The Man Who Brings Southeastern Antique & The Exchange for Antiques, Artists, Collectible Lovers Together in Person Work began early in 1981 as the clearing started on 100 acres on the Old Hwy 421 Road in Liberty. Only thousands of rocks lay ahead when the key of the tractor’s turned and the first of a whole bucket loads of rock began to fill. Vito and Mary Sinco had no idea that the burden of the first rock would be easy in comparison to the ton of paperwork that laid ahead for the next 35 years to help thousands of small antique dealers to sell their wares in an environment of the highest quality on the East Coast. As the dealers grew, so the attendance one, two, three, five, and later ten thousand. More employees for parking food service lodging is surrounding areas. Which meant jobs, jobs, and more jobs. Non believers just could not stay home and joined in the celebration of the excitement of the Liberty Antiques Festival. When I sat in Vito’s modest command center, all I could think of was how much he had done for North Carolina, small businesses, and the subsequent increasing of visitation to
our state’s Zoo. Liberty is small but magical as Rhonda Murray of Barn Art and Ole Time Hardware March 2015 Store that takes you back in time. As I had lunch with Bob Mowery after I met Vito, we talked about the organic event that Collectors & Samples always coincides with the Liberty Antique Festival – the run up of mileto-mile yard sales that line the highway to Liberty in Randolph County. Places in town like the Ya’ll Come Back restaurant and Chef Mark and Pamela Rutzen’s Smokehouse Bistro are always glad to see folks drive in to their small community to sell and buy treasures. The conversation soon turned to deep inventory for the Pickers, Pedals, Passions, & Blunders and the future possibility of brick-nmortar stores. Yes, Liberty is a special place and as this semi-annual event grows in the future, who knows?! Maybe the small town of Liberty will give a good shot it comes to the longest yard sale at topping the recorded! Guinness World - Dale Swiggett Record of Records when

Talk About a Serendipitous Moment... Remember that astronaut who sang David Bowie's "Space Oddity" on the International Space Station? Chris Hadfield is making headlines again—or rather, his flight suit is. Somehow the blue outfit ended up in a Toronto thrift store, CBC reports. "I thought, wow, what is a flight suit like that doing up there?" says Dr. Julielynn Wong. When she saw the "Chris Hadfield" badge on the jumpsuit, "My jaw just dropped," she says. She bought the suit for a mere $40. To make the find even more incredible, Wong, who studied space medicine, actually knows Hadfield, ABC News reports: "I trained with him; we actually had lunch," she says. She contacted him on Facebook and was able to confirm the suit's identity with a photo and some detailed information. So how did it end

"It's possible that it inadvertently got placed in a donations bag when he moved back to Canada after living abroad for 20 years." Now, she plans to use it in lectures she gives on space supplies. "This way, the flight suit is much more inspiring for the next generation

Go the Extra Mile for Your Customer by Providing Them Reference Material on Items The man holding your creamware baby’s plate is frowning. The longer he looks at that piece of pottery, the deeper the frown becomes. He’s hearing voices in his head. Once voice is calling him unflattering names. “You idiot!” it screams. “How could you have left the Roseville book at home? How are you going to decide if this unmarked piece is really Roseville or just some wellmade imitation?”
The other is a kinder, gentler voice. “Sure, the piece is Roseville,” it reassures him. “It looks like Roseville, feels like Rosevill. If it walked like a duck and talks like a duck...” The voices only confuse him. He’ll buy the plate if he’s sure it’s Roseville. But he has no way of determining whether it is. If only you had a Roseville book he could borrow. But you don’t. The piece of creamware goes back into

Rebuilding My Beloved Foxfire Book Set
In one of the last issues nearly five years ago, I wrote a small piece featuring a very unique set of instructional manuals that comprise what is known to Deep South natives and residents as the Foxfire Series. For those readers out there unfamiliar with what started out as a simple high school class concept ended up becoming a huge success in the print world of recorded oral history of Appalachian natives, do
some research into this fantastic must-have set of books that really shed a lot of light on the old ways of living. I had a half complete set a very long time ago and lost them all and several other treasured books in a move. So, I started rebuilding my collection with some help from other PPP&B staffers who gave me several books for gifts. The reason I love these books so much is 1. for historical value (tremendous!) and 2. one never knows if/when one is knocked back into the Stone Age by either a folly of man or whim of the Universe. By gosh, I know how to build a fire without a match or lighter! I was a Brownie and Girl Scout and those
life lessons that led to badges really paid off when it comes to survival of hard times possibly to come. I have fond memories of my great grandparents living in small rural communities here in North Carolina and so much of what is in these books totally resonated with me because it was an accurate accounting of life in simpler times. I highly recommend this book series for those out there who are into survival and prepper info, historical info on daily living in Applachian mountains, and a whole different sub culture living in deep hollers. It’s Prom Season...Does Your Daughter Want to Wear a Vintage Gown? Oh, the rites of Spring passage is the yearly procession of formal dances and proms that occur all across our nation. Men, make no mistake about it, this is a seminal event in a young woman’s life and not some trivial gig. The dress is EVERYTHING! So, your daughter has decided she wants to be different than the crowd and has expressed interest in wearing something ‘vintage.’ Parents, do not panic. First you must establish with your daughter what her definition of ‘vintage’ is compared to yours. A
whole lot of scrappin’ and fightin’ can be avoided by this first step. Once everyone is on the same page about said dress, then it’s relatively easy to go shopping. In most metropolitan places, there is at least a small handful of shops that carry or even specialize in resale of vintage clothing. Often times, treasure troves of vintage clothing can be had at Estate Sales and auctions. Perhaps there is a female relative who owns a vintage dress that is willing to loan out in hope that new life would be breathed into it.
There are shops online for those who have slim pickings in your immediate area. The photo below is cited from a cool website http:// w w w. r u s t y z i p p e r. c o m / vintagedresses/prom/ And of course, for the more adventurous of those out there willing to tackle sewing your daughter’s dress as a reproduction, there is always a pattern out there for all tastes. And for those who can’t manage to keep from sticking pinsn-needles in your fingers, there might be a talented tailor in your area.

Golf in the Great North State North Carolina is a state known for many things but what stands out the most - our wonderful love of golf. Our state is home to some of the most well known and best beloved golf courses in the world. Many a player has passed through our grand state swinging an iron or wood. Perhaps NC’s long history regarding this esteemed game is rooted in the fact so many settlers of this state were the Scots and the Irish. They brought their love of the game to the New World and indeed, set deep roots down in NC.
We wanted to tip our hat to one of the sport passions that could only yield up jokes such as ‘the reason why it took all day and all night to play 18 holes is because of fact that dragging dead partner (heart attack) around the golf course.’ ☺ Yeah, we’re pretty serious about our collegiate basketball AND our golf, folks. As for me, even though I’m a born and raised Tarheel with deep ScotsIrish roots, I never warmed to the game of golf. Don’t get me wrong! There is a

whole lot of Zen in knocking a tiny ball into a small hole from a great distance. But when someone hands me a golf club, I tend to do something completely different with it (remember, I am a martial arts teacher). ☺ - Renee Warren
From blunt wooden instruments of the old days to today's adjustable, insanely high-tech drivers, golf clubs have been getting better and better since the Scots gave us this frustrating, exhilarating pastime. 960–1279: Royals from China's Song Dynasty play chuiwan, hitting balls into holes with a set of 10 bejeweled clubs. 1400s: Despite earlier evidence of proto-golf in the Netherlands, Scotland gets credit for inventing the game. 1800s: Par for the course, golf makes its way to the United States. Players use 20 to 30 wooden clubs of various functions to hit featheries, hard leather balls stuffed with feathers. 1856: America's hickory trees get the shaft when Robert Forgan exports them to Scotland to make golf clubs. Harder persimmon wood is used for the club heads until drop forging allows for mass-produced iron heads in the late 1800s. 1931: Billy Burke becomes the first golfer to win the U.S. Open using steel-shafted clubs painted to look like wood. But there's no faking Burke's
unique grip—he only had three fingers on his left hand. 1932: Pro golfer Gene Sarazen thinks outside the sandbox to develop the modern sand wedge, and uses it in his British Open victory. 1939: Golf's rule-making authority decrees the use of no more than 14 clubs in a round but puts no limits on dorky apparel. 1959: Engineer Karsten Solheim invents a putter with more weight at the heel and toe of the blade and a thinner, lighter sweet spot. The novel design makes it easier for golfers to hit the ball straight. He quits his day job, creates the golf-equipment brand Ping, and makes a fortune. 1971: Alan Shepard takes one small swing for a man, one giant drive for mankind when he hits two golf balls on the moon at the end of the 29
Apollo 14 mission. The second travels over a mile. 1973: Lightweight graphite-shaft clubs become popular among women and senior golfers. The rest of the world —ahem, PGA Tour players— catches on by the mid-1990s. 1980: In Caddyshack, Rodney Dangerfield's character stocks his bag with a driver that dispenses beer. 1991: Callaway rocks the golf world when it introduces the Big Bertha stainless-steel-headed driver. Persimmon-headed clubs quickly become garage-cluttering relics. 2013: TaylorMade's R1 driver adjusts to 12 different lofts and seven different face angles, adapting the club to playing conditions. Isn't that cheating? - Cited as per Popular Mechanics, May 16, 2013

The History of Golf, as per Wikipedia Origins A golf-like game is, apocryphally,[1][2] recorded as taking place on 26 February 1297, in Loenen aan de Vecht, where the Dutch played a game with a stick and leather ball. The winner was whoever hit the ball with the least number of strokes into a target several hundred yards away. Some scholars argue that this game of putting a small ball in a hole in the ground using golf clubs was also played in 17th-century Netherlands and that this predates the game in Scotland. There are also other reports of earlier accounts of a golf-like game from continental Europe.[3] In the 1261 Middle-Dutch manuscript of the Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant's Boeck Merlijn mention is made of a ball game "mit ener coluen" (with a colf/kolf [club]). This is the earliest known mention in the Dutch language of the game of colf/ kolf as played in the Low Countries.[4][5] In 1360, the council of Brussels banned the game of colf: “... wie met colven tsolt es om twintich scell’ oft op hare overste cleet ...” (he who plays at colf pays a fine of 20 shillings or his overcoat will be confiscated).[6] In 1387, the regent of the county of Holland, Zeeland and Hainaut, Albrecht of Bavaria, sealed a charter for the city of Brielle, in which it was forbidden to play any game for money. One of the exceptions to this ordinance was “den bal mitter colven te slaen buten der veste” (to play the
ball with a club outside the town walls).[7] Two years later, in 1389, the regent Albrecht offered the citizens of Haarlem a field called ‘De Baen’ (the course) to be used exclusively for playing games – especially colf – because these were too dangerous within the city walls.[8] In 1597 the crew of Willem Barentsz played "colf" during their stay at Nova Zembla, as recorded by Gerrit de Veer in his diary: Den 3. April wast moy claer weder met een n.o. wint ende stil, doen maeckten wy een colf toe om daer mede te colven, om also onse leden wat radder te maecken, daer wy allerley middelen toe zochten.[9] (The 3rd of April the weather was nice and clear with a northeasterly wind and quiet, then we made a colf [club] to play colf with, and thus make our limbs more loose, for which we sought every means) Early golf in Scotland The modern game of golf is generally considered to be a Scottish invention. A spokesman for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, one of the oldest Scottish golf organisations, said "Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries, but golf as we know it today, played over 18 holes, clearly originated in Scotland."[10][11] The word golf, or in Scots gowf [g?uf], is usually thought to be a Scots alteration of Dutch "colf" or "colve" meaning "stick, "club", "bat", itself related to the Proto-Germanic language *kulth30
as found in Old Norse kolfr meaning "bell clapper", and the German Kolben meaning "mace or club".[12] The Dutch term Kolven refers to a related sport. The first documented mention of golf in Scotland appears in a 1457 Act of the Scottish Parliament, an edict issued by King James II of Scotland prohibiting the playing of the games of gowf and football as these were a distraction from archery practice for military purposes. [13] Bans were again imposed in Acts of 1471 and 1491, with golf being described as "an unprofitable sport". Mary, Queen of Scots was accused by her political enemies of playing golf after her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley, was murdered in 1567. George Buchanan subsequently wrote that she had been playing "sports that were clearly unsuitable to women". Golf was banned again by parliament under King James IV of Scotland, but golf clubs and balls were bought for him in 1502 when he was visiting Perth, and on subsequent occasions when he was in St Andrews and Edinburgh.[14] An entry in the Town Council Minutes of Edinburgh for 19 April 1592 includes golf in a list of pursuits to be avoided on the Sabbath.[15] The account book of lawyer Sir John Foulis of Ravelston records that he played golf at Musselburgh Links on 2 March 1672, and this has been accepted as proving that The Old Links, Musselburgh, is the oldest playing golf course in the world. There is also a story that Mary, Queen of Scots, played there in 1567.[16][17]

His swing was so pure and wide and flowing that his soul and golf's spirits seemed to merge as one. He learned to play with a tobacco stick as his club and small round pebbles as his projectiles. Because of his race he was required to travel north to establish credentials sufficient to participate in the great North and South Amateur in Pinehurst, predecessor to Augusta, golf's southern rite of spring. Poten-
tially the world's greatest golfer, his quest for immortality on the number two course is poignant and stirring. The author was born, reared and educated through secondary school in Lexington, Davidson County, North Carolina. He received his BA
degree in history from Wake Forest College in 1967 and his Juris Doctors degree in law from the Wake Forest University School of Law in 1970. He has been a practitioner of law in Lexington from his admission to the bar, he is married to Sandra Craver Snyder, and they have two daughters and six grandchildren. He is the author of seventeen books (three are multiple editions).
