FROM THE PUBLISHER October 2017 Dear Reader, By now the vast majority of you have seen, heard and digested the results of the Monterey/Pebble Beach Auto-Extravaganza. The good news is that there were enough events and cars for sale to keep any auto-enthusiast busy. The bad news is there were more than enough events and cars to keep you busy. There were so many that you had to choose. If you had an idle moment, you could pull up your picnic chair and your sun-shade umbrella on almost any street corner. Within a moment, a classic, luxury or exotic car would drive by and give you plenty to think and talk about. It was, as always, an extra-ordinary time for the enthusiast. Let’s briefly review the auction sales first. Overall, there were six auction companies vying for your attention as a buyer and your consignment as a seller. Each of the auction companies represented their particular niche in the marketplace extremely well. Almost 1,300 vehicles sold at Auction. There is no record of how many “private treaty” sales there were (they are private, after all), but I assure you there were plenty. Approximately, $330 million was spent on new acquisitions on the block or shortly thereafter. Overall, this was a repeat (reasonably) of 2016, showing considerable strength in the higher-end cars and not so much in the lower-end. Supercars were up, down and sideways. Suffice to say it’s a very busy marketplace that favors the educated buyer and seller and for the most part values are reasonably based on condition with a slight edge to the popular marque-of-the-moment. Now, let’s talk about some excitement right here in your favorite magazine—and on your favorite website (www.duPontREGISTRY.com). It’s appropriately called “Fux Fushia” as a tribute to Michael Fux, the businessman/philanthropist/auto-enthusiast, and his one-and-only supercar—in this color! To properly present this very special example of rolling automotive art, McLaren Special Operation (MSO) represented by Mike Flewitt, McLaren Chief Executive Officer, appeared with the new owner on the Concept Lawn at Pebble Beach. A perfect environment for the unveiling of truly bespoke automotive excellence. These are exciting times for the well-heeled collector and the aspirational enthusiast. he man, the myth, the legend, Michael Fux, has ordered and taken delivery of a one-off McLaren 720S that is and will be unlike any other. Ever. In fact, the paint that its wearing? That's named after him – it’s called "Fux Fuchsia." This paint was originally created for Fux by Rolls-Royce, and was developed by McLaren Special Operations. What's more, he will have exclusive rights to use Fux Fuchsia on any other McLaren he purchases. Fux Fuchsia accents can also be found on the wheels and inside the car. The cabin features MSO Bespoke white leather, white stitching, and White Alcantara. Fux’s new McLaren is powered by a new twinturbocharged 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 710 hp and 568 lb-ft of torque. With this much power, along

with a dry weight of just 2,828 lbs, the 720S has a power-to-weight ratio of 0.251 horsepower per 1 lb. With this power and light weight, the 720S will rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds and 0-124 mph in 7.8 seconds. Top speed is stated to be 212 mph. A unique (and driver favorite) feature inside the cockpit is the Folding Driver Display, which can transform to give the driver two different instrument display options. The standard display shows what you’d expect, giving a full readout of instruments, while the “streamlined version” only provides the necessities in a slim strip. This 720S will join Fux's set of commissioned McLarens: 12C in McLaren Orange, 12C Spider in Bespoke Purple and P1 in Bespoke Green. This is without a doubt one of the coolest cars in the world.

EXCALIBUR SPIDER PIRELLI AUTOMATIC SKELETON After entering into an agreement earlier this year with Pirelli, Roger Dubuis unveils some pretty exciting timepieces that incorporate used Pirelli racing tires from winning cars only. Such is the case with this Excalibur Spider Pirelli Automatic Skeleton watch in black and bold yellow – one of the official colors of the Pirelli logo. The 45mm case is black DLC titanium with Black DLC crown overmolded with bold yellow rubber. The automatic skeletonized movement consists of 167 finely finished components and a micro-rotor. The strap is made of a black rubber base with an inlay of winning Pirelli motorsport tire rubber. There is a unique Pirelli tire motif on the inside of the strap. This yellow version is one of a trilogy of three that includes a blue one because the winning tires of the Monaco GP F1 race in 2016 had the blue Pirelli code, and a red one to honor Pirelli’s other official logo color. Focusing on performance and design, the futuristic looking watch deftly brings together lighter weight materials, higher power reserve and a skeletonized flying tourbillon. It is a word that has evolved and taken on all new meaning. While some of the watches in our guide are beautiful, classic timepieces, others are bold and daring sport watches designed to appeal to today’s discerning customer.

W

hen it comes to creating watches for today’s globe-trotting, active consumers, watch brands have become much more innovative not only with designs, but also with high-performance technology and cutting-edge materials perfect for the air, land and sea. In fact, luxury sport watches may well be the fastest growing and most intensely competitive watch category on the global market today as sports of all sorts have become a part of everyday lives for pleasure or profession. Whether it is running, bicycling, swimming, tennis, golf, diving, or some other amazing feat, our active lifestyles cry out for timepieces that can go the distance and weather the elements, all the while performing flawlessly. Watchmakers are regularly teaming with scientists and engineers to find new methods of displaying time, tracking time and measuring time to the tiniest of fractions, and technical engineers are working side by side with designers for flawless case architecture and striking design. Many factors contribute to the making of a sport watch – depending on its ultimate use. Pilot watches, for instance, must be highly legible and easy to read. These typically are larger in size, have bold numerals and offer Super-LumiNova markers and hands for night reading. Often, sport watches have added functions, such as a pulsimeter to measure pulse rate, telemeter for distance and tachymeter for speed. Some even incorporate slide rule bezels for fuel calculations. However, to be a true luxury sport watch, certain factors are a necessity, including optimal depth water resistance, screw-lock crowns, anti-glare crystals, luminescent hands and ratcheted rotating bezels.

Many brands feel that a watch equipped with a chronograph function is key to certain sport watches, and others want their sport timepieces to be COSC-certified chronometers. Chronometers and chronographs are two different things (although a chronograph can also be a certified chronometer). A chronometer is a precision instrument whose movement is built to endure extreme conditions, and has undergone rigorous testing in a special observatory over a period of time (generally 15 days) in several positions and under different conditions before being certified.

“With that in mind, watch brands have turned to new fields such as auto sports and space exploration to find hightech materials that are lighter in weight and highly durable.” Easily one of the most coveted functions in a sport watch is the chronograph –a watch equipped with an additional mechanism to measure continuous or discontinuous intervals of time, from a fraction of a second up to twelve hours depending on the chronograph. Most chronographs are equipped with two pushers – one on each side of the crown. The top button starts and stops the timing function, while the bottom button resets the timing hand to zero to begin again. However, there are many different types of chronographs, including single- or mono-pusher chronographs, wherein all functions operate off of one button. Powered by the automatic CFB 1970 caliber, the flyback chronograph function means that the wearer need only push start and reset when timing an event; there is no need to push stop. HISTORIADOR TRADICION CHAMPAGNE Celebrating its 135th anniversary this year, Swiss brand Cuervo y Sobrinos unveils a remake of a vintage masterpiece that is faithful to the original 1950’s design found in the historical archives in Havana. The new Historiador Tradicion Champagne watch offers stunning classic appeal thanks to the bubble shaped crystal and finely decorated dial. In fact, the dial features a grid-shaped “frappage” motif, with trapezoid markers at 3:00 and 9:00, intermixed with eight raised circular markers and a Cuervo y Sobrinos cartouche at 12:00. Even the brand name on the dial is written in a vintage style script. The 40 mm stainless steel automatic watch offers 42 hours of power reserve and is created in a limited edition of just 882 pieces. The sapphire caseback has a coin center motif with the dates 1882 and 2017 on it, and the crystal is printed with the watch number on it. Approx. $3,850.

ROBUSTO DAY-DATE “CHURCHILL” LIMITED EDITION In his day, Winston Churchill, cigar aficionado, was a loyal customer of the Cuervo y Sobrinos boutique in La Habana. Now, the brand continues to pay homage to the statesman with its fourth edition of the Robusto Churchill collection: Robusto Day-Date Churchill Limited Edition. The three-part case features an innovative crown system inspired by an antique pocket watch – complete with a unique key system almost integrated into the case. The stunning white ceramic dial is lacquered in marbled grey anthracite for a crackle effect – giving the 43mm watch a vintage appeal. Just 200 pieces will be made, all numbered on the dial at 6:00. GRAHAM CHRONOFIGHTER VINTAGE NOSE ART LTD., LILLY Recalling the whimsical and often glamorous illustrations of 1940’s military plane art, Graham brings the pin-up life to the wrist on the dials of its newest Chronofighter Vintage Nose Art Ltd series of watches. There are four pin-up girls being offered, each in a limited edition of 100 pieces. This 44mm stainless steel watch features Lilly prominently on the dial. It was believed that paintings on the fighter planes helped to boost morale, a concept that seems right on target on the wrist. The watch is powered by an automatic chronograph movement, and offers day, date and sub-seconds dial. Lilly is perched at 3:00, as though sitting on the nose of a plane. TECHFRAME FERRARI TOURBILLON CHRONOGRAPH IN TITANIUM This highly creative Hublot Techframe Ferrari Tourbillon Chronograph celebrates the partnership of these two luxury brands, as well as the 70th anniversary of Ferrari. The open-worked case of this timepiece is conceived of at the Ferrari Design Center in the same way they design the cars. This is the first non-automotive item created by the historic brand. Hublot in its Swiss workshops then crafts the case. Combining strength, performance and precision, the new watch is offered in three versions, each with just 70 pieces being made. This Titanium version is lightweight yet durable. The 45mm case is made of micro-blasted titanium and is water resistant to 30 meters. The dial displays time in a decidedly different manner. The mechanical automatic movement, caliber 2824-2, is equipped with a proprietary module featuring another 97 components that enables it to display the time via a red-orange retrograde minute hand and a jumping hour at 6:00 that emulates the RPM gauges. Like the Reservoir logo inspired from the fuel jerrican, the power reserve indicator beneath the jumping hour recalls a fuel gauge. f you slept in on Saturday, July 15, you missed another great show. Clear skies and great vehicles, including two giant trucks, allowed Cars & Coffee July to be a huge success. Global Auto Showroom arrived in a black 2008 Chevy Avalanche inspired by Monster Energy. The supercharged 6.0 V8 easily conquered the high ground at the edge of our west lot. Second place in the height contest was Sheriff Gualtieri’s 5-ton Army truck. Originally built as a 6×6, the rear axle was removed and the bed was shortened. This is called bobbing and it makes the truck much more usable on the street. Our events would not be possible without the support of the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office. AUTOFLUENCE FERRARI INTRODUCES NEW EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM

F

errari has introduced the new Power15 extended warranty program to give new owners additional peace of mind when daily driving their Italian sports car, like the new 488 GTB or 812 Superfast. Before Power15, new Ferrari owners were greeted with a standard factory three-year warranty and a seven-year free maintenance program. During the cars 6th and 12th year, owners can now opt for the new Power15 warranty, which will cover all major components. Power15 will extend the program with the “possibility of covering the vehicle’s main mechanical components, including the engine, gearbox, PTU, suspension and steering, from year 12 right up to year 15,” according to Ferrari. This new coverage will last for 12 months, but can be renewed each year for three years. Power15 will be available for both new and pre-owned Ferraris. Additionally, Ferrari will offer the Power15 extended warranty to cars that do not have the extended warranty or have gaps in their coverage. This coverage will be subject to the car passing “specific technical checks.”

hen Dodge first announced the new Challenger SRT Demon, one of their main talk-

ing points was that the car had been banned by the NHRA. While this is an impressive feat, it’s an unfortunate turn of events for those that wanted to run a Demon at NHRA’s 1/4 drag strips. Thankfully, there’s Hennessey Performance. In a recent letter to Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands at FCA US LLC, John Hennessey assured the company that new Demon owners will have a place to run their cars to their full potential: Hennessey’s own Lonestar Motorsports Park 1/4 mile dragstrip. Hennessey’s only requirement is that Demon owners attend one day of drag racing school with their Demon so that they can become “familiar with burnouts, setting tire pressures and safely operating their vehicles in a dragstrip environment.”

R

olls-Royce has finally pulled back the sheets on the new eighth-generation of their famed Phantom model. The new Phantom VIII will have an all-aluminum spaceframe architecture, as Rolls-Royce will no longer build future models with a monocoque construction. This

new architecture allows the luxury car to be 30 percent more rigid than the Phantom VII. With this new light construction, a new double-wishbone front axle, five-link rear axle and Magic Carpet ride, the new Phantom will provide one of the most luxurious drives, ever. As with all Rolls-Royce models, the new Phantom will be silent. In fact, the English automaker says it is the “most silent motor car in the world.” This feat was accomplished by including 6mm two-layer glazing around the car, 287 lbs of sound insulation, large cast aluminum joints, groundbreaking “SilentSeal tires” and other absorption materials. The Silent-Seal tires have a foam layer inside of them that reduce tire noise by 9db.
