Combining Two Talents to Serve Discerning Customers What do you get when two extremely gifted people get together and combine their talents to offer a better solution for interior decorating? Simple answer, you get Julie Morgan and LuJean Blaylock.

LuJean is one of the go-to gals when it comes to staging at the High Point International Furniture Market shows. And Julie Morgan has one of the largest, most versatile collection of antiques in the Triad area. LuJean often sought out Julie for particular items to finish off a booth or another client’s room ensemble. It was inevitable that these two ladies would collaborate together for achieving great 2

results. In the back portion of Antique Market Place, there is a whole other area set aside for furniture, bedding, and room accessories that customers can pick a single must-have item or purchase a whole range of items to recreate a particular look for any room in the house. Customers appreciate the two distinct arenas. In the back they can choose furniture for everyday living and then walk through the antique mall choosing just the right items to put the finishing touch.

We absolutely love the greeting sign at the coffee station at the very front of the store!

Pedals Find Oh, What I’d Give to Own a Willy! As new technology moves faster than ever, we take for granted many benchmarks. Historians look for works and results where solutions overcame needs and demands. Over history many significant solutions over needs and demands were inventions created in times of war. Throughout history weapons are evident in every century. Mobility and the ability to move weapons and soldiers at greater speeds will always be a challenge.

Prior to World War II, off road transportation and weapon movement was dominated by track drive vehicles. Rear wheel drive only vehicles were unreliable off road. Military leaders and strategist saw a need for a light weight ‘go anywhere’ vehicle. The all round vehicle was designed with help from the agriculture industry to develop a system to transfer power. The challenge was for both front and r e a r axles to drive all 4 wheels a n d allow t h e front wheels to steer without obstructing load to each wheel. The name Jeep was born, with contracts going to the Willys/ Kaiser company. While Willys/

Kaiser ramped up production on the Jeep, t h e overwhelming demand for the design was also contracted out to Ford. Willys/Kaiser saw the benefit of small and numbers but failed to transfer the success to the Henry J, a 2-wheel drive car based on the same running gear. We now move forward 70 years and find at least one 4 X 4 pickup trucks and SUV’s in most every driveway and now comprise a large portion of fleets throughout the world. The Jeep surely has its place in history but we can thank the now defunct Willy Jeep continued next pg

Fond Memories & Not So Fond Memories

Right after the end of WWII, I found myself stationed in Europe as part of the ‘peace keeping’ forces left behind to assist the continent’s war torn countries get back up on their feet. Of course the Army still used the Willy Jeep as its workhorse since these vehicles could go just about

anywhere and everywhere. I recall one particular day where snow, sleet and freezing rain made for a work day that can only be described by an infantryman in certain terms that are not fit to be printed in this particular publication. But readers should get the idea of the language us soldiers used at the time. I was driving a Willy up this particularly steep and rutted out mountain road on the side of an unforgiving mountain. The man in front of me managed to get his large truck stuck and the whole convoy was halted in its tracks. 4

As several men assembled to attempt freeing the truck from an icy rut, I heard someone behind me holler loudly, then heard a crash of metal. Quickly I whipped around in time to see my Willy Jeep slide down the mountain side into the forest, end over end, crashing and rolling like a giant green pinball as it struck tree after tree. It wasn’t funny to me at the time since my pay was docked considerably for this mishap but now I can laugh about it with my old Army buddies over a beer. Master Sgt. John Smith (name has been changed to protect this gentleman’s blunder)

Willy Jeep continued

Willys/Kaiser for its success perfecting the transfer case. With production up and the soldiers returning, the problem was to maintain production by expanding uses of the Jeep. Uncle Sam had been paying Willys/Kaiser a more than fair price for the Jeep. Willys/Kaiser saw a return to the agriculture roots as a multi-use vehicle to appeal to a broader base to justify its price and lack of on-road matters. Jeep released the Agar Jeep with a factory optioned power takeoff and hydraulic 3-point hitch. The option was designed to be versatile to do many chores but did not catch on. Jeep collector and

expert Joel Fogelman of J o e l ’ s Portable Welding in Gibsonville, N C (336.345.0186) has one of the best example of the Agra Jeep with the Monroe Company Aga Jeep option. Jeep has stood the test of time and only recently a 4 door version was released. Its open air roots and ‘go anywhere’ capability has a special following of millions of military personnel and the memories it represents. Top 10 Tips for Good Antiquing 1. Get to know pricing and look through general antiquing guides. 2. Start out slowly. 3. Shop around, frequent as many shops as possible. 4. Ask questions, inspect the goods. 5. Become an expert in the field you are interested in. Buy, collect, find great buys, and don’t worry about spending “too much” now and then for something that is a great addition to your collection. 6. You have to feel good about the purchase. 7. Find a good auction to attend and arrive early. 8. Don’t ride a bike to go antiquing. Bring along boxes, blankets, rope, whatever you may need to pack up and safely take home that special purchase. 9. Enjoy your antiques. It is fun to collect as there are many good memories of where you picked each piece. 10. When it comes to antiques, the thrill of the hunt is the best thrill of all! - as per antique expert Chuck Haarer, Antique Manager for the Shipshewana Trading Place in Indiana.

You Paid HOW Much for that Lil’ Box of Wood?! OK, this is like a confession column from one of our avid readers who is a rabid turkey hunter. His name has been changed to protect him from his wife, who’s just recently gotten over his last purchase that showed up on their credit card statement. But heaven help the poor man if she finds out his latest acquisition he just landed off of eBay! We’ll just call our reader Bob. My good friend is a born and bred native Tar Heel, raised on hunting and fishing in his own back yard of the Piedmont area. Bob says that you just go deer hunting to kill time while waiting for spring turkey season. He swears there’s something mysterious that comes over an outdoorsman on his/her first brisk spring morning listening to turkeys cut and gobble. I believe him wholeheartedly. It’s an eclectic mix of art and science to hunt the North Carolina wild turkey. These animals are not just your normal run-of-the-mill stupid birds. A lot of folks would have you think otherwise, but hey, they’re the same sort of folks that seem to keep increasing the distance between their hands while describing the ‘big fish’ that got away.

No, there is definitely a fine art in calling a gobbler to you. And there are so many different kind of turkey calls - box calls, diaphragm (or bladder) calls, slate calls, gun-mounted calls, etc. Every serious hunter has just a few different calls they carry into the woods with them. But every serious hunter also has an obsession.

Here’s a current eBay listing for one of those high-priced box calls. If you follow turkey call auctions, you can’t help but notice two things, 1) there’s a lot of competitiveness amongst this group of eclectic hunters and 2) it’s more about ensuring the acquisition than paying a fair price.

They have an addiction that rivals gambling and drinking. They have to have ‘that’ turkey call they just saw on the internet. You know the type of guy. If it’s an auction listing, damn the torpedoes when it comes to winning the object of their desire. It does not matter that the current bid is really twice more than what the thing is actually worth. Well, our reader Bob, has confessed that he just put himself in jeopardy with his old lady again. This past weekend Bob 19

bagged him a nice gobbler down in eastern NC on a buddie’s farm. After drinks and barbecue dinner with the boys, everyone got to talking about their newest hunting toys. And of course, talk turned to everyone’s most recent turkey call purchases. Bob hadn’t bought anything to add to his burgeoning collection of hunting gear in the past several weeks and made a mental note to devote an hour or so that evening to check out if there were any interesting turkey calls listed on the many internet forums. After all, he deserved to treat himself! He had just bagged a beautiful gobbler for the taxidermist to work on later. So that Sunday evening, Bob started surfin’ the ‘net. And lown-behold, there was a beauty of a call up on eBay! He immediately flagged it for monitoring and mulled over his next course of action. Needless to say, when a person is addicted to collecting turkey calls, the heat of the moment at the end of an auction can cost dearly....in more ways than one. To make a long story short, Bob ended up as the winning bidder on a very primitive, antique turkey call. Not functional in the field but just a really cool thing to add as a centerpiece to his massive collection. Only problem was that he had to bid close to $1,200 to win the object of his desire. And then in Bob’s euphoric haste in banging in his last final bid to snap it up, he forgot to change his mailing address to his business address. Quickly he fired off another couple of separate emails to the seller requesting that his purchase be redirected to his office address,

in order to keep his extravagant purchase secret from his wife. At last communication with Bob, he nervously called to say he might need to crash on someone’s couch soon. He got an email from the seller stating they did not receive his emails asking to change the ship-to address in time but were confirming his new turkey box call was being shipped

Letter from the Publisher... As a textile broker I spent much of my time knocking on the doors of retailers and working with domestic textile manufactures developing marketing programs. In 1990, I heard Ross Perot speak at the UNC Chapel Hill MBA School. He warned that if the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) passed, over 200 domestic textile manufactures would close. It passed and they closed along with thousands of retailers. Many retailers left entire communities with empty mills and traditional retailers out of business. Historic designations have helped renew many of these sites throughout the US and Canada. In the charming historic locations, new opportunities have emerged. As the new change for retailers are competing for shoppers time as well as their money. Special efforts are being made by like minded shoppers to find special events that support such areas. Well informed shoppers are seeking the lasting value of American Made products that lead the world in quality standards and craftsmanship. Unique collectibles that are being offered in antique malls and

stores are highly desirable by many. Over the last decade, many investors are disillusioned with all of the crash-n-burn scams and are now seeking refuge and diversity for savings and investments. Many are internet related. Retailers and collectors are not immune from the confusion. Websites can be pricey when incorporating all the fancy bells-n-whistles and also must compete with millions of other websites out there for cyber readers. Not too mention the ever-growing profession of ‘scammers’ where buyers and sellers must wade through every communication and transaction as if it could be totally bogus person on the other end. Pickers, Pedals, Passions, & Blunders was created as an affordable alternative to bridge the gap between those who have not enjoyed the full benefits of the internet and those who have become more dependent on the internet. Pickers, Pedals, Passions, & Blunders name was designed to attract a broad base of interest and link regional travel together with related events and businesses. Pickers, Pedals, Passions, & Blunders is FREE and broadcast 20

Maybe he got lucky a n d intercepted the package at home before his wife got the mail. over the internet throughout the world to antique malls, stores, buyers and collectors.
