From The Publisher May/June 2017
Dear Reader, This is it! Our Health and Wellness issue. We have several unique and interesting features that mark this publication as special and worth keeping. First, let me introduce Sharon Fekete (also known as thedoctorwhisperer.com). Sharon joins us as our “Health and Wellness” Editor, where she has the responsibility of keeping up with the health and wellness of our community. Sharon’s unique perspective has led her to understand not only the doctor-medical-treatment aspect of health care, but also the many ways we all can live a healthier and happier lifestyle. Always positive, Sharon’s input will focus on various information, including latest trends and events. Her columns will appear every month and even more frequently on our website duPontRegistryTampaBay.com. Stay close to us on this part of your life, and you will feel better. I am absolutely delighted to make sure that you read about our innovative way to assure good health while traveling. Right smack in the forefront of the new Tampa Wellness District (courtesy of Jeff Vinik and his visionary team) is the Marriott Waterside Hotel and its limited allocation of “Stay Well” rooms. The Delos companies, leaders in wellness around the world, have pioneered these accommodations to provide a healthier experience when traveling. Tampa’s Marriott Waterside is leading the hotel industry in this area and it is right here in our backyard. Be sure to stay tuned for much, much more on Stay Well environments for travel, work, home and community. I promise to keep you informed on the Tampa Bay Wellness district as its extraordinary future unfolds right before us. There are numerous other articles regarding yours’, ours’, and our lives’ health and wellness: the Nutrition Factory with all kinds of natural food, shakes and cold press juices; some gadgets to help you track your fitness regimes; Spas that feature healthy nutrient-rich treatments; and the latest trends in group training in one article which we compared to HIIT workouts. When you need a break, go to our fashion pages where we display some Publisher’s Picks that include the very comfortable Piloti Carpione Luxury Boots (I have a pair!) and the PG Bugatti Bike – I don’t have one, but I would look good if I did! I have to put in one pitch here for a personal favorite: If you live near or travel through Belleair and Belleair Bluffs, you simply MUST stop at Belleair Coffee (100 Indian Rocks Road). Chief Coffee Connoisseur, Chris Whalen, offers an excellent selection of craft coffees with Pastry Chef, Linda Carroll’s gluten-free and Paleo options. Every time I stop by early in the morning, my day starts out on the right foot. How one woman used apps and a wearable tracker to reshape her body

By: Megan Padilla hen Alexandra Wawryn determined to return to her pre-baby body after her second daughter had turned 2, she knew that she had to cut calories, “and not eat crappy food. But her knowledge stopped there. Wawryn turned to a popular app called My Fitness Pal. With more than half a million reviews since it was launched in 2005, the free smartphone app is the most popular gateway tool to weight loss. “Initially, said Wawryn, “I set a goal and cut my calories, tracking them in the app, which is really user-friendly. She points to tools like being able to scan barcodes to extract the nutritional information and also the customizing options for go-to meals so you only have to input all of the components once. “That’s what I did for the first six months, just focused on calories, she said. “Once I got to my goal weight, then I wanted to know more about toning, and that led me to learning about macro nutrients. Two-and-a-half-years later, not only does Wawryn have a lean, strong body, but she’s also tuned in to it, using apps and a fitbit to inform her on a day-to-day basis how to tailor her diet and exercise to balance feeling good with continued results in shaping her body. To do that, she focuses on tracking macros, short for macronutrients, so she knows exactly how many and what ratio of carbohydrates, fat and protein she’s consuming and if they align with her goals. “You need all three of those things to get the result you want to achieve – say building muscle which requires more protein -- is the combination of macros, she explains. “I’d notice that `oh, I’ve eaten too much fat today,’ avocado or coconut oil, so I need to cut back tomorrow; or not enough protein, so I need to eat more chicken or make a protein shake. Another app Wawryn uses is BodySpace, an app from bodybuilding.com. Though the website is targeted to weight lifters, Wawryn uses the app to help her find workouts via the exercise data base that’s built with plenty of filters to customize your workout from day to day. “I can program if I want to work on upper-body strength training, say specifically on shoulders, and that I want to use certain equipment. It even gives plenty of ideas for working out at home. Wawryn finds the app helps keep her from getting bored. “Your body gets used to routine, so you have to change it up, she says. She’s also a fan of the community aspect of the app. Like other social media platforms, you can follow others, post images and results, share workouts and stay inspired. The final tool she’s added is a Fitbit Charge 2 – a wrist model activity tracker that includes a heart-rate monitor. “When I got to the point where I am at, I realized that I also needed to track my heart rate which informs my fat-burning level. Wawryn is looking to stay out of the fat-burning zone and focus on muscle-building instead. “I want to build muscle and not burn it. “When I look at the whole picture, I can make changes to my behavior from one day to the next, she says. When Wawryn began her journey, her only goal was to lose weight. But with her technology toolbox of free smartphone apps and a relatively low-priced activity tracker, she has taken her fitness to a new level and set herself solidly on a path for lifelong good health. By: Megan Padilla o it alone or sweat with others? Joining a gym is no longer your only option for indoor fitness. Today, an effusion of membership-based, group-training studios are popping up, giving Tampa Bay residents unlimited options for getting in shape, losing weight and improving their health. There’s the cardio, strength-training, heart-rate monitored, fullbody workout at Orangetheory Fitness that guarantees weight loss. Pure Barre is a prescribed order of anaerobic exercises switched up from class to class, set to engaging music, that helps women tone arms, abs, glutes and thighs. Jazzercise is a nearly 50-year-old model of easy-to-learn dance routines set to top-40 music that delivers overall fitness, toning and fun. Whether an elite athlete seeking a training boost or a first-time mom-to-be who is better managing her pregnancy through exercise, there is one common thread that keeps them all coming back to class. Community. Having a place to go where everybody knows your name – and, holds you accountable. You’ve likely seen those orange-painted bicycles chained to posts around town. They mean that an Orangetheory Fitness is nearby. Named for the heart-rate zone associated with metabolic burn, Orangetheory Fitness now has 12 studios in the Tampa Bay area. Head coach Arielle Bondura is the face of Orangetheory Fitness New Tampa and her energy and passion for the workout and her members is contagious. Bondura describes the class as a one-hour, full-body workout divided between interval cardio and strength training, matched to high-energy music. Each student wears a heart-rate monitor that displays your real-time heart-rate on a screen under your name. The coach uses the board to tailor the workout to each person – pushing some, gently pulling others back. Says Bondura, “There is a level for everybody, those who have never worked out or Olympic level athletes. We fit your level within our product.” The goal is to spend a total of 12 minutes in the orange or red heart-rate zone, ensuring a higher calorie-burning rate for the next 36 hours. Bondura says it’s easy for her to stay motivated. “It’s a platform for me to do everything I love to do. I have a group of people I get to fulfill and inspire, allowing me to work with so many different people with different levels of fitness. It forces me to continually learn and educate others, making me a better trainer.” She’s also hooked by the sense of community. “All my members are family,” she says. “We have our own Facebook page.” A familiar face in Tampa’s health and wellness community is Lauren Chamberlain who hosts a fitness segment every Tuesday with WFLA News Channel 8, yet another extension of her passion for helping others achieve their fitness goals and embrace positivity. Along with Ellie McComb, Chamberlain owns three Pure Barre
G
studios in Tampa, St. Pete and Clearwater, a career path that was set in motion the moment she took her first class in 2011. “I was hooked,” said Chamberlain. “It made me feel empowered and positive, and I loved the sense of community that the studio brought.” A Pure Barre class is very hands-on, Chamberlain explains. The class starts with core work and weights in the center of the studio and then moves to the barres, used for stability and resistance, for segments focused on thighs and the seat, then more core work. “A teacher stands in the front and leads the entire workout, but is constantly applying hands-on corrections to make sure each person is getting the most out of the class.” Workouts change from class to class so you don’t get bored and your body never gets used to it. One Pure Barre loyalist is Madison Hauenstein, executive director of ARC Tampa Bay Foundation. Her addiction to the formatted class wasn’t immediate. For starters, she didn’t like to exercise, and definitely not in a group. But it was hot outside and there was AC indoors. And she’d bought a one-month pass so she kept going. “By the fifth class or so I was hooked. I developed a group of friends I looked forward to seeing each class, and they looked forward to seeing me. And they hold me accountable. This was a total 180 for me,” she said. Two years later, she’s taken over 250 classes – a milestone she hit when she was eight months pregnant. She credits fitness as part of her daily routine for helping ease her through her pregnancy. “I exercised the entire time,” she said. “The teachers worked with me to adapt movements so that I could do them.” She was even in class on her due date. Women like Hauenstein are why Chamberlain just becomes more passionate about her business. “I’ve seen women change their bodies, lose 50 pounds, and leave all their problems –health, relationships, finances – at the door to focus on themselves,” said Chamberlain. “I get the greatest satisfaction seeing people achieve their fitness goals and watching their confidence, demeanor and attitude change.” Another group class that draws mostly women is Jazzercise. Don’t dismiss it as a headband-and-leg-warmer workout belonging to your grandmother (who very well may have been, and continues to be, a student) since Jazzercise was launched in 1969 and its founder Judy Meisner still teaches classes and choreographs routines. Fourth-grade teacher at Bellamy Elementary School in Tampa, Sophia Hubbard, owns Jazzercise Fitness Center Carrollwood, a franchise she won after coming out on top of a 2013 reality television show called Be the Boss. Hubbard was no newbie to the one-hour dance exercise class, which she’d discovered in 1996 at a time when she was severely obese. “What kept me going and loving it is the camaraderie and friendships that go with it,” she said. Continue on the next page.

dR Health Devotees of Jazzercise range from their 20s to 80s. This year, Jazzercise is promoting a Girl Force campaign and welcomes young women ages 16-21 to come to classes for free. New routines are constantly introduced to pop music often heard in class before it hits Top 40 status. One member, Susan Moynihan has stuck with Jazzercise specifically because of the music. Says Moynihan, “I cannot exercise without good music. When I would set up my own mix tapes, I’d get bored quickly. I’m always surprised at Jazzercise, and if I don’t like the song, it’s over in 3 minutes. When a fun song comes on, everyone gets into it.” She also credits the lack of mirrors (“so I’m not in competition with myself ”), and that she sweats more than she does in any other form of exercise. “I like it so much,” says Moynihan, “that I’ve turned three people on to it!” Hubbard emphasized that Jazzercise is constantly evolving, responding to changes in the fitness industry and incorporating benefits from other forms such as yoga and pilates. “As we improve and learn, we share it,” says Hubbard. “People think we are wimpy, but we’re really strong.” No matter how fit you are, or aren’t, or where you are on your weigh-loss journey, there’s a place for you in any of these group

A new prescription for the future of health care.
People are defined by their humanity. They think and feel, laugh and cry. And sometimes they get sick. When they do, they turn to the health care system to make them better. But instead of being defined by their humanity, they’re defined by their illness. They’re patients first and people a distant second. But BayCare is taking aim at
the status quo. We’re shaking the health care foundation and working to create a different model. One whose foundation rests on respecting each patient’s humanity and on providing the highest quality medical care. This new prescription is just what the doctor ordered. And it’s making it a lot easier to swallow.

By: Sharon Fekete, Health & Wellness Editor he latest spa retreat to delight us in Clearwater Beach is located inside the plush Wyndham Grand. Pallavi, meaning new leaf, is an exceptional spa that encourages and inspires new beginnings. Behind the logo stands an inspirational leader and philanthropic pillar of our community, Dr. Pallavi Patel. As a Pediatrician, Dr. Patel has led families through many transformations and now her footprints will also linger within this wellness spa.

duPont REGISTRYTM spoke with Dr. Sheetal Patel Dr. Sheetal Patel heads the family office, including the family charitable foundation that focuses on health, wellness and education. “This beautiful new hotel will be an asset to the Tampa Bay community for years to come and we have put our family stamp here in many little ways...at the Pallavi Spa, our attention to health and wellness is the focus. We encourage you to come relax and rejuvenate- to turn over your own ‘new leaf ’.” duPont REGISTRY sat down with Pallavi’s spa director, Anaelys Napoles. “There is a specific infusion of health and wellness throughout the spa’s meticulous design. The very best products from the UK (ELEMIS) have been hand selected to obtain maximum desired results. Pallavi encourages a holistic approach throughout and includes the poultice massage, inspired from the healing practices of India. Techniques focused on detoxification, hydration, mood balancing and stress relief will all encourage a desire to achieve health optimization.” When we give ourselves a chance to disengage from the stress of life and rid our body of toxins, we can begin to rejuvenate our spirit. There are multiple studies today that prove the significant impact on your health when we practice self-care. This luxurious spa was built with that in mind, along with the bonus of a respected physician’s insight on how we can all experience wellness. Pallavi Spa offers us a chance to slow down and consider that it’s never too late to turn over a new leaf. G

ometimes the skin we are in requires more than a routine cleaning regime to keep it soothed, smooth and looking its best. Skin is susceptible to internal and external elements that can attack it and impact it in many ways. Eating a balanced diet, getting adequate sleep and staying hydrated are some of the more manageable ways to keep skin healthy. Other factors, like aging, stress, sun exposure, climate, pollution, genetics and hormones, are not so easily addressed. Fortunately, new products and treatments featuring natural ingredients that fortify and nourish skin and provide relief from redness, roughness, dryness and damage are becoming increasingly available throughout the Tampa Bay area. Last fall, the first Aesop signature store in Tampa opened at Oxford Exchange, joining Miami as Florida’s sole retail locations for this luxury skin line launched in Melbourne, Australia in 1987. Aesop skin, body and hair products feature plant-based and laboratory-made ingredients to create anti-oxidant rich products that can repair and protect surface skin cells. Leading spas throughout Tampa Bay are also taking a more nutrient-based approach to their treatments to better meet the demands of discerning clients. Superfoods, organic and botanical ingredients and elements indigenous to the sea are among the healthier alternatives available for achieving results. Pallavi, the Tampa Bay area’s newest luxury spa spanning more than 5,000 square feet, opened in January at the Wyndham Grand Hotel on Clearwater Beach. The name means “new leaf ” and Pallavi’s treatments deliver on that promise with the help of its exclusive Elemis product line. Spa guests are good to “glow” following the Superfood Pro-Radiance skin care treatment that sloughs off dull cells using superfoods to energize and detoxify skin leaving it pumped up, plumped up and beaming. Acknowledging “what is good for the body is good for the skin,” the line’s highly concentrated Superfood Facial Oil features a blend of broccoli, flax seed, daikon radish and macadamia nut oils, to name a few of its nine key ingredients. This integration of science and nature into its signature treatments and innovative techniques enables Pallavi’s spa staff to improve the appearance, texture and elasticity of skin. “It is no secret that spas are no longer only about only pampering. The global wellness trend is affecting spas by transitioning them away from the pampering concept,” said Anaelys Napoles, Pallavi spa director. “Consumers more and more are looking for results and we really focused on delivering an experience that is complete, unique and, at the same time, transformational and meaningful. “Beautiful skin is healthy skin. Using nutrient-rich products while following a nutrient-rich diet will improve skin function and create skin that is radiant, hydrated and lit up with good health,” Napoles added.
By: Mary Lou Janson The concept of fresh-is-best when it comes to spa treatment ingredients is fully embraced by Spa Evangeline at The Epicurean Hotel in South Tampa. Fresh cut herbs grown on the hotel’s rooftop terrace are featured in the “Bask in the Garden Beauty” spa service that can be customized for a full body treatment with concentration on hands and feet. This bliss for the body begins with a citrus grass sea salt scrub followed by a skin-enriching massage, courtesy of an agave nectar that infuses skin with anti-aging extracts, imparts silkiness and softness and restores helpful hydration. “Everyone is more geared toward good health these days, and these ingredients are healthier for you. When you select a high-end spa, you base that selection on knowing they use high-end products that are beneficial for your skin,” said Sheen Mahmud, director of Spa Evangeline. “Everything we introduce is food- or nutrientrelated and features high-end ingredients, whether it is for facials, manicures, pedicures or massages.” A new spa menu that debuted at St. Pete Beach’s Spa Oceana at The Don CeSar last fall draws inspiration from iconic oceans and the healthy ingredients and healing powers they represent. From the mind body connection embodied by the Indian Ocean to the tropical florals associated with the Pacific Ocean, treatments are designed to transport spa guests through the use of native flowers, grasses, fruits and massage techniques specific to various regions “The industry is going to a place where the main focus is nutrition internally and externally,” said Rianon Cepriano, Spa Oceana director. Among the recent treatments she developed with the spa staff, is a South Seas Pearl Radiance Facial that uses properties of bamboo, mango, guava, coconut oil and monoi, made from Tahitian gardenia petals, to fortify and firm the skin pre-massage. The final phase, and finishing touch, is a facial mask made from crushed pearls. “Your skin is your biggest organ. It is responsible for keeping harmful elements out as well as allowing what’s beneficial to your skin in,” Cepriano added. Oceana’s signature spa treatments even combine cultural elements to enhance the effects and enable guests to fully relax and enjoy the experience. “We have Tibetan singing bowls to help balance the body’s energies before using a dry brush to exfoliate the skin. Then a product with olive, avocado and green tea oil is applied and the guest is wrapped to allow those oils to hydrate the skin. While cocooned in the wrap, we massage their scalp. It’s a guided meditation using nutrient rich ingredients.” Safety Harbor Resort and Spa, known worldwide for the healing benefits of its natural mineral spring water, presents spa treatments using powerful plant and marine elements like caviar, lavender, blue-green algae and ginger, from its Kerstin Florian signature skin care line.“We offer a number of services utilizing these organic ingredients, including our Lavender Dreams body treatment, Ginger Renewal body treatment, Chamomile scrub, Marine Therapy Continue on the next page.

dR Health Detox and Signature Caviar facial,” said Lisa Margarone, director of marketing. “The organic products, coupled with the water from Florida’s only natural mineral springs, Espiritu Santo Springs, is what sets our spa treatments apart. Our spring water is at the heart of these beneficial treatments.” Rock Spa at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Tampa features oils sourced from exotic locations, like dilo and sikeci nuts, blended with honey and fresh citrus for a full body moisturizing application as well as products made with proven cosmeceutical and medical-grade ingredients, active botanicals and marine extracts. “As an industry leader, we strive to follow all the latest breakthroughs and advancements in spa products and services. We currently have several high-end products that boast the latest in organic elements, like our newest skincare line, Collins, and their successful vitamin C-based products,” said Angela Hayes, Rock Spa manager. Boosting the nutritional profiles of spa services is simply a better way to help the body heal, making that approach a more appealing alternative to the less natural methods used in the past. “For the health conscious guests, these treatments have been increasingly popular,” Hayes added.G

High Intensity Training Takes on a New Vibe
G
roup exercise is drastically different today. It is more creative, more science-driven and more effective at creating lean bodies. In particular, the concept of High Intensity Interval Training has revolutionized fitness as local gyms grab the technique and mold it into their own idea of what it means to train powerfully. Traditional HIIT workouts are short, intense sessions followed by limited rest. They are famous for high calorie burn and fat trimming capabilities. Working out exceptionally hard for short bursts of time forces the body to actively recover quicker – the heart and muscles adapt much faster when repeatedly pushed from an extreme active state to recovery and back again. That, in turn, allows individuals to see vast improvements in their physical health without the time commitment of an endurance athlete or a dedicated gym rat. At Combat Performance & Fitness in St. Petersburg, owner Pete

Davidsmeier’s motto is “Fight, Live Fit, Be Human.” His gym features old school boxing rings, heavy weight punching bags and iron weights mixed with contemporary NFL Combine-style equipment. His core business is training MMA fighters, boxers and martial arts competitors. However, he’s adapted the traditional three to five minute match methodology for his Hybrid Cardio and Kickboxing classes, which attract the everyday exercise enthusiast. Clients slam heavy ropes, quickstep through agility ladders, and flip 200-pound tires; rotating every 30 seconds between an aerobic pace activity and an explosive anaerobic weight-based movement with rests only between station switches. Today’s High Intensity Interval Training sessions rely heavily on research conducted by professional sport groups on athletic performance, Davidsmeier says. “I’m trying to combat the desk job, being caught in a cubicle and
By: Catherine Mitseas driving all day. These are functional movements within an intense cardio work out…There’s no reason someone can’t be pushed to another level,” he explains. At Camp Tampa in South Tampa, three studios combine to take on a world of new training styles. Designed to resemble a well-loved summer camp, the center offers circuit training, cycling and yoga, providing more than 80 classes weekly. Co-founder in 2015 by Jamie Lanza and Jen Azzeralli and a part of the Ciccio Restaurant Group, Camp Tampa combines strong business acumen with a family commitment to customer service. The result is an exceptionally detail focused organization. The Camp’s relaxed fun atmosphere belies the fact that every instructor receives six months of training before hitting the floor and each session is choreographed down to the last musical beat. Instructors and classes must be consistently exceptional, Lanza explains. In the circuit training room, the high-intensity training method is applied in a group setting as 24 people rotate between Woodwaycurved, self-propelled (no electricity!) treadmills and a full line of strength training equipment. Led by an instructor with a carefully crafted road map, the athletes train for five to eight minutes at each station, switching with only a 1-minute rest. A colored light system identifies intensity levels, and a 42-inch subwoofer coupled with ceiling-embedded speakers, imbue the studio with a crazy energy that makes even training this hard, fun. Despite the playful approach, that high low, intensity results in high calorie burn. Although every physique is different, Lanza estimate’s guests burn on average 600 to 800 calories per session. That’s quite a number in anyone’s book.

Keeping Kids Mentally Fit arenting is often a combination of joys and challenges, but there can be times when a child or teen has difficulties caused by factors outside of what they or their parents can handle alone. In those instances, there’s help and hope in consulting an expert. For Tampa Bay families, local child and adolescent psychiatrist Jacqueline Hubbard, M.D., ABPN, opened a self-run private practice in Clearwater in August 2016. Her passion for her work is inspiring. “I love my job—it’s exciting to help children and their families because you often see life-changing improvements,” says Dr. Hubbard. “There’s a huge need for mental health services and I wanted to eliminate the stigma of seeking treatment and normalize that experience for families who are concerned about their child's behavior changes.” Dr. Hubbard is dual-board certified in general psychiatry and in child and adolescent psychiatry. Her educational background includes awards for teaching, serving as Chief Resident of the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Fellowship Program at USF, and extensive training at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital as well as the Rothman Center for Pediatric Neuropsychiatry. Her practice is all about personalized, compassionate care, handled directly by her. Dr. Hubbard sees children of any age and helps formulate individual treatment plans that can involve, with the family's approval, other professionals including primary care providers, therapists (occupational, ABA, speech), and school staff. Her practice is not simply about prescribing medication, and her appointments do not just involve the child; they can also include educating family members or caregivers, and teaching them behavior modification strategies and parenting skills. She gives families ample time, with appointments that are often much longer than traditional practices, and they normally include separate time for the patient individually and the family together. Dr. Hubbard can also conduct virtual 'telepsychiatry' appointments via a secure computer video chat for patients throughout the state of Florida. Dr. Hubbard treats many child and adolescent mental health issues, including attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, anxiety disorders including OCD, autism spectrum disorder, depressive disorders, binge eating disorder and mental health assistance for LGBTQ patients. Today, diagnostic tools are better, and therapeutic approaches based on evidence, along with medications (if necessary), can be individually tailored to help children get well and stay resilient. What are common warning signs? Dr. Hubbard says, "Look for a change in their functioning. This could mean not interacting as much with peers or family, withdrawing socially, as well as a decline in school performance. Other warning signs are kids overeating or not eating enough, losing weight or falling off the growth curve, persistent boredom, irritability, anger, increased defiance, unexplained crying episodes, difficulty concentrating, frequent

school absences and even complaints of physical illnesses and stomach aches." What can parents do to support good mental health in their kids? "Help them gain confidence, teach them how to identify and cope with specific emotions, praise them for specific achievements, focus on your child’s best qualities/strengths, teach them how to set personal goals, empower kids to make decisions and learn how to handle situations effectively on their own, and roll with life’s little setbacks,” says Dr. Hubbard. She recommends parents consult the website resources on American Academy for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry www.aacap.org as a great resource.

How to “Stay Well” During Travel
A NEW STANDARD IN WELLNESS HOSPITALITY...
Photos courtesy of Tampa Marriott Waterside
42
www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
By: Sharon Fekete, Health and Wellness Editor raveling and wellness are not terms we associate when flying to the next business conference, tourist destination or family reunion. We cringe to think about the germs floating around the plane and the potential for uncomfortable accommodations in a noisy hotel. What if I told you there was a new standard in wellness hospitality right here in Tampa Bay? Stay Well rooms are the first hint of the vision created by Jeff Vinik and his SPP team for the upcoming Tampa Bay wellness district. In April of 2016, the Tampa Marriott Waterside, dedicated the 15th floor to Stay Well rooms. These 34 guest rooms were designed to introduce a health-conscious-built environment along with a wellness-based component when you travel.
T
duPont REGISTRYTM sat down with Michele Palmer, Marketing Manager for Marriott International Along with Jeff Vinik, SPP and Delos, we want to slowly integrate wellness options into the hotel itself, in our attempts to launch the upcoming wellness district. There are a lot of moving parts and the hotel is one tiny piece of the entire district. We partnered with Delos to provide an app for our guests to locate healthy restaurants, biking trails and running trails in the vicinity. Currently, we are working with Delos and our food and beverage team to put Stay Well icons on our menus to designate healthy options for guests that stay in our Stay Well rooms. In an effort to expand social consciousness to healthy living, Tampa Marriottt Waterside, has also partnered with Urban Kai www.urbankai.com. Urban Kai focuses on fitness, well-being, yoga, AND stand-up paddle boarding! The collaborative plan is to do a clean up on a stand-up paddleboard in exchange for donations to Surf Rider www.surfrider.org. Stay Well rooms offer the following features: •State of the art air purification system that reduces allergens and toxins invisible to the human eye. •Circadian mood lighting that is engineered to emulate the color of natural outdoor light to help enhance sleep quality, energy levels and productivity. •Long-wave night lighting to allow guests to safely navigate at night while minimizing sleep disruption. •Stay Well mattresses, which support the back. •Dawn-simulator to wake guests gradually and gently with increasing levels of music or natural sound, coupled with gradually increasing light. •Aromatherapy to improve the ambience of the room. •Vitamin C-infused shower system that neutralizes the effect of chlorine, known to dry the skin and hair.
Stay Well rooms offer MORE than built-in features: •Healthy menu selections •Allergy-friendly cleaning processes •Wellness programs & meditation options via a mobile app •Complimentary access to Cleveland Clinic’s wellness program for sleep, stress and nutrition management If you are to understand Stay Well, we need to introduce you to Delos. www.delos.com They are the pioneers of ‘Wellness Real Estate, and have introduced preventative medical intentions within the built environment. Delos inspired Stay Well to set a new standard in wellness hospitality. Their hope for revolutionizing our hotel experience comes with reducing exposure to germs and allergens, minimizing stress and fatigue and introducing technological advances within their app to maximize your experience. On a personal note, I experienced a Stay Well room last September prior to joining a panel discussion for the annual Working Women of Tampa Bay Conference. It was held at the Straz Center, just minutes away from the Tampa Waterside Marriottt. I was honestly looking for ANY excuse to experience this magical new standard in wellness hospitality, since I am a HUGE advocate of anything surrounding our upcoming wellness district. When presented with the honor to speak in front of 300 female businesswomen, I NEEDED a good nights sleep so I booked myself into a Stay Well room! I woke up refreshed to circadian lighting, cleaned up with the vitamin-infused showerhead, and inhaled the pleasing scents of aromatherapy. My Christmas list now consists of products offered from the Stay Well Shop. I am the proud owner of a vitamin-infused showerhead, and the Stay Well app is on my phone. Not sure if my night in the room improved the panel discussion, but I DO know I walked on stage, stress free and elated about my experience. Stay Well is an exceptional option for travelers with a minimal increase in cost. The ability to inject a holistic approach to your hotel stay is exciting to say the least! Knowing that each feature is based in medical research and technological advancements to help with mind, body and environment is revolutionary. This partnership with SPP, Delos Living and the Tampa Waterside Marriottt, is a welcomed offering for this fan of preventative health. I am bursting with excitement about the upcoming wellness district in Tampa Bay, and highly recommend you experience this new standard in wellness hospitality. By: Melinda Orlando he summer months in Tampa Bay are beautiful and relaxing, but they can be hard to enjoy with Florida’s humidity, wind, rain, mosquito and bug population, and more. If only there was a complete solution so you could enjoy your outdoor space in comfort all year-round. Thankfully, Al and Deborah Erturk founded A-NIKS in 2004, primarily as a licensed and insured pest-control company. They have expanded the business to specialize in mosquito, no-see-um and spider misting; patio cooling and heating systems; retractable awnings and screens and many other enclosure options, all designed to give their clients complete outdoor-comfort solutions in a one-stop shop. We caught up with Al to give us a peek inside the business, as well as reveal some of the top trends he sees within the outdoor space for both homeowners and business owners.
T
normally place a ceiling fan, so layout and design is pretty simple. In order to achieve cooling from this height, we redesigned our patented port to create quicker evaporation, so that literally within 3’ to 4’ of the Turbocool port, you are receiving a cool breeze with no wetness. Our new TurboCool motors provide two significant benefits: They are 30 percent more powerful than the previous motor, so they will allow the air from the units to flow much farther, and they are lowvoltage controlled through a potentiometer and allow for a truly soft quiet breeze when you just want to move some air around to give some motion, or the capability to provide high-powered cooling for large outdoor spaces, when the situation calls for it. With all these advancements, the TurboCool system offer so many installation, function and aesthetic options, it truly is amazing, great cooling with beautiful looks for the outdoors.
How did your business start and grow? The company was founded in 2004. This July, will be our 13-year anniversary. We started as a mosquito and pest control company, and during the course of the first five years, we realized that while mosquito, no-see-um and spider control was important and helped enhanced outdoor space, there were other things that hindered homeowner’s ability to use the outdoors.
So many homeowners go with the birdcage around the pool. Do you offer an alternative? No one wants to live in a cage. Our retractable screens can be installed on any patio or even screen enclosure, allowing the backyard to open up when desired and be protected from the mosquitoes when needed. Also, the retractable roofs, retractable awnings and louvered roofs we offer can be used to create shaded, dry places in and around your screen enclosure. It allows you to extend your outdoor square footage. Homes that have little to no lanai really benefit from this because you add an incredible amount of outdoor space so you can enjoy the Florida lifestyle. I did it to my own home actually. I didn’t have a lanai, so I added a retractable roof, with retractable screens on the back of my home. It is cool, shaded and protected from the elements and bugs.
What are some of those “other things”? Heat is a big one. As hot and humid as our summers can be, we would talk to people about our mosquito control, but they’d say “It’s just too hot to go outside.” Cooling systems became a huge opportunity for us, and we are now the premiere outdoor cooling company throughout Florida and the country, featuring our own patent-pending, manufactured right here in Tampa Bay, TurboCool systems. And with recent advancements, we have upgraded the way we install and recess into the outdoor ceiling with these systems, when homes are under construction. Where would we see your work? You’ll find our cooling systems and other products at top restaurants and hotels: TradeWinds Resort, Frenchy’s Group, AVA restaurant, Shephard’s on Clearwater Beach, Daily Eats, Fresh Kitchen and the rest of the Ciccio Restaurant Group and the new Millers Ale House. Since its introduction, we’ve made eight significant advancements in the product. Our latest generation is the “TurboCool 8.0.” What is one of the advancements? I’ll give you four major advancements in the last two years. In 2015 we introduced the world’s first, patent-pending combined heat and cooling solution for the outdoors in one system. We refer to it is “TurboCool with Heat.” In 2016, we introduced our new patentpending “CF” series, which is a replacement for ceiling fans, only they actually cool the outdoors and come with some great options like heating and lighting. They would be installed where you would
How does a homeowner get started? Everyone starts at a different point. In most cases, it is best to plan many of these features right into the home when in the planning and construction stage. However, most of our customers’ homes are existing, so we have products that provide for a beautiful retrofit installation as well. Then, there are different priorities or elemental challenges in one’s outdoor living space, so we have different products for different needs and priorities. We also have a good, better, best in all our products. This way we can try to meet the various needs of cost, performance and features that allow each one of our customers to custom tailor the solution to meet their needs. What do you love most about your company? It is important to have a company that backs up what you chose to buy. We are a family-owned business, and we stand by our products. We install everything with our own employees to ensure the utmost quality and excellent customer service. We create this opportunity to enjoy the backyard and address all the elements that inhibit our outdoor lifestyle. We help you control them to maximize your outdoor space. It’s a unique business model. We give the complete outdoor solution. G

s the aesthetician gently painted my body with a warm, mineral-rich gold mud, I couldn’t help but smile softly as I imagined myself as an Emmy Award preparing for her moment in the spotlight. Fortunately, however, instead of appearing onstage, my golden self remained in the dark, warm Hammam as my mind drifted beyond Emmy images and into a state of deepest relaxation. When it comes to luxurious spa treatments, there is no question that Spa at JW Chicago will have the Midas touch with next month’s (late-JUNE) debut of its decadent 24K Gold ($375) and 24K Gold Luxe ($775) packages. “The new 24K Gold series is the first of its kind at Spa at JW Chicago,” said Marie Parodi, Director of Spa & Fitness, Spa at JW Chicago. “The luxe gold treatments provide a complete detoxification, while also offering an exclusive and extravagant experience where spa-goers are truly treated like royalty.” What may be surprising is that in addition to its sumptuous feel, the use of gold in each of the 24K Gold treatments is in fact beneficial to your skin, too - the gold is known to stimulate skin cells, resulting in an increase in the skin’s firmness and elasticity, while at the same time improving circulation and slowing down the depletion of collagen. The four-hour 24K Gold Luxe Package of sheer pampering bliss begins in the spa’s Hammam, a steam room similar to a Turkish bath, with an 80-minute 24K Gold Body Envelopment with Scalp Massage - an all-over exfoliation using a Moroccanoil Cleanse Bar, followed by the application of the gold mud a la paintbrush before being wrapped into a golden cocoon. While the mud and its minerals hydrate and work their magic, fall into a very deep relaxation during a 25-minute Moroccanoil Scalp Massage. After seemingly floating into the spa’s relaxation room for a brief respite and perhaps a cup of hot tea, it’s then into the aesthetics suite for an 80-minute 24K Gold Collagen Facial. Again, total relaxation envelops you as the aesthetician gently cleanses and moisturizes your face before applying a golden mask, its benefits melting into your skin as your cares continue to melt away. Another stop in the relaxation room, this time with an indulgent plate of sweet treats flaked with 24K Gold, and it’s onto the final stop on your golden journey - an 80-minute Signature Massage. During the massage, the masseuse uses a shea butter-rich Moroccanoil Body Soufflé to help knead away any remaining tension that may somehow linger. If you want all the gold but have less time for pampering, opt instead for the two-and-a-half-hour 24K Gold Package, which includes the 80-minute facial and 80-minute massage and their myriad benefits.
Whoever says diamonds are a girl’s best friend has yet to meet the 24K Gold Package at Spa JW Chicago. Back to Reality It may be hard to return to reality after the complete relaxation experienced during the 24K Gold treatments, but the JW Marriott Chicago does offer even more to keep you on the road to good health. Back at Spa at JW Chicago, the Fit Squad is ready to jumpstart your fitness routine to match your newly rejuvenated spa body. The team of Nike Personal Trainers - including a Lead Nike Pro Master Trainer, an American Ninja Warrior contestant, a certified yoga instructor and a nutritionist - are all at-the-ready to help you be the best you can be. With various group classes and personal training available, not to mention a state-of-the-art fitness center, you’ll easily continue on the road to better health. Healthy living isn’t all work and no play, however, and healthy eating doesn’t have to be bland. Walk about a mile in the Windy City to True Food Kitchen, where you’ll find a seasonal health- and flavor-driven menu featuring nutrient-rich and fresh ingredients. And you can toast all your hard work with a drink, too! Or, if you’d rather not leave the hotel, simply make reservations at The Florentine on the second floor and dive into fresh, seasonal Italian dishes such as antipasti, handmade pasta, or even wood-fired pizza. After all, there’s always the Fit Squad, the fitness center and walking the streets of Chicago to burn off the calories - or another 24K Gold treatment.
“The new 24K Gold series is the first of its kind at Spa at JW Chicago”.

CPGI Breaks Record Making Most Expensive Residential Sale in Tampa Bay oastal Properties Group International recently broke the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) record for the most expensive residential home sale in the Tampa Bay Area by a long shot, at $11.18 million. Century Oaks, the estate at 802 Druid Rd. S., sold for nearly $1 million more than the next priciest property, a Belleair estate that sold for $10.25 million in 2008. No other residential property has come close to this sale price. Century Oaks has had several previous owners, most recently being champion powerboat racer Hugh Fuller, who purchased the home in 1996 from British Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell for $5.5 million. Fuller originally listed the estate for $17.5 million in 2013, but the home failed to sell and subsequently went to auction in 2014 with a minimum starting bid of $8.5 million. Since no sale materialized at that time, even with offers submitted by three bidders, the house, guest house and boat house were all listed separately. On April 4th of this year the new owners closed on the main home and the guest house with the assistance of listing agents Kerryn Ellson and Mary Ann McArthur. Fuller remains the owner of the 2,500-square-foot boat house. “It was very exciting to be part of this sale. It’s the most outstanding property on the west coast of Florida, and it has such a rich history that makes everything involved with the property very interesting,” said McArthur. The listing has been orchestrated by other agencies in the past. A combination of international marketing, timing and CPGI’s expertise lent itself to securing the sale this April to an overseas buyer. “I think the timing was right for both the buyer and seller,” Ellson explained. “The property is worth every penny, based on its size, amenities, exquisitely manicured acreage and the privacy it affords its new owners.” Overlooking Clearwater Harbor, Century Oaks is uniquely positioned on a 50-foot bluff with a reputation of being the highest waterfront elevation on the Eastern seaboard, according to McArthur. The property gets its name from the lush greenery and historic trees that have graced the property for years. "We're seeing a number of properties in Belleair Shore and even Harbor Oaks that sold for over $5 million in the last six to 12 months," said Alex Jansen, a broker at Coastal Properties. "We haven't seen that in some time." G

ith her sister’s coaching and guidance, Dania Perry took up a career in real estate, and when she did, the world of realty met its match. Originally an electrical engineer - precision, accuracy and data were an important part of her work. As a realtor, she brings that experience and dedication to her real estate career—and has been making a critical difference in the lives of her clients ever since. Perry is Century 21’s #1 Realtor in the world in gross commission—a title she’s held for the last five consecutive years. She’s also been the company’s #1 Realtor in the United States for the past six years. She was awarded Century 21’s Double Centurion Award her first year in business even though she started her career right at the crux of the 2008 economic downturn. With her commitment to customer service and her data-driven approach, it’s no surprise Perry is one of the most awarded realtors in the Tampa Bay Area. “When someone hires me,” she states, “they get me. I take great personal pride in delivering outstanding service and exceptionally detailed market knowledge. After just an hour of time together, buyers and sellers come away with a high degree of confidence about the real estate marketplace and their homes of interest.” Providing boutique-style service, Perry handles the comprehensive market analysis, marketing and media publications, contract negotiations, and is present for her showings. “I pick up the phone when people call me,” she says, “I know it sounds really simple, but it is so critical . It is important to me for each and every client to feel like he or she is my only client, which is the reason that I take calls at all hours of the day, every day.” She walks clients through every step of the process and has a keen understanding of the emotional—and financial—undertaking buying or selling a home can be.
W
What’s more, Perry provides her clients with clarity and confidence thanks to her data-driven background. “I always have my spreadsheets handy,” Perry states. Using market data and presenting it in an easily understandable format, Perry personally helps her clients make informed decisions, which garners their trust and brings a sense of ease to the oftenstressful process of buying or selling a home. “My goals are always about the satisfaction and happiness of clients,” Perry says. “Critical to that is my accuracy, attention to detail and trustworthiness - responsibilities I take very seriously..” Perry’s spreadsheet is her staple, and her clients know she is providing them with correct, useful information. “I do everything with a spreadsheet. Even my honeymoon was on a spreadsheet,” she jokes. She also knows the value and appeal of the Tampa Bay area market. “We’re the best kept secret in Florida,” she says, “and quite possibly the best waterfront values in the country.” “We have incredible waterfront property, beautiful gulf beaches and easy access to a highly acclaimed international airport. You match that with the prices of this area and our extensive infrastructure and conveniences, and you’re really in for tremendous value.” For unparalleled service and a unique, analytical approach, look no further than your backyard. Dania Perry is ready to help, with spreadsheet in hand. G

By: Mary Lou Janson friendship first forged on opposing northern high school football fields and basketball courts has been a constant thread throughout the playing days, college years and careers of two Tampa businessmen. Having followed different professional paths that eventually lead them both to Tampa, Michael Youssef, a radiologist and partner with SDI Diagnostic Imaging, and Joseph Galloway, a former NFL wide receiver turned sports broadcaster with ESPN, have taken their friendship to a new level. They formed a business partnership based on their shared passion for healthy foods, good nutrition and, equally critical, delicious dishes. While training off-season at summer sports camps, the athletes turned entrepreneurs discovered mutual interests that sustained their friendship throughout the decades. As Youssef earned a medical degree and Galloway made a name for himself in college and professional sports, both remained dedicated to staying in shape through exercise and healthy eating habits. Noting there were limited dining options available to people who wanted to eat well while eating out, Youssef and Galloway developed their fast, casual concept to deliver delicious flavors and freshly prepared dishes and drinks crafted to pack a powerful nutritional punch. Without any previous experience in the restaurant industry, they used their extensive travel schedules as opportunities to check out groundbreaking techniques and innovative concepts in eating establishments across the country to build their own business model. “It was an invaluable experience. We learned a lot about the industry and best practices while attending what we referred to as ‘restaurant academy’ for a year,” Youssef recalled. The next step was to hire Synergy Restaurant Consultants, industry experts who helped conduct additional research and development as well as test and perfect recipes. The founders of The Nutrition Factory, which opened in February next to a busy Tampa workout facility, have created a new dining concept that combines natural ingredients and nutritionally dense foods to make tasty salads, wraps, bowls and shakes. Customers approach the counter that displays the available readyto-eat delicacies. After ordering their choice of greens, grains, proteins, vegetables, toppings and sauces, the desired dish is assembled right before their eyes. Selections include kale, quinoa, roasted sweet potatoes, grilled black tiger shrimp, bison meatballs, roasted cauliflower and steamed broccoli for the foundation of a wrap, bowl or salad. Toppings range from avocado and Kalamata olives to hummus and hard boiled eggs. Tzatziki, barbecue and cider vinaigrette sauces add a satisfying finish. Each ingredient is carefully selected and sourced. Eggs are from cage-free chickens. Poultry and meats are hormone and antibiotic free. Almond mile and cold pressed juices are made in-house. Everything is made-to-order so that customers can create their
A
own combinations or order from the menu. The nutritional make-up of featured dishes and beverages is calculated to ensure clients enjoy the best combination of vitamins, minerals, proteins, fat and more to benefit their bodies. “If you change the way you eat you can change your lifestyle,” insists Youssef, whose medical background helps him understand how detrimental it can be to eat foods tainted with chemicals and other toxins. “I have seen the end-product of what can happen when you don’t make the right food choices. We both have.” While plans to expand from the original location are certainly a possibility, Youssef insists the focus for now is on fine-turning and improving operations in hopes of positively helping others manage their personal wellbeing and energy levels. “We want people to have choices and to help them make good choices. What you eat affects your health, your mood and how you act around others,” Youssef said. “We hope The Nutrition Factory will impact others in a positive way and help them to enjoy healthy lifestyles.” G Quinoa Breakfast Scramble from The Nutrition Factory Ingredients: 8 ounces prepared quinoa 4 strips thick cut Applewood Bacon; cook, dice and crumble into small pieces 3 ⁄4 ounce (weight) red peppers sliced 1⁄4 inch 3 ⁄4 ounce (weight) red onions sliced 1⁄4 inch 2 ounces (weight) mushrooms 2 cage-free eggs 2 ounces Mozzarella cheese Herb Mix: 1 ⁄2 teaspoon parsley 1 ⁄2 teaspoon cilantro 1 ⁄4 teaspoon oregano Combine and mix in a small mixing bowl to add to the scramble Instructions: Preheat oven to 450 degrees; preheat sheet pan Roast mushrooms for 25 minutes or until well roasted Saute onions and peppers in saute pan sprayed with cooking oil over medium heat Scramble eggs in saute pan sprayed with nonstick spray over medium heat Combine all ingredients, scramble Serves 1

arbeque has been Ray Lampe’s first love since entering his first rib contest in 1982. Before he quit the family trucking business after 25 years to become a full-time pit-master, the Chicago native had spent 15 years testing different barbequing styles, participating in cookout competitions, and shifting his growing interest in barbeque from a serious hobby into a full-time career. Only then did he buy a van in which to haul his smokers, and on which to show off a license plate with “DR BBQ,” the moniker by which he would gain recognition as one of the world’s prime professional pit-masters. He's got top celebrities and chefs on speeddial, and he has written the book on the New American Barbeque—nine of them, to be exact. They include Slow Fire: The Beginner's Guide to Barbecue, Dr. BBQ’s Big-Time Barbecue Cookbook, the official NFL Gameday Cookbook, he penned in collaboration with the National Football League, and his new Big Green Egg Cookbook. Inducted into the BBQ Hall of Fame in 2014, Lampe is routinely seen as a judge on shows like Travel Channel’s American Grilled, FYI Network’s World Food Championships, and the Food Network’s Chopped and Tailgate Warriors with Guy Fieri. He also hosts a cooking segment on Fox Sports Network's “Fishing the Flats,” as well as a monthly “Ask Dr. BBQ” Q&A segment on the BBQ Central Radio Show. He gives online barbecuing tutorials to boot. Lampe will soon be stoking the fire on a new endeavor: as a restaurateur. With partners Suzanne and Roger Perry, owners of the Datz, Dough and Roux restaurants in Tampa, Lampe will bring a

new breed of vibrant, dynamic, even progressive, smoke-basted meat to Dr. BBQ in St. Petersburg's hip Edge District in September 2017. Bringing “new American barbeque" to the Tampa Bay area, the new full-service restaurant will sizzle with barbeque varieties and variations fashioned around Ray’s travels across the country and the many different styles of barbeque he tasted along the way, blended with local St. Pete tastes. The restaurant has a rustic industrial ambiance to complement the cuisine. It features a remarkable selection of bourbon curated by an award winning mixologist along with a creative cocktail program and local beers for patrons wanting spirits along with main event. G

ot Your Average Joe When Christopher Whalen’s dad introduced him to espresso in the 80s, it left a lasting impression. “I've always loved coffee and espresso,” Whalen explains. “When I was 20, my dad worked in Italy for a couple of years, and I was introduced to espresso. I've lived in the Belleair area for many years and have always complained that there wasn't a good craft coffee house around, so when I finally had the time and resources to do it, I set out creating the exact kind of coffee house where I would want to hang out.” And so he did with the opening of Belleair Coffee, a community-focused craft coffee shop in Belleair Bluffs with Pastry Chef Linda Carroll making gluten-free and paleo options, and serving Buddy Brew coffee and TeBella teas. “We make everything on-site under Chef Carroll’s supervision, and we are local people who are very involved in the local community.” By: Melinad Tam Orlando

The building transformed into a light, airy and contemporary design with a tapered stacked-stone entrance feature. Aluminum louvered sun-shades and a protective awning add architectural interest, while a unique metal “topper” and one-of-a-kind metal sunflower sculpture adorns the freshly updated façade. You’ll know you’ve arrived when you see the eye-catching new sign flanked by two lovely travelers palms. Xeriscaped rock gardens and a fountain add a Zen quality to the grounds. Decker Ross Interiors contracted Aude-Smith Architecture to facilitate the design and partnered with Southern Pointe Construction to construct and oversee the renovation. All Metals Custom added the finishing touches with their spectacular metal work. Owner, Suzan Decker Ross, ASID, in conjunction with her talented design team, not only selected the exterior finishes, but created some fresh updates to the interior as well. Tampa Bay Heart Ball On Saturday, April 29, six hundred members of the Tampa Bay area community gathered at the Marriott Waterside for the 2017 Tampa Bay Heart Ball, co-chaired by Allen Brinkman, the CEO of SunTrust, and Julie Brinkman. The American Heart Association’s annual fundraising gala featured matchless live auction lots, including a week stay in Jimmy Buffet’s Key West home – which went for $10,000 – and a 7-day stay at a private villa in Anguilla, which went for a record setting $85,000. Guests learned about the story of congenital heart defect survivor and twotime heart transplant recipient, Garrett Leopold. Garrett’s second heart transplant came from Amanda Pierce, a Plant High school student who tragically passed away in 2013. There wasn’t a dry eye in the room when Garrett shared a special dance with Amanda’s mother, Laurie Pierce. The most successful Tampa Bay Heart Ball to date, the event raised $2 million gross. 1. Supporting Business and Learning orld traveler and philanthropist Kate Tiedemann believes passionately that hard work pays off and that you should do what you love. Her legacy? In 2014, USF St. Petersburg College of Business was named the Kate Tiedemann College of Business, thanks to her generous $10 million gift. As only one of two U.S. business schools named after a woman, this honor pays tribute to the Tampa Bay entrepreneur’s success and ingenuity.
W
Kate Tiedemann The Tiedemann gift supports the education, research and service mission of the college, including a faculty endowment fund and academic research, technology and training, among other initiatives. Wife and former banker Ellen Cotton, donated $1 million to the College as well, and the main entry bears her name (The Ellen Cotton Atrium). USF appealed to Tiedemann for a number of reasons; she felt that the College would be her legacy. Both Tiedemann and USF Business Regional Chancellor Sophia Wisniewska, Ph.D share a special connection and are U.S. immigrants with a deep appreciation for creating opportunities for the next generation. "Kate Tiedemann and Ellen Cotton are role models for young business students who dare to dream," said Chancellor Wisniewska. "So many students will benefit by this stunning, state-of-the-art building, along with the programs and scholarships made possible from these successful and generous women." Tiedemann hoped her donation would give students a jumpstart on their journey to success. “It’s important to find a charity that means something special to you. I always wondered how my life would have turned out if I had gone to college. As it was, I barely finished grammar school before going to work.” In addition to USF, Tiedemann has contributed to Morton Plant
Mease Hospital Foundation, Clearwater’s Free Clinic, hospice, NJ’s Saint Clare’s and other charities. In 2016, Tampa Bay area philanthropists Kate Tiedemann and Ellen Cotton were jointly recognized as Philanthropist of the Year at the Association of Fundraising Professionals Suncoast National Philanthropy Day 2016 luncheon. Together, they have given $11 million to the Kate Tiedemann College of Business. Tiedemann worked her way up in a Tampa Bay corporation from payroll clerk to Chief Financial Officer. Without a high school or college education, and as an immigrant from Germany at 18, Tiedemann’s success had little to do with luck. Tiedemann arrived alone in NY in 1955. She worked for two and a half years as a maid and a cook for former New York Governor Thomas E. Dewey. Eager to acquire administrative skills, Tiedemann landed her first job in the surgical instrument business as an assistant in the New York sales office of Storz Instrument Company, now part of Bausch and Lomb. Following the sale of Storz, Tiedemann and her boss launched an eye, ear, nose and throat division at Edward Weck & Company. Later she co-founded Sparta Instrument Corporation, which sold to Cooper Laboratories. After 15 years in the surgical instrument field, she started Katena Products in the basement of her New Jersey home. Tiedemann worked with ophthalmic surgeons to design and develop eye surgery instruments, growing the company to 1,400 products sold to more than 7,000 surgeons, outpatient surgery centers and hospitals in the United States and 110 countries. The company sold to the Cortec Group in 2009. What advice does Tiedemann give USF business students? “I would tell them to figure out what you want to do, learn about it and go for it. Get involved and fall in love with your work and that makes it fun.”G
