Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders

The Antique Henry J Many people question our name. The name Pickers, Pedals, Passions & Blunders is closely linked to the change in television. With the advent of cable and satellite, TV has spawned the growth of specialty TV. Public TV, the History Channel, and Speed TV have an eclectic mix of viewing options. Shows like American Pickers, Antique Road Show, Pinks, the Military Channel, Cut, Chop, & Rebuild have received the highest marks from critics and views. They all deal with fond memories and devote time in how to build and restore antiques, collectibles and dreams. Many subjects date back to technical

innovations discovered a n d improved in the last century. F e w W W I I Veterans who fought to protect o u r freedom still are with us. The fascination of the thought of flying was an enticement for many to enlist even before the US was officially engaged. But more likely than flying high, many more soldiers were down in the trenches fascinated with the capability of tracked equipment such as

Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders is an eclectic mix of unique items, passions, events and bargains and the people who love them. Our mission is to provide more exposure on a monthly basis for antique and collectible dealers in order to connect to consumers who want to find those dealers. There’s always this unquenchable thirst to add to one’s collection and to find that ever elusive item, whether it be a piece of period furniture, a doll, a tea pot, or a vintage piece of farm equipment. We just want to connect folks so that everyone can buy and sell the things that we all love.

powerful tanks and bull dozers and what could be done with such power and traction on the family farm. Pickers, Pickers, Pedals, Passions & Blunders recently recognized the significance of the Willis Jeep. The lightweight 4 cylinder and 4 wheel drive became the dream vehicle for WWII veterans who were hunters, fishermen, and farmers. The Willis Jeep was a boom for the Kaiser/Fraser. But after the war, many new problems were apparent. As Jeep production was ramped up and returning Veterans were shocked and the Hitler World Car Volkswagen designed by Dr. Porsche, officials in Detroit could only imagine what the US would be like if all the states were connected with

Interstate highways like the quality of the Autobahn. As the Hitler World Car Volkswagen that was first introduced in 1939 gained favor in Europe, high and surplus production of the Jeep 4 cylinder engine and drive components gave birth to the first competitor for the Volkswagen, the Henry J. The Henry J was a very distinctive car and considered a car way ahead of its time. The shorter wheelbase with the high green house look of cars from the 1940’s and lower body panels with no running boards marked a trend change for the first 50 years of the 20th century to the 2nd half of the 20th century. The Rocket Aircraft influenced Grill and the first sign of a tailfin marked the trim or design feature for most every model through the 1950‘s. The Henry J hit the market 1951 as a bargain at $995.00 and was even marketed through the Sears and Roebuck Catalog as an Allstate but was a slow seller, and within a few years was no more. Through the Korean conflict and Vietnam war, mechanical skills of the veterans merged with

Light weight bodies like English Fords and Henry J’s that large V-8’s and 6 cylinders fit into and receive custom intake manifolds and carborators. Works of Wrought Iron As a child growing up in and around the Charleston, SC islands, I loved going downtown to the Battery to see a whole different world aside from the beaches. I never quite understood the giggles and peals of laughter from the elder women of my family when they would grab their purses and car keys stating that we were going to town and mix with the SOBs. But now that I’m a bit older, a bit wiser and know what SOB stands for in current society lingo, I also understand that SOB held a slightly different connotation. Down in Charleston, SOB actually meant ‘South of the Broad.’ And it was one of my favorite places to go walk and see beautiful works of art. One of the things that a visitor notices while visiting the Battery area is an abundance of wrought iron everywhere. Fine old homes are surrounded by fabulous wrought iron fences. Inner courtyard gardens featured many different wrought iron gates. And some windows were covered in beautiful iron work grills that also served a practical function. I used to walk and just stare at these masterful pieces of artwork wondering who on Earth could produce such beauty for all to see. My rambunctious younger brothers were more concerned with how to throw whatever they could put their hands on over these iron fences, much to our mother’s chagrin. I remember

one occasion when my brothers were running around chasing each other and basically giving our mother fits. That particular foray downtown was cut short when one brother ran headlong into one of the wrought iron gates guarding entrance to a beautiful courtyard. Now as an adult, I look back and wish I could’ve met the man who covered Charleston with his handiwork, Philip Simmons. This man was born and raised near Mount Pleasant, a bedroom community of Charleston and learned his craft from another blacksmith on Calhoun Street.

Philip Simmons 1912 - 2009 photo credit Claire Y. Greene

Mr. Simmons progressed into ornamental wrought iron designs and took great pride in his contribution to the uniqueness of downtown Charleston. Autumn is one of my favorite times of the year to go visit my family in the Low country and I highly recommend the various walking tours that are offered to see the sites of downtown Charleston. Visitors will be delighted at the many churches the city boasts of, the great cuisine, the architecture and how Mr. Simmons left his mark as an artist for all to see. 3

For more info on this late great artist, please visit http:/ /www.philipsimmons.us/ aboutsimmons.html. On this website there is a map showing locations of various wrought iron crafted by Mr. Simmons. He left a legacy of iron works that takes your breath away. Renee Warren is the Editor of Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders. One Man’s trash is transformed into Grandson’s Treasure As I rambled through nearly 1,850 cars at the Drag News Hall of Fame Reunion in Henderson, NC I came across a group of Rat Rod enthusiasts grouped together having the time of lives. One truck stood out due to High Technical Marks, by Pickers, Pedals, Passions & Blunders Staff. A strange combination of reusing handy materials such as

16 oz Pabst Blue Ribbon and was labeled Alcohol Injection on a mid ’50’s R o c k e t Oldsmobile. O n l y volume exhaust tests were observed by the Pickers Pedals staff, but no performance statistics were available. 7

Behind the car was a young enthusiast in his own event scaled for a 50 pound fan. I asked him whose truck it was and with a sly smile he replied, “It’s my Granddad’s. The truck’s name is Stinky.” Hunter Wallace gave me a run down and demonstrated why the truck earned its name. Rat Rods in Henderson, NC continued next pg

Rat Rods and Rat Bikes began with the advent of the Beverly Hillbillies tv show and has become a favorite at Daytona. An Indian Larry gas cap caught my eye. For those unfamiliar with Indian Larry, for ol’ school bikers Larry is recognized as the greatest freelance motorcycle stunt rider of all time. He passed away doing what he loved. The Gas Cap was a tribute to his life as a stunt rider and Rat Bike builder. For more info on this biker’s legend, visit http:// www.indianlarry.com/ indianlarry/main.php

The Indian Larry Gas Cap was only one carefully selected component on another Rat Rod. Gear shifts and shift linkage varied quite a bite, even the Hemi Pistol Grip guys were jealous when a real 6 shooter was serving double duty. Some of the local watering holes may be missing a beer tap or two. These Rat Rods were not trailer queens and the owners

were extremely proud to proclaim that they actually drive these vehicles on the street. No vinyl bras were in sight and road kills were considered hard earned trophies. Major priorities were in place for road kill roasts and the coolers were well packed for frequent trips. Little to no finishes where in sight and not creating any glare from the sun. These Rat Rodders were by far the most kicked back, laid back group of the entire gathering there at the East Coast Drag Hall of Fame Reunion. I can’t wait ‘til next year’s event. Heck, I can’t wait for the big event in Daytona! Dale

Tips on Caring for Antique Dolls If you have a collection of antique dolls that you may want to sell one day, it’s important for you to take proper care of them. If you don’t maintain their condition properly, their value will only depreciate over time instead of rising. This article will give you a few tips on how to care for your antique dolls properly. Storage Some people make the mistake of storing antique dolls in plastic boxes. This can lead to problems if moisture finds its way into the box and causes mold to grow on the doll’s clothes. The best place to store antique dolls is in a chest or cupboard. For added protection, you should wrap acid free paper around each doll. Also, you should never lay dolls down on their back for lengthy periods of time. Lay them face down to prevent their eyes from falling out. Cleaning Wooden antique dolls should never be exposed to water as this can leave a stain on them. For

other types of dolls, you should only use distilled water and a soft cloth to to clean them. If you make the mistake of using soap, the residue can cause the doll to b e c o m e discolored. Antique dolls made of cloth can be vacuumed safely by putting a layer of nylon netting on the end of the vacuum hose. Decorations Many people choose to display their antique dolls around their homes for decorations. If you do this, you should be sure to dust them whenever you dust your home. You should never put them in a place where they are exposed to excessive sunlight. Prolonged exposure to sunlight can fade the paint on the doll and also fade the colors of the clothes. Insects If you have wooden antique dolls, you should check them occasionally for insects. Insects can easily destroy wooden dolls. Once they have infected one of

the dolls, they can quickly move on to the other dolls in your collection. Temperature It is common for people to leave their antique dolls in the basement or attic. This is not the ideal place for these dolls because of the fluctuating temperatures from season to season. Antique dolls should be stored at a constant room temperature. Antique dolls should always be taken care of properly, especially when they may be sold in the future. If you take good care of them, you can be assured that your investment will pay off in the future. cited - D Swain www.associatedcontent.com

The Cures of Back Then for What Ailed a Body Looking back at how people used to deal with common illnesses many decades ago, one has to wonder how our ancestors ever survived. Some of the cures used actually sound worse than the illnesses themselves! One of our contributing writers, June Rose Barbour of Raleigh, NC, showed us some photocopied papers explaining that her ancestors clipped remedies that were shared by readers from

their local newspaper. June told me that these clippings were found in her ancestor’s family Bible. As we read over a few of these remedies, we had to cringe. We had to research a few of the maladies addressed since we were unfamiliar with them. One thing we noticed was that a few of the remedy clippings were actually for animals. Keep in mind that many decades ago, most country folks did their own vetting since veterinarians traveled the countryside and were Yes, there were ‘Snake Oil’ salemen out there peddling their from cases just like this one claiming to take care of few and far between in cure-alls the Bubonic Plague (courtesy of Oak Street Mill Antiques). sparse populated areas of our nation. ‘Sure Cure for Smallpox,’ for a One remedy clipping was titled young man who was never vacci‘Lemon for Cancer,’ where the nated. A Haunted Rocking Chair?! Bethann bought an antique rocker, hoping to rock her new baby to sleep each night. Here’s her story of the haunted rocker. I bought this wonderful old antique rocker, thinking it would be a great addition to the nursery. I had visions of rocking my first born to sleep nightly. Perhaps passing this heirloom down someday. I found the rocker at a local antique shop, one I had been frequenting for years. The owner explained “the rocker was purchased from a person that claimed he had picked it up at a flee market. The price was good, so I purchased it, and bought it home. I put it in the nursery, it looked wonderful, that night I rocked the baby to sleep, and then my husband and I watched a bit of TV, and retired to bed. About 3 AM. I was awaken, I heard an strange unfamiliar sound. A creaking noise, I got up to check it out, peeked in the baby’s room, all was well. I returned to bed. Two nights later I was again awaken, by the same creaky

sound, I got up immediately, and walked towards the nursery... I continued to hear the sound, a stood outside the nursery for a moment to make sure that the sound was actually coming from there. It continued, I new at once it was the rocker, remembering the sound that it made when I rocked the baby that night. I slowly walked into the room, the rocker was slowly rocking... As I turned on the light the rocker stopped dead... I returned to bed , and by that time my husband was awake, and wondering if there was a problem. I told him what I had just witnessed. He said :most likely it has something to do with the placement, something jarred the rocker? I thought , he must be right. We checked the rocker out the next afternoon, trying every which way to make it move. Nothing made it move even slightly? Three nights latter, my husband woke me, he was awakened by the rocking sound. He took it a bit more serious this time. We both crept to the nursery, and from the door we watched as the rocker rocked and rocked. Again as we approached the rocker it stopped abruptly. We could not believe our eyes. We took the baby’s bassinet into our room. The next morning I returned the rocker to the antique shop, I told the owner what had happened. She

gave me my money back, and put the rocker back up for sale. After the rocker was gone, all returned to normal. Bethann From Ohio Cited - www.squidoo.com/ hauntedantiques Home Remedies continued

wound by bathing it in warm water, then binding warm mush made from equal parts of salt and corn meal. By keeping this poultice applied to the affected area for a day or night and later binding the sore with pine tar, the wound would heal with no problem. Among June’s home remedy clippings, there were several addressing how to prevent horse colic. One contributor wrote that by keeping wood ashes in the trough with grain, this would prevent colic. And for folks who feed fodder, he recommended giving cattle plenty of salt and water, they will have no more cornstalk trouble. Medicine and animal husbandry sure has changed over the centuries, thankfully!
