Passions Large & Small, Fast & Slow... ...will be well represented at the upcoming Hospice Fund Raiser inside and outside of the Antique Market Place in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, Sept. 25, 2010. Julie Morgan and the whole staff of Antique Market Place have worked for over a year to host the first fund raiser of its type to merge a broad range of passionate restorers and collectors to join together to raise money for Hospice.
Look for Joel Fogelman’s Famous James motorcycle & Jeep at the Hospice Car Show being held at Antique Market Place just off of I-40.
Jerry Pardue’s nationally recognized 1948 Chevrolet truck that inspired the SSR Sport truck will be present. Many classic vehicles along with over 100 other cars, trucks, and motorcycles will join together to r a i s e money for the Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro. Renown
Jeep collector Joel Fogelman will have his Agra Jeep and his rare Famous James 1948 Motorcycle. Not to be out done, Harvey Shaw, a nationally renowned collector will have over 100 pedal and toy cars available for viewing and sale inside Antique Market Place rain or shine Sept. 25 2010. Dozens of automotive signage and collectible items will also be available for viewing and sale Rain date for the car show will be Saturday, October 2nd.

Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders is an eclectic mix of unique items, passions, events and bargains and the people who love them. Our mission is to provide more exposure on a monthly basis for antique and collectible dealers in order to connect to consumers who want to find those dealers. Curious as to what beauties these are surrounding Harvey? On tabletop - Left is BMC Special c.’50’s for $1,500, Middle is made by American National Company and a Don Khuffman Collector’s piece c.’20’s and is $4,500 while the model on Right is a ‘39 Dodge made by Steel Craft for $4,250. The models on the floor - Left is a ‘41 Chrysler that is unfinished for $2,000, the 2nd on the left is a Supercharger by Steel Craft c.’30’s and is $5,500, the 3rd from the left if a Ford Mustang Jr. c.’66 for $400, and the last model on the Right is an unfinished Oldsmobile by Steel Craft c.1939 for $3,500. There are rows and rows and more rows of Harvey Shaw’s pedal cars and toy collectibles. You can see many makes, models and different time eras (a lesson in automobile manufacturing in of itself). There are unfinished models and range everything up to completely restored models. Prices vary. This is one of the most extensive collections in the southeastern US and a collector’s dream come true if looking for a rare example of pedal cars. Paying It Forward Too many times have I seen where someone has not a clue the true worth or history behind something they have inherited from a family member and just take to Goodwill or put it in a box destined for a yard sale to get rid of other accumulated junk. That’s how a lot of us Pickers end up with some sweet deals. The saying is apt ‘one man’s junk is another’s treasure.’ And that’s why yard and garage sales can be so much fun! I was going to work one Saturday morning, but was early so I pulled over to just take a few minutes at a yard sale. As I walked from table to table, my eyes took in trinkets, clothing, books, children’s toys, and kitchen wares. I spotted an odd piece of pottery and wandered over to have a closer look. As I walked the several feet, I overheard two ladies conversation. A neighbor was telling the yard sale host that hopefully she’d make some money with her yard sale. The other woman replied that she just needed to make enough cash from selling her unwanted items to keep her power on. As thoughts of sympathy washed over me at her plight, I picked up the small pottery item thinking it was an odd piece. Flipping it over, I immediately recognized the famous McCoy logo
on the bottom of the piece. And then I thought how sad....this woman who so desperately needed to sell her stuff just to make enough cash to keep her power from being turned off had no idea that she owned a fine and very unusual piece of McCoy pottery that could easily f e t c h enough if not more money to pay her bill. I held onto to the small vase and looked at other items on her table for sale. As her neighbor said her good-byes and walked off, I made my way over to the home owner. Instead of digging out $2 from my pocket to pay for the odd vase, I gently told her I couldn’t help overhearing her conversation with her friend. Turning over the vase, I pointed out the maker’s mark insignia and told the woman exactly what she had. I then told her that she could snap a picture of it, write up a small eBay auction and list it to sell or auction off. I estimated she should get at least $100 or even much more, surely enough to pay her power bill. She gave me the biggest hug and hollered right then for her son to come out and make himself useful. She gave him simple instructions and went to work 1 8
writing down a description of the vase. I told her to put a decent reserve on it, about $100 but mentioned that it wouldn’t surprise me that it went for closer to $200 by close of auction. I got back in my car and went to work. Yes, I could have had a delightful tidy profit from just grabbing a McCoy vase that had a $2 price sticker on it. But instead I decided to ‘pay it forward’ by educating someone about a collectible vase that was not just some piece of junk collecting dust. Hopefully she had a good auction on eBay and was able to keep her power and lights on. I know I passed up a tidy profit on a great ‘pick.’ But instead I felt good by teaching that lady a little bit about something she had not a clue about McCoy pottery. There are so many younger generations who were simply not exposed to antiques or collectibles. To them, whatever is obsolete should go to the landfill or Goodwill. And that’s just downright sad. So, one of the things that we at Pickers Pedals Passions & Blunders would like to see is our readers helping educate the younger generations about items of great value. Letter from the Publisher... As a textile broker I spent much of my time knocking on the doors of retailers and working with domestic textile manufactures developing marketing programs. Over the last decade, many investors are disillusioned with all of the crash-n-burn scams and are now seeking refuge and diversity for savings and investments. Many are internet related. Retailers and collectors are not immune from the confusion. Websites can be pricey when incorporating all the fancy bells-n-whistles and also must compete with millions of other websites out there for cyber readers. Not too mention the ever-growing profession of ‘scammers’ where buyers and sellers must wade through every communication and transaction as if it could be totally bogus person on the other end.
