Launched during Gulf Sports Expo 2017, ‘King of Youth and Sports’ documents the achievements of the Kingdom of Bahrain in the youth and sports fields, which were made possible in the reign of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. Part of a series created by Miracle Publishing, the book lists milestones in Bahrain’s sports history and depicts the athletic and multi-talented sports profile of HM the King, who was and continues to be known as the leader of the sports movement in Bahrain.
Future Goals K ing of Youth and Sports also explores His Majesty’s directives to his sons, who have followed in his footsteps and helped the Kingdom gain its current notable position in the world of sports. The efforts of His Majesty served to reinforce that position in several sports championships and international competitions, elevating the youth and sports sector to a new level and fueling the passion of the Kingdom’s sportsmen and women. The book launch at the expo was accompanied by a photography exhibition, which detailed the history and evolution of sports in the Kingdom. The photographs on display depicted His Majesty’s patronage of various sports events and activities throughout the years.

HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme 02 Council for Youth and Sports, and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee said: “When we talk about Bahrain’s youth and sports achievements, we are proud to recall the endless support of His Majesty the King, which formed the cornerstone that helped our athletes achieve the prestigious positions in sports they hold today, both locally and internationally. The accomplishments that our Kingdom has achieved will always remain a source of pride and honour for all of us, and will be the biggest source of motivation to preserve those achievements and keep our Kingdom’s name in its prominent position.”

HE Hisham Al-Jowder the Minister of Youth and Sports Affairs, added: “The youth and sports movement we are currently experiencing in the Kingdom is the direct result of the strong support that His Majesty the King has been providing to both sectors, and his continuous efforts in creating the optimum environment for local clubs and athletes to pave their way towards distinguished achievements. When we look at the record of sports in the Kingdom, we can find that it is both diverse and comprehensive, covering most types of sports. This is a reassuring sign that the Kingdom is bound to have a bright future with further accomplishments in store for the youth and sports sectors.” The Founder of Miracle, Khalid Juman, presented a copy of the book to HH Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Representative of His Majesty the King for Charity Works and Youth Affairs, Chairman of the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, and President of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, during a tour of the exhibition, which was the Kingdom’s first major sports expo and was organized by HANO

Consulting. A copy was also presented to Hisham bin Mohammed Al-Jowder, Minister of Youth & Sport Affairs at the same event, which featured an exhibition of photographs extracted from the book. “It was a great honour for me to be involved in such an important project,” said Mr. Juman. “Historically, our Kingdom has always made it a principle to be among the first in the region to explore new fields. We are known to be regional pioneers in education and commerce. Sports is no different. This book will convey the trajectory of sports development in the Kingdom by taking people through its evolution step-by-step. We are happy to see our hard work and research finally ready to be shared with the public.” He added: “Bahrain deserves to have its sports history preserved and shared so our youth can find motivation in continuing the legacy that has been built by the ones who came before them. This is a collective field, meaning each and every contribution pools into our Kingdom’s identity, so to keep it alive and fuel it with further achievements is of paramount importance.”

Our Kingdom is experiencing a new movement in the youth and sports sectors. A movement building on the momentum of past achievements, and set to define the Kingdom’s cultural identity. We learn more about the Kingdom’s accomplishments and vision for the field of sports from one of its commanding figures in our exclusive interview with HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa, First Deputy President of the Supreme Council for Youth & Sports of the Kingdom of Bahrain, President of the West Asian Athletics Association, and President of the Bahrain Athletics Association.
Winning Generations 02
Interview with HH Shaikh Khalid bin Hamad Al Khalifa You have always been passionate about sports. What about sports in particular that has been fueling that passion? What do you enjoy about it the most? The truth is, I love all sports. There’s something magical about the concept of sport. Exceeding your own limits, the discipline of competing under a particular set of rules, and the passion that these activities arouse in people from all over the world, regardless of any cultural, social, or political barrier that might exist. Of course, the combat sports, in particular, have a special place among all sports for me. As a practitioner myself, I know how much effort is required to become a Mixed Martial Artist and, especially, how talented these athletes must be in order to thrive in such a competitive environment. Honestly, there’s no other sport in the world that requires such a comprehensive set of physical, mental, and technical skills, and that’s what made me fall in love for the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. Being aware
000-000 Up Close - Sh. Khalid D37.indd 21
of that, I was shocked that the MMA athletes were not valued like other sportsmen, nor were able to have the lifestyle of the stars, because I know they deserve it. Thus, I felt the urge to do something, get involved, and bring a new perspective to the fighters. Since I was taught to lead by example, I started training, competed in the sport, and embraced the day by day of an MMA athlete. Apart from that, with KHK MMA and Brave Combat Federation, we developed an international platform to give values to the fighters and change the face of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts, which we’ve been successfully doing for the last couple of years.
How would you describe the results of the recent sports initiatives and projects that you have helped implement in the Kingdom over the past few years? Would you say they have had their intended effect, or is more work needed?

We have achieved a lot with the expansion of this vision over the last few years. But, of course, we never get comfortable and always consider there’s more to be done. As I mentioned, there are some key features of this project, which makes it different than anything else ever done in the sport. The most prominent is the focus on the athlete, offering them all the needed resources to develop themselves personally and professionally. We have a wellthought out plan, with many phases, and constantly expanding. If you remember, KHK MMA tested its system successfully with many well-known athletes, such as former world champion Frankie Edgar and Lightweight #1 contender Khabib Nurmagomedov. We have also achieved unprecedented results with the Bahraini National Team, a group of talented young athletes who have been raising the Kingdom’s flag and carrying it worldwide with glory and pride. Brave Combat Federation was our response to the issues identified in the market of MMA promotions, which caused a huge impact in the community and helped to set a new quality standard, especially when it comes to athlete relations and international exposure to the fighters.
The youth are an essential part of your plans. How do we motivate the youth to take part in sports at their young age? That’s true. The youth is, undoubtedly, the most
important part of our plans and the sport is a livechanging tool. Nothing motivates and inspire the youth more, and nothing helps to shape character, moral, and ethic responsibility more than the sports environment. We’ve witnessed some drastic changes in these young athletes’ lives, within and outside the competition scope. That’s a national project, that is the Kingdom of Bahrain we want to see in the future, and our greatest legacy for the upcoming generations.
Brave is a project that’s unique from other sports projects and is the first of its kind in the Kingdom. What kind of challenges does such a project present? Of course, a project of this magnitude presents equally great challenges. For the first time ever, a Bahraini initiative is going outside of the country’s borders and reaching the entire world. Here in the Middle East, we are used to face globalization as embracing foreign international projects, which is a valid point of view. But with Brave CF our goal was to offer an alternative and unprecedented perspective, in which this global initiative starts from us and extends throughout the entire world. We constantly say that Brave is bringing the world to Bahrain and taking Bahrain to the world. I believe that sentence summarizes our challenges. It is a very competitive environment, with cultural differences, and economic
particularities, but KHK MMA and Brave CF see that as an opportunity to build bridges and create bonds.
Brave Combat Federation has already set some records, such as being the fastest growing sports media property in the Middle East. What are the long-term objectives of BCF? And how many of those objectives have been met so far? Brave CF’s goal is as bold as it is simple: transform the entire face of the sport of Mixed Martial Arts. For this, of course, you have many other smaller milestones, which we’ve achieved so far, like the internationalization of the vision, the expansion overseas, the establishment of a strong media base, and many others. In the long-term, the plan is always the same: transform the sport and give as much value as possible to the athletes. That is what keeps the wheel spinning and makes the hundreds of people working directly or indirectly with Brave CF in four different continents keep up the astonishing pace.
Tell us a little about Brave International Combat Week. How many organizations or fighters are participating, and from which countries? Brave International Combat Week is the muchawaited return of Brave CF to the Kingdom of Bahrain, and it’ll be the biggest combat week ever promoted.

Up Close and Personal 06 Brave CF will return to Bahrain in November, with Brave International Combat Week; in the picture, HH Shaikh Khalid during Brave 1 07 Inspiring and transforming the future of Bahrain’s youth is the main goal of KHK MMA and Brave CF
06
For starters, it will encompass the International Mixed Martial Arts Federation (IMMAF) World Championship. This is the first time ever for the event to be held outside of the United States. The future and the present of the sport will meet in Bahrain and, of course, all of them will have an eye on Brave CF as well - a lifelong dream for any amateur athlete. Last year, the IMMAF World Championship had nothing less than 53 countries represented and the expectation is for that number to increase in 2017. Brave CF will have its ninth fight night closing the week and, I don’t want to giveaway too much but, it’ll be the most stacked card ever. Champions, fanfavorites, and huge newcomers, all to live up to the triumphant return to Bahrain. Besides that, a series of parallel activities involving many different areas, turning the International Combat Week in a complete entertainment experience.
Brave Combat Federation has been hosted by several countries, including Bahrain. In your opinion, which countries have excelled at promoting their MMA tournaments and fighters? Every single country we’ve been to was special for different reasons. Of course, Bahrain was the
000-000 Up Close - Sh. Khalid D37.indd 24
07
first and it’s our home, so it has a key role in our plans, but every other place was also very important. Brazil is the home of Mixed Martial Arts, the United Arab Emirates is an important GCC partner and huge player in the martial arts scenario. India and Kazakhstan welcomed Brave as a turning point in the history of MMA, and Mexico is one of the most traditional nations in martial arts and became one of our most solid fan bases after the Tijuana event. At the end of the day, this is an international platform and a global promotion, talent and passion are more important than any national feature.
Is there a particular Bahraini MMA fighter you feel excited about? Who would you say holds enormous future potential? I feel excited about every single Bahraini athlete competing. It’s something natural. I live intensely their day-by-day and know deeply their struggles, so it doesn’t matter if we’re talking about a firstround amateur bout or a professional world title when a Bahraini brother is in the cage, my heart and soul are there as well. We have Hamza Kooheji, who was a key person in the creation of KHK MMA and is standing out at Brave CF, we have our IMMAF
medalist from the Bahrain national team but Bahrain is a land of Brave young people and whatever they go and whoever they fight they’ll do good and have my full support.
Outside of its sports value, what kind of potential does MMA hold for the overall benefit of the Kingdom? Are there plans in place to work with international organizations or to create profit from other sectors? What many people maybe don’t know that Brave is, of course, a huge sports project but, as I mentioned before, is also more than that. It is a national project which is shaping the future of Bahrain. It has created many diplomatic, economic, and business relations, expanded the foreign investment in the country, grew the business opportunities for the local market abroad, increased impressively the international awareness about the Kingdom of Bahrain and our initiatives, and defined a new vocation for our people. I say with confidence that KHK MMA and Brave CF were the biggest cultural shift in the history of Bahrain. bravefights.com // khkmma.com

Shaping Hospitality With over two decades’ worth of experience in the tourism and hospitality sector, Dr. Essa Faqeeh’s passionate work has transformed hotels and organisations into household names. As one of the partners at E-hospitality and Tourism, he helped pioneer the introduction of an innovative integration system to help achieve a more accurate classification of hotels and apartments, elevating the tourism industry of the Kingdom to the next level.
Interview with Dr. Essa Faqeeh What about the hospitality industry that sparked your interest in it? You just took me back 30 years! I started in 1988, when I joined the Gulf Hotel. I went abroad to study in Brighton College. At the time, I had already studied four years of Computer Science, which is my original background. When I joined Gulf Hotel, my interest was to become an IT manager, but I soon developed an interest in being on the front line. I climbed up the ranks until I became Deputy General Manager after 18 years at the hotel. By the time I left, I had already received my MBA and PhD in Hospitality Business. I thought, since this is what I enjoy doing, let me take this experience into the market. I later opened my own consultancy firm
What sets E-Hospitality apart from the competition? We changed the name from Exceed to E-hospitality because we did something different from what the

competition was doing. The hotels used to do classification in a manual process, but when we came along, we integrated social media reviews with the classification system. In the beginning, selling the idea was the main priority. We argued that up until that point, all the inspectors go in with a pen and paper. They were writing down the comment of one person, so why not integrate the reviews of people who stay at the hotel. From the hotel’s side, they can rate things like infrastructure, but the facilities are for the customers to use. We made a joint venture with a company in the Netherlands to integrate those systems together. We created a software for the inspectors so they can stop depending on the pen and paper. Using that system, they can take pictures, videos, or use document writing software. The full report would be available to both the Tourism Authority and the hotel managers automatically and with the click of a button. We created more transparency.

Can you tell us a little about the new Hotel Classification System for Bahrain? What was your role in it and how was that experience and how can hotels benefit from it? The new system was implemented in 2014. Unfortunately, at first, the Tourism Authority was not very responsive to our idea, so we proposed it to Abu Dhabi, which accepted it. However, Bahrain was still the first country to implement the integrated system. The biggest advantage of the system is that what people say about the hotel is exactly what is reflected. The idea here was to support the hotels so they can match their proclaimed standards by urging them to upgrade any aspect that fails to meet expectations. For example, most hotels need to renovate with seven to ten years because technology and people’s expectations keep evolving. We are also the only company that integrated apartments into the star rating.
the sector was always difficult because the majority of people looked at things like alcohol and could not work there because it was a different culture. When I was working for the Specific Council for Training in Hospitality, they had this platform of supporting Bahrainisation where we would provide training for Bahrainis with a focus on hospitality, and we would often struggle to fill certain positions because they required the person to deal directly with alcoholic beverages. However, we did manage to fill other roles such as administrative roles and increase Bahrainisation in hotels that didn’t serve alcohol.
Compared to when you first ventured into this field, what would you say have been the major changes that happened in Bahrain and the GCC region related to hospitality?
Outside of work, what other interests do you have? How do you usually spend your days?
Before the recession, hospitality was doing very well here. The occupancy rate in Bahrain was above 70%, and we had plenty of conferences and exhibitions. Things changed in 2008. Demand went down and businesses were affected. Thankfully, now things are coming up. Hospitality revenues are expected to reach $1 billion in 2020. Plus, the airport expansion will support further growth by accommodating more space for the aircrafts. And there is a train planned to connect GCC countries, coupled with more roads, which should ease traffic. Now, you can get visas online as well. This is undoubtedly a thriving sector.
What advice do you have for people who are about to venture into this field today?
What has been the most challenging part of your career in hospitality?
What does the future hold for Exceed Hospitality? Are there any plans you can share with us?
Challenges will always be there. During my time at the Gulf Hotel and through my consultancy work for other hotels, we faced a lot of difficulties when it came to Bahrainisation. Bringing more Bahrainis into
We introduced a new project that supports tourism and the hotels in the Kingdom. We created a system called KPI Dashboard, which collects the statistics of the hotels. In the past, this process had to be done
000-000 UCP - Essa Faqih D37.indd 28
manually. Every month or every quarter, the hotel would have to fill up the occupancy rate, revenues, and other information which they would then send to the Tourism Authority. Our system integrates the authority with the hotels. Now they have access to all of that information, which the hotels are required to give anyway in order to help them compile their statistics. Once it has been compiled, these figures would be published into the market. This system works in real-time basis and that helps achieve a higher rate of accuracy. The project has already received support and has been implemented and completed by the Tourism Authority.
Sports will always be number one for me. I almost feel like it is mandatory. I start every morning with sports. It is a must if you want your lifestyle to improve. You should always find room for it in your agenda as a priority.
Opportunities are big in this sector. Bahrainisation is at 20%, which means there is an 80% opportunity for you. There are a lot of hotel coming up, and it is all related to tourism and hospitality, but whatever you do in any sector, you have to be enthusiastic. You must have an interest in what you do. Always remember that knowledge is power. If you have a good understanding of the subject, then you will excel at it in the future, and if who you work for can see your passion, they will take you under their wings and develop you. ehospitalitytourism.com

What Mohammed Jalal began as a small home grown business laid the foundations for what is today a vast trade conglomerate spanning numerous industries. In remembering Mohammed Jalal, his pioneering and entrepreneur spirit for business cannot be denied. As one of my late father’s business partners, I was fortunate enough to witness this passion first hand.

ohammed Jalal’s passion transcended the lines of business; he had a fierce loyalty to his country, contributing greatly to its commercial and business environment. The combination of his vision and sharp business acumen complemented each other and made him an innovator in every sense of the word. Growing up with a role model like Mohammed Jalal influenced my life in many ways. Our two families have always been close. All the great memories I have of him reflect the rare kind of person he was. My childhood is full of cherished memories that reflect his amazing personality. Born in Muharraq in 1920, Mohammed Jalal studied at Bahrain’s first school, Al Hidaya Al Khalifiya Boys School. He was well educated for his generation and

later continued his studies in India. He made several generous contributions both in the fields of education and sports, and was one of the first to referee competitions in Bahrain. He supported sports both financially and in spirit, being a key supporter of Muharraq Club, among other sports organisations. He continued to have a passion for it throughout his life despite his hectic schedule. In his early years Mohammed worked alongside his father in the pearl industry from 1948 until 1950 after which he worked in the commercial registration business for 8 years. In 1958, he moved on to form his company, which is now a major conglomerate renowned for its diverse operations. For more than half a century, the company evolved to become one of the most prestigious family businesses in the Kingdom, contributing greatly to the development of

the nation. His perseverance was key to his success in all the sectors in which he was involved, including construction, oil and gas, contracting, engineering, commerce, information technology, food and beverage, travel, interior design, security services, and real estate management, among many others. His wide range of skills and vast experience aided him in his competent leadership of the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI), achieving several milestones for the institutions between 1974 and 1985. He is considered one of the prominent examples of self-made success in the Kingdom. Mohammed was always brimming with national pride, enriching public life in all its spectrums whether social or economic. He was involved in numerous charities and volunteer work, including being one of the founders of Bahrain Club and Bahrain Red Crescent Society. He was also the Chairman of the board of the Zaka Fund, and helped found Bahrain Charity Society. Along with a number of merchants and businessmen, he founded many companies and

commercial banks, some of which are Ahli United Bank, Investcorp, Bahrain Airport Services (BAS), and Bahrain Tourism Company. His companies operate throughout the GCC, also representing numerous international brands such as Schindler, General Electric, Suzuki Motor Corporation, British American Tobacco, Putzmeister, and others. He was the lead figure in several of these institutions, leaving his mark on all of them. In that period, a major shift in the Chamber resulted in him becoming closer to the wise leadership of the Kingdom, government institutions, businesspeople, and consumers. His role was pivotal, as he continued to be a problem-solver, removing many obstacles that were facing the commercial and industrial sectors. He left an endless impression and long lasting memories with all who were fortunate to know him and benefit from his leadership in all walks of life. He is survived by his sons Jalal, Ahmed, Sami and Fouad, and his two daughters Lulua and Fawzia. We will forever mourn the loss of one of Bahrain’s true visionaries.

Remembering Rashid Al Oraifi (1941-2017) Durrah pays tribute to one of the true pioneers of Bahrain’s art world, Rashid Al Oraifi, who passed away in March this year after a long battle with an illness. He lives on, through his work, in the imaginations of current and future generations of artists across the region who have been inspired by his example.
A
pioneer in every sense of the word, Rashid Al Oraifi’s art represented the link between old Dilmun and modern Bahrain. His career spanned almost 50 years and inspired an entire generation of local artists to come to the forefront when he became the first Bahraini artist to secure a commercial registration to open an art gallery in Bahrain and founded the Bahrain Contemporary Arts Association in 1970. He then continued to spearhead the artistic movement in the Kingdom when he, along with over 30 other Bahraini artists, founded the Bahrain Arts Society in 1983. Durrah celebrates the life of the late artist and sheds the spotlight on the enduring legacy he has left behind. Al-Oraifi’s first artistic inkling was the product of a mere coincidence that happened when his secondary school arranged a trip to the Bahrain

Fort. This is where he met Geoffrey Bibby, who was in charge of excavations at the fort during that time. The precious historical artifacts that Bibby had on display belonged to different times in the Dilmun era, and had a life-changing impact on Al Oraifi, who had frequently mentioned how enthralled he was by what he saw, and how all the pieces had been ingrained into his memory and were the ignition that sparked his artistic ambitions. Throughout his career, he held and participated in several exhibitions both in the Kingdom and abroad, with his works predominantly embodying Bahrain’s history and heritage. His first solo exhibition was in 1967, and despite being only 19 years old, he was among an elite few who had their own exhibitions during those days. The accomplishments that followed his first exhibition

He was the first Bahraini artist to have his own solo exhibition in Kuwait in 1976, and then in Dubai in 1978, and he was the first Bahraini artist to have an exhibition in Saudi Arabia after receiving an invitation from the Kingdom in 1975, the first Bahraini artist to receive the very first award given at the first exhibition held in the country in 1972, and he was also the first artist to ever create field statues in Bahrain. He made a long-term commitment towards keeping his art accessible to the public when he founded the Rashid Al Oraifi Museum in his hometown of Muharraq in 1994. An adaptive reuse of his family’s private residence, the museum displays his art creations such as paintings, statues, and sculptures, as well as his personal photographs detailing the various stages of his career and his numerous travels. Visitors can clearly see the influence that historic Dilmun seals, which depicted
000-000 SF - Rashid Al Orafi D37.indd 38
the daily lives of its population in the past, had on Al-Oraifi in his artworks. He believed that studying the identity of Dilmun era people, which were on the island of Bahrain over 5000 years ago, can add a significant dimension to the Bahrainis’ lives today, and can make them recognize their true identity and presence. In addition to his prolific work as an artist, he also penned a number of books spanning a range of topics related to Bahrain such as Bahraini arts and architecture, and has won several awards for his prolific work, the most notable being the Bahrain Competency Medal of the First Class which was bestowed upon him by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa on December 16, 2007, the Arab Historian Medal from the Union of Arab Historians in 1987, and the Dilmun Award in 1980. He was also a member of the Bahrain Red Crescent Society and the Bahrain History and Archeology Society, which were just a couple of the many community roles and positions he held in the Kingdom.
His patriotism extends beyond the fields of art, as his pioneering efforts have been carved into the foundations of Bahrain’s modern society as a whole. He once remarked that his generation was the one that aligned the visual arts movement with modern national establishments by managing culture, the stage, music, and many other important fields such as education. His progressive vision of the crucial role that arts can play in the future was immortalized in these lines: “A painting now has value and is deposited in banks just like gold or paper bills. Oil’s prices went down but the price of a painting can only go up. You can convert your money into a different currency and it would fluctuate, but a painting is always guaranteed. With the country’s cultural, economic, and political progress, the movement will tend to move in that direction.” The influence of Bahraini artist Rashid Al Oraifi on Bahraini art will always remain. His creativity, which helped spread beauty everywhere, will preserve his legacy for generations to come.

Being born in Bursa, one of the historically important cities of Turkey, Osman Geylan has a special bond with the great gems and jewels of the past. Combining expert craftsmanship with cherished heritage, each one of Gilan’s pieces tells a story of its own.

Interview with Osman Geylan Can you tell us about your start in the jewellery business? What role did your family have in sparking your interest in that field? I would not define jewellery as a business to me and I will tell you why. As the second generation of our family endevaour, I grew up in various parts of jewellery. Design studio, gemstones, ateliers were where I spent my childhood. My father has been my role model so sharing his passion meant everything for me when I was growing up. That’s why jewellery is not a business but a way of life for me. Jewellery is not an area where you have a logical justification for what you do, it is passion driven. The difficulties of making a beautiful piece of jewellery can only be surpassed by passion.
What would you say is the most difficult part of being in the jewellery business? You have to love the pieces you create so other people may consider owning them. And key to that is bringing best of the best together. You need to have a distinctive design, unique gemstones, impeccable craftsmanship, unmatched customer experience and so on. And this needs a 24 hour commitment. It is not like an office work where it is 6 pm and you are done. You have to live it 24 Hours.

Which famous jewellers have had the biggest influence on you? I am fascinated by Rene Boivin who was a master in using uncommon materials. Louis Aucoc for the art of enamelling who also taught and employed Rene Lalique. Ostertag for combining influences from Islamic religious architecture. Pierre Sterlé in fluidity of design and his technical expertise in adding a sense of movement to his jewels. And of course; Mimar Sinan, the chief Ottoman Architect of the Sultans and the greatest civil engineer in Istanbul’s history. It fascinates me how he took Istanbul and Anatolian heritage and created the Ottoman Architectural design.
Do you have a favourite piece from Gilan? This is probably the hardest question to answer. Gilan represents the soul of Istanbul. A city with thousands of years of history where empires ruled the world. We transform the footprints of those civilizations into beautiful pieces of jewellery. So all the pieces come with a fascinating story behind. But to name a few; i would say Istanbul Medallion, Bosphorus Cuff and Cintemani Hoop Earrings are my favourite. Just like other Gilan pieces, they have a simple but very strong design language that make them a favourite amongst some of the most influential women in the world.
Which has been Gilan’s most demanding or expensive masterpiece? After Sultan Mehmed II conquered Istanbul in 1453, he invited some of the best craftsmen around the world to the palace. For a long period of time, Istanbul became a capital for jewellery too. Those craftsmen came up with special jewellery making
000-000 UCP - Osman D37.indd 44
03
techniques. So even the simplest jewellery we make has hundreds of years of legacy behind. Some of the exquisite designs require inter-disciplinary techniques like various kinds of stone setting, enamel work, different grades of polishing. The latest Peacock Medallion is a good example. It took us more than 2 years to fully complete it. Most of its parts crafted separately and then brought back together. And a lot of times those parts were redone until there was perfect harmony. It is psychologically challenging too. But when you see it finished, the satisfaction is unmatched. It was purchased the very first day it was presented. So we did not have a chance to enjoy it as much as we wanted to.
How does Gilan stand out from the competition? Istanbul and its heritage separates us from the rest of the jewellers out there. It is a unique city just like our pieces. When you think about high jewellery it is actually the tale of cities. Paris, Geneva, Rome, London, New York and so on. Gilan tells the story of Istanbul. We do not want our designs to be locked up in the safes. We want them to be enjoyed. So all those sophisticated stories and legends transformed into pieces that can be enjoyed as much as desired.
How does the creative process work at Gilan? Where does the inspiration start? We are not just inspired by Istanbul, but we also live in it. Every corner of the city may offer you a surprise. The Imperial Women, Palaces, Art Works, Legends, Motifs and so much more becomes your inspiration. And it really starts there. As I have expressed before, you have to absolutely love what
you do, so other people might consider owning it. All these stories of the city fascinates us, so we transform this fascination into designs.
Aside from the work for Gilan, what do you do for fun? I spent most of my spare times reading about Istanbul’s history. I want to be a Romanist, Byzantinist and Ottomanist. Who knows maybe one day I may write a book about how those cultures have built the greatest city in the world. Learning is an endless journey. But sometimes you need to take your mind off of things because it maybe overwhelming. Since my childhood, automobiles have been a passion for me. I professionally started auto-racing in early ages and even now it is the only thing that takes my mind off of Gilan. You need 100% concentration to race otherwise it becomes dangerous. When you are driving sideways on gravel next to a cliff, you don’t think about Theodora’s state of mind when she single-handedly stopped Nico revolt and became the most significant woman in Istanbul’s history. I tried playing golf or other civilized sports but didn’t really help me take my mind off to have fun.
What are the future ambitions and goals of Gilan? As the story teller of Istanbul, we do want to take Gilan to full lifestyle level. With the changing taste ls and lifestyles, people like to discover and experience new tales. In that sense Istanbul is untouched. Our family wants to inspire the world by telling Istanbul’s story and how very distinctive and different cultures lived in the city for centuries. gilan.com

His Finest Hour
01 Pascal Raffy, Owner Bovet 1822 02 Château de Môtiers 40 ‘Butterfly’ 03 Braveheart® 22-Day Flying Tourbillon with reversed hand-fitting six times patented
Pascal Raffy discovered the fascinating world of Haute Horlogerie during his childhood when Sundays were spent with his grandfather, a watch connoisseur who used to show him the timepieces from his collection. Today, as the Owner of Bovet 1822, he is credited with reinventing the venerable Swiss brand and making his mark on the industry.
Interview with Bovet 1822 Owner Pascal Raffy How much of an influence did your grandfather have on your love of watches? I owe my knowledge and passion of fine watchmaking to my grandfather, who was himself a great collector. When I was a child, every Sunday he showed me one of the timepieces of his collection. These moments spent together are memories that I particularly cherish. I remember when my grandfather once explained to me that luxury calls for a clear identity, in small quantities and must be handcrafted. If you cannot answer these three main points, you are not talking about luxury. You can talk about industrial processes, globalization, that quantity is the essence and marketing is the tool.
000-000 Up Close - Pascal D37.indd 46
What do you think are the main changes between the timepieces in your grandfather’s days and the timepieces now? The collection that my grandfather presented to me was mostly made up of pocket watches dating from before the 20th century. They mainly differ to the timepieces that we manufacture today in terms of the development of micromechanical tools that has occurred since then. Because we uphold a traditional artisanal approach to watchmaking, as I have defined previously, we always work with traditional materials using artisanal methods, and the hands of our artisans remain essential to the excellence of our timepieces.
What has been the biggest challenge for you since taking over BOVET in 2001? The most important has been to have a team of 70 artisans sharing my values for excellency in fine watchmaking. Another challenge was the introduction of the Amadeo® system on our
collections in 2010. The Amadeo® system was in my mind right from the first day I acquired the House back in 2001 as our timepieces are characterized by their crown and bow placed at 12 o’clock, in the manner of the pocket watches, thus, the Amadeo® convertible system takes direct inspiration from BOVET 19th century pocket watches for which the House was renowned internationally. The Amadeo® system took eight years to develop. It is this uniqueness that represents BOVET. Another challenge was the arrival of our first watchmaking specialty caliber not regulated by a tourbillon, named Virtuoso II. It was a very important milestone in the development of our House and a first in the history of the Manufacture.
In your opinion, what kind of knowledge must one possess to succeed in today’s watchmaking industry? Passion is essential to obtaining results and excellence. It is key to understanding and

assimilating the specificities of the watchmaking world, which is unlike any other domain. It is also fundamental to keep to a course of action with a long-term vision that respects the values that constitute the soul and identity of the Maison. The whole difficulty lies in doing this while demonstrating the ability to adapt and innovate when faced with today’s fast-evolving geopolitical and economic landscape.
BOVET timepieces combine artisan craftsmanship and practical functions. Do you feel the brand embraces one over the other, or is it a delicate balance? This question is the key to the longevity and excellence of our House. The craftsmen at BOVET know the keywords that govern the development and manufacture of every single timepiece by heart: Reliability, Chronometry and Decorative arts. And where additional indications are displayed by added

complications, these must in turn be useful and functional additional indications for regular daily use. Beyond this, I try to keep the freest spirit possible in order to harmoniously combine innovation and tradition without any influence and without following fashion trends that are by definition ephemeral.
Which of BOVET’s watches had been the most demanding to create so far? And which has been your best-selling piece? Every single Bovet timepiece has been challenging. Is it about the mixture of decorative art and mechanical skill? Is it more about the mechanical skills and less about decorative arts? It’s like the birth of a child — the experience always involves fear and emotion. The present biggest one is the timepiece which will celebrate in 2022 our 200 years of uniqueness.
000-000 Up Close - Pascal D37.indd 48
Which of BOVET’s creations are you most proud of? The Braveheart® Tourbillon because it embodies, better than any other timepiece, the soul of our House. The flying tourbillon finds an unmatched legitimacy through the Amadeo® convertible case. Whether it is about decorative arts or chronometry, the Braveheart® Tourbillon exalts the secular heritage of the House and defines its future. If Braveheart® was developed and manufactured according to the rules of traditional watchmaking art it abounds with numerous innovations as evidenced by its six patents.
Has your long-term vision for BOVET 02 changed since becoming the owner? Are there successes left that the brand has yet to achieve?
My long-term vision has always been the same and it always will be. Our Maison will continue manufacturing excellent timepieces in accordance with the artisanal traditions of Fine Watchmaking. I will never exceed the annual threshold of 4,000 timepieces. This is essential to maintaining the uncompromising quality criteria that characterize our timepieces. Beyond this vision, the world and its changes – some of which are unforeseeable – lead us to continually adapt and endlessly compel us to take on new challenges, be they altering our distribution network, finding better technical solutions – as proven by the numerous patents that we file each year – or demonstrating innovation in the applied watchmaking arts, such as the luminescent miniature paintings that we exclusively presented in April of this year. bovet.com

With its storied racing heritage and relentless approach to development, Porsche is no stranger to making their presence felt at motor shows. Their latest showcase was at the Dubai International Motor Show 2017, where they unveiled their latest forays in the world of alternative fuel. Durrah spoke to the CEO of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, Deesch Papke at the Dubai Motor Show to find out more about the latest masterpieces of the iconic brand.
Advancing Forward Interview with CEO of Porsche Middle East and Africa FZE, Deesch Papke 02
How many times has Porsche participated in the Dubai Motor Show? What are your goals for participating this year? Porsche first participated in the Dubai International Motor Show in 2003, where we showcased a range of models including the Carrera GT. The brand has come a long way since then and in 2017 we are excited to bring four models to the Middle East for the very first time – the new Cayenne S, Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series, and the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo. Each of these models represent Porsche in a range of segments, from two-door coupes to four-door sedans, but what unites them is their true sports car credentials. This year in particular we want to highlight our latest advances in vehicles powered by alternative fuels sources – an approach which we refer to as E-Performance. For us, this means combing innovation in electric mobility with the trademark Porsche quality design and sports car performance. The Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, which will have its regional premiere

at Dubai International Motor Show, is the perfect embodiment of this. The model offers a balance between sporty performance, everyday usability and comfort features. It is now the top-performing Panamera derivative and points towards the future of the range.
Can you give us some background on the Porsches that will be present at the show? What makes them unique? Of the four regional premieres, the highlight will most certainly be the new Cayenne, the third generation of the brand’s most successful model and a very popular choice amongst Middle East customers. The drive, chassis, display and control concepts of the new model have been redesigned to further increase the spread between sportiness and comfort, something that becomes apparent as soon as you get in the car. Part of the testing phase of the new generation took place in Dubai thanks to the extreme heat we experience here in summer, and so it is fitting that it finds its Middle Eastern premiere at the Dubai International Motor Show.

Also appearing for the first time in the region will be the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid, our top model in the Panamera range; a 911 Turbo S Exclusive Series which offers increased power (607 hp), unique design features and an exclusive production run of just 500 units; and the Panamera 4S Sport Turismo, a new body version of the Panamera offering greater versatility and a 4+1 seating concept. Also on display and showcasing that the current range is the most dynamic in the brand’s history will be the Macan GTS, Macan with four cylinder, 718 Cayman S, 911 GT3 and 911 Targa 4 GTS, as well the three-time Le Mans winning race car – Porsche’s most advanced to date – the 919 Hybrid.
What area has been the focus of development for Porsche in recent years? Is there one area that it has exceled at in terms of technological improvements? E-Performance has been at the forefront of our 05 technological advancements in recent years and combines innovation in electrification with Porsche’s unmistakable quality build and sporty design. When the Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid launched earlier this year, it marked the first time Porsche had launched a plug-in hybrid vehicle as the flagship of a model line. The sedan boasts 680 hp and a 3.4 s 0-100 km/h acceleration rate – torque is instant and overall performance is undeniable. This is a car that you
really have to experience yourself, as it is a true testament to the advances Porsche has made in hybrid technology.
What sets the Porsche brand apart from the competition? One of the brand’s key unique selling points is its racing heritage. With more than 30,000 race victories around the world, with the most recent being our third consecutive win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race, Porsche knows how to build sports cars. The brand’s approach to vehicle development has always been to use the race track as a testing bed for new technologies, and to ensure that those learnings and advancements are taken further and implemented into road models. That is how our products continually evolve. To-date there have been a wide range of developments originating from the race track and transferred to customer-orientated road cars, including advancements in safety, efficiency and hybrid drive systems.
How would you describe the Porsche customer? What qualities do they tend to have? They value luxury, exclusiveness and quality above all else. They are discerning and entrepreneurial and, most importantly, they want to enjoy the driving experience. Porsche’s unique offering of04 true sports car performance

with exceptional usability and quality is what our customers look for. They also believe that the car they drive reflects who they are. Through Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, with the passion and craftsmanship of our experts, customers can personalise their car to transform it into something extraordinary.
Can you tell us about the latest breakthroughs or advancements in Porsche engineering that we should expect to be implemented future models? Every day, we strive to combine true sports car performance, with state-of-the-art technology and our soon to be launched Mission E model, is the latest embodiment of that. It is the first sports car in Porsche’s history to run purely on electric power and will be launched by 2019. It will boast over 600 hp, a 500km driving range, 0-100 km/h acceleration of under 3.5 seconds and a charging time of around 15 minutes to reach 80 percent charge. Earlier this year the brand announced from 2019, a Porsche works team will compete in Formula E, the world’s first purely electric racing series. In line with our Technology Transfer philosophy, Formula E will be key to the success of future Porsche sports cars, as it offers an ideal testing ground to develop the technologies needed for electric mobility. porsche.com

Turkish artist Fahri Cetinkaya has had his ceramic art exhibited in more than 40 countries. His art has been bought by Turkey’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism and exhibited in museums, and one of his most incredible creations was a 59-piece set of tiles depicting a world map drawn by Ottoman admiral, Piri Reis. Durrah sat with Fahri to find out more about his career beginnings, the sources of inspiration that fuel his passion, and to gain insight into the creative process of one of Turkey’s most unique artists.

King of the Ceramic Arts 02
Interview with Artist Fahri Cetinkaya How did you get into ceramics, and why ceramics and not another art form? I was 13 years old and in the first year of high school when I discovered this line of art. In addition to the regular courses at the high school, Çini-making (art of ceramic tile) course was the one of the two elective courses that we had to choose. During the summer holidays I used to work in the tile workshops in our neighborhood and I contributed to my family. The reason I chose this line of art and love it is that it is an art that does not need to protect itself. Because all other arts need protection. The works must be protected from air, sun, water, moisture or camera flashes. Furthermore, the art of tile is the only discipline that involves all four elements in the nature that is fire, water, air and earth. This is the reason why I call it “the king of the arts”.
000-000 Masterpiece Ceramics D37.indd 55
How much of your style comes from traditional influences, and how much from your own creativity? The art of tile (Çini-making) was started in Anatolia by the Seljuk around 1000 A.D. After the Ottoman State was founded the craft of tile production continued and developed in the workshops opened in Iznik and Kütahya around the 13th Century. Unfortunately, today’s works are nothing more than the traditional styles. It is a merely a copy of classic productions. Therefore, this art has long been suffering from lack of progress and even declining. What I am trying to do is try to create new things by adding modern touches while applying the traditional craft. I tried to differentiate by creating collection works in this way and working to improve this art. No work is a copy of those made in the past. I have always worked on unique patterns and my own custom designs.

The Piri Reis Tile collection is my biggest project. I started to work on this collection in 2008, secretly from everyone I know. By the grace of God, in 2012, UNESCO proclaimed the year 2013 as ‘The Year of Piri Reis’. When that announcement was made, I had already completed 54 pieces out of the 59 piece collection, and the other 5 pieces were waiting to be fired. After The Year Piri Reis was announced, I started to present this collection and share it and it didn’t take long before I received exhibition offers from the Four Seasons Hotel in Istanbul and then the Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center. I received widespread recognition for these exhibitions because it was the first time, in the history of tile production, that this subject was depicted. It was also the first time that such a large
and comprehensive collection was presented on a specific topic. I produced works of unusual sizes in tiles and ceramics, and the work was far more intricate than anything previously seen: up to 55 to 60 thousand lines and dye applications featured on a single 70 cm plate.
How would you describe your work’s appeal and value? What makes my work special is that it features proprietary techniques which I have developed myself. In the past 14 years I have only produced 161 pieces, all entirely handcrafted and one of a kind, which makes them unaffordable for many people. On some days I work for 16-20 hours and I can go 5 or 6 days without stepping out of the workshop, without seeing the sky and sun, because it is such a painstaking process.

How influential has Islamic culture been to ceramics? And how has it impacted your art? Ceramic and tile art draws heavily from Islamic culture because the Ottoman Empire was a great patron of this art form. They considered it one of the most important disciplines of fine arts in the land and ensured that it would live on for future generations. You can see a touch of Islamic culture in most of my works.
What is unique about Turkish ceramics? Turkish tile art gained momentum during the Seljuk and Ottoman years. Because, in these works, in the ultimate specimens of the art of tiles called the Glass technique, lead is not used. I do the same thing, with the same style and Glass technique without using lead and its derivatives. Besides, I am doing works of “Crystal Matte Glass which is a kind of technique that is not present in Seljuk and Ottoman era creations. I no longer do traditional and classical transparent tile glasses, I prefer this new technique which reinforces the vivid and realistic look of the patterns and colors on the work. This is an innovation in the 1000 years history of tiles.
Which artists do you admire the most and have had influence on your work? As I work in traditional and classical styles, there is nobody I can look up to as an idol for me. Because what we have been doing has no background rooted in the past, and never been done before. Both the patterns and the colors and most importantly, the innovations in the Glass technique are all first of its kind. These patterns, colors and glass technique should be regarded as grace of God. Because I discovered this technique while doing another research. And after seeing the results, I offered my infinite gratitude to God. Thank God.

Inspired by the Winston Legacy, the world’s most perfect pear-shaped diamond, Winston’s renowned team of gemologists, designers, and craftsmen embarked on a more than three year journey, exploring the world’s finest diamonds, to create an unprecedented collection that is unrivalled in scale and unmatched in quality. 03

Cartier Santos wristwatch and a Tank wristwatch were recently acquired for the Design Museum collection and included in its permanent exhibition Designer Maker User at its new home in Kensington High Street. The acquisition of these iconic pieces began a conversation between Design Museum Director Deyan Sudjic and Cartier to commission Norman Foster to curate an exhibition on the theme of Cartier and design. Foster agreed, since the Santos wristwatch was inspired by a passion of his: aviation. The concept of the exhibition was fine-tuned over the course of meetings in Paris, Geneva, the Manufacture in La-Chaux-de-Fonds, London and Milan. In telling the story of Cartier watchmaking and the invention of the modern wristwatch, Foster factors in the determining role of the sea change in society at the turn of the 20th century. Amidst upheavals in art, architecture, travel and lifestyles, the traces of a new world could be glimpsed.

Extracts from a scrapbook found in the Cartier Archives complement the exhibits with insights into the research work of designers at the Maison. The exhibition explored six main themes: the evolution of Paris and its influence on Cartier shapes, Louis Cartier’s connections with Santos-Dumont and other pioneers of the age, the birth of the modern wristwatch, the everyday and sophisticated accessories designed to cater to a glamorous inter-war lifestyle, the evolution of Cartier watch designs, and Cartier craftsmanship, with a focus on mystery clocks and skeleton movements. 07

Now that the time has come to switch to your summer wardrobe, why not give your timepiece a refreshing new look for the warmer months? OMEGA’s fantastic selection of “NATO” straps is the most convenient way of giving your watch a summer makeover that not only gives it a breeze of renewal, but is also sure to produce compliments and turn heads.
Historic Timepieces
O
MEGA’s “NATO” straps evolved from the leather and canvas straps used by British pilots, navigators and army personnel during World War Two. For safety reasons, wristwatches did not use removable spring bars to secure their straps. Their fixed bars, often soldered, were less likely to break than spring bars so there was less chance of losing the strap in conflict situations. There are three 5-stripe fabric straps with stainless steel buckles and fitted keepers; three nylon fabric straps with grey, orange or red border; a brown Novonappa leather strap; and an all-black coated nylon fabric strap with fitted black keepers and polished buckle. If you’d like to see how your watch looks with

a new “NATO” strap, Omega’s website has a virtual function that lets you mix and match with ease. You can experiment with different combinations without having to break out the strap changing tool. Why not have some fun and see what happens? If you’d rather see how your new “NATO” strap looks on the wrist, OMEGA’s boutique staff will be happy to help. Available for both ladies and gents, OMEGA’s “NATO” straps can easily be adjusted to any length and are thus perfectly suited to every wrist, or even the outside of a uniform. omegawatches.com

ULYSSE NARDIN EXECUTIVE MOONSTRUCK WORLDTIMER In its purest definition, the Moonstruck Worldtimer recreates the moon’s orbit and the apparent movement of the sun around the globe. Its celestial ballet, just as it is seen from the Earth, is unlike anything an astronomical watch has previously offered. This intuitive display hides a sophisticated mechanism that provides an unusually accurate indication of the phases of the moon. In the center of the dial, the Northern Hemisphere is depicted as seen from above the North Pole. Three concentric discs turn around this fixed map of the world. The outermost circle features a symbol representing the sun. This solar disc, which completes one revolution in 24 hours, also sweeps over a display of 24 time zones and is equipped with a day/night indicator. These markings control the Worldtimer function, allowing the wearer to simultaneously display the time in the 24 cities inscribed on the internal flange. As for the moon, this appears on a lower orbit. Two discs work together here: on top, the first functions as a circu-lar window showing the position of the Earth’s satellite; below, the second disc, in gold, shows the changing phases of the moon. ulysse-nardin.com

BELL & ROSS BR 126 RENAULT SPORT 40th ANNIVERSARY To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Renault in Formula 1, Bell & Ross has designed a model inspired by Renault’s first ever-single seater from 1977, the R.S.01. This watch is an invitation to get into the shoes of the professionals who work under extreme conditions. It is not only an instrument designed to support them in their missions, but an ally at all times. This vintage model immerses us into the world of racing by taking its inspiration from the first Formula 1 races’ DNA: its 41 mm case is made of satin-finish steel and its black and yellow dial are a reference to the colors of the Renault Sport Formula One™ Team. The timer is black on a yellow strip, reminiscent of the hatched decoration of Formula 1 in the Seventies, and guarantees an optimal reading of the chronograph function. This complication, invented for measuring short lengths of times, is the queen function in motorsport. It allows the performance of racing cars to be measured with great precision. The colors, the ultra-domed crystal, the rubber bracelet and the shape of the horns reinforce the vintage look of this piece. bellross.com

BOVET 1822 SECRET BEAUTY Made from Grand Feu enamel or applied to a mother-ofpearl or lacquered base, BOVET 1822’s miniature paintings have been enchanting collectors since the early 19th century. Consequently a miniature painting was chosen to personalize this timepiece. Numerous variations on the chosen theme – a Geisha – have adorned the backs or dials of BOVET timepieces since 1822. The version presented on this timepiece is, naturally, an expression that is entirely new. But it is above all the technique used to create it that lends the piece its prestige and uniqueness. A world first, the method is as unprecedented as it is luminous, entailing a combination of the traditional miniature painting technique with the application of layers of luminescent material. The work painted by the artist on the dial’s surface therefore becomes visible both by day and by night. But the virtuosity of BOVET 1822’s artisans inspired them to take this approach even further. Not content with glowing once night falls, the Geisha that adorns the dial literally undresses, her kimono disappearing as she lights up in the intimacy of the twilight. The artist is thus creating two paintings simultaneously. The artisan is also faced with a new constraint, in that he must repeatedly move from a lit room to a dark one in order to gauge each step of his meticulous work. bovet.com

BREGUET TRADITION DAME 7038 With this self-winding timepiece, Breguet has succeeded in feminising a model whose aesthetic essence lies in mechanical horology, a field that many tend to reserve for men. Although in full view, the main movement gear trains, as well as the bridges bearing them, remain sufficiently discreet to ensure smooth and instant reading of the hours and minutes pointed to by rose gold open-tipped Breguet hands. The sandblasted mainplate and bridges are rhodiumplated to create a pleasing contrast with the rose gold case. The latter’s bezel is adorned with 68 brilliantcut diamonds, while a watch jewel sets the perfect finishing touch to the crown. The magnificent craftsmanship lavished on this model is also visible through the back on the gold oscillating weight, graced with the same motif as the barrel. Equipped with Calibre 505SR, it features a lever escapement with silicon horns and a Breguet balance spring also made of silicon. This new Tradition Dame is set to assert itself as a major player on the scene of feminine Haute Horlogerie. breguet.com

HERMES ARCEAU The Arceau watch is a paragon of rigorous and stylish aestheticism. Created by Henri d’Origny in 1978, it plays on a paradoxical blend of classicism and fanciful design. Each of its details is meticulously thought out, while faithfully preserving its enviable ability to never take itself too seriously. The distinctive features of the Arceau watch are its font inspired by the elegance of a galloping mount, along with its asymmetrical lugs. It takes considerable pleasure in making light of conventional design codes so as to live its own time. A time to which Hermès artisans give life in the company workshops. The dial is available in a choice of two new shades: blue lacquered or hazelnut brown. Beneath the latter beats Manufacture Hermès Calibre H1837, a mechanism intended not to tame time, but instead to impart a specific cadence to each and every moment, savoured like a veritable object of desire. Time released from constraints – but never from style! Fitted with an abyss blue or etoupe matt alligator strap, it pursues its own path, forged by the artisans’ skilled hands. hermes.com

ELIE SAAB ESSENCE N°10 AMANDE TONKA The olfactory expression of an aesthetics blending splendour with sleekness, La Collection des Essences transposes Elie Saab’s virtuosic couture techniques into scent, each fragrance showcasing one the most iconic ingredients in Haute Perfumery. With ESSENCE N°10 AMANDE TONKA, for the first time, Elie Saab plays a fragrant duet. Two suave, delicious, desirable notes, with one point in common: the irresistible, almondy addiction they provoke. Francis Kurkdjian has chosen to blend these two assertive ingredients to reflect one of the Couturier’s masterful techniques: ombré, the subtle gradient of shades he uses to adorn the fabrics of his sublime gowns. The Master Perfumer weaves variations of the same scented hue around Almond and Tonka Bean. From light to dark. From a hint of bitterness to a haze of sweetness. From the delectable to the voluptuous. This melting blend of olfactory delights turns ESSENCE N°10 AMANDE TONKA into the most addictive of scents. eliesaab.com

PRADA LE INFUSIONS DE PRADA Les Infusions de Prada embrace the poetic paradoxes of the Prada universe. Through their delicate, translucent scent, they enact vibrant dualities: modern heritage, intellectual instinct, subtle power, rational sensuality. A product of the unique collaboration between Miuccia Prada and perfumer Daniela Andrier, each Infusion reveals a distinctive personality: a poetic interpretation of a single, emblematic natural ingredient. Light, airy, and long-lasting, these uniquely affective fragrances remain fresh, subtle, and sophisticated in their simplicity. The collection of seven singular scents—Iris, Iris Cèdre, Fleur d’Oranger, Amande, OEillet, Vétiver, and Mimosa—is now joined by Rose, a bright and feminine new fragrance, an open air scent brimming with early summer’s species roses. prada.com
LANCOME MAISON LANCOME Created in 2016, the Maison Lancôme collection is a tribute to the haute parfumerie savoir-faire from which the brand with the rose first grew. In 2017 this rose, which has been the iconic symbol of the Lancôme brand for over 80 years, finds itself at the heart of two completely new creations: Parfait de Rôses and Rôses Berberanza. Parfait de Rôses reveals itself through a succession of olfactory emotions, emerging between fresh and invigorating notes and a gourmand background, like an elegant interpretation of the famous French dessert from which this composition takes its name. Rôses Berberanza takes its name from a variety of raspberry whose fruity inflexions, in this fragrance, coat an oriental composition honouring the famous Damask Rose. lancome-me.com

he may be rugged up on the mountain, but she’s expressing her own singular style. Bold checks, volume contrasting modern shapes and a juxtaposition of tech and traditional fabrics inside the collection represent the essence of Dsquared2. The striking look is emphasized in a graphic color palette of grey, black, red and white. A sportswear influence characterizes pieces with contrasting volumes. Wide-legged maxi pants and voluminous coats in lustrous soft yet structured leather bonded with jersey have a glamorous attitude. Shell tops, knits and a contemporary jersey tracksuit with cropped pant are accented with athletic zips and stripes. A vintage mountaineering theme explores Dsquared2’s Canadian roots. Patterns and designs bring the brand’s heritage to the forefront: jacquard knits, a pine tree print and the distinct Dsquared2 red-and-black buffalo check. The fabrics come in key Dsquared2 cuts and style mash-ups: cargo pants with oversized patch pockets,

Free, sophisticated, feminine, and timeless, Carolina Herrera’s new FW2017 woman never forgets the importance of the essentials: the ability to leave her mark and always go a step further.
Sophisticated Beauty

er world is inspired by William Morris’s England, where this quality is mirrored in every item of clothing, every gesture and every movement. The whimsy of classic cottage gardens is combined with masculine accents, previously concealed. The adventure continues across the ocean, going from familiar Upper Eastside memories of New York to the city’s authentic, more intriguing side. Flowers, ruffles, honeycomb and houndstooth patterns dress our rule-breaking Carolina Herrera woman on her walk across town. Pleats and flared layers turn every step into an elegant spectacle, while waist-defining fits subtly outline her figure. Movement is never restricted thanks to a combination of carefully crafted patterns and refined fabrics. She is enveloped in hues of red, navy, yellow, grey, ivory and black; displayed in rich fabrics such as silk, taffeta, crepe

Her playful personality is accentuated by the presence of waist-cinching fluid skirts, dresses with alluring necklines, uncovered shoulders, shirts with large bows and flared trousers. In contrast, she explores her masculine side by wearing sophisticated pinstripe bouclé suit pieces. A final outstanding feature is the combination of houndstooth prints and delicate flowers, which create a perfect balance between her most daring, lively facet and the timeless sophistication of her spirit: the ultimate example of effortless elegance and beauty.. carolinaherrera.com

At certain points, passengers will alight from the train to participate in excursions, making this train a new kind of travel experience. There is a bar in the lounge car, as well as couches and rotating chairs for passengers to sit in while enjoying live musical performances. The rear of the lounge car also features a large bay window for enjoying the scenery as it flows by. The spacious rooms include the Deluxe Suites, where one carriage is split into two rooms, and the suite rooms, which are one carriage split into three rooms. This train provides a totally new travel experience. Throughout the journey, there will be scenery and experiences that could only possibly be encountered on the Seven Stars. Kinsei Lounge is where the journey begins. Kinsei means “Venus”, and this lounge has been made especially for the use of Seven Stars passengers. This is where passengers check in, and relax before being escorted to the platform in time to watch Seven Stars arrive. Kinsei is only used by Seven Stars passengers. Here, passengers

enjoy music from the pianist, and are served beverages and specially prepared sweets. The fourteen guest rooms on the “Seven Stars in Kyushu” are all suite rooms. These special rooms hold just 14 couples, keeping the number of passengers at an intimate size. The theme of the train is fusion of Japanese and Western design, as well as a mix of “old” and “new”. The numerous fabrics and the wood used abundantly throughout rooms are all superb pieces that have been carefully selected. The attention to detail on the “Seven Stars” is an unmissable feature throughout the train. During the day, the lounge car is a rest area. The modern Japanese atmosphere makes it an ideal place to interact with other passengers, creating a veritable meeting place on wheels. For those who want to relax alone, comfortable sofas offer spectacular panoramic views. In the evening, one can relax with a drink and enjoy live musical performances and other entertainment.

Kyushu is blessed by nature and is truly a treasure trove of gourmet food. The dining car “Jupiter” will offer passengers cuisine made from seasonal ingredients throughout the year. There are also occasions when passengers alight from the train for their meals. Enjoying the local air and flavors will make this cruise train journey even more unforgettable. Kyushu has long been the gateway to Asia and has enjoyed active exchange with the mainland since ancient times. That trend continues today, with the number of foreign tourists to Kyushu each year totaling around one million. Around 30 million domestic travelers also visit Kyushu annually, making their way here via air, sea, and land. Their exploration has been aided by the full opening of the Kyushu Shinkansen network in 2011. cruisetrain-sevenstars.com

Interview with Artist Luis Burgos What sparked your passion for the arts? Did you always want to be a painter? Yes, from a very young age I wanted to paint. The colors always attracted me and since I was not a good student, the desire to paint consumed me so completely that I had problems at home, mostly with my father, who did not see clearly that this was a way of life; rather a madness or an unproductive hobby. We were farmers, from the gardens of Varea, and that is why I sometimes say that I am a farmer-painter.
How would you describe your art? Is it traditional or progressive? My art can be defined as traditional, I am fundamentally a figurative painter. It is always the human figure, their looks, their feelings. With all the “modernity” or “contemporaneity” surrounding us, it is not more progressive to do what almost no one has done. There are infinite ways to represent a great figure and still we have not exhausted that subject nor do I think it will ever end. Everyone has their own way of seeing and representing and that is a value that’s as current as this very moment, or maybe we don’t all feel that way?
What tools or methods do you often incorporate into your paintings? For my paintings, I almost always use the canvas, only sometimes wood, and, once prepared, various brushes and acrylic paint, but since I like the paint to have body, I manage to give it a paste-like texture so similar to the oil that almost always, they ask me if it is one thing or another and there they are left with
doubt. In the catalogs, I usually summarize saying “mixed technique”, period.
Your paintings often feature faces with an emphasis on gazes and stares. What’s the significance of eyes in your work? They say that “the eyes are the mirror of the soul”. I feel they are the best way to express our inner emotions, our desires, our way of being, what we feel whether positive and negative, and who and what we actually are. To face a painting that’s looking straight at us, questioning us, reflecting our own conscience. I think there are many people who cannot withstand such direct questioning. It is true that whoever takes one of my paintings into their home, has just introduced one or several characters into their life, and assimilated their corporeality as part of their own. Therefore, the eyes, as elements that define and connect, are fundamental and if, sometimes, I paint characters with closed eyes, it is because their gestural attitude is so evident that the closing of the eyes is a form of affirmation, we are looking for and seeing that inner gaze that we all think we have.
Which artists have had the most influence on your style? Undoubtedly, the great painters of the Spanish art, Velazquez, Goya, Sorolla, Picasso, but also others from outside, like Chirico, Balthus or Edward Hopper, although there are many more and everything depends on the moment and the sensitivity that I seek in that moment.
Do you have a favourite piece from your work? My preference is for “Las Meninas” by Velazquez, not so much for the characters as for the atmosphere that is created, the air that surrounds the characters, that shapes of the figures, that physicality, the way it creates space. Velazquez is watching and everything he sees and observes he is creating, painting with his eyes. It is a picture with a thousand details that are each time different and you always find something new.
What has been the most demanding one of your paintings yet? A painting called “Las Meninas”. Here, the challenge was not to make a copy, but to interpret in my own way that atmosphere and space, and it was not easy. The dimensions are practically the same (315 x 275 cm), but the colors and the characters are mine, from my daily life. The question was to get that special atmosphere and I think I got it, after months and months of work. Also, the public loves it and if it impresses them, it must have something!
Spain has a long history of legendary painters. Do you feel that played a part in your decision to become an artist? Definitely. Being able to express myself with painting, being able to be me, ends up becoming a way of life, an obsession, and each painting is a challenge because it may be the solution to that desired communication. The great painters are great, precisely, because they have managed to connect with the

prevailing sentiment of the public. That is what I seek and I sometimes get it, or so they say.
In your opinion, what’s the biggest obstacle an artist has to overcome in today’s world to be successful? To succeed today, the great obstacle is time, or rather the rush to arrive. Everything needs to mature and for that it takes time, not to interfere or to run very fast in order to arrive sooner. We want everything right now, it’s the same with painting. Keep in mind that this “profession” is a long distance race, the elements have to be purified and only then do you find the essence. It is, of course, a philosophy that helps to survive and not give up. It is like wanting to eat good fruit, you have to give it time until it matures, because if it is green, you may like it, but it will never be ripe.
Is there a current artist you would like to collaborate with someday or an exhibition you would like to hold? What would be your dream project? Yes, with Barcelo (Miquel Barcelo), for how multifaceted his work is and for the freedom he seems to have when it comes to painting. My dream would be to be able to have all the necessities of daily life resolved so that I could dedicate myself completely, and with complete tranquility, to painting and discovering places, to try to capture their magic. Located in Luxury Vista, Aritiria Street, the space reflects the brand’s global retail concept, with an elegant design that captures the 142-year old Manufacture’s core values: origins, artistry and extraordinary relationships. The blend of wood, metal and idyllic landscapes of Le Brassus, immerses clients in the Vallée de Joux in Switzerland, birthplace of Audemars Piguet, and invites them to discover the brand’s heritage, craftsmanship and watchmaking expertise. Timepieces from all major collections will be showcased including emblematic models as well as pieces from the new collection - for watch enthusiasts and collectors to enjoy in the new Swiss watchmaker’s “Home away from Home”. On the occasion of the opening, Audemars Piguet launched its 2017 Royal Oak Chronograph collection in the Middle East. All seven models within this year’s new range of Chronographs feature a fresh, twotone dial design with several new yet subtle details: chronograph counters of increased size that expand at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock, shorter but wider hour markers, additional luminescent coating for better readability of the hour and new typeset and transfers. The date window has also been re-located between the 4 and 5 o’clock positions. These design details are showcased in a wide combination of finishes, including 4 pink gold versions with pink gold bracelet or alligator strap and a choice of brown or blue ‘Grande Tapisserie’ dials, and steel versions with stainless steel bracelets offered with a choice of black, silver or blue ‘Grande Tapisserie’ dials. www.audemarspiguet.com

ZHONGSHUGE BOOKSTORE, CHENGDU Zhongshuge was designed with the desire to create the most beautiful bookstore for readers. The result is a magical forest of books which inspires reading, learning, and reflection. The store is located within the bustling Star Avenue commercial centre, Binjiang District, adjacent to the Qiantang River. Walking from Phase 1 to Phase 2 of the mall, you pass a wholly transparent glass curtain wall fully covered with books. Beyond these is a central atrium, a pure white space containing circular bamboo-shaped bookshelves which rise up straight to the sky. These are reflected in the ceiling mirror above and appear to be having a conversation beyond time as the tree-like bookshelf pillars tirelessly emit the light of knowledge to anyone who seeks it. The space is scattered with small reading tables shaped like bamboo shoots. The walls are also mirrored, which create an unbounded visual expanse of books. The architect’s vision is to remind readers that knowledge is as indispensable as oxygen from trees in our lives. Walking through the book forest, visitors come

to a doorway which leads to the massive main hall of Zhongshuge. Here, the entire bookshelf extends endlessly to one side. The alternately dark and light coloured shelves are reminiscent of mountains, silently conveying the power of knowledge. Overhead, chandeliers glow softly like fireflies. Zhongshuge also features a children’s pavilion, which is designed as a book playground. Bookshelves are shaped like playground rides such as merry-go-round, roller coaster, hot air balloons, and pirate ships, so that children equate books and learning with fun and adventure. The floor features a giant map of our galaxy to inspire the imagination. The famous British novelist Somerset Maugham once said, to acquire the habit of reading is to construct for yourself a refuge from almost all the miseries of life. Zhongshuge gives readers a space where they can retreat from the world and spend entire afternoons curled up with a book and a cup of tea to find some peace. www.xl-muse.com

Fan Food
For over 70 years, Dairy Queen has been creating memories for millions of customers with its delicious menu offerings, and even gaining the distinction of being the inventor of soft serve ice cream. International Dairy Queen CEO, John Gainor tells us about the unique ingredients of what shapes one of the most iconic names in the food industry today and its future expansion plans.
Interview with International Dairy Queen CEO, John Gainor Was it a challenge adapting to the role of CEO when you first took the position? What was the most difficult part? I assumed my role as CEO at a time when the US and the world were heading into a recession, so I would say the biggest challenge to me was implementing a new strategy in a declining economy. Prior to taking on the role of CEO, I was running the supply chain operations at Dairy Queen, and a big part of our strategy was to grow our international business. We needed to decide which investments needed to be made to build the right structure internationally. We have been quite successful at that.
Can you give us some of the milestones DQ achieved in the last ten years? We are a 77 year old brand, and the beauty of it is that we are still growing. We have had positive growth the last seven years after the recession, both in sales and in new unit development. One of the biggest accomplishments has been our ability to remodel old stores into our Grill and Chill concept, as well as build new stores. We have 6800 branches worldwide, and 4600 in the US. Our international units are the fastest growing.
What would you say defines the DQ brand in the eyes of the customer? Dairy Queen invented soft serve ice cream. We then added our food business to go along with it. Most people think of DQ and have good memories, like going to get a blizzard or ice cream cone. When you tell people you work for Dairy Queen, they will often tell you about their experience at their local branch. You don’t get that with many other restaurant chains. Which country in the Middle East has had the biggest positive response to DQ in terms of sales so far? Bahrain is definitely one the most established markets,
122-123 UCP - Dairy Queen D37.indd 123
and it is great to see us continue to open new stores here. Saudi Arabia has also been a country with tremendous growth. In the last two years alone, we opened branches in Jordan, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Oman. We really are growing throughout the Middle East, primarily with our Grill and Chill markets.
The world now has plenty of options when it comes to fast food. How does DQ stand out from the competition? I would say it is quality. The ingredients we use in our products are some of the highest quality ingredients used in the quick serve burger industry. There is also our recipe for soft serve ice cream, the quality of the food, and the experience. Today, people look at value, and just the price. It is a combination of the experience and what you pay for.
DQ’s partnership with Jawad Business Group has been going steadily for decades. What does DQ look for in a franchisee? When we go into a country, we look for people who have deep knowledge of that country as we obviously can’t know everything about that country. We also look for people who share similar values. Business is about relationships, and when you’re dealing with people, you want the ones who would be open and honest with you, while never forgetting that you still need to make a profit. You need to be a good business partner.
what customers buy more of in the US and Canada. Over the years, both sides of our business continued to grow. We try to introduce limited time offers and create flavours that would appeal to certain demographics such as our kofta wrap. In many cases, we will find flavours that appeal to that country. This is part of our success, being able to adapt to what the customer wants, which we have done in many of our products.
Can you tell us about some of the global or social initiatives that DQ has been involved in over the years? In addition to running a business, we feel very strongly that businesses need to give back to the local community. For example, in North America, we have been associated with Children’s Miracle Network hospitals for 33 years. We have raised and donated over 125 million dollars to help children. In many of our international markets, our franchisees find a social cause that they can be involved in and would raise funds for their community and country. It is important that you would be willing to give back to your community.
What are your future goals for DQ? How do you take such a popular brand to the next level?
Is there a major difference between what customers in the US are looking for and what customers in this region are looking for? How does DQ cater to regional taste?
Our plans include continued growth in North American markets and all of our international markets. Our Middle East markets hold real potential, and we have identified several other new markets outside the Middle East as well. We will be opening in South Korea in the 4th quarter of this year. Our future plans also include expansion in Brazil, which will be our entry in South America. The reason we are so successful at growing is because we call our customers ‘fans’. They root for the brand, and help it grow, one fan at a time.
Customers in the Middle East buy more of our food products than they do our treats and cakes, which is

Modern Astana is a planned city, like BrasĂlia in Brazil, Canberra in Australia, Huambo in Angola, Milton Keynes, UK and Washington, D.C. in the United States. After Astana became the capital of Kazakhstan, the city cardinally changed its shape. The master plan of Astana was designed by Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa. As the seat of the Government of Kazakhstan, Astana is the site of the Parliament House, the Supreme Court, the Ak Orda Presidential Palace and numerous government departments and agencies. It is home to many futuristic buildings, hotels and skyscrapers. One of the most prominent structures in Astana is the Astana Expo-2017 exhibition complex, named the Sphere. In the non-exhibition zone it is planned to build a conference center, press center, indoor city, residential buildings and hotels. The main building of EXPO is the National Pavilion of Kazakhstan, which will be constructed in the form of a sphere with the use of the most advanced technologies. On the main facility called “Sphere”, the advanced photovoltaic technology will be used allowing to produce electrical energy without disturbing the planned futuristic design. The pavilion will be provided with the reduced power consumption from the grid. This technology will be presented by two silent wind turbines, which can be installed in the city and the work of which does not depend on wind direction and fluctuation. On eight levels of Sphere, visitors will get to know various directions in the field of energy - energy of the space, the sun and wind,

Water-Green Boulevard (Boulevard Nurzhol) is a visual masterpiece of a fountain which is located on the left bank of the River Ishim. This construction has a pedestrian zone, extending from the president’s residence Ak-Orda to the shopping centre Khan Shatyr. There are several architectural sites along the boulevard, which were built by famous Russian and foreign architects. A parking facility is on the lower level, the middle level is occupied by commercial pavilions and business offices, while the pedestrian area, decorated with flower beds, fountains, beautiful floral walkways with benches occupies the upper zone. MANDAREN ORIENTAL, MARRAKECH Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech marks the debut of Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group in Africa. A modern and elegant resort nestled in the heart of 20 hectares of olive groves and gardens featuring 100,000 fragrant roses, the property celebrates the rich Moroccan heritage through subtle Berber references. The resort redefines luxury hospitality in the Red City by way of accommodation made up solely of private villas and suites set in lush greenery. A new dining experience comes through three restaurants and bars, among which the restaurants Mes’Lalla led by
16
Chef Meryem Cherkaoui and Ling Ling by Hakkasan. The Spa at Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech offers the renowned signature treatments that have made the group’s international reputation, as well as treatments inspired by Moroccan traditions. The luxury experience is completed by the group’s unparalleled service, allied to the best traditions and hospitality of the Moroccan Kingdom. Rustic yet sophisticated, the design of Mandarin Oriental, Marrakech was undertaken by the French duo Patrick Gilles and Dorothée Boissier. With its Berber and Andalusian-Arabic influences, the feel is of relaxed luxury for the cosmopolitan traveller. Interior and exterior spaces co-exist and the focus is on essential materials rather than ostentatious affectations, with a particular emphasis placed on light. Morocco’s cultural diversity has been fused with Eastern and Western touches to give a sensation of travelling around the world as one moves through the main building. The villas, meanwhile, whose architecture recalls that of intimate riads, lend a timeless feel, while the suites, with their scenic views of the Atlas Mountains, immerse guests in the heart of the local landscape. The architecture of the spa, a tribute to the ancient mosques and cathedrals of Andalusia, encourages spiritual contemplation and deployment of the senses. Each villa is built in the Moroccan style around a private pool in a lush garden with fig, apricot and other fruit trees. The interior decor is a tribute to the fascinating culture and Berber tradition as depicted by traditional tadelakt motifs, mouth-blown vases and handwoven wool rugs. To offer an experience resolutely oriented to well-being, the villas feature elegant marble bathrooms, with specially developed products by local paraben-free brand Nectarome. The pool and outdoor areas are an invitation to relax and unwind either in the warmth of the sun or in a shady alcove filled with traditionally designed cushions from Marrakech homewares label Moon Garden. mandarinoriental.com

Add the onions and cook over medium-low heat for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until they become translucent. Remove 80% of the onions and set aside to conserve for later. 3. Add the bell peppers and peas and cook over medium heat for 5 more minutes. 4. Lower the heat, add the garlic, and cook for 1 minute longer. 5. Stir in the rice, chicken stock, saffron, red pepper flakes, cumin, salt, and pepper and bring to a boil. Cover the pan with aluminum foil and place it in the oven. 6. After 15 minutes, stir the rice gently with a wooden spoon, add the lobster tails on top (shell-down, brushed with olive oil) and merguez and return it to the oven to bake uncovered for 10 minutes, until the rice is fully cooked. 7. Transfer the paella pan back to the stovetop and add the licorice-flavored liqueur, gently pushing holes in the paella. Cook over medium heat for 1 minute, until the liqueur is fully absorbed by the rice. 8. Turn off the heat and cover the paella; allow to steam for 2 minutes. 9. Sprinkle with the parsley, garnish with freshly cut lemon wedges, and serve hot.

6 1/2 pounds tomatoes, cored 2 pounds seedless watermelon, peeled - 2 cups coarsely chopped, 2 cups diced 2 pounds cucumbers, peeled and seeded - 2 cups coarsely chopped, 2 cups diced 1/4 cup sherry vinegar 3 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil Salt and freshly ground pepper 6 scallions, thinly sliced 2 jalapeños, seeded and minced 1/2 cup chopped cilantro 1/4 cup fresh lime juice 1/2 cup minced chives, for garnish
Method 1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add the tomatoes and blanch until the skins are loosened, about 30 seconds. Transfer the tomatoes to a large rimmed baking sheet and let cool. 2. Peel the tomatoes and halve them crosswise. Working over a coarse sieve set over a large bowl, squeeze the tomato halves to release the seeds and juices. Press on the seeds; you should have about 2 cups of tomato juices in the bowl. Coarsely chop enough of the tomatoes to make 4 cups. Cut the remaining tomatoes into 1/2-inch dice. 3. In a food processor, puree the coarsely chopped tomatoes with the reserved tomato juice and the 2 cups each of chopped watermelon and cucumber. Transfer the soup to a large bowl. Stir in the diced tomato, watermelon and cucumber, the vinegar and 1 tablespoon of the olive oil and season with salt and pepper. Refrigerate until chilled, at least 1 hour. 4. In a small bowl, mix the scallions, jalapeños, cilantro and lime juice; season with salt and pepper. Ladle the soup into bowls, drizzle with the remaining 2 tablespoons of olive oil and sprinkle the chives on top. Pass the scallion relish you’ve made at the table. *Make Ahead This watermelon gazpacho can be refrigerated overnight.

Chuletòn Ingredients Serves 2 Preparation Time: 30 minutes Cooking Time: 20 minutes Total Time: 50 minutes • • • •
One 3” thick (about 2 1/2 pound) bone-in rib-eye steak (dry aged) Freshly ground black pepper Coarse salt Fine salted butter, at room temperature, for serving
Method 1. Let the meat stand at room temperature for 1 to 2 hours before cooking, covered with a clean kitchen towel. 2. Prepare the grill for direct heat: Light the wood briquettes; when they are ready, distribute them evenly under the cooking area. For a medium-hot fire, you should be able to hold your hand about 6 inches above the coals for about 4 or 5 seconds. When ready to grill, clean the grate well with a wire brush. Use an old dish towel to lightly oil the grate. When all of the coals are covered with a thin white layer of ash, you can start grilling. 3. First, remove the ash by blowing gently on the coals. Rake a thin layer of coals onto the middle of the grill; the coals should cover an area slightly larger than the steak. 4. Sprinkle the meat with salt and pepper on one side and place this side down over the coals. Cook uncovered for 12 minutes without touching or moving the meat. 5. Meanwhile, start more wood briquettes in a chimney starter; you will need this to finish cooking the steak’s second side. 6. After 3 minutes, the steak will start browning; after 6 minutes, it will be nicely browned but not burnt. After 12 minutes, the steak will have a thick, attractive crust, but it must not be burnt. Adjust the heat either by placing the grill grate higher or lower, or by raking in and/or raking out coals. 7. Use tongs to turn the meat over. Add fresh hot coals at this point, distributing them directly and evenly under the steak. Cook for 8 on the second side, until browned. 8. Transfer the steak to a cutting board; let it rest for at least 4 minutes before carving. 9. Sprinkle generously with salt and pepper before cutting into thick slices.

Ferrari GTC4Lusso T
W
hile at first look it might seem identical to the GTC4Lusso V12 model it’s based on, the GTC4Lusso T bears some subtle differences, such as the wheels and four exhaust outlets poking out of the diffuser. It’s also higher off the ground than the Lamborghini Huracan or the McLaren 570S, which gives it a drivability advantage. The differences under the hood, however, are far less subtle. Powered by its award-winning Turbo V8 engine, and holding the advantage of combining 4-wheel steering with rear-wheel drive, the GTC4Lusso T unleashes 610hp at 7500rpm, rocketing from 0-100km/h in 3.5 seconds. It utilizes the third generation of Ferrari’s Slide Slip Control (SSC), integrated with the F1-Trac traction control and E-Differential, where an electronics package takes information from the various sensors dotted around the car to improve traction and apportion torque to the inner or outer rear wheel according to grip and
168-173 D-Experiencee D37 - Ferrari.indd 169
many other variables. Optimum weight distribution is achieved by mounting the V8 engine way back in the engine bay, which helps improve agility. The Lusso T is also 50kg lighter than the V12 model. Unlike the GTC4Lusso, which was basically a restyled FF, the Lusso T boasts some interior innovations all of its own. It’s the first V8-engined four-seater Ferrari, as opposed to the usual 2+2 formation. This combination of innovative interior and powerful performance is what gives the GTC4Lusso T its name, as the ‘4’ stands for four-seater, and the ‘T’ denotes its twin-turbocharged V8 engine (Lusso means ‘luxury’ in Italian). The interior is also swathed in beautiful natural leather hides, and features Ferrari’s new infotainment system. The Lusso T does, however, still retain some of the practical features we have been accustomed to with Ferrari, such as using the steering wheel to operate everything that isn’t controlled via the touchscreen.

The only thing that we found lacking about the Lusso T was the sound, as that addictive, high-rev howl long associated with naturally-aspirated Ferraris is gone. This is because the GTC4Lusso T has a valve in the exhaust that opens if you select Sport on the steering wheel manettino switch, which produces a fruitier exhaust note, and is more muted in the Comfort setting. We’re not alone to miss the Ferrari howl, as many other car journalists and enthusiasts picked up on that detail. Be that as it may, you’d be hard-pressed to find someone turning down a Ferrari V8 because it doesn’t match the sound of previous Ferrari models. According to Ferrari, the Lusso T has come about entirely as a result of customer feedback. While the

FF brought its own different, wide-ranging group of customers with a younger average age, Ferrari is targeting the Lusso T at an even younger audience within that group, aiming at the 30 to 45-year-old demographic, who will undoubtedly appreciate the fourseat capability and the greater practicality than Ferrari’s mid-engined sports cars. The GTC4Lusso T is poised to be the modern Ferrari for a younger age. It’s fast, comfortable, stylish, and genuinely practical, creating a unique combination of performance figures and features that add to the feeling that you could drive it all day. www.ferrari.com

BENTLEY FLYING SPUR DESIGN SERIES BY MULLINER Bentley Motors has announced full details of the new Flying Spur Design Series by Mulliner, which is now available to order for customers across the Middle East. Comprising a selection of five interior and exterior accent colour splits – Mandarin, Pillar Box Red, White, Kingfisher and Azure Purple – this new limited edition delivers a unique and exclusive design take on Bentley’s luxury sedan, curated by Bentley’s personal commissioning division, Mulliner. Only 100 examples of this exclusive limited edition will be produced by Mulliner. The Design Series is available across the four-car Flying Spur range – V8, W12, V8 S and W12 S. The new Flying Spur Design Edition has been created by Mulliner for the Bentley driver who seeks a more extreme, bespoke interpretation of the performance-oriented sedan. The new Flying Spur Design Series by Mulliner is characterised externally by bright coloured fine lines contrasted with blackened brightware (W12 S only), to enhance the dynamic, performanceoriented nature of the Flying Spur. Inside, the hallmarks of Mulliner – Bentley’s personal commissioning division – include fine leather

detailing picked out in bold colours, new materials and technical precision. The new Flying Spur Design Series takes its inspiration from the finest details: the flash of colour on a suit lining, or the vibrant stitching on a leather saddle. The exterior of the Flying Spur Design Series is marked out by a bold, front-bumper design (V8 S and W12 S models only), a lower fine line and LED Welcome Lamps. The front bumper detail and the lower fine line, which runs along the doors to the rear, are highlighted with a striking colour accent. At night, the Welcome Lamps reflect the word ‘Mulliner’ on the ground. In an automotive first, Mulliner has also showcased the technical precision and sporting prowess of Bentley with the use of Titanium-enriched carbon fibre on the waist rails and fascia panel. Previously, this highly technical finish was only used in the aviation industry. The treadplates are finished in one of the five accent colours and feature a ‘Mulliner’ illumination. bentleymotors.com

The 2017 Cadillac Escalade features a modern design, powerful capability and sumptuous amenities that keep luxury firmly in the driver’s seat. 2017 updates include availability of the award-winning Rear Camera Mirror and Automatic Parking Assist. There are also aesthetic updates for Escalade, including two new exterior paint colors and a new 22-inch wheel design. The product line includes the standard Escalade and the extended-length ESV edition, which offers a 355 mm (14-inch-longer) wheelbase and approximately 508 mm (20 inches) more in overall length, maximizing space for third-row passengers and providing over two and half times the cargo space behind the third-row seat. Escalade trim levels have been renamed for better customer clarity: Escalade, Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum. All models are standard with 4WD drivetrains, powered by a 6.2L V-8 engine backed by an eight-speed automatic transmission. In the 2017 Escalade, the highest level of
craftsmanship defines the passenger spaces, with technology seamlessly integrated throughout the luxurious interior. Real wood combined with premium cut-and-sewn materials and sueded accents, along with ambient lighting, add elegance to the interior design. Precise controls and triplesealed doors were engineered and designed to reinforce a feeling of quality. The 6.2L engine also delivers an EPA-estimated 16.1 L/100km on the highway for the Escalade/ESV 4WD. Cadillac’s Magnetic Ride Control, the world’s fastest-reacting suspension system, is standard, delivering precisely controlled driving performance. At its core, Escalade is an SUV with the capabilities of a full-size truck, enabling a trailering rating of 3,674 kg on the standard model and an 3,538 kg rating on Escalade ESV – more than Mercedes-Benz GLS550 (3,401 kg), Lexus LX 570 (3,175 kg) and Land Rover Range Rover (3,499 kg). cadillacarabia.com

ROLLS ROYCE DAWN BLACK BADGE Created to satisfy overwhelming demand from a new breed of Rolls-Royce patrons, Dawn Black Badge stands as the most luxurious, social and sensual space from which to take in the night air. This most glamorous, uncompromising expression of open-top luxury is given a new and darker sensual dimension through its suite of Black Badge engineering and design treatments. In creating Black Badge, Rolls-Royce’s Bespoke designers have sought to create true signifiers of this more assertive alter-ego for the marque. Dawn gets this same treatment. The Spirit of Ecstasy – itself a mascot that has taken many different forms throughout the marque’s history – transforms into a high-gloss vamp, finished in a perfectly executed black chrome. This transformation to a darker aesthetic extends to certain chrome surfaces including the front grille surround, boot lid finisher, exhaust pipes and air inlet finisher. The effect is an authentic
transformation that speaks of a bolder, more confident sensibility. Finally, the ‘Double R’ signifiers on the Rolls-Royce badges are inverted in colour, confirming the creation of a true alter-ego of the marque. This bold, edgy design ethos extends beautifully into the interior – an exquisitely appointed staging point for patrons who seek to discover the night’s elements with the roof down. Inspired by Rolls-Royce’s aviation heritage and echoing advanced production techniques for stealth aircraft, a beautiful and highly innovative new treatment for the car’s surfaces has been conceived. Its construction displays every hallmark of Rolls-Royce’s fastidious attention to detail. Threads of aircraft grade aluminium, a delicate 0.014m in diameter, are woven together and then bonded in carbon fibre. Surfaces are then finished with six coats of lacquer before being left to cure for 72 hours and hand-polished to Rolls-Royce’s hallmark
mirror finish. The result is a highly contemporary finish, perfectly attuned to the darker more menacing aesthetic today’s patrons of luxury demand. Reflecting the marque’s Bespoke philosophy, Dawn Black Badge also plays host to a new interior palette break-up. Higher levels of exquisite Black leather are accented boldly with Mandarin highlights, including a strip of orange highlight which encircles the cabin at hip-height, evocative of the sunset before the passengers are immersed in darkness. A final touch, in a nod to one of Rolls-Royce’s great pioneer patrons, Sir Malcolm Campbell, finishes the rear interior space. His famous ‘Infinity’ rating logo beautifully embroidered into the car’s rear waterfall, gives a subtle nod to a man very much possessed of the restless spirit that so defines the Black Badge attitude. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

ASTON MARTIN VANQUISH ZAGATOS Consisting of the Vanquish Zagato Coupe, Vanquish Zagato Volante, Vanquish Zagato Speedster, and Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake, this ‘family’ of four Vanquish Zagato models will yield a total of 325 cars. As the first member of the family, production of the Vanquish Zagato Coupes commenced in late 2016. Next to enter production was the Vanquish Zagato Volante. Once again strictly limited to 99 cars (all of which have been sold), production has commenced and deliveries will be completed through 2018. Completing the quartet, the Vanquish Zagato Shooting Brake will also enter production in 2018, with a total build run of 99 cars matching those of the Coupe and Volante. With all four cars based upon the Vanquish S, each Zagato enjoys the combination of 600PS naturally-aspirated V12 mated to the smooth, slickshifting Touchtronic III transmission. Together with adaptive damping – fine-tuned for each model the Vanquish Zagato family promises exceptional driving pleasure that is every bit as stimulating and memorable as their design. The Speedster and Shooting Brake represent the two extremes of the Vanquish Zagato family. The former is an uncompromising roofless design that expresses the raw excitement of an open-top ultra-high
174-183 Automotive D37- Cars.indd 183
performance sports car. The boldest aspect of the Speedster’s design is the Speed Humps that rise up to form streamlined cowls that flow back from the seats, representing Zagato’s signature ‘double-bubble’ roof. All the body panels are made from carbon fibre, while shared details, such as the Aston Martin Vulcaninspired ‘Blade’ tail lights and repeated 3D Zagato ‘Z’ motifs in the front grille and rear vent meshes, create an unbroken stylistic thread that connects these otherwise individual creations. The Shooting Brake is still a strict two-seater, but one conceived as an individual and exceptionally practical GT. The extended roof on the concept sketch bears the iconic Zagato ‘double-bubble’ surfacing complete with glass inlays to let light flood into the cockpit. The sculptural roof culminates in a powered tailgate that opens onto a luxuriously trimmed rear cabin area, complete with a tailored luggage set. With dramatic herringbone carbon fibre facia with anodised bronze rotary controls, extensive ‘Z’ motif quilting and the option of a fully aniline leather upholstery, the Shooting Brake is a fitting complement to the Coupe, Volante, and Speedster. astonmartin.com

LAURENT FERRIER AND URWERK ARPAL ONE It’s neither a Laurent Ferrier watch nor an URWERK, yet the signatures of both firms appear on its back. The existence of this unexpected watch defies logic because it is the joint effort of two watchmaking companies that couldn’t be more different. Each bases its identity on the opposite ends of watchmaking’s stylistic spectrum. On one side, the expression of time-honoured traditions; on the other, an anarchic effort to overturn conventions. Laurent Ferrier and URWERK have created a piece of work that is unique, for only one-of-a-kind watches qualify to be sold at the Only Watch auction in aid of the battle against Duchenne muscular dystrophy. laurentferrier.ch

MONTEGRAPPA GAME OF THRONES IRON THRONE PEN To represent the intricacies and complexities of the Iron Throne itself, Montegrappa’s artisans have fashioned a cap formed of overlapping swords representing the seven kingdoms. Their hilts rise above the cap’s top to create a crown, the pommels and blades running the length of the cap itself. Standing proud is a sword that serves as the pocket clip, its hilt bearing a fiery red ruby. At the cap’s top, surrounded by the swords’ hilts, is the Game of Thrones logo. The pen’s barrel, a truly virtuous artwork fashioned in precious metal with the lost-wax casting technique, represents the saga through symbols evocative of the houses, from dragons to stags. DOLCE&GABBANA FAB28 SMEG REFRIGERATOR Dolce&Gabbana and Smeg have teamed up once again for the design of a special edition of the FAB28 refrigerator, transforming it into a work of art. Each refrigerator features images by Sicilian artists: lemons, the trinacria symbol, cart wheels, medieval knights and battle scenes – all distinctive elements of the poetic marionette theater and the Sicilian Cart as well as important aspects of the aesthetic of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana. The themes developed for each product are embellished with classic floral motifs. These 100 exclusive refrigerators – the result of innovation and a meticulous eye for detail – are one-of-a-kind products that combine Smeg quality and technology and Dolce&Gabbana’s creativity and masterful artisan workmanship. dolcegabbana.com
JAEGER-LECOULTRE ATMOS 568 BY MARC NEWSON It is all lightness, transparency, and simplicity. At first glance, what draws the eye in Marc Newson’sAtmos 568 is its timekeeping mechanism, which appears to float freely in the air, while actually being held in place by the rear part of the movement. Its very simple dial is optimised for easy legibility. Although light passes right through the clear glass face, it is simple to read thanks to blue transferred Arabic numerals that always face outwards and are underscored by a minute circle. To avoid adding further elements, the marker indicating the month has been designed to form part of the transparent dial. The counterweights are painstakingly designed to melt from sight, while perfectly balancing the hands picked out in a harmonious echo of Marc Newson’s chosen blue. Uniquely for an Atmos, the entire cycle of moon phases is shown – with a white moon and a blue sky – on a very smoothly finished disc embellished with concentric striations. jaeger-lecoultre.com

A Thousand Words
Magnum photographer Steve McCurry’s book ‘Afghanistan’ is a retrospective about a country overwhelmed by tribal rivalries, colonial wars, and geo-political conflict. A country which the Afghans have always called ‘the land of rebellion’, and yet, born of such chaos, such entrenched conflict are these most breath-taking and beautiful of images.
S
teve McCurry was born in Philadelphia, PA, and has been one of the most iconic voices in contemporary photography for more than forty years, with scores of magazine and book covers, over a dozen books, and countless exhibitions around the world to his name. After numerous travels throughout India, the Middle East and Afghanistan, he founded ImagineAsia in 2004, with the mission to help provide educational resources and opportunities to children and young adults in Afghanistan.

Steve McCurry has travelled to Afghanistan regularly for more than 40 years. He is one of the most accomplished photographers to work in the region. His famous 1984 portrait Afghan Girl— sad and haunting, but at the same time evoking remarkable grace and dignity—published on the covers of magazines around the world is certainly his single most striking portrait. In common with so much of McCurry’s work, it has a timeless, painterly quality—entirely at odds with the battle-torn backdrop of the region in which it was taken.

Steve McCurry has travelled to Afghanistan regularly for more than 40 years.
Steve McCurry has always been subjected to the same dangers that are an inevitable part of life “on the road” for photographers. He has often ventured behind the lines, usually at great risk. His first assignment in Afghanistan in 1979 involved him dressing in Afghan robes in order to be smuggled across the border from Pakistan. That journey, into the treacherous, unpredictable landscape—territory controlled at various times by the Mujahideen, the Russians, and the Taliban—was one that McCurry would make many times. Many other photographers would follow in his footsteps, but none would return with such a flawless body of work. www.stevemccurry.com
