This particular issue was as exhausting as it was engaging, but hopefully our efforts will shine through as we have several prominent names in various fields gracing our pages. As the regulatory figure of football in the Kingdom, Bahrain Football Association (BFA) has managed to create one milestone after the other since its establishment. We talk to BFA President, Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa who shares his organisation’s plans for 2018 and future World Cup ambitions. We also have Mazin Khoury, CEO of American Express Middle East, which is celebrating its 40th year, to find out what the card giant has in store for its customers and merchants. Jean Nouvel speaks his mind with the same panache and uninhibition that has made him a legend in the architecture world, while Ismail Acar, Turkey’s most successful artist, gives us a peek into his creative process. These are

With its roots dating back to 1919, it’s no wonder that football is the Kingdom’s most popular sport today. Bahrain Football Association, which has been the local governing body of the sport since 1957, was founded with the objective of organising and providing sponsorship and direction to football teams, and has been instrumental in the development of the sport over the past few decades. In this exclusive interview, Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain Football Association, explains the organisation’s ambitious plans for 2018, the importance of developing young local talent, and Bahrain’s renewed interest in achieving World Cup glory.

Interview with Shaikh Ali bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, President of Bahrain Football Association What are your responsibilities as Bahrain Football Association (BFA) president? I think my responsibilities as BFA president are the same as in any national member association in the world. Bahrain comes under the Asian Football Confederation umbrella, which is part of the international body, FIFA. Asia is separated into five main zones. We belong to the West Zone, which is a 12-nation zone. My role is supervising the administration within BFA, helping the committee prioritise its goals and keeping it on track by working within the framework. At an operational level, one major function of the President is to facilitate effective committee meetings. I try to do as much as I can to raise the flag of Bahrain in all competitions, and, of course, work with the relevant ministries and government bodies to promote the sport as much as possible.

other areas to improve their technical abilities. Whenever possible, we like to bring in instructors from FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation to build up the talent of local coaches, which in turn, helps them to become better teachers for the kids. We also have a technical director for youth who helps us implement plans for the clubs to help in areas such as fitness and nutrition. Our Youth League, for ages 13 and below, is a very important area. In this age category, you don’t look at results, you look at participation because it’s about quantity rather than quality initially. From there, you can access the talented players and set them on the right path. One of the objectives for our four-year strategy is to improve the quality of youth competitions. We also hope to increase the revenue from sponsorship and channel those funds into areas of development for the kids.

What do you consider your greatest achievement in your role?

How does the Bahrain football scene compare to elsewhere in the GCC?

I don’t think there is one particular thing that comes to mind. My main objective is serving my country and, in order to do that, I must achieve quantitative results such as the output of work in the federation, and improving the way it functions. We have introduced many modern tools to improve the way we work and have invested in key areas that have helped us publicly show our results to the people of Bahrain. Many federations are assessed through two main elements: the accomplishments of the national team, and the quality of the competitions. BFA has done a lot with regard to our competitions in the last few years and although we have achieved a great deal, there is still more that needs to be done. We are on the verge of publishing our latest strategy, which outlines our objectives for the next three years. Part of that is preparation for the qualifying stages of all the competitions we are in.

Bahrain is a country of rough diamonds. The people are the true treasure of the Kingdom. Whether they play for fun or at a club level, there is world-class talent here – the problem is how that talent is nurtured as the players grow. If the clubs, the BFA, and the Ministry of Sport put our resources together, we can create the right environment to help this talent shine. The long-term aim is to help transform the clubs into professionalism by focusing on technical areas such as training and coaching, which will definitely improve our talent pool.

Are there any steps BFA is taking to encourage more young Bahrainis to take part in football at a professional level? Young people are the future of the sport and, right now, our focus is on developing their talent by teaching them the fundamentals. Most of this work is done at a club level and so it’s very important to make sure they have the right tools to help youngsters to grow. Recently, we’ve provided a number of courses to elevate the level of education for the coaches and we are targeting many

012-014 Up Close Sh. Ali.indd 14

Did you always feel a connection with football? I grew up playing football. It’s something I’ve always enjoyed. I used to play with my friends near the house when I was a child and I even played when I went to university in the US – left back. I think football teaches you a lot of things, including the value of teamwork and discipline. People can learn a lot of important life lessons from football, if they do things the right way. I come from a military background, so I see a lot of similarities between that and sports.

Outside of football, what are you passionate about, what are your hobbies and interests?

I like to do a lot of things, there’s not really one area that I focus on specifically. I enjoy fishing, diving, and reading. I also work in the IT field, which is very time consuming because every day there is something new to learn – I think it’s a very interesting area. Of course, I really enjoy sports and I manage to play a game or two with friends every week, it’s a great way to socialise and keep in shape.

Who can join BFA, what qualities does the association look for in candidates? Usually if you want to be involved, you need to have worked in football or sports first because it’s important to have the right background and experience. I started in the Cycling Federation in 2002 and was there for two years before a vacancy came up at BFA. Education is also very important, and I feel there should be stricter criteria so that anyone who comes adds value to the organisation. All of our current board members have Masters degrees and good football backgrounds. Another great thing about the current board is that we all come from different professions, which creates cohesion and helps us to achieve our goals.

What major developments do you see happening in the league or Bahrain’s football scene in general over the next few years? There will be more focus on the sport in the coming years and I think there is a very bright future ahead. His Highness Shaikh Nasser bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Supreme Council for Youth and Sports (SCYS) Chairman and Bahrain Olympic Committee (BOC) President, acknowledged recently that football hasn’t been supported enough, but that will change. He said that, starting from 2018, Bahrain will be focusing on football more than any other sport and trying to qualify for the 2022 World Cup. We are very proud and extremely happy to see Shaikh Nasser getting involved. We are looking forward to working hard to achieve our goals and making our leadership and the people of Bahrain proud. In the coming months we will create a strategy in line with this vision. bfa.bh

A Service Experience that makes a difference Celebrating its 40th year, American Express Middle East has grown to become one of the region’s most influential brands. Garnering a reputation as a provider of consistently reliable, convenient, and rewarding solutions, the MENA giant is only going from strength-to-strength. To find out what the company has in store for its customers and merchants, Durrah talks to Mazin Khoury, CEO of American Express Middle East, whose journey with AMEX Middle East started in 1989, and who was recently named by Forbes as one of the Middle East’s leading business executives.

Interview with Mazin Khoury, CEO of American Express Middle East In your opinion, what has been the most notable milestone in the 40-year history of AMEX Middle East? It’s rather difficult to summarise 40 years of AMEX Middle East regional operations in one notable milestone. We’ve made countless achievements since we issued our first card in the Middle East, and like building blocks, they have all contributed to the unique position we hold in the market today. We began with a clear goal to provide a service experience that makes a difference to thousands of people, every day, across the Middle East and North Africa. From there, we continued to build rewarding relationships with our Cardmembers, Merchants and Businesses by earning their trust, offering assurance, delivering control, great value and unforgettable experiences. And it’s true to say that like any business – especially one of our scale – we faced challenges, yet we found opportunities within these, motivated by a strong will to succeed and redefine the fundaments of Customer Servicing. And here we are today, 40 years later, still delivering on our commitment to make that difference.

016-018 Interview - Mazim AMEX D38 indd.indd 16

Can you share some figures with us about the status of AMEX Middle East today? How many employees does it currently have, how vast is its network, revenue growth, etc.?

01 Mazin Khoury

At American Express Middle East, we’ve come to establish ourselves as the leader in the premium segment and commercial payment solutions and we see our business continuing to grow in the foreseeable future. A great part of that is due to our unique business model – something we call the Closed Loop Network. By issuing cards, working directly with merchants, and being part of a global payment network, we maintain end-to-end control, building strong and trusted relationships with Cardmembers, Merchants and Businesses across 18 markets in MENA. Our success is also inextricably tied to our 500 talented and passionate employees across the MENA region, who come to work every day to make sure we’re delivering on our brand promise. And for 40 good years, we’ve made it a point to promote their professional growth so they can champion the relationships with our customers. That comes with us ensuring a wholly diverse

14/12/2017 09:18

01

and inclusive workplace that inspires change and growth and most importantly – it creates a sense of unity. For instance, over 30 nationalities are currently associated with our workforce and nearly 40% are females. It’s something we simply see as an extension of the service ethic.

What benefits did AMEX Middle East get by being headquartered in Bahrain? Are there advantages when compared to being based in other countries in the region? Bahrain has been AMEX Middle East’s pulse in the region since 1977 and we are proud to call it our home. Aside from its strategic geographic location and proximity to some of our key target markets, Bahrain has thrived as one of the Gulf’s financial centres for decades offering advanced regulatory framework, an abundance of educated, local, talented and bi-lingual resources as well as a relatively low-cost environment which make it an attractive platform for businesses engaging with the wider GCC and MENA region. That’s in addition to Bahrain’s advanced telecommunications infrastructure. As a payments card issuer, these factors

016-018 Interview - Mazim AMEX D38 indd.indd 17

are of profound importance to us not only because they catalyse Bahrain’s move to a cashless society, but they also enable new sectors such as Fintech and ecommerce – all of which will revolutionise the financial industry and open doors to countless opportunities. Combined with our very latest thinking in digital innovation and online payment systems, regional business insights and cultural understanding, Bahrain makes the perfect location for our regional headquarters.

How would you describe AMEX Middle East’s role in the development of the financial sectors in the region? What overall transformation or progress did AMEX Middle East’s presence enable? As mentioned earlier, our goal is to deliver a service experience that makes a difference to our customers. To do so, we ventured into a completely new way of thinking that wasn’t as popular 40 years ago in this region as it is today, which genuinely places the customer at the heart of operations. For instance, for our Cardmembers, we strive to make a difference by offering exceptional levels

of customer service, flexibility and convenience in the way they manage their accounts. We also embedded once in a lifetime experiences and travel into our services with access to our Membership Rewards programme, a world class loyalty programme that makes purchases all the more rewarding. It works by offering Cardmembers with points for using the American Express Card which can be redeemed for varying rewards from access to 12 airlines and 5-star hotels to gifts and shopping vouchers. And what makes the programme even more unique is that the points do not expire, allowing the Cardmembers to accumulate points and redeem them at their convenience for anything in the rewards catalogue. For our Merchants, we make a difference by connecting them to our high spending, exceptionally loyal and affluent Cardmembers, as well as shared marketing expertise. We also invest in expanding our network reach and building new partnerships from different sectors to create unique benefits, offerings and experiences that drive sales growth. For instance, some of our partners include MODA Mall, BLOM Bank and Dubai Mall along with many airline companies that are a part of our award-winning

14/12/2017 09:18

018

Up Close and Personal

Our success is also inextricably tied to our 500 talented and passionate employees across the MENA region Cardmember loyalty program. Lastly, we continuously explore business insights to identify growth opportunities and provide actionable recommendations to help drive business performance. For our Corporate customers, we make a difference by providing tailored solutions to help facilitate business payments with suppliers. We also help them deliver growth in the top-line and facilitate cash flow throughout their supply chain, and enhance the working capital and earn rewards on business purchases. Altogether, we’ve redefined the benefits of a payments card and changed the way people perceive them. We’ve also raised customers’ expectations with our unique customer relationship-building strategy that’s based on four elements: “Trust”, to support Cardmembers and help them shop confidently anywhere in the world; “Convenience”, to help streamline their life through quick, convenient and secure management of day to day finances; “Value”, to make their money go further with exceptional rewards; “Unique experiences” to enjoy more of the world and the things they love.

What has been the most successful service or feature that AMEX Middle East has provided in the region so far? This brings me back to the first question. Like summarising our 40 years journey in one notable milestone, summarising our successes in one service of feature is also quite difficult. For 40 years in the Middle East, we’ve combined American Express’ decades of global expertise and our understanding of the region to personalise and curate the perfect combination of benefits our customers would value. We’ve created an array of products and introduced a myriad of features that are far beyond what is expected from a regular payments card issuer. And today, we have a wide portfolio of Cards and services that we’re very proud of, all of which have achieved great success in their markets. Most recently, we’ve enriched the benefits of The Platinum Card® with a range of travel-focused benefits that give our Cardmembers that extra sense of security and peace of mind when they are away from home. For example, paying for those last-minute flights home or unexpected overnight hotel stay becomes hassle-free with Platinum Concierge Services available at any time of the day or night. We’ve also added annual travel vouchers as well as travel car rental insurance and comprehensive worldwide insurance policies for Cardmembers and their families. Altogether, the benefits help our Cardmembers make the most of life and reassure them that we’re genuinely here for them.

Technological advancements must have played a large role in the increasing numbers of credit card users. Has AMEX Middle East been actively investing in such

016-018 Interview - Mazim AMEX D38 indd.indd 18

technological breakthroughs or does it have plans to invest in future tech projects at some point? The shift in the modern consumers focus and associated priorities will always be a major focus for us, as is their use of new technologies and a continuous move towards a more digital and global lifestyle. Our ability to innovate and adapt to these changes, while continuously enhancing our product portfolio and customer experience is key. For instance, we’ve developed our online services and mobile application to offer Cardmembers quick, convenient and secure management of day to day finances, real time transaction details, the ability to redeem points and access offers. The app also offers selfservice for Card replacement, and PIN setup, should the Cardmember’s card gets lost or stolen. We support our customers and help them keep safe anytime, anywhere in the world. Our Corporate and Merchant partners also have access to advanced online portals and online Payment Gateway Solutions, providing them with a flexible and convenient way to manage their account and leverage new channels for sales growth. We’re driving technology and innovation throughout our closed loop model. This is part of our unique proposition.

Is AMEX Middle East active in supporting the local community? What Bahrain-based projects or initiatives has it been involved in over the years? A big part of American Express Middle East’s business is also about making a difference to the communities in which we operate, something we see as simply an extension of the service ethic that is at the heart of our business. We do so by actively engaging our employees in a wide range of volunteering schemes and regional good citizenship initiatives that aim at sustaining and developing the local community. For the second consecutive year, we have partnered with The Ritz Carlton Bahrain for The American Express Pink Party with a part of ticket proceeds donated to Think Pink Bahrain and Breast Cancer Society. And just in the second half of this year in Bahrain, we’ve supported Think Pink’s national initiative to break the world record for the longest pink ribbon, held a blood donation drive at our headquarters, hosted breast cancer awareness sessions for our employees and participated in The Bahrain Marathon Relay. That’s apart from many community-focused initiatives our offices across the region have supported and participated in.

If you had to pinpoint the biggest obstacle facing financial services in the Middle East today, what would it be? Despite the instability in global oil prices, I remain a strong believer in the Middle East’s economic forecast. Major sectors such as real estate and commercial air

travel continue to perform well, with an expected annual 5% growth in the number of airline passengers booking flights and travelling to and from the region according to a recent report released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). It’s also worth noting that our last Spending Habits survey conducted in January of this year has revealed some positive indicators about the region. For instance, Dubai continues to rank as the top luxury shopping destination for Middle East consumers, beating London, Paris and New York. And 71% of respondents from the six Middle Eastern countries that participated in the survey have revealed their plans to spend the same as or more than last year. Additionally, the highly successful development of new sectors such as Fintech, online retail, contactless payments and digital broadcast and entertainment will add new dimensions and depth to the economic portfolio of the region. Expo 2020 in Dubai will also help ensure that travel, tourism and leisure continues to be a principal driver.

Do you feel there are business areas that AMEX Middle East has not ventured into yet? What does AMEX Middle East plan to explore in the near future? The beauty of working within a truly dynamic and forward-looking organisation such as American Express Middle East is that there is always an opportunity to grow, and to learn something different every day by working with our Cardmembers, Merchants or Corporate partners who inspire us to do more every day. We also know that our world – the financial services world - is changing rapidly. Digital disruption – for example the rapid growth of mobile platforms and payment solutions – means that our Cardmembers are connected more than ever and their needs and requirements are changing almost on a daily basis. And it is innovation and new technologies, along with what we do best: providing exceptional customer service, trust, control, great value and delivering unforgettable experiences, that will drive us forward. There is no doubt that Fintech will continue to grow and develop – American Express Middle East is actively involved in this field, and there are a number of exciting new initiatives being developed as we speak. When it comes to contactless payments, mobile wallets and the like, these are exciting developments in the region, and as new regulated technologies are introduced, we will always want to be involved in their development and launch. Aesthetic Treasures

Nouvel’s choice of words is as memorable as his architectural creations. His insight is piercing, and he never shies away from calling it as he sees it. Born in Fumel, France in 1945, Nouvel enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, ranking first in the entrance examination of the Ecole Nationale SupÊrieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1966 and obtaining his degree in 1972. From there, he went on to carve out a reputation as one of the most widely recognized architects in the world, winning numerous prestigious French and International prizes and rewards. Durrah had the rare opportunity of interviewing Nouvel and learning the innerworkings of his mind.

Interview with Jean Nouvel Which one of your many projects would you say has been your proudest achievement so far? I am an architect of the context. I like the questions that are posed to the architects. To me, every question comes from a situation, and every situation is peculiar. My architecture is therefore every time a realization that takes into account the physical situations (soil, climate, urban and natural environment), and also the cultural and historical situations. When we bring a good architectural solution to the question that has been asked, it is always a great satisfaction. In this sense, the Louvre Abu Dhabi is a remarkable project.

Tell us a little about the Louvre Abu Dhabi. What does that project entail? The Louvre Abu Dhabi is an exceptional program in the literal sense of the name. I had the will to interact with the sky, water, sand, something that is between eternity and the moment, to create a spirituality of its own. We can make great architectural structures everywhere, but here, for the Louvre Abu Dhabi, the architecture was executed in a perfect way, to feel like I am the ultimate architect.

Your work does not conform to one style or ideology. What other factors do you consider when beginning a project? We accept a project starting from the moment we think we have the answer to the question. I often have the habit of saying that in architecture, we always begin not being competent of the environment, we never know

020-024 Masterpiece - Nouvel D38.indd 22

the situations, nor the people or the terrain, one must first become competent of the environment. Ideas come in relation to a peculiar situation, and all situations are peculiar. I believe only in situations, I believe only in the architecture of the situation. The situation is obviously the physical reality of the project: the location, the climate, it is also its historical, cultural and aesthetic environment, but foremost is the people, which must be met, which must be understood. We must always have the ambition of the question asked, we must go to the edges of an expression, an invention, create sensations, imagine a building that will fully testify to what our history was at that time, in this particular place. Architecture has to do its job. It is there to testify. In a sense, it is an edification in every moment of civilization, culture, technological advances, and technology.

Who would you credit as your inspiration and source of motivation to have a career in architecture? My hometown is called Sarlat, in the southwest of France. A medieval town. I lived there for a long time as a child, running through narrow alleys that were barely three meters wide. I regained my breath by leaning on the pillars. All these notions sensitized me to architecture. And then, above all, there was sometimes, in the detour of an alley, a kind of indication in the stone with an arrow that said: “There is the treasure” and when I asked: “but what is this treasure?” I was told that it was architecture. This inevitably left its mark on me. However, I did not want to be an architect, I wanted to be a plastic artist, painter, or sculptor. I did not know yet, but it was the art that interested me.

The problem was my parents. They both were teachers and for whom an artist’s life was too much of a risk. They were afraid that I would not be able to earn a living. So, I was forced to be cunning. I said that I would study fine arts not plastic arts in architecture, convinced that I could change my course in the following years. So, I started my studies in architecture, and I have never opted out of it. Also, I had the immense chance of meeting and working with Claude Parent and Paul Virilio. It was an incredible adventure, not only because they were two major figures, brilliant, visionary but also because it was a very special period. I was at Parent’s place in 1968. France was in the middle of the upheaval of May 1968. The school of fine Arts had taken a part of the street, there was nothing more related to the teaching of architecture. That’s how Claude Parent and Paul Virilio became my real teachers.

How would you describe the state of architecture today? Is it progress when compared to years’ past? Or are there aspects of it that you wish had never been ignored? What we need to change, urgently, is the way to make cities. It is absurd, it is dangerous, it is in light years of any humanist vision. The buildings are cloned, and are not adapted to the places or to the people. These

020-024 Masterpiece - Nouvel D38.indd 24

buildings have no roots. Everything is decided upstream, the square footage, the surface, the architects are too often condemned to make facade architecture, in the literal sense of the term to cover pre-determined “boxes”. We are very far from what architecture should be and what role it should play in the heart of any city. It is a very political issue and an ideological and pedagogical struggle to be conducted with political power. If I can convince the policy of this absolute urgency, I believe that the quality of life of many people would change. In today’s city, every architectural “object” is autistic, ignores its neighbour, develops in an anarchic way without harmonizing with its environment. It is a disease. In biology, I think we have a name for this. We call it a cancer.

Which One best defines the role of an architect: artist, or philosopher, or scientist? When one is, like me, a contextualistic architect, each project is subject to reaching in deep, each project is a testimony of an epoch. These are all the parameters that interest me, it is never a matter of scale, prestige or budget, it is always a matter of poetry. Architecture is an art, it is even the mother of the arts. jeannouvel.com

Turkish Inspiration Widely regarded as Turkey’s most successful artist, Ismail Acar is a painter who seamlessly blends modern technology with traditional techniques to create stunning compositions. His art covers a broad spectrum of themes, including Istanbul’s rich history, and the juxtaposition of Western ideas and Eastern spirituality. The impact of Acar’s work and his contributions to society cannot be overstated. The list of accolades to his name is almost as impressive as his artistic repertoire and in 2015 the UN appointed him as a humanitarian ambassador. He is also one of the founders of the Turkish Sled Federation, and a trustee of the Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey – an organisation that provides after school training and development programmes for children.

Interview with Ismail Acar How would you describe your artistic style? I mostly work using oil paints and canvas but sometimes I also use very old techniques, such as paper cutting. A lot of my work is based on the geography and culture of where I live and my native Turkey is a vast source of inspiration. It has a rich history, beautiful architecture, and many interesting characters – there is always something that catches my attention and makes think about how I could portray it though my work. I could be considered as a neorealist.

Do you believe that artists need a formal education, or can they succeed just as well without it? It goes without saying that education in general is very important, but it means nothing without passion, dedication, hard work, and commitment to your craft. You

026-028 Masterpiece - Acae - D38.indd 27

don’t necessarily need to be formally educated to be an artist, but it is a useful guide and gives you an idea about life and the world. It’s always a good idea to have a firm understanding of whatever you’re working on, especially when your subject is historical or cultural.

Who was your earliest influence as an artist? Someone whose works you’ve seen and inspired you to enter the world of art? Rembrandt has always been a big influence of mine because he was ahead of his time in so many ways. His art tackled a variety of different themes and spanned several styles; he was also very hard working. I am fascinated by ancient settled cultures and architecture in general, so I have a lot of respect for the artists of the Renaissance, especially the Ancient Greek and Roman Period. Another one of my biggest influences is Ergin Inan.

You were named “the most successful artist in Turkey” at one point. What does success mean to you? Being named the most successful artist was obviously a flattering accolade, but I think success is a very relative subject that can be expressed as a lifelong process for any artist. Honestly, I’m just doing my job and being myself. I am extremely fortunate that I get to do what I love, so in that respect, yes, I am successful.

On average, how much time do you spend on each painting? And are there particular tools or methods you prefer to use? 02

01 100x100cm 2014 rumi oil on canvas 02 City 90x90cm 1999 oil on canvas 03 Portrait of Ismail Acar 04 Mosque 150x150cm oil on canvas 2009

It depends entirely on the painting – I use several different techniques and applications. There are some that take one day to complete from start to finish and there are others I have been working on for six years. For example, there are hundreds of thousands of houses in an Istanbul panorama, so it takes a lot of time. I consider myself as somewhat of a perfectionist, so if I see something I don’t like in my work I discard it and start from scratch.

Is there a country where you would love to exhibit your work in the future? Yes, I want to have some new exhibitions at museums and galleries in the US in coming years. America is such a large market and it has a fantastic art scene, it’s always a place that stands out for me. I have exhibited there before and had a very good response so I look forward to going back in the not too distant future.

What are some of the common mistakes that you find new artists to make? What advice would you give them?

As an artist, have you ever found a theme or concept that you wanted to tackle but thought it would be too daring or outrageous? Are you a risk taker when creating?

New artists tend to expect results very quickly and this is simply not realistic. To get your work recognised and appreciated you have to work very hard and, more importantly, be very patient. Things take time and nothing happens overnight, you have to persevere and accept that things will sometimes not work out in your favour. If you are dedicated and extremely hardworking, success will come eventually.

Absolutely, I love to take risks when I create. I think sometimes the purpose of art is to elicit emotion

ismailacar.com

03

026-028 Masterpiece - Acae - D38.indd 28

and to encourage debate – it’s a great platform for addressing difficult themes and concepts. I never accept failure so if I start something I always endeavour to finish it, regardless of how long it takes or the reaction it might get. Sometimes the most daring work can become a best seller.

Timeless Appeal Patek Philippe has always aimed for perfection by creating timepieces of unrivalled quality and reliability that exude uniqueness and exclusivity. In the hands of the Stern family since 1932, it is the last independent watchmaker in Geneva and maintains a proud tradition of innovation. In this exclusive interview, the company’s President, Thierry Stern, discusses his vision for the future of the brand, his affinity for its expansive repertoire, and the latest industry trends.

Interview Thierry Stern, President, Patek Philippe

030-032 UCP - Interview - Patek Phillipe D38.indd 31

You once said that minute repeaters are your favourite complication. What makes them so special to you?

Do you think being a family business has made a difference to Patek Philippe’s history? What advantages did it bring?

It’s the combination between simplicity and skill. On one hand, it’s an easy to understand sound, but on the other hand, there is a great amount of technical expertise that goes into making it. You don’t need to be a watchmaker to know if the sound is good or bad, and that’s what I love about it. The right sound for a minute repeater can’t be achieved using machines. It’s only achieved through the fine craftsmanship of an expert watchmaker. From a professional standpoint, it’s a fascinating achievement, but for a client, it’s just a pleasure to listen to. Every time I hear one, it not only sounds beautiful to my ears, but it also reminds me of my family because I grew up listening to them with my father and grandfather.

The beauty of being a family business is that you get to choose a strategy you believe is right for the brand and not just for the shareholders. My family has always strived to make the finest watches in the world and this is possible because we control the company 100%. Ever since I started working at Patek Philippe, my focus has been on how I can make my watches more beautiful, not how I can increase dividends. I strongly believe that by being independent, you’re able to build an effective, clear, and stable longterm strategy. Right now, I’m working on movements for 2033 and I know I will be able to do it because I’m not going to change my strategy, I have no shareholders telling me that I have to make watches just to be successful or to cater to current trends.

How would you describe your background growing up? Was watchmaking a prominent part? I grew up in the business. One of my earliest memories was when I was six years old. I vividly remember opening a drawer in my father’s office and seeing the first Myerson pieces in there. I wasn’t allowed to touch them. I could only look, but that was more than enough to get me interested. They were so beautiful!

Is it true that the watch world is facing some challenges? Can you tell us what these challenges are and how Patek Philippe is planning to overcome them? The watchmaking industry has always been filled with challenges. This is nothing new. It goes without saying that you need to innovate to survive, and we pride ourselves on our new designs and complications. We place great emphasis on our network of well-trained employees and ensuring that we have stylish and comfortable stores for people to visit and enjoy our

030-032 UCP - Interview - Patek Phillipe D38.indd 32

products. People are at the heart of what we do, so we maintain high levels of customer service. Patek Philippe is the only brand today that still repairs all the watches that it has produced since 1839. This service doesn’t exist in any other brand. For us, repairing a watch that’s 100 years old and restoring it to its former glory is common.

What are the latest trends? Do they differ vastly between men’s watches and women’s watches? Times are surely changing. Women’s watches are starting to evolve with a lot of different complications, which was not the case before. I find this very interesting. Our movements are very difficult to realise, but the fact that we strive to make them smaller allows us to make beautiful, complicated pieces for ladies that fit on their wrists. The chrono seems to be particularly popular at the moment. For men, they just expect us to bring them something new. If I ask what style they would like to see, the answer is always the same: “we trust Patek

03

Philippe, whatever you bring out, we’re sure it will be good”.

What does the future have in store for Patek Philippe? Are there new areas you’re planning to explore? We have around 80 people working in R&D to help us plan our watches for the future to determine what we should do and how we are going to do it. The most challenging part is adapting what you dream about and making it a reality. Sometimes, you know exactly how it’s going to work but just don’t have the technology to build it because it’s too small or complicated. I think, in the future, we will need new ideas and new materials that could allow us to take what’s written on paper and turn it into a real watch. Every year, we have new prototypes, but I’m not willing to release a totally new design every year just for the sake of some gimmick. If I release a watch, it must add something worthwhile to the brand. patek.com

Ulysse Nardin is renowned by experts and connoisseurs alike for its sophisticated selection of high-end timepieces. The Swiss watch-maker, founded in Locle in 1846, has a rich history of innovation that is destined to continue with a new man at the helm. Patrick Pruniaux, Ulysse Nardin’s new CEO talks about his extensive background in the watch industry, the latest offerings from the brand, and his hopes for the future of this horology icon.

Time for Innovation Interview with Patrick Pruniaux, CEO, Ulysse Nardin Watches seem to be a big part of your life. What is it that makes the watch industry so appealing? The watch industry has always fascinated me because it evolves a lot, and I believe it will continue to do as we move into 2018 and beyond. Over the years, I have been involved with a number of watch brands, including TAG Heuer, where I held different posts for nine years– the most notable of which was Vice-President of Global Sales and Retail. I left TAG Heuer to join Apple where I helped launch the Apple Watch. I see the same level of passion at Ulysse Nardin that I saw at Apple, the same willingness to be bold and to make decisions in the interests of the consumer.

034-036 Up Close Ulysse Nardin.indd 34

During your career, you oversaw the launch of several high-profile tech products. Do you have plans to introduce more tech aspects to Ulysse Nardin’s watches? There are already several technical aspects to Ulysse Nardin watches, but I don’t have any plans to launch a smartwatch. I believe we offer a great deal of innovation with our mechanical products while still staying true to the brand’s rich history. In fact, in some instances, we are bringing back core features, which are sometimes forgotten by watchmakers. Many brands seem to concentrate on making new complications that don’t really add value to the product or benefit the end-consumer, whereas we have continued to introduce iconic timepieces full of wonderful ingenuity

and extraordinary technical achievement. Part of this achievement comes from the company’s determination to master every aspect of the craft in-house.

What plans do you have to set Ulysse Nardin apart from the competition? Is it difficult to further improve such an established brand? The watch industry is very competitive, but I think there is an opportunity to make the brand stand out. Ulysse Nardin has very strong values and a rich history that spans over more than 170 years, which already sets us apart from competitors. It’s our duty as a team to continue the amazing path of the brand and accelerate it even further. Our products are very distinctive and

immediately recognisable in terms of design and innovation. In January of this year, we introduced a new concept timepiece, the Ulysse Nardin InnoVision 2, which comes 10 years after the original InnoVision. Both of these feature innovations that we have already implemented or could be implementing into production models in the future. It’s just one example of the ways we build on our history while moving towards the future.

What are some of the challenges you have faced in your new role as CEO so far? I expected to face the same challenges as anyone joining a new company, but I’ve felt totally at ease and comfortable from the very beginning. There is a great deal of spirit and passion at Ulysse Nardin so I feel a strong desire to perform well. Everyone at the company is committed to the brand and heavily invested in helping it achieve continued success, which makes all the difference. With such a dedicated team, I’m very confident about the future.

Are you a fan of tradition or do you look for innovation when it comes to watchmaking?

Tradition is important for a number of reasons, especially since it gives you a wonderful platform to build on. At the same time, you must be willing to embrace the contemporary in order to adapt to the challenges of the future. People who buy Ulysse Nardin watches expect innovation and contemporary designs but also certain novelties that stem from the watchmaking knowledge the company has acquired over its illustrious 170-year history. I think that having a balance between tradition and innovation is what sets the brand apart from other watchmakers.

How would you describe the general outlook towards watches today? Is the watchmaking world 02 stronger than it’s been before or is it going through some difficulties? The last few years have been difficult for the watchmaking industry, but things seem to have picked up during 2017. I think the beauty of a brand like Ulysse Nardin is that it performs well regardless of the state of the industry because our customers are connoisseurs and experts who value quality and innovation. I believe that the company deserves to be more widely known and I’d like to see that happen,

but I’m always amazed by the knowledge and passion of those who do know and love the brand.

Are there any new collections or masterpieces we should expect next from Ulysse Nardin? I’m excited to announce we have a lot of things coming up in January. I’m very optimistic about the new Freak, which we will be presenting at Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie de Genève (SIHH). Our lineup of Freak watches is truly unique because it has an avant-garde design, which does away with crown, hands, and dial. We debuted our first Freak back in 2001 and it was innovative even back then because of its Dual Direct Escapement mechanism, which made anchors, escapement wheels, and lubrication unnecessary by transferring energy directly to the balance wheel by two non-magnetic silicum drive wheels. It was even further improved in 2007 with silicium escapement parts coated in a diamond film similar to pure diamond. I think people will be amazed at our latest offering, which is very modern yet still remains true to our heritage. ulysse-nardin.com

Durrah has an in-depth interview with Audemars Piguet’s Chairwoman of the Board, Jasmine Audemars, and Vice Chairman of the Board, Olivier Audemars who discuss the fascinating history of this iconic Swiss brand and the future of the family business.

Ticking Along in Style Interview with Chairwoman of the Board Jasmine Audemars Do you feel women have taken their rightful place in the business world today or is there still more to be done? There are more women working in the watch industry than ever before. Things have changed a lot and they’re still changing, which is certainly a positive step in the right direction. However, I feel like there is still more to be done.

What challenges must businesswomen overcome today to be seen as equals to businessmen? There are many challenges for women to overcome when it comes to equality in the workplace. I think businesswomen need to project confidence and work very hard. My advice is to be passionate about your work. Be patient and the time will come.

Do you think having Audemars Piguet as

038-042 Interview Audemars D38.indd 38

a family-run business made a difference on the paths it took during its history? Would it have been different today if it wasn’t a family business? If it were a public business, things would probably be different. The main strength of being a family business is having the ability to look at things with a long-term view and being able to make decisions with the future in mind. Obviously, I feel an added sense of obligation to ensure the company does well, because my family has worked very hard for many years to build the business. I think that added level of dedication has made a big difference.

It seems there will be troubling global economic times ahead. Do you believe governments should help private businesses cope during such crises or should businesses be able to survive on their own?

13/12/2017 13:45

I think businesses have to survive on their own. At the end of the day, government help comes from citizens’ money and I just don’t think it’s fair to take it for a private business. You have to hope for the best and plan for the worst and whatever happens, happens. By having an effective business strategy in place and responding to challenges as they present themselves, you stand a better chance of weathering the storm.

What advice do you wish you were given when you first ventured into the watchmaking business?

01

038-042 Interview Audemars D38.indd 39

I was born into the watch business and learned a great deal from my grandfather and father. From a young age, my family instilled a strong work ethic and always reminded me that I have to work hard and look at things with long-term view in mind. I still apply that advice today and it has served me well over the years.

As a brand, have Audemars Piguet’s values changed over the years? Is it a different brand now so it can accommodate the tastes of today or has it always remained unchanged? Our company’s founders wanted to make complicated watch mechanisms that depended on the skill of expert craftsmen, that’s why they decided to found Audemars Piguet and their vision lives on today. In the 1970’s, the development of the Quartz watch had a significant impact on the Swiss watch industry. This is when we decided to launch the Royal Oak, which was contentious and pushed the boundaries of what people expected, but it was a huge success. To this day, we continuously look for new ways to innovate while maintaining our proud traditions.

Which aspect of watchmaking do you feel drawn towards most, the art or the science? I appreciate both in equal measure. Artisans and art in general are very similar and we try to bridge the gap between them with our watches. We want to create watches with technical, intricately designed mechanisms that evoke emotion when they are worn on people’s wrists.

What is your most personal prized possession from Audemars Piguet? I would say It’s the watch that I inherited from my grandfather. It has huge sentimental value to me for a number of reasons. It is the one he built to become a certified master watchmaker. It’s beautiful in every way. The sound, the craftsmanship, and the attention to fine detail. I love it.

04

Which collection or timepiece has grown to be the definitive Audemars Piguet, one that encompasses its DNA? We make a number of beautiful watches that are made to be worn everyday. We don’t want them to end up in a safe. We want them to evoke emotion from the wearer. Our Royal Oak line is a good example of our DNA. With its steel case, octagonal bezel, tapisserie dial and integrated bracelet, it overturned prevailing codes in 1972 and took its rightful place as a true modern icon.

What should we expect next from Audemars Piguet? Is there a new masterpiece to be announced soon? I am involved with a lot of R&D for products that will come out within the next five to eight years. I can confidently assure you that there will be some amazing things to come, but you’ll have to wait for now. audemarspiguet.com

Interview Alexander Schmiedt, Brand Director, Middle East What do you think of Jewellery Arabia this year? Jewellery Arabia is always a great opportunity to let our end clients experience the true spirit of Vacheron Constantin. We always bring unique products and new experiences. This year, we not only revealed a special edition for the Middle East, but we also brought one of our expert watchmakers. We felt like he was the most important person for clients and potential clients to meet because he is the best at demonstrating the passion that goes into our creations.

What was the inspiration for creating the overseas models? The collection has been designed with our clients in mind. They are cosmopolitan. They live life the way they want to. Whether they are in an office, on a plane, or at the beach, they look for a watch that follows the rhythm of life and is a style accessory. The Overseas collection conveys the spirit of travel in all its rich diversity and has been designed with casual elegance and practicality. These watches were not just made to tell the time, they are companions that adapt to your style of life and the way you want to live it.

How would you describe the Vacheron Constantin wearer? What type of personality does the brand attract? They are true connoisseurs who appreciate the exclusivity and quality the brand is known for. They understand what goes into making these watches and appreciate them like works of art. Many of them are experts in their own right. They want something rare, with technical excellence and an ultimate level of elegance. Even in a hundred years, these pieces will be as timeless as they are today, and our discerning customers know that.

044-045 Interview - Vacheron D38 indd.indd 45

Vacheron Constantin’s history goes back over 262 years. Do you feel it has remained the same or did it have to change with the times? Having such a rich heritage is extremely important because it not only allows us to understand the past, it helps us to innovate in ways that very few others can. When I first came to the Middle East, I heard a saying, something along the lines of ‘those who don’t understand the past can’t understand the present, and won’t know where to go in the future. That is very fitting with our spirit. We are proudly rooted in tradition but constantly reinvent ourselves as we look to the future.

Is it difficult to secure the best watchmakers in the world today? How tough is the competition for skilled craftsmanship? It is definitely tough to find good people, but I think because of our rich history and strong reputation, we have a competitive advantage. For really passionate watchmakers, we offer an environment that very few others can. In Geneva, we have a restoration facility where we employ 25 watchmakers who study and repair watches from the past. Only the very best craftsmen in the world get to work there, so if you make it to this department, you can learn a tremendous amount from the history of watchmaking.

What have you found to be the most challenging aspect of your role as a brand director so far? The best way to ignite the spark of Vacheron Constantin in people is to bring them to the manufacturing facility in Geneva. The moment they see how we create our timepieces with passion, tradition and innovation, they instantly become ambassadors for the brand. not everyone can make it to our facility,, so we’re trying to

bring the spirit of the brand to the hearts of people in the Middle East. I think with the right ambassadors and a strong, passionate team we are in a good position to do that.

Do you have a favourite watch from Vacheron and what do you like most about it? If I had to choose one, it would be the American 1921. I love it for so many reasons but mostly because it has such a great history. It was inspired by a piece from the 1920s that was made for the American market. At the time, cars were just becoming popular and the client wanted a watch he could see precisely without taking his hands off the steering wheel. That’s why the dial and the crown are placed slightly to the side.

What are the latest trends in the watch world and which direction are watchmakers taking? Every brand has to take its own direction while staying true to its values and the authenticity of its roots. What I’ve noticed is that, despite the fact that there is so much new tech coming up and innovation cycles are becoming faster, many people still appreciate things that last, things with a human touch – which is something we pride ourselves on.

How do you see the watch market evolving in the Middle East in the next few years? I can’t say how it will evolve exactly but I can tell you that it has huge potential. Vacheron always works with a long-term strategy in mind and we’re here to develop this market for the long run. Over the course of the brand’s history there have been a lot of ups and downs, especially in terms of the economy, but we always try to keep doing what we do best by keeping true to our motto ‘Do better if possible, and that is always possible’. vacheron-constantin.com

Al Zain Jewellers has taken exquisite craftsmanship to a new level with its latest creation ‘Cascade of Dreams’, which was revealed during the recent Jewellery Arabia exhibition. Laced with 1,970 Bahraini pearls, eight rare Colombian emeralds, and a staggering 12,826 diamonds, this stunning piece has drawn acclaim from the most discerning customers. Durrah talks with Theo Swart, CEO of Al Zain, about inspiration behind the stunning piece, the latest trends shaping the luxury market, and the benefits of being a home-grown company in Bahrain.

has been x-rayed by DANAT (Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones) proving its authenticity and exceptional quality. This is an inspirational piece that evokes dreams, and the reaction we’ve had so far has been spectacular. Many people have come to have their picture taken with it and a few very discerning customers have asked to see the piece in private.

Cascade of Dreams is the first offering from your new Dream collection. Can you tell us more about the rest of the collection and what we can expect from it? I think you should look at it as a series of novels. It’s a bit like when you read the first book and you’re so captivated by it that you can’t wait for the author to launch the next in the series. This is precisely what Al Zain will do. Obviously, we’ve set the bar very high for ourselves, so the second chapter will follow at the next Jewellery Arabia or thereabouts – the plan is to launch them as close to these events as possible.

What are the latest trends in the jewellery world right now? It depends which sector of the market you look at. From a design point of view, Jewellery Arabia was dominated by diamonds and there is still a high demand for wedding sets. There is a move towards more “novelty or character based” designs where animals play a big role in designs. On the fashion side we see and experience a demand for everyday items in a modern design yet underpinned by tradition. Diamonds sales remain strong, so we’ve launched quite a few diamond sets, but we’ve also launched pieces that combine diamonds with emeralds and rubies. There is still a strong trend for solitaires and tennis bracelets too.

04

Interview with Theo Swart, CEO of Al Zain This is your 25th year at Jewellery Arabia. Does it get more challenging to present something bigger and better each year? Not really. It’s a market so we as retailers and manufacturers must keep pace with our customers’ needs. By paying attention to their needs, wants, and requirements in the lead up to the show, we give ourselves a lot of time to prepare and develop new ideas. There has been a marked change in the economic climate, and consumers are now looking for more valuedriven products of different sizes, so we have shifted our designs accordingly.

How would you describe the current state of the jewellery market in the GCC region? If you compare this year’s show to last year’s, Al Zain experienced a small amount of growth. However, if you look at the big picture, overall spending has been notably compressed. This doesn’t mean that consumers have stopped spending. They have just become a lot more discerning. Their needs remain the same however they have become a lot more discerning. People want to get the most value for their money. Of course, there are still the Niche market consumer who do not wish

046-048 UCP - Zain D38.indd 48

to compromise, instead they’ve become a lot more discreet with their spending, so we tend to serve them in a private setting. Their requirements haven’t really changed. They know what they want and they come prepared. Their expectation is of a higher level of quality as opposed to reduced prices.

Tell us a little bit about the Cascade of Dreams. Is this the biggest creation from Al Zain yet? How much work went into making it? Cascade of Dreams is absolutely our biggest creation to date, and a lot of work went into making it in time for Jewellery Arabia. We wanted to make something truly unique and we have definitely succeeded with this piece. Over 2500 man-hours went into making it, with over 100 expert craftsmen from different departments working tirelessly. Every single part of the necklace has been handcrafted, so it’s a very lengthy process. Al Zain is known for design and quality craftsmanship, and we really wanted to showcase some key values and traditions of Al Zain to our customers. Firstly, we wanted to be true to our strong design heritage, and Secondly, we wanted to demonstrate our extreme attention to detail and quality finishing. For example, every pearl in this exquisite piece

There are plenty of jewellery brands available to customers in Bahrain. What would you say is Al Zain’s secret to keeping its customers despite the competition? Al Zain is a family business that’s now in its third generation. We are repositioning the brand to cater to the children of the generations that we are serving, while still respecting our heritage and past. It’s a well-known fact that we are master creators and craftsmen. Al Zain’s uncompromising attention to quality is something we hold very dear. Our customers trust us to give them a fair price, a fantastic selection, and to make their dreams come true in the way we create our products for them.

Are there benefits or advantages for jewellers being based in Bahrain? There are advantages for any jewelers being based in their home country, regardless of where that is. If you’re talking about home-grown brands such as Al Zain, we certainly have an advantage over international brands because people have known us here for generations. Al Zain is known throughout the Middle East, not only in Bahrain. We are embarking on several new concepts in 2017 and throughout 2018 that will re-establish Al Zain as the preferred jeweler of Bahrain. Watch this space! alzainjewellery.com

Luxury Statements The best and latest from the world of watchmaking for the man of today.

Bulgari Octo Maserati These prestigious timepieces bring together the very finest design elements from two of Italy’s most iconic brands – Bulgari and Maserati. The two new Octo Maserati watch models – GranSport and GranLusso – were officially presented at the Frankfurt motor show and have quickly drawn acclaim for their subtle yet sophisticated sense of style. The new models embody the companies’ shared mechanics of excellence. Firmly focused on exclusivity, they feature retrograde minutes and jumping hours displays, expressed through an aesthetic evoking the style codes of Maserati cars. The colours, materials and fonts on both watches subtly nod to the automotive marque. The dial design evokes images of car dashboard and counters, along with a topstitched leather strap reminiscent of automobile upholstery. The GranSport version comes in black DLCtreated carbon. The dial is black, while the indications – numerals, hour-markers, counters – and the hands are silver-toned and blue. Meanwhile, the GranLusso comes in 18kt pink gold. While its dial is also black, the entire set of hands and indications are in pink gold – a precious and refined touch from Bulgari. bulgari.com

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Aventador S The Excalibur Aventador S by Roger Dubuis and Lamborghini Squadra Corse is a racy timepiece that blends Italian aesthetics and performance with Swiss precision. The renowned watchmaker’s technical specialists drew inspiration from the Lamborghini spirit to create this collection, which embodies their natural affinities. The Excalibur Aventador S now hits the track as the first horological expression of this high-speed partnership. The Excalibur Aventador S is available in two options that epitomise the “dare to be rare” concept through respective 88- and eight-piece limited editions. The former bears the Lamborghini “Giallo Orion” yellow paint code picked up in a number of design features, while the even more exclusive series comes in “Arancio Argos”. When making these stunning watches, the design teams from both companies merged their expertise to create something truly unique. The result is two models that combine noble and high-tech materials while still ensuring top-rate performance. These include multi-layered carbon and C-SMC carbon based on the same technology as that used for Lamborghini cars – a world premiere use of this material featured in the orange-liveried eight-piece limited edition. rogerdubuis.com

Panerai Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic Panerai has set a new benchmark for quality with its latest offering – the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic. It is available in two new versions that showcase the brand’s trademark identity and purity of design. The 45mm diameter case comes in titanium, with a blue dial and alligator strap or in stainless steel with an anthracite dial and a brown alligator strap. Compared to the Luminor 1950 model of the same size, both these two new creations are significantly thinner and lighter. This is because of the structure of the calibre and the work of the designers, which has enabled the thickness of the case to be reduced by almost 40 per cent (10.7mm), while preserving the watch’s sturdiness and functionality. In perfect Panerai style, the dial of the new Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic has the sandwich structure, satiné soleil finish and minimalist design, with figures at the cardinal points, bar hour markers, and the small seconds counter at 9 o’clock. The water-resistance of the two models is guaranteed to three bar (a depth of about 30 metres). panerai.com

Glashütte Original PanoMaticLunar Classy, unique, and replete with character, the PanoMaticLunar watch for men unites rich midnight blue and cool stainless steel in powerful harmony that makes an immediate statement. The team at Glashütte Original’s in-house dial manufactory in Pforzheim, Germany, went to great lengths to attain the perfect shade of blue for the timepiece’s dial. The desired hue can only be achieved through attentive monitoring of the galvanisation and 40 precisely defined steps in the manufacturing. The experts also worked diligently to craft the graceful shape of the moon phase display at 2 o’clock, with its silvery moon and stars set against a silver night sky. The asymmetrically designed dial is not only stylish, it allowed the Saxon manufactory to make room for two distinctive complications: the refined, elaborately worked moon phase, and the Glashütte Original Panorama Date. glashuette-original.com

Ulysse Nardin Marine Tourbillon Blue Grand Feu The rare beauty of a blue Grand Feu enamel dial gives an elegant flourish to this splendid new timepiece from Ulysse Nardin’s Marine Collection. Since 1846, when a young Ulysse Nardin conceived of the first marine deck chronometers, the seafaring world has been an essential part of the brand’s history. In fact, the early timepieces can be seen as precursors of more recent Ulysse Nardin Marine watches, like the Marine Tourbillon with its unusual blue enamel dial. This distinctive timepiece unites the three fundamentals essential to Ulysse Nardin’s identity – in-house production, technical avant-garde, and rare artistry. The self-winding UN-128 calibre is produced in-house in the workshops at Le Locle, Switzerland. Embodying the brand’s development and continued independence in the manufacture of its movements, it harnesses the properties of silicium technology, with a 60-hour power reserve and a flying tourbillon. Complementing the elegance of the Grand Feu blue enamel dial, are the elegant hands and roman numerals indicative of the Marine collection. ulysse-nardin.com

IWC Schaffhausen Da Vinci Automatic Elegance and sophistication come together seamlessly in the Da Vinci Automatic. With its round case and distinctive horns, this beautiful timepiece draws directly on the iconic design of the 1980s Da Vinci models for inspiration. Designed for both women and men, the distinguished timepiece is available either with a slate-coloured dial and stainless-steel bracelet or with a silverplated dial and black alligator leather strap. The clear-cut dial design with the date at “6 o’clock” sets off the striking Arabic numerals and lancet-shaped leaf hands. The crown discreetly takes up the contours of the case and blends harmoniously into the overall picture. Both models are water-resistant to three bar and powered by the tried-and-tested 35111 calibre with automatic winding and 42-hour power reserve. iwc.com

Carl F. Bucherer atravi TravelTec Black Frequent flyers and busy professionals know all too well the challenge of balancing and adjusting to different time zones. The Patravi TravelTec by Carl F. Bucherer is an ingenious solution that blends comfort, functionality, readability, and technological sophistication. Its waferthin, diamond-like crystalline carbon structure ensures the watch is scratch-resistant and highly shock absorbent and the deep matt black colour is created with a unique blend of carbon material. The striking design is rounded off with a black dial offering a clear display of contrasting lightcoloured totalisators, indices, and, scales. The intelligent interplay between the case and movement enables this timepiece to display three time zones simultaneously. Two time zones are visible on the dial thanks to the sophisticated functions of the own chronometer-certified CFB 1901.1 calibre. The third time zone is displayed via a red 24 hour-hand on a rotating bezel and the patented monopusher enables the wearer to quickly and easily set it to an eastern or western direction of travel. carl-f-bucherer.com

Jaquet Droz Petite Heure Minute Collection Mother nature and her natural wonders are the inspiration for the exquisite timepieces in this stylish new collection. Creatures from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia – the lion, the flamingo, and the koi carp – are Jaquet Droz’s guests of honour on three timepieces that bring together the very best of its artisans’ mastery. These new versions of the Petite Heure Minute were brought to life in La Chaux de Fonds, the cradle of the brand, and combine miniature painting and black Grand Feu enamel to awaken the desire to travel to new horizons. The Grand Feu enamel has been worked to create a deep, uniform black version. The only background capable of enhancing the painter’s precise and infinitely thin brushstrokes, the dense and magnetic enamel gives each ornamental motif its impression of depth. jaquet-droz.com

Panerai Luminor 1950 Submersible Made to the highest specifications for the most discerning buyers, the new Panerai Submersible watches are solid, strong, and provide great visibility even at great depths. Their distinctive design draws inspiration from the brand’s rich history and pairs it with the latest technical innovations. These innovations are apparent in the cases for the timepieces, which are with a selection of materials, including traditional choices such as titanium and AISI 316L stainless steel; precious materials such as red gold; and more evocative options such as BMG-TechTM – a metallic glass known for its resistance to external shocks and corrosion. All the new Panerai Luminor 1950 Submersible watches use the P.9010 automatic calibre, with a power reserve of three days. The movement has the date, the classic small seconds counter at 9 o’clock, the mechanism for stopping the balance wheel, and the device for changing the time by moving the hour hand backwards or forwards in jumps of one hour without interfering with the running of the watch. panerai.com

Bvlgari Lvcea Mosaique This quintessentially Italian luxury marque pays tribute to ancient Rome with its newest Lvcea Mosaique watches. Mosaics, a decorative art typical of the period, serve as inspiration for the dials of these new creations, which are composed of tiles made of gold rather than stone. The 18kt gold plate is first cut into around 700 tiny square tiles measuring precisely 0.84mm. Each of them is then individually placed on the dial plate, starting from the centre and progressively radiating towards the outer sides. It avoids any misplaced light effects that might appear in the tiny gaps between the specks of gold dust. The stunning result creates an infinite variety of subtly shimmering light effects. Rather than composing a specific pattern on the surface of the tiling, the goal is to obtain the best possible reflection. One by one, the gold squares are placed in such a way that the overall gold mosaic tile is not uniformly flat. Tiny shifts in position, together with slants barely perceptible to the naked eye, combine to achieve a result that could be described as the art of imbalance. bulgari.com

Louis Moinet Stardance This innovative and complex offering is the world’s only timepiece that sparkles with the brilliance of diamonds from outer space. Stardance features a spectacular moon phase created from a finely-crafted fragment of the Enstatite EH3 meteorite. This rare piece of space rock boasts scintillating nano-diamonds believed to have been formed in cosmic collisions that occurred billions of years ago, pre-dating the formation of our solar system. Surrounded by an aventurine night sky, the fragment of meteorite represents the moon, making this horological complication especially dazzling. It is not only the nanodiamonds of the meteorite moon phase that dazzle. The white ceramic bezel is distinguished by an inner ring of 54 VVS Top Wesselton diamonds interspersed with six cabochon-cut sapphires. The case is made of hightech, grade five polished titanium and the design of the automatic winding rotor provides a stylish continuation of the day-night theme. The central disc is decorated with a new moon surrounded by the golden rays of the sun adorning the rotor. louismoinet.com

Piaget Gala Collection Piaget’s Gala collection takes artistry and beauty to another level. Precious gold and diamonds have been transformed into stunning pieces that complement the beauty and diversity of women. The craftsmanship, attention to detail, and striking lines that characterise Piaget’s collections caught the eye of acclaimed Lebanese designer Nathalie Trad, who used pieces from the collection as an inspiration for some of the bags in her new line. With its sensual curves and precious gem-setting, the Limelight Gala watch was an icon born in the 1970s when the Maison took glamour to new heights with its audacious creations. Somewhere between jewellery and watchmaking, an exclusively gold-clad version, introduced in 2016, pairs the watch with one of Piaget’s signature goldsmithing techniques – a finely woven Milanese mesh strap in pink gold. The ‘palace’ décor, with its shimmering mesh-like texture, gives the outside surface of the bracelet an iridescent effect. With this uniquely Piaget technique, watchmaking and jewellery are seamlessly fused into a luminous combination. piaget.com

Amadeo Fleurier Monsieur Bovet Bovet reaffirms its unique identity with this classic, functional, and timeless timepiece, which provides variety and sophistication in abundance. With its seven-day power reserve and perfectly balanced presentation of features, it heralds the future of the Fleurier Complications collection. Inside its Amadeo convertible case, the Monsieur Bovet houses a rare in-house movement, the Virtuoso II calibre. The first calibre to be developed by Bovet that’s not regulated by a tourbillon, this manufacture movement has been engineered to display hours, minutes, and seconds on both the front and back of the timepiece. One face displays the intricacy and unique architecture of the movement, allowing the wearer to view the elegance of the Virtuoso II calibre. The second face has a lacquered dial that covers the entire surface, leaving just enough space for the seconds carriage, which offers a glimpse of its precise mechanical choreography.

Surrealist Scents

Dali Haute Parfumerie is a unique collection of five perfumes inspired by the jewellery creations of Salvador Dali. Crafted in the finest perfumery tradition and interpreted by a master perfumer, this scintillating selection of fragrances continues the story of the world’s greatest surrealist. Jean-Pierre Grivory, President and DirectorGeneral of Cofinluxe, explains the impact of the artist’s work and the importance of staying true to his spirit while creating this new line.

Interview with Jean-Pierre Grivory, President and CEO” of Cofinluxe How long has this collection been in the making? Was it a difficult process considering the jewellery and painstaking attention to detail? Not really because in the Dali universe, it is very easy to find the inspiration you’re looking for. His creativity and spirit are involved in everything we do, from the design of the bottles to the fragrances themselves. We took inspiration from Dali’s jewellery collection and chose five jewels as a foundation on which to create interpretation. The complicated part was creating a jewel that was different to the original but still maintained the spirit of this iconic artist.

062-064 UCP - Dali D38.indd 63

Who will fall in love with Dali Haute Parfumerie? Is it strictly for Dalinian fans? Certainly not. In fact, I think it will actually inspire more people to become fans of his work. His exhibitions attract an eclectic mix of people from many nationalities and of various ages. I think part of the reason, that nearly 30 years after his death, people are still fascinated by him is because he had his own view on everything. This collection is an interpretation of his art in the form of a perfume, and our bottles are a strong indication of the connection. I don’t think you have to be a Dali fan to appreciate our fragrances, but you might just become one.

Dali’s art was surreal, his work containing bizarre and striking elements that were distinguished when compared to other artists. Can a perfume be considered surreal enough to stand out in similar fashion? Or are all perfumes surreal because of their olfactory nature? When I started working on this collection, I visited a lot of flea markets and was surprised by how many empty bottles were being sold. At first, I was shocked but then I suddenly realised that the bottles had value in themselves and told a story. As a result, all of our perfume bottles have a story behind them because

they are based on the art and lifestyle of Salvador Dali. When it came to their design, I had to think of shapes and elements from his art that I could make ‘bottleable’ so when a consumer buys one of our perfumes, they’re actually buying a reproduction of his art.

One of Dali’s hallmarks was the extensive use of melting watches in symbolic function. Are there scents in the perfumery world that can produce the same effects? Can you symbolise with scents, just like Dali symbolized with visuals? A great perfume appeals to three senses, sight, touch, and smell. Sight is very important because people are attracted to the bottle first, which makes them feel like touching it and then finally smelling it. A great perfume evokes an emotional response – you either like it or you don’t – and the same is true with any work of art. People’s responses are definitely subjective but that’s the beauty of art.

Alberto Morillas is the master perfumer interpreting Dali’s collection. How was the experience of working with Morillas? It was great. He is extremely talented and very few people can boast as successful a career as him. He has been responsible for creating some of the world’s most iconic aromas and the Dali Haute Parfumerie is no exception. I met him for the first time more than 30 years ago when we worked on the first Dali fragrance and, from that moment, I knew we shared the same sensitivity and desire to create something special. When you’ve worked with someone before you have a rapport, which makes the process easier and more enjoyable.

In your view, what do the perfume and art worlds have most in common? I think they have a great deal in common because the creative process of a perfumer is the same as any artist. When it comes to painting, for example, artists only have a few basic colours to work with, but perfumers have a much broader palette. There are so many fragrances

in nature, as well as synthetic chemicals, which gives the perfumer infinite combinations to explore. As in all creative domains, passion is the main ingredient and there is a huge sense of satisfaction when you turn your ideas into reality.

What are your hopes for Dali Haute Parfumerie? If Dali had been alive today, what do you think his response would be to the new line? I’m very fortunate and I’ll always be extremely thankful to Dali for believing in my ideas. I feel a huge sense of responsibility to produce fragrances that are in line with his image. Dali approved our past products and liked what we did so I am trying to respect the same creative process with this line. I cannot say what he would think, but we have tried to be sincere and worked hard to create something as close to his art as possible. To be consistent with Dali, we needed to take a visionary approach, and that’s what we’ve tried to do with this collection. dalihauteparfumerie.com

CALVIN KLEIN OBSESSED The sensuality of the original OBSESSION is mirrored in this reimagining through a black vanilla infusion, structured with dark, dimensional, woody notes. As the re-invention of an iconic fragrance, OBSESSED plays on the evocation of memory through scent. Mixing memory and desire, the past and the present, this compelling fragrance echoes the original OBSESSION, yet blurs and reformulates the scent. When it comes to the design of the bottle, packaging, and the scent itself, there is a strong sense of going backwards to go forward. This is a reimagining that takes the best of an iconic fragrance and combines it with a fresh perspective. calvinklein.com

GUERLAIN LE FRENCHY Le Frenchy was dreamed up by Thierry Wasser, Guerlain’s master perfumer. With its woody, aromatic and citrusy essence, it reflects the dynamic, spirited, and elegant personality of its creator. Refreshed with a lively and piquant hint of lemon, verbena and petit grain, it swells into an aromatic heart constructed around sage, precious neroli, and fragrant lavender. Slowly, the composition’s base sparks into a flame with the subtle blend of vetiver, tonka bean and ambergris. Le Frenchy belongs to Guerlain’s Exclusive Collections, a range of fragrances for aficionados who admire raw scents and refinement. guerlain.com

MOLTON BROWN RUSSIAN LEATHER This distinctive new fragrance is an olfactive impression of the bygone Russian leather-making craft, practised only by a few remote villages perched on forest edges. Siberian pine oil mingles with aged leather accord, smoky black tea and deep tobacco uplifted by elemi, vetiver and spicy purple basil to create this distinctive fragrance. Composed with enigmatic, powerful overtones, the eau de toilette and bath and shower gel combine to create a compelling fragrance layering ritual for long, intriguing nights. moltonbrown.com

CHLOÉ ABSOLU DE PARFUM This iconic line is celebrating its tenth anniversary in style with a new fragrance – Chloé Absolu de Parfum. Its irresistible essence intensifies the signature Chloé fragrance and will appeal to new and old fans alike. Although this new scent’s rich, woody, textured floral fragrance is recognisable as the Eau de Parfum Chloé; it is a more refined version. The heightened intensity and depth of the Damascena rose is combined with an absolute of Centifolia rose from Grasse. Vanilla absolute unfurls and a touch of patchouli adds character, making this fragrance more captivating than ever. The sleek bottle, with a metal plaque in a new shade, frames the light amber colour of the Absolu de Parfum and the silver plating takes on a cool golden undertone. chloe.com

GUERLAIN LUI This unisex fragrance is a twist on tradition that blurs the lines between feminine and masculine. Its unmistakable, universal scent is based on benzoin; a versatile ingredient with numerous facets. Then benzoin takes on a more intense dimension, pulsating over leathery base notes with smoky and woody accents. Vanilla and white musk round things off to give this scent a comfortable and supple sensuality. guerlain.com

Scoping Innovators The new bolt action rifle from London gun maker James Purdey & Sons brings a level of accuracy not previously found in ‘London’s best guns.’. This is due to a titanium chassis running from the pistol grip through to the fore end which supports a free-floating barrel. The new rifle is finished with traditional Purdey excellence, and is available in a wide range of chamberings and with a choice of sights.

A

t the heart of this new and highly innovative rifle is the ‘Purdey Chassis System’. Made from titanium, the chassis, running from the pistol grip to the forend, is embedded into the walnut stock. Unseen when the rifle is assembled, the action is built directly into the titanium chassis rather than into the wood, as is traditional with London’s best rifles. The result is an exceptionally stable bedding platform, one of the keys to an accurate rifle. The ‘Purdey Chassis System’ runs the full length of the stock and gives a level of stability unseen in Best Quality rifles in the past. As a result, the stock is prevented from moving as atmospheric conditions and moisture levels change. This major advance has allowed Purdey to incorporate a free-floating barrel

086-087 SF Purdy D38.indd 87

into the design, allowing consistent barrel harmonics, another key prerequisite to rifle accuracy. Historically, London’s highest quality rifles were all built around old Mauser actions using German barrels. The new Purdey Bolt-Action Rifle is an all-British product. The double square-bridge controlled-feed action and barrel are both precision engineered in the UK and the rifles are made in Purdey’s London workshop. This new rifle is truly a a high quality London rifle. Whilst the new rifle is full of innovation, the tradition and elegance of Purdey was at the forefront of the design brief. The ‘Purdey Chassis System’ is hidden from view when the rifle is assembled, so aesthetically it remains a very traditional product with the London

blueing to the action and barrel, along with the walnut stock and the traditional fine rose and scroll engraving. The rifle is delivered complete with swingoff mounts and scope rings and is threaded for a moderator if the customer wishes, complete with an invisible thread protector. The action is fitted with a Timney trigger, which is set from the factory at 2 1/2 lbs, is adjustable, and delivers a crisp break with no creep. The new Purdey Bolt-Action Rifle is available in all standard and most wildcat chamberings. Purdey has over 200 reamers available to meet the demands of the modern bolt-action rifle market. purdey.com

The COS Autumn/Winter 2017 collection takes a hefty dose of inspiration from architecture to create a look that is defined by clean lines and textbook tailoring. Understated yet elegant, this line is made up of rich textures, geometric drapes, and a bold industrial palette which adds character while emphasising the minimalistic feel that the brand is known for.

Elegantly Nuanced I n this refreshingly simple yet bold and timeless range, the brand’s signature chic minimalism takes centre stage. At the heart of the collection, technical materials blend with bold silhouettes to form a magnificent homage to experimental art and design. Replete with fine details such as sharp pleats and exaggerated lapels, the sleek pieces are exquisitely tailored with elegant finishes. The collection has many highlights, including a softly tailored wool blend blazer in burgundy, which can be paired with high-waisted, wide-leg, wool blend trousers, also in burgundy. Team

The Marc Jacobs Spring 2018 collection is extravagant, boldly patterned, brightly coloured, and certain to make a long-lasting impression. n this collection, abstract exaggerated prints and patterns are realised in fabrics of various weights: a melange of nylons, silk, synthetic satins, jerseys, and twills. The urban and sporty pieces are as eclectic as the designer himself. Oversized coats, blazers, sweaters and ponchos feature prominently and come in loud colours, pinstripes, and plaids. When it comes to accessories, the Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2018 collection has a practical yet creative variety. The sassy selection of footwear comprises flip-flops, boots, and flat sandals, which stand out with gemstones, tassels, and pom-pom accents. Bonpoint’s Winter 2O17 collection is a tribute to the most precious treasures of childhood, fun, and happiness. This whimsical line is inspired by the work and musings of Charles Eames, who urged – among other things – that we “take our pleasure seriously”.

Parisian Flare C aptivating Parisian flare and a meticulous attention to detail are just some of the many elements that make this collection stand out. Inspired by the 1950s, this new line explores how playing and working are linked. Apron dresses or pleated suspender skirts are worn with patent leather Mary-Jane’s or derbies. Trompe-l’oeil sweaters, smocked dresses, plaid kilts, and black leather jackets play with fun and colours. In this collection, motif-adorned accessories and leopard-print blouses captivate and delight in equal measure. The brand’s signature cherry appears in

Printed silk playsuits and puff-sleeved knits are joined by empire-line dresses adorned with Bonpoint’s subtle frills at necks and cuffs. Embellished Fair Isle knits in complementary tones are teamed lightly with tulle skirts to create an oldworld charm, and a palette of light mossy green and whisper-pale ecru are enlivened by splashes of stormy grey or coral. bonpoint.com

he renowned company was born by chance after its founder, Peter Bellerby, struggled to find a birthday gift for his father. The idea was to buy a globe, but every option he found was either too costly or too generic, so he took it upon himself to create his own. The process took two years, more than 100 attempts, and was fraught with difficulties. He had to license a map from a reputable source with the correct world capitals, write the programme needed to morph a rectangular map into gores – the triangular shapes that fit onto a sphere – make a sphere, balance the weight, and finally apply the map. By the time he was finally finished, he became so enamoured with the process that he decided to found the company.

The work of artist Tariq Sharif stands in a visual league of its own. The British-Bahraini owner of Arkham Creative uses a special technique that involves creating handmade, multi-layered artwork using only blades and paper to produce his diverse creations. Perhaps it’s the familiarity and vividness of the characters within his art, which range from children’s portraits to pop culture icons, that add such a distinctive element to its overall qualities. You can sense the attachment between the artist and the art, as Sharif is a self-professed comic book fan. His diverse creations have earned him a place in the hearts of fans from around the world. He talks with Durrah about his creative process, artistic background, and the significant role his fascination with superheroes plays in his work.

02 The creative behind the unique art, Tariq Haji Sharif

Interview with Tariq Sharif Do you have a formal background in art or is it more of a passion for you? I don’t have any formal background in art, but what I do have is a love for looking at something and wondering how it was made and if I could make it better. My creativity comes from my parents; my dad had a passion for carpentry and my mum was always creating and experimenting with arts and crafts. I’m very fortunate to be able to do something I enjoy and each creation is definitely a labour of love.

Can you describe your process in detail? What do you need to start a new piece and how does it evolve? The process involves taking four or seven pieces of coloured paper and arranging them in a manner that creates the best outcome for an image. Each piece is then cut by hand using a surgical blade and the unwanted areas are removed. The layers are then placed on top of each other to form the desired image. It is a time consuming and extremely intricate process to say the least, but I always work with the big picture in mind. All the time an effort is worth it when I know I’ve created something unique that people will treasure.

108-112 Masterpiece - Arkham - D38.indd 108

How do you determine if a portrait or picture is worth creating? What qualities do you need to have in that picture before you proceed to recreate it in your own style? Art has a different meaning and value to each of us. Should I create a picture of a mother and child, capturing that special moment between them, would only mean something to them. I therefore create portraits that touch the heart or capture the human spirit. My portraits of loved ones adorn many walls of family homes all around the world. I am blessed to have the opportunity to create such sentimental art pieces.

Did you invent this technique of using only blades and paper or are you borrowing from other artists and their methods? I thought I did invent the technique, I honestly thought I did. I originally wanted to print a flash green colour with a matt black finish for a project I was working on. After a long extensive process of trial and error, my younger brother got so annoyed with my obsession, he uttered the

immortal words “Yalla, just cut it out, I’m sick of hearing this, I’m ordering food”. The idea struck me, so I did. I just cut out what I needed and it worked, then we ordered food. The method has been around for a while, but only practiced by a handful of artists around the world. Each of us has a different approach and viewpoint. I have spoken to a few of these creative individuals and we all support each other with developmental insight.

What made you so infatuated with superheroes? And are there characters you’re still hoping to create in your artistic style? As any child will tell you, being a superhero is the best feeling in the world. When I was younger I used read a lot of comics and watch a lot of TV, even the 80’s Arabic Ragul Al Hadidi TV show. I really admire art that depicts a story in just one pose, whether it’s Batman standing defiantly, or the Joker just grinning. I love seeing heroes win and overcome such drastic odds, it evokes a reaction in me. Now that I’m a father of a nine-month-old baby boy (Aaron), my wife and I get to play real superheroes, that don’t sleep and watch over him.

Who are your favourite artists or works of art that you draw inspiration from? There are lots of artists that I admire, from Stan Lee, to Frank Miller, Steve Ditko, Kevin Eastman, and Mark Bagley. But I would have to say that I hold a very special place in my heart for the legendary Bahraini artist Abdulla Al-Muharraqi and his sons, Khalid and Faisal. They have played a massive role in my development over the years and for that I am extremely grateful.

You have created numerous pieces with your style. Can you share some of the clients that have you approached you for commissions? They range from the royal families of Bahrain and the UAE to celebrities such as Kristen Stewart, Ellen, Louise Redknapp, Sir Patrick Stewart, Anthony Mackie, Eva Longoria, and the list keeps getting longer. I am very, very proud to announce that two major hotels in the UAE – The Address Hotel and the Rove City Center – gave me the opportunity to create the royal portraits for their respective lobbies, I am honoured that my artwork is now currently displayed for all who visit.

03 04

Any ambitious projects that Arkham Creative is planning on tackling next? Of course, I’m always out to push limits. I’m looking to break a world record, support more charities, and to continue creating joy with each piece of art I create. Donating my work to be auctioned off for charity is something that makes me immensely proud and I’m really happy that I can make a small difference and support some really worthwhile causes around the world. Delivering the Goods Carriage is a platform that aims to provide the best food delivery service in the GCC. With the advantage of adding a logistical element to its platform, 01 restaurants are not only relieved of a major challenge, but can also ensure that their customers receive their orders in the fastest time possible. Abdulla Al Mutawa, Founder of Carriage, tells Durrah about the motivation behind creating the new platform and the success that it has received upon launch.

Up Close and Personal

Interview with Abdulla Al Mutawa, Founder of Carriage How did the concept of Carriage come about? Was it an individual effort on your part or were there other parties involved from the beginning? Before we launched Carriage, I had opened a restaurant in Kuwait City called The Stack. It mostly sold burgers. When I wanted to have food delivered from The Stack, I realized what a hassle it was. This is in addition to the commission from the delivery platform I was on, the assets that were bought, the workers that were hired. All of that made the delivery process very costly. It was then that I got the idea of a food delivery platform that also had a logistics component. It would free restaurants from the hassle and allow them to be profitable. So, I sat down with my now co-founders Khaled Al-Qabandi, Musab Al-Mutawa, and Jonathan Lau, and we created Carriage.

Carriage is considered by some as a competitor to Talabat. Now with both of them acquired by Delivery Hero, does that change things? Is there a fear that Carriage may be viewed as the secondary food app by Delivery Hero? Nothing has changed as we are different in a lot of ways. Carriage has a completely different business model than any other online platform in Bahrain. We offer an integrated service where we not only provide the platform that customers can order from, but we also take care of the logistics from the restaurants side. We have exclusive, high-end restaurants and a

well-trained fleet, which ensures we have the fastest possible deliveries in Bahrain.

Carriage’s main competitive advantage is the addition of logistical solutions to restaurants who may not have delivery. After this huge success, did you find competitors following your business model? Or has Carriage been exclusive in offering that so far? After we had launched, and Carriage became a success, we had noticed that some companies are now trying to do something similar to Carriage’s system. But, as mentioned before, what we have at the moment is entirely different than any other online platform.

Do you feel that being established in Kuwait had an influence on securing the startup capital for Carriage? Did it make it easier to secure investment? In my opinion, the market in Kuwait and the GCC is mature enough that it’s not much of a struggle to secure investment, even for a startup. It was never seen as a major issue.

Is there a particular country that had the biggest response to Carriage in terms of customers or sales? Thankfully, we have had an amazing response in every country that we have launched in. In some countries, customers were anticipating the launch of our service

months before we had actually started offering our service. This is a testament to the excellent service that we provide, and the reputation that we have gained in those countries where we operate.

Are there plans to expand outside of the GCC? While we can’t share any specific details at the moment, we are always looking to grow and ensure the biggest customer base possible is able to take advantage of our service. So, if the opportunity presents itself, then of course we would. We would never say no.

In your opinion, what kind of skills do you need to create a successful startup? Does having a formal education play a role? Not necessarily. I studied Civil Engineering, which is an entirely different field than what I’m doing right now. It’s not exactly a gene that’s inherited, but rather serious commitment from the person’s side. If an idea is genuinely good, and you believe it is destined for success, then you need to keep trying to succeed. Bumps are going to happen regardless. Everyone faces huge challenges, whether from bureaucratic or legal aspects, but success is determined by how the entrepreneur tries to overcome these hurdles and turn that idea into a reality. he abundance of museums in Abu Dhabi is only matched by the variety of the items they have on display. The Louvre Abu Dhabi, located on Saadiyat Island, offers visitors the chance to explore art from various cultures spanning the entirety of human existence through its 23 galleries. It also features four temporary exhibitions per year in co-operation with museums in France, and a children’s museum which has an Arabic and English language workshop where children can learn art techniques and ideas. Lovers of heritage and cultural tourism are bound to have a great time at the Heritage Village, which takes visitors back in time to show them how people lived in the desert, complete with tents and campfires in a recreation of the experience displayed at the museum.

The village even hosts workshops for some of the skills that were necessary at that time such as pottery, basket weaving, and metalwork, as well as a number of handicrafts stores where visitors can buy handmade soaps and spices. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the largest mosque in the UAE, and has bilingual guided tours several times a day for visitors. For a more immersive experience, the Arabian Nights Village offers visitors the chance to stay in tents, palm tree houses, or other traditional accommodations to truly get the feel what it was like to live in the desert, without the trappings of modern day technology. While in the village, visitors can go on camel riding expeditions, or take on the dunes on their own riding quad-bikes, or let a trained professional take them on a dune bashing experience and surf down the sheer inclines of the dunes.

Outside the village, there are still many places where people can rent four wheel drive vehicles and take on the dunes themselves, and rent camping equipment to adventure on their own or with a guide through the Empty Quarter, the world’s largest continuous sand desert. Car enthusiasts would not want to miss the chance to visit Al Ain Classic Car Museum which collects and maintains a selection of vehicles and books related to the history of cars in the UAE. There’s also the Emirates National Auto Museum which displays nearly 200 vehicles belonging to His Highness Shaikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan. This collection includes off-road vehicles , classic American cars, a range of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, and the world’s largest truck. No auto experience in Abu Dhabi would be complete without Ferrari World. Jamavar, London Jamavar, a Mayfair restaurant specialising in regional Indian cuisine, has been awarded its first Michelin star within a year of opening. In such a short period of time the exquisite eatery has grown from strength to strength and builds on the legacy of the Nair family, who operate the Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts – a group of luxury hotels with properties throughout India. Dinesh Nair, his daughter, Samyukta, and Executive Chef Rohit Ghai, founded this culinary jewel in December 2016. It was born from a love of sub-continental dishes, as well as recipes passed down from the matriarch of the Nair family and namesake of the hotel chain; Leela Nair. Jamavar London is the first outpost outside of India, and brings the essence of the palaces to Mayfair with an effusive design, offset with colonial flourishes and patterns of Jamavar shawls, and hand cut marquetry. With rainforest and brown emperador marbles, dark timber panelling and gilded lincrusta wall coverings, the main dining room on the ground

floor is offset with brass accents and a sculpted bar made up of Indian print block patterns and Lutyensinspired furniture. Downstairs there is a further dining room, with navy leather upholstery and silvered oak accents, that draws on the ancient games of India with Chaturanga dining tables and decorative Indian Ganjifa artwork adorning the walls as well as a mirror embellished bar front. Executive Chef Rohit Ghai has created an eclectic menu, which includes dishes such as Malabar Prawns, sautéed king prawns, white turmeric, onions and curry leaves; Kid Goat Shami Kebab, black cardamom, mint chutney and chur chur paratha; Tulsi Chicken Tikka, sweet basil, pickled radish and raita; Dum Nalli Biryani, Hampshire lamb, basmati rice, crispy onions and fresh mint and Port Poached Pear, pear samosa, chocolate and pink peppercorn kulf. jamavarrestaurants.com

Le Louis XV-Alain Ducasse à l’Hôtel de Paris A unique culinary experience inspired by the French Riviera awaits you at the recently revamped Le Louis XV-Alain Ducasse à l’Hôtel de Paris. The menu is as varied as it is exquisite and there is a strong focus on authenticity and fresh, high-quality ingredients. Created by chef Dominique Lory and Alain Ducasse the menu asserts itself with contemporaneousness and youth. Vigorous jus, intense broths, and fresh condiments, it reveals the exactitude and precision of taste. Some emblematic recipes of Louis XV are still à la carte, and new signature dishes have been added. Regional authenticity and essential Riviera flavours express themselves without compromise in the cuisine of this establishment. The humble chickpea finds its place, as does the Roquebrune-Cap-Martin maquis myrtle. However, the chef, hailing from the southwest of France, sources his lamb from the Pyrenees and his poultry from the Landes. The wide selection of decadent desserts round off any meal in style. Prepared by pastry Sandro Micheli, offerings include rhubarb with foamy cottage cheese and spring honey is a masterpiece of roundness and smoothness. His creations always come as a perfectly mastered surprise and this is achieved through the use of unexpected

152-157 Dining D38.indd 156

ingredients such as raspberry vinegar or Sarawak pepper. It’s not just the food that makes a lasting impression. In collaboration with Gérard Margeon, Noël Bajor, head sommelier, created a wine list imbued with the immense wealth of one of the most robust cellars in the world and the most beautiful regional products of the Riviera. The interior is bold and dynamic. In the dining room, the service ballet articulates around a piece called the “Office”. This is a bold decision, as it stages gestures normally hidden from guests, right in plan sight. A large chandelier made from 700 pieces of hand placed glass stands out and gives a aura of sophistication while the furniture adds a sense of levity and lightness through the use of wood, light leather, chrome, and polished stainless steel. Each element, including the tableware and cutlery, has been carefully chosen. From the marble butter dish with neat and sharp shapes that evokes the Principality of Monaco’s Rock; to a delicate brass piece, placed in front of each guest to hold the botanical bread leaves, no small detail is overlooked at this unforgettable eatery. alain-ducasse.com/en/restaurant/le-louis-xv-–-alainducasse

Remza Investment group F&B culinary director & Meisei’s executive chef Michael Sang-Kyu Lee is a culinary wizard known for his fusion of flavours and passion for creativity. With a hefty helping of international experience under his apron, he has been delighting diners in Bahrain with his award-winning recipes since the restaurant’s launch in 2013. He talks exclusively with Durrah about his influences, the importance of presentation, and which country he thinks has the world’s best cuisine.

Besides the taste, food must look good, and one way to ensure that it does that is to consider the colour scheme, which is very much like fashion design

Interview with Chef Michael Sang-Kyu Lee When did you realize that you were destined to be in the culinary arts?

In your opinion, which city or country is the one that understands food the best?

I have no idea! I’ve just always had a passion for food. In fact, when I was growing up, I actually wanted to be a fashion designer & a fireman. You might think that there’s a big difference between the culinary arts and fashion, but they are similar in many ways. In both disciplines, presentation is important. There’s an old saying that people eat with their eyes first and I believe it’s true to certain extent. Sensory & visual is of importance, and one way to ensure that it does is to consider the colour scheme, which is very much like fashion design.

I’m not sure if there is one specific place or city. Each country’s cuisine has its own merits. A lot of my inspiration comes from street food, particularly from South Korea. I remember walking around night market as a child with my parents and enjoying array of traditional Korean food – This is where the purist flavours come from. I don’t think it matters which country or city, the best food is always your mother’s home cooking.

How would you describe your cuisine? Foremost, it is modern Japanese, but I combine different elements to make it more unique. There are several different styles I like to incorporate such as South Korean, regional Chinese like Szechwan and Cantonese, but the interesting twist is my passion for Italian cuisine. I love southern Italian fare because of its lighter flavours and notes. I intricately marry fresh herbs & spices & array of imported seafood & meats, sometimes it works, other times it doesn’t but that’s the beauty of the creative process. There’s a lot of research and development.

160-164 Bon Appetit D38.indd 161

Do you have a favourite dish or cuisine that you never get tired of? I love Asian and Italian cuisine; there is such a rich contrast between the two. However, the way that Italians and Asians eat is actually very similar – the meals are typically made up of lots of different courses. I’m not picky, I’ll happily try something new because I think that’s a great way to discover new flavours and broaden your palate.

What would be your recommendations to a first-time patron at Meisei? You have to know and understand your clientele before you make a recommendation, some diners are vegetarian, vegan, pescatarian or have food allergies and that makes a difference. My passion is using the highest

quality ingredients to create a variety of dishes that appeal to different palates and tastes. I think letting my guests decide what they want is the best option and they certainly have many choices on the menu at Meisei.

What was the best compliment you’ve ever received for your food? I’m not sure if there is one compliment that stands out, but I’m always content when someone who has never experienced modern Japanese cuisine & leaves the restaurant with a smile on their face. To fulfill a dining experience for guests is challenging but it’s my desire to exceed their anticipations.

What advice would you give someone who wants to become a chef? Being passionate is the most important thing. Honestly, get as much experience as you can in other ethnic restaurants, never stop learning new techniques and procedures, and taste everything – it’s the only way to refine your palate. Keep your head down, ears open, and do not lose focus of the fact that you’re working to learn a craft that takes a lifetime to master. meiseirestaurants.com

Up Close and Personal

Chopard Ambassador and WEC driver, Timo Bernhard is known for his dynamic racing style and his impressive track record. He talks exclusively with Durrah about his favourite Chopard timepieces, biggest inspirations, and what success means to him.

Racing Ahead

Interview with Timo Bernhard

What do you like the most about Chopard watches? I really like their overall look. They’re absolutely beautiful. I’m particularly fond of the 919 edition because it has a lot of racing engagement. For example, its dial echoes various details of the Porsche 919 Hybrid and the black and red touches perfectly match the hybrid race car. You can clearly see the link to racing with its numbers, design, and precision. It’s something that transfers very well to my job as a racing driver!

Do you remember your first ever watch? In Germany, when you’re around six years old, you have to go from kindergarten to school. I remember my mom bought me a watch just to know when school starts. I don’t remember the brand, but it was a typical kids’ watch and I remember it was red. I think you can safely say that my Chopard watch is a huge improvement!

How busy is the life of an LMP1 driver? Is there something you wish you had the time for? It’s definitely busy but, to be honest, I don’t regret anything because it’s a key programme of my career. For me, the main thing is wishing I could spend more time with my two boys at home. But I’m really lucky because they cheer me on and they follow every race, so whenever I come home, we have a lot to talk about. It’s great that they can understand what I’m doing and I really hope I can make them proud.

You recently lead Porsche to their third straight win at Le Mans 24 Hours, which is a record achievement, and their 19th win at the race, making them the most successful manufacturer in its history. Would you say you’re at the top of your game now or are you still hungry for more? It was a dream come true to win Le Mans this year with Porsche. It gives me a great sense of pride and it’s something I’ll remember for the rest of my life. I’m always hungry for more success. I guess I was born like that. I think it comes from having a competitive nature, which is an essential personality trait when you’re a racing driver. If you become complacent, you lose your edge and that is not something you want to happen to you in this field.

01 Chopard Ambassador and WEC driver, Timo Bernhard 02 Timo Bernhard’s car no.2 03 Superfast Chrono Porsche 919 Edition 04 Winners’ podium 05 Porsche LMP team in action

You were the youngest driver to win the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland. Who do you believe should get the credit for the discovery of your skills at such a young age? I think all the credit has to go to my parents, especially my father because he always believed in me. If he didn’t think I was good enough or that I simply didn’t have the potential to succeed, he would’ve stopped me very early on when I first started go-karting. He is very enthusiastic about motorsport and, even at the age of 66, he’s still involved in it – at a lower level – but he loves driving race cars. The environment around me definitely played a big role in shaping who I am and what I have achieved. I’ve been very fortunate that my family supports what I do – without that kind of support there is no way you can be successful.

What has been the most thrilling racing experience of your life? Best race car or best track? The craziest races of my life were at the 24 Hours Nürburgring. The 20.8km-long Nordschleife, which Sir Jackie Stewart famously called the ‘Green Hell’, to this day remains the most daunting circuit anywhere in the world and I won there five times. The most thrilling racing experience for me was probably Le Mans with the Porsche 918 hybrid. The circuit is unique in the sense that there are combinations of normal roads and closed race tracks – you won’t find anything else like it in the world! When it comes to my all-time favourite Porsche on the track, I’d have to say it’s either the 918 Hybrid or the RS Spyder.

168-171 Up Close - Chopard D38.indd 170

How much training is required to be an LMP 1 driver? Has it been a difficult journey to get there? If you want to be good at anything in life, you have to work very hard and practice – LMP 1 is no different. You need to put in countless hours to be successful and, most importantly, you have to realise you’re never done learning new things. I had a strong feeling that things were building up in my career when I jumped into the LMP 1. When you first drive these cars, you suddenly realise that everything you’ve learnt so far in your career was preparing you for the experience. You need to combine everything you know for this type of category and for these types of cars.

02

Is there a racing hero you’ve admired when you were growing up? Alain Prost was always a hero of mine and we even have the same birthday – February 24. From 1987 until 2001 he held the record for most Grand Prix victories and that’s a massive achievement. Stefan Bellof is another driver that I admire greatly. He was a Porsche factory driver who was on his way to Formula 1 but he died in 1985. He was best known for setting the fastest lap ever on the Nordschleife configuration at the Nürburgring in 1983, driving a Porsche 956. If he had survived there is no telling what he could have gone on to achieve.

What advice would you give to youngsters who want to be in your shoes one day? Stay hungry, productive, and never give up! chopard.com

Rolls-Royce Phantom

R

olls-Royce’s story in Bahrain stretches back many decades. The luxury automobile manufacturer’s first dealer was Al Zayani family, one of the most established names in the Kingdom’s automobile history, who recognised the brand’s synonymousness with uncompromising luxury, a reputation that it still maintains to this day. The Rolls-Royce Phantom has been widely regarded as ‘the best car in the world’ ever since its launch in 1925. A true testament to the marque’s pursuit of perfection, visionary engineering, and aesthetic acuity, each subsequent incarnation of this iconic model has earned the prestigious title.

172-177 RR D38.indd 173

The eighth generation of this nameplate is bold and dynamic from every angle. From the side view, it retains the 2:1 proportions, with a short front and long rear overhang, an upright front and a flowing rear. The side frame finisher is a large single piece of soft hand-polished stainless steel to accentuate the elegant stance of the car and preserve the wide rear area’s sense of privacy. At the heart of the New Phantom’s design aesthetic is ‘The Gallery’, a contemporary and luxury reinterpretation of the dashboard and instrument panel area. The typically blank area that is normally used to hide components can be turned into a piece of art.

Experience

Customers can choose an artist or designer to work with to create an individual piece that could be an oil painting or even a gold-plated 3D-printed map of an owner’s DNA. Underpinning the new model is a newly developed aluminium spaceframe, affectionately dubbed the “Architecture of Luxury”. It ensures the architectural and proportional lineage of Rolls-Royce while delivering a whole new level of ‘Magic Carpet Ride’ because it is lighter, stiffer, quieter and more technologically advanced. A new double-wishbone front axle and five-link rear axle deliver astounding levels of control, incredible agility and stability. In addition, the suspension makes millions of calculations every second as it continuously varies the electronically controlled shock absorber adjustment system – reacting to body and wheel acceleration, steering inputs and camera information. Under the bonnet, the new Phantom also benefits from a completely new 6.75-litre V12 engine. It employs two turbo chargers that contribute to a low-end torque output of 900Nm at an incredibly low 1,700rpm whilst also delivering 563bhp. The addition of Satellite Aided Transmission, married to a ZF 8-Speed gearbox

01 “The best car in the world”, since 1925

ensures that the driver is prepared for whatever the road has in store for them. The marque went to great lengths to create ‘the most silent motor car in the world’. Cabin noise is kept to an absolute minimum thanks to 6mm two-layer glazing all around the car, more than 130kg of sound insulation, the largest ever cast aluminium joints in a body-in-white for better sound insulation, and use of high absorption materials. This may be the most technologically advanced Phantom ever. Some of the assistance systems onboard include: Alertness Assistant, a four-camera system with Panoramic View, all-round visibility including helicopter view, Night Vision and Vision Assist, Active Cruise Control, Collision Warning, Pedestrian Warning, Cross-Traffic Warning, Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning, an industry leading 7x3 high-resolution headup display, Wi-Fi hotspot, and, of course, the latest navigation and entertainment systems. The new Phantom is a creation of great beauty and power, a dominant symbol of wealth and human achievement, and an icon and an artwork that embraces the personal desires of each individual customer.

02 The new model is even lighter and quieter 03 The Rolls-Royce Phantom against the backdrop of the Four Seasons Hotel 04 Rolls-Royce has always symbolized wealth and human achievement 05 The 8th generation of the Phantom is the most technologically advanced yet

Bentley Continental GT The new, third-generation Continental GT is the pinnacle of Bentley’s design and engineering achievements, and marks the next step in the company’s journey. This sleek new model combines spirited, focused performance with handcrafted luxury and cutting-edge technology, to create one of the finest Grand Tourers ever produced. Under the bonnet is a 6.0-litre, W12 TSI – the most advanced 12-cylinder engine in the world. The new powertrain uses the latest engine management technology, with 300 million software calculations per second. It produces 626 bhp, 900Nm of torque, accelerates from 0- 100kmph in 3.7 seconds, and can reach a top speed of 333kmph. The dual-clutch eight-speed transmission provides smooth acceleration, and impressively quick gearshifts as well as improved fuel economy. Shift times are variable and depend on the selected driving mode – Sport for maximum acceleration, Comfort for a smooth ride, and Dynamic, which the driver can personalise to suit his requirements. The introduction of Electric Power-Assisted Steering (EPAS) improves feedback to the driver, while providing isolation from unwanted road disturbances. EPAS is offered with a wide range of other features, including Active Lane Assist, Traffic Jam Assist, Park Assist, Continuous Damping Control, and Active All-Wheel Drive, to name a few. The exterior design is bold and fresh yet still unmistakably Bentley. Its aluminium skin has been crafted using Super Formed technology, which allows designers

178-185 Automotive D38- Cars.indd 181

to invoke more complex, sharply defined body-lines and a deeper, sculpted haunch muscle. This is the first production car ever to have an entire body side made from the Super Formed process. The interior design is sophisticated and replete with high-end finishes. From natural leathers, to rare, sustainably sourced veneers – including Koa– and handpolished chrome details, this Grand Tourer screams class. The centre console is finished to match the lower fascia, but can be specified in a new technical finish inspired by the delicate mechanical surfacing inside automatic Swiss watches, known as Côtes de Genève. The infotainment system can be accessed via a driver-orientated instrument panel, which is now fully digital and configurable by the driver. The new Continental benefits from features designed to keep both driver and passengers connected at all times such as Apple CarPlay, which can be connected via a USB port. This model is available with the optional, industry-first Bentley Rotating Display. At first glance there appears to be no screen in the centre of the dashboard, but when the engine start button is pressed, the veneer in the middle of the dashboard rotates to reveal a 12.3-inch retina-quality digital MMI display. This model can be customised to add a touch of your unique personality with several paint colours, carpet styles, interior trim options, and specification packages to choose from. bentleymotors.com

Ferrari Portofino This exciting GT is the latest offering from the Prancing Horse’s stable and it looks set to dominate its segment thanks to its combination of finesse, power, and versatility. Capable of unleashing a massive 600cv and sprinting from 0-200 kmph in just 10.8 seconds, the Ferrari Portofino is the most powerful convertible to unite the advantages of a retractable hard top, a roomy boot, and generous cockpit space. It also features two rear seats suitable for short trips. The new model, which takes its name from a village on the Italian Riviera, converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupé to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and driving pleasure even in day-to-day situations. The retractable hard top has been completely redesigned and can now be opened or closed in just 14 seconds on the move at lower speeds, making the car even more practical. The Portofino’s V8 engine continues Ferrari’s zero turbo lag tradition, with instantaneous throttle response in under a second. This is the direct result of solutions such as: a flat-plane crankshaft; compact turbines with a low moment of inertia and twin-scroll technology; and a single-cast exhaust manifold with equal-length pipes to

178-185 Automotive D38- Cars.indd 184

optimise the pressure waves. Significantly reduced weight and a 40cv higher power output than the California T have resulted in a significant hike in performance and a corresponding drop in emissions. Vehicle dynamics also benefit from the introduction of electric power steering, the thirdgeneration electronic differential, and the latest evolution of the electronic suspension control system (SCM-E) integrated with Premium 9.1 ESP. While the exterior instantly marks out the Portofino’s vocation, its cabin has also been carefully designed and developed. The dashboard architecture in particular features two shells, which incorporate all of the technical components, and a bridge, which visually connects the instrument panel area with the central tunnel. One signature characteristic of any Ferrari is the meticulous care given to the selection of the materials, trims and assembly procedures. Every last detail marries high-tech elements and high-end materials with manual assembly and handcrafted finishes and this model is no exception. ferrari.com

PHIL CUTTANCE FACETURE VASE Each vase is produced individually by casting resin into a simple handmade mould. The mould is then manually manipulated to create the object’s form before each casting, making every piece utterly unique. Each vase is handmade, one of a kind, and is numbered on the base. The Faceture Vase is one of Cuttance’s remarkably unique projects, which include vases made by welding plastic offcuts together, and coat hooks made from toy animals. Image credit: ‘Petr Krecji’

Book Review

Daring Creativity catalogues the finest work by Fawaz Gruosi. Compiled by award-winning journalist and acclaimed jewellery historian, Vivienne Becker, it delves deep into the vision and the visionary behind de Grisogono’s stunning creations. Encompassing his most iconic pieces and the ideas that inspired them, this book explores how he imagines in colours and designs in light.

Overriding the Rules

F

awaz dynamically drives De Grisogono. He is a creative force, full of energy, known for a ‘lust for life’ that is as exuberant, opulent, and celebratory as his designs. Creativity at De Grisogono is proliferate and spontaneous, stemming from Gruosi’s singular approach, characterised by impulsiveness, intuition, and impatience that overrides all conventions. De Grisogono’s first creation was a bespoke pair of pearl and diamond earrings for the Begum Salima Aga Khan, who epitomised the luxury and exclusivity that would come to define the jeweller. Since then, influential women such as Sophia Loren, Duchess

Camilla of Cornwall, and Sharon Stone have donned Gruosi’s glittering designs, which explore black and white diamonds, uniquely coloured stones, and innovative yet classic form. However, de Grisogono is about so much more. Its opulent mix of Florentine and Byzantine influences, its striking gem combinations, and Gruosi’s unsurpassed handcraftsmanship make it unique in the jewellery world, as the arresting images in this luxury volume attest. degrisogono.com

Exploring History Cultural heritage can provide a sense of unity and belonging within a community. This is one of the themes explored in Dilmun: Love & Peace, a new limited-edition coffee table book tracing the history of one of most important ancient civilisations in the region, as seen through the eyes of more than 20 international artists.

R

owaq Al-Balqa Foundation for Arts, Jordan, partnered with Swiss-Belhotel Seef Bahrain, to launch this one-of-a-kind 300-page volume that contains dozens of paintings and photographs that illustrate the lifestyle of the Dilmun civilization, its geographical expansion and its arts and legends. Translated into five languages –Arabic, English, French, German and Italian – the old myths and legends conveyed in the book highlight themes of existence and immortality. The artists who created the stunning work draw attention to the necessity of exposing human history, particularly in areas of conflict. Dilmun appeared on the island of Bahrain and was a hub on a major trading route between Mesopotamia

and the Indus Valley in South Asia. It is also believed that Dilmun had commercial ties with ancient sites at Elam in Oman, Alba in Syria, and Haittan in Turkey. Some of the artists featured in the book include, Saad Yagan, Abbas al-Moussawi, Hammoud Shantout, Kamal Al-Zu’bi, Sharif, Shadi Daoud, Rima Al Mazin, Fadi Daoud, Jackie Taylor, Haitham Abdul Hafeez, Rashed Diab, Jamal Rahimhani Dallah, Tayseer Barakat, Safwan Dahoul, Manfred Erber, Loay Daoud, Rima Al-Juburi, Assel Quzmar, Khaled Shati, and Khaldoon Daoud.
