‘PENUMBRA: Textured Shadow, Colored Light’, the latest exhibition by Bahraini artist Rashid Al Khalifa, explores the concepts of shadow and light at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery in London. 01
The exhibition showcased several works inspired by Arab heritage and Rashid’s interest in the significance of the Mashrabiya, a characteristic of Middle Eastern architecture. Typically a projecting oriel window enclosed with carved wooden latticework on the second story of a building or higher, its purpose was to ensure privacy where the occupant can see but cannot be seen, whilst also giving shade and protection from the sun’s heat, allowing a gentle breeze to pass through.

A prominent architectural element in the Arab world for centuries, it is both the aesthetic as well as functional value of the Mashrabiya that presented Rashid with a stimulus for research and further development of his work. Furthermore, his assimilation of certain paradoxes; light and shadow, internal and external, illusion and reality, enabled him to represent that moment of transition when contrary forces become complimentary, resulting in a tangible duality. It is due to the complexity of the works presented that the exhibition manages to challenge the viewer’s sense of perception. Wall installations constructed of intricate aluminum and multi-hued flaps create an undulating fluidity and their resulting geometric patterns generate illusions of space and depth. Suspended mobiles and a colossal maze were the cornerstones of the showcase, offering an immersive, urbanized experience, reminiscent of the winding narrow alleyways and the traditional architecture of Bahrain.
Known for his propensity to test boundaries and to challenge conventions, Rashid typically incorporates both his knowledge of contemporary design, cutting edge architecture and his grasp of traditional painting techniques into his work. He anticipates that the merging of these various disciplines with his strong sense of identity and heritage, will result in a harmonious and authentic body of work. Rashid began painting at the age of 16 and held his first exhibition in 1970, inspired by the landscapes and seascapes of his native country. From then on, his work has transformed and evolved and yet one can still sense spirit of the artist throughout his oeuvre. Penumbra refers to the partial shadow between the region of full shadow and full illumination. The title derived from Rashid’s exploration of that partially illuminated, indefinable space that nurtures an aptitude for insight and perception. rashidalkhalifa.me

Ammar Basheir says: “We are all soldiers of our own dreams. Each one of us has a nutcracker prince, a soldier or a hero - you may name it as you wish. Precious and dazzling like a jewel, that dream stands high in the clouds and is protected by an entourage of soldiers, who make that dream come true”. This is the first time in its history, that Four Seasons’ original hotel, Four Seasons Hotel London at Park Lane, has unveiled such a spectacular larger-than-life festive installation. Lynn Brutman, General Manager says: “We are delighted to be working with Ammar Basheir. His vision and creativity have allowed us to transform the hotel with a magnificent installation for the festive season, which showcases his love of fine craftsmanship and visual surprises, as well as bringing the magic to life”. Ammar Basheir’s diverse design projects have showcased his love of fine craftsmanship and visual surprises.
Visual trickery and surprise characterise much of his work, which is often dazzling in scale and substance. Ammar Basheir has carved out a niche for himself as the go to designer of atmospheric spaces for some of the Gulf’s most discerning tastemakers, designing interiors for more than 120 private houses, retail spaces and restaurants, creating public installations all over the world and working on a number of high-profile projects, including Amal and George Clooney’s post wedding party. Creating his own distinct design identity, Ammar has challenged himself to grow as a designer, and taught himself ‘that anything is possible’, and ‘to think outside the box, because there shouldn’t be one in the first place’. ‘The Nutty Prince’ installation will be on display from Tuesday 4 December 2018, until 5 January.

Waheed Al Khan is an experienced strategic businessman, with knowledge that spans the fields of music, entertainment, management, and development sectors. A genuine talent, he comes from a family that appreciates the arts. His grandfather was a poet and his grandmother played an instrument. He learned how to play music from his youngest uncle. Facing a choice between studying petroleum engineering or music, he opted for the latter and joined the Cairo Conservatory of Music in 1974, later graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Oboe and Piano, and then a Master’s Degree in Ethnomusicology.
A student of international instructors and mentors such as US Professor Martha Roy from the USA, Hungary’s Dr. Margit Toth, and Egypt’s Professor Samha El-Khouly, he had composed many musical pieces both locally and around the world. Some of his works include Rise, Our Waltz, My Muharraq, Dance for Me, Demeaning Love and Loyalty. He also designed and directed numerous multimedia shows in ceremonies and major international events. Recently, he had performed The Return, his newest project, at the 27th edition of the Arab Music Festival held in Cairo earlier this year. The

Return is a historical documentary that highlights the return journey of His Majesty Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al-Khalifa, who was the grandfather of HM King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, to Bahrain as a governor chosen by Bahraini people. The music describes a scene of a ship sailing through waves using the “almkholvi” rhythm, derived from songs about diving for pearls. Bahrain residents receive the news of the return of Sheikh Isa Bin Ali Al-Khalifa, and old and young alike welcome the governor, this translated to a distinctive musical scene. The project aimed to present Bahrain to the whole world, starting with a concert in Hungary that received outstanding feedback.

THE Experience is Everything Saks Fifth Avenue Bahrain Senior Division Manager, Mark Asfahani reveals how their life-long motto shaped the brand’s decade-long success in the Kingdom.
Saks Fifth Avenue has recently celebrated its 10th year in Bahrain. What do you think is the reason behind its long-term success in the Kingdom? Saks Fifth Avenue has a very long and rich heritage that we are proud of and continuously follow its footsteps in always introducing the best to the market as well as creating a lasting experience with our guests. Saks is the only department store in Bahrain that carries such a wide variety of luxury brands under one roof, it’s a destination of fashion in the island. Our associates act as personal shoppers to each one of our guests by always updating them with our latest collections or helping them select what’s best for them depending on their interests or occasions. We Do not take anything for granted and appreciate every single client and visitor to our store as we had to work very hard to gain and retain their trust. Our customers are well aware of the latest trends and are always looking for the best in the market and that’s what we are
034-037 Saks Interview D42.indd 35
here to offer. Bahrain has been an amazing place to start this venture and the generosity and worm attitude of its residents makes the experience such a pleasant one.
01 Mark Asfahani
Are there any new brands you’re planning to include under the Saks umbrella soon? We are always updating our offer and introducing the latest trends and the hottest brands globally. We recently added Valentino, Pleats Please, and Givenchy as a shop in shop concept. We added Off White to name a few and will continue to update and add new brands to our matrix.
What qualities does Saks look for in a brand before including it in its department stores? We ask ourselves: does the brand match with Saks core values and principles? What are the brand’s unique features and what makes it different and more attractive than others? Does

More than 500 of the most iconic jewels ever produced by Bvlgari are on display at the Tribute to Femininity exhibition at the Moscow Kremlin State Historical and Cultural Museum and Heritage Site. The exhibition celebrates the charisma of women who made their own rules and chose Bvlgari jewels as an embodiment of their personality for both formal and informal occasions. The stunning jewellery anthology will include creations that have never been on public display before such as a marvellous tiara of the 1930s with a beautiful arrangement of aquamarines and diamonds that was worn by Princess Olimpia Torlonia for her wedding day. Also from the 1930s, spectacular convertible pieces in platinum set with diamonds conjure up the fashion of the decade when long necklaces and clips embellished the corset-free flowing dresses that were so suited to dancing the
Charleston at parties. Creations from the flourishing Dolce Vita period are vivid mementoes of the enthusiasm of the most legendary and self-assured film stars for Bvlgari. For the occasion, the complete Bvlgari Heritage Collection of jewels that belonged to Elizabeth Taylor will be on display, evidence of her decided tastes and unerring collector’s eye. The creations illustrate Bvlgari’s fun-loving and non-conforming spirit. On display are the Parentesi jewels, the first Bvlgari modular collection which pioneered the prêt-à-porter approach for jewellery. Also featured are the Tubogas pieces which comprise gold and precious stones suspended on interchangeable silk cords: a brilliant, unprecedented idea that allowed women to match the piece to their clothes. bulgari.com

Arabian Dreams Jude Benhalim introduces luxury jewellery inspired by the desert with ‘La Sierra’. 01 The Summit Earrings, Bracelets and Ring
La Sierra is the new high-end Fall-Winter 2019 collection by jewellery designer Jude Benhalim, a promising young Cairo-based designer who founded her namesake brand when she was just 17 years old. Inspired by the majesty of the Saharan desert and the peaks of its golden dunes, this collection is an exploration of the desert landscape, merging the grandeur of nature and beauty of art into luxury statement jewellery. While paying tribute to her Arabian roots, Jude Benhalim channels the curves and shapes typically found in desert landscapes to create pieces reminiscent of an undulating landscape glistening like liquid gold. She is the personification of the grand Sahara Desert, transforming desert dunes and hues of golden sand into wearable jewellery.

The collection features asymmetric, amplified silhouettes experimenting with the ideas of balance and movement. Thoughtfully mixing gold-plated brass and 925 silver with custommade resin stones, the pieces offer an artful yet wearable composition. La Sierra features a total of 11 gold-plated brass and 925 sterling silver pieces with varying necklaces, earrings, bracelets and rings. The designer’s love of colour is shown throughout the collection, with each piece of resin crafted and dyed by hand. The colour palette for the collection is very autumnal, infusing burgundy, petroleum blue and teal resin stones. judebenhalim.com

Everlasting Timepieces A. Lange and Söhne CEO, Wilhelm Schmid on the long-standing appeal and legacy of the 173-year old German manufacture.
A. Lange & Söhne is largely viewed as a traditional brand. How do you promote it to a younger or new generation? I think there’s this misconception that traditional brands don’t appeal to younger generations. What is a classical watch? Is Porsche a classic car? Yes, it is. Is it contemporary? Yes. I don’t think it’s written somewhere that young people don’t like quality, rarity, or exclusivity. Yes, you need to have money to buy but that’s another topic. This is about taste. Young people can be refined enough to indulge in something as special as A. Lange & Söhne, or a car, or jewellery, or property, or a vacation. So, I do believe that young people can like classical things too.

Could you tell us a bit about the Triple Split? What motivated you to pursue such a mechanical feat? And how much work went into it? Sometimes, I myself am quite surprised at what our team can accomplish. We launched the Double Split in 2004. Even today, there’s no competitor
for the Double Split in the market. We’re still ahead of the competition. Yet, they came up with the idea to make it with a split hour. So, I told them to go ahead as long as the dimensions of the watch don’t change into bigger or heavier. They did it. They came up with the Triple Split and somehow managed to find room to generate the extra dial while retaining the original dimensions.
As part of Richemont Group, do you consider the other brands under the group to be your competitors? No because within the Group, there’s only one that produces watches solely out of precious metals without producing, say, sports watches. For a brand to be a competitor, you first need to find a brand with a similar profile. We can’t compete with a range for ladies or sports because that’s a different field. Of course, there are areas within the Group where we do compete because our goal in common is to make beautiful watches. But even this boils down to taste, so one would be French-romantic, other would be German-legible, for example.

To what do you contribute the longstanding appeal of the Lange 1? Even when it was launched, the Lange 1 was very unique. The dial was designed with decentral hour and minute counter and outsized date. It looked deconstructed. That’s the beauty of it. It’s symmetric even if it doesn’t appear to be so. This is why even in today’s world, it’s quite a unique watch. For us, it epitomizes legibility. It boasts 3 days of power reserve, perfect symmetry on the dial, comes in 2 different sizes, and is available with more complications if you wish. It truly appeals to people.
046-049 A Lang D42.indd 48
How would you define A. Lange & Söhne’s legacy? What do people think of when they think of its brand? There are people who know what we do, and there are people who really know us. I would speak only for those who know us. The understatement of the dial, the quality of every single part. If you turn it around and look at the opulence of the movement, that’s only for you and not for the public, unless you want to share it. It’s a form of wealth. You know what you have is expensive, but only those who understand watchmaking will admire the thought. This is why people who really know us admire us the most.

Are there plans to focus on new regions? We have growing interests in the Middle East. It’s definitely a growing market for us for the past seven years, and hopefully, it will continue to grow.
What does A. Lange & Söhne have in store for the future? A lot! I don’t want to share it now because it’s a surprise and people like us because we know how to surprise them. But rest assured, we will not run out of steam. You can look forward to us delivering more positive surprises just as we have always done. www.alange-soehne.com

Astronomical Success Bovet Middle East Sales Director, Kurt Hefti, on the Recital 22 Grand Recital and Bovet’s extraordinary traits.
How many times has Bovet participated in Jewellery Arabia? And what do you personally like about it? This is my 7th time here in Bahrain. Before that, my predecessor represented Bovet three times as well, so this is Bovet’s 10th anniversary with Jewellery Arabia. It’s also the 10th time we are here in support of Asia Jewellers, who have been with us since the beginning. We like Jewellery Arabia because it’s a very well-organized exhibition. It gets a large number of visitors from Saudi Arabia, so it’s an opportunity for us to display our timepieces to customers from both countries.
Can you tell us a bit about the Récital 22 Grand Récital? What makes it a Bovet? For that, I have to take you back to two years ago. In 2016, we introduced the very first timepiece in a series of four. The Recital 22 Grand Recital is the 3rd in that series. If you look closely at it, you will see it has an unusual shape that we called ‘inclined case’. The inspiration for this came from Pascal Raffy’s younger days when they had school desks exactly in that shape. No one has ever done this before.
050-051 UCP Bovet D42.indd 50
You can see it’s quite unique. It’s also very clever because this is bound to be a trademark for Bovet. This watch is what you’d call Tellurium. Basically, you have the Earth, the sun, and the moon. So the Earth is going to turn once every 24 hours. There’s a date function on the watch. The moon will orbit the earth 29.513 days, which is exactly the way it is. If you turn the watch over, you have a perpetual calendar with retrograde date, and you have a button at 12 o’clock. This is one of the most interesting features. So, let’s say your timepiece stops for 4 days. You don’t have to wind it. Instead of changing the day of the week or the month, you simply push four times – because it stopped four days ago – and everything sets automatically. This is what’s so special about the Recital 22 Grand Recital. It makes complicated easy.
all of it together, which means a total of two weeks for just one timepiece.
What qualities set Bovet apart from its competitors? If you really look at a Bovet timepiece, you’ll see that the finishing of each component is done beautifully. This is one of our distinguishing features. Look at every component under a microscope and you will see how beautiful it truly is. There are so many different features that we use for finishing the timepieces. Another unique function is that Bovet watches use the Amadeo system, which means the timepiece can turn into a table clock or pocket watch without using any tools.
How many hours of work usually go into producing a Bovet watch?
If you had to choose only one Bovet as your favorite, which one would it be and why?
It depends. For example, with the Recital 22 Grand Recital, we manufacture all the components. Then, they are put together into a kit. That kit will then be presented to a watchmaker who will assemble them from beginning to end. It takes about 60 hours to put
If you ask Mr. Pascal Raffy, his answer is clear. It’s the one you haven’t seen yet. It’s the one he’s dreaming of and will come out soon. So, you can never choose one and then it’s over. There’s always something new.
19/12/2018 14:51
What do you want people to think of when they hear the name Bovet? Wonderful quality, finishing that’s second to none, and uniqueness. We respect our collectors by keeping our quantities limited. For example, the Recital 22 Grand Recital is limited to only 60 movements. Then it’s finished. That’s why collectors appreciate Bovet.
What’s the next step for Bovet? Are there any new projects you can share with us? In 2019, Bovet will participate in the SIHH Exhibition in Geneva. We will be inside, which is a very big development that we are excited about. Bovet also won the Aiguille d’Or at the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève this year for the Recital 22 Grand Recital. That was a big moment for us. And in Dubai, it also won the Middle East Watch of the Year for Best Design 2018. There will be many more introductions coming in 2019, so expect for Bovet to continue surprising the watch world like it has always done. bovet.com

The Constellation collection has long been OMEGA’s symbol of unrivalled precision in watchmaking. With a name inspired by the stars above us, it has sought to redefine the standards by which we measure time and has always done so with elegant beauty and class. This year, the Constellation takes its next step, offering 101 new models for women which not only offer exceptional variety, but also the excellence of precision that this family of watches is known for. In the 29 mm models, mechanical supremacy is delivered through the inclusion of an OMEGA Master Co-Axial movement, assured by the 8 strict tests that every Master Chronometer certified watch faces before it leaves the factory. Yet for this entire new line, it is the outward craftsmanship that truly stands out. The refined makeover has touched upon almost every part of the iconic design, while still keeping the central “Manhattan” look that has been a firm favourite for more than 36 years. The moment of discovery has arrived. omegawatches.com

TAG Heuer Carbon Series To celebrate the end of summer 2018, the Swiss watchmaker is presenting its most modern line of models yet, developed based on carbon and sold exclusively in TAG Heuer boutiques. The Carbon Aquaracer is available in three models, each standing out thanks to hints of blue, yellow or rose gold. The 41mm black PVD-covered titanium case houses the carbon bezel. The dial boasts an imitation carbon effect. It’s therefore a watch that’s durable and solid, but above all, light. The full black look, subtly illuminated by hints of colour, lends the piece elegance and modernity. Thanks to the random injection of carbon fibres into a resin pressed at high temperatures, each piece is unique, boasting an exclusive black and grey marbled motif. A look that evokes the depths of the oceans. Waterproof to 300m, the Aquaracer Carbon is the perfect watch for setting off in search of adventure while maintaining the stylish, sporty look that’s inseparable from TAG Heuer. The watch is enhanced by a beautiful black textile strap whose topstitching echoes the colours of the dial. Also available is the TAG Heuer Monaco Bamford, the first collaboration in the serial production of a watch for Bamford Watch Department. It’s a brand new interpretation of the iconic TAG Heuer Monaco, sporting a solid carbon case and an elegant full black dial that enhance the aqua blue chronometers. tagheuer.com

Chopard Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Racing Stripes Edition This chronograph is inspired by cars having taken part in the Mille Miglia between 1927 and 1940. Enhanced by two traditional pushers and a fluted crown echoing those of vintage chronographs, the steel case of the Mille Miglia Classic Chronograph Racing Stripes edition features pleasingly balanced dimensions. The dial ensures perfect readability thanks to wide Arabic numerals that are luminescent in the dark, as are the hands. The slim cursive fonts and the counters are inspired by 1920s car dashboards and stand out clearly by contrast with their background. The sweep-seconds hand features a bright red tip to tick off the precious seconds of the race. The arrow-shaped “Rossa Corsa” red Mille Miglia logo appears at the heart of the dial at 12 o’clock, as well as around the rim of the exhibition case-back. Embodying an ideal blend of precision, comfort and elegance, these watches are authentic auxiliaries for drivers driving at top speeds. These timekeepers are teamed with a black calfskin leather strap with blue stitching and with rubber lining inspired by the 1960s Dunlop Racing tyre-tread profile. chopard.com
Ulysse Nardin Classic Tourbillon Falcon Ulysse Nardin pays homage to the UAE’s falconry tradition with the Classic Tourbillon Falcon in Cloisonné enamel. Equipped with the UN-178 Manufacture movement, the new Classic Tourbillon Falcon is adorned with a dial displaying a faithful reproduction of a falconry scene in the desert at sunrise. One can admire the quality of the details, produced by the dexterous hand of the master enameler. The miniature scale and the repeated firing necessary to create the vitreous enamel highlights the superior talent of the masters, who spend more than 50 hours making the gold “cloisons” or compartments that comprise the dial’s design. The CLASSIC Falcon Tourbillon provides a three-dimensional effect thanks to the thickness of the enamel layer. On the right, a man can be seen in a white dishdasha, the traditional Emirati clothing for men. On the left is a peregrine falcon, the national emblem of the United Arab Emirates. With wings spread in a strong, majestic pose, it is about to land on the welcoming arm of its master, who is looking in its direction. ulysse-nardin.com

Corum Golden Bridge Titane DLC The pervasive presence of a black DLC treatment on its case, bezel, and buckle forms the basis of the design. All of these components stand out with their depth, allowing for a stunning contrast with the baguette movement which, with its white or pink gold reflections, attracts all the light. As sculptural as ever, the baguette movement once again proves both its versatility and its modernity. Here, it works alongside a structure developed specifically by Corum which embodies a geometry of overlapping bridges that evoke the most stunning masterpieces of human genius, notably the suspension bridges like the Golden Gate or the Brooklyn Bridge. It is in total consistency with Corum’s artistic universe, its roots in La Chaux-de-Fonds (where Le Corbusier was born), its historical attachment to art and its capacity to break free from watchmaking codes. The piece is available in two versions: white gold and pink gold. This variation is found on the movement, the hands, the flange, the crown and the screws which maintain the structure of both sides of the baguette movement. The rest of the covering is black. It’s the first time that Corum has conferred a black rubber bracelet, veined and engraved with the brand’s name, upon its Golden Bridge. corum-watches.com
Chronoswiss Flying Regulator Open Gear Anniversary Edition Chronoswiss is celebrating its 35-year history with the limited Flying Regulator Open Gear Anniversary Edition – hence the red 35 on the minute scale – and simultaneously honoring its bestselling model. The anniversary watch’s unusual design is a play on the Regulator theme, placing it front and center with the “Open Gear” design. The dial is simultaneously its module board, onto which the train wheel bridges of the skeletonized gears are mounted. The train wheel bridges have also been elaborately skeletonized and boast carefully angled and polished edges. Six visually appealing blued screws keep them reliably in their place on the dial, showcasing once again the brand’s principle of functional design. The Flying Regulator Open Gear also reveals surprising insights at 6 o’clock. The dial and the bridge have been skeletonized at the height of the small second so that you can see the second wheel in action. Manufactured in a limited edition of just 35 watches, the Anniversary Edition features stainless steel cases with silver-colored dials and blue outer rings. Another 35 timepieces are available in solid 18-karat red gold with a blue dial and silver outer ring. All dials for the anniversary watch are painstakingly guillochéd by hand in the House of Chronoswiss studios in Lucerne using a historical rose engine machine. The individual limited edition number is also applied by hand. Super-LumiNova inlays on the hands and indexes also always ensure optimum legibility in the dark. chronoswiss.com

Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT The Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon GMT is a new generation of its predecessor, with the addition of the flying tourbillon and dial animations. The black ceramic bezel provides a contemporary frame to a resolutely high-tech dial design with redesigned bridges, a flying tourbillon at 9 o’clock, a GTM or second time zone function at 3 o’clock and an asymmetric look. It is a powerful mix of sandblasted titanium and black ceramic with contrasting pink gold-toned inserts for a new multifaceted architecture. The HNR selection indicator hand has also been replaced with a disc to match with the new movement aesthetic. The HNR selection indicator signals the crown’s three positions: hours (heure) – to set the time; neutral (neutre) – when the crown is pushed all the way in, and windingmechanism (remontoir) – to wind the movement. audemarspiguet.com
A. Lange & Sohne Datograph Up/Down “Lumen” What strikes the eye at first sight of the DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN is its vibrant and yet harmoniously balanced dial design. The characteristic outsize-date display in the framed double aperture marks the tip of an equilateral triangle. Its baseline is defined by the two subsidiary dials for the seconds and the precisely jumping minute counter. In the DATOGRAPH UP/DOWN “Lumen”, the ingenious configuration unfolds a new aesthetic dimension as soon as darkness sets in. But the real stunner is the luminous outsize date. Composed of two separate display elements, the outsize date is designed to glow immediately after the midnight switching sequence as well. This is made possible with a luminous tens cross and a black printed units disc made of transparent glass which rotates above a luminous background. Both elements must be able to recharge during the day when they are positioned beneath the dial. This is enabled by the semi-transparent dial; even during the day, it endows the watch with inimitable aesthetic appeal. When exposed to light, the entire mechanism is clearly visible. The switching action of the date display at midnight can be observed in detai alange-soehne.com

Van Cleef & Arpels Poetic Astronomy Dazzled by the spectacle of the heavens and stars, Van Cleef & Arpels pays homage to these marvels with its Poetic Astronomy. A starry sky, the constellations of the Zodiac, the journey of the Sun and Moon, the ballet of the planets: the creations combine the poetry of the heavens and the measurement of time to endow each instant with a unique emotion. Throughout the collections, watchmakers, jewelers and craftsmen deploy their savoirfaire to bring miniature tableaux to life, ushering the onlooker into a world of contemplation and dreams. As part of Poetic Astronomy, Van Cleef & Arpels has revisited its Midnight Planétarium watch to provide a feminine interpretation. Featuring both refined aesthetics and an automatic movement developed exclusively for the Maison, the Lady Arpels Planétarium watch depicts the Sun and its closest planets: Mercury, Venus and Earth – accompanied by its satellite, the Moon. Each heavenly body moves at its actual speed, orbiting the dial in 88 days for Mercury, 224 days for Venus and 365 days for Earth. In a major innovation, the Moon also rotates around the Earth on this piece, completing its orbit in 29.5 days and bringing the dial to life with its daily dance. vancleefarpels.com
Parmigiani Fleurier Kalparisma Nova Galaxy In 2008, Parmigiani Fleurier launched the Kalparisma family, its first mechanical collection for women. The brand is now celebrating the tenth anniversary of this phenomenal collection with the Kalparisma Nova Galaxy, a watch that is more feminine and captivating than ever. The Kalparisma Nova Galaxy is available in two majestic versions that differ both in terms of case material, and specifically the stone-setting that adorns them. The first, in rose gold with its shimmering reflections, matches the indices and Nova star. The sides of the case are set with 46 Top Wesselton diamonds for a total of ~0.84 carats and a glittering play of light. The stone-set rose gold edition is limited to 50 pieces. It is joined by the even more exclusive white gold version: a total of 8 pieces with a dazzling “snow” setting. The entire case is set with painstakingly arranged diamonds in sizes expertly selected by the master stone-setter – smaller on the periphery, and gradually getting bigger as they near the case’s curves. Each of the 182 stones has a role to play in this ~2.28-carat fresco, which evokes glittering snow and blends harmoniously with the dial’s constellation. parmigiani.com

Chopard L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese zodiac In a renewed demonstration of its longstanding dedication to perpetuating artistic crafts as well as celebrating traditional Chinese culture, Chopard introduces a new one-of-a-kind timepiece honouring these two realms: the artisans of the Manufacture have created a case in ethical 18-carat rose gold, entirely hand-engraved and depicting the 12 signs of the Chinese zodiac. Inside it beats a highly sophisticated perpetual calendar tourbillon calibre with a nine-day power reserve. This exclusive work of art, a tribute to an age-old culture, is intended for the most discerning collectors. With the L.U.C Perpetual T Spirit of the Chinese zodiac, Chopard once again gives free rein to the genius of its Mains d’Art, the Maison’s gifted artisans who cultivate expertise inherited from generations of watchmakers before them. It represents a next-level expression of the Manufacture’s annual tradition of creating a L.U.C XP Urushi watch paying homage to the zodiac sign of the year in progress. This time, all the animals of the Chinese zodiac are depicted on the ethical 18-carat rose gold case middle of this one-of-a-kind model. This is achieved using the champlevé engraving technique, an art that calls for meticulous patience in order to hollow out tiny cavities in a subtle play on volutes and light effects. In all, the artisan devoted more than 210 hours to bringing the 12 symbolic animals of the Chinese calendar to life on the gold case. The tiger’s head appears on the crown, for example, while its body follows the curve of the case middle. The space between the lugs is adorned with a dragon and a snake. chopard.com

Hermes Double Jeu Have you seen it? Do you still see it? The H playing hide and seek, vanishing, the better to reveal itself. At times concealed and at others highlighted, it disappears so as to reappear more clearly. The Heure H Double Jeu plays with the codes of Hermès’ identity. In its vertical-set version, the capital letter is boldly enhanced with diamonds, while in the horizontal setting, it slips away, its lines softened. A joyful sleight of hand that reinvents the spirit of the Heure H watch, designed in 1996 by Philippe Mouquet. Playful and contemporary, the Heure H Double Jeu watch carries within its square the paradox of lacquer and diamonds. Its steel case celebrates contrasts. In black or white lacquer, it is reinvented through two graphic compositions that subtly stage the letter H. Whether vertically adorned with 122 diamonds or embellished in its horizontal version with 93 diamonds framing a dial also set with 138 diamonds, it extends an invitation to temporal recreation by playing with tones and luminescence. A skilful double jeu that either accentuates the H or merely hints at it. The black Barénia or white grained calfskin strap, enlarged by 3 mm on either side, merges with the dial in a simple tour around the wrist. hermes.com
Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon The Royal Oak Concept Flying Tourbillon is the first Royal Oak Concept model for women – and the first flying tourbillon released by Audemars Piguet. Haute Horlogerie unites with Haute Joaillerie in the creation of these 38.5 mm 18-carat white gold wristwatches set with either 3.7-carat brilliant-cut or 9.98-carat baguette-cut diamonds. They also present a fascinating and dynamic complication that appears to float. The timepiece has a distinctive aesthetic: the white gold dial features faceted stones resembling “icicles” and white lacquered decorations reminiscent of winter in the Vallée de Joux. This bold and intensely feminine piece adapts beautifully to a woman’s wrist. Satin-finished bridges, polished angles and white lacquered decorations are visible through the sapphire crystal caseback. On the dial side, the openworked barrel subtly appears at 11 o’clock, a snowflake amid diamond-set icicles. audemarspiguet.com

Mr. Burberry Indigo Eau de Toilette Burberry Mr. Burberry Indigo Eau de Toilette is fresh and energetic with citrus and woody notes, reminiscent of crisp air along the British coast. Aromatic violetleaf and spearmint oil invigorate notes of lemon and rosemary. Amber and oak moss bring depth. A veritable breath of fresh air. The new bottle honours the brand’s navy trench coat. Bold and masculine, the weighted cap references horn-look buttons, while a hand-tied knot in English- woven gabardine sits around the neck. Nebras Al Ishq Rasasi A new collection of intense perfumes oils available in all stores across United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain, the unisex line of Nebras Al Ishq is formed of three variants: Shorouk, Wahaj, and Noor. They have been inspired by a passion for additive gourmand notes coupled with hints of Oud. Shorouk exudes sophistication in a modern way with fresh and crisp top notes of bergamot, orange and lemon inspired by the Mediterranean. Wahaj is a tribute to beauty and radiance as its additive and refined perfume oil opens on a breath-taking floral bouquet of lotus flower, pure jasmine, majestic orris and damask rose. Noor blends together enigmatic dark nuances of rose and oud with spicy cardamom in perfect harmony. rasasi.com
The One Grey Dolce&Gabbana Drawing on The One’s for Men olfactory heritage to create a striking new interpretation, the juxtaposition of contrasting notes, distinctive of The One for Men Eau de Toilette and Eau de Parfum, reveals itself in a new unexpected Eau de Toilette Intense. The One Grey is a surprising fusion of opposites, grounding aromatic cardamom with earthy vetiver. The cardamom opens the fragrance, combined with bitter citrus notes of grapefruit. Lavander and vetiver power the heart of the scent, while the base reveals The One for Men’s signature sensuality with warm tobacco and elegant grey woods. Precious ambergris gives the fragrance a new intensity, lending a radiant and supremely addictive quality. dolcegabbana.com

La Notte Roberto Cavalli Christophe Raynaud’s Oriental Woody Fougere creation ideally complements its feminine counterpart. The sensual violet signature that defines Roberto Cavalli Uomo fragrances, is facetted with lavender and notes of bergamot. This overture is a study in elegance and refinement, a worthy prelude to a captivating encounter. The heart of the fragrance is an olfactive duality between the aromatic freshness of the clary sage and bold, piquant black pepper notes and cardamom. This striking contrast perfectly balances sensuality and authenticity, fearless audacity and perfect control. robertocavalli.com
Nuit D’issey Noir Argent Eau De Parfum Issey Miyake NUIT D’ISSEY NOIR ARGENT has a clean, spicy leatherwood fragrance. In the top note, fresh, tangy grapefruit combines with clean, spicy pink and black pepper fragrances for a sparkling first impression. The middle note provides a rich contrast with black leather. La Vie Est Belle Lancôme The world’s third best-selling fragrance, La Vie est Belle represents a choice. The choice to live one’s life and fill it with beauty. It is pure happiness– a balance of rich simplicity that mingles the nobility of iris with the depth of patchouli and the nostalgia of a gourmand accord. The bottle that holds it was inspired by Armand Petitjean’s idea, back in 1949, of capturing a woman’s smile in a bottle, as if sculpted in crystal. lancome.com
MUSK collection Rasasi Inspired by musk, a coveted scent from times of antiquity, the perfumer creates three unique scent journeys with the mystical and sensual white musk as the central muse. Inspired by the purity and innocence of a white veil, Musk-Naqaya is radiant with bright hesperidic notes, softened by luscious-velvety magnolia and rose essence and lent a pleasant assertiveness by the unique woody signature. Musk-Hareer is a magical fragrance that reflects the softness of silk. The fragrance opens on fresh aromatic notes of artemisia and davana. The seductive rose is the blossoming queen which is enhanced and lent a sparkle by a modern red fruit zest of raspberry. Musk-Sharqi is an intensely intoxicating Oriental journey that meanders through time paying a tribute to the pride and traditions of the Middle East. rasasi.com

La Notte Roberto Cavalli For La Notte, Louise Turner conceived a very glamorous Oriental White Floral. It opens with a sparkling and zesty overture of pink peppercorn and mandarin that is bound to captivate the senses and capture the attention. Building on the iconic orange flower signature that defines Roberto Cavalli feminine fragrances, the master perfumer added a seductive note of raspberry liqueur. This heady and sensual counterpoint perfectly highlights La Notte for woman’s nocturnal dimension. It speaks of intimacy and seduction, of exchanged glances and whispered confidences. The scent of sweet vanilla, mesmerizing woody dry amber facets and sophisticated patchouli in the base add a fascinating and slightly exotic echo to the fragrance. robertocavalli.com

Girl of Now Shine Elie Saab Inspired by the stunning silhouettes of Elie Saab collections, the new edition Girl of Now Shine emphasises its luminous magnetism, enhances its dazzling femininity and reveals the full magnitude of its aura. Just like the precious embroidery that adorns the Maison’s gowns, a sparkle of pineapple instantly highlights toasted pistachio. Voluptuous white flowers - ylang ylang and jasmine - flood the Ormond flower’ s delicious orangey almond scent with a golden light. Enveloped in a veil of powdery vanilla and iris, the vibrant base notes of patchouli become more sensual, almost smouldering. eliesaab.com
The Only One Dolce&Gabbana The new Eau de Parfum introduces a new facet of the Dolce&Gabbana woman: with a warm and vibrant spirit, The Only One celebrates this woman, her radiant allure, her innate joy of life. The Only One’s signature lies in the surprising combination of violet and coffee giving life to an enchanting floral scent. The violet opens the fragrance, combining with subtle touches of bergamot to create a lively, surprising and juicy bouquet. At the heart, seductive notes of rich coffee are blended with charming iris. Finally, the warm base of vanilla and patchouli lends a tactile, comforting quality, enveloping the senses in an opulent embrace. dolcegabbana.com

Glamourous Gowns The Fall 2019 collection encompasses a selection of elegant gowns best described as being “very Oscar”.
Strapless ball gowns with scattered embroideries and gestural details, like a soft bow in the back or a wrap-effect sweetheart bodice and an ivory gown in cut-out lace fern embroidery. Also new: the introduction of demi-couture gowns, which made up about half of this collection. They’ll be made to order, with room for customization. Consider the long-sleeved, all-over lace gown with a semi-sheer skirt, which could likely be lengthened, lined for more coverage, or embroidered with metallic or colorful threads. Another look in the demi-couture group was covered in hand-embroidered flowers with a strapless, V-neck bodice and giant tulle sash. Those gowns marked a refreshing new direction for Garcia and Kim at a time when fashion is becoming increasingly fastpaced, machine-made, and distant-feeling. oscardelarenta.com

Empowered Couture Critically acclaimed fashion brand AMATO has unveiled its latest limited edition 10-piece bridal collection titled ‘HOLY KNIGHT’ at a widely applauded show at Waterfront Hotel Cebu.
Furne Amato’s 2019 limited edition bridal collection for AMATO was an ode to womanhood and its milestones, emotions and battles: “Warrior Princesses, Armour of Strength, The Risks of Passion and Pure Vulnerablity”, explains the Dubaibased designer. The main show of Weddings at Waterfront, Furne Amato’s creations were set against a clean black landscape partially decorated with white blooms at the backdrop. True to style, the collection was at once fierce and delicate, deftly employing the house’s characteristic sharp tailoring and haunting elegance to dramatic effect. This season, pagan references, medieval silhouettes, dense ruffles, and pearl embroideries came together in a provocative, but empowering way, highlighting both the strength of women and the importance of vulnerability and emotion. Take the jute sack pieces – used as dresses train, inspired by a medieval bride – which were

matched with knitted lace dresses: hard and soft in perfect matrimony. Furne Amato was inspired by the 18th-century medieval-style renaissance princesses. The portraits of women featured on the limited-edition bridal collection 2019 mood board and atmospheric techniques inspired the approach and design of the dresses which became the basis of the collection. Taking up to three months, the fitting process is exacting work. The intricate creative process began in Dubai, where embroideries were pinned and fitted perfectly to the dress toile. Then handcrafted and hand sewn and fitted in the Dubai atelier ahead of the show. The overly puffed shoulder with ruffles and laced neckline and full skirt with front slit accented with DIAGOLD jewels takes to open the runway show. amatocouture.com

Manifesting the notion of the Givenchy couple, the designer mirrors female and male in each other and cross-pollinates their gender characteristics. It allows for properties conventionally comprehended as female or male to morph in a nonchalant approach to gender codes, reflective of an evolved global mentality. The transition evokes memories of iconoclasts of the past, enabling a free interaction of eras across the collection. In tailoring developed in the Haute Couture ateliers, a new shoulder takes shape: petite in proportion, it sends a strict crease down the front

Facets borrowed from military dress nod at a sense of gender-non-specific uniformity. Through day and eveningwear, dresses and skirts materialise only in very short or floor-length proportions, an expression further interpreted in asymmetrical cutaway pieces worked in soft stretch. givenchy.com

Never-fading Elegance The Paule Ka Spring 2019 collection is an ode to the woman who thinks only of tomorrow.
Designed for the 30th anniversary of the fashion house by its Founder and Artistic director Serge Cajfinger, the collection is a summary of what has defined the fashion house’s spirit since that day in 1988 when Serge Cajfinger created his own brand of high-end ready-to-wear. He gave it the name of his aunt, Paule, and baptized it Ka in honor of his last name: Cajfinger. “Inspired by the years when I myself was 30,” said founder Serge Cajfinger. “A hymn to love, sensuality, freedom, and the joy of living. I had a wonderfully good time recreating the festive spirit that reigned at Studio 54 in New York, at the Palace, or at the Bains-

I added the graphic style I love from Greece, without forgetting the masculine-feminine theme or the little black dress, a must-have for every wardrobe.” English photographer Charlotte Wales embodies this Paule Ka woman and the communicative joy of living is the famous supermodel and Czech actress, Karolina Kurkova. The extreme refinement is inspired by the influential and sophisticated women of today, creating the world of tomorrow. A fusion between romance and glamour, the collection displays a rare freshness and modernity inspired by the fashion icons and muses of the ‘Palace’ years. Without a doubt, these first ‘it’ girls of the twentieth century, have elevated the eclectic and avant-garde vision of fashion and lifestyle. As would a painter, INGIE Paris plays on the vivacity of colours, the delicacy of textures and the extravagance of forms and proportions to dress women with sculptural creations as captivating as works of art. The flower, pink and gold remain central to this Summer collection, signatures of the house. An oversized, multi-coloured print on the top of a long,

INGIE Paris has a keen eye for embellishments, doubled with an exceptional technical mastery for the structure of every garment by playing on aerial volumes. Organza balloon sleeves, covered with Swarovski crystal embroidery, bring depth to a jumpsuit with a sequined collar lapel, whilst the wavy sleeves of a mini-dress flare out in duchess pink, dressed with extra-large ruffles to create roundness and movement. ingieparis.com

STREET REBEL The Fall/Winter 2018 Collection takes the John Varvatos ethos to the streets.
Injected with the vitality of downtown New York, the lineup reveals an emotive concept with an effortlessly cool execution. Juxtaposing the strength of a well-built foundation with the unrestricted movements of an on-the-pulse underground, the 2.0 man underscores his subversive virtues with a laidback confidence. As his sense of liberation builds, these dichotomies unite, creating a fresh, contemporary message that rises above today’s congested cultural landscape. The result is a look of ease and comfort with a new sense of rebellion — iconic styles, revamped by street influence. Starting from the debut look, inventive layering dominates the collection with an unwavering sense of tossed-together elegance. In a range of nutmeg hues, soft winter whites and neutral sandy tones, luxe washed velvets are worn with
084-085 John Varvatos D42.indd 84
soft, saturated leathers and abstract-print cashmere sweaters, creating richly-textured, but not-tooprecious looks. In textured combinations of suede and leather, pumped-up trainers make an impactful point of difference — bringing the collection a well-leisured dose of street-inspired vibes. This relationship between slouchy-sleek and sophistication is showcased throughout, as evident in marled-wool socks and luxe wool-and-cotton-blend training pants. Styling remains perfectly-imperfect from start to finish. Footwear forgoes slim, narrow designs for chunky, yet streamlined profiles and built-up soles, giving a thought-through heft that nicely matches when teamed with oversized garments. johnvarvatos.com

Boutique Experience
The most luxurious shopping destinations from around the world.
Henry Jacques Dubai Its first boutique in the Middle East, the opening of Henry Jacques’ breathtaking space, housed within the new Fashion Avenue extension of The Dubai Mall, is a realisation of countless years of uncompromised dedication to great perfumery, and a commitment to honour its strong, long-lived ties to the region. The unique style of the new Middle Eastern flagship boutique embodies the visionary spirit that underlines Henry Jacques’ standing as one of the most revered perfume houses ever. Designed by Christophe Tollemer, esteemed French architect and Henry Jacques’ Artistic Director, it is a haven of scents inspired by an 18th century French castle. By bringing to life beautiful yet often forgotten crafts, the boutique gracefully blends the illustriousness of the past with modern-day elegance and charm. Visitors are first welcomed in an exquisite lounge covered in antique stones and abstract art pieces creating striking contrast. A comfortable sitting area offers guests the opportunity to discover the Henry Jacques ‘Classiques’ collection, the core of the maison’s universe made up of fifty signature fragrances, as well as other offerings and accessories. Continuing through the space to the heart of the boutique, one finds a tall lit panel - a symbol of the Henry Jacques laboratory - surrounded on either side by two astonishing circular perfume organs. A graceful foyer separates the Private Lounge from the rest of the boutique. This secluded room, where lies the most precious collections and where special editions and bespoke perfume offerings are presented, is devoted to those with true passion.

The entire boutique was conceived and assembled in France, then packed and reassembled in Dubai by Henry Jacques’ specialist design team, guaranteeing the beauty of uncompromised French craftsmanship. Tollemer has created a sanctuary where one can forget the passing of hours and dive into the infinite allurement of great perfumery. The Henry Jacques boutique is the second stand-alone boutique in the world, following on from the recent opening in Singapore and a longer presence at Harrod’s London. parfums-henry-jacques.com

Richard Mille New York City Located at 46 East 57th Street, in the heart of Manhattan, the 4,200-square-foot flagship becomes the ninth Richard Mille boutique in the Americas and its largest in the world. A two-story oasis of sleek contemporary design, bathed in abundant natural light, the boutique represents a new architectural standard for the luxury brand. Mr. Mille and John Simonian, CEO of Richard Mille Americas, started the search for the ideal boutique location in New York a decade ago. As it turned out, the property they ultimately selected did not even exist 10 years ago. Today, the New York flagship resides on a stretch of 57th Street that has since gained the moniker “Billionaire’s Row,” thanks to the development of ultra-luxury residential skyscrapers in the vicinity. The extreme technicity and artistry that defines

Richard Mille timepieces is also evident in every element of the boutique, starting with the 30-foothigh glass façade that is visible a city block away. The two-story transparent wall is illuminated by 156 feet of LED lights, to create a glowing presence at the foundation of the tallest residential tower in the Western Hemisphere. Twenty-four massive panels of glass—totaling 37,000 pounds are individually engraved and arranged three-deep to form an ethereal sculpture based on Richard Mille’s RM 008 Tourbillon movement. Itself an engineering feat, the façade required the development of metal cladding that could hold the panels in place, including 13 tons of glass suspended from the ceiling. The New York boutique was designed by Richard Mille’s Paris-based in-house team, and constructed by New York-based TPG Architecture, and Viridis of Norwalk, Connecticut. richardmille.com

Delvaux Milan The oldest fine leather luxury goods Maison in the world has chosen the Capital of Fashion for its first Italian opening, with a jewel of a boutique, located in via Bagutta 12, in the heart of the Fashion Quarter. The project is designed by Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, Milanese Studio which since 2012 has been taking care of the Delvaux boutiques’ design worldwide. The concept uses the language of interior decoration to tell the brand history with a narrative capacity which interprets the context, the characteristics and culture of each city. Each address corresponds to a unique boutique, in which the Delvaux universe gives life to an intimate, personal dialogue between the Maison’s creations and the stupendous museumlike quality decorative works of art. The location of the new Milanese boutique is the recently restored Palazzo Reina. The concept is characterised by an unheard-of mingling between elements of twentieth century Milanese design and references to Belgian creativity. The result is a distinctive place, created at the same time as a celebration of Delvaux, of Belgitude and of the city of Milan. The boutique extends over 200 sqm and is subdivided in a series of salons of both different dimensions and aesthetic atmospheres: ample spaces alternate with other more intimate ones, where noble materials and neutral colours recall the delicate luxury and refinery of the Delvaux creations. Right from the entrance the visitor can

breathe a mix of history and the contemporary, in a space in which every element acts as a spokesperson to a story. Starting out from the first room, where marble panels are placed on the walls which cite and celebrate the typical entrances of twentieth century Milanese palaces. As in the second room, where the undulating shapes of the iconic Delvaux boutique wardrobe stand out: normally always in white plaster, here it appears in Macassar ebony. A work of artisan excellence of the Van der Kelen school in Bruxelles - unique in the world in teaching the traditional decorative picture technique - the covering has been handpainted on-site by two of its scholars and the school’s director. The result is a unique piece, a surprising trompe l’oeil, which enhances a historical Piero Portaluppi wardrobe. The great walled bookcase characterizes the third room: five metres tall, it is inspired by an iconic 1960s building, designed by Luigi Caccia Dominioni in Piazza Carbonari in Milan. delvaux.com

01 Emily’s art is inspired from UAE and her travels around the world 02 Emily Gordon 03 Found objects are often incorporated into the artworks 04 Her works have often been compared to jewellery because of the way they sparkle
Artist Emily Gordon draws inspiration from nearly four decades of living in the UAE.
05 The pieces and Emily’s art evolve over time
You’ve witnessed the evolution of UAE’s art scene firsthand. What would you say are the biggest changes in its art movement or community? The biggest game changer to the UAE art scene has been the introduction of government support for the arts. It changed the entire landscape and sparked an interest in art among so many more people than in previous decades.
You created your own unique art style. How long did that journey take you? Was there an “aha” moment?
02
102-104 Emily Artist D42.indd 103
From where do you draw inspiration for your art pieces? A lot of inspiration comes from the UAE and my travels. However, everything inspires me. I am particularly interested in salvaging the things people throw away and incorporating them into my artwork.
Can you take us through your creative process? What do you start with, and how do you decide the next step in terms of material, colors, etc.?
Making art is a constant evolution. You might say every new piece has an “aha” moment. When you take a commission, you almost always come up blank at the start. Then, something clicks. That’s when you start to figure out how to work with the theme using your style and media.
It all starts with the brief as most of my pieces are commissioned. Often, clients know exactly what they want, and I make it using my unique method. Most GCC clients, on the other hand, give me great freedom to create what I think suits the space. Obviously, I vastly prefer the latter. My process takes a very long time, and pieces evolve with it, so I very rarely begin any work with any ironclad plan or strategy.
What materials do you prefer to use while creating?
What was the most demanding piece you have ever worked on?
I always like to use a blowtorch, resin, gold leaf, encaustic wax, spray paint, baubles, Omani jewelry, and other found objects.
A 24-piece commission from Doha with a very tight turnaround and an ever-changing brief. It was frustrating, but I got it done in 10 months.

How many exhibitions have you had or participated in so far? Are there any planned for the near future? More than I can count and probably more than I can imagine!
What does art mean to you? Art clearly pays the bills and keeps me out of trouble… Seriously though, it’s taken me some time to figure out the space that art occupies in my life. It began as a hobby, grew into a profession, and now I understand it more as a calling—I just have to make it.
If you could be remembered for only one of your artworks, which one would it be and why? My artwork has been described by some as “gems.” You might even think of them as jewelry because they sparkle, shine, and absolutely command attention when viewers are in sight of them. So, like gems and jewelry, my work is like a collection, and you can’t have just one nor should you be expected to pick favorites. They are all oneof-a-kind. If I had to pick a favorite though, it might be one that I did for a VIP executive airplane. It’s fun to think of that sucker flying all around the world! emodart.com 03 04

Arabian Treasures Explore the history of the Arabian Peninsula with “Roads of Arabia” at the Louvre Abu Dhabi
02
The Louvre Abu Dhabi is currently hosting an acclaimed exhibition exploring the rich history of the region through archaeological and cultural artefacts from Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Roads of Arabia: Archaeological Treasures of Saudi Arabia will run until 16th February 2019. First exhibited in 2010, it is one of the most renowned Saudi exhibitions on a global scale, seen by over five million visitors worldwide. It explores five chapters in the history of the Arabian Peninsula, spanning early prehistory settlements; maritime exploration; caravan trading routes that linked the region with Asia, Mesopotamia and the Mediterranean; routes of holy pilgrimage emerging in the 7th century CE; and the social and economic developments between the 14th and 16th centuries that set the stage for the modern-day region. Dr. Souraya Nouraim, Scientific, Curatorial and Collection Management Director at Louvre Abu Dhabi explains the significance of the exhibition’s title: “From overland camel caravans and maritime trading routes to paths walked by religious

pilgrims, the roads of Arabia have always been of vital importance to economic development, early settlement and the exchange of ideas, customs, and cultures across the region and beyond. These roads are the thread of this exhibition, which presents a journey retracing exchanges, circulation, and encounters in the Arabian Peninsula.” For the first time, the exhibition will also feature rare pieces from the UAE, including a pearl found in Umm al Quwain dating from 5500-5300 BCE; a stone decorated with a wild camel from the late 3rd millennium BCE; and remarkable pieces 1st millennium BCE pieces from Saruq al Hadid and Julfar. These will be displayed alongside significant artefacts from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, including outstanding funerary Neolithic stela; a 3rd-century BCE bronze statue head; a 1stcentury BCE gold funerary mask from Eastern Province; a door of the Kaaba dating to 1355, and a key of the Kaaba. louvreabudhabi.ae

If you ever find yourself in the City of Dreams, Macau, be sure to take in a performance of ‘The House of Dancing Water’, a US$ 250 million breathtaking water-based show which tells an epic spectacular love story that transcends time and space. Created and directed by the world’s greatest show maker, Franco Dragone, the show draws creative inspiration from Chinese culture. It tells the story of a fisherman whose boat gets sucked into a whirlpool which transports him to a place and time of legends. The show is presented in a purpose-built theatre which contains one of the most spectacular commercial pools in the world, holding up to approximately 17 million litres of water, which is more than five Olympic-sized swimming pools. It features approximately 239 automated fountains, some of which rise to 18 metres. Live music during the show is performed by four musicians playing drums and percussion; keyboard; guitar and Erhu. The superb cast of 90 international performance artists and
professional divers take physical performance to its ultimate limits through combat, wit, creativity, incredible expertise and agility. Over the course of the show, they use over 400 costumes; 275 pairs of specially created water proof shoes; 90 individual wigs with over 13 hair designs; and water proof make up specially imported from France. Over 15,000 individual pieces of Swarovski crystals make up the diamond-like buttons and pearls on the performers’ costumes which include over 500 belt buckles and are also adorned with over 110,680 studs or metallic nails. A true feast for the senses, ‘The House of Dancing Water’ will take audiences on an awe-inspiring journey through the heights and depths of human emotions from the abyss of sadness and anger, to the heights of desire and the summit of joy, between the cliffs of fear to a glorious resolution where love triumphs over hate and its sinister forces. thehouseofdancingwater.com

Land of the Blue Sky Mongolia’s vast expanses of untouched landscapes, clear rivers, and spectacular valleys offer wanderers a world of adventures, unexpected encounters, and unique experiences. By Mona Jumaan
All images © Mona Jumaan
Renowned for being the Land of the Blue Sky, it is one of the last patches of unspoiled beauty left on earth. A landlocked country perched between the hot Gobi Desert in the south and cold mountains in the north and west, Mongolia is the quintessential travel destination for those who dare to stray off the beaten path. Mongolia is sparsely populated with more horses than people. Its landscape is dominated by cold windy steppes and high-altitude desert. Almost 40% of the population lives in the capital Ulaanbaatar, the coldest capital in the world (-36 to -40 °C), while the rest lead a nomadic life herding livestock across the vast meadows of the country. Western Mongolia, more commonly known as the Altai region, is home to one of the world’s last surviving nomadic cultures, the Ethnic Kazakhs. Their culture and challenging way of life remain mostly unchanged since the time of Genghis Khan. The Kazakhs live in traditional tents known as gers and move with their families and flocks from one location to another according to the seasons. The gers are round and lined with animal fur and felt to retain heat during the harsh nights all year round.

TRAVEL
Their daily lives revolve around herding and milking their animals, cooking, and making traditional yoghurt drink, tea, and bread. This routine is repeated day in and day out. To welcome visitors, which are usually few and far between, hosts normally offer a bowl of hot milk tea and some traditional food, which consists of some dough with butter or cheese. The type of milk used for the tea depends on the animals they have at the time. It is brewed with salt and butter, which is very unique and ideally suited to their way of living. One of the highlights of the Altai region is the Golden Eagle Festival, which is arranged by locals to preserve Kazakh heritage and culture. People come from around the world to attend the annual event, which showcases the talent of the local eagle breeders and their birds of prey. Wearing traditional costumes “Buryat and fur coats made of marmot, fox, or wolf skins caught by their prized birds, Kazakhs on horseback demonstrate their skills with Golden Eagles hovering on their arms.

You will see these Golden eagles soaring through the air at speeds of up to 200mph at the commands of their proud owners. Truly a sight to behold! In addition, the Kazahks enjoy traditional horse racing, archery, and a unique sport called Bushkashi, which is a goatskin tug of war on horseback. While the benefits of eagle hunting have decreased in the evermodernising world, the Kazakhs living in Western Mongolia have preserved the tradition and still use eagles instead of rifles to hunt, as it is seen as the highest form of art and dedication. Moving to the south of Mongolia means crossing from the craggy snow covered peaks of the Altai Mountains to the smooth and expansive Khongor Sand Dunes. It is one of the largest and most breath-taking sand dunes zones in the world, stretching over 120km. It is known as the singing dunes because you can hear the movement of the fine sand as the wind blows across the desert. If you think climbing a mountain is challenging, wait
till you try climbing a sand dune. The sand is so soft and fine that your shoes sink into it with every step you take. You can only step back in awe and wonder how the inhabitants survive and thrive in this challenging environment. A camel trek in Mongolia is all the more special since the breed of camels found here are so rare. While one-hump camels are common all over Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and North America, the two-hump Bactrian camels, are native to Mongolia and aren’t found en masse anywhere else. Their large footpads are filled with fat to help them walk easily over this rigorous terrain. Moreover, Bactrian camels sometimes travel over the snows found in Siberia. To catch the sunrise or a sunset, one has to trek up to the higher points of the dunes, which can reach up to 800 metres (2,624 feet). However, most areas are around 300-400 metres, which is high enough to see the country’s famed natural beauty. A Mongolian sunrise or sunset is a spectacular display of Alpen
glows and vibrant colours that are very unique to the area. These glows and colours linger well into the night and are aided by the fact that light pollution in this area of the world is nearly non-existent. As a result, the Gobi Desert is a famous location for stargazing and a haven for astrophotographers. At night, The Milky Way and all-star constellations brighten the sky in an extraordinary light show with stunning landscapes in the background. All in all, Mongolia is a fascinating country that offers a lot of activities for the explorer in you. There are numerous adventure companies that offer visitors a chance to experience the Mongolian way of life, including traveling on horseback, sleeping in gers, sharing camel curd with the locals, and much more. Mongolian people have a simple, friendly disposition and are wonderful hosts. So the next time you are looking for a spot on the map with pristine beauty, crystal clear lakes, tall mountains, and undulating grasslands, remember Mongolia!

City of Design Home to numerous art galleries, showrooms, and high-end fashion stores, Miami’s Design District transformed from a pineapple farm in the Buena Vista neighborhood to one of the most iconic art and luxury destinations in the world today.
01
120-123 Miami D42.indd 121
T.V. Moore, the owner of the land on which that pineapple farm existed, built the historic Moore Furniture Building in the 1920’s, one of the first stores in the U.S. dedicated strictly to furniture. By the 1980s and early-1990s, the area had fallen to urban decay, and it wasn’t until the late 1990s, and early 2000s, that art and design stores began opening up in the Design District. The District’s new identity was born in the 1990s, when developer Craig Robbins began transforming the neighborhood into the cultural, must-visit haven that it is today.

DESTINATION
Perhaps the most famous aspect of the Design District are the various art installations. The most popular of the area’s installations is Buckminster Fuller’s ‘Fly’s Eye Dome’, a 24-foot Monohex geodesic dome. Inspired by the eye of a fly, Fuller designed the dome as his idea of the affordable, portable home of the future, with windows and openings in the dome to hold solar panels and systems for water collection, thus allowing the dome to be self-sufficient. It was originally designed in 1977, but was later reconstructed with modern, state-of-the-art materials in 2011, and now sits in the center of Palm Court, shading the entrance to its parking garage. Overlooking Buckminster Fuller’s masterpiece is the formidable fiberglass sculpture by French artist Xavier Veilhan, who rendered the larger-than-life architect Le Corbusier in a scale befitting of his stature. Le Corbusier was an impressive force in pioneering what would eventually define modern architecture. His career, spanning five decades, has left an indelible mark on art and architecture since his death in 1965. Other notable installations include Zaha Hadid’s “Elastika”, a site-specific installation that replicates tension between the four-story building’s layered mezzanines, and Konstantin Grcic’s Netscape: a 24-seat “net” of swings hanging from a modular six-point, star-shaped frame, all made out of steel, fiberglass and polypropylene.
122
The Design District also combines art with functionality, as can be seen by 1111 Lincoln Road, a parking garage resembling a house of cards. Located at the western end of the Lincoln Road Mall at the intersection with Alton Road, the garage can house around 300 cars. The design was led by Herzog & de Meuron partner Christine Binswanger. This openair structure with no exterior walls was constructed around buttresses and cantilevers that features floor heights varying from 8 to 34 feet. Elevators and a central, winding staircase take drivers to and from their cars. A glassed-in high-fashion boutique, Alchemist, sits on an edge of the fifth floor, while the street level features retail space. The District is also home to many flagship luxury stores including Hermès, Tom Ford, Louis Vuitton, Christian Louboutin, Prada, Celine and more. In 2009, the first luxury retailer opened in the Design District, Christian Louboutin, marking a new era for the Design District, as a number of prominent brands followed suit. One of the standout designs is Tom Ford’s flagship store, which features a pleated concrete façade referencing bold Art Deco motifs. Glass fibre-reinforced concrete panels were moulded into a geometric formation and then applied to the facade, creating a serrated finish that contrasts with the smooth, angled sections around the entrance to the store and shop windows.
The Design District has a range of art galleries worth visiting. Led by French gallerist Bernard Markowicz, who made a name for himself at New York’s Opera Gallery, Markowicz Fine Art is home to eye-catching street art, digital art, lithography, traditional painting and more by countless artists; including, but not limited to: Francis Bacon, Mr., Connie McSilver, Alex Katz and Boudro. Another gallery, Oliver Sanchez’s Swampspace, offers both a place for art exhibitions and local artist studios, showcasing everything from the student work at New World School of the Arts and Design Architecture Senior High (DASH), to major Miami artists, like Bhakti Baxter and Daniel Arsham. As an alternative gallery, Swampspace is recognized by the Knight Foundation for its ongoing contributions to the art world. Home of Rosa and Carlos de la Cruz’s private collection, the de la Cruz Collection Contemporary Art Space features contemporary art and supports artists in residency programs. When you take a walk through the neighborhood’s low and high-rise buildings, it’s hard to miss the vibrant murals plastered on their walls. One mural, “Vortex”, resembles a slow spiral that figuratively “draws a curious viewer in.” Created by Michael Rock, Susan Sellers and Georgianna Stout, it is appropriately painted on the outside of a collaborative studio of designers and creative minds who spend most of their time doing critical thinking and research.

John Baldessari painted two murals – Fun (Part 1) and Fun (Part 2) – both of which depict people during their pursuit of leisure. Part 1 is a painting of individuals playing games around a swimming pool, while Part 2 shows a smiling woman trying to balance on a beach ball. Both pictures are a throwback to a simpler time, likely in Miami; noticeable by its sunny scenes, one-piece bathing suits, fixed hairstyles and the fact that they are both painted entirely in black and white. One of the most photogenic neighborhoods in Miami, The Design District is a magnet for artists and creatives, and with its impressive lineup of galleries, design showrooms, acclaimed restaurants, and ultra-high end luxury retailers, it’s bound to attract and appease all who are passionate about creativity and luxury.

The Beautiful Island Renowned for its towering sea cliffs, marblewalled gorges, and tropical forests, Taiwan is a favorite for tourist destinations, and its capital city, Taipei, is a vibrant cultural and entertainment hub amid the island’s impressive scenic sites.
01
124-126 Taiwan D42.indd 125
Although Taiwan occupies less than one percent of the Earth’s land, it is home to a diverse landscape, ranging from winding gorges and misty mountains to hot springs and tropical beaches. Portuguese sailors en route to Japan in the late 16th century deemed Taiwan “Ilha Formosa,” or beautiful island. Its cultural legacy is equally rich, combining Dutch, Chinese, Japanese, aboriginal and modern influences, and it’s a destination that offers something for every traveler. Taiwan lies on the Tropic of Cancer, and its general climate is marine tropical. The entire island experiences hot, humid weather from June through September. During the winter, the northeast experiences steady rain, while the central and southern parts of the island are mostly sunny. Previously the tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 is one of Taiwan’s most impressive buildings and well worth a visit. The 728-ton mass damper that allows the building to survive the island’s many
earthquakes is an amazing piece of engineering and can be seen from various points within the building. Another major attraction is the National Palace Museum. Home to one of the largest collections of Chinese imperial artifacts, the National Palace Museum offers a look into imperial China’s past. The many thousands of items on display were rescued by Chiang Kai-Shek’s government as they fled mainland China during the cultural revolution. Taiwan is also home to natural wonders, such as Taroko National Park, where you can take the trail to the Eternal Spring Shrine which features a stunning waterfall. Another beautiful national park with natural wonders is Yushan National Park, which is the setting for the country’s tallest mountain along with several other picturesque peaks such as Sanqingshan. Taiwan’s Sun Moon Lake is its largest body of water and a great destination for short trips. Scores of hotels are located around the lake, which is busy with yachts

The guestrooms and suites offers a residential ambience with scenic views of Taipei 101, the mountains and Taipei city, while the Grand Club rooms provide added luxury and personalized services. The spacious suites on the top floor of the hotel provide exclusive accommodations. Another great option is the Millennium Hotel

Residents at Millennium Hotel Taichung can explore the Taichung City Hall, Fulfillment Amphitheatre and National Taichung Theatre – an architectural marvel described as ‘a piece of opera’. There’s also no shortage of exceptional shopping destinations with Far Eastern Top City department store, Shin Kong Mitsukoshi and one of the most famous night markets in Taiwan - Feng Chia Night Market, all nearby. Tourists can look forward to staying at The Valletta. Bulgari Hotel London On 28th May 2012, the Bulgari Hotel, London, opened in the heart of central London’s most prestigious area, Knightsbridge, as the first brand new luxury hotel build in the city for 40 years. The Bulgari Hotel, London, pays tribute to Bulgari’s silversmith origins and Britain’s noble manufacturing traditions with an understated, elegant design concept with silver forming the underlying theme of the design. The sleek architecture and refined interiors are designed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners, with Squire and Partners as the local architect, coupling the Bulgari glamour and heritage with sustainable design features and state of the art technology. Many of the furnishings and textiles throughout the hotel are made exclusively for Bulgari crafted by Italian manufacturers. The 85 rooms and suites feature exquisite detailing throughout, such as custom made silk curtains with patterns inspired by some of the classic Bulgari jewellery designs, and bed side table lamps by Bulgari’s silver candlesticks. The silver theme continues right through the hotel into the restaurant and bar with hand crafted Italian detailing such as two stunning handcrafted solid silver Bulgari chandeliers in the Ballroom, creating a dramatic centrepiece. Il Bar has been conceived to become the heart of the hotel’s social scene and the perfect place to enjoy La Dolce Vita with an Italian aperitivo at the bar, whilst in the luxury surrounds of the hotel’s Edward Sahakian Cigar Shop & Sampling Lounge rare and vintage cigars can be sampled and purchased. Inspired by the many years Alain Ducasse spent

visiting the vibrant food markets in Italy and Provence, Rivea London offers French and Italian cuisine in a chic, convivial and relaxed setting with informal yet impeccable service. Alain Ducasse is championing his protégé Chef Alexandre Nicolas who is at the helm of the restaurant. Open exclusively to day spa guests, members and guests of the hotel, the 2,000sqm spa spread over two floors of the Bulgari Hotel has been crafted from onyx, oak and Vicenza stone. Highlights of the spa include 11 private treatment rooms and one double spa suite, complete with its own steam room, Jacuzzi and private treatment room; a 25m swimming pool, created from Vicenza stone and featuring a shimmering green and gold mosaic; and a 150m² fitness area with a fully-equipped, state of the art, Technogym gymnasium. Hotel de Berri Paris Owned by the Dokhan family, Hôtel de Berri offers eclectic, bold and refined designs devoted to the Parisian way of life. Meticulously styled by designer and artistic director Philippe Renaud, Hôtel de Berri features 75 guestrooms, including 35 suites, as well as Italian restaurant Le Schiap and cocktail bar Le Bizazz. The hotel’s preserved 3,000 square metre landscaped garden is a precious legacy of the building’s illustrious past. Situated on Rue de Berri, one of the most sought-after addresses in Paris that has been home to aristocrats, royals and prominent leaders in French society since the 19th century, Hôtel de Berri draws inspiration from the trailblazers of the French Decorative Arts period including painters, designers and stylists from Coco Chanel to Salvador Dalí, with interior designs reflecting the “Art de Vivre” ethos made famous in the heart of Paris. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the property was a private mansion for luminaries including Princess Mathilde and fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli, Hôtel de Berri today aims to tell its storied history through the design of its rooms and public spaces. Following the demolition of the property’s private residences at 18, 20 and 22 Rue de Berri, including the home once inhabited by fashion designer and 1930’s icon Elsa Schiaparelli, a vast office building designed by architect and city planner Maurice Novarina was constructed on the site. This unique building reveals an expressive, dream-like Parisian world within. Hôtel de Berri is the only Parisian hotel to feature a Novarina façade. This unassuming and neutral exterior, spanning 54 metres in length, is the gateway to a magical interior full of aesthetic paradoxes.
08

From surfaces to colours and textures, the curious and quirky design elements of Hôtel de Berri are a deliberate step away from traditional hotel design. Wisdom, eclecticism and humour are common threads that run throughout the design of Hôtel de Berri. The Dokhan family, together with Philippe Renaud, have carved out several different decorative themes and ambiances that present vibrant colours, detailed parchments, ancient Chinese furniture, wrought-iron lamps, sketches and paintings. Hôtel de Berri’s guest rooms and suites are divided into six categories: Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, Signature Suites, Prestige Suites, Berri Suites and the Suite Parisienne. Marble bathrooms feature heated flooring, Skinjay aromatherapy showers, TOTO toilets and luxury Diptyque products. Throughout, the hotel showcases elite pieces of Parisian art and interior design. Giacometti, Jean-Michel Frank, Madeleine Castaing, Henri Samuel and David Hicks are just some of the featured artists. The interiors also include subtle references to fashion designers such as Jeanne Lanvin, Marie-Laure de Noailles, Coco Chanel and, naturally, Elsa Schiaparelli, to whom this address was home for forty years. The Suite Parisienne, in all its neoantique glory, is Hôtel de Berri’s Presidential Suite, boasting 115 square metres. The three Berri Suites, each spanning over 100 square metres, use similar references to illustrious previous owners and visitors, allowing for a new discovery around every corner. From the Sculpture Room, to the vast Suite Parisienne, and from Le Schiap restaurant to Le Bizazz cocktail bar, Hôtel de Berri offers a timeless sanctuary for international travellers and local Parisians alike. marriott.com/HoteldeBerri

Edern Restaurant Paris Inspired by the simplicity and authenticity of epicurean dining from the city and around the world, Edern revolutionizes the approach to crafting Parisian gastronomy. Chef Jean-Edern Hurstel discovered his passion for cooking very young. Beginning his culinary journey as an apprentice for the famous chef Claude Legras, at Parc des Eaux-Vives, Jean-Edern climbed his way to the top, step by step. At Lucas Carlton restaurant in Paris, he learnt with Alain Senderens to marry flavours flawlessly. With Alain Passard at L’Arbege (3 Michelin stars), he acquired the respect for product and the art of cooking.
Edern welcomes you to a gray, champagne and copper decor offering a restaurant and cocktail bar to guests who share a love of dining and partying. Beige leather armchairs and marbled banquettes are set against explosive street-art style pop paintings, while patrons get a full view of the chef’s team as they cook. At night, the DJ’s turntables come out to continue the celebration. Edern blends the electric energy of a party with the excellence of gourmet Parisian flavours. Take the sculptural staircase and discover the different and softly lit ambiance of the bar. Cigar
aficionados will enjoy the Cigar Lounge, while others will be moving to the beats of the DJs. The cuisine at Edern uses authentic and carefully selected products thanks to the close relationships with reputable and experienced suppliers. With a menu that celebrates love of food, French classics feature throughout the menu, albeit with a modern twist: seabream carpaccio with citrus fruits, crispy langoustines with a basil sauce, and an excellent selection of French meats. edern-restaurant.com

Uoharu Tokyo Famed Tokyo-based seafood izakaya Uoharu has made the leap overseas to open its first location outside of Japan in Central, Hong Kong. Uoharu sources its premium seafood from Yama-Haru, the largest wholesaler in Tsukiji Market. The Hong Kong location upholds the “less is more” ethos of the Japanese flagship establishment, using the authentic preparation and cooking techniques to bring out the natural flavours of the ingredients, allowing Hong Kong’s gourmands to enjoy the best of heartwarming izakaya fare in the heart of the city. True to its commitment to izakaya cuisine, Uoharu ships Tsukiji Market’s freshest offerings daily from its dedicated 200-year-old family-owned wholesaler, Yamagi, which is now helmed by 18thgeneration owner Haruo Yamazaki. Utilizing the best ingredients, Uoharu preserves their inherent flavours by using only the most original cooking techniques. The focus at Uoharu is on robatayaki, whereby diners pick from a quality array of seafood and vegetables laid out before them, which the chef cooks over an open grill. The menu changes daily to ensure the optimum freshness of the ingredients. The traditional izakaya drinking establishment is where friends congregate after a long day of work,
allowing for a more relaxed atmosphere in which to enjoy hearty fare. At Uoharu, Hongkong diners will be able to experience the unique ambience of a kaizen izakaya, as if they were in a neighbourhood restaurant in Japan themselves. The Central location welcomes gourmands with a small Japanese-style entrance, requiring all who enter to duck their heads and thus creating a space in which everyone is equal. The interior features a robatayaki bar counter, sashimi bar and drinks bar, allowing the chefs showing off their culinary prowess and fresh ingredients for all to see. Comfort is key, with brick walls, concrete flooring and recycled wooden table creating an approachable and unpretentious dining space. Long wooden tables accommodate larger groups, allowing them to enjoy the delicacies without constraint. Elsewhere, the hand-written menu and artisanal utensils were carefully conceived to match the honest cooking methods. From the food to the dinnerware, and the interior to the staff uniforms, Uoharu aims to convey the understated yet tasteful ambience of an authentic Japanese izakaya. fb.com/uoharusan

Devilishly Delicious Devilishly Delicious Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen restaurant makes its fiery debut in Dubai, marking the second global outpost and first-of-its-kind in the Middle East.
Located at the brand-new Caesars Palace Bluewaters Dubai, the destination dining experience is inspired by the international hit television show, and serves the same world-class cooking that made its Las Vegas counterpart a runaway success when it launched in January 2018. Created by the multi-Michelin starred chef, TV star and all-round global celebrity Gordon Ramsay, the experiential and immersive destination restaurant is a must-see city attraction for tourists and GCC residents alike. Masterfully designed to create maximum drama, guests are transported to the studio set via interior flourishes such as the signature fiery pitchfork direct from the set and Hell’s Kitchen iconic “H” to pitchfork symbols cleverly featured in custom-designed, laser cut screen partitions and gold monogram wallpaper. Every detail, from the perfect plating to make

each dish look just the same as on the television to stamped cutlery sourced direct from Las Vegas, make guests feel as if they are part of the hit series. With design features engaging all senses and a nod to both the red and blue teams featured on the show, the dynamic and bustling kitchen is the centerpiece of this unique eatery to be enjoyed and appreciated from every seat in the house. Chefs and cooks are kitted out in the exact Hell’s Kitchen show uniforms – red and blue jackets with coordinating bandanas – but with a key difference. While in the series outfits denoted male or female teams, at Hell’s Kitchen Dubai the jacket colours showcase which team member prepares what; team blue, is on cold starters and desserts, while the reds prepare the hot starters and main dishes. Effortless Everywhere The ‘Architecture of Luxury’ comes into its own in the new Rolls-Royce Cullinan.
The Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Rolls-Royce as it’s never seen before. Making luxury Effortless, Everywhere engendered an evolution in RollsRoyce’s approach to creating an authentic RollsRoyce SUV. The most obvious sign of this was the radical rear of Cullinan. For the first time a RollsRoyce has an opening tailgate, called ‘The Clasp’. In a nod to the era when luggage was mounted on the exterior of the motor-car, so the occupants did not travel with their belongings, the rear profile of Cullinan is a two-part, ‘D-Back’ format, with the bustle denoting the place of the luggage. ‘The Clasp’ opens and closes in its two sections automatically at the touch of the key fob button. The rear passenger compartment of Cullinan has been designed to offer the best seat in the house for the owner’s particular needs. Two rear configurations are offered – Lounge Seats or Individual Seats. The Lounge Seat configuration is the more functional of the two options. With space for three passengers in the rear, it will likely be more attractive to families.
162-165 Rolls Royce D42.indd 162
The rear seats also fold down – a first for RollsRoyce. Rolls-Royce’s investment in making the rear of Cullinan effortlessly and ultimately practical has the side benefit of offering a loading length longer than a Range Rover Vogue Extended Wheelbase. A very practical Rolls-Royce indeed. Cullinan awakes at the touch of the unlock button on the Bespoke key, or indeed by simply reaching out to its beautifully tactile stainless steel door handle. It lowers itself by 40mm to make entry effortless as the iconic Rolls-Royce coach doors stand open to welcome driver and passengers to their adventure. A touch of the start button then elevates Cullinan 40mm to its standard, commanding ride height, placing its occupants in the perfect position from which to see the world as it drives off. All information is clearly communicated by the latest generation of digital instruments, with the displays themselves designed with clear and beautiful virtual needles, Rolls-Royce jewellery-like chaplets and clear lettering.

The central information screen is for the first time touch sensitive, allowing the driver to quickly select functions, map views and vehicle set-up whilst on the trail. This portal can still be controlled from the iconic Spirit of Ecstasy controller which nestles on the central console with the ‘OffRoad’ button, Hill Descent Control button and Air Suspension height adjustment controls. A host of other cutting-edge technology makes Rolls-Royce Cullinan the most technologically advanced car of its type in the world. Further equipment includes: Night Vision and Vision Assist including daytime and night-time Wildlife & Pedestrian warning; Alertness Assistant; a 4-Camera system with Panoramic View, all-round visibility and helicopter view; Active Cruise Control; Collision Warning; CrossTraffic Warning, Lane Departure and Lane Change Warning; an industry leading 7x3 High-Resolution Head-Up Display, WiFi hotspot, and of course the latest Navigation and Entertainment Systems. The engineering team behind Cullinan adapted the Architecture of Luxury to the design template of a high-bodied car laid down by the design team thanks to its innate adaptability. It was designed and engineered from the ground up in such a way as to be scalable to the size and weight requirements of different future Rolls-Royce models, including those with different propulsion, traction and control systems, thus underpinning the long-term future product roadmap. The all-new aluminium sub-structure delivers extraordinary car body stiffness for exceptional ‘best-in-class’ functional performance on rough terrain whilst offering better ride comfort. Inside, the cabin of Cullinan combines authentic Rolls-Royce luxury with simple, symmetrical functionality to express the car’s inherent strength. Whether the fascia and centre stack of the dashboard
or the arm rests on the doors, structural horizontal and vertical elements underpin the interior design. The seats in Cullinan have a bold, confident character, showcasing Rolls-Royce quality and craftsmanship. Designed to suit the more casual and dynamic quality of Cullinan, they feature a simple but modern horseshoe graphic which emphasises the supportive bolsters of the seat. These new seats also showcase Rolls-Royce’s mastery of leather craft as this entire backrest panel has been crafted from a single piece of leather to pick out a highly three-dimensional surface. Rolls-Royce’s celebrated Magic Carpet Ride impresses off-road as well as on-road thanks to the new lighter architecture, and the latest generation of self-levelling air suspension. Through a thorough re-engineering of the existing air suspension system – including adding larger air struts with more air volume to cushion the blows of the toughest of terrains – the strengthening of drive and prop shafts, the inclusion of drive to the front wheels as well as the back for the first time in Rolls-Royce history, and the complete reworking of the new 6.75 litre twin-turbo V12 Rolls-Royce engine to deliver just the right level of torque (850Nm) at the lowest possible revolutions (1,600rpm), the Rolls-Royce engineering team has ensured Cullinan will take owners to places no modern Rolls-Royce owner has travelled in luxury before. The final piece of the puzzle of ensuring that the Rolls-Royce Cullinan is Effortless, Everywhere is one single button. Known within Rolls-Royce as the ‘Everywhere’ button, one single push is all it takes to harness all the aforementioned peerless RollsRoyce engineering and unleash all of Cullinan’s off-road capability. rolls-roycemotorcars.com

Bentley Continental GT Almost 100 years ago, W O Bentley started a company that would change the automotive world forever. His vision was to develop not just another car, but “a fast car, a good car, a car that would be the best in its class”. This ethos has underpinned every car that Bentley has produced through almost a century of production, each model driving the brand forwards to new and greater heights. This latest generation of the Bentley Continental GT is the definition of luxury grand touring. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain, the third generation Continental GT has been launched to global acclaim. Blending the highest level of attention to detail and artistry with refinement and performance, it represents the very essence of the Bentley brand; Bentley has created the finest Grand Toured ever produced. The DNA which runs through every Continental GT began more than 65 years ago when the R-Type Continental was born. This new model stays true to its rich heritage whilst evolving to meet the needs and desires of the modern Bentley customer. This extraordinary car has already won Gold in two key categories of the prestigious German Design Awards – one of the most highly respected design competitions in the world – where it was stated by the committee “Traditional craftsmanship, cutting-edge technology and aesthetics have been merged together to form an extraordinary design from this extraordinary brand”. The all-new Continental GT is a bold new
vision yet unmistakably Bentley, the latest evolution of the model since its introduction to the world in 2003. There are three core characteristics which give the new Continental inimitable classic elegance and help to define the model; the power line, haunch and swooping roofline. With its sleek lines carving a sharp new path through the air, the new Continental GT marks the beginning of a new era: one of unrivalled power, exquisite craftsmanship and cutting-edge automotive technology. The new Continental GT features clean, superformed lines and a wide, low body, evoking a sense of speed and presence. On unlocking the car, a pre-programmed sequence of exterior lighting welcomes you. To complement the car’s striking interior design, the interior mood lighting (fitted as standard) can be configured to your preference. With lighting strips created to accentuate the car’s key design lines, you can choose vibrant or muted settings in seven colours, as well as backlighting the treadplates in your chosen color. With the completely new 6.0 litre, twinturbocharged W12 engine, a step-change in technology and a truly stunning design language, the new Continental GT is completely unmatched in its class. This Bentley GT coupé is the quintessential grand tourer – phenomenally powerful, beautifully designed and exquisitely crafted. bentleymotors.com

Audi Q8 Featuring a powerful 3.0 TFSI quattro with 210 kW and mild hybrid system, the Audi Q8 combines the best of two worlds – the elegance of a four-door luxury coupe and the convenient versatility of a large SUV. The generously dimensioned interior with variable luggage compartment, state-of-theart operating and suspension technologies as well as intelligent assistance systems make the Audi Q8 a convincing companion for business and leisure. With the permanent quattro all-wheel drive and a ground clearance of up to 254 millimeters, the SUV coupe can continue when paved roads end. The Audi Q8 exudes sporty dynamics and upscale prestige like no other SUV from the brand with the four rings. 4.99 meters long, 2.00 meters wide and 1.71 meters tall, the SUV coupe is wider, shorter and lower than its Q7 sister model. With a wheelbase of nearly 3.00 meters, it offers a spacious interior that beats of its direct competitors in most relevant dimensions, including interior length and headroom. There is a three-seat system in the rear with longitudinally adjusting upon request. With the seatbacks folded down, the luggage compartment under the power rear hatch holds up to 1,755 liters. With the imposing Singleframe in octagonal design, the Audi Q8 is the new face of the Q family. The brawny radiator grille stands upright and, together with the spoiler that has been drawn toward the front and the large, highly contoured
166-175. Automotive D42.indd 171
air inlets, emphasizes the self-confident look. The elegantly sloping roofline terminates in gently inclined D-pillars and rests against the quattro blisters above the wheel arches, which house up to 22-inch wheels. Numerous details hint at the design of the original quattro. Strong contours and athletically tight surfaces convey a feeling of power, sophistication and the special dynamics of the permanent all-wheel drive. The spoiler, wheel arch trims, door trim strips and diffuser are in a contrasting color, to further emphasize the off-road look. With the MMI touch response operating concept of the new Audi Q8, nearly every function can be accessed via two large displays. The upper 10.1inch display is used for controlling the infotainment and the navigation system. The driver uses the 8.6-inch display below that for heating and air conditioning, convenience functions and text input, the latter with his or her wrist resting comfortably and ergonomically on the selector lever. Operation is swift and simple: A tactile and acoustic click confirms when a finger activates a function. In addition to all this, the natural language voice control turns the Audi Q8 into an intelligent dialog partner. Drivers can word their commands freely. The voice control can, for example, understand the sentence “I am hungry and in response suggests restaurants close by. audi.com

Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 The new Ferrari Monza SP1 and SP2 have been unveiled in occasion of the company’s Capital Market’s Day at the factory in Maranello. These limited-edition special-series cars are the first in a new segment called ‘Icona’ and draw inspiration from the most evocative Ferraris of the 1950s and feature the most advanced sports car technology available today. Aimed at dedicated clients and collectors, the Monza SP1 and SP2 reference the iconic Ferrari racing barchettas of the past, not least the 1948 166 MM, which originally inspired the name ‘barchetta’, and the 750 Monza and 860 Monza. Designed with the sole aim of winning, these uncompromising models helped build the Ferrari legend in the 1950s by delivering numerous victories in the World Sports Car Championship. The Ferrari Monza SP1 was designed as an uncompromising single-seat road car that offers a truly unique experience behind the wheel. The second configuration, the Monza SP2, thanks to the elimination of the tonneau cover and the addition of a second protective screen and a second roll-bar,
is instead a two-seater enabling the passenger to share the same driving sensations. The Monza SP1 and SP2 feature a unique design, the best weight-to-power ratio of any barchetta, thanks to the extensive use of carbon-fibre in construction, and distinctive details, such as head-and tail-lights, wheels and interior, which further enhance the cars’ exclusivity. Equipped with the most powerful engine Maranello has ever built, a 810 cv V12, they can sprint from 0-100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.9 seconds. The architecture of the two cars is based on a monolithic form with an aerodynamic wing profile where the complete absence of a roof and windscreen gave the designers the freedom to create unique proportions that would not have been possible on a traditional spider. The result is the feeling of blistering speed normally only experienced by Formula 1 drivers, which derives from the concept of a cockpit carved from the car’s very volume that wraps around the driver. A radical choice was made for the design of the
cars’ compact doors which open upwards. Equally important is the all-carbon-fibre one-piece bonnetwing assembly which is hinged at the front to showcase the imposing V12 engine once open. As with racing models, the bodyshell of both cars is made entirely from lightweight carbon-fibre. The entire interior is trimmed in the same material with a natural finish to enhance the sporty impact of the design. Weight reduction and the ‘barchetta’ configuration guarantee unique vehicle dynamics: perfectly balanced with no roll whatsoever for pure, uncompromising sports-car handling. Especially for Monza SP1 and SP2 owners Ferrari, in collaboration with two leading luxury brands, Loro Piana and Berluti, has created elegant gentlemen-driver-inspired apparel and accessories. The driver’s selection includes racing overalls, jersey, helmet, gloves, scarf and driving shoes. These feature a number of technical solutions to guarantee a comfortable fit and ensure freedom of movement while driving. ferrari.com

MB&F Horological Machine N°9 ‘Flow’ Inspired by the dynamic profiles of automotive and aviation mid-century design, Horological Machine N°9 ‘Flow’ is reminiscent of a jet engine. A highly complex titanium case in alternating polished and satin finishes encloses an equally complex manual winding movement, developed fully in house. Independent twin balance wheels beat at a leisurely 2.5Hz (18,000bph) on each flank of Horological Machine N°9, visible under elongated domes of sapphire crystal. A third pane of sapphire crystal on the central body reveals the gearbox of the HM9 engine: a planetary differential that averages the output of both balance wheels to provide one stable reading of the time. mbandf.com

My Time by Christie’s: the ultimate watch reference handbook.
19/12/2018 15:23
A true collector buys timepieces to keep and does not care what the ‘market says’. He only cares to own what he desires. It is in this spirit that the collection presented in this book - one of the most important watch collections in the world - was assembled. Each watch has a reason why it is in this collection and holds a personal link to the collector, Mr. Sandro Fratini. The 650 featured watches represent a fraction of his entire collection. Sandro Fratini represents the second generation of the Fratini family of entrepreneurs who founded the internationally renowned Italian Rifle jeans brand in 1958. At the age of eight, he received

a modest steel Longines watch for his first communion and from that moment onwards, he was hooked to the art of watchmaking. Sandro Fratini’s personal watch collection and his passion for it, led him to create a chain of boutique hotels located in Florence, Venice and soon Rome, entirely dedicated to the theme of watches. My Time, a 688-page large format ultimate reference book, has been produced with the greatest care to showcase its exceptional photographic content: it will reveal to the public a watch collection never seen before publicly. It was created by Christie’s with and for Sandro Fratini to

Artistic Impressions Exploring the art of giclee printing with Dubai-based Iraqi artist, Muhanad Al Nassiri.
At what age did you discover your passion for the arts? I wanted to be an artist from my earliest childhood days. I come from a family of doctors and artists. They were always supportive of my pursuit of a career as an artist. I worked with my uncle, Rafa Al Nassiri, who was Director of the Bahrain Center for Fine Arts. When he traveled back to Iraq, I took over the work over there. Later, I incorporated my background as an architect with my knowledge of arts into my giclee printing. I’m not the traditional artist because I don’t use a brush or pen.
How would you describe your creative process?
02
192-195 Muhanad Artist D42.indd 193
I usually depict daily life and what sparks my interest from the environment around us. I follow the steps of Orientalist artists from the 1800s and
1900s. Back then, European artists would come to the East because the art scene here was thriving. They would capture whatever place they visit in their works, whether it was towns, mosques, or other cultural elements. This is what I do. I sketch the places I visit as a form of documentation. I see myself as a new type of Orientalist.
Iraq’s old and modern history is a major part of your portfolio. How do you feel about the art movement in Iraq? Iraq is bustling with modern day artists, each one of them possessing spectacular talents. This is why there’s an enormous and diversified range of styles. I would say Iraq has the best artists in the Middle East. Their subject matter is also interesting because it stems from their love and knowledge of the rich history and civilizations of the region.

What attracted you to giclee prints? I started art prints making in 1995. At that time, I used to do etching but when I later arrived at the UAE, I realized I didn’t have enough space for that. This is when I developed my style with giclee because it’s an art form that doesn’t require large spaces. The result was also much cleaner. I developed that style by using a combination of architecture, fine arts, and art printing.
How long does it take you to finish a giclee print? And what was the longest you have ever worked on a piece? It usually takes me about 4 or 5 days to finish an artwork, with me working 12 hours each day.
The most demanding piece I have ever done was the architecture wallpaper sketch for Dubai Creek featuring boats. It took me three weeks to finish it.
December 2018
Do you have a favorite piece from your work?
influenced my style. I work with architectural sketches but I express them through my own artistic experience, so I would say it’s my own style. However, I would credit my uncle Rafa Al Nassiri and artist Mohammed Al-Shammarey with giving me the techniques that inspired my style.
My absolute favorite is the one featuring King Faisal I of Iraq riding a horse. He was the King of Iraq from 1921 to 1933 and is one of the most prominent characters in Iraqi history.
Are there any exhibitions or countries where you love to participate?
Which artists had the biggest influence on your style? There’s no particular artist that I can say
I love to showcase my work in Bahrain, Iraq, France, Italy, and Turkey. mnassiri.com
