F r o m t h e D i r e c t o r : T a m my B a g g e t t A library is more than just a place to get books, CDs, movies, and access to technology and information. It is more than a place to learn new skills, attend free programs, hear local authors and community leaders, and make new friends. In addition to all of these things, a library is the heart of its community. All of our libraries offer the same basic services, but each one takes on the unique flavor of the neighborhood and community it serves. The Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center is a great example of a neighborhood making a library its own. From the beginning, when the community came together to raise funds to open a local library, to today, with children and adult programs at the library almost every day, Bragtown is a vibrant, vital part of its patrons’ lives. On March 11, 2012, Bragtown will turn 50 years old. In celebration, the library will host programs for children, teens and adults on Friday, March 9, from 12 noon to 5 p.m. Everyone is invited to stop by during this special day to wish this small, but mighty, library a happy 50th birthday. Here are some things you may not know about Bragtown, one of Durham County’s oldest libraries, and one with a rich history.

• Bragtown goes beyond teaching children how to read and to develop a lifelong love of learning – to widening their understanding of the natural world. Master Gardener, Melissa Young, works with the children in the Bragtown Garden of Wonders, instilling in them the drive to be good stewards of the land and its resources by giving them hands-on experience growing food, flowers and plants in a sustainable manner. • Bragtown Library is the place in the neighborhood for children, teens and adults to access technology that many may not have at home. Homework help is available for children and teens each day, and the library provides computer time for activities like research, completing assignments and job searches. Computer use is sometimes as high as 300 one-hour sessions per month. • Bragtown maintains strong community partnerships with businesses, schools, churches, childcare centers and public housing facilities. Last year, a partnership with Oxford Manor Public Housing and GlaxoSmithKline allowed the library to host “Science in the Summer Camp.” For the first time, this one-room library was able to provide children with access to a popular system-wide program that makes learning about science fun.

• Bragtown was founded as a branch of the African-American Stanford L. Warren Library to serve Northeast Durham. The dream of locating a library in the community became a reality because of the hard work of Bragtown community leaders and the Stanford L. Warren Library Board. As the plans came together for the new facility, the library was temporarily housed in a store while the steering committee raised funds by hosting fish fries and bake sales. On July 21, 1961, the land at Ruth Street and Dearborn Drive was deeded to the Durham Colored Library. Bragtown Branch Library opened, and was dedicated, on March 11, 1962. In April of 1966, the Durham Colored Library merged with the Durham City-County Public Library, and Bragtown became part of the new Durham County Library system. Preservation Durham has recently identified Bragtown Library as a site of historic significance in Durham’s African-American history.

• For almost 50 years now, since Bragtown opened its doors, it has been a place for local adults and seniors to meet new people and socialize with their neighbors. Seniors walk to the library for programs that keep them active and engaged. And each month the librarian hosts “Neighbor-to-Neighbor,” a program that brings residents together for fun activities, educational discussions and good conversation.

• Bragtown’s primary focus has always been on bringing literacy skills to young readers and their families. The library officially opens at 2 p.m. each weekday, but many mornings the staff welcomes children from local daycare centers for storytimes and crafts. Bragtown Library hosts storytimes in English, Spanish and French for children and toddlers, tutoring for school-aged children and access to technology for all ages.

• And finally, some quick statistics: last year Bragtown Library had more than 6,800 visits. It hosted 128 programs, which were attended by approximately 2,000 children, teens and adults. The library also provided access to technology as visitors logged 1,190 computer sessions. All of this in a 1,000 sq. ft. facility, officially open only 15-20 hours a week. Happy 50th birthday to a wonderful community library: Bragtown Library Family Literacy Center! Check out the video about Bragtown on the library’s website, durhamcountylibrary.org, and join us for the celebration on March 9th at 3200 Dearborn Drive.
