with this historic club. I can't wait to play in front of these fans, especially Ralph's Mob." Curinga is excited to be back at the beach. “The journey has been a little wild. After Florida Atlantic University, I played in Finland for GBK Kokkola and FF Jaro the first three years, then Utah and now back here,” says Curinga. “The Rowdies have always been a goal I wanted to check off and playing at home in front of friends and family for a team of this stature is exciting.” Look for big things from this young and promising defender. In two seasons with GBK in 2014 and 2015, he made 50 appearances and scored four goals. He trained with the Rowdies last winter and played as a trialist in the 2017 Florida Cup before ultimately signing with the Real Monarchs SLC in the USL. “Kyle is a player that we had here with us last pre-season and we were really impressed with him,” Rowdies Head Coach Stuart Campbell said. “He had a great season in the USL last year and we’re excited to bring him home with the Rowdies.

He’s at the right age to really kick on and take the next step in his career.” Curinga is truly a local boy. Both his parents were born and raised in Pinellas County and went to the same high school. He has an older sister an and 11-year old brother who wants to follow in his fancy footsteps. A boat-load of classmates and friends will be cheering him on and his girlfriend will be watching from Finland, there in spirit. One of the best parts for Curinga is playing with soccer legends and being mentored by his teammates, especially Joe Cole, Neill Collins, Marcel Schäfer and Georgi Hristov. “I like to bounce ideas off them, ask them how I can make a play better and get their advice,” says Curinga, who also credits club coach Hans Burt and his high school coach Jim Harte for inspiring him. What’s a typical day for a Rowdies player like Curinga? “Waking up with a good breakfast like a bowl of oatmeal and berries and peanut butter and honey and maybe avocado toast. Take a bath to loosen my muscles, then head off to training after stretching and foam rolling and other exercises.” As a new St. Pete resident, Curinga likes to grab a bite at Locale or Bodega. “Downtown has changed a lot in ten years,” he says laughing. Curinga’s laid-back Florida demeanor and laser focus is sure to make him a fan favorite. He’s a cheerleader for the Rowdies franchise and their approach. “We’re family-friendly and affordable fun. Come on out and wear your green and gold!” G

City of St. Petersburg
Top Boomtowns In Florida: According to Smart Assets, St. Petersburg is one of the ten hottest towns in Florida, coming in at #5. From 2015 to 2016, St. Petersburg saw a large influx of residents. According to our data, new people coming to the area outnumbered the people leaving by about 1.9% of the total population. Despite that large influx St. Petersburg has not built quite as many homes, which is why it falls to fifth in this ranking. From 2015 to 2016, the housing supply in this city increased by only 4.3%. Business in St. Petersburg is still booming, however. Over the past five years the GDP grew by 4.2%, a score which beats 90% of cities in this study. G

Ride in Style. Ride with Moke.
Something Fresh. Something Classic. Something That Epitomized Out-Of-The-Box Thinking. Introducing the new Moke America: A 20th-century collectible car reinvented with 21st-century green-friendly electric power, available exclusively in the USA. The Moke (rhymes with “bloke) is far from a museum piece. Our electric car is versatile, carbon-free and efficient. This upgraded version has more—more legroom, expanded trunk space, a kickin’ sound system and all the benefits of cool, quiet electric power. The Moke stays true to its roots while keeping its headlights on the future. At Moke America, we have reengineered the entire car, while keeping Moke’s classic design and spirit alive. We made the car bigger, wider and stronger. Our car is 2,300 pounds. It's the heaviest Moke ever built. It feels sturdier than the old Mokes. We raised the wheel from a 13-inch wheel to a 14-inch wheel, so it’s taller. We redesigned the windshield so the glass is larger, stands across farther and is higher. We implemented a five step E-Dip process to control the quality of the paint. We also do undercarriage rust proofing to prevent corrosion.
Most importantly, we wanted the Moke to be green. The old Mokes had engines that were very noisy. With ours, it's silent when you drive. You can charge it with a 110-outlet. It plugs into any household outlet. Eight hours gets a full charge, and a full charge can get you almost forty miles of drive time. Moke America is a neighborhood electric vehicle. It’s a car that's driven around town to visit friends, the beach, the supermarket. And it’s better for the environment. The biggest components of the Moke are made in America, including the glass, seat belts, tires and batteries. All ten batteries are made in America. The product is assembled here on American soil. If you have a problem with the batteries, we have them right here on the shelf. It’s easy to use, easy to wash. The whole car can be hosed down, inside and out. We offer a Bimini top so you’re half outdoors, half indoors. The look and design is better than the original because it is longer, wider and closer to an American car.

CHEF JASON VARGO’S NEW MENU SIZZLES fried in non-GMO sunflower oil, which he stands by strongly. The diver U-10 sea scallops are fresh from Connecticut. The Norwegian salmon is flown in from Iceland and he uses Wild-Caught North Atlantic cod, a favorite of his. He recently flew to Wooster OH to check out the test kitchen for his Certified Angus Beef, that he has been using since he opened the restaurant, visiting local farms where they raise the cattle which is held to very high standards. He also uses cagefree brown eggs, heirloom tomatoes and micro-greens . One of his favorite items you’ll see on the menu is Wild Red Argentina Red Shrimp that “tastes like baby lobster, with a lovely earthy taste.”

he sound of music wafts from Aqua Prime’s patio as patrons nibble apps and sip wine while catching up on what’s new in Indian Rocks Beach. Thanks to Aqua Prime’s culinary maestro Chef Jason S. Vargo, one of the season’s highlights is the new menu, wine list and crafted cocktails. He’s been a chef for 24 years and at 38, his passion for food and ingredients drives this stellar new menu. Now owned by Premier Event Hospitality Group, the casual but upscale restaurant is garnering rave reviews—especially the chef. Chef Jason has a passion for perfection, and his attention to detail shows in his menu. “We’re about Sea To Table, with handcut steaks. Being a part of the community and using local vendors for fresh produce and ingredients is the key to my dishes,” says Vargo proudly.
"...Chef Jason's savory new menu is upscale casual as is Aqua Prime's vibe..."
SEA TO TABLE MENU Beautifully plated, the savory dishes are fun and approachable as is the casual chic vibe in both the restaurant and bar, where no one is a stranger. Aqua Prime is a chef-driven restaurant, with Vargo in charge through three sets of owners. “I have put my heart and soul into Aqua Prime. and From decor to menu, I have been apart of all the changes. We've updated the new plates, glassware, candles, fans, the bar, paint, landscaping, the logo menu, and interior décor with new lighting,” says Vargo proudly. “I want the experience to be memorable...the ambience, the service and especially the food.” SMOKED FUSION COASTAL CUISINE The new menu reflects his hands-on approach, creative ideas, locally sourced ingredients and expertise in creating consistently delicious fare that’s unique on the beach. “With this menu, we have evolved. One day I saw a opportunity where smoke fusion was lacking on the beach, and came up with the tagline "We are A Smoked Fusion Coastal Cuisine", Just enough smoke to elevate certain dishes to make you want more,” says Chef Jason. Sourcing ingredients is a passion for Chef Vargo. His food is

FLORIDA’S PINK PALACE: MARITANA GRILLE
T
he Don CeSar turned 90 this year, celebrating in style with a posh party and luring two fabulous chefs to revamp the menus, Executive Chef Michael Molloy and Maritana Grille’s Chef de Cuisine, Emily Ferrari. Formerly with the Vinoy, Chef Emily is a talented 29 year old culinary magician. Her Southern roots and Italian heritage influence her love of fresh sourced ingredients. ”We’re getting back to local seafood and farm fresh produce,” says Ferrari. “We still have the steaks we’re known for, but we’re showcasing more composed dishes with Mediterranean and Italian flavors, French style and a Southern twist.” Ferrari attended the Art Institute of Atlanta, working in upscale restaurants and moved to St. Pete in 2014 for a chemistry degree with a focus on food science. She worked at Maritana Grille once before, but after graduating moved to Chattanooga’s best restaurants and country club, recently returning to Maritana to helm the restaurant. A home cook in her mother’s and grandmother’s kitchens, she loves to play with dishes until they are perfect, sourcing microgreens (Brick Street Farms) and handcrafting every element of her dishes, all beautifully plated. “There’s a picture of me with my hands in dough when I was nine months old, and I’ve always loved being in the kitchen. We always had a great Sunday dinner and I want to bring that feeling of an extraordinary meal prepared with love to our guests,” says Chef Emily.
Maritana’s new menu is fun and approachable as is the casual chic vibe in both the restaurant and bar. White linen tablecloths, an exceptional guest experience, flickering white candles, elliptical white china and pewter accents (seashells, octopus, sea turtle), soft jazz and the aquarium tank dominated by a Moray eel create a serene ambiance. (Later this fall, Maritana Grille will be reinvented with a more modern vibe and seating, including a private dining area.) From the Fiji water in a pewter chiller to a redolent new wine list cultivated by Maritana Grille’s GM ames Pyles (Nickle and Nickle Pinot Noir and other California eno-stars), the dining experience is first rate without being fussy. Best of show handcrafted cocktails - inspired by the season – are The Flying Fig (Beluga vodka, St. Germain Elderflower, muddled figs, lemon), the Love You Gotta Keep (Hendrick’s gin, Pomegranate Arils, mint, lime), a Debonair Martini with gold flakes and the Booker’s Burbon Berry Bramble. First up is the best-smelling focaccia scented like an herb garden, with handcrafted seasoned butter. For starters, the chilled bruleed crab is a suberb dish, a deconstructed crab cake with asparagus blanches and served cold with citrus zest, a zing of Asian flavor and a bit of champagne gastric. In addition to the oysters and seared scallops with pancetta, the pork belly with pickled shallots, charred green onions and carrot puree is an homage to Chef Emily’s Georgia roots, who cures the pork in a salt and sugar mixture.

Farm-to-fresh delights include the roasted beet carpaccio with candied walnuts, blue cheese and a citrus vinaigrette and the heirloom mustard green salad with charred baby carrots and house-made cheese curd, paired with the ahi tuna sashimi. In addition to the traditional surf and turf and exceptional coffee-rubbed filet and venison loin, the sensational seafood is some of the best in Tampa Bay. The snapper, Maine lobster papardelle in a savory smoked broth and seared sea bass will
captivate you but it’s the black bass served with a butternut squash puree that is notable. “Everyone does Chilean sea bass, but I think the black bass has a richer, more flavorfull bite and I can get the skin nice and crispy,” says Chef Emily, whose accompaniments are equally astonishing, from the lemon caper sauce to the truffle pomme frites and sautéed mushrooms with a cabernet demi-glaze. Save room for the new dessert menu from Chef Jake, including the caramelized “fire and ice,” orange segmengs and a meringue toasted on the plate served on a fresh banana custard…or the decadent chocolate concoctions. When Chef Emily isn’t dreaming up new recipes, she likes to visit her Mom in Gulfport and go kayaking, read (American Gods is on her bedstand) and eat Asian food (ramen, sushi). As for Maritana Grille, if you’ve loved it before, you’ll discover even more to love now. G

Family Fun: National Geographic’s “Encounter” is an immersive experience that will keep you on your feet. It’s a virtual reality journey beneath the oceans of the world where you’re surrounded by sea creatures. This one’s fun for all ages. You’ll be on your feet moving from room to room so comfortable shoes are recommended.

Theater Unplugged: “Sleep No More” presented by McKittrick Hotel Emursive. It’s environmental theatre at its best. Taking place on 5 floors of an old hotel, you are turned loose and can follow any actor on their journey. Then take a break at the bar and head back out. You’ll need comfortable shoes for this one. And be warned. All audience members wear masks.

MOMA is more than just post–World War II art in all media; it's a haven for film buffs, sculpture garden bibliophiles and those who love modern photography and design. ccording to designer and visionary Ian Prosser, planning a THE LOOK BOOK garden party is all about creating cozy, sophisticated seating Whether you rent or use your interior furniture for an outdoor areas for intimate conversation. “Furniture adds intimacy party, the trick is to set up interesting nooks. Have a few sit-down or to an outdoor event; at the end of the night, your closest stand-up tables for dining. Mix up rustic chairs with velvet couches, friends will be lounging here.” modern lounges with a pop of pillow color and use linens to complete You can call him The Party Whisperer. “When we started off we your color theme against a background of gray, green and white did a whole lot of flowers and then it morphed to weddings. Ten foliage. Throw down a rug, from Oriental to cowhide and layer years ago, I closed the retail stores and morphed into adding textures. Illuminate with lanterns hung from trees or the furniture so we could control the event and create nestled in plants and make each tableau unique. Add a lifestyle-driven event in people’s homes or venues,” wine, a great play list, cheese and dozens of friends. “Furniture adds says Prosser. Inspired by his travels and love of shop windows intimacy to an outdoor or found objects, Prosser’s party ideas are in demand and always in vogue. “We bring the event; at the end of the night, feeling of the inside out by going into the home, your closest friends will be exploring the host’s personality and vision, then lounging here.” instilling that unique, personal look and feel into the fete. We want to create a warm and nurturing place that lets people play and relax in,” says Prosser. Prosser’s home is a neutral haven accented by art collections, whimsical artifacts and objects of desire, from a crystal French perfume bottle and opera glasses tucked in a glass box on his coffeetable to white flowers. His best advice for party givers? “Don’t overthink it. Make people feel comfortable.” Check out Prosser’s 101 fab party ideas.

dR Home GET LIT Market lights are popular, but they are over used. Go to a garden center, find something that is more unusual such as tiny lanterns and stars. “We did a dock illuminated with lanterns. It was a fantastic visual and kept people from walking out there,” said Prosser.
COLOR ME BEAUTIFUL Although blue and violets are trending, they tend to turn to gray in the evening light. Go for more Lilly Pulitzer vibrant colors or sorbet colors. Cantaloupe, soft raspberry and shocking pink in a combo make it exciting. White flowers are sophisticated and subtle both on the table and in the garden (pansies, violas, geraniums impatients petunias hydrangea, pentes). The mix of textures is intoxicating
For them, a home or venue is a stage to be transformed into a magical and memorable occasion where the bar is the moon and beyond. The event planner is a designer for society events and celebrites including: The Versailles-themed Wine Weekend at MFA, Bern’s Wine Fest, Donna Summer, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, one of the Back Street Boys. G
TROPICAL FLAVOR Think Ernest Hemingway. Make the furnishings bamboo and bring in a modern vibe with angular white sofa and chairs accented by leafy pillows with a pattern. On the tables, you can use floral palm leaves or the bird of paradise seen here. Work in found objects and things you collect to personalize the décor.
VIVA LA FRANCE Right now, there’s a trend back to French décor. Have a collection of containers on the table (antique silver gray finish or handthrown clay or wire) and Provence Paris-style collectibles. Nothing fussy, simple elegance.
BE UNIQUE Go bold with each table setting, making interesting individual settings. Go beyond plants or flowers. Use a collection of different sizes of lanterns, accented by blooming plants in clay pots or herbs (mint, rosemary, oregano) on half the tables, flowers on the other half. Prosser likes white and green flowers/foliage on a chartreuse green tablecloth for spring entertaining. BOTANICA & STYLE HOUSE RENTALS Since 1989, Botanica International Design & Décor Studio has created beauty that resonates deeper than what the eye perceives. n Florida, paradise starts with stylish backyards that double as modern escapes, big on connectivity and luxury upgrades. Outdoor living is more than a few lounge chairs on a patio. Think outdoor rooms with the comfort and convenience of your living room. Here are some unique ideas for upgrading your home exteriors from docks to decks, patios to pools.

FURNISHINGS & ACCESSORIES Indoor décor is taking over the outdoors this season. Look for comfortable, attractive furniture: Say goodbye to weathered wicker and wrought iron, today’s furniture and fabric technology are weather-resistant. Combine different looks, from teak to retro, including mosaic tables. Incorporate colorful fabrics, strong colors such as magenta and deep teal, anything as long as it goes with green. Purple too crazy? Go with taupe, brown, charcoal and navy. Shoeless comfort begins with exterior painted floors, patterned floor tiles or outdoor floor rugs. Stripes and checkerboard patterns are classic options, and it gives the outdoor space polish. Add a modern ceiling fan such as Hunter, or a powerful Haiku fan to stay cool. UNFURL THE UMBRELLA When it’s sweltering, raise the umbrella, especially the sun-resistant Sunbrella and UV-stable brands that won’t fade. An umbrella is more than shade; it helps keep a space private or defined. Wood is better than aluminum, which dents and scratches and it helps to have an umbrella with wheels so it can be easily moved around. For small spaces, a cantilevered umbrella works best. Go for stripes (black, yellow or navy with white) or solid colors other than white. For a touch of whimsy, World Market features elephants and floral designs CREATE AN OASIS Turn your pool into a spa resort with the addition of stylish tile and pavers from Stone-Mart. Travertine is easily a good choice if you want a durable paver and coping for your pool. Using the material, you can build an elegant and high-quality travertine pool that looks incredible, smooth, and sophisticated, it will leave every guest impressed. The material can easily transform your swimming pool into a luxurious area for lounging and relaxation. You will find that your pool deck will be safer, too, as the material provides extra grip for the feet to prevent incidents of slipping and falling.

GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK For millennials, luxury real estate combines beauty and eco-sustainability
I
f you think luxury is a page out of TV shows like Dallas, think again. It’s no longer about acquiring cars and fine wines, although that’s still all the rage in the Tampa Bay market. But the new affluent millennials want something else. A live/work/play neighborhood like downtown St. Pete and Tampa’s newly evolving downtown. This demographic is also driving the real estate market and developers to include green certification, smart features and connectivity as well as aesthetics to the mix to improve resell.
...“Luxurious homes can be green and grand at the same time...” What are some of the benefits of going green? “From lighting to energy saving appliances and smart home features, reducing the carbon footprint is a huge trend and driver of sales for millennials,” says Ron Goldstein, Luxury Waterfront Specialist for Sotheby’s International Realty.
The Sand Pearl Residence is the first Clearwater Beach residential building that went all "green." This custom “wave wall” is a trademark of Decker-Ross, part of the condo's timeless design with the environment in mind. DeckerRoss.com
Here are some of the features you’ll see in today’s “greener” luxury homes and condos: Incorporating LEED standards: LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and is a certification from the US Green Building Council. Earning this certification lets everyone know that a project meets the highest benchmark for sustainability and eco-friendliness. Saving energy and water: The home design has to include innovative, cost-cutting features such as rainwater collection (for irrigation), solar panels and geothermal systems. In-wall touch screens from AMX control a home’s light, heat, irrigation, sound and more allowing homeowners to program such features remotely so energy is not wasted when they are not home.
Neal Communities' Venice Grand Palm Community are green certified under the Florida Green Building Coalition. NealCommunities.com
Goldstein’s passion in eco-sustainability led him to get certified in EcoBrokers® , which is the premier green designation for real estate professionals who are champions of eco-friendly alternatives for property buyers and sellers. “We help support this community initiative by looking at “green” factors that make a home a great buy including water quality, indoor air quality, green financing, energy efficiency, building performance, solar or geothermal options, wind and other renewable energy solutions, xeriscaping, organic practices, environmental labeling and property history,” says Goldstein. According to Goldstein and other eco-experts, they are growing in popularity. Environmentally-friendly luxury residences blend harmony, sustainable living and opulent style.

Build greener: Incorporate energy-efficient building materials (exposed concrete, steel super structure and aluminum exterior panels) and rooftop designs that conserve energy and make the most of solar power. Today, green roofs are so practical and effective that mainstream, design-focused authorities like HGTV are offering primers on how to install your own. (Luxury homes have incorporated green roofs and balconies for a mix of efficient, natural cooling and landscaped, aesthetic beauty.) floridagreenbuilding.org. Introduce connectivity and services powered by artificial intelligence: At the 2018 Home CES Show, it’s not just smart refrigerators that tells you when food expires or smart ovens that automatically start dinner when you call from the car. iHome products with built in Bluetooth speakers range from wireless charging, aromatherapy diffusers and vanity mirrors. There are wireless kitchens and a smart ring that let you turn on a light with the wave or your hand. Luxury homes automated by Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant are coming…or here now. G

BETTER OUTDOOR LIVING THRU INNOVATION What’s new on the horizon? This year’s tech and home extravaganzas yielded some intriguing outdoor helpers including: Satellite Controlled Sprinkler Systems: The Weather TRAK Water Resource Management System lets you conserve water while efficiently watering your lawn by using satellites to stay in touch with local weather conditions and only turn the sprinklers on as needed. Lawn Mowing Robots: They vacuum, and now, they mow thanks to Robomow, Husqvarna, and Worx.

native of St. Petersburg, Mary Kay Andrews has spent her life putting words to paper both as a writer for the Atlanta Constitution and as a witty whodunit novelist under her real name, Kathy Trochek. She’s cooked up a new endeavor with her first food foray, The Beach House Cookbook, with recipes she’s tested in her two restored vintage beach homes, The Breeze Inn and Ebbtide, both affectionately named after fictional places in her novels. In between cooking, entertaining friends and whipping up her next novel, Mary Kay’s favorite pastime is junking and fixing up old houses. CHERRY-LICIOUS GLAZED RIBS This recipe would probably work with Cherry Coke or Dr. Pepper, but if that Southern staple CheerWine is available in your neighborhood, that’s what will give it that uniquely cherry taste. Use two big disposable foil pans for this messy recipe. You can do it in the oven and finish it up in the oven, or best yet, on the grill. Serves 4 For The Ribs 2 tsp. kosher salt 2 tsp. light brown sugar 1 tsp. coarsely ground black pepper
1 tsp. chili powder 4 lbs baby back pork ribs 4 c. Cheerwine
For The Glaze 1 1/2 c. Cheerwine 1/2 c. cherry jam
1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 c. apple cider vinegar 1/4 c. tomato paste
Directions 1. Preheat oven/grill to 400°. In a small bowl, mix together salt, brown sugar, black pepper, and chili powder. 2. Rub all over ribs. Divide ribs between 2 large disposable aluminum roasting pans, being sure to place the slabs in meat side up. 3. Pour 2 cups Cheerwine into each pan, and cover tightly with aluminum foil. Roast ribs, switching pans’ positions halfway through cooking, until very tender, about 1 hour and 45 minutes. 4. While ribs cook, prepare the glaze. In a medium-size saucepan, whisk together Cheerwine, jam, brown sugar, Worcestershire, vinegar, tomato paste, mustard, and soy sauce. Set over medium heat. Let cook, whisking occasionally, until reduced and syrupy, about 20 to 25 minutes. Set aside. 5. Remove ribs from oven when tender. Remove foil and ribs from pans; pour fat and remaining liquid out of pans and discard. 6. You can finish these up on the a hot grill or in the oven. Carefully arrange for oven rack to be about 8 inches from broiler (no closer); preheat broiler. Brush ribs all over with prepared glaze and return to pans, meat side up. Broil for about 5 minutes or until lightly charred.

dR FYI
GRILLING TIPS: Gas vs. Charcoal - Gas does burn cleaner, but some folks prfer the smokier grilled burger taste. Buy additive free charcoal. Get It Hot - Pre-heat your grill 15 to 25 minutes before you start cooking to make sure it reaches the right temperature (and to kill any bacteria). Your grill should be 400-450°F for high, 350-400°F for medium-high, 300-350°F for medium and 250300°F for low heat. Use A Grill Basket - For foods that might fall through the grill rack or are too cumbersome to turn over one by one (vegetables, fish, tofu, fruits, etc.). www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com

Domaine Carneros by Tattinger, Brut Rose Sparkling Cuvee de la Pompadour: This sparkling rose from California’s Carneros wine growing region boasts a beautiful pale salmon color with a fine bead. Aromas of tangerine, strawberry and biscuit are also found in the mouth. The length is long and elegant.
Hall, Sauvignon Blanc, Napa Valley, 2015: A woody, toasted note speaks to well-integrated yet present oak in this white that maintains medium-bodied texture on the palate. Bright, lemony acidity complements the creaminess, dashing in wet stone and undeniable floral notes of apple and orange blossom.
Four Graces Reserve, Pinot Noir, 2013: The embodiment of elegance and finesse in winemaking, The Four Graces 2013 Dundee Hills Reserve Pinot Noir is perfectly balanced with seamless tannins and the ripe, lush red berry fruit profiles indicative of great Dundee Hills Pinot Noirs. Aromas of strawberries and heritage roses mingle with cloves and dark cherries, ending with
Swanson Vineyards, Pinot Grigio, Sonoma County, 2015: Pale golden straw in color, the 2015 Pinot Grigio calls to mind white jasmine blossom, crisp Asian pear, honey Meyer lemon zest and cantaloupe. BEST CUBAN SANDWICH SMACKDOWN

ark your calendars, Tampa, the International Cuban Sandwich Festival returns March 31 and April 1 to historic Ybor City. The contentious and never-ending debate concerning who makes the finest Cuban sandwich in the city, the state, and the world draws feverish passion from longtime area residents. Chefs gather to layeth the proverbial culinary smackdown to put such debates to rest once and for all.
Clash of the Cuban Sandwich Titans Prior to arriving in Tampa, the Cuban Sandwich Festival hosts special semi-final rounds in Kissimmee (March 3), and Miami (March 11). The winners advance to the main event in Ybor City. An exciting new facet to this year’s festivities is the attempt to construct the world’s largest Cuban sandwich at the Hillsborough Community College Ybor Campus on March 31. Last year, residents were treated to the South Korea-based restaurant Tampa Sandwich Bar. It marked the first visit to the Tampa Bay area for owners Geunmin Kang and Hyunmin Cho. They both did exhaustive research in order to craft their menu — Cuban and Mac N’ Cheese sandwiches, shrimp po’ boys, fried Oreos and sweet potato fries are main fixtures. If you’re in attendance then you’re already a winner. A panel of celebrity judges will converge in Tampa to decide winners in several categories: • Tampa Historic Cuban Sandwich • Non-Traditional Cuban Sandwich • Popular Cuban Sandwich • World’s Best Cuban Sandwich Smackdown Champions (Metro Orlando, Miami/South Florida) Local residents have the unique opportunity on March 31 and April 1 to sink their teeth into the most inventive Cuban-inspired fare ever concocted. The participating chefs earn the criminally overused and dried out adjective, exquisite. G
TOP CUBANS Aguila Sandwich Shop: The Cuban sandwich from Aguila was made famous after its appearance on the hit show Man Vs. Food. Many have poured into this Tampa staple to see if their taste buds were ready for the awesome sensation of an authentic Cuban sandwich. 3200 West Hillsborough Ave. Brocato’s Sandwich Shop: This spot has served Tampa well since 1948. While their breakfast sandwiches, deviled crab, and fried plantains are magnificent, their Cuban sandwich is what makes this restaurant famous. 5021 East Columbus Dr. Columbia Restaurant: You can’t talk about food in Tampa without mentioning the ever-popular Columbia Restaurant. The original restaurant opened in Ybor over 110 years ago. The restaurant spans five generations and now has locations all over Florida — 7 in total. The success of the restaurant is emblematic of their commitment to sharing the flavors of Ybor and the entire Tampa area with the rest of the state. 2117 East 7th Ave.

La Ideal Sandwich Shop: This small shop in Tampa packs some serious flavor into their outstanding Cuban sandwich. They make them with the highest quality ingredients and press them to perfection so that when you take your first bite you’re treated to that signature crunch. 2924 West Tampa Bay Blvd. Ruben’s Cuban Cafe:A popular spot amongst our local Twitter followers, Ruben’s Cuban Cafe has been open for almost three decades. The cafe brews some sensational cafe con leche, and their pressed Cuban sandwiches are equally impressive. 4941 East Busch Blvd. West Tampa Sandwich Shop: Known as the home of the honey Cuban sandwich, the West Tampa Sandwich Shop has been putting together the area’s finest Cuban for almost 40 years. The spot received national attention when President Obama paid the business a visit and remarked how much he enjoyed their sandwich in a phone call after his trip. 3904 North Armenia Ave. Wright’s Gourmet House: Tampa’s premier cafe has been open since 1963. Their large menu of sandwiches and cakes are legendary, but their award-winning Cuban sandwich is a true foodie gem in the city. 1200 South Dale Mabry G

It’s the age of artificial intelligence and 86-year-old Marjorie is worried that her memory is fading. by Chris Barnett holy grail. I had lunch in a lovely restaurant where virtually the entire menu was cod, everything except the dessert. The Portuguese, passionate about preserving their heritage, do not bend to trends. “Theirs is no Portuguese fast food—no pizza, no hamburger,” said Thomas, a waiter at a popular dining hangout, Can The Can. “For us, it’s seafood and wine in all variations. The food scene is vibrant, influenced by the immigrants of former African colonies to Arabian and Iberian cuisines. Carnivores aren’t shortchanged. Sirloin, sometimes topped with a slice of cured ham, pork belly or a cooked egg, is a delicious diversion.
At 6 pm sharp, a tall, wall aged wooden door creaked open and inside was a musty 19th century former grocery store with high ceilings, a warren of rooms, a few stools at a bar and toys from the first and second world war, hanging and sitting everywhere. It was a time machine, a hideout for patrons of the libational arts. Handsome barmen with engaging personalities were at my service. “I am Apolinio, the finest bartender in all of Lisbon,” roared a silver haired gent. “And this is Pedro, the worst barman in tall of Portugal. Pray that he doesn’t make your drink. Now what would you like?” I liked the refreshing gin and tonic that Apolinio skillfully mixed for me for US$11 but it somehow seemed more exciting when I discovered that former British prime minister Tony Blair and Russian president Vladimir Putin bellied up to the very same spot in the bar, separately not together, years earlier, flanked, no doubt by their bodyguards. I drank solo but quickly made friends with a handful of in-the-know locals and fellow travelers. I found the Portuguese to be initially reserved but they thaw quickly if your questions show genuine interest. Unlike neighboring Italians and Spaniards, they are not dramatic, emotional souls. Lisbon is a delightfully walkable city, safe, clean but filled with Ubers, taxis and hop on, hop off streetcars. English is spoken almost everywhere. The small central city of just 600,000 mixes whimsy with its antiquities. For instance, the lowly sardine is virtually worshipped in Lisbon, dating back to 1195 when patron saints sermonized fishes. There are sardine shops piled high with designer tins of the tiny critters and they are on almost every menu, eaten any time of day. Flags and mobiles fly honoring the sardine. A colorful, packed tin is a cherished souvenir. It’s the American hot dog of Portugal. Indeed, food and dining and conversation are national pastimes in Lisbon. Leisure is savored. For some unexplainable reason, stress is neither visible nor felt nor communicated. It must largely sunny climes and the serenity of the everpresent sea. Outdoor cafes and coffee and many serve up what seems to be the national drink yearround—white port wine and tonic. Portugal’s unofficial libation is Ginjinha, a thick, sweet liqueur made from sour cherries and sipped from a chocolate shot glass. And if the sardine is lionized, cod is the
NAVIGATING PORTUGAL Atop your ‘don’t miss’ list is the Sao Jorge Castle, a majestic Moorish fortified citadel sitting high above central Lisbon, built in the 11th century, partially destroyed and restored several times. (Lisbon is sprinkled with live archeological digs for latter day explorers). Celebrating its past is the 171 ft. high Monument to Discoveries shaped like a ship’s prow, located on the Tagus River shoreline. Lisbon is filled with museums that cover the cultural waterfront. Some are quirky such as the Museu da Farmacia, a pharmacy museum, the Museum Nactional dos Coches, touted as housing the world’s largest collection of horse-drawn carriages and coaches. A must-see is the new Museum for Art, Architecture and Technology which itself is an architectural thrill. Nactional de Arte Antiga, Portugal’s fine art gallery, is a wonder for wanderers. For me, the Museu do Ar or Air Museum of Portugal in nearby Sintra was the most riveting where thE “dream of flight” started with a winged suit donned by a doctor in 1540. He crashed. But the collection of commercial and military aircraft is nostalgic and uplifting. Lisbon has its share of luxury hotels at four-star prices including the Hotel Britania, Eurostars Das Letras, Intercontinental and the Corinthia. But I found the Dom Pedro Lisboa, a four-and-half-star jewel, to be virtually perfect for under $150 a night. And that included a not quite but close Las Vegas style breakfast buffet. Rooms are spacious, staff is gracious, Internet is fast and the location is central. Guests are mostly Europeans, on holiday or doing business, and mercifully, no conventioneers. Financially supported by the community, WEDU offers a wealth of award-winning multi-media platforms including television programming, WEDU.org, various social media platforms, a monthly member magazine, educational outreach and selected special events. One such event is the WEDU “Be More Awards”. Want to know why we live in a great American community? WEDU and all of the “Be More” award sponsors and award winners are one very big, real and thoughtful reason.
