September means only one thing to auto aficionados: recovering from Monterey Car Week. Concours, auctions, and vintage car racing are the backdrop for an industry and its customers to rub elbows while celebrating their collective passion together. This year’s event was no exception, so in this issue, we’re riding the high and examining a few of the features that make this coastal stretch of Northern California so great. On page 36, we recap the history of Monterey Car Week’s acclaimed grand finale event, the Concours d’Elegance, first run in 1950. Then on page 44, we tour Pebble Beach’s famous 17-Mile Drive. This loop around the Monterey Peninsula skims white sand beaches and drives deep into lush forests; we recommend a few pit stops to make along the way. Perhaps more so than cars, Pebble Beach is known for world-class golf. On page 80, we look at the rise of Pebble Beach Golf Links, the No. 1 course in the country. There’s more overlap with golf and the automotive world than you may think. Formula 1 driver Lando Norris explains on page 94 how golf can be a complimentary training exercise and a much-needed way to decompress mentally between races. Monterey Car Week has become a de facto show for automakers to launch new cars, as well. Many times, a Pebble Beach event is the first time a new model is shown to the public in person. There are lots of new supercars we expected to see there, including three in this month’s issue. The first is our cover car, the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic. This new 911 combines the car’s classic design elements with state-of-the-art mechanics. Available only with a 7-speed manual, the new Sport Classic is based on the 911 Turbo S and features a tweaked 3.7-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine producing 543 horsepower. There are so many amazing design details on this car, our favorite being the ducktail spoiler and retro Fuchs wheels. Pour over all the 911 Sport Classic features on page 12. California’s own supercar, the Czinger 21C, would certainly be a worthy attendee of Monterey Car Week. The 21C has set lap records at Laguna Seca and Circuit of the Americas. With 1,233 horsepower and a 0 to 60 time of just 1.9 seconds, this car is a beast among beasts and perfect for the Pebble Beach crowd to ogle. Check out our overview of Czinger’s masterpiece on page 28. Another car for the books is Pagani’s Huayra Codalunga (page 32), a long-tail variant of the brand’s supercar developed at the request of a few design-minded customers. Only five will ever be made, creating a level of rarity that ensures it will be an instant collectible. The Porsche 911 has spent decades in the limelight thanks to its familiar yet ever-changing design and engineering prowess. And it’s because of this lineage that the car stands out in any crowd. From a distinctive ducktail spoiler to the quality of the interior fabrics, so many aspects contribute to making the Porsche 911 special. With its latest generation, the 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic, the highperformance German marque is taking cues from the past and blending that with modern tech and comforts. This new heritage model pays tribute to the iconic 911 Carrera RS 2.9 from the early 1970s. However, it’s all based around the current 911 Turbo S. Only 1,250 examples of this model will be created, so it will most certainly become a collector’s car in the near and distant future. But, what makes this heritage model so singular? For starters, the exterior of the new 911 Sport Classic is undoubtedly inspired by the classic model. The most apparent design cue borrowed from the 1972 and 1973 911 Carrera RS 2.7 is the large ducktail spoiler made from carbon-fiberreinforced plastic (CFRP). This spoiler is also flanked by wider rear fenders

Other exterior features are unique to this model: the fixed frontspoiler lip, CFRP hood with a dip in the center, CFRP double-bubble roof, graphics, and even 911 Sport Classic wheels that provide a modern take on the classic Fuchs design. Inside, the cabin of the 911 Sport Classic harks back to the models of the 1960s and ’70s through myriad materials and design nuances. This includes Pepita cloth upholstery for the seat centers and door panels as well as Black nappa leather and fine semi-aniline leather in Classic Cognac. Porsche has also equipped the cabin of the new heritage model with open-pore, Paldao wood trim for a sleek finishing touch. While these classic touches draw the eye, the modern powertrain delivers an unforgettable drive. As it’s based around the 911 Turbo S, this new model is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter flat-six engine developing 543 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque. What’s more, that power is sent through an exclusive seven-speed manual transmission to the rear wheels for an uncompromised driving experience. The 2023 Porsche 911 Sport Classic is the second heritage model from the automaker, following the 2020 911 Targa 4S Heritage Design Edition, and it is poised to become an instant classic.At the intersection of heritage and modernity, this model is a wonderful representation of Porsche’s desire to pay homage to its past. ••• The Cumbrian Green exterior color may look black in most lighting scenarios, but it offers plenty of sparkle in the desert sun. The darkened version of the Speed’s standard 22-inch wheels finishes off a sinister look.
It’s nearly 95 degrees out as the Las Vegas strip comes into view. But behind the wheel of the latest Bentley Continental GT Speed — a slick grand tourer draped with stunning leatherwork, aggressive styling, and a world-class engine — the heat is of little concern. This model is a last hoorah for Bentley, as its twin-turbocharged W12 is poised to cease production soon. With this being the ultimate internal-combustion GT Speed, it felt fitting to put the machine through its paces with a desert run from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back. Rather than staying the night, I’ve opted to make this a one-day trip. I’ll cover more than 600 miles in nine hours. As the sun rises over Los Angeles, the Speed’s W12 roars into life. It develops 650 horsepower and 664 pound-feet of torque, allowing this 5,000-plus-pound coupe to reach 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. Its top speed is an equally impressive 208 mph. However, these stats don’t even tell half the story. The latest GT Speed is all about its chassis. A new four-wheel steering system allows its rear wheels to turn in tandem with the front, resulting in greater stability at higher speeds. Supplementing that is a new electronic limited-slip
differential for even greater traction. The star of the show, however, is the new active anti-roll bar system that hooks up to small electric motors allowing the GT Speed to effectively cancel all body roll. On the highway, the GT Speed is nothing short of an unstoppable force. Despite its size, it picks up speed in ways that shouldn’t be possible. Thanks to its standard all-wheel drive system and dualclutch transmission, the GT puts all of its power down. As the speedo rises, the noise inside the cabin remains low. The GT proves to be a wonderful place to spend nine hours. With an allgreen interior dotted with more buttons, screens, and adjustable modes than a modern airliner, it’s clear that the car is a powerhouse on all fronts. With a base price of nearly $275,000 and an as-tested price of $350,000, the GT Speed had a lot of impressing to do to justify its price tag. Thankfully it did just that living up to more than what it claimed to be.Aside from being a large comfortable grand tourer, the GT Speed proved to be a formidable sports car as well. It’s easily my favorite modern Bentley and a proper send off to its impressive engine.

1. Powering the Czinger 21C is a twin-turbo 2.88-liter V8 engine developed in house. Working alongside it is an 800V electric drive and regeneration system that brings the total power output up to 1,250 horsepower.
2. Czinger employed groundbreaking technologies to ensure that the 21C is as efficient as possible. As Czinger puts it on their website, “the car is computationally engineered, printed, and assembled.” This results in a 1:1 power-to-weight ratio and phenomenal aerodynamics.
3. Electric motors are positioned at each of the front wheels, providing instant power. The batteries that propel these motors can be charged while driving thanks to regenerative braking and a Formula 1– inspired kinetic motorgenerator unit attached to the engine. The hybrid powertrain features a seven-speed sequential transaxle gearbox.
4. The 21C interior features a “jet fighter” layout wherein the driver’s seat is placed in the middle of the vehicle and the passenger seat behind. This layout gives the hypercar the best possible weight distribution and really connects the driver to the road ahead.
5. Aiding in the 21C’s incredible downforce capabilities is a suite of aero components such as the front splitter and rear wing. Like the rest of the vehicle, these components are put together by Czinger’s team in Los Angeles, California.

A staple within the world of high-end hypercars, the Pagani Huayra is easily one of the most innovative machines to emerge from the mind of Horacio Pagani, the Italian marque’s Argentinian founder. Focused on delivering a truly unique automotive experience, Horacio’s sharp eye for design and performance led to the debut of the first Pagani Huayra back in January 2015. During its sevenyear production period, the Huayra took shape in an array of desirable examples that include the Huayra BC, Huayra Roadster, Huayra BC Roadster, and Huayra R. The all-new Huayra Codalunga is the latest “Tailor Made Suite” in Automobili Pagani’s portfolio of luxury hypercars. This longtail Huayra pays homage to classic 1960s race cars and the shapes crafted by classic Italian coachbuilders. The idea of creating a series of coach-built Huayras arrived in 2018, when two avid Pagani collectors approached the brand requesting a long-tail version of the Coupé. Jumping on board with the idea, Horacio and his team quickly went to work to develop the project behind the special operations doors of Pagani Grandi Complicazioni. The most noticeable feature of the Huayra Codalunga is its elongated body, which beautifully accentuates the curvatures that control its aerodynamics and cooling elements. With a dry weight of only 2,822 pounds, the Codalunga’s chassis is built using a carbo-titanium tub to ensure a lightweight feel while providing extra strength. Color options focus on neutral tones that not only commemorate finishes from the ’60s but also highlight the simplicity of the car. The interior travels back in time to an era when the cabin of a

Every year in August, the automotive world makes a pilgrimage to California for Monterey Car Week. The week is filled with incredible events, ranging from auctions and jet parties to races and car shows.The highlight, though, has to be the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, which acts as the grand finale. This concours event has quite the history in America, dating back to the midcentury, when the idea of the Concept Lawn was unheard of. Though the format traces back further to prestigious car shows in France, the inaugural 1950 Concours d’Elegance in Pebble Beach was the first of its kind in the States. A small number of cars were shown off on the driving range at Pebble Beach Golf Links. In 1952, the concours relocated to the golf course, where it remains today. The Concours d’Elegance continued with a loose format for years to come, focusing on showing off the latest cars, race winners, and future classics. One of the most important additions made to the event in the early years has to be the introduction of promotional posters in 1958. These commemorative prints are well-loved among the Pebble Beach crowd and showcase the evolution of the automotive world over the years. While judges have been present since the event’s nascency, the judging structure was bolstered in the early 1970s. By creating a more robust judging system, the Pebble Beach event was set up to provide collectors with the crown jewel of awards, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance Best of Show award. Additionally, it was during the ’70s that the tradition of gifting judges with unique ties — or bowties or scarves — began thanks to Robert Talbott. Through the decades, the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance has grown in size and admiration. Collectors from around the globe prepare their vehicles for the event, hoping that they can take home the coveted Best of Show award. Automakers also seize the event as an opportunity to debut new vehicles and show off their latest offerings. Lining the edge of Monterey Peninsula, 17-Mile Drive blends epic beachfront views with densely forested areas along some of California most pristine coastline. During Monterey Car Week, this stretch of road becomes a runway for some of the world’s rarest and most expensive cars, as they emerge from their climate-controlled bunkers to see the light of day. For onlookers, 17-Mile Drive is one of the best locations to glimpse these historical artifacts in motion any time of year thanks to the abundance of mega-mansions perched in the nearby hills. Naturally, I had to experience this scenic route and view the parade of legendary metal for myself. There’s a 25-mph speed limit along 17-Mile Drive, so I opted for what I would deem a conservative car choice — something comfortable, spacious, and modest enough not to draw too much attention yet luxurious enough to fit right in. The 641-horsepower Lamborghini Urus was the right machine for the job. With the Urus’ adaptive suspension in its most comfortable setting and the windows down, I paid the $11.25 entrance fee and entered 17-Mile Drive. The original purpose of this road, constructed in 1880, was to serve as a place for guests of the historic Hotel Del Monte to see the sights on horse-drawn carriages. Railroad executives owned the 4,000-acre property, and in addition to luring guests to the landmark hotel, they also hoped the views would sell residential plots — which they did. Today, the drive is lined with hundreds of lavish homes, the most expensive of which sold for more than $36 million earlier this year.

••• Powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the Lamborghini Urus pairs the agility of a sports car with the functionality of an SUV capable of navigating any terrain. It accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 3.6 seconds and tops out at 190 mph.
Parking lots along the route invite drivers to stop to check out the secluded beaches and unique vantage points. Seal Rock was a personal highlight, which, as its name suggests, is a large rock covered in seals. As I gave nature photography a fair shot, a crew of classic car owners rolled by, serving as a quick reminder to keep my lens fixed also on the road for even more rarities. When I reached Cypress Point, I traded the stunning beachfront for the shade of the forest. Pebble Beach is home to the Monterey cypress, a tree that’s endemic to Central California and characterized by its unusual flat-top shape, formed over time by high winds. They can grow as tall as 133 feet with trunks up to 8 feet in diameter. These behemoths were everywhere, injecting a healthy dose of green into the landscape. It’s impressive how well they block out light, bringing the temperature down significantly as you leave the beach. Everywhere you turn, there are new sights and plenty of local history to learn about. However, as it began to rain, I turned my attention to the car. Following a seven-hour charge up the coast the day prior, the Urus had proven to be an ideal companion. It may not be the ideal tool to tackle twisty canyon roads, but it behaves as a six-figure SUV should. It’s quiet, comfortable, and powerful enough to outrun almost anything on the road. Spending a few hours on 17-Mile Drive proved easy, even on a random weekday. And now I can say I’ve driven the route acclaimed for staging one of the world’s most exclusive rolling car shows.

It has been 50 years since Ferrari officially participated in the highest tier of endurance racing, and it appears as though that absence is coming to an end. Ferrari has announced that it will be making its return as part of the Le Mans Hypercar program in the 2023 FIA World Endurance Championship. The new Hypercar class is comprised of two types of cars: Le Mans Hypercar (LMH) and Le Mans Daytona h (LMDh). Ferrari’s new vehicle will be an LMH. With this classification, Ferrari designers and engineers had a wider range of options for the architecture and were even able to fit the front axle with a hybrid drive system. Ferrari has been testing its new hypercar
at Fiorano, the marque’s private race track in Maranello, Italy. Recently, Ferrari has allowed various racing drivers to experience the car’s capabilities, including Davide Rigon. Regarding his time in his car, Rigon said in a press release from Ferrari: “It was a real honor to be one of the first drivers to drive this wonderful car. It’s a real Ferrari, in every sense. Right from its first acceleration, it gives you great confidence, has good braking, great handling, and feels brilliant behind the wheel.” This new creation from Ferrari will be unlike anything we have seen out of Modena thus far. It’s an exciting time for the Prancing Horse, and we cannot wait to see this new Ferrari hypercar in action.

SILVERSTONE July 03, 2022 During the 2022 British Grand Prix, Formula 1 safety features were put to the test. At the beginning of the race, Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu was upended, forcing his car to slide upside down across the track until it smashed into the barrier. Cameras do not broadcast horrific crashes like this until marshals confirm that the driver is OK. Thanks to incredible safety mechanisms on the car, in this case, he walked away without any major injuries.

Regarded as the No. 1 public golf course in the United States, Pebble Beach Golf Links lies along the breathtaking Pacific coast in Pebble Beach, California. The prestigious course was founded by Samuel Finley Brown Morse (a distant cousin of Samuel Finley Breese Morse, who invented the telegraph and Morse code). After convincing the board of the Pacific Improvement Company to build Pebble Beach Golf Links in 1916, Brown Morse’s dream course saw its grand opening along 17-Mile Drive on Feb. 19, 1919. Through its century of existence, Pebble Beach Golf Links has cultivated a historic legacy by hosting some of the most iconic tournaments in golf. The 7,075-yard par-72 track plays as an open 18-hole layout with a configuration that has proven challenging even for golf icons like Bobby Jones, Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. Woods made golf history in 2000 at the 15th hole — a treacherous 572-yard par 5 — when he shot an eagle to steal his sixth straight PGA Tour win over Matt Gogel. Peter Michael Winery Point Rouge Estate CHARDONNAY Appellation: Knights Valley, Sonoma County Cases produced annually: Less than 250 Waitlist: “Significant” Winemaker Robert Fiore calls the Point Rouge Estate chardonnay a winemaker’s ultimate dream, allowing him “to go through the very best lots from each vineyard block and select the finest individual barrels to create a blend that represents that ultimate expression from that vintage.” The label is not vineyard-specific, so he sources fruit from three steep mountainous vineyards on volcanic soil, evaluates the best lots from each, and tastes barrel by barrel “in search of the sublime” before going through a multisession blending process. “The final blend of the selected barrels is not assembled until just before bottling to allow maximum sur lie aging,” he explains. “In the end, it’s the extraordinary terroir here at our Knights Valley estate that makes Point Rouge unique.” Each vintage flexes its own flavor profile with common waves of toasty brioche, bright honeysuckle, and citrus framed with an oystershell minerality; bottles will age gracefully for two to three decades.

While cabernet franc is traditionally used for blending, French-born Luc Morlet wanted to let the Bordeaux grape shine on its own. “The main idea is to capture a wine that is outside the ordinary, that has a strong personality,” the fifth-generation winemaker says. “It’s an intense and massive style but still very luscious, very soft tannins, and of course very complex.” This bottle’s name honors his greatgrandfather: a large, spirited man and the force behind the family’s passion for winemaking. The first vintage was produced in 2010, and the 2015 got a future-altering 100-point rating from Robert Parker. While Morlet originally utilized grapes from Napa Valley’s well-regarded Beckstoffer To-Kalon vineyards, he and wife, Jodie, have since planted their own vineyards on 24 adjacent acres. Current vintages are now made exclusively from their estate-grown fruit and present an intense, full-bodied pairing of cracked pepper and mocha on the nose and palate swirled with notes of scorched earth and forest floor. The couple has dedicated a whopping onethird of the land to cabernet franc with “low vigor” root stock, which means the vines bear less fruit but greater concentration. “As a wine grower,” Morlet says, “there’s much more satisfaction because we get the highest quality.”

MacDonald Winery CABERNET SAUVIGNON Appellation: Oakville, Napa Valley Cases produced annually: 500 Waitlist: 6+ years MacDonald Winery makes only one wine: a coveted cab that comes from some of the oldest vines in Napa Valley, originally planted by winemaker Graeme MacDonald’s greatgrandparents 70 years ago at the acclaimed To-Kalon vineyard. For decades, the grapes were sold exclusively to family friend and legendary winemaker Robert Mondavi, who used them in his prestigious Reserve and To-Kalon bottles. In the aughts, the MacDonalds began experimenting with winemaking themselves; the 2010 vintage, released in 2013, was their first bottling. “It’s a real heritage thing,” says MacDonald, who personally handles the farming on the 15-acre block, while his brother Alex oversees the business side. “My connection to my earlier generations is being able to farm the vines that they planted. We only make what I can make with my own hands. Nobody else touches the wine.” The vineyard’s deep soil has a high gravel content that holds little water, making for an intense growing environment. “That means your vine puts its energy towards ripening and survival,” he says, “so you get a lot of power in the fruit.” The MacDonald cabernet is classically styled with notes of dark fruit, black olive, and pencil shavings and is balanced with fine tannins. “I make wine with restraint. You have to be willing not to extract everything from it, so it’s got plenty of minerality and concentration naturally.”

In a world where drivers regularly race at up to 220 mph, life moves fast and time is a luxury. Perhaps that’s why so many Formula 1 legends are attracted to golf. Sure, both are precision sports requiring incredible concentration and a steady hand, but the golf course challenges players to take things slow. “You have to be patient,” says McLaren’s Lando Norris, one of the hottest young guns on the Formula 1 grid. The 22-year-old — whose racing number is, coincidentally, four — can often be found teeing off when he’s able to steal away from the F1 circus. A perk of the job, which takes him to more than 20 countries in a single racing season, is access to some of the world’s most prestigious courses. “I’m a guy who wants to win now,” he says. “Golf takes time.” And while there can sometimes be a team aspect to contend with on the course, as with automotive racing, it’s very much an individual challenge. “I want to be on the LIV Tour, I want to be a PGA pro, but I know I’m not going to be,” Norris says. “Maybe one day I can.” In May, between the Miami and Spanish grands prix, Norris teed off at Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia alongside McLaren CEO Zak Brown. “As a massive golf fan, everyone dreams of going to play Augusta,” he quipped during a press conference ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix. “You know, everyone probably wants to go and drive Monaco at some point. If you win it, then it’s the dream. So I think it’s a similar thing: If you get play Augusta, you’ll be happy enough.” Ever the competitor, Norris may never be “happy enough.” His personal best is an 85, though he’s determined to slash that. Of course, the driver’s clear focus is on Formula 1, where he is considered a future championship contender. You’ll find no argument from his McLaren team, given the papaya squad has him locked down until at least 2025. “I think McLaren is where I want to win races as a driver,” says Norris, still desperate to score his maiden victory in the sport. “I’m the driver McLaren want to be able to win races with. … And I believe that we can do that as a team. I believe McLaren can win races and win championships as long as I’m with them for the next few years.” They’re bold words from the precocious Briton, who now just needs his team to deliver the race-winning car, so he can challenge top rivals Red Bull Racing and Ferrari at the front of the field. But he knows he must be patient. Like the game of golf, it’s all about chipping away in pursuit of perfection. SEP TEMBER 2022

••• Developed with the help of Ferrari’s Formula 1 technicians, the Maserati MC12 Corsa won at the 24 Hours of Spa in 2005, its debut year, and again in 2006 and ’08.
What happens when you think of the brand name Maserati? You think of Quattroporte, Ghibli, Gran Turismo, and now, of their newest sports car: the MC20. There is more to that name than you would imagine. Maserati in motorsport has had scarce representation, but when they’ve shown up in the past, they’ve seen great success. Enter the “Birdcage.” Back in the 1960s, Maserati developed their Tipo 60/61 race cars with the help of Caroll Shelby (yes, that Shelby), who did some early test driving. With that, and the automaker’s intricate tubular frame that inspired the Birdcage moniker, Maserati was equipped in 1960 to enter the 24 hours of Le Mans — and maintain average times that clocked in more than 4 minutes ahead of Ferrari. Unfortunately, a starter issue and torrential rains would prove to be too much for the open wheel race car, but it redeemed itself with exceptional results winning the Six Hours of Nürburgring (then the Nürburgring 1000 km). Fast-forward to 2004, and Maserati returned to motorsport with a sensational race car, which became a scandal when it was unveiled. Due to debate around regulations for homologation, the MC12 Corsa is not only notorious for being a rule-bender but an outright legend, as no other vehicle was ever able to achieve what it did in its day. No other vehicle has been able to win the 24 hours of Spa on a vehicle debut the way the MC12 did in 2005, then again in 2006, and once more in 2008. The accolades don’t stop there, the MC12 GT1 won five consecutive titles for the GT category of endurance racing and in 2010 went on to win the inaugural FIA GT1 World Championship. As far as provenance is concerned, this vehicle was developed with Ferrari’s Formula 1 technicians conducting four to five consecutive days of testing every 15 days. It proved to be the only application of the Ferrari Enzo V12 engine in the racing world, as the Enzo never saw anything beyond the FXX program. With its unique combination of racing wins, engineering achievements, and a limited production of only 12 units, the Maserati MC12 Corsa is undeniably a collectible commemoration of Italian automotive history.
