Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders
Colorful Memory Icons Are Never Forgotten It has been said once you learn to ride a bicycle, you never forget. But few remember why they did ride a bicycle. For me and my younger brother, it was for purpose and great pleasure. Maybe learning to ride was not the real issue but modifying the front forks of our bicycles to receive smaller wheels to carry larger baskets for our paper routes. Seeing was really believing that anything was possible, because whether it was t-shirts and shorts in the summer or thermals and gloves in the winter, there was always something special right around the corner in Ronnie Sox, Buddy Martin, or Jake King driveways. ‘Cudas, Road Runners, and Challengers of every funky color from Sublime to Plum Purple were in their driveways. Most
were Hemi’s with Michigan license plates. Memories of special times and places are quickly recalled by everyone and make car shows that much more special. As I pulled into the parking lot at the Antique Market Place
Hospice Benefit Car Show, one unmistakable Flamingo colored greenhouse profile made me smile. It was a custom lowered VW Van with a half a dozen or so girls and their brother or cousin having the time of their lives in their Granddad’s VW van. Collectors too are drawn to signature colors. One such 1
color is a 1957 T-Bird in Dusk Rose. One such example was tucked in the corner of the Antique Market Place Hospice Benefit Car Show. As I approached the owner, I teased Memories continued next pg
Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders is an eclectic mix of unique items, passions, events and bargains and the people who love them. Our mission is to provide more exposure on a monthly basis for antique and collectible dealers in order to connect to consumers who want to find those dealers. There’s always this unquenchable thirst to add to one’s collection and to find that ever elusive item, whether it be a piece of period furniture, a doll, a tea pot, or a vintage piece of farm equipment. We just want to connect folks so that everyone can buy and sell the things that we all love.
Memories continued
Quite a few classic cars where up For Sale and more than a few folks most assuredly were thinking seriously about buying the car of their dreams. Next week, we’ll have more great photos, results and info to share about this particular car show.
him about his UNC front licensed plate. He told me the story that the UNC plate dates back to the first time he saw a T-Bird at the Boar & Caste Drive Inn. He said everybody in the family referred to the T-Bird as the “UNCK” car. The Hospice Car Show at Antique Market Place was a good day for families and memories. After all Hospice is all about families and memories.
Leonard (of Antique Market Place) was in charge of locating the best Bling Awards. Above is a 1969 Camaro and below is the engine from a 1967 Chevelle 396 Rat motor.

One Common Blunder at Auctions __________________________________ You decide to attend your first auction. You arrive early and find a wonderful (legal) parking spot.
You take your time examining all of the wonderful offerings and their conditions and ask questions and obtain acceptable answers from the auction staff regarding the terms and conditions of the auction. You register and obtain your bidder number, which you place in a conspicuous spot in the hatband at the front of your 10-gallon hat. All is great when you de3
cide to bid on an item that you like about 45 minutes into the auction. The item starts at $5 and rises rapidly to $7.50, $10.00, $12.50, $15.00, $17.50 and bidding begins to slow when you bid $20.00. Eventually, another bidder offers $22.50 and you, after much consideration, place your final bid of $25.00. After a few anxious moments, the Auctioneer finally says the Auction Blunder continued next pg

word you have been longing to hear. "SOLD" seems to echo through the neighborhood. The Auctioneer calls out the number that you have displayed in the band of your cowboy hat and you have made your very first purchase. So far, so good. You stay at the sale for a few more hours, suffering greatly from the effects of the summer day on your allergies. You don’t bid on another item, but rather stay standing in the crowd, occasionally using your handkerchief, rubbing your itchy eyes and adjusting your now cumbersome Texas Ranger headgear. Finally, you decide for pay for your purchase and proudly take it home. After arriving at the cashier, you turn in your bidding card and get handed back a two page, single-spaced bill with over 20 items listed for several hundred dollars. When you finally regain you wits, you realize that every time you waved your handkerchief, raised your hand to your
eyes, or adjusted your sombrero, you had unwittingly placed a bid on an unwanted item. You turn and run, at top speed, the 2.4 miles back to your house, returning the next night to pick up your car at midnight and never attending another auction. Mistakes: 1. You failed to enjoy a beverage or auction staple hotdog from the lunch wagon; never a good thing to forget. 2. Hightailing it home is not good. When a mistake is made by either yourself or the Auctioneer, please bring it to the attention of the staff as soon as possible. Mistakes happen at every auction, and
most Auctioneers just want to get as much as possible, right. 3. Running that far in that heat could cause health problems. 4. Always remember your bidder number, and what’s with the hat? 5. Come back soon, auctions are fun! 6. If after all this, you do decide to employ some clandestine bidding technique, i.e. blinking an eye or wiggling an ear, please let someone on the auction staff know this prior to the auction. - cited by “Auction for Dummies” www.schmidtsantiques.com
Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders Lesson for the Week... Careful of who you take to an auction. If you take someone who has never been to an auction before, be sure to educate them on how certain innocent gestures can be misconstrued as bidding signals.

TIP of the Week... Cleaning Silver Jewelry Keeping your silver jewelry beautiful will allow you to wear it more frequently and enjoy it more. How do you keep your silver jewelry ready to wear at a moment’s notice? 1. Clean it after each use with a soft 100% cotton or flannel cloth to remove makeup, sweat, dirt, etc. 2. If your jewelry just needs a mild cleaning, you can clean it with a mixture of very mild liquid detergent and warm water. Be sure you rinse it well and dry it thoroughly with a soft cloth. 3. Many professionals swear by using baking soda or toothpaste on silver jewelry, while others say that they are too abrasive. If you don’t want to take the chance, then you need to purchase a silver spray or polish to clean tarnish off your jewelry to keep it looking beautiful. 4. If your silver jewelry has gemstones then you need to be careful cleaning them. Some cleaners can damage your gemstones. - cited www.mrscleanusa.com

Young folks not even out of high school and college started giving their dreams wings with their grasp of high technology. With Facebook becoming viral all over the world and the Tea Party Movement becoming a major political force almost over night, these viral network phenoms only confirm how quickly and widespread networks of like minded people now congregate online, grow and multiply. As a free internet publication, Pickers, Pedals, Passions & Blunders was designed to be forwarded to friends and peer groups which increases the potential for our humble publication to become ‘viral.’ This is in keeping with our initial mission of connecting buyers to sellers, as well as educating younger generations about the importance of preserving our heritage. With an initial data base of about 15,000 individuals and many groups, only hours after the first edition was sent out we started getting many favorable replies from all around the United States. Then after the second edition went out last week, even more emails poured in with wonderful praise and great suggestions of expanding our coverage to include more of the United States and Canada. Our staff would like to thank everyone for your comments and those who have emailed us requesting to be included in our data base. Rest assured, we are making plans to expand our coverage. As traditional printed publications have floundered due to declining readership, Pickers, 1 7
Pedals, Passions & Blunders was designed to bridge the gap for those of us who long for the old fashion magazine in hand and yet yearn to move into the 21s t century by ‘plugging in to cyberspace.’ Ending on this note, we hope everyone enjoys this week’s edition!
