On 2 September the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) announced from Auckland, New Zealand, that Durban has been successful in its bid to host the Commonwealth Games of 2022.

President of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC), Gideon Sam, stated that the event will create an opportunity for the City to advance development on an economic and social level. Bid Committee Chairman, Mark Alexander, echoed this point, adding: “Through the Games we aim to build greater social cohesion, create opportunities for empowerment, boost prosperity and ensure equality; while also fast-tracking economic growth in our country”. In addition to the benefit of improved infrastructure, the event is expected to attract up to 200 000 visitors, with an anticipated contribution of R12 billion in direct expenditure.
It is a moment to seize and firmly anchor our position as a decisive force in sports worldwide.” Mr Tubby Reddy, CEO of the Bid Committee thanked the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Commonwealth Games Associations for honouring Durban with their decision. He recognized the significant roles played by the people of Durban, the Minister of Sport, Mr Fikile Mbalula and his Cabinet colleagues, the provincial government of KwaZulu-Natal and the City of Durban, in ensuring the success of the bid. CGF President HRH Tunku Imran said: “Over more than eight decades, many great Commonwealth

cities, nations and territories have hosted the Games in order to build peaceful, prosperous and sustainable communities, inspired by the actions and achievements of our Commonwealth athletes, and underpinned by our values of Humanity, Equality and Destiny. Our friends from Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa are now primed to make the most of that responsibility and opportunity, and it gives me very great pleasure to welcome the South African City of Durban as proud host of the XXII Commonwealth Games. As a movement, we stand together to welcome and support the very first Commonwealth Games on African soil.”

THE
Earning the nickname ‘Big Easy’ as much for his famously effortless golf swing as for his big heart and philanthropic efforts, Ernie Els has become synonymous with all around excellence!
Alongside Ernie Els signature wines, there will be an extensive collection of selected quality wines, (featuring up and coming winemakers) many of which will be available by the glass. To complement the wine selection, a comprehensive portfolio of local craft beer, fine whiskeys, cognacs and cocktails has been compiled to ensure that there is something for everyone. While the focus is on comfort, and creating a ‘down to earth’ ambiance, the culinary emphasis will be on fresh, locally sourced produce, free range and organic meat and fresh seafood, with the restaurant open for lunch and dinner daily. The open plan interior of the restaurant features a Chef’s Table and open Kitchen, where diners can watch the chefs at work, in the heart of the restaurant. A large bar with an impressive wine bottle display, a dramatic floor to ceiling backdrop and a copper bar counter, dominates the east end of the space. Outside, the Terrace with upper and lower decks for al fresco dining and chilling, features a lush green foliage wall where guests can fully immerse themselves in the magic of the outdoors and Durban’s idyllic weather.

WORLD SURF CITIES NETWORK
Surf in the City Durban recently hosted the annual reunion of the international network of Surf Cities – the World Surf Cities Network (1 to 4 July). The gala event, at which Shaun Tomson was a keynote speaker, also celebrated the 50th anniversary of Surfing South Africa, the entity responsible for regulating the sport of surfing in South Africa. The World Surf Cities Network is a collaboration between ten surf cities from Europe, Africa and Australia. The network aims to develop surfing as an income-generating activity, by collaborative effort, promotion of tourism, research & development, knowledge sharing and innovation management, the latter being the forte of the network’s leading city, Donostia-San Sebastián. The other nine cities are Durban (Africa), Arica (Chile), Ericeira (Portugal), Gold Coast (Australia), Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Newcastle (Australia), New Plymouth (New Zealand), Santos (Brazil), Viana do Castelo (Portugal). A Surf City is defined as “an urban area in which surf, surf culture and employment related to the surf industry, represent an important proportion of the economy, society and local culture; where the surf industry, is formally recognised by the local institutions”, according to University Lecturer, Ian Eddie.
The SA Surf Legends Academy was launched at the SA Surfing Legends Charity Gala Dinner, held in May this year. Shaun Tomson is very excited about the initiative, and has offered to assist where he can to develop these young surfers. Image Credit: Quiksilver

JOHN SMIT - SHARK, SPRINGBOK, SUPERSTAR
Veteran Springbok and most-capped South African Captain of all time, John Smit, makes the transition from anchoring scrums to skippering the Sharks., this time from the boardroom!.
For South Africa’s rugby sweetheart, the big game pretty much kicked off in Durban. After being hand-picked by scouts during his matric year at Pretoria Boys High, he relocated to Durban to join the first intake of boys to be groomed for a career in professional rugby. The momentous 1995 World Cup, which saw Nelson Mandela handing the coveted Webb Ellis trophy to Francois Pienaar, had taken place only year before, thus flinging open the change-room doors for professional rugby. Being passionate about sport, Smit initially intended to study Physiotherapy at Tuks. But who could turn down an offer to play for The Sharks! “I was a fanatical Sharks supporter”, he laughs “one of two in the whole of Pretoria Boys High”. Smit allayed his parents’ concerns about his education by enrolling for a B-Com at The University of KwaZulu-Natal in Pietermaritzburg. When he first signed the contract with The Sharks he had no idea what lay ahead. Eight months into his studies, it became apparent that he would have to commit his time entirely to his rugby career. “I was on tour all the time, and wasn’t going to get much done”, he explains. “The deal with my dad was that, if I had not done anything of substance by the time I was 20, I would finish my degree”.
That “something of substance” was about to materialise for the young Shark. The field of play was ready. His game plan? To aim for a position straight between the poles. It did not take long for Smit to draw attention from national selectors. Having first started out as a prop for the SA under-21 team, where he won 13 caps, he continued to play his heart out, but now as hooker, a position he went on to favour for most of his career. His international rugby debut was made at the age of 22, courtesy of his former coach, Nick Mallett, as a replacement in the victory against Canada on 10 June 2000. He did more than secure his place on the squad for the entire Tri-Nations, and was given the opportunity to run onto the field with the rest of the starting line-up, against Argentina on 12 November 2000. The rest, as the saying goes, is history. Smit’s relentless commitment and levelheaded approach, coupled with his natural ability to lead, made him an obvious choice for coaches such as Jake White and Pieter de Villiers. In addition to serving Sharks fans for 12 seasons of super rugby, he appeared in a record 46 consecutive Test matches between 2003 and 2007, captaining the Springboks on 83 occasions. He proudly represented South Africa at three Rugby
World Cups, but it was the 2007 tournament in France, escalating in a nail-biting final on 20 October, that rocketed him to stardom. As the Springboks’ 50th captain, he led them to their 15:6 victory over England, bringing the Cup back home once again. In 2011 Smit announced that he would make his last appearance in green and gold, at the upcoming Rugby World Cup. His playing career, he had decided, would continue at club level, with the Saracens in the UK. Sadly the 2011 World Cup did not have a happy ending for the Springboks, and after being knocked out by Australia in the quarter-finals, Smit formally retired from international rugby. He was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame (formerly the IRB Hall of Fame) on 24 October 2011, whilst still playing at club level. But Durban’s rugby hero was not to stay away from his beloved province for too long. After two years abroad, in the first quarter of 2013 the announcement was made that John Smit had been appointed CEO of the Sharks rugby franchise. He commenced this position on 1 July. Rugby fans united behind Sharks chairman Stephen Saad, and coach John Plumtree, in welcoming him home.

Q
Q
I guess that’s what I’d be to my kids as well. Daily, what I try to be, is the same in everything. Be fair and consistent, in good times and bad times. When you’re cross with our kids, when you’re happy with your kids… they must always know, that no matter how you are emotionally, that you behave in the same way. Consistency is probably the thing we lack most in the leaders that we look up to currently. Consistently honest, consistently understanding the difference between right and wrong. Not allowing your emotions and your self-enrichment to change who you are in that moment.
The final whistle, when it went. People always ask what I felt… I felt a sense of relief more than a sense of elation, because there was just so much on the line and it was a four year journey.
As role model and mentor, what daily habits of success do you practise?
Q
Do you still incorporate a stringent fitness regime in your daily programme?
Yes I do. Not currently as much as I should do, but yes. I normally train at least five out of seven days in the week. I try and get a minimum of five hours, but some weeks I’ll get 20 hours in.
Q
Was it tough to transition from skippering a team to running a rugby franchise?
Yes, it has been tough. It’s been exciting, but there’s been a lot that I’ve had to learn as well. A lot that I’ve brought with me as a rugby player and a captain, in terms of running teams. I think teams, across the board - no matter whether it’s business, family or sport - work on the same basis of respect and understanding. I must say, the first six months were very tough. Once I became a little bit more aligned to the job and understood the business, it became a lot more enjoyable as well. The more you do it the easier it becomes.
Q
What do you miss most about your years as a professional player?
I miss the tours. The camaraderie. Being surrounded by mates all the time. Having those special moments and memories that are created as a by-product of being in a team, on tour for four or five weeks… I guess those are the moments. Other things I miss are the crunch games - the All Black test to win a Tri-Nations, a World Cup final - those pressure moments where everything is on the line.
What is your most cherished memory of the 2007 Rugby World Cup victory?
So when that whistle went, and that reality of us having won it (kicked in), it came as such a relief to me that I was delighted.
Q
Compare the pressure of the change room to that of the conference room.
Look, I think the difference in pressure is that, in rugby your pressure is for 80 minutes a week… it comes down to 80 minutes a week; whereas in business (in this environment), the pressure is continuous. You don’t get to see your results as quickly. In rugby you know in 80 minutes whether you’ve been successful or you’ve failed. In business it’s continuous - there are so many things that are going on at the same time – and the results aren’t immediate. Everything’s a work in progress, so the pressures sort of continual. You’ll go to bed at night and as a rugby player you’ll say: “I did my lineouts, I did my scrums… practised my tackling, you know, it’s been a good day today” or “I missed three lineouts here”. In business you go to work and you think “How much progress did we make on these last 17 things we’ve been working on?” The pressure is continuous, as opposed to rugby where the pressure is sort of stop-start on the actual event.
beaches. Beautiful facilities. Beautiful stadiums, and so much to do from a sporting point of view.
Q
What do you love most about Durban and how long have you lived in the city?
The weather and the fact that it is a little bit laid back. I think people in Durban get to enjoy life go by. I moved here in 1996, and have owned a home here since. We have been in and out… France for a year, London for two years, but we’ve always had a home in Durban.
Q
What is your personal game plan for 2016?
Right now it’s more about what I can help this place to achieve, with The Sharks. When I took this job my personal goals got put on the back burner. All I’m really focussed on is making the team the best it can be.
Q
Sharks Rugby recently signed a partnership deal with Durban Tourism. Please tell us more... I think it’s strange that we’ve taken so long to understand the value that we add to each other - Durban as the greatest City in South Africa and The Sharks as the greatest franchise, being right in the palm of each other’s hands. We can now officially become what we have always been, which is the ambassadors for Durban - as a massively successful brand, promoting Durban as a city all over the world.
Q
Why Durban? In your opinion, what makes the city the sporting capital of Africa?
First of all we’ve got weather. The weather is unbelievable! I moved to London for two years and my kids were never outside. My son who loves the outdoors would jump on the trampoline, in the snow, with his raincoat on. The only time he puts shoes on now, is when he goes to school, because he has to. We also have facilities that are second-to-none. Our Municipality has put together a sport zone here, that can’t compare to any other in the world. We have the perfect climate. Beautiful
A SNEAK PEEK INTO JOHN SMIT’S PHILOSOPHY Smit’s personal success philosophy boils down to maintaining balance in life, striving for consistency, and the value of exemplary role models.: “I was brought up well. I had good parents that set a good example. They were successful in their own right: My mother taught for 42 years and my dad was an engineer for 40 years. I went to a good school and I was shown the right pathway at school. I guess throughout my life I was taught to try to achieve the best I could in all that I did and to strive for balance”.

LIFE IS A (RUGBY) BALL FOR
Dawn Dunn MEET DURBAN’S VERY OWN LADY RUGBY, WHO SPARES NO PUNCHES WHEN IT COMES TO PASSIONATELY AIRING HER VIEWS ABOUT THE LATEST GAME.
Dawn believes in grabbing the ball and running with it Her infectious laugh has made her a hit with East Coast Radio listeners, and possibly even warded off a few yellow cards (figuratively speaking, of course). When Dawn is not researching and reporting on the latest rugby issues, she is busy running her own events company, Red Dawn Events, and being a devoted wife and mother. A lot of balls to juggle (rugby balls, of course), but as the saying goes… if you want to get something done, ask a busy person.

Q How did you come to be East Coast Radio’s Lady Rugby? I received a phone call from the ECR station programme manager 3 years ago and he wanted me to come in and represent a female voice in rugby. Apparently, they did a call around and my name kept coming up. I went into the studio the first time with Darren Maule and the rest is, as they say, history. Haha, I do not think that Darren will ever be the same again! Q When did it dawn on you (pun intended) that the rugby bug had bitten you, never to let go again? When I attended my first match at Gowthpoint Kings Park, I was hooked and have never looked back. I just love and live for the game. The energy in the stadium invigorates me. Q What does it entail, being East Coast radio’s rugby correspondent? It makes for a very busy week especially when we have home games. Shows are live Mondays and Saturdays. There are media briefings to attend and player interviews to execute. Sometimes there is breaking news and I will often get a call from Trending Tonight for clarity on an issue. Q Do you often get to spend time with the players, one-on-one? Yes, in studio and I sometimes watch the games with some of the players that are injured. For this year’s Asics Springbok jersey launch, in Cape Town, I got to spend quite a bit of time with the Boks and managed to get some great interviews out of that. Q You spare no punches in expressing your views, one of the things that East Coast Radio listeners love about you. How do the players respond? That is a very interesting question. I have been on radio for 3 years now and I get mixed reviews, especially when they play badly and I call them out on it. Players get very sensitive because we are close and they are part of my family, however, they must realise that I only have their best interests at heart. Q You make no secret of the fact that you have a soft spot for John Smit or “Smittie”, as you refer to him. What qualities do you admire in him? I just adore Smittie. He has led his country as Bok Captain to 2 RWC (Rugby World Cups) with integrity and composure. He has always given his best to the jersey that he puts on. He recognises the critical role that females play in keeping the ship steady and his devotion to his wife Roxy and kids is just wonderful. He has a wonderful sense of humour and has an endless cache of rugby anecdotes that are priceless. His latest role at the Sharks has been the most challenging so far, however, I know that he will work on getting it right. It will take a bit of time however.
Q You mentioned during a recent interview with Terence Pillay that your favourite player is Bismarck du Plessis? Does he know? Yes, he knows, lol, my nickname for him is Bliksem (running into him is likely to cause severe concussion!), however his brother Jannie, aka Doc, also wants to claim the Bliksem title. Willem Alberts is the ‘Bone Collector’ and Cobus Reinach is my pocket rocket! S’bura is aka Gangsta because he released a rap single this year. Mvovo is blitzkrieg! They are all my absolute favourites, especially Marco, who leads from the front. I really hope that Jean Deysel, (aka Deysie) and ‘Tera’ Mthembu recover soon and get back to fighting fitness. And yes, I have nicknames for all of them. Q Although you are a faithful Shark, you are first and foremost a SA patriot. Have you stocked up on your green and gold branded wardrobe for the Rugby World Cup? Hahaha. So funny! Yes, I have 2 Bok RWC 2015 special edition jerseys, together with the matching scarves and peaks. My week-end clothes are normally a rugby jersey and track pants, with my pearls. Q How long have you lived in Durban? All my life. The kids are older now, so I really would like to start travelling again, to watch more rugby overseas. That is my ideal holiday. Q What do you love most about being a Durbanite? There is so much to do with the kids, including going to the ruggers, beach etc. We often take family trips into the Midlands or the Berg. I just love coastal holidays as well. The weather in Durbs is nearly perfect! Q You also own and run a successful eventing company in Durban, which requires you to move out of the limelight and into the background at times, to do “behind-the-scenes” work. Is it a difficult transition to make? Yes, it is sometimes...when you have a function of 500 people to see to, and all the guys want to do is discuss Springbok selection! I have a good team behind me, though, that do their best to make things as easy as possible. Q You are also a mom. You seem to manage so many facets of your life with such energy and enthusiasm. What is your secret? I truly love what I do. For me it is a privilege to be able to follow my passion and also to work with the amazing people that I do. My kids are just so very divine and I enjoy every day with them. It is difficult sometimes to juggle school dates and important events, however, family comes first.

SURFING LEGEND, ENTREPRENEUR, INSPIRATION
Shaun Tomson was riding waves before surfing was really regarded as a sport. He fondly recalls his family’s regular outings to North Beach and Bay of Plenty, where his dad taught him to swim and surf, also to cherish and respect the ocean. “Surfing used to be something that was kind-of a solitary activity. I think my father was one of the first few people, and some of his friends at the beach at Bay of Plenty, to turn it into something that was familial”, Tomson explains. The family and community values that were instilled in him at this early age are intrinsically woven into his character. Tomson was hooked, and two years after his first surf lesson (age 10), went on to win the boys’ division of the South African National Championships. In 1973, (age 17), he won the first of six consecutive Gunston-500 titles (the 500 referring to the first place prize money of R500, courtesy of the sponsor). This Durban-based event, which was also occasionally held at Nahoon Reef in East London, used to be the largest international pro surfing event outside Australia and America.
32
| www.durbanstyle.co.za
Still heading for backline at every given opportunity, Tomson completed his (at the time compulsory) 12 months of service in the South African National Defense Force, before commencing his Business studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal. Whilst competing in the Gunston-500 that year, professional surfer, Ian Cairns, suggested to Tomson that it was time for him to face the big waves of Hawaii. So when his exams were finished, he set out to do exactly that. It was a winter that would change his life, but also the face of surfing, forever. Tomson had been to Hawaii before (a Bar Mitzvah present from his dad), but he couldn’t wait to return. Joining up with Australians Ian Cairns, Wayne “Rabbit” Bartholomew, Peter Townsend, Mark Richards and Mark Warren, 18-year-old Tomson launched himself into the sport with renewed vigour on the feared and revered North Shore, and wrapped up the winter by winning the Hang Ten Pro Championships at Sunset Beach. Armed with an ear-to-ear smile, $5000 in prize money and a plane ticket, Tomson’s next mission was to surf the pro events in Australia.
Born and raised in Durban, IPS World Champion, Shaun Tomson, had world-class waves breaking virtually on his doorstep. But great opportunities do not guarantee great achievement. Hard work, passion and relentless determination carried him to the crest of his personal wave… a wave of success, and it would be the ride of a lifetime!
The following season, in 1975, Tomson and his friends collectively won every event in Hawaii. They were essentially the first to become serious pro surfers, revolutionizing the sport in many ways. Their unparalleled passion and energy, coupled with their spectacular manoeuvres at Back Door and Off the Wall, would soon launch them into the annals of surfing history. Once caught on film in the epic surf movie Free Ride, their surfing safari gave birth to a new generation of surfers, known as the Free Ride Generation. Tomson’s wide stance, very different from the traditional method, gave him improved control over the distribution of his weight on the board, and marked the conception of the modern barrel-riding techniques. He even drew some ridicule and a few laughs from the resident surfers, when preparing to paddle out in his extreme rocker pink banana, shaped by Spider Murphy. But those laughs would soon be stifled and replaced by gasps of amazement, for the innovative curved shape of the board gave him an advantage on the big waves, and would also become the forerunner for big wave technology in the future. In addition to his surfing contribution to the movement, Tomson’s disposition earned him the role of spokesperson and “face” for the group. Whilst continuing with his studies 1976, he competed in the new International Pro Surfing tour, finishing in 6th position. The following year he became a full-time professional, putting in the hours that took him to the crest of his wave: winning the coveted World Championship. From that pinnacle he continued to ride the winning wave, as a travelling pro surfer, for 14 years, moving with the times from a single fin, to two and eventually to the tri-fin design. At the age of 30 he won his last major event, then decided to call it a day, and rode back to shore. Tomson’s board meetings were about to take on a different meaning entirely! He founded, managed and sold two $50 million clothing brands – Instinct in the 80’s and Solitude in the 90’s, held executive positions with lifestyle brands Patagonia and O’Neill, wrote two bestselling books Surfer’s Code and The Code – Power of “I Will”, produced and award-winning documentary film Bustin’ Down the Door. He is a Business Administration and Finance graduate from the University of Natal and recently completed a Masters in Leadership Science. He is a World Surfing Champion, an inductee in the Jewish and South African Sports Hall of Fame and the US Surfing Hall of Fame. Tomson has been described as the sport’s most influential tuberider (Encyclopaedia of Surfing 2011), one of the greatest surfers of all time (Surfing Magazine 2004) and one of the most influential surfers of the century (Surfer Magazine 1999). He is a board member and ambassador for Surfrider Foundation and the Santa Barbara Boys & Girls Club. He lives with his wife Carla and son Luke in Santa Barbara, California and still finds time to chase the perfect wave.

WHAT IS IN THE PIPELINE FOR SURF LEGEND
From riding the wave of success to stirring up waves of change. Shaun Tomson’s talks about his childhood in Durban and his passion for inspiring young people to be the best they can be. In three words, how do you think your family and friends would describe you? (laughing) Well, I think the first word’s a surfing word – Stoked! That’s a word common to surfing that’s transcended into mainstream culture. It means enthusiasm, love for life… I think that very much describes how I am. I’m also loyal and loving. Please share some of your childhood memories of Durban. Well, I grew up on the beach, and in Durban my earliest memories are of my mom and dad taking our whole family down to the beach, and my mom packing a hamper of food and sitting under the umbrella right there on North Beach, and everyone coming around to share in what she brought… just that wonderful family atmosphere on the beach. My dad teaching me how to swim and then body surf and ultimately surf, right there on the beach at North Beach and the Bay of Plenty. So the beach is a very special part of my being and part of my past and also part of my present, and I love to walk along that beach and surf those beautiful waves.
surprised and excited to see it, and I think that all the people involved did a tremendous job. What projects are you currently working on, and what do you have planned for the future? Well, the latest project is that my latest book here in the United States, which is called The Code – The Power of I Will is going to be released over the next six months by Pan Macmillan in South Africa. And along with it I’m going to be undertaking a school tour to talk about the subject matter of the book, and also to inspire young people to make positive decisions in their life and to write, what I call your life code, which is 12 lines, every line beginning with “I will…” In addition to that we’re going to be connecting with schools all over the country. I mean, I love talking to young people. I love inspiring them with positive purpose.
What was your first reaction when you saw the revamped beachfront for the first time? Sure, I’d heard about it, but I was reluctant to go down there and see how the changes would affect my memory and would I still feel those roots in Durban. I must say I was blown away in a very, very positive way. I think the changes made the beachfront a lot more accessible to a lot more people, and made it available just for those long wonderful walks and biking, so I was very, very pleasantly
34
What advice can you give to young people setting out on their journey? I think what’s really important is to write your life code. I’ve had incredible results with it, and thousands and thousands of young people have had wonderful results too. It’s a simple process - it takes 20 minutes. So for 20 minutes you need to block off the outside world. You need to turn off your cell phone. You need to turn off your computer. Just get a sheet of paper: old school, and write 12 lines, every line beginning with “I will…”That’s it! Really simple. Pen in hand, thoughts in head, and write down your life code, your life mission. And keep that, and revise it every six months. I think it gives you guidance. I think it gives you motivation. I think it gives you a clear path, as to what you want to do, what you want to be, and where you want to go.
In a nutshell, how does life in Montecito compare to life in Durban? I think the lifestyles are very similar. I think because the water is so warm in Durban, the ocean just seems to be so much more accessible. I think that the ocean is a much bigger part of everyone’s life in Durban, than it is here in Montecito. Our water’s pretty cold in California, so generally the only people that you find in the water here are surfers or people on stand-up paddle boards, whereas in Durban there are body surfers, boogie boarders, swimmers, canoeists and paddle-ski surfers. I think there are way more people in the water, from varied backgrounds and doing different sports, compared to here.
from the tour in 1989. Places like Mavericks (sure, that would have been one of the scariest waves - I never got to ride that), a place called Teahupoo which is in Tahiti, which is another incredibly scary wave. Initially when I started surfing on The Bluff in Durban, a place called Cave Rock - that w nd it enabled me to be successful as a professional surfer.
It’s interesting, if you read one of Malcolm Gladwell’s books - he talks about this ten thousand hour concept – it’s not his concept, but he talks about: how to be successful at any given thing, whether it’s music, sport, whether it’s something creative or something mechanical, you need to put in ten thousand hours. There’s a clear lesson there that success doesn’t come quickly.
Name some of the scariest waves you have ever surfed... Well, the scariest wave was always the Banzai pipeline, for me. That was the deadliest wave in the world. I won the Pipeline Masters - I was the youngest guy to win it at the time, I was 20 in 1975, and that record has been broken. But that was a deadly wave, killed more people than any other wave - that was on the island of O’ahu. Then there was Waimea, which was another wave close to it, just about a mile down the track, and that was the biggest wave in the world, that was a very scary wave. So those were the two scariest waves in the world. A lot of other waves have been discovered since I retired. I retired

Success doesn’t come easily. So you need to put in the hours. You need to put in the practise, to get good at anything. But first of all you need to have a goal, you need to have a mission, you need to have something to strive for – you need a plan. Writing “I Will” in front of what you are going to do gives clarity and focus and commitment – it is like making a promise to yourself and no one wants to break a promise to yourself. LifeCode is a personal covenant with today and tomorrow and I like to think it is like a little magic tool that anyone can use to start a journey towards tomorrow. SHAUN TOMSON ON Movies For me the greatest: Chariots of Fire. I love that movie! Food My wife Carla, we’ve been married for 27 years, she’s just the most important person in my life, along with my beautiful son, Luke. She cooks me this rosemary chicken that’s just unbelievable! Exercise I think surfing. I don’t do any other exercise other than surfing, so for me, I just think of that wide expanse of horizon, as I’m paddling out to get the next wave. Silence Meditation. I think we all need that time of solitude and that time of peace to just think about life. Talent Discipline and hard work! Family I think of my beautiful wife and my amazing son, and then, my mom and my sister my brother, my brother in law, my cousin; this whole concept of extended family and how important it is to have everyone connecting with one another, and that incredible love that I feel from my family and for my family.

Paddling out I just see that expanse of ocean. That horizon. That feeling that, wow that next wave is going to be the best one! Achievement I think of discipline. I think of hard work and I think of passion.

South Africans love football and have made it our own… from the colourful makarabas, the zealous cries of Laduuuuuumaaaa on match days, even the controversial vuvuzelas that shot to notoriety during the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
THE AMAZULU FOOTBALL CLUB
preparing for a
Comeback Formed in 1932 by Zulu migrant workers, the AmaZulu Football Club, was once known as Zulu Royals. They are nicknamed ‘Usuthu’, after a Zulu war cry. King Solomon kaDinizulu, the grandfather of His majesty, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, was an influential figure in the developing the club and King Goodwill Zwelithini remains the club’s honorary patron. Over the years the club’s triumphs were sadly compromised by a number of changes in ownership, many brought about due to the changing eras in the country. A couple of name changes later, the club has prevailed, and with Spar on board as a sponsor, the Club is more dedicated than ever. The club has accomplished great victories over the years, notably in 1972 when they won the National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) championship. However, their most recent major achievement dates as far back as 23 years ago, when they won the Coca-Cola Cup, in 1992, under South Africa’s most successful coach, Clive Barker.
36
| www.durbanstyle.co.za
The Usuthu have always stayed abreast of their KZN neighbouring clubs, managing to produce well-known players like Raymond ‘Sugar’ Xulu, Joel Faya, Wellington ‘Chippa’ Khoza, Simon Magugula, Neil Tovey, George Dearnaley. Under Dr. Patrick Sokhela and with longterm sponsors, Spar, backing them, the club has been in a resurgent phase since 2005. The closest the KZN club came to adding to their trophy cabinet, was when they were runners-up in the Nedbank Cup in 2010, when they were beaten 3-0 by Bidvest Wits, with Neil Tovey as coach. The last time AmaZulu qualified for the much-coveted top eight log finish in SA football was in the 2011/12 season, when they finished 7th on the log. The following seasons have had their set of challenges for the club, with finishes from 14th, 9th and subsequently relegation hitting AmaZulu at the end of the 2014/15 PSL. The rebuilding process however looks very positive under Head Coach, Steve Barker, who returned to take the reins towards the end of last season.

Q Q
After The Power of Love was released in England, at what stage did you realise that you had encountered creative gold? It was actually before POL was released I considered myself very fortunate. POL was the last single off of my first album - all previous singles had amazing success throughout Europe and other territories except for England and the USA. Having a number 1 in England opened up the entire world for me in that I was able to work with a larger community of very established producers and duet partners.
Q
Having grown up with a father who was a working opera singer and a concert-pianist mother, you were no doubt surrounded by the classical genres. How did you discover that your singing style would be any different? I always respected what my parents did for a living but never gravitated to that genre. I always had a great respect for the voices and classical music. I wanted to be able to write my own music and that is impossible since the operas are already written. The sheer devotion it takes to be an outstanding
Do you regard yourself as a songwriter with a golden voice, or a singer who writes great songs? I always wanted to be “just” a songwriter when I was a teenager. When my father was having demos of my voice made, the response was not always positive since my voice didn’t seem to fit a stereotype of what I visually looked like. Back then there were very specific rules about what a type of voice should look like. Many of my peers had this same roadblock. We all found out that our unusual sounding voice was a plus and would allow us to be able to have wonderful careers.
Q
You have sold over 50 million albums in your career, yet you seem unusually grounded. What keeps you humble? For me I think it is that I grew up with working musicians and at a young age saw the pitfalls of singers/musicians who were swept up in momentary success only to find out that is not what lasts. Of course I don’t mean my parents! But perhaps some of their acquaintances and producers/musicians I have worked with.
Q
What is your favourite song to perform, at the moment?
That is a very hard question to answer! It is different every day, depending on my mood. That is also what keeps music ever fresh to me.
Q
You have visited South Africa a number of times. What makes this visit different? Every visit I make to S. Africa is a joy. This visit will be my 10th and I am so happy to be performing 13 shows in S. Africa.
Q
We read that you studied the violin at Julliard School of Music in NYC. Do you play any other instruments? I studied the violin and was told I was talented but it wasn’t an instrument that I gravitated to. I am capable of using the piano for songwriting, and basic practicing but I would be less than honest to say I play piano well. To me and many singers my voice is my instrument.
Q
Have you been to Durban before? I have not. I have heard so much about Durban and look forward to it.
Q
What can your Durban audience look forward to on 1 November? I will be performing, of course, the hits. And songs that I love and have seen audiences enjoy us performing for so many years.

WELL BEEF
HUNG
It’s like you’re in the heart of Argentina. The hustle and bustle of a packed restaurant greets you time and time again, along with friendly smiles from Justin, Myles, and their awesome team. Somehow, it always seems to feel like home and that’s the way it’s been since the doors of Bar Ba Coa first flew open many years ago. Offering a taste of Argentina and a flair for classic and new age flavours, the kitchen at this Umhlanga gem is bursting at the seams with succulent steaks, twists on old favourites and interesting taste
inventions. It’s been said that their chimichurri is the stuff of legends and is the secret to what keeps guests coming back for more.
Coupled with great steaks and friendly service, Bar Ba Coa is also big on wine. Their Sociales Malbec is a firm favourite on the wine list and the cellar is always fully stocked, ready to complement every meal served. A deliciously decadent Mozart ice cream station waits for sweet-toothed visitors to get their scoop. Although, it seldom waits for long…
Whether it’s a relaxed lunch, business meeting, special occasionor “just because,” you never need a reason to visit Bar Ba Coa. With a functions and an exciting Asado menu that can cater for parties from 30 to 200 guests, any and every occasion is one to celebrate with fantastic food. Bar Ba Coa’s grill uses only the best Namibian Lumpwood charcoal so for a real taste of Argentina (with a little local flavour), book a table at Bar Ba Coa. You may just get to rub shoulders with a few sporting legends!

s t t a W k e FROM SWINGING A r e D SQUASH RACQUET IN DURBAN, TO EXPOSING RACKETS ON CARTE BLANCHE.
Award-winning journalist and Carte Blanche presenter, Derek Watts, is no stranger to us, but we tend to associate him with hidden cameras and the big smoke of Johannesburg.. We discovered that he is also a brilliant squash player and an honorary Durbanite! Did you know that Derek Watts not only coached squash, but ran a squash club in Durban for a couple of years? Zimbabwe-born Derek Watts started out as a journalist in 1974, for the formerly-known Rhodesia Herald, before joining the SABC as a writer, and eventually a sub-editor. Although he still enjoys the multi-faceted nature of journalism, being limited to copywriting was not exactly his idea of a fulfilling career at the time. So when the opportunity came up for him to practise sport (instead of just writing about it), he lunged in and took a shot at it. The club was situated opposite the bowling alley on Brickhill (now Sylvester Ntuli) Road and was named “The Disc” Derek tells, “subsequently called the slipped disc”, he jokes. Derek made the most of his time in Durban, managing the club, playing and coaching squash, surfing and soaking up the sun along Durban’s beaches. He speaks very fondly of those years, during which he got to know (and fall in love with) the city. But Derek’s destiny was about to launch him into a different direction, and after two marvellous years, he bid the city a sad goodbye. SABC had called, offering him the chance to present on Supersport. It was that year, 1985, that marked the start of a significant new chapter in Derek’s life. He took to presenting like Chad le Clos to water, and in 1988 he received a phone call from esteemed producer, Bill Faure, telling him about “a new show”… Now, Derek may be in the region of six foot three tall, but he has zero tolerance for tall stories! Carte Blanche is all about uncovering (and telling viewers) the truth; and that’s what
investigative journalism is all about. Derek was on board right away! The ground-breaking show not only took off, but proceeded to rake in awards, and before long became an institution in South African households. Uncovering fraud and corruption became the name of the game, and it took hidden cameras, thorough detective work and nerves of steel to get things done. The job is very demanding, and when a story breaks there is no time to wait.“I had to throw away my diary”, Derek explains, “and thank goodness I have a very patient wife, because this can interfere with your dinner plans”. Aside from Carte Blanche, Derek is in demand as an MC and Guest Speaker. His most popular presentation titled “You have the right to know it all”, is essentially an exploration of journalism in SA over the past 25 years. He also talks about the programme and shares stories from behind the scenes. He has the unique ability to share these stories – some that are really no joke, in a manner that is not only informative, but laced with his signature dry/semi-sweetbrand of humour. To wrap up: Derek still plays a brilliant game of squash, writes about cars and visits Durban whenever he can.
The Watts family (a few years ago...) celebrating Gucci’s first birthday. Gucci - a mini yorkie, is the boss, Derek tells us.
WORK ASIDE Derek is a devout family man and animal lover.
He is married to wife, Belinda and has two children (now grown up), a son - Tyrone and a daughter, Kirstin. Derek owns a holiday home on the North Coast and still visits Durban as often as he can. Tyrone works at the eLan Property Group, based in Greyville, thus the city has become the location for family gettogethers, pets invited. He laughs as he recalls a recent trip to The Oyster Box in Umhlanga, when Tyrone and his girlfriend’s Dachshund, Beanie, got to enjoy a delectable morsel from their doggie menu. Talking about food! One of Derek and Belinda’s favourite restaurants, when they are in town, is Butcher Boys. “I had the best steak I’ve had in a while, there”, he tells us “during our most recent visit to Durban”.

CULTURE & CUISINE
CELEBRITY GASTRONOME TERENCE PILLAY GOES IN SEARCH OF AUTHENTIC INDIAN CUISINE AND FINDS HIMSELF AT JEERA ON DURBAN’S BEACHFRONT...
When my friend Nic Burden and I socialise, it usually involves food. As foodies, we both enjoy trying new and inventive menus at a variety of restaurants. And this is how we happened on Jeera, Suncoast Hotel and Towers’ signature restaurant on Durban’s Golden mile...
TERENCE PILLAY
In an illustrious career spanning 24 years, print, radio and television personality Terence Pillay has seen it all and indeed, done it all. Moving from a presenter in front of the camera on shows like KZN2Nite, Good Morning South Africa, Impressions, Free Spirit, Your Good Health and Front Row, this charismatic mikesmith has in the last six years taken on the airwaves at East Coast Radio in Durban, in his sometimes controversial, no-holds-barred show The Good, The Bad and The Ugly on the radio station’s Wednesday morning breakfast show, East Coast Breakfast. He also hosts In Conversation With Terence Pillay, a cuttingedge Monday Night Talk show on the same station, aimed at the adult listener looking for expert opinion and lively debate around some of the more controversial topics affecting life in South Africa.

Both Nic and I eschew buffets but Jeera’s colourful menu allows for a culinary exploration of an array of delectable authentic Indian dishes from all corners of India; and all in a buffet setting that’s reminiscent of a wedding reception in Jaipur. The name Jeera is therefore particularly apt since jeera is in fact the Indian word for cumin. Cumin, sometimes spelled cummin is a flowering plant native that’s found anywhere from the east Mediterranean to India. Its seeds are used in the cuisines of many different cultures, particularly Indian, in both whole and ground form. Jeera is a stylish, modern restaurant that caters to anyone looking for fine Indian cuisine. At the helm of the restaurant’s sophisticated and appealing approach to food is Executive Sous Chef Sandren Govender. When it comes to spices, you would be hard pressed to find anyone more knowledgeable about the subject than this quietly spoken, talented chef. Sandren says while he trained as a chef, his passion for food, in particular Indian cuisine, was ignited early in his youth, by his mother and grandmother from whom he learned traditional techniques and flavours. So now when he blends spices for what are fast becoming legendary dishes at Jeera, he nods back to his days as a youngster intently watching his mother cook and learning from the experiences.
If you’re ordering a la carte, the whimsical Millionaire’s curry - a luxurious feast of crayfish, prawns, scallops and line fish will take your taste buds on a luscious spice journey. This dish is at top of the menu, in my opinion, and caters for those who fancy a bit of opulence on their plate.
The experience begins with a cleansing ritual using a sandalwood scented scrub paired with a chai tea drink to warm you up before the starter, which is a lime, Jeera and mandarin exfoliation paired with a smoked salmon blini topped with lime and mandarin dressing.
At the extreme end are the chef’s gourmet bunnychows, that come in a tasty variety of butter chicken, lamb curry and prawn curry filling all on one plate. Diners now have the opportunity to sample all three vibrant flavours in specially baked petite bread cases.
For mains, you can indulge in the cinnamon, clove and mustard full body massage followed by a yoghurt, mint and honey body wrap. This is complemented with an aromatic chicken tikka wrap served with a braised jeeraraita.
“Durban is the home to the humble bunny chow,” Sandren explains. “We on the other hand have decided to re-invent this popular dish by adding a five star touch to it. We have created a gourmet experience by serving this dish with premium curries served in custom made bread. It doesn’t get better.”
The rose water and coconut pedicure is incorporated in the dessert course and paired with the sweet decadent flavor of traditional Indian sweetmeat, coconut ice. It really doesn’t get any more luxurious than this! For booking you can contact Jeera on: 031 314 7878 or visit them at Suncoast Towers, 20 Battery Beach Road, Durban.
After a chat with Sandren I found out that Jeera prides itself on using fresh, hand-ground spices in all its dishes and Sandren sources prime cuts of meat and poultry, and a premium selection of fish and shellfish for the restaurant. And as if this isn’t enough, Suncoast Towers Hotel Spa is bolstering its own therapeutic menu to compliment the authentic Durban Indian flavours served at Jeera; a first for the city.
The Jeera menu is vast and sumptuous and there’s something for everyone. And if the buffet doesn’t take your fancy, then a la carte is an option. But of course with dishes like an array of delectable curries, butter chicken, a variety of salads, pickles, Indian condiments and desserts, the buffet is the way to go.

WITH OVER 21 YEARS OF CULINARY EXPERIENCE, SANDREN GOVENDER KNOWS HOW TO PUT THE SPICE BACK IN YOUR RICE WITH ONE OF JEERA’S MOST POPULAR DISHES RECIPE Lentil, Spinach and Cashew Nut Curry INGREDIENTS: 1 ONION, DICED • 2 TABLESPOONS OIL • 2 TEASPOONS CURRY POWDER • 1/2 TEASPOON MUSTARD SEEDS • 1/2 TEASPOON TURMERIC • 1 CUP MASOOR DHALL (BROWN LENTILS) • 1/2 TEASPOON SEA SALT (TO TASTE) • 1 (14 OUNCE) CAN LIGHT COCONUT MILK • 1 3/4 CUPS WATER • 1/3 CUP WHOLE CASHEWS • 1 CUP FRESH SPINACH, ROUGHLY CHOPPED • FRESH CORIANDER
Method: • In a large pot sauté the onion in the oil over medium heat for about 5 minutes. • While the onion cooks get the rest of the ingredients ready to go. • Add in the curry powder, mustard seeds, turmeric and brown lentils - cook for another five minutes. • Be careful not to let the lentils stick to the pan by stirring frequently and/or adding more oil if necessary. • Mix in the coconut milk, salt and water. Bring to a boil then reduce heat to medium low. • Cover the pot and let simmer for about 20-25 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent it sticking. • It’s unlikely, but if you find the lentils have absorbed all of the liquid and is still not cooked, add a bit more water. • Once the lentils are cooked they will break down quite a bit and you’ll have a reasonably thick consistency. Stir in the cashews and spinach, along with coriander. • Give those ingredients about 3 or 4 minutes to warm through and then you’re ready to serve. • Garnish with additional coriander.
