Old Folks Humor I took my dad to the mall the other day to buy some new shoes (he is 76). We decided to grab a bite at the food court. I noticed he was watching a teenager sitting next to him. The teenager had spiked hair in all different colors - green, red, orange, and blue. My dad kept staring at her. The teenager kept looking and would find my dad staring every time. When the teenager had had enough, she sarcastically asked:

"What's the matter, old man, never done anything wild in your life?" Knowing my Dad, I quickly swallowed my food so that I would not choke on his response. I knew he would have a good one! In classic style he responded without batting an eyelid, “Got stoned once and had sex with a parrot. I was just wondering if you might be my kid." 14

LINDBERGH PHOTOS

Lindbergh kidnapping From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The kidnapping of Charles Augustus Lindbergh, Jr., the eldest son of aviator Charles Lindbergh and Anne Morrow Lindbergh, was one of the most highly publicized crimes of the 20th century. The 20-month-old toddler was abducted from his family home in East Amwell, New Jersey, on the evening of March 1, 1932.[2] Over two months later, on May 12, 1932, his body was discovered a short distance from the Lindberghs' home in neighboring Hopewell Township.[3]

s much as I love to go “picking” it wasn’t until recently I felt compelled to “pick” through my own family’s antique trunk of photographs. This particular photograph reminded me of one of the stories my grandmother would rarely share. One of my personal favorites being the story of my dad being mistaken for the LINDBERGH BABY! According to my grandmother and my father, the two traveled together by train from Eastern North Carolina to Washington DC on business. My grandfather was home with complications related to diabetes and could not travel. After arriving at the train station in DC they became separated from each other in the crowd. Two police officers noticed my dad was alone and saw how similar he looked to the missing son of Charles Lindbergh. When they asked him his name, he looked up at the officers and replied “Charles!” Mistaken Identity cont. next pg 18

My Dad

The baby is my father, with his father and grandfather My dad’s only memory was the officers were “nice & funny” and gave him candy. Granny found him with the police officers and thanked them for finding her son, not yet realizing the full scope of the situation at hand. Granny never gave a lot of details when recalling this particular event, other than it was a “nuisance” and that reclaiming her son was “swift”. I can only imagine! My grandmother was born in the 1880’s in eastern North Carolina, became a school teacher in a one-room schoolhouse before marrying my grandfather. My dad was the youngest of four boys, and born during the beginning of the depression. By the time I was

Even temperatures shooting to the high 90’s and topping out in trriple digits across eastern North Carolina could not deter all the bargain hunters on June 19 -20. No one really is sure what the true numbers are but a lot of folks did

various comics, toys, etc., a huge gust lifted the tent and would have flown across the soybeanfields if not for the quick reflexes of yours truly and Patricia Dowdy. Business was brisk and we had a delightful conversation with two gents cruising through after work. They found the classic and vintage t-shirt rack and purchased

The third annual Hwy 301 Endless Yard Sale event did not see rain but some areas experienced gusty winds that challenged poorly anchored tents. My wonderful father sent me this email with a bunch of old photos but this one in particular really caught my eye since its caption indicated this was a young woman working in the late 1920’s on a Florida alligator farm. Now, that must’ve been one heckuva’ job and one of the perks was an excellent physical workout. _ - Renee
