What’s Hot? Trends We See... We travel all over the southeast visiting friends, family and browsing through different malls and stores looking at antiques and whatnot. It’s inevitable that conversation rolls around to what’s selling. And here is a short list of what we’re hearing from store owners and managers... Functional antiques - Namely furniture made in the US. Art - No surprise to us since art holds its value and so many

Someone is going to want this chair! One of our longtime colleagues gave us words of wisdom and a good dollup of encouragement when he was told that we had started this brand new electronic newsletter featuring antiques, collectibles, etc. Pickers & Pedals publisher, Dale Swiggett, stopped by to visit last week and our colleague pointed over to this huge chair in the corner of his office. “Why don’t you try and sell this old chair for me? I got it at a Guilford County auction about 50 years ago.” Dale commented that it didn’t look like any other government office chair he’d ever seen at past municipal auctions. The twinkle in our colleague’s eyes made Dale ask what was the back story on this huge manly man of a chair. “Oh, it was just the Judge’s chair at the courthouse here in Guilford County. Can you imagine all the butts that sat in this chair hearing all kinds of interesting cases? The thing was made in the late 1800’s.”

John Deere Tractors Once heard, the familiar sound of a Johnny Popper John Deere engine is much like riding a bicycle…it is never forgotten. The Johnny Popper engine was the modern equivalent of an electric generator and was used to power dozens of machines for work and pleasure. Above the single cylinder, long stroking, slow revving, double flywheel Johnny Popper is being used by Mr. Jerry Neal to drive a ice cream maker for the Guilford County Hospice Fund Raiser on Saturday Sept 25th held at the Antique Market Place Car Show in Greensboro, NC. In up coming issues Pickers, Pedals, Passions, and Blunders will be featuring collectible restored John Deere tractors and equipment from the Neal John Deere Museum in Trinity, NC.
located north of Raleigh, NC For info, call 336.340.6299 or email water.warrior8@gmail.com
Jerry Neal’s booth was a favorite destination of many attendees and exhibitors since he was making homemade ice cream. But instead of churning by hand, he brought along his old Johnny Popper John Deere engine which provided the power to do the churning for him. Jerry wanted all of our readers to know that his John Deere Museum in Trinity, NC will be open to the public during the holidays. Visit www.nealsjohndeeretractors.com for more info to plan for a fun filled family outing. All profits from the John Deere Christmas go towards Victory Junction.
“Then the boys from the honky tonk called to say there’s a party goin’ on down here. Well she might’ve took my car keys but she forgot about my old John Deere...” ...Vince Gill (lyrics from ‘One More Last Chance’) 14

You don't have to like antiques, but eventually every family is faced with tough financial decisions about inheriting or liquidating old objects. Here's how to avoid the big mistakes families make when settling estates or dealing with decisions regarding a lifetime of antiques. Blame me I often tell people, if you want an antique or collectible, ask for it. Ask your grandma if you can have or purchase her antique mantle clock — the one that signaled "pancake time" when you visited her home as a child. I know that this advice sounds extremely bold, but if you don't ask for it, that object will be lost from you or possibly from your family forever. Tell Grandma that Dr. Lori "advised me to talk to you about how much I cherish your antique mantle clock as a symbol of our times together." From my experience helping people evaluate antiques and make good decisions about them based on value and other factors, I know Grandma probably has no idea you even noticed that old clock — and she'd love you to have it. Don't forget that many seniors who are living on a fixed income may need extra money. Some families are surprised to learn
that aging relatives would be willing to part with some of their antiques for cash. Many seniors are too proud or embarrassed to make their financial struggles known to their children, friends, and relatives. Why not make your grandma a serious purchase offer in order to help her financially and to obtain the antique that is part of your history? You can always insist on paying for it. You know
that the money is going to someone who needs it, your grandmother is happy to see you have that cherished antique, and you end up with a valuable piece that means something to you. It's a win/win. Trash the embarrassment I have met many people who said their elderly relatives have sold antiques without the family even knowing it. To keep their financial struggles under wraps, some seniors make awful deals selling antiques to third parties instead of asking if their family has any interest in buying some heirlooms. Would you be shocked if your grandma just up and sold her Art Deco grand piano or Tiffany lamp 15
without a word to anyone? Don't be. This happens every day. Afterwards, families are devastated that Grandma only got a fraction of the antique's value. Grandma will often sell her antiques to local antiques dealers, resellers, or people working around the house like a handyman, cleaning woman, and landscaper. If this happens to your family, don't be embarrassed to politely call the buyer and ask to buy back Grandma's antique. If she can make the call herself, have Grandma make the call and ask outright. Explain that Grandma did not want to sell that family heirloom after all. Explain that you would appreciate the return of it and that you will refund the money and cover any costs. Most buyers will oblige since no local business person wants it to be known that they may have made an unwanted deal with a senior citizen over an antique family heirloom. Keep lines of communication open to keep valuable antiques in the family. Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders Lesson for the Week... Talk to your elders about what they would like to see happen w/ their antiques & collectibles.
Letter from the Editor... We at Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders feel very strongly about educating people. I’m a teacher (not related to antiques) and take every opportunity to open a door so that someone, no matter what their age, can walk through that door of learned knowledge. I have very few regrets but one that haunts me to this day is the sad fact that I did not pay more attention to the elders in my family when it came to antiques, collectibles, and family heirlooms. Indeed, I was really no different than so many other young people who are so disinterested in ‘old, moldy things.’ As a child, I grew up in Charleston, SC where my mother’s parents lived. I have fond memories of visiting my grandparent’s home filled with all kinds of marble top tables, silver tea service, pie safes, fine blown glass collectibles, dolls, etc. My mother did not really share her mother’s love of antiques and by extension, I showed little interest in such fine things. the proverbial Tom Boy, more interested in wrestling with my younger brothers and catching crayfish in the tidewater creeks of the Lowcountry. My mother was born and raised a Southern genteel lady so her mission as a mother was to enroll me in ballet and shower me with Barbie dolls. I disappointed her by showing my ineptness at being graceful on the ballet floor and rebelling against playing with dolls by breaking off their heads. I remember my grandmother being a fine interior decorator and her love for putting her hand to making wonderful crafts. Her house was filled with nut dolls she made by hand, tastefully done floral arrangements, and decoupaged items. She got the biggest laugh from the time I took her rubber stamp marked ‘Man Made’ and stamping every single piece of fresh fruit in her kitchen and dining room. One of her friends dropped by to visit and return a casserole dish but was very puzzled when she picked up a Granny Smith apple and saw it stamped as ‘Man
Made.’ My granny became flustered until she saw me giggling behind one of her wing back chairs, realizing I was the prankster stamping all her fresh fruit. Many years later, my granny got the last laugh at my expense. One Christmas I decided to turn some old cigar boxes into fine examples of decoupage for each member of my family. After my husband told her I about passed out due to the bad fumes from the adhesive glue I used, my granny laughed as she commented ‘well, you should’ve paid more attention to what I was trying to teach you.’ Of course, she was right, as all grandmothers are right and are fountains of wisdom. She grew up around antiques and collectibles while living in both NC & SC but just wishes she had paid more attention to her grandmothers about their love of antiques and collectibles. Her favorite category is anything Asian or Oriental.
