F r o m t h e D i r e c t o r : T a m my B a g g e t t Regardless of where I go or who I meet, Durham County Library is always a topic of conversation. Usually the conversation begins with, “I just love my library.” From there specifics are shared: “Thank you for having ebooks.” “It was so easy to follow directions on how to download to my Kindle.” “I attended one of your programs recently and really had a great time” or “I just brought my child to storytime and was amazed at the creativity, patience and energy of staff.” It’s always a pleasure to engage in conversation about library visits being an experience that affects our patrons’ lives in a positive way. There’s also the opposite side of the coin, though, and that’s what I’d like to focus on: Sometimes Durham County Library is the best kept secret in town. More often than I would like to admit I meet members of the community who are unaware of the many services we offer. Often these users are avid readers, loyal supporters and overall champions of the library, but they are simply unaware of all that is available to a library card holder. Many are unaware that even if they lack the time to visit a library in person, they can visit our virtual branch, durhamcountylibrary.org. You read correctly, our online presence is considered a branch and offers many of the same services as our brick and mortar structures. You may think the only thing missing is a friendly librarian greeting you with a smile, but you can even find that on our Teen Zone page or our Children’s storytime pages. I place great value on all users of Durham County Library whether they enter our library through our sliding glass doors or our virtual doors. That’s why I want to take this time to inform some and remind others of a few of our best kept secrets at Durham County Library.

First some of our online treasures: • Resources and databases including Morningstar and Transparent Language (foreign language instruction) • Video story time for young children • Top Ten Titles listing (most popular checkouts of the week), reading recommendations and more • Durham historical photograph collections and online exhibits Treasures when you enter our doors: • Computer classes on Internet use and email, as well as Microsoft Office • Joblink computers designated for job searches and resume help only • A popular collection of CDs and DVDs to browse and checkout • A North Carolina Room that features books, manuscripts, maps and more that capture Durham’s history • Engaging programs for all ages • Meeting spaces that make the library a welcoming community center There are even unexpected treasures in our parking lots: • Reserved parking and charging stations for hybrid and electric vehicles at North Regional, South Regional and the Main Library When it comes to Durham County Library, make sure to tell your family, friends and coworkers about the many services we offer. We are one secret that definitely should be shared!

Frequently Asked Questions About the Family Summer Reading Club

Who can participate?

The Family Summer Reading Club is for everyone in your family. Sign up yourself and all the children and teens in your family.

How do I register?

• Fill out the form on page 31 and mail it in or take it to your library, or; • Register online at: durhamcountylibrary.org, or; • Visit any library location to register in person.

How does the Club work? For ages 0-11

• Read for at least 15 minutes each day and keep a reading record either on paper or online at durhamcountylibrary.org. • Adults are encouraged to read to infants and younger children and keep a reading record. • Share your reading record with your librarian anytime to receive prizes for 10 days, 20 days, 30 days and 40 days of reading. • Show your reading record to your librarian anytime to enter your name for monthly drawings. • To be eligible for the grand prize drawing, you must complete the 40-day level.

For ages 12 –17 Bring your reading log in for every 5 hours you read. Show it to your librarian, get it stamped and receive a benchmark prize. To enter the grand prize drawing, read for at least 20 hours and write a short BookTweet review.

For ages 18 and over Bring in your reading record for every book you read. Show it to your librarian, get it initialed and enter into the monthly drawing. After you have four books initialed, turn your record in to your librarian to enter the grand prize drawing.

What are the Club rules?

• Each participant must read books on his/her own reading or grade level or be read to, if too young. • Prizes and RIF (Reading is Fundamental) books are limited and will be distributed on a first-come/firstserved basis. • Please complete the program at the library location selected on your registration form.

What are the prizes?

Prizes will be available for each age group and include: special passes/coupons for family outings, local restaurants and businesses; t-shirts and gift certificates. Grand prize drawings will take place on Monday, August 13 at the Main Library. This year’s grand prizes include personal computers, laptops, Nook books and DVD players for adults. All grand prize winners will be drawn from the combined eligible entries made at all Durham County Library locations.

Awarding-winning Illustrator Encourages Students to Dream Big

Awarding-winning illustrator and author, Colin Bootman, recently took a break from the hustle and bustle of New York City to visit Durham where he participated in Stampede To Read’s Big Book Block Party and visited local schools. During his school visits Bootman encouraged students to embrace their dreams and passion like he did. “Once you’ve discovered your interest or passion,

nurture, embrace and explore it,” he told hundreds of students who focused intently on his every word. When asked where could they go to explore their passion, students excitedly shouted various answers including museums, experts and libraries. On that note students were encouraged to ‘dream big’ this summer during the library’s summer reading club and read about their many interests.

STORY SHARING KITS (Elementary School) Ongoing Calling all daycare providers: Have we got a resource for you! What is a Story Sharing Kit? It is a storytime in a bag! Each kit is theme based and supports the daycare curriculum (over 75 themes). The kits provide information in a variety of media: books, videos, CDs, puzzles, puppets, flannel board stories, activity guides and more. The kits can only be checked out and returned at the Main Library’s Children’s Unit, as they must be verified for completion prior to check out and upon return. THE DOC BRANCH BAND Sunday, Jun. 10, 3 p.m. North Regional Library, 221 Milton Road The Doc Branch Band performs a concert of old time fiddle tunes, original compositions, bluegrass standards and more, prefaced by a conversation with the audience led by Doc Branch historian and aficionado Peter Kramer. The roots of this band are deep in northern Durham County. Their ancestors settled the area over two centuries ago, and the family has been playing music for themselves and for community gatherings and dances for as long as anyone can remember. Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. Piedmont Laureate, dramatist Ian Finley, will discuss the origins of his history writing and his process for turning a historical site or event into a play. The author of several history plays, Finley believes in the role theatre can play in preserving and restoring our own history. The program will include readings from Finley’s history plays. Finley is the Director of Education at Burning Coal Theatre Company.

Roxboro St. Meet mystery author Katy Munger for a talk about her three mystery series. Her first, written as Gay Gallagher, featured a eighty-something detective. The second, written under her own name, featured an unlicensed PI who worked in Durham. Her newest series, written under the name Chaz MCGee, features a dead detective. Library Journal called it “a bit quirky but spot-on as a police procedural.” A book signing will follow the reading.

She will read from her new book, How to Be a Proper Lady. A book signing will follow the discussion. Ms. Ashe is winner of the 2011 Reviewers’ Choice Award, and Library Journal praises her “lushly intense romance” for its “radiant prose.” She is also a professor of European history at Duke University.

MEET THE AUTHOR: DR. KATHERINE MELLEN CHARRON Sunday, Aug. 5, 3 p.m. Main Library, 300 N. Roxboro St. Join Dr. Katherine Charron, associate professor of history at North Carolina State University, for a discussion of her book Freedom’s Teacher: The Life of Septima Clark. In the mid-1950s, Clark developed a citizenship training program that enabled thousands of African Americans to register to vote. Dr. Charron demonstrates Clark’s crucial role—and the role of many black women teachers –in making education a cornerstone of the twentieth-century freedom struggle. Using Clark’s life as a lens, Charron sheds valuable new light on southern black women’s activism in national, state, and judicial politics. A book signing will follow the discussion.

Pictures and Progress explores how prominent nineteenth-century African American intellectuals and activists understood photography’s power to shape perceptions about race and employed the new medium in their quest for social and political justice, both to counter racist imagery that circulated widely in this era and as an empowering means of self-representation Featuring over 70 images, this book brings to light the wide-ranging practices of early African American photography and studies the effects photography had on radicalized thinking.

Roxboro St. Join Dr. James Lewis, staff historian at the Forest History Society, for a discussion of his book The Greatest Good and showing of excerpts from the film of the same name. The Greatest Good tells the story of the U.S. Forest Service and National Forests. The film weaves historic footage and still photographs with interviews with historians, timber industry and environmental leaders, and Forest Service employees to illuminate the past one hundred years of accomplishments and controversies experienced while managing 191 million acres of America’s land. Throughout the film, the question is asked: what is the greatest good? The film is narrated by Charles Osgood. A book and DVD signing will follow the discussion.
