From The Publisher Dear Reader,
September/October 2017
Welcome to our Home Design and Furnishing issue, where you will find many interesting, stimulating and unusual trends and ideas for your reading and viewing pleasure. As all of us in Florida recover from this traumatic Hurricane Season, we appreciate our families, homes and properties even more. For those who have had losses, we are keeping you in our thoughts, and hope that you may recover quickly and fully. Most of us are sticking close to home during these recovery days and months. You can enjoy our own area featured in our dR Around the Bay section of this issue. Restaurants from Oldsmar to Tampa are featured on page 30, and in our dR Culinary Masters editorial on page 66 you will be tempted by a new craft distillery in St Petersburg. If those don’t suit your interests, see our 2017 Calendar which is featured on page 92. Or, if it is relaxation you seek, see our Luxury Spa Bath Retreats article. For those who begin their holiday shopping early, our PUBLISHERS PICKS on pages 10 and 11 have some unique gifts for your consideration. The holiday season will be here before we know it, so get prepared now. Our dR FASHION section focuses on “Falling out of Summer” and your Fall wardrobe. Thank you to our Fashion Editor, Erika Ceruti from GIOFFRE Boutique for coordinating this collection and putting this feature all together. Remember, this marks the return of our high fashion feature now under Erika’s distinguished and skilled direction. Wait until you see the next issue! Our dR HEALTH features The GracePoint Foundation event held at the duPont REGISTRY Headquarters recently. Sharon Fekete, Health and Wellness Editor, led the informative panel discussion on the subject of mental wellness. This is the first of a series of panel discussions on important issues before us. Mental Health and Wellness is a subject that has become more and more critical. Thanks to our expert panelists for their valuable insights. We hope that you will join us for any future seminars/panel discussions on important topics of our time. And, last but surely not least, our BACK PAGE feature is focused on a local woman warrior who remembers 9/11. This touching story about RHS - Remember • Honor • Support, is the perfect ending to a thoughtful issue during this stressful time in Florida. Be safe, stay well, and enjoy this issue!
Thomas L. duPont Publisher/Chairman P.S. I am most pleased to have an absolutely gorgeous interior photo of Century Oaks in Clearwater on our cover. This extraordinary residence is listed for sale by Lauren Michaels Real Estate (see their ad on page 84). The owner spared no expense in creating a truly unique and sophisticated look that would be very difficult to replicate. As a sample of the epitome of interior decorating style, we are happy to share a glimpse of the very best in our "Home Design and Furnishing" issue. 6

Letter from the Health & Wellness Editor his is the first of many bi-monthly columns to be penned under the Health and Wellness Editor moniker. I hope to provide you with timely, interesting, enlightening information regarding your personal health and wellness, and the resources and events in our communities. To that end, I will focus on topical interests of note and attempt to personalize the comments with the experience and expertise of others in the know and available to the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay. You will also be made aware of any special events sponsored by the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay and any breaking stories through our ever popular website: www.dupontregistrytampabay.com. By now, many of you are already aware of the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay series of lectures, seminars, panel discussions that we sponsor approximately six times a year. The first of these special events was held this past month at the duPont REGISTRY world headquarters just off Ulmerton Road in the Feather Sound area of Pinellas County. The panel consisted of six distinguished medical professionals who shared observations on the process of a preventative lifestyle that enhances the mental health of one’s family, home, workspace and community. Inspired by your Health and Wellness Editor, the panelists enlightened the crowd on the subtle and not so subtle effects of mental health disease and how to best prepare each of us to lift the stigma of the disease and limit the effects felt by all involved. It was a special evening that was inspired by initial conversations with the publisher, Tom duPont. As the Health and Wellness editor, I took his suggestion and contacted Bill Lutes, a good friend of the publisher and a current Board Member of the Gracepoint Foundation. From his gracious repose, I visited with Ian Adair, the executive director of Gracepoint. I found a multi-disciplined organization poised at a moment’s notice to assist those in need as they face the serious issues of depression, drug and alcohol addiction, and even suicide. They are not only ready to help but also promote sound living and lifestyle environments. The result is an alliance between the duPont REGISTRY Tampa Bay and Gracepoint wherein the proceeds of our series of events will be forwarded to the Andrew Lutes endowment at Gracepoint. This special fund was established by Bill Lutes in memory of his son whom he lost to suicide in April of 2016. Under Bill's leadership and with our support we hope to assist Gracepoint in its journey to irrigate the stigma of mental health illness and promote a “Health and Wellness” environment. Please join us as the journey begins and be ready for our next health and wellness event in a month or so. I must comment that today's world seems to enhance the ability for mental health disease to occur, but it also affords us the opportunity to do something about it. Recent events in the music world with the loss of Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell have inspired a new and

more intense dialogue. Locally, there have been other events focusing on the issues of mental health disease including The Beer and Bowtie fundraiser benefiting the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay was held on August 25, 2017. On a more personal note, I suffered through my own mental health issues in my teenage years. It has been over 25 years since my depression has lifted and I am eternally grateful for the professional guidance that helped me through my own recovery. I can assure you that I come from a healthy, happy, loving home with all the benefits a young adult could sustain, I grew up in a middle-class family with loving parents and two loving brothers. I suffered with deep depression that required therapy, medication, self-realization, love, understanding and lots of TLC. I hope that my successful journey can be replicated with support from all of you and resources like the Crisis Center and Gracepoint. People of all ages face the challenge of mental health disease in many ways that are not always noticeable. I encourage you to reach out if you need help and encourage those whom you know facing serious effects of mental health disease to seek help. Our community needs and deserves your support in this special battle. More next month from your Health and Wellness Editor, The Doctor Whisperer, Sharon.

L
ighting in your home and at the office can affect the way you feel and impact your health. There is an abundance of clinical research that supports the notion that exposure to certain types of electric light before bed can increase risk of Type 2 Diabetes, high blood pressure and cancer. Sound extreme? Google it! Or, we can reflect on how many alerts we received leading up to the August 21st Solar Eclipse. This may seem intense in comparison, but I think we can all agree that light can impact your health. Why is it so important? duPont REGISTRYTM spoke with Fabio Zaniboni, President of Zaniboni Lighting. Light in the morning helps us wake up, feel alert and become energized. Dimmer light at night is the cue for our internal clock to prepare us for sleep. Until 10 years ago, there was only fluorescent light with LED as an electronic system. You can now, with advanced technology, fine-tune the frequency at which your LED omits or vibrates. Today, LED systems are used for growing plants, sanitizing and disinfecting. This shift in technology is not only beneficial for the aesthetics, but also stimulates the senses in our body as they react to the rhythm of lighting. Improved technology in LED lighting systems is only a year old. Warm dimming or tunable white light are new advances, and provide a unique opportunity to set the mood of your room, office space or home. Emotions are triggered because of the wavelengths you are creating. You can set the mood by the time your guests arrive for a dinner party. After guests have entered your home, set the LED and shift the light toward a warmer look. If you concentrate on the color of light and then shift the color gradually, people will transition from space to space within your home and their emotions will
change accordingly. Imagine an audio system in a luxurious home that emits unfriendly music, it can give off negative emotions for your guests. Fluorescent lighting can express the same negativity. It is best to have subtle mood-shifting lighting to ensure happy guests. Lighting can set the mood, like fragrance can tantalize your senses. It is as important as the music, food, and guest list, because aesthetics in lighting affect our perception. We have become more visual through the years, so we encourage you to create a mood and ignite positive emotions with luxurious lighting. The best designers always use 95 CRI (color rendering index) in exquisite homes. In general terms, CRI is a measure of a light source’s ability to show object colors “naturally.” This difference in quality and aesthetics is of extreme importance, and the best lighting solution in very high-end residences. You always want your guests to arrive in the brightest entrance, and delight in their emotions throughout the home in a circadian cycle. Zaniboni is a prestigious and unique company that works with Disney, all flagship Tiffany stores, Nike, museums, yachts and more. They work on priceless projects throughout the world, including Dubai, London, Paris, New York and Los Angeles. With over 50 employees, the company recently expanded into two buildings located in Clearwater. One structure contains 16,000 square feet of office space, and the other has 12,000 square feet for manufacturing. Recently, Tampa Bay Business Journal named Chiara Zaniboni as their 2017 Business Woman of the Year in Manufacturing. Chiara has taken her company from a start-up to a multi-million dollar manufacturing company. On a final note, please consider that light is critical for our health and wellbeing. Ensuring that we receive adequate light levels throughout the day benefits our mood, productivity, sleep patterns and our physiological well being. We hope you consider these parallels and invest in proper lighting for your home. G

esigning an amazing kitchen is just as much an art form as creating a culinary masterpiece. With the right blend of innovative technology, good design principles and beautiful furnishings, it’s possible to create the perfect gathering spot for family and friends. Lynn Kislin, owner of Appliance Gallery, says that one of the newest trends is to super size the oven range. After all, what would a kitchen be without a stove? “Induction ranges have been standard in the 30-inch size, but now we’re seeing them in the 36-inch and 48-inch size,” says Kislin. What’s driving the demand? “The larger sizes are going to give homeowners that big professional style – it’s very smart looking, while also giving them lots of flexibility,” says Kislin. “The bigger ranges have lots of space for cooking multiple items at the same time, and

the convenience of cooking everything at different temperatures.” Creating With Color White kitchens are still popular but, now splashes of color are appearing with a little pizzazz. “Imagination is the only limitation as far as mixing color into the kitchen,” says Kislin. Rather than using color on cabinets or countertops, it’s showing up in a surprising place – on kitchen ranges. While stainless appliances will always be in demand for their sleek sophisticated style, custom colors like red, yellow, blue, navy and vintage green are suddenly all the rage. “We’re showing red, blue and navy in our showroom,” says Kislin. “Most people aren’t brave enough to select red, but they’re definitely interested in blue and navy. A blue range in the kitchen can really make a statement.”
By: Janan Talafer Countertops & Islands For Suzan Decker Ross of Decker Ross Interiors, designing a beautiful kitchen often starts with the countertop. While granite will always be in demand for its quality, she says many of her customers are selecting quartz instead. Quartz has the appearance of natural stone, but is less porous so it doesn’t need to be sealed. It’s also stain and scratch resistant, durable, and has a more uniform pattern. In addition, there’s less waste, which lowers the cost. “You have to buy the whole slab with granite, but only what you need with quartz,” says Decker Ross. Kitchen islands are getting longer and rectangular, rather than a big square shape, and some are getting a splash of color – a design feature that can change the whole personality of the room. For example, the Decker Ross design team created a custom kitchen featuring a contrasting turquoise color on the island, a nice tie-in with the colorful mosaic backsplash on the wall. Countertops on kitchen islands are also getting a cool update with the distinctive waterfall edge, a sleek, streamlined appearance in which the countertop extends all the way down to the floor. It’s very striking look and suitable for any style, from traditional to modern, says Decker Ross. Cabinet hardware is getting a fresh look too, with oversize pulls. And they’re being turned horizontally, rather than the more traditional vertical position. “A horizontal pull really highlights the cabinet and creates a beautiful look,” says Decker Ross. Must-Have Kitchen Tools Every well-dressed kitchen needs the right high-quality tools to get the job done in style. Chris Arbutine, co-owner of The Silver Queen, suggests Wolf Gourmet countertop appliances. Everything from toasters and countertop convection ovens to blenders, pots and pans and cutlery are all manufactured with the same attention to detail and high performance as the company’s line of large appliances, says Arbutine. For example, the four-slice toaster has an advanced toasting technology that comes with a “precise” shade selector knob to give you the ultimate control over how light or dark you want your toast. Looking for those essential small kitchen essentials like grinders, peelers, graters, can openers and baking sheets? Arbutine recommends Kuhn Rikon, a high-end Swiss brand that also includes a line of energy-efficient cookware and cutlery. For the finishing touch, set your table with top quality French linens. Arbutine recommends linens from Garnier-Thiebaut, a French company dating back to 1830 whose products are used in exclusive hotels and homes worldwide. The company’s French damask cotton tablecloths, napkins, placemats and kitchen towels are 100 percent stain resistant and long lasting. G

Luxury Spa Bath Retreats

lean, contemporary lines, combined with a focus on health and hygiene are the hottest new trends for creating a luxury bathroom that doubles as a spa-like sanctuary for the home. After a stressful day, taking some time to rejuvenate and pamper yourself can be just as important to your well being as eating well and exercising. Want to update your bath to reflect the latest decorating ideas and high-tech innovations? Here is some advice from the experts. Stylish Design Bathroom faucets are no longer just utilitarian but can be a striking design feature. “Modern shapes and forms for bathroom faucets feature clean, curved lines and soft edges that make them easy to incorporate into any design style, from traditional to contemporary,” says Ferguson Tampa showroom Manager Jennifer Hettich. Vanities are also a far cry from the standard bathroom cabinets that many of us grew up with. “With today’s vanities, it’s all about the unity of form and function, as well as personalization,” says Hettich. “Cabinets can be customized with your choice of finish, configuration, adaptable accessories and bold color options.” Rejuvenation Clawfoot tubs and tubs with pedestal bases are out, says Hettich. But that doesn’t mean homeowners aren’t enjoying the opportunity to indulge with a long, deep, hot soak. Instead, the latest trend is toward freestanding tubs designed with clean lines and sleek geometric shapes. These tubs create a cool sculptural look that serves as focal point for the room. Steam showers that bring the health club or spa experience to the privacy of your bathroom are another great way to relax tense muscles and give yourself a few moments of serenity after a long week. There’s nothing like the experience of lounging in a steam room, but within the comfort and privacy of your own home, says Hettich, Steam showers can also improve the skin by adding moisturizing humidity and rid the body of toxins. European Wellness Bidets have been growing in popularity as homeowners return from a trip overseas or a stay at a luxury hotel where bidet and washlet amenities are commonplace. Both bidets and washlets use a watercleansing system for cleaning and freshening up. “Customers are looking for products that aid in better hygiene and once they’ve used a bidet, they want to bring that experience to their own home,” says Hettich. Innovation combined with hygiene are also transforming toilet designs. According to Hettich, the new touchless toilet style, which features germ-free, no touch flushing capability, promotes increased hygiene and the new “skirted” streamlined designs make for easier cleaning. Hettich points out that many smart toilets with digital controls or Bluetooth® connectivity include features that reduce manual cleaning time and promote increased hygiene. She says that for self-cleaning toilets, the term “self-clean” means there is a mechanism or design element built into the toilet to reduce the need for traditional manual cleaning. New cleaning options include special cleaning solutions, hydrophobic or hydrophilic glazes, advanced flushing technology and specially-designed rims. Enjoy a staycation at home with a sumptuous spa-inspired master bath that includes all the amenities of your favorite luxury hotel and spa. G

Illuminating Ideas To Light Up Your Home
Photos courtesy of Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery
38 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
By: Linde Hyder lot has changed in the world of lighting since the introduction of the light bulb nearly 140 years ago. Important advancements have made lighting more energy efficient and, much like the fashion industry, new styles have emerged to light up our lives inside and outside the home. So what’s trending now? “Lighting has become the ‘jewelry’ of the home,” says Kathy Fyock, Lighting Specialist with Ferguson Bath, Kitchen & Lighting Gallery. “People are using lighting much as they would a piece of art and making it the focal point of their home decor.” Creativity is key when it comes to lighting designs. Inspired by nature, designers are utilizing organic materials, such as twigs, shells, semi-precious stones, pearls, rope, and recycled wood. When it comes to color, ‘dark is out and light is in’. Gone is the dark, heavy, ornate look associated with Tuscan and Mediterranean styles. Instead, cooler earthy shades are the predominant choice now. “And, of course, everything has gone LED!” exclaims Kathy. Thanks to the prevailing farmhouse modern and mid-century modern styles, home interiors are becoming more contemporary. Look for fixtures that have sleek, simple lines as well as greater usage of recessed ‘strips’ for coves and step lighting. Iron fixtures reflecting a Spanish influence are also in vogue, as is the utilization of multiple fixtures. Rather than choosing just one chandelier, for example, decorators are opting for six pendants hung at different heights to create one large chandelier. Mixed metals reflecting an artful blend of black, stainless steel, polished nickel, rose gold, antique bronze, and natural brass are becoming especially popular. Here in the Tampa Bay area Kathy says metallic color is a favorite among clients with the selection of polished nickel and soft golds in particular. Since entertaining in the Tampa Bay area often transcends beyond interior rooms, lighting is conducive to creating ambiance and character outdoors. Pendants hang over outdoor kitchens, decorative chandeliers accentuate al fresco dining, wall lights and recessed cans highlight pool terraces, and galvanized fixtures adorn conversation areas. Along the coast, properties are incorporating the use of amber LEDs or ‘turtle lights’ to ensure the safety of turtle hatchlings as they venture from their
A
beach nests to the ocean. Landscaping is also being enhanced with special lighting focused on garden areas, trees, and fountains. Particularly noteworthy is the concept of ‘moonlighting’ in which lights are strategically placed within a tree, giving the appearance of moonlight shining through the trees onto the walkways of a property. So, how do you determine the appropriate illumination for your home? “We recommend the TA DA method,” explains Kathy. According to Ferguson’s team of lighting specialists TA DA stands for: Task, Accent, Decorative, Ambient. The formula incorporates layers of lighting in order to get the proper illumination. For example: lighting under the kitchen cabinets is considered ‘task’ lighting. ‘Accent’ lighting could be two large pendants suspended over the island. An extra-large iron fixture is the ‘decoration’ while recessed cans serve as ‘ambient’ lighting. When it comes to today’s trends in lighting, more people are going for form over function, according to Kathy. Styles are being mixed to create a truly unique look and there is an artistic flair for designing fixtures of abstract shapes. “People are definitely having fun with lighting these days,” says Kathy. here’s more than an outside chance that folks hosting friends, family and other invited guests at their homes for cookouts, drinks or casual get togethers will include backyards, decks, pools and patios in the designated seating, eating and mingling areas. As social functions increasingly migrate from formal dining rooms to informal settings around fire pits, homeowners are investing in exterior spaces that are appealing, attractive and no longer at the mercy of outdoor elements like rain, sun and insects. For starters, the latest looks in natural stone tiles and pavers can serve as initial inspiration for a newly imagined exterior entertainment space. Tumbled travertine tiles and marble pavers like those stocked by Stone-Mart can distinguish an area with colorful shades, vibrant designs and eclectic patterns that elevate any exterior design project. With a wider selection than ever before of natural stone products available in the marketplace, homeowners can easily find a foundation that adds impact and visual interest to any landscape. “People want to improve their outdoor living space and make it an extension of their home. And they are more adventurous now about how they transform that space because there are so many more options,” said Eric Barthelemy, director of sales and marketing for Stone-Mart Marble Group. “Outdoor areas are considered rooms without walls. You want the same individual expression on the inside as on the outside. But you design the outside for the specific reason of how it will be used.” Key factors to consider when selecting a surface that best suits an outdoor space are affordability, sustainability, individuality and style, he added. “Homeowners are embracing the multitude of options travertine and marble offer when considering current and future décor for their outdoor living space.” One of the splashiest ways to liven up an outdoor area is to integrate pools, spas, waterfalls and fountains into the landscape. Landmark Pools has been designing, building and installing ways to showcase water-focused features for decades. Their professionals can create an aquatic environment inspired by nature, complete with manmade boulders, a zero-entry pool with a water line level with the deck or a continuous cascade over a borderless, negative edge as well as a fire pit and sitting area surrounded by water and built within the footprint of the pool. Replacing the free-form, resort-style pools that were once popular are more contemporary designs with straight lines. Also out of vogue are deepwater pools that could accommodate diving boards. “Today people want contemporary, clean lines and are opting for shallower pools that are five feet deep, at the most. The shallower pools allow for more activities like volleyball and accommodate kids playing in all areas of the pool,” said Bart O’Connell, CEO of Landmark Pools. Adding a bit of bling to the backyard setting is the latest in swimming pool accents, glass tile finishes, or jewelry bands, that reflect light and add a special sparkle to the water. Swimming pools continue to be a big selling point for families who are buying or building their first homes. Even grandparents who may have retired and moved to a new home want a private pool for themselves as well as for their grandchildren. Of course, no outdoor area is complete without functional, yet fashionable, furniture that beckons guests to recline, relax and really relish a natural outdoor setting.
By: Mary Lou Janson “People are treating outdoor living spaces like they do the inside of their home,” said Hollie Driscoll, business development manager for Just Grillin. Her company crafts the outdoor living experience by designing and building outdoor kitchens, fire pits and offering luxury outdoor furniture. “It’s inviting to have the comfort of the indoors, outdoors.” With the growing popularity of outdoor kitchens, dining sets suitable for areas fully exposed or partially under cover are definitely in demand along with other key pieces. “We’re seeing a huge trend in clients purchasing large tables that can seat up to eight people,” Driscoll said. “We hear and see, more often now, the need for items that can host a good amount of people.” She recommends investing in furnishings made with a wood finish or wrought aluminum coating that can withstand the weather. Wicker is another good choice for Florida that appeals to a lot of homeowners. “Rather than buying cheap furniture that you’ll throw away after a year or two, a good set will save you in the long run,” Driscoll said. “You can easily change the fabric, the colors and accent pillows if you want to shake up the look. The warranties on the brands we carry make the items worth it. We keep everything in stock and on file going back to the 1970s so when it’s time to add or replace a piece, we have exactly what you need, even discontinued items.” Finally, it’s important to make almost everyone feel welcome while entertaining under the sun or stars. One way to guard against uninvited guests like mosquitos, unbearable temperatures and soggy storms that can ruin a good time is with the help of specialized products and services. A-NIKS Outdoor Comfort Solutions offers state-of-the-art turbo cooling systems, outdoor heaters and pest management treatments that can make any outdoor area more hospitable. “A lot of people are spending up to a half million dollars on their back yards then find they can't enjoy being outside. We specialize in controlling those elements that enhance outdoor living,” said Al Erturk, A-NIKS president. From bug spray made with botanical ingredients to awnings, shades and sun covers that can be adjusted according to whatever direction is in need of protection, to electric-, gas- or propanepowered heaters to air cooling technology, with or without misters, A-NIKS can transform any patio or pool deck into a year round, outdoor sanctuary. “No job is too big or too small. Typically we can have most installations completed within four to six weeks from the time they are under contract,” added Erturk. “We are a licensed pest control contractor, licensed aluminum contractor and a general contractor. No one else does all that we do for outdoor comfort. We make people’s lives better.”G

Rock of Ages Stones may have ancient beginnings, yet they’re at the core of today’s hottest flooring trends.
R
oll with it: Stone flooring never goes out of style. It sure does change, though. New shapes and hues bring a modern vibrancy to rock-hard surfaces. What’s more, fashion-forward homeowners mix and match finishes and textures to create a refreshingly contemporary look using a material with a long history. To learn what’s cutting edge with this most natural of underfoot products, we spoke with flooring guru Eric Barthelemy. As director of sales and marketing for Stone-Mart (stone-mart.com), a specialist with two Tampa Bay stores plus two more further south along the Gulf Coast, he’s a go-to source for style-savvy shoppers. Here’s what he says is selling today.
44 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
By: Rona Gindin Tread Lightly Lighter marbles are selling briskly as we enter 2018. “Customers are choosing white to light beiges and earth tones,” he says, pointing to products like the ivory Diana Royale, creamy latte Ephusus and dotted Cappuccino, which is a shade darker. “We are even seeing the Shellstone, which really pops.” This option, a white tile embedded with fossil shells, is popular on lanais as well as inside homes. Also on the pale side are travertines; vein-cut versions are all the rage. “Those are unlike all others,” Barthelemy notes. “They are cut against the grain, which really exposes the bedding [the inside of the stone] and shows color variations. People are excited about those.” Line Up Planks are for wood, squares are for tile, right? Not anymore. One of the biggest changes in flooring is that many people are installing stone planks in their homes. Some are a wide 12 inches by 24 inches, others more like traditional hardwood at 6 inches by 24 inches. The result is striking. “It’s the wood look, a striated look [with horizontal lines], that shows a lot of movement throughout the stones,” Barthelemy observes.

Color Me Blue Suppliers are selling travertine in more color options than ever, Barthelemy reports. In addition to the creamy and tan hues, grays and blues are finding their way into homes – or, more specifically, onto home exteriors. “A dark gray-blue marble called Ocean has multiple options,” he shares. This option isn’t a true blue like the actual sea; rather, it’s laced with rivers of bluish and/or grayish ribbons. He sees it “not just under your feet” but on walls, on claddings (natural-stone wall coverings) and in signature pieces such as decorative inserts. Let’s Talk Texture Since shoppers are so fond of their neutral-colored stones these days, one might think their flooring would be bland. Not so, in large part because those with a keen eye go a little kooky with textures and colors. “People are being bold,” says Barthelemy. “They’re not afraid to think outside the box. They’ll use the same natural stone but with two contrasting finishes – maybe one on the floor and another on a bathroom wall or a kitchen backsplash.” Others might install a solidcolor floor with inserts of a different texture or hue. Another type of variation: tumbled versus polished or filled, within the same stone family. The benefit? “The room will have layers of depth, like a painting, because each stone or finish has a multitude of different color variations from the earth, and the contrast will bring that out.” All Natural, All the Time With porcelain and ceramic, cork and concrete, glass or even rubber, folks have long mixed and matched various flooring for contrast. “They’d just go to a different material,” Barthelemy recalls. Now, the movement is toward only natural flooring choices. “With the multitude of color and texture options on the market, we see customers using a mix of natural tiles to change the tone while the color palate remains the same.” The results? Enchanting. “You can’t replicate the depth that only Mother Nature can provide.”G

dR Home Trend #1: Nature Reflects Back Indoors Living in Florida means we can incorporate inspiration from the beautiful landscape around us into our home decor. Owner Suzan Decker Ross elaborates, “The natural elements in design reflect the beautiful waterfront location in this case.” Examples include a Nautilus shell art, coral lamp, and succulents nestled amongst the silver-leaf branches. Refracted light disperses through the crystal prisms in the chandelier, and a silk slub running through the grasscloth wallpaper adds an element of sophistication to the room. A bedroom is another perfect space to bring the soothing coastal flair indoors. This sophisticated and elegant design features soothing spa blue and neutral driftwood color tones, reflecting the home’s waterfront location right on Clearwater Beach. Incorporating visual interest is key, like adding in a variety of textures, including silk, wood, metal and shells into the space. Photos courtesy of Decker Ross Interiors
Trend #2: Nautical Nod to Cording Outdoors Cording is a big trend in outdoor furniture, adding such rich texture to your outdoor space. And, Kettal from Spain leads the trend, but you’ll see other examples hitting the market. “Bitta is characterized by a combination of aluminum frames with seats of braided polyester and comfortable cushions,” says General Manager Eric Cross. “The aim is to create dense braiding that would still let the air through, reminiscent of the boats.” These cozy nests — available in natural colors — are perfect for sitting back and relaxing. Check out the Bitta sofa in the Sarasota showroom today. Photos courtesy of Home Resource
Trend #3: No Glass Ceiling Here A beautiful custom ceiling adds that extra special something to your space, and really makes your home stand out from your neighbor’s. While custom ceilings are not new, homeowners are adding unique touches to add extra emphasis on this feature. “Geometric fretwork in the faux wrought-iron recessed ceiling detail adds a unique design element to this modern tropical waterfront home,“ says Decker Ross. The crystal chandelier has a hint of the tropics with the silver-leaf palm frond detail, and custom-made designer draperies accent the ceiling with a fun, colorful tropical floral print of mustard, citrus, blue and mint. By: Melinda Tam Orlando Trend #4: Going Rustic with Barn-Door Inspiration If you’ve been on Pinterest in the last year, you’ve seen the rise of Mason jars, barnyard gatherings and pastel colors, but more Tampa Bay residents are incorporating this rustic trend into their homes with statement furniture pieces. Interior Designer Lydia Mason explains, “This piece is very popular for us. Our clients love the sliding barn door–style and whitewashed wood with the wood top.” Not ready to swap your entertainment center for the trend? Consider adding it in with a smaller piece like a side table or throw pillows.

Trend #5: Transition By Blending Homeowners are paying special attention to the flow of their home’s interior and exterior spaces, thanks to well-respected interior designers. This is especially important for homes that open to an exterior space, which is quite common here in Tampa Bay. Principal Enrique Crespo elaborates, “I have one house I designed that opens to the exterior, so I continued the same colors out there to tie the areas together. Outdoor spaces have been evolving over the years with fabrics, furniture and area rugs that look more and more like products used in the interior, which helps create an extension of the inside and doubles as living and entertaining spaces.”
Trend #6: Being Bold With Balance There’s a right way to go bold in your home decor, and there’s a wrong way. Some homeowners can make the mistake of going too bold with too many colors, several texture selections and mismatched style. Instead, be bold in one element, like your art selection, but then keep the rest of your space on the classic side. “We developed a sophisticated, clean-line, contemporary yet minimalist design” explains owner Decker Ross. “The neutral color palette enhanced the room’s bold, colorful art selections, as the homeowners support local artists.” The custom-designed wine bar was also made by a local craftsman. Small Spaces, Big Impact Your home’s smallest spaces have the potential to make the biggest impacts.
hey say the best things come in small packages, and I’d argue the same is true for small spaces. We spend so much time focusing on the look of our statement rooms — the kitchen, the living room, the office, the master bedroom, our outdoor entertaining space — that the smaller nooks and features like our bedroom closets and home elevators take a backseat. Well, these spaces are coming front and center as we dive into what’s new in the marketplace specifically for them. I started first exploring the customized world of home closets, because I’m a girl with an extensive shoe collection … enough said. Jack Green, owner and president of the Closet Factory locations in Tampa, Orlando and Jacksonville, happily showed me some of the latest and greatest projects he’s recently completed for homeowners just like you. Closet Factory happens to have 52 locations nationwide, which makes Jack an expert in creating dream closets. Closet Factory understand that everything in your closet is an expression of you, and your closet system should be no different. Whether your closets are walk-ins, reach-ins or dressing rooms — or if you are looking for more space, better organization or even your own boutique — the company has the vision and creativity to make it happen. Jack shared three key trends he sees sweeping the market in residential closets.

By: Melinda Tam Orlando LED Lighting “LED lighting has enabled lights to enter the clothing area of the home, which were code-prohibited in the past. Many electrical codes have strict limits on lighting within the closet, but that is all changing with the new generation of LED lighting. They run cool, last 50,000+ hours, and are UL-approved for lighting all areas of the closet. Dimmers, colored LEDs, remote-control options and batteryoperated lights for remote locations are additional features available with the LED lighting we provide.” Textured Materials “Textured materials are very popular. Modern melamine materials provide the unique ability to have very real simulated wood surfaces, which allows much greater wear ratings than real wood at reduced costs. We also have real painted and stained wood but really encourage clients to fully look into the new textured materials for real value.” High Gloss “The other trend is high gloss. If textured wood is not your thing, clients trend toward high-gloss accent pieces with alternate solid or wood color schemes. The high-quality gloss products are very scratch resistant, and used in the right places and quantity can be a costeffective, high-end look for any home-improvement project. We have even used this in our Motor Trend Brand garages.” - Closet Factory Wayne Smith, Senior Executive Sales Designer at Southern Closet Systems in Odessa, also had several high-end residential trends to share. Wayne and JoAnn Smith began Southern Closet Systems in 1983 after many years of experience as a custom furniture and cabinet maker, and they’ve always looked at building a storage system like building a fine piece of furniture. Every piece is custom-made with an obsessive attention to detail. Wayne shared these three key trends he sees popping up in Tampa Bay homes. Modern Touches “While the main function of a closet space remains the same, we do see a move from traditional finishes to more contemporary and modern finishes like in the door fronts. We have modern slabs and fine Italian linear options that a lot of homeowners really like. We are also seeing a lot of high-gloss finishes with whites and blacks that create a mirror-like finish, which is really popular. We see people looking for different looks that really complement the rest of their home and fit into their design elements. Dreaming Big “Homeowners are much more aware of what’s possible out there in the world of custom closets, and they are really asking for all kinds of things that they want us to do, and we can do it. We are doing rolling ladders in closets, remote-control wardrobe lifts that lower
clothing down from up high, large islands with glass tops for custom jewelry inserts, floor-to-ceiling jewelry cases with velvet lining. We design based on the needs of the customer, so if they give us a list of what they want, we will make it happen.” Upfront Planning “Homeowners come prepared with a lot of inspiration and research before we meet in a lot of cases. Thanks to several interiordesign sites, homeowners can spend hours looking at closets and really seeing what’s possible in advance. They will save 20 pictures for us to review, which really helps us nail the design and drawing upfront.” - Southern Closet Systems After seeing these beautiful closet creations, I picked my jaw up off the floor, and set out to explore the world of residential elevators. Zia Xiong, who handles marketing for Waupaca Elevator, cheerfully got me up to speed on this customizable space. Waupaca Elevator Company has been an industry leader in the design and manufacture of residential elevators with dealers throughout the US. Zia explained that it’s becoming increasingly important to have access to all levels of a home, ensuring that the ease of day-to-day living now and in the future. She also shared two key trends she’s seeing in residential elevators. Finishes “A home is a reflection of the homeowner’s own design tastes and personal style. By using combinations of woods, metals, inlays, glass or contrasting stains and wood varieties, a beautiful elevator cab can be created that will add lasting value to a home.” Preparation “Stacking a set of closets on each floor can be converted into an elevator shaft at a later date, when the time is right to install an elevator. Residential elevators can increase a home’s resale value and expand its marketability to a wider range of buyers.” - Waupaca Elevator Small spaces have just as much impact as your statement rooms, and these trends show that other homeowners are investing in these spaces in a big way.

T
Resorts World Bimini The resort stretches over half of the quaint Bimini island. Resort guests are welcomed by endless white sand beaches, a variety of pools and decadent food selections by top chefs from around the world. Tropical colors and crisp textiles brighten the decor of the lobby with Caribbean charm, leading to beautiful guest rooms and suites. The resort also offers condo options. Each space features floor-to-ceiling windows, modern décor and breathtaking views of Bimini’s turquoise waters. If you select the Exclusive Suites located on the first floor, your stay includes a private patio leading into one of the pristine pools. Decadent Cuisine As a guest, you will have multiple locations to dine. The resort dining includes The Tides, Asian Fusion, Hemingway’s, Monkey Business and The Beach Club. The Tides is a great way to introduce local Bimini favorites to your palate. The restaurant features a grand breakfast buffet offering sweet Bimini Bread French Toast. Other local favorites served throughout the day are fresh seafood, such as lobster truffle mac & cheese and conch salad. Conch (pronounced “konk”) has a similar texture to calamari, and is a culinary classic of the Bahamas. If you are looking for an intimate dining setting try Asian Fusion, this 24-seat venue is home to Top Chef Winner Hung Huynh. The open style restaurant allows guests to watch the chef create. Favorites prepared are sushi rolls, nigari sashimi and handmade dumplings. Hemingway’s, located in the resort casino, is an American style bistro serving up burgers and fries paired with craft beverages. You will not run out of dining selections while visiting the resort.
including therapeutic body massages, nourishing body and hair wraps, makeup and nail services. The spa’s goal is to create “harmony of body, mind and soul” for each client. Mission accomplished. Travel Into Town Adventures await when traveling into the town of Bimini. Driving a golf cart or riding a bike is the best mode of transportation while on the island. The charm of the small towns along the white sand beaches will whisk you away into the Bimini culture. Make sure to stop by Edith’s Pizza on your tour of the island. The homemade pizza is something your taste buds will not forget anytime soon. For seafood fans, try the area’s staple conch dish from Stuart’s Conch Stand or Joe’s Conch Shack. Each location serves fresh conch daily. If you are in the mood for a sea adventure, Bimini is one of the top ten snorkel destinations. You are in close proximity to the sunken S.S. Sapona. The ship is from the Prohibition era and now sits in the waters full of colorful fish and stories to unfold right in front of your eyes. As you can tell, the new Resorts World Bimini compliments the island feel from its décor to its decadent food selections. The staff will keep you informed of events at the resort and in town. Enjoy the serenity of the resort during your stay…you will feel worlds away in Bimini! G
Find Serenity The turquoise waters are the perfect back drop to finding complete serenity during your stay. The Serenity Spa and Salon offers a variety of services to relax the mind, body and soul. Entering the spa you will see the beauty of Bimini through windows that stretch the width of the luxurious space. Each room is draped in shades of soothing blues and earth tones. In this environment, the body simply relaxes. As a spa guest, you are able to choose from multiple treatments

STORY BY ED JONES | PHOTOS BY FERRARI S.p.A.
t the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, Ferrari debuted the new 812 Superfast, a true V12 masterpiece. The release of this car fits perfectly in Ferrari’s timeline because 70 years ago to this year they released the 125 S, a V12 automobile that would start the Prancing Horse’s history. If the name “Superfast sounds familiar to you, that’s probably because of the 500 Superfast, which was produced from 1964-66. These models were supposed to be donning the name “Superamerica, a name we’re quite familiar with. However, the name was changed to Superfast before all was said and done. Underneath the hood of the 812 Superfast is a massive 6.5-liter V12 engine that’s capable of 789 hp and 529 lb-ft of torque. With these specs, this new Italian becomes the most powerful car featuring a V12 that Ferrari has ever created. Ferrari states that this was made possible in part “by adopting a 350 bar direct injection system for the very first time
on a high-performance engine and pairing it with variable geometry intake tracts conceptually derived from those of naturally-aspirated F1 engines. Mated to this engine is a dual-clutch transmission. With 80% of its power available at just 3,500 rpm, the 812 Superfast can rocket from 0 to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. What’s more, it has a top speed of over 211 mph. It’s been noted that this is “the most powerful and fastest Ferrari in the marque’s history. Of course, this notion does not include the LaFerrari. For handling, Ferrari has included Electronic Power Steering (EPS) for the first time. With the addition of EPS, the 812 Superfast can use its V12 to its fullest potential when being pushed hard around a track. Also aiding in the car’s handling is the latest version of the automaker’s Side Slip Control and, for the first time, the Virtual Short Wheelbase 2.0 system (PCV). As a true successor to the F12berlinetta, the 812 Superfast exceeds expectations in just about every department.

“All of the distillers we’ve trained with are very good mentors.”
n the summer of 2015, U.S. Special Forces veterans Scott Neil and John Koko and their friend Elizabeth Pritchard spent a month in Yellowstone National Park taking advantage of the natural wonders that surrounded them - climbing the nearby Grand Tetons, trekking for 10 days across the landscapes and riding a Mule Train through the park. During their adventures out west, the trio happened upon Grand Teton Distillery and came to know the owners who “really had a passion for their vodkas and their products,” recalled Scott. Inspired by their visit, they decided to route their drive back to Tampa via every craft distillery they could find along the way. “They [the craft distilleries] were owned by families or friends, and each had a similar story,” explained Scott. “There was a passion and purpose behind the business.” By the time the three returned to Tampa, and after John, a Kentucky native, had researched craft distilling, they realized it “became a very viable business for us as a group of friends.” John introduced Rob Schaefer, another U.S. Special Forces veteran, to Scott and Elizabeth, and American Freedom Distillery was off to the races. The team tapped into a worldwide network of veteran-owned distilleries and dedicated a substantial amount of time to the learning process. In August 2016, they reached out to the owner of Wolfburn Distillery, himself a veteran of the British Royal Marines, and traveled to Thurso in the far north of Scotland to train with the Wolfburn distillers, as well as with several other distilleries in the area. A few months later, in October 2016, the team crossed the pond again for Ireland to train on the oldest working still in the country at
66 www.duPontREGISTRYtampabay.com
the Kilbeggan Distillery, between Dublin and Galway. Ironically, Kilbeggan’s head distiller’s daughter lives in the Tampa Bay area, and when he vacations here he stops into American Freedom to check their progress and offer advice. “All of the distillers we’ve trained with are very good mentors,” said Scott, whose title with American Freedom Distillery is Doer of Things/Operations. Not losing sight of their senses of adventure, the American Freedom Distillery team participated in a sailboat race from St. Pete to Havana, Cuba in March, aboard a 84-foot boat with the Rum Rekker logo on the main sail, displaying Old Norse word for “warrior”. After finishing second in their class, they visited Cuban distillers, including Havana Club and Legendario, to learn about their rums. One of the products that American Freedom is crafting is an American bourbon, which by definition has to be made of at least 51% corn and stored in American oak barrels. The team’s attention to detail didn’t falter when it came to the barrels, they sought out family-owned Barrel 53 Cooperage in Higbee, Missouri. “The American white oaks in the Ozarks are said to be the best for barrels,” said Scott. During a visit to the Ozarks, the team watched the coopers - or barrel makers - from start to finish: from cutting down an American white oak to cutting the wood to dry out to shaping the stays and charring the barrels. “Part of our culture is to include lands far and wide,” explained Scott. “We’re taking that same approach as we’re learning about this business. We’re not rushing just to open. The easiest part will be the day we open; it’s everything leading up to that.”
By: Susan B. Barnes That same mentality took hold when it came to finding the right space for the distillery. After looking in Ybor City and Channelside in Tampa, the team made their way to St. Pete’s Warehouse Arts District and “the perfect location” at the corner of 22nd Street and 5th Avenue South. “It’s a little bigger than we thought we needed at the time, but now it’s just the right size” said Scott. “Finally, we found just the right one.” More than a year into renovations, as much careful thought and attention to detail has been put into the design and aesthetics of the building as into the distillery’s products, led by Elizabeth. Fashioned after a Scottish distillery, the wooden beams that cross the ceiling came from a tobacco barn in Kentucky, and the interior windows through which guests can see the stills are from an old factory in New Jersey. “We’ve been traveling the country looking for finishes that represent who we are,” explained Scott. “When you walk into the distillery, you’re going to be amazed. The water and fire features represent the process of distilling alcohols. Everything we discovered from our travels around the world will be reflected inside.” When American Freedom Distillery opens in November, in addition to offering tours and tastings, it will also house a separate restaurant, American Neat, that will be open for noshing from earlyafternoon into the evening. The restaurant’s menu features seasoned meats cooked on an open-flame atop various woods, including bourbon, rum, port and sherry barrel woods. A raw bar will also be available; after all, “bourbon and oysters go together so well,” says Scott. While all of the moving parts have been coming together, the distillers have been hard at work. Partnering with other craft distilleries at a larger production facility in the Midwest, American Freedom is already producing 100 barrels of bourbon monthly to start the aging process. “It’s a way for American Freedom Distillery to produce more than our small artesian stills can produce locally,” explained Scott. “Our partner production facility where we send our distillers to run the larger still using our proprietary mash can produce almost 100 barrels a day, where as we can produce only two a day. It helps us grow.” As it continues to grow, the American Freedom team is staying true to themselves and is involved with the Veterans Artisan Distillers Guild, wherein they help other veteran entrepreneurs become distillers, offer employment at the St. Pete distillery and connect with other veteran-owned distilleries around the country. Philanthropic endeavors are a part of the American Freedom culture, too. A portion of the proceeds from sales of Horse Soldier Bourbon - inspired by Bob Pennington and Mark Nutsch, Commander and Deputy Commander (respectively) of the Special Forces Soldiers known as the Horse Soldiers in Afghanistan after 9/11 - will cover maintenance, upkeep and awareness costs of the 18-foot bronze “America’s Response Monument” that watches over the Ground Zero Memorial in New York City. Bob and Mark, also owners in the distillery, will be part of American Freedom’s traveling Whiskey and War Stories Series, holding events, tastings and hosting private functions. G

Black Rock Bar & Grill
hen Michigan entrepreneur Lonny Morganroth decided to open a restaurant in the tight-knit community of Hartland, Michigan (about an hour northwest of Detroit), he set out to create a concept that set itself apart from the others. Seven years ago, in October 2010, he opened the doors of Black Rock Bar & Grill, where dining is “more than just a meal, it’s an experience.” Combining family recipes, a passion for food and a 755-degree volcanic stone - a cooking style Lonny had seen whilst traveling overseas - the Morganroth family enjoyed immediate success: Black Rock Bar & Grill was voted the number-one steakhouse in Michigan for three consecutive years. To grow their success even further, the family entered a nationwide search for “America’s Next Top Restaurant Franchise,” and won first place in 2013. Two and a half years after its debut, the restaurant brand opened its first Florida location in Orlando in May 2016, followed closely by Carrollwood in August 2016, and Brandon in November 2016. Today, 10 Black Rock Bar & Grills are found in Michigan and Florida, with more on the way - by the end of 2018, another eight restaurants will open in Michigan, Ohio, Florida and Illinois. Guests at the Carrollwood and Brandon locations will find a tempting menu filled with sandwiches, salads, seafood, burgers and even hot dogs, and, of course, tempting desserts, but it’s the steaks that take center stage at Black Rock. Ranging in sizes from six to 14 ounces, and cuts from sirloin to New York Strip to filet, the steaks come to the tables atop 755-degree volcanic stones and guests cook them to their temperature preferences. Not sure how long to cook your steaks? No worries! Black Rock servers walk guests through the cooking process with Sizzling Guidelines that outline cooking times. For example, to cook a steak medium rare, the recommended cooking time is 25-35 seconds on both sides; shrimp, scallops and lobster should each be cooked for one minute, both sides. “I can tell you that if you ask people what drives them to Black Rock, it’s the steak on the rock,” says Paul Samson, president and founder of The Franchise Edge, who works closing with Black Rock Bar & Grill. “There’s just nothing like it.” “Come in and experience it for yourself,” adds Paul. “We’re a family-oriented restaurant, you’ll have a blast, and you’ll enjoy the steak tremendously.” Black Rock Bar & Grill is open for lunch and dinner daily, and Sunday brunch. An express lunch is available weekdays for those on a tight schedule.

Local Woman Warrior Continues to Honor September 11th “Everyone should be someplace to honor the events, victims and heroes of 9/11. There is not a better place to be than our Memorial Event. We promise all who attend that this will be an event you will not soon forget.” - Jo Brower Photo courtesy of Remember Honor Support
o Brower of St. Petersburg is living proof that helping others can get you through the most difficult times in life. She has chosen not to be a victim to life circumstances and instead, channels her pain for good. Her brave choice to help others has indeed impacted our community for the better and we are so lucky to have Jo here in Tampa Bay. Jo raised a son as a single mom, but tragically lost him in a motorcycle accident many years ago. This was only one of the personal losses she would face in life. Jo then reunited with her soul mate, John Stross, and believed life was on the upswing. Then tragically in 2014, John was diagnosed with leukemia and passed away soon after. Anyone would agree that throwing in the towel was understandable after all this tragedy, but Jo found strength in her faith. She was led to carry on Remember • Honor • Support (RHS), a non-profit dedicated to helping military, first responders, and their families. Jo originally co-founded this mission with John Stross and bravely decided to carry it on throughout all of her adversity. After a trip to MacDill Air Force Base, her interest in the military sparked. She had met some of the Generals who helped her greatly appreciate their mission. Jo and John wanted RHS to be more than a fundraiser so it became a way to bring the community together. Jo has since realized it is a gift to be able to write a check to organizations that help local heroes. RHS allows the community to continue honoring those that give so much to keep our country safe and free. Proceeds continue to support the needs of our warriors and their families. RHS’s main fundraiser, the Patriot Day Memorial Event on 9/11, has given nearly $500,000 in its five-year history. This year, the three beneficiaries of RHS’s efforts are Gold Shield Foundation, an organization that helps the families of police and first responders killed in action; Stay in Step Spinal Cord Injury Recovery Center; and Warrior2Warrior, a group dedicated to preventing veteran suicide.

Brower understands what it means to lose a child, perhaps this tragedy has helped her inspire others to carry on this mission. The event itself is not about making people sad, it is about reawakening patriotism. We can honor the lives that impacted the safety of our country and lift up the families that lost their loved ones. The Patriots Day Breakfast held on 9/11 brings together a diverse group of community members. It includes our St. Petersburg Mayor; combat wounded veterans, police officers, firefighters, civilians, and civic leaders. Our very own Alex Harris, co-founder of The Arts Conservatory for Teens (ACT) in St. Petersburg, will sing the National Anthem. The room will be filled with American flags, moving speeches, prayers, and an empty table to honor the memory of fallen heroes that forever leaves a lasting impression. The guest speaker this year will be Vice Admiral Sean A. Pybus (ret.). He is a career Naval Special Warfare SEAL officer with multiple Joint Special Operations duty assignments. He is sure to bring significant reverence to this astute event. For many Americans, the life-altering events of September 11, 2001 are deeply tucked into our memories. New Yorkers such as myself who lived in NY during this horrific event are forever grateful for women warriors like Jo Brower. Knowing this woman endured her own pain and still continues to selflessly give back to her own community is nothing short of inspiring. I believe people like Jo are unable to be deterred or distracted from what they understand is the reason they are on this planet. Jo Brower is a gem in our community and we hope you all show your patriotism and support RHS for years to come.G
