Durrah is back with yet another offering filled to the brim with the latest and greatest in the world of luxury. Our Kingdom has never been a stranger to milestones, and in this issue, we celebrate one of the most important milestones in its history: the 50 year anniversary of its diplomacy and foreign relations. We celebrate this golden jubilee with an extensive article detailing the unique approach that Bahrain has employed over the decades to build the nation we have today. We also highlight another momentous occasion with Bapco’s launch ceremony of the modernization project of its refinery, which was held under the patronage of HRH Prime Minister Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, and in the presence of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier. Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait (BBK) opens a new chapter in its storied history of innovation with the launch of BBK Privé, a service dedicated to overseeing the finances of the bank’s most affluent clients. We talk to BBK’s Abdulrahman Saif, who gives us a deeper insight into the new service and how it sets the bank apart from the competition. We

Of course, Durrah wouldn’t be Durrah if it didn’t have its many pages featuring prominent artists, renowned chefs, luxurious shopping destinations, high-end fashion selections, and many more offerings from the world of luxury. Each issue, we hand-pick the items that no collection would be complete without, and present them to you here as your guide to a world where only the finest will do. March 2019

The Kingdom of Bahrain celebrates 50 years of Diplomacy.

The Kingdom of Bahrain’s longstanding history of foreign relations and diplomacy conveys a unique approach towards nation-building, which in many ways echoes the spirit of the country itself. An openness to the wider world has long embodied the consciousness of this island nation and is demonstrated throughout its early history. A crossroads between the East and West, records of the Kingdom of Bahrain forging relations through trade and establishing ties with ancient civilizations that extended from Mesopotamia to the European continent, were extensively documented. Cultural tolerance, an accommodating nature and worldly awareness have long been part of the Kingdom of Bahrain’s disposition and were key to facilitating international alliances, strengthening regional bonds and fostering the rich cultural framework that is still prevalent today. Emphasizing foreign affairs prior to the Kingdom of Bahrain’s formalized sovereign position in the international system helps contextualize the country’s relationships with earlier civilizations. The Kingdom of Bahrain maintained trade links from Mesopotamia to the Indus Valley since the 3rd millennium BCE. Agreements, concessions and competition for influence and power shaped certain features of foreign and diplomatic relations that continue to have relevance today.

With its flag raised proudly at the United Nations, the Kingdom of Bahrain celebrated its official position as a member of the international community in 1971. This marked an important milestone in the Kingdom’s contemporary history, one of which was realized approximately two years after the establishment of the Directorate of Foreign Affairs within the Kingdom’s government. With the Kingdom of Bahrain’s official recognition, the Directorate of Foreign Affairs transformed into the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embarked on a journey, cementing old friendships and forging new ones.

The decade following the inauguration of several Bahraini embassies, notably in the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom, marked key developments in diplomatic relations. The Kingdom of Bahrain’s contribution to the creation of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and the hosting of one of its first summits in Manama in 1983, reflect the country’s commitment to regional peace and security. Substantial international challenges resulted in a series of diplomatic successes that were achieved through willingness and commitment. With support from its global alliances, the Kingdom of Bahrain was ready and able to meet complex global challenges with ease and confidence. The country’s efforts to defend their territorial and maritime sovereignty through

diplomatic means at the International Court of Justice demonstrate dedication to the nation, unwavering conviction and collective consciousness. Furthermore, the Kingdom of Bahrain’s role on the UN Security Council (19981999) as a non-permanent member, and the election of HE Shaikha Haya bint Rashed Al Khalifa in 2006 as the first Arab woman to preside over the UN General Assembly, exemplify the advancement of the country, further cementing its global image as a progressive, tolerant nation. The achievements of Bahraini diplomacy continue to grow on the international stage, and the Kingdom’s expanding network of embassies, signify a resolute, unanimous and effective vision. Efforts to enable young diplomats reflect an acknowledgement of the future generation’s crucial role in influencing and facilitating advancement in a global world.

01 BBK Deputy Chief Executive Wholesale Banking Group, Dr. AbdulRahman Saif

Can you tell us a bit about BBK’s new service Privé?

What prompted BBK to launch such a service?

BBK Privé is a private banking and wealth management initiative that offers a comprehensive range of banking and lifestyle solutions. Its birth marks the latest evolution of BBK’s commitment to customer service, a hallmark of the bank since its foundation in 1971. Headed by Mohamed AlRayes – Head of Private Banking and Wealth Management, Privé provides a valuable service to BBK’s customers that have built their wealth through decades of hard work, and who now require a service to preserve and sustain that wealth for generations to come. BBK Privé’s activities are not limited to Bahrain but extend to customers across the Gulf region, modelled on European private banking and the highest international standards.

BBK Privé expresses the core values of BBK in a new and exciting way. BBK has become a worldclass bank that uses next-generation technology to uphold and refine a tradition of service. Our goal is to go that extra mile, and that means customer service of the highest quality, as well as tailored financial products and services that meet the long-term needs of individuals and families – growing, managing and protecting your money.

What should clients expect? BBK Privé will give clients an integrated banking service that covers assets, liabilities, investment products and other features that suit their banking needs and lifestyle, such as personalised advice on financial products as well

17/03/2019 14:48

UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

028

as investments and portfolio management. BBK Privé will also incorporate the specialist knowledge of Aegila, BBK’s London-based investment and advisory associate that is focused on real estate opportunities in the UK and Europe – and share this expertise with clients in creating personal property portfolios.

What would you say differentiates Privé from similar services? BBK Privé will differentiate itself by providing an evolving range of products that respond to the needs of our wealthiest clients, delivering an exceptional caliber of service to meet their

026-029 BBK UCP D43.indd 28

March 2019

lifestyle expectations. The brand and identity for BBK Privé were carefully developed to position it as an integral part of BBK’s heritage. With the fast-changing trends in technology and communication in the financial sector, our offering will give BBK’s private clients exposure to new asset classes, aiming to enhance their total returns. Privé’s differentiation will come in two forms: the first being that not only is it a premium banking service offered to HNWIs, but also it’s a financial solution that offers tailormade products to clients based on their specific needs and situations that cover a range of assets, liabilities, investment, wealth management,

17/03/2019 14:48

04

and lifestyle solutions. The second form is that Privé, in line with BBK’s general direction and attention to the development of human capital in Bahrain, has ensured that top quality relationship managers will handle the exclusive affairs of this high-end segment. It’s the level of attention provided by the relationship manager to each client, closely examining every aspect of detail in their lives to provide them with the solution that would best fit them.

Why was Privé launched as part of BBK’s Wholesale Banking Group? Because our private clients are very sophisticated, have very specialized requirements,

026-029 BBK UCP D43.indd 29

and have needs that span from managing their personal banking affairs as well as their private businesses. The bank appreciates that their needs are not those of retail clients and are wider in scope, covering different types of solutions that may be characterized more of institutional nature.

How can we find out more about Privé? For more information, interested individuals can visit the BBK Privé website, call us on +973 17101010, or visit the BBK Privé lounge on the second floor of BBK headquarters in Manama. bbkprivé.com

Industry Pioneers DHL Express Middle East & North Africa CEO, Nour Suliman reveals the formula behind the decades-long success of the region’s first logistics provider.

You have been with DHL for over 4 decades. In your view, what were the biggest or most important transformations that the company experienced in that time? DHL was the first logistics provider to bring its services to the MENA region. When I joined DHL in 1978 as a young flying courier, the company had only just started to spread its presence in this part of the world with offices in Bahrain, Saudi, Egypt and the UAE. Bahrain, which was the first country to welcome DHL’s business, only had 6 employees, today we have 1000. DHL committed to investing in this region. It saw untapped potential and a booming economy. As trade and commerce grew, DHL strategically expanded to cater to the needs of its regional customers for logistics expertise, becoming the logistics partner of choice for speed, efficiency, reliability and direct access to the global marketplace. The company has definitely transformed in the last four decades. Today we are the largest express and logistics provider in the MENA with strong presence in 19 countries, over 160 dedicated domestic and international weekly flights, a fleet of 1,900+ vehicles, a client base of 80,000, and a staff count of 5700 employees.

How would you describe your management philosophy? My people are my main priority. They are the ones that run the business, and DHL’s success is

030-032 UCP Nour Suliman D43.indd 30

entirely attributed to them. I trust in the experience and capabilities of my team and empower them to perform their roles to the best of their ability. Logistics is a demanding business. It requires constant attention, late hours, and innovative minds, so it is important to recognise those who show commitment and work hard to benefit not only the company, but to also better themselves. I encourage staff participation and the exchange of ideas to inspire ‘out of the box’ thinking. I have an open-door policy and I am a phone call away from everyone that works with me. I expect the same approach to be implemented by my Senior Management and all managerial teams.

eCommerce footing. We invested in enhancing our air network to better our capabilities, expanded our facilities to accommodate growth and the space needed for more shipment inflow, we upgraded our MENA airplanes to a uniform fleet of Boeing 767’s, added more intra-regional and intercontinental routes, connections and flights to our portfolio, increased rotations into KSA which makes up a major part of our business, and expanded our lanes into Asia to drive in more traffic from countries like Pakistan and India.

How would you describe DHL’s performance in 2018? Were there any highlights or milestones?

Since we set up our MENA operations, we made sure to align our business strategy to the shifting demands and socioeconomic trends of this region. We had the advantage of being the first to bring logistics to this part of the world in 1976 so we pioneered the industry and helped shape the development of the logistics sector. In a region like the Middle East with its complex geo-political temperament, we’ve had to be creative, think outside of the box and be ready with solutions to make our customers’ businesses thrive. Through the years, we rolled out sustainable investments to strengthen DHL’s reach, logistics capabilities, technologies and air/road network; and we did not stray away from our core focus, our Express Time Definite services. All our enhancements were aimed at bettering transit times and boosting trade

2018 was a very good year for the company and we expect our financials to reflect that. We anticipate a jump in our revenues, which has been the standard year on year. DHL’s MENA operations have consistently seen a remarkable performance outpacing other regions in DHL’s network, and we are extremely proud of that. Two main factors have contributed to the success of our business: the growth in our Time Definite International (TDI) shipments and the increased focus on eCommerce. eCommerce has been a star player for DHL in the region, citing a phenomenal 40% annual growth since we launched our On Demand Delivery service (ODD). Much of our focus in 2018 was on strengthening our

What do you believe has contributed to DHL’s leading position in the logistics industry?

increase sales through advanced market intelligence, giving them necessary data to help them better reach their customer base internationally. Our role is quite crucial in supporting eCommerce players and helping them stay competitive. Innovation and customer service is where we excel, and we can add value by helping online merchants reach even more of the B2C market with speed, flexibility, and at reduced costs.

What kind of unique challenges are currently facing the logistics market in the Middle East? And how does DHL overcome those challenges? Each region has its own unique challenges and the Middle East is no different. We’ve had to deal with disruptions to road connectivity due to regional conflict, which affects timely deliveries, especially with intra-regional transactions. Delays at customs are also a problematic area and a direct result of the lack of trader knowledge about import / export requirements. More recently we saw fluctuating oil prices, taxation and more stringent government regulations. Despite this, our longstanding relationship with this region has enabled us to anticipate and prepare for any challenge that is thrown our way. And we have pushed through with our investments which demonstrate a solid strategy and strong commitment to this region.

links to our global distribution hubs. This not only gave our customers easier and faster access to high yield markets but also helped the region to emerge as a significant logistics Hub. The basis of our success however, and what has made DHL into the express provider of choice, is our commitment to customer service. Service excellence remains a top priority. Every single person working at DHL understands that the customer lies at the heart of everything we do; they also understand how instrumental their role is in satisfying that customer, from the person sitting behind a desk to the couriers picking up the shipments. Going the extra mile is part of our corporate culture and we invest heavily to train our staff on how to be that capable, qualified voice that clients can rely on for their shipping needs.

What recent technological innovations have had a major impact on the market recently? Technology and innovation play a big part in our operations. Our core business is time, and the technology we use helps slash delivery times. We constantly invent new ways across the value chain to improve our speed and efficiency, from how goods are stored and monitored, to new routing and faster delivery methods. The recent pace of

030-032 UCP Nour Suliman D43.indd 32

technology has forced us to re-engineer core areas across the supply chain, especially in the face of a more demanding customer. Take eCommerce for example. Today, online buyers have much higher expectations for speed, visibility, and convenience – and cost is a major factor. Last mile delivery can amount to as much as 30% of the total delivery costs, which can be detrimental to eCommerce players. Much of DHL’s latest tech innovations focus on solutions to deliver things faster wherever and whenever a customer wants, and at lower cost. Robotic delivery, unmanned aerial vehicles, Artificial Intelligence, and the list goes on.

Does DHL have plans to further target the ecommerce sector? eCommerce is definitely a lucrative playing field for DHL. We are expanding our footing and taking a closer look at this sector which has been quite profitable for our business. Traditional retail is being outpaced by B2C eCommerce growth and, judging from recent trends, online transactions are expected to accelerate in the coming years. We are developing new competitive B2C products, such as our On Demand Delivery (ODD) solution, to tap into the growing opportunities. Recently, we also launched a brilliant new eCommerce resource tool to help web merchants

What strategy does DHL have in place for the near future? What should we expect? The MENA is a very important region for DHL’s business, and one of the highest performing in its Express network. We will continue to invest in infrastructure developments to boost the company’s reach, logistics capabilities, and capacities across key states; this will help us to better transit times and customer service and support the growing logistical demands of our clients. In the last 5 years we have been very aggressive with our investments in this region; we opened eight new multi-million dollar gateways across KSA, Egypt, Morocco and Dubai while simultaneously upgrading DHL’s air/road networks, increasing flight frequencies, improving technologies, and enhancing customs clearance competencies. More recently, in January we also launched two new facilities in Jordan and Dhahran. We plan to continue to strengthen the region’s connectivity to the global marketplace, in light of the shifting economic landscape and emerging trends. E-commerce will definitely be a key driver moving forward as we come up with new products and services to grow our market and leverage on the fast-paced trends for cross-border shipments, which is expected to grow exponentially. dhl.com

Agent of Economic Prosperity Tamkeen is actively contributing to the sustainable development of Bahrain’s ecosystems. In this interview, Tamkeen CEO, Dr. Ebrahim Janahi, highlights the public authority’s latest developments including hosting the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC), Pitch@Palace Competition and the Fintech Talent Program (FTP).

What are some of the most notable achievements of Tamkeen to-date? Since its establishment in 2006, Tamkeen has consistently proved to be a significant national reform in line with the Kingdom’s Economic Vision 2030. To date Tamkeen has supported over 183,000 individuals and 51,000 businesses through more than 330 specialised programs. Tamkeen has consistently incorporated progressive expansions and strategies to address different market-related challenges. Tamkeen has undergone a noticeable evolution in the support extended to the private sector and its resulting impact on the economy.

Of Tamkeen’s achievements, which are the most recent developments? Over the last three years alone, Tamkeen has served more than 25% of the Bahrainis currently employed in the private sector, as part of the programs aimed at training, wage support and increment. In 2018 alone, the program’s wage support category witnessed a 207% increase in the support

034-036 UCP Tamkeen D43.indd 35

amount given through it compared to the previous year. As for the Wage Increase category, the support amount increased by 86% and served more than 4,400 Bahraini employees, an increase of 192% compared to the previous year. Meanwhile in 2018, the Training Support category increased by 121% with regards to support amount when compared to 2017. Furthermore, start-ups comprised 62.4% of the total number of enterprises served under the program since its launch as part of the larger flagship Enterprise Support Program in 2016.

Bahrain has been chosen as the host of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) 2019 which will be organized by Tamkeen. What are the overall benefits of having this event take place in the Kingdom? The GEC is the annual gathering of the international start-up community which brings together some of the brightest minds in the business world. To have thousands of entrepreneurs, investors and

Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) 2019, as a key member in the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), reflects Bahrain’s international presence and well-established communication and relationship with key players in the international economic landscape.” policymakers in the Kingdom for the GEC is highly significant moment in Bahrain’s move towards being a fully diversified economy, with a strong entrepreneurial and investment ecosystem. The global annual event has previously been held in the UK, USA, Brazil, China, Russia and Italy. Holding the prestigious Global Entrepreneurship Congress (GEC) 2019, as a key member in the Global Entrepreneurship Network (GEN), reflects Bahrain’s international presence and wellestablished communication and relationship with key players in the international landscape.

How will the attendance of businessmen and women from Bahrain create an impact at GEC? Considering Tamkeen’s contributions to the growth of private sector enterprises, while developing the skills and expertise of Bahrain’s workforce, a majority of the local businessmen and women attending GEC this April will have been supported through Tamkeen’s 330 programs since it was establishment. Our role is to empower Bahraini citizens by providing them with the training and skills they need to make them the employee of choice in the different fields of the private sector. With their considerable skills and expertise, GEC delegates from overseas will surely be impressed by their understanding of what makes markets grow and how to implement innovative solutions.

Bahrain was also selected to host the second edition of Pitch@Palace this year. What is Tamkeen’s role in the competition and how will the competition create a significant impact? The Pitch@Palace is one of the world’s leading

034-036 UCP Tamkeen D43.indd 36

initiatives which celebrate the entrepreneurship sector. The competition is known to encourage start ups and provide entrepreneurs with a platform to develop their budding enterprises, all within an integrated interactive program that enables participants to benefit from an extensive network of local and international specialists. Bahrain had the privilege of participating in Pitch@Palace for the first time in 2018 with Bahraini contestants being nominated to the GCC round in Abu Dhabi. These contestants ultimately won the People’s Choice Award in the final international rounds held in London. As part of its participation in the GCC round of the competition, Bahrain has been selected to host Pitch@Palace GCC 2.0 in March this year. This year, participants will be taking part in a bootcamp where they will receive support and guidance on how to develop and hone their pitch. On March 27, these entrepreneurs will pitch to an audience which includes investors, mentors and business executives.

their professional skill and gain insightful experience in the latest Fintech trends and technologies on a global scale. To performing participants will have the additional opportunity of gaining international experience in FinTech through internship placements in Singapore and the United States.

In line with Tamkeen’s goals, FTP addresses future skill requirements of Bahrain’s financial services industry and FinTech start-ups. It uniquely positions the Kingdom as a center of excellence for FinTech talent and prepares Bahraini graduates for careers in Fintech innovation. The program is strategic and will help create a local and wellqualified workforce that can meet the demands of the financial services industry, lead innovation and preserve Bahrain’s leadership position in finance and FinTech.

Tamkeen recently launched the Middle East’s first national FinTech Talent Program (FTP). Can you tell us a bit about the program?

What are Tamkeen’s plans moving forward? Will there be any new schemes or programs added to Tamkeen’s offerings?

We are keen on contributing to the growth of the private sector and evolving international market through innovative programs and development initiatives. The inaugural FinTech Talent Program (FTP), initiated by Bahrain FinTech Bay and supported by Tamkeen has been developed in partnership with global experts in finance and technology. This includes Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and international blockchain and intelligence academies. Participants will have the opportunity to develop

Tamkeen has been a crucial factor in developing private sector businesses into well-established businesses, aiding in their progression from their establishment as start-ups. As part of its current three-year plan, Tamkeen aims to realign its support programs and initiatives to maximize their impact and value gained. The focus will be on equipping entrepreneurs with skills and opportunities that enable them to swiftly respond to economic changes.

Considering the rapid growth of the international FinTech industry, how will the program contribute to Bahrain’s FinTech field?

World of Colour Prolific Bahraini artist Mariam Fakhro speaks with Durrah about her latest exhibitions, the inspiration behind her work, and her incredible journey to success.

What are some of your proudest recent exhibitions? I’m very proud and extremely grateful that Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council of Women, inaugurated my exhibition, Taw Al Nahar (Daylight). The exhibition was themed around nature, landscapes, and our interaction with the outdoors. I worked with acrylic and canvas for this series of paintings, which gives me the ability to use texture and depth to better express the theme. I have also just showcased my work at Bahrain’s 45th Annual Fine Arts Exhibition, which was held under the patronage of His Royal Highness the Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa. For this exhibition, I created a new sculpture called Summer 44, which was inspired by my mother and the year she moved to Bahrain to get married.

02

038-041 Artist Fakhro D43.indd 39

What is your favourite medium to work with and why?

I prefer painting to other mediums. When I started painting, I worked with oil colours and then moved on to acrylic but I also enjoy watercolours. I believe that colour is a crucial aspect of any artistic work and I always strive to create a unique balance in my work. Depending on the painting and the method I use, I utilise different colours to convey feelings and evoke emotions. I submitted my first sculpture at ArtBAB (2017) and was surprised by the overwhelmingly positive response, which inspired me to work on Summer 44. I crafted the piece in clay and had it moulded into bronze, which gave it an entirely different look and feel.

What inspired you to become an artist? Art has always been my passion and I remember being interested in it from a young age. I was reluctant to study art when I was at college because it wasn’t considered a serious career at the time, but I wish I had taken the chance. After the birth of my third child, I was talking with a friend

17/03/2019 14:50

who mentioned that a Spanish artist was teaching a course in Bahrain. Although I was interested and eventually enrolled, I didn’t have much confidence in my abilities and was afraid that the teacher would think I was wasting her time. Fortunately, she saw my potential and encouraged me to enter an exhibition with the other students. That inspired to me keep painting, learn different mediums, and develop my skills in scenery, portraits, still life, and other subjects. In 1985, I got the chance to join the Bahrain Arts Society, which opened up lots of new opportunities for me to showcase my work and develop my talent.

How would you describe your artistic style and what factors influence your work? My artistic style could be considered as modern art and my work is heavily influenced by nature. I

040

love working with vivid colours to create paintings that inspire people to go outside, look at the sky, feel the grass, and smell the flowers. Painting makes me happy and, even during the most challenging times in my life; it provided a sense of comfort. I think this sense of positivity is reflected in the subjects and colours I choose.

Do you believe that artists need a formal education or can they succeed just as well without it? Speaking from personal experience, I don’t think formal artistic education is essential, but I believe it is useful. In my opinion, perseverance, passion, and practise are the most important aspects. It’s also always a good idea to have a firm understanding of whatever you’re working on, especially when your subject is historical or cultural.

06

Who are some of your artistic influences? I am continuously inspired by the work of Shaikh Rashid bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Abbas Al Mosawi, and Abdul Rahim Sharif. They each have distinct styles, but all share the same undeniable talent. On a global scale, I’ve always enjoyed taking inspiration from Matisse, Monet, and other impressionists.

On average, how much time do you spend on each painting and what has been your most challenging piece?

07

038-041 Artist Fakhro D43.indd 41

It depends entirely on the painting and the subject matter. For my first exhibition with the Bahrain Art Society, I recreated two images from smaller oriental paintings, which took more than a month to complete. Besides the scale, the images were incredibly realistic and included a lot of fine details, which required careful attention. I think these were my most time-consuming pieces. Another of my most labour intensive paintings was a portrait of HRH the Prime Minister’s father, Shaikh Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, which depicted him

in the desert with a falcon. HRH the Prime Minister bought the piece, which was an incredible honour that made all the time and effort I spent working on it worthwhile.

What advice would you like to give aspiring artists? It takes years to develop as an artist and find your niche, which is why I tell them not to take criticism to heart. I also encourage budding artists to learn from the experience of others and always believe in their talent. Even today, I am still learning new things and feel as though I have yet to reach my full potential. Bahrain may be a small island but it has a large number of talented and creative individuals. Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa and Tamkeen are doing incredible work with ArtBAB, which helps aspiring Bahraini artists to showcase their talent while spotlight the Kingdom’s vibrant contemporary art scene. @mariamalifakhro_art

Preserving the Legacy General Manager of Ferrari Middle East, Giorgio Turri on what it takes to keep the iconic brand’s momentum going after 70+ years of recordbreaking accomplishments.

Can you tell us a bit about the Ferrari Challenge taking place in Bahrain? What are your expectations of it? The Ferrari Challenge takes place at some of the world’s most famous, state-of-the-art racing tracks and Bahrain International Circuit is certainly fit to be the first to feature in this season’s calendar of the European series. The Middle East is also home for some of the most avid Ferraristas globally and hosting such a major event in the region brings a lot of excitement to the Ferrari community here. We have some very well established drivers in the region here, including the Lebanese racer Tani Hanna.

In your opinion, what’s the secret behind Ferrari’s unique relationship with its clientele? Our clients demand the very best, and we’re delighted to have the challenge to cater to their every need and exceed their expectations. One aspect that we’re currently focused on is the way that we execute events, knowing that the power of the brand lies in experiencing our cars and our lifestyle. This is truly when the product comes

042-046 Ferrari Middle East D43.indd 43

to live and the emotional connection with the brand and specific cars takes hold. Over the past 12 months, we’ve extended our events program and have been super pro-active with our special drive events, making them longer and more sophisticated and multi-layered. Over the past 12 months, events have included our legendary celebrations for the brand’s 70th years anniversary, and we have also enjoyed continuing our Esperienza Ferrari series, where clients are invited for a car briefing by (Corsa Pilota) licensed trainers from Italy, followed by a drive to experience the outstanding performance of each car. The Ferrari Challenge is also an excellent way of supporting amateur racing drivers gain exhilarating track and race experience. The feedback from clients and prospects has been overwhelmingly positive.

How would you describe Ferrari’s performance in the Middle East region? The perception of Ferrari in the region mirrors that of the rest of the world. It is one of the most powerful brands in the world, and the ultimate symbol of style, heritage and performance.

The Prancing Horse is an enduring symbol of excellence both here and globally. Ferrari is a leader in its respective market segments; sports cars as well as GT cars. However, the real key to Ferrari’s success, in the Middle Eastern market (and globally), is having the most comprehensive model line-up in its history, industry-leading free 7-year maintenance and 12-year Pre-Owned programs – which guarantee the best residual values – and the collector car status surrounding the marque. You can also very much track Ferrari’s successful performance to the economy. As our oil-based economy continues to diversify, we are seeing widening interest in the brand.

042-046 Ferrari Middle East D43.indd 44

Can you tell us some of the milestones or key goals that Ferrari achieved in 2018? There have been many as 2018 was a great year for Ferrari! We launched several new models, as we presented the 488 Pista and the 488 Pista Spider. We also introduced a brand-new model line with the Icona segment by revealing the Ferrari Monza Sp1 and Sp2. At the same time, we have announced a record year in terms of financial performance in 2018, in addition to our plans for year. This is beside the ongoing success which we are achieving in the different racing and lifestyle activities which we organize.

March 2019

What are the challenges you face with a brand like Ferrari? The biggest challenge we face is living up to the responsibility of maintaining what the Ferrari brand stands for, which is the ultimate in automotive excellence. It takes a very long time to build what Ferrari has built in terms of the brand, the cars and client relationship. We are constantly striving to please our customers and exceed their expectations. When it comes to the automotive sector, the legislative focus has long been on C02 emissions. This aspect is certainly the starting point for a strategy of sustainability and is an area in which Ferrari has constantly been at the cutting edge. All our models boast class-leading emissions, thanks both to the adoption of Stop & Start technology (introduced in 2010) and the huge strides made in overall mechanical and combustion efficiency. Not forgetting that the factory itself – a unique reality in the automotive sector where every stage of the production process, from the foundry to the painting and the final assembly, is carried out – is the industry leader in terms of sustainability, having comprehensively outperformed the 2020 Kyoto protocol already since 2010, in other words 10 years early.

What have been the most successful Ferrari models in the Middle East market over the past few years? Ferraris are not only timeless but unique and innovative. All our models are remarkable, and we ensure that the values of each product are attuned to specific audiences. For example, we have been pleased with the response to the new Portofino, which is a highly versatile lifestyle product, but equally to LaFerrari Aperta, released to mark our 70th years anniversary in 2017, which is a car for the true coinnsisseur. However, what always generates the most excitement and anticipation is the release of a new model, and we look forward to our pipeline of new products in 2019.

05

always the next one”. Of course, I have a favorite from the past but I’m not going to tell you!

With such a legendary brand and history of achievements, what would be the next step for Ferrari?

Do you have a personal favorite model from Ferrari? What qualities make it your favorite?

Ferrari’s innovations differ from every other car company and 2019 will see us continue in this vein. We plan to continue to lead through our heritage of offering a dynamic product development as we plan for a range of new models. Watch this space! On a technical front, our engineering goal is to reduce emissions while at the same time still improve the overall performance of our products. Traditionally Ferrari has always designed and built to be the most beautiful cars in the world, but we also need to stay at the cutting edge of technology.

There is a famous quote by the founder of Ferrari that goes like this, “the best Ferrari is

How did Hublot perform in 2018? Were there any major achievements or milestones you can share with us? 2018 was an exceptional year for Hublot, both in the Middle East and globally. With double digit growth, we achieved another record year. To mention just one of the many achievements of our brand last year, our participation in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia was obviously a major milestone, and so was the commercialization of our smart watch, the Big Bang Referee Watch, which was a huge success.

What was the best-selling Hublot watch in 2018?

Our first best-selling watch remains the same since 2005 back when it was launched, and it’s the Big Bang 44mm steel and ceramic.

In a market full of prestigious watch brands, how does Hublot position itself to stand out from the competition? We stand out among the competition by being ‘First, Different and Unique’ in everything we do.

What are some of the watchmaking techniques or innovations that became popular in recent years? I can confidently say that it’s sapphire watches. Sapphire is a high technology material, which is really difficult to produce and manufacture, and that requires advanced technology machines. Back in 2016, we were leaders in adding an affordable sapphire watch to our collection, and we are the first to have introduced colored sapphire such as blue sapphire, red sapphire, and more recently,

yellow sapphire. Now, you can see that most of the watch brands in the industry are following the trend and doing sapphire watches as well.

What would you say is a new preference or change in buying habits for watch customers today? Online shopping is one of the new trends among the young generation of customers. Just to give you an example, last year we launched a watch called Big Bang MECA-10 P2P that customers could only purchase online and with Bitcoins. It was a collaboration with OS Limited (OSL) to commemorate Bitcoin’s 10th anniversary. We were the first to do something like that.

What are some of the challenges facing the Hublot brand these days? Our challenges are to grow even closer to our customers, and to attract new clients and build long-lasting relations with them. We are very clientoriented. For example, we developed a platform called Hublotista, which is like a VIP club for Hublot owners. Once you have registered on it, the first thing you get is 1-year extra warranty for your watch. Then you also receive insights and news shared only on this platform, as well as personal invitations to exclusive events and experiences.

Do you have a personal favorite from Hublot?

05

06

My favorite Hublot watch is the King Power UNICO All Black, which was the first watch equipped with our UNICO movement. I particularly like that one because I worked on the development and the reliability of its movement.

How do you see the Hublot brand evolving as you go forward? Hublot’s DNA is The Art of Fusion. I believe we will be working even harder on that, whether a fusion of materials, or developing our partnerships, which are fusions of time with other fields we’re passionate about. Since the brand always seeks to be ‘First, Different and Unique’, that will keep resonating in the future, allowing us to constantly grow and surprise the industry and watch lovers alike. On a commercial level, we will keep expanding, with new boutiques opening in the Middle East, and all around the world. hublot.com

052-053. Interview - Sentiments D43.indd 52

Alongside their full-time careers in banking, the Khunji sisters channel their creativity into Sentiments, an Instagram-based jewelry business aimed at women with refined taste and those looking for unique gifts from the heart. Their dazzling creations are crafted using high-quality materials, including 18 and 21 karat gold, diamonds, precious stones and Bahraini pearls. While their main goal is to design jewelry with sentimental value, the carefully selected materials ensure that each piece is quite literally worth its weight in gold. After being encouraged to pursue their passion by family and friends who had received their customised jewelry as gifts for special occasions, the sisters started the business in 2017. Sahar said: “We never planned on launching a jewelry business, customising designs was just something

we did for the people closest to us. Everyone was incredibly supportive, so we decided to create an Instagram account and posted a few pictures of the pieces we created. The response from people we didn’t know was amazing, which is when we realised there was huge potential and started building our skills and client base.” Marwa said: “Our first collection was the Heartbeat line. My friend had just given birth and I took the heartbeat pattern from the ultrasound and moulded it into a necklace. That’s why we decided to call the company Sentiments, because our pieces have sentimental value. The collection is still very popular and we try to make each design different by using different sections of the ultrasound and engraving the name and date of birth of each child on the back.” 01 The close relationship between the sisters

is the beating heart of Sentiments, and both agree the company would not have achieved its success without their dynamic partnership and shared work ethic. Sahar said: “Working together is definitely an advantage because we are more than just sisters, we’re best friends too. We share a similar sense of style and can bounce ideas off of each other, which helps with the design process and ensures we create pieces our customers will treasure. A lot of people think that working with family is more difficult but I disagree. We always support each other and it makes running the business much more manageable. When it comes to running a business alongside working full-time jobs and raising a family, effective time management is crucial.

Sahar says: “We currently assist our customers for almost 18 hours a day, responding to their queries and sending them customised designs for approval within two days. We both put a great amount of time and effort into the business, which would be impossible to do alone.” In just a few short years, their Instagram following has surged to more than 15,000 and this number continues to rise. Besides the quality of their designs, the sisters believe this growth stems from keeping their prices competitive and making high quality jewelry more accessible to a wider audience. The Polygon collection includes necklaces, bracelets, and earrings with black or white diamonds and other precious stones. The Love line features heart-shaped bracelets and necklaces with diamonds and rubies that say ‘love’ in Arabic. The company also plans on introducing new designs before Mother’s Day and the holy month of Ramadan. While the company’s collections and

For example, our Precious collection is themed around birthstones and a customer asked us to include her husband’s alongside her own. We are always happy to work closely with our customers to ensure they are completely happy with the designs and try to accommodate any changes they request.” Although Sentiments is a Bahrain-based registered company, orders are frequently placed across the GCC, UAE, and Saudi Arabia, which reflects the company’s regional reputation for quality. The sisters are currently in negotiations to showcase their jewelry at a dedicated outlet in Dubai and a well-known location in Bahrain. Jewellery Virtuosity 01

Chaumet revisits the splendour of Joséphine’s court finery in contemporary jewellery with one hundred High Jewellery pieces united for the first time in an exceptional presentation in Saint-Germain-des-Prés.

For over two centuries, Chaumet has been dedicating its High Jewellery creations to those who cultivate the art of appearance at the height of their femininity. An expert in the art of selecting and associating her jewels, today Joséphine remains the inspiration for these creations. Combining her sense of spectacle, the impact of her tiaras and her taste for exceptional stones, Joséphine, Joséphine – Chaumet au Firmament is the purest and most precious expression of the empress’s spirit. The tiara, the statement piece of Josephine’s appearances at court, is revisited in parures set with exceptional central stones: intense blue or bold pink sapphires, pigeon’s blood rubies, bright green emeralds, white and yellow diamonds, and pearls. Tiaras, necklaces, earrings, rings and bracelets with generous curves are inspired by the empress’s passion for botany and evoke the lush nature of Martinique, the land of her birth. 02

A new parure completes the collection, perpetuating the unique Chaumet art of rendering women singular for special occasions. These diamond-paved timeless creations, one of which is transformable, reinterpret a naturalistic motif in curving, supple lines. Bringing out the majesty of cushion-cut central stones, these creations are a precious tribute to one of the most exceptional jewels in Chaumet’s history: the Régent, a legendary diamond set by the founder of the Maison into Napoléon’s coronation sword. Available in rubies, blue and pink sapphires, and white and yellow diamonds, the Joséphine Éclat Floral parure distinguishes and elevates the wearer. In parures glittering with rubies, and white or yellow diamonds, Joséphine’s allure meets that of another inspiration. The fuchsia tiara, made in 1919 for Hedwige de la Rochefoucauld to wear

for her wedding to Prince Sixtus of BourbonParma, is revisited in necklaces, earrings, aigrette rings and cocktail rings. The naturalistic motif, reinterpreted in colour, revives an historical piece that has become emblematic. Born of the virtuosity possessed by the High Jewellery atelier at 12 Place Vendôme, these creations highlight the different facets of the Maison’s expertise. The stones are individually chosen not only to meet the criteria of excellence, but also for the emotion expressed by their purity, their harmony or their luminosity. Faithful to its art of colour, Chaumet favours rare shades: the intense “cornflower blue” tone of matching sapphires on a parure, or a bright yellow diamond on a cocktail ring. chaumet.com

Precise Creativity Code 11.59 by Audemars Piguet is ahead of the game.

Audemars Piguet interweaves tensions and opposite forces in the design of the collection’s uniquely recognisable case. By boldly embedding an octagonal middle case within a round case, Audemars Piguet cuts through the timeline of its long history of form and design experimentations. The upper part of the open-worked lugs is welded to the extra-thin bezel, while the lower part leans delicately against the caseback in perfect alignment. All teams at Audemars Piguet have been implicated in their design and manufacture. New processes challenging traditional production standards were developed to solder the lugs to this extremely thin surface. With its optimum curved ergonomics, the case has been conceived to adjust to different wrist sizes, making it comfortable for all to wear despite its 41 mm in diameter. Satin-brushed, beveled and polished, the bezel, lugs and case

present high complexity finishing techniques usually found on calibres. The Manufacture has created a complex double curved glare-proofed sapphire crystal, whose tense, arched profile embodies the watch’s contemporary design. The glass’s internal surface is shaped like a dome, while its external surface is vertically curved from 6 to 12 o’clock. Its shape perfectly integrates the extra thin bezel and extends from edge to edge. Playing with depth, perspective and light, this double curved sapphire crystal dives into the world of optics for a unique visual experience, while enhancing the detailed work on the dial. The polished chamfer all around the glass adds the finishing touch, while echoing the perfect finish of the bezel, lugs and case. audemarspiguet.com

Iconic Craftsmanship Discover OMEGA’s dedication to the art of women’s watchmaking, through the creation of its newest Constellation, The Manhattan.

Since its earliest years, OMEGA has always displayed a true commitment to women’s watchmaking. The Constellation Manhattan is one of the true jewels in that history. First released in 1982, it has now become one of the most iconic and loved ladies’ watches across the world. Today, the modern Manhattan is the ultimate choice for a diverse lifestyle – effortlessly taking you from fast-paced working days to sophisticated evenings out. That’s why OMEGA has dedicated itself to uncompromising quality and elegance in every model. The result is a truly feminine timepiece that lifts this famous collection to the next level. Small yet powerful, the movement inside each 29 mm model is tested and certified at the Master Chronometer standard. This is the industry’s highest level of precision, performance and magnetic resistance – which is particularly important when you consider the effects of magnetism we face in everyday life from items such as laptops, phones, hairdryers and the metal clasps on handbags. Everyone knows that true beauty is found in the smallest details. On the Constellation Manhattan’s mother-of-pearl dial, every feature is perfectly

formed. The date window at 6 o’clock brings symmetry to the design, while the diminutive gold star and OMEGA logo represent heritage and precision. Finally, each diamond index fits snugly within its own golden holder, bringing elegance and radiance to every hour. The essence of the Constellation dial is uncluttered and pure. Yet one detail that must be included is the Constellation star - OMEGA’s enduring symbol of precision. This icon pays tribute to the brand’s earliest days of observatory trials and famous records. Today, it can be found on every timepiece in the new Constellation collection. Here, it has been exquisitely created in 18K Sedna™ gold and shows a commitment to the most precise and refined craftsmanship. Each 29 mm Constellation Manhattan is presented on a newly crafted bracelet. The style is inspired by the original Constellation “Manhattan” collection from 1982 and features polished “midbar” links that deliver a luxurious look and feel. After all, a woman’s watch should be exquisite from every angle. omegawatches.com

Luxury Statements The best and latest from the world of watchmaking for the man of today.

Hublot Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski Red Magic The Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski has been paired with Hublot’s patented red ceramic. The colour of life and of passion, red evokes Richard Orlinski’s first Born Wild Crocodile sculpture. Created in 2004, it features this vivid and powerful shade of red, which has since gone on to become the most recognisable colour in his menagerie. Since 2017 Richard Orlinski, the world’s bestselling contemporary artist, has been adding his angular style to Hublot watches. Works of art for the wrist, these feature his signature facets, nuanced with angles and edges. Like his sculptures, the Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski Red Magic boasts the sharp threedimensional sculpted lines and polished finish which are the artist’s trademark. The Classic Fusion Aerofusion Chronograph Orlinski Red Magic is released in a limited edition of 200 pieces. 45 mm of art and innovation crafted from Hublot’s red ceramic. From the seconds hand to the counters and indexes; from the case to the bezel, all the way to the strap, nothing has escaped the vivid glow of Hublot x Orlinski red. Bell & Ross BR-X1 Skeleton Tourbillon Sapphire Bell & Ross began a new chapter in its history with the BRX1 CHRONOGRAPH TOURBILLON SAPPHIRE in 2016. The brand’s first completely transparent watch caused quite a stir by combining prestigious watches complications, technical performance and its signature design codes. A skeletonized version of this exceptional BR-X1 was unveiled at Baselworld, as part of a collection that underscores the bold creativity of Bell & Ross. Of the six new unique pieces created, three examples that marry transparency and color were presented. The first of these three exclusive pieces is black –the signature color of the Bell & Ross style since its creation and a reference to aircraft instruments. It offers the purest of contrasts with the transparent sapphire case and the translucent bracelet. The rubies in the tourbillon cage are the only touch of extravagance in this landscape of sublime purity. The second version offers an interpretation of the refinement and nobility of a precious metal. All the visible metal components of the movement are made from solid pink gold. Like a jewel enclosed in a glass case. The third BRX1 SKELETON TOURBILLON SAPPHIRE honors the traditions of watchmaking with a movement inspired by the blued color of the hands-on vintage timepieces. This deep blue, paired with the transparency of the case and bracelet, adds a modern dimension to the watch. bellross.com

Chronoswiss Flying Grand Regulator The Grand Regulator in its distinctive 44 mm case has been a permanent fixture of the Chronoswiss collection for more than 20 years. In 2017, this classic watch was given an upgrade and has boasted its innovative 3D dial design ever since under the name of Flying Grand Regulator. In addition to this timepiece with its stainless-steel case and midnight blue dial, two more Flying Grand Regulator versions in bold colour combinations will be launched this spring, each of them featuring a DLC coated case. At a hardness of 5,000 Vickers, a DLC (Diamond-Like Carbon) coating comes close to diamond and is extremely resistant to scratches or chemical influences. This process also gives the stainless steel case a dark, almost mystical look which is combined with different colours. The Flying Grand Regulator is set apart by its intricate dial design featuring several levels: While the lower one is decorated with the characteristic guilloche pattern designed at Chronoswiss´ in-house studio, a second level was designed over it on screwfastened bases with the scale for the central minute display. The dial is topped off by the funnel-like displays for the hour and second floating above the minute scale. chronoswiss.com

Ulysse Nardin Rose Gold and Boutique-Only Edition Marine Torpilleur Two very contemporary new timepieces have joined the ranks of the popular Marine Torpilleur class. Classic black or gunmetal grey, these lean clean modern machines are every bit as sleek and stream-lined as the navy destroyer class of torpedo boats from which they take their name. Initially launched with white or blue dials, the Marine Torpilleur fleet is now reinforced with two stunning new editions: rose gold with black and gold dial; and a Boutique-only version in stainless steel with grey dial. Ele-gantly elongated Roman numerals mark the hours. The graceful, poire-style hands are in rose gold colour, as are the ‘Haut’ (high) and ‘Bas’ (low) indications of the power reserve. The crown is screwdown and engraved with the Ulysse Nardin logo. The small seconds counter at 6 o’clock encircles the date window and the “1846” logo—a stylish nod to the year the house was founded. The luxury straps are in perfectly matched alligator. ulysse-nardin.com

Panerai Submersible Marina Militare Carbotech - 47mm The new Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition is a combination of performance, strength and reliability worthy of the remarkable champion who has inspired this amazing new creation of mechanical engineering. Guillaume Néry was twice a world champion and he broke four constant weight free-diving world records. This former professional athlete is now an ambassador of the sea, turning his astonishing underwater experiences into images and videos which amaze everyone who sees them. In his honour, Panerai has created a new watch combining technical performance and a remarkably powerful, sporty appearance. The Panerai Submersible Chrono Guillaume Néry Edition is above all a professional diving watch, water-resistant to a depth of about 300 metres (30 bar) and fitted with a unidirectional rotating bezel, which accurately displays the duration of the dive. The dial is clearly legible under all lighting conditions and in complete darkness, thanks to the luminous white markers, which stand out strongly against the shark grey, textured background. Engraved on the screw back are the champion’s signature and the depths of his final aweinspiring record: 126 metres, achieved with a single breath panerai.com

Roger Dubuis Excalibur Huracàn Performante In 2018, inspired by Lamborghini Squadra Corse and its unique automobile aesthetic showcased in the Huracán Performante, the watchmakers of the Manufacture have developed a timepiece brimming with racing design codes. One of the most striking features of the aggressive Excalibur Huracán Performante timepiece is its brand-new ‘engine’: the RD630 movement with its 12° inclined balance wheel representing the calibre signature associated with Lamborghini. Taking strong visual cues from the shapes on which the supercar is based, this timepiece notably gives pride of place to the hexagon. A versatile geometrical figure used to construct the volume of the supercar, it appears throughout the timepiece in various guises and is notably reproduced to symbolize strut bars. The stand-out half hexagon appearing on the louvered air intakes of the Lamborghini Huracán Performante are repeated as miniature versions visible through the openwork dial of the Excalibur Huracán Performante timepiece. Other special decoration includes a new crown inspired by racing nuts on supercar wheels, a twin-barrel ‘energy tank’ and a multi-material ‘spoiler’, used for the decorative openworked bridges. Viewed from the back, even the complete circular weight of the automatic movement emulates the design of the wheel rims of Lamborghini’s Huracán family. Offering the same blend of performance, lightness and security as its namesake supercar, the Excalibur Huracán Performante timepiece sports distinctive “Technical Titan Grey” livery complete with signature bright yellow accents. The lining of the genuine Alcantara strap of the Excalibur Huracán Performante watch crosses the finish line with a rubber inlay featuring the Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyre pattern design. rogerdubuis.com

Parmigiani Tonda Metropolitaine Selene Rose Gold Parmigiani Fleurier has expanded its Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène range following the resounding success of this watch, launched in 2016, with two new models in rose gold. These models display the moon phases thanks to a movement produced entirely inhouse and set in a modern, refined rose gold case. The Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène in rose gold features two dial versions: the first, in abyss blue, is adorned with a central lotus flower – a symbol of femininity. This decoration is cut from mother of pearl and applied to the dial, from which it stands out 0.2 mm. The satin and polished finishes of the lace design create a play of light that beautifully showcases the quality of the workmanship. The second dial is made from highly reflective white mother of pearl, and features a lotus flower in solid rose gold, echoing the indices and the case. On each dial version, the bezel is adorned with 76 brilliant-cut diamonds totaling ~0.52 carat. The russet moon of the Tonda Métropolitaine Sélène emulates the brilliance of the night sky. It is magnified thanks to its surface made up of craters — known as lunar seas — obtained by hand-applying successive layers of transfers. This watch offers a genuine embodiment of the moon on the wrist that disappears and emerges from wisps of cloud amidst its starry constellation. parmigiani.com

Chopard Happy Hearts A Maison renowned for its boundless creativity, Chopard has decided to orchestrate an encounter between two of its most iconic collections. The Big Heart of the Happy Hearts collection finds its place on the playful dial of the Happy Sport, the watchmaking success that has been leading diamonds in a merry dance for over 25 years, in a perpetually renewed spirit of Joie de Vivre. The result of this union is an even airier interpretation: a Happy Hearts timepiece enlivened by three freely dancing diamonds, a red heart as well as a diamond-set heart. This new watch, exclusively available from Chopard boutiques, is a joyful new addition to the Maison’s emblematic Happy Hearts jewellery collection, which showcases colourful hearts as well as hearts embracing dancing diamonds. An array of talismans weaving ties between all Big-Hearted women, fired by a spirit of generosity and self-giving. Chopard enriches the collection with this new timepiece by endowing it with a firm expression of its watchmaking expertise. Fitted with a 36 mm stainless steel case and a red alligator leather strap, the Happy Hearts watch features a white dial with a life of its own created by five dancing elements: three diamonds, and above all, both a red and a diamond-set 18-carat white gold heart. chopard.com

Bovet 1822 Récital 23 Moon phase The Récital 23 is the first BOVET women’s timepiece to feature the “writing slope” case, which is designed here for the first time in an oval shape that is 43 mm high and 28.7 mm wide. Hours and minutes occupy an off-center dial at 6 o’clock, while a deeply poetic three-dimensional moon phase is displayed on the upper section of the timepiece. The Récital 23 timepiece is driven by a self-winding mechanical movement. Its oscillating weight in 22-ct gold is finely hand-engraved with the “Fleurisanne” motif that Maison BOVET 1822 has been producing for almost two centuries. Its oscillations power two barrels whose energy guarantees 62 hours’- of power reserve. The module, entirely developed and manufactured in BOVET 1822’s workshops, makes it possible to offset the time display and add the moon phase indicator. Presented in the form of a hemispherical dome, the moon phase indicator majestically corresponds to the volume of the “writing slope” case. The dome’s surface is engraved to evoke the lunar surface and filled with luminescent material. This feat is all the more remarkable due to the indicator’s camber. It is read via a three-dimensional circular aperture that singlehandedly requires over a day’s work to be manufactured and decorated. The precision mechanism used to drive the moon phase requires correction only once every 122 years. bovet.com

Corum Heritage Eleganza Corum unveils a new collection that is 100% dedicated to women: Eleganza. Its particularity: available both in casual chic and precious jewellery versions; as part of a strictly limited edition, these feminine models feature, for the first time in the brand’s history, an automatic regulator movement and represent the perfect gift for the woman of style. At once precious yet casual, modern yet already legendary: Corum brings opposites together for its new 100% feminine collection. The Eleganza embodies Italian-style chicness, suitable for gala events or paired with jeans and trainers. The choice of gem setting is a reflection of this twofold goal. Models presenting hard gemstones (tanzanite, aquamarine, tourmaline, amethyst) appear alongside jewellery versions with traditional gemstones (diamond, sapphire). The cases also capture this dual orientation: the first three-piece series features a silver case, the second four-piece series features an 18- carat pink gold case. Both designs are dedicated to the chic and modern young woman and collectors of jewellery timepieces. They share a 40 mm common diameter displaying a dial that matches the gem setting of the bezel and the crown. corum-watches.com

Fendi Runaway with Bracelet The Run Away Watch Collection is now complemented with versions featuring a refined bracelet adorned with an F is FENDI logo, in echo with the watch case design. The unexpected upside-down logo stands out on the bracelet wrapping elegantly around the wrist. Modern appeal with an elegant twist. Distinct yet daring in design, the Run Away architecture is accented by an interplay of shapes and graphics featuring FENDI’s creativity at its best. The bracelet is delicately integrated into the case, revealing linear geometries of its interlocking links. The circular F is FENDI logo applied on the bracelet at 12 and 6 o’clock brings a playful twist to this signature Collection. A bold letter F placed on the sapphire crystal emphasizes the depth of the dial and its unique off-centered look. Embellished with precious diamonds for the Run Away Women’s version, it adds an ultimate touch of brilliance to the timepiece. The Butterfly Artist Empty walls around the UK will soon be clamouring for Michael Olsen’s stunning butterfly wall art installations. He creates his Butterfly Art using hand painted feather butterflies, in all shapes, sizes and colours, mounted in transparent acrylic boxes.

02

070-072 Artist Olsen D43.indd 71

A beautiful addition to any wall, Michael has been creating these works of art for the past 6 years. One installation can take anything from four to six weeks to complete and he can create bespoke designs to match particular wall colours, a client’s own design or theme, a style of wallpaper or to fit a specific size of wall space. Michael says: “I’ve always been fascinated by nature and in particular butterflies. To me, there is something captivating about that moment when a butterfly stops to let an onlooker admire its form. Using this as my stimulus, I wanted to see if I could create something that is both contemporary and

visually stimulating, which could be displayed on the wall in the home. I decided to create a flight of butterflies. I love the idea of bringing nature indoors and made a conscious decision to make a piece large enough and intricate enough to be looked at daily, but always offer something new to see.” As his art has become more widely regarded and word has started to spread, Michael is being asked to undertake an increasing number of bespoke commissions. The largest and most challenging piece of Butterfly Art that he has created so far measures 2m x 1.5m. This work featured at a charity auction earlier this year, which took place at

From a standing start in 2012 and then represented solely by Taylor Smith Gallery in Westerham, Michael now also has associations with 25 galleries across the UK and Ireland that represent his work. In addition to selling throughout the UK, Michael’s Butterfly Art has also been commissioned by clients in Stockholm, the US and Hong Kong.

This year, Michael’s work is being displayed in galleries in Berlin and Palma, Mallorca. New and exciting projects are underway and the launch of his long-awaited ‘Aquatic’ themed installation, made out of black acrylic (above) was debuted recently at The Affordable Art Fair in Battersea. butterflyart.co.uk

Guilty Gucci An aromatic Fougère, Gucci Guilty Pour Homme is a member of the first fragrance family invented, now worn by a new generation of scent lovers. Hedonistic and decadent, the scent opens with the piquant spice of Pink Pepper, a fragrance ingredient connected to intense flavor mixed with invigorating Italian Lemon. White floral with honey tones enriches the scent’s other heart notes, Neroli and French Lavender—the very flower the original playboy Casanova used to fragrance his love letters. Completing this modern expression of sensuality, mystery and intrigue are conjected in Patchouli which develops with hints of leather, green, woodiness and incense-like qualities. gucci.com

Both are tied with a ribbon trim that intensifies the mystery of their contents, while their caps echo the rounded lines of the pinnacles of Eastern monuments. Encens Mythique’s neo-oriental embraces its paradoxes: we expect it to be opulent and smouldering; it proves smoky and stirring. Bois Mystérieux is a radiant jasmine that dares to fuse with the distinguished, tenebrous strength of a deep leather and two of the most precious woods – cedar and patchouli. guerlain.com

In Memory of Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) One of the fashion industry’s most decorated designers, Karl Lagerfeld was renowned for his renaissance-like intelligence. His cutting-edge approach to style, coupled with his enigmatic persona and original perspective on fashion, made him a pop culture icon.

One of the most acclaimed fashion designers in the world, Karl Lagerfeld was born in Hamburg, Germany. While he never revealed his true birthday, it’s been reported he was born on September 10, 1933. Known for his bold designs and constant reinvention, he was hailed in Vogue as the “unparalleled interpreter of the mood of the moment.” Often lauded for his constant reinvention, he removed the “t” at the end of his last name early in his career in order to make it sound “more commercial.” Lagerfeld’s father, Christian, made his fortune by bringing condensed milk to Germany. Karl and his older sister, Martha, and a half sister, Thea, grew up in a wealthy home. Intellectual activity was encouraged at the Lagerfeld home. His mother, Elizabeth, was an accomplished violin player and talk at the dinner table often included subjects such as religious philosophy.

082-084 UCP Lagerfelt D43.indd 83

When Adolf Hitler rose to power in the 1930s, the Lagerfelds moved to a rural area of northern Germany, where, as Karl would later recount, he was cut off from any knowledge about the Nazis. From an early age, Lagerfeld expressed an interest in design and fashion. As a child he often cut out pictures from fashion magazines. He was also known to be critical of what others wore to school. But it wasn’t until his teen years, after his family had returned to Hamburg, that Lagerfeld immersed himself in the world of high fashion. Sensing his future lay elsewhere, 14-year-old Lagerfeld made the bold decision, with the blessing of his parents, to move to Paris. He’d been there just two years when he submitted a series of sketches and fabric samples to a design competition. He ended up taking first place in the coat category and meeting another winner, Yves Saint Laurent, who would become a close friend. Soon, Lagerfeld

had full-time work with French designer Pierre Balmain, first as a junior assistant, and later as an apprentice. It was a demanding position, and the young designer remained in it for three years. He took work as a creative director with another fashion house before finally, in 1961, striking out on his own. Good work soon followed, with Lagerfeld designing collections for Chloe, Fendi (where he was brought on to oversee the company’s fur line) and others. Lagerfeld became known in the fashion industry for his innovative, inthe-moment styles. But Lagerfeld also had an appreciation for the past, and he often shopped in flea markets, finding old wedding dresses to deconstruct and reimagine. By the 1980s, Karl Lagerfeld was a major star in the fashion world. He was a favorite among the press, who loved to chronicle his changing tastes and social life. Lagerfeld kept company with other major stars, including his good friend Andy Warhol. During his career he developed a sort of hired gun reputation for jumping from one

label to the next, and also put together a track record of success that few designers can match. At Chanel in the early 1980s, he did what few thought possible: he returned what was perceived to be a near-dead brand back to life with a revamped ready-to-wear fashion line. Around that time Lagerfeld launched his own label, in 1984, which he built around the idea of what he described as “intellectual sexiness.” Over the years, the brand developed a reputation for quality tailoring with bold ready-to-wear pieces like cardigan jackets in bright colors. In 2005 Lagerfeld sold the label to Tommy Hilfiger. Lagerfeld began slowing down as he advanced into his mid-80s. He sparked concern by not appearing at the end of his Chanel shows in Paris in early 2019, a development the house attributed to his being “tired.” Days later, on February 19, 2019, it was announced that the legendary designer had passed away. He leaves behind a legendary legacy as a man that influenced the fashion industry for almost a century, and a giant figure who had an unapologetic take on life.

Best of Both Worlds Stella McCartney Women’s Spring 2019 Collection combines masculine and feminine elements.

Quintessential Stella codes; masculine tailoring, delicate lace and unexpected prints; a graceful touch of animal skin-free-skin in a color palette that celebrates spring, with sand and summery whites, pinks and blues. Combined embroidery techniques fused into singular styles. Broderie Anglaise and eyelet embellishment inspired by antique linens become dresses. Polished short hemlines are paired with super soled trainers elongating the legs.

Timeless Couture Givenchy’s Men’s Fall-Winter 2019/20 collection brims with maverick individualism of the nineties.

This standalone collection showcases Givenchy’s new vision of a complete, day to evening wardrobe brimming with contrast, eclectic pairings. Recast in a modernized way, the mood of the era comes through in a series of color-blocked suits; embellished pieces in embroidered leather underscore a sense of specialness. Sleek and generous shapes rooted in the Seventies mingle with transparency, iridescence, bold texture and innovative treatments. Drawing from past and present, Clare Waight Keller builds character through volume, mixing lean lines with loose and oversized pieces. Slim suit jackets and boxy coats pair with carefree flares or loosen up with karate trousers; iridescence and bold hues of violet, fuchsia and electric blue mix with more classic shades of black, navy, and camel; compelling textures include crinkled

088-089 Givenchy D43.indd 88

leather, bonded fabric, and panels of stubbly microglass hand-beading. White plastron shirts are given the couture treatment. Traditional checks are tailored into coats and jackets with mother-of-pearl buttons and occasionally embellished with leopard spots. A waffled coat in bonded wool reverses from a black and white motif to lustrous black ‘raffia’-textured wool. Elsewhere, a windbreaker in couture technical fabric has the sheen of moiré; a white jacket shines with transparent sequins, puffers layer atop one another and a hybrid garment, the down parka, offers the Givenchy man a new means of expression — as do “collage” shirts made from signature Givenchy prints, including this season’s ‘Pegasus’ theme, or graphic text t-shirts and outerwear. givenchy.com

Layered Apparel The Oscar de la Renta Fall 2019 collection celebrates the riches behind the next door.

Travel is what’s animating Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia at Oscar de la Renta now. An October trip to Dubai to meet clients set them on their path for Fall. The idea is less about a specific place than it is about celebrating the riches beyond the next closed door. That’s why the MosqueCathedral of Córdoba, Spain, was chosen as the reference point for the F19 set. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia liked its layers of history, both Islamic and Christian in which, Oscar De la Renta liked too. The show opened with an extended riff on tweeds, menswear checks, and spice colors, true to the house heritage. Daywear cycled into eveningwear via a series of

094-095 Oscar De La Renta D43.indd 95

carpet prints and carpet jacquards. The print dress was representative of the softer, lighter garments that are proving successful for Kim and Garcia among a younger clientele. Antique carpets were the dominant motif in the after-dark section as seen on the short cocktail number trailing fringe, on a strapless wrap with the ease of a sarong, and on a sleeveless column in tufted fil coupe with a train that traced the flower borders. Texture and pattern played key roles in the other evening gowns, which combined black tulle with jewel-tone laser-cut silk velvet. oscardelarenta.com

Through a fabulous presentation display, made possible thanks to the previously unseen archives from its heritage, Guerlain invites you to discover the World and Wonders of the perfumer. Alchemist, botanist, explorer, creator: the Perfumer is a fascinating, mysterious being, the fruit of whose work – the creation of a fragrance – has unique qualities. A scent leaves a lasting impression, arouses emotions, evokes sensations. Jicky, L’Heure Bleue, Mitsouko, Shalimar, Vétiver, Samsara, Mon Guerlain, Santal Royal etc. are all iconic creations with the ability to take the imagination on a journey through time and space. To nourish his art, the Perfumer explores the world on the hunt for the most remarkable natural raw ingredients; elements that distinguish a true fragrance trail. From the founder, Pierre-FrançoisPascal Guerlain, exploring Imperial Russia in a stage coach on the search for his birchessence, through Jacques Guerlain and his Indonesian Benzoin, to Thierry Wasser and his Indian Vetiver, for which he developed a sustainable and ethical supply channel, the perfumer leads us to magical lands where dream and reality, the conscious and the imaginary become one, all the better to blend together. The new Guerlain Parfumeur boutique, served by an exceptional heritage, showcases the richness and unique profusion Guerlain’s world: 110 fragrances are available out of the 1,100 created since 1828. The interior is designed by the Milan studio Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, which since 2012 has been responsible for the world concept of Delvaux stores (including the recent projects in Brussels, Tokyo and Milan). A concept that narrates a tradition, the savoir-faire and, at the same time, the modern creativity of the brand in a language that is never the same, but able to dialogue with the identity of each city. The new London boutique is located at 47 New Bond Street, previously the home of the renowned shoemaker Pinet. Designed in 1906 by William Flockhart, the building is a veritable architectural jewel, famous for its superb facade and period boiserie. The development of the pre-existing artistic heritage played a key role in the interior design project. In fact the new interior aims to highlight

104-113 Shops D43.indd 111

the characteristics of the space and its unique position on the street, dominated by majestic windows with bronze mouldings. The boiserie becomes the boutique’s iconic element: black with a matt finish, it acts as a framework for the refinement of Delvaux creations. A shade used exclusively in this London space, pointing up its elegance and personality. The curved shapes of the boiserie create a refined contrast to the square geometry of the shelves and consoles and their pale gold finish. Black boiserie also marks the majestic staircase leading to the basement floor, where the dichotomy between the white of Delvaux’s iconic wardrobe and the dark tones of the room immediately stands out. The only notes of colour inside the boutique are the MSE - Marta Sala Edition – sofas designed by Vudafieri-Saverino Partners, which bring to mind the red of the British flag, and the carpets by Yan Kath. delvaux.com

Jimmy Choo Manama Jimmy Choo SS19 collection boldly highlights the form and beauty of the shoe and the woman who wears it. Influences this season include the sculptures of Brancusi, and the dramatic draping inspired by the 80s Parisian couture. The result is a seductive interplay of form and fluidity released by carefully chosen fabrications that are simultaneously luxurious and self-possessed. This is the collection for standing tall, unafraid and unbowed, that was the creative director Sandra Choi’s portrayal for Jimmy Choo SS19 Collection. Contemporary Gaze A native of Casablanca, Oussama Mahasssine’s artistic arc extends over different disciplines, ranging from sculpture to painting. A daring yet relevant artist, he is part of a new generation of Moroccan artists whose ambition shines through in his exceptional portraits.

When did you discover your calling in life as an artist? I discovered my passion for the arts at a very early age. During my first year at school, I had already started displaying signs of an artistic talent. It started showing more prominently more and more over time. This eventually culminated in my acceptance and enrollment in the Ecole SupĂŠrieure des Beaux Arts in Casablanca.

Your portraits focus heavily on traditional African culture. Why did you choose that subject?

02

114-117 Artist Qussama D43.indd 115

Being an African and a Moroccan, this subject matter comes very naturally to me. But in addition to that, I would say that this subject matter is rich not only in culture, but even in its lines, its shapes, and its colors. I find it truly inspiring.

What material do you usually work with to give your paintings such a unique look? I typically use spray cans, ink, and adhesives. I use all of this material to capture the essence in my portraits. I also use acrylic, which is a type of paint mixture.

What emotions do you hope to evoke when people see your work? Portraits are a very ancient and important art form. I personally find that the formulations of the human face and its expressions can be an amazing source of inspiration and creativity. When I do a portrait, I try to transport some of that essence into my work. Even though it may be vague and full of mysteries, it still carries many meanings.

What was the most challenging painting you made? Every project presents its own unique challenges, but it also offers an opportunity to learn and grow as an artist. To me, the most difficult projects I’ve had to do were sculptures. It’s a threedimensional art form that requires a lot of precision and time.

Who were the artists that had the most impact on your style?

I would love to collaborate with a number of American and Asian artists. I have noticed that they’re the ones in particular who rebel against conformity in their art and go outside the realm of normality in their works.

Would you describe your art as modern or traditional? Although some artists tend to mix between the two these days, I can safely say that I belong to the modern art school.

How would you describe the art scene in Morocco?

More than artists, I’m influenced by the art movements. For example, pop art and fauvism have had the biggest impact on me as an artist. I also like other similar art movements but those have been the ones to shape my art the most.

Today, the Moroccan art community is witnessing a major change. We are seeing large murals in our streets. And with the opening of Rabat’s Museum, citizens are now able to learn and experience Moroccan art.

Are there any current artists you admire that you would like to collaborate with?

The Chainsmokers are never getting older in this eclectic house by Peti Lau. 01

It is customary to say that the house is the mirror of the soul. Considering that this is a totally true statement, it is natural that a man who’s achieved fame and wealth mixing music would be drawn to a house that’s a hodgepodge of architectural styles. “All we know” is that the home that Alex Pallone half of The Chainsmokers, a Grammy-winning DJ duo—bought two years ago was built in the 1930s. In the 1980s and 90s, renovations were made to the house, and this added a dash of industrial edge. The mashup appealed to Mr. Pall, but when it came to decorating it, he sought professional help. So, the magic happens: a designer capitalizes on her rock-star client ’s open mind and art collection, and dials the décor energy to the top.

Alex Pall turned to Peti Lau to help him decorate his Hollywood Hills house. Mr. Pall had already installed the nature-themed wallpaper and the orange-velvet a couch in the family room when Ms. Lau began decorating the house. She continued the interior-jungle theme, as she called it, with a natural-fiber coffee table that evokes dried versions of the leaves on the wall, and leopard and tribal-print pillows. The orange, green and blue palette of the painting by Hassan Hajjaj (the Andy Warhol of Morocco, said Ms. Lau) recurs in trippy throw pillows from Silken Favours and the vintage Turkish rug laid over a larger jute rug. “A classic antique rug is a nice way to stabilize all the stuff that’s going on, she added.

A very unique detail of this living room is the furniture, namely a sideboard from Essential Home brand in particular: inspired by the 007 films, Monocles is a sideboard built entirely out of solid walnut wood, accented by its goldplated brass front doors that feature a protruding circular design. These circles are then engraved to the back and side of the unit, giving it an extreme character and high-end look. It is a perfect furniture piece for retro lovers or midcentury admirers, giving the knurling knobs on the drawers or the tapered legs. essentialhome.eu

Precious Pebbles One of the first commercial products, Amber has been capturing the world’s imagination for centuries. Possessing the unique ability to encompass and preserve the organic materials it encounters, amber continues to be a source of fascination to this day.

Amber is actually not a stone, but rather amorphous, fossilized tree sap. Amber comes from the fossilized resin that lived tens of millions of years ago in trees. It is normally a golden yellow to golden orange, and ranges from transparent to semi translucent. It can also be dyed many colors. Amber was one of the first substances used for personal adornment. In fact, decorated pieces of amber have been found in remains from the Stone Age. The stones were used as amulets and talismans before, during, and since the ancient Greeks. Amber rates a 2.5 on the hardness scale but is reasonably tenacious and workable- its softness makes it relatively easy to carve. Since prehistoric times, amber has been used for religious objects. It was believed to have talismanic properties, and many ancient people buried amber objects and amulets with their dead to protect them in the afterlife.

The Romans called amber succinum, as it was rightly believed to be from tree sap. It was also used in the Neolithic times as an ornamental material. Amber was brought all the way to the Alps from the Baltic coast- a huge distance for those days, which gives us an idea of how important the stone was in that time. Amber is known for producing an electrical charge when rubbed. In fact, the Greek name for amber is electron, which the word electricity is derived from. Sacred to the sun god Apollo, amber was once thought to be congealed sunlight. Amber was also viewed as tears- for the Vikings, and for the Greeks, tears over the death of Phaeton. Amber may contain insects, (occasionally frogs and lizards too) moss, or pine needles that have been trapped for millions of years in the resin, since the resin was sticky. Air bubbles may give amber a cloudy appearance but heating in oil will take them away. The biggest deposits of amber

are in the Baltic region, particularly along the coast of Poland. Amber is also found in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, France, Spain, Canada, Romania, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Burma, and Italy. Amber has medicinal uses attributed to it but is used nowadays primarily in jewelry. It has been imitated by synthetic resin, glass, and plastic. Amber has very low density. A true test as to whether or not you have a genuine piece of amber is to put it in a solution of kitchen salt and water. This is a common test to check amber as plastic will sink, and amber will float. A commonly encountered kind of amber is called “reconstructed amber,” where small pieces of amber are compressed under heat to form a larger piece. Amber softens and starts to decompose at 150 degrees Fahrenheit and gives off a scent like the resin of pine trees. It has been used in the West, the Arab world, and the Far East, for carved items,

figurines, pipe pieces, brooches, perfume bottles, and cigarette holders. Amber supposedly brings mental and emotional strength and is highly calming. The stone can be cleaned using warm water and a soft cloth. You can use the cloth to rub olive oil on it to restore the polish. Never use ultrasonic or steam cleaners to clean amber, as it will shatter. Also, never leave amber in direct sunlight, or any place where it might be exposed to sudden temperature changes or chemicals, as its finish will dull. Amber has been used as jewelry since the Stone Age, from 13,000 years ago. Amber ornaments have been found in Mycenaean tombs and elsewhere across Europe. To this day it is used in the manufacture of smoking and glassblowing mouthpieces. Amber’s place in culture and tradition lends it a tourism value. Palanga Amber Museum is dedicated to the fossilized resin.

Unique History Located in Wadi Al-Qura, a famed and important valley since ancient times, Al-Ula city contains areas of extraordinary human and natural heritage. Along with its landscape of lush oasis valley and spectacular sandstone mountains, Al-Ula is a primary example of why Saudi Arabia has been described as a crossroads of civilization.

01 Elephant rock, one of the main attractions in Al-Ula 02 Mada’in Saleh, Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site

Al-Ula city is approximately 325km north of Madinah, 750km from Makkah, 1,100km from Riyadh and 110km southwest of Tayma. Al-Ula is. There has been human activity in Al-Ula for thousands of years. It was a natural crossroads for commercial activity along the Incense Route from Southern Arabia into Egypt and beyond. Water was key to the area’s prosperity. NorthWest Saudi Arabia is dotted with oases for weary travellers, and the Al-Ula Valley itself was a popular place for them to rest, commune, trade and recharge. In the first millennium BCE, the Dadanites and Lihyanites built ancient Dadan (modern Al-Khuraybah) in stone, and also left sculpture, inscriptions and other achievements. The most famous of Al-Ula’s settlements is Saudi Arabia’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hegra/

Al-Hijr (modern Mada’in Salih), which was the most important Nabataean city in the south of the Nabataean Kingdom from at least the 1st century BCE. It is best known for more than 100 beautiful and remarkably well-preserved tombs, with elaborate facades cut into or out of rock formations. The Nabataeans were also sophisticated water engineers, creating at least 130 wells. Here and elsewhere in the Al-Ula region, archaeological investigations continue to unearth remarkable artistic, architectural and engineering achievements, providing fascinating insights into ancient ways of life. Al-Ula has several distinct environmental regions within and amongst its valleys and mountains. The centrepiece is the Wadi al-Qura - today the Al-Ula Valley - where the oasis was created and thousands of date palm trees are cultivated.

Al-Ula comprises distinct subregions - urban, rural cultivated, and rural badiya (desert). The last inhabitants of Al-Ula’s Old Town (Al-Dirah) moved out in the 1980s, following the establishment of the modern town adjacent to it. The modern settlement of Al-Ula now encompasses the Old Town within its limits. The most iconic attractions of Al-Ula are its cultural heritage sites, which are varied and represent millennia of successive settlements. The harra lava fields feature numerous prehistoric sites with lithic artefacts, stone structures, petroglyphs and inscriptions. Sites dating from the Palaeolithic - Stone Age - period (more than 200,000 years ago) demonstrate the long range of time for which human populations may have used and occupied this landscape, and which are significant and relatively unknown sites in the region. Across

Al-Ula at numerous sites there are hundreds of inscriptions, in Aramaic, Dadanitic, ‘Thamudic’, Minaic, Nabataean, Greek, Latin and Arabic. Jabal ‘Ikmah has been identifi ed as one of the largest open ‘libraries’ in Saudi Arabia and perhaps the most significant epigraphic site, containing hundreds of inscribed and relief inscriptions, mainly in Dadanitic and/or Lihyanic. Al-Aqra’a, a mountain north of the Al-Ula Valley, there are more than 450 early Arabic inscriptions. At Naqsh Zuhayr, to the east, others remain, including one of the oldest of the Islamic era, dated 24AH. This corpus and the thousands of pre-Arabic inscriptions make Al-Ula a natural place to study the development of the language. There are countless other sites for inscriptions and petroglyphs, currently being systematically documented.

Delectable Experiences Exploring culinary passions and nostalgic Italian cuisine with Giorgio Maggiono, Chef de Cuisine at Dolce Vita, Mandarin Oriental, Singapore.

What are some of the ingredients or sauces that we will always find in your kitchen? Your all-time favorites?

I would say I am in between balancing both as I always like to introduce traditional tastes of the Italian cuisine with a modern twist.

In my kitchen, you will find three essential ingredients: fresh herbs, extra virgin olive oil and my personal favourite, Parmigiano Reggiano.

When did you realize this was the career path for you?

What would you consider to be your signature dish or the one you are most proud of? One of my signature dishes is Rombo, which is available in Dolce Vita’s menu. Turbot is a highquality fish and I have accompanied it with a medley of other ingredients to balance its flavours nicely. How would you rank Italian cuisine among other fine dining cuisines? What makes it unique? Every cuisine has its own characteristic. Italian fare usually falls back to the authentic tastes of home and evokes a lot of nostalgia through food.

What was the most pleasant dining experience you have had at other restaurants? That has to be Three Michelin-starred Chef Enrico Crippa of Piazza Duomo in Italy. It was an unbelievable experience as quality and techniques were well presented in the dishes. Another restaurant in Shanghai that doles out one of the best Italian food is 8 1/2 Otto E Mezzo Bombana.

Would you describe yourself as a modern chef or as a traditionalist?

154-157. Bon Appetit D43.indd 154

I’ve always had the passion for cooking. It started when I was young where I would learn from my mother every day in the kitchen. From then on, I never looked back and decided to make it into my career.

Do you have any influences or mentors that have shaped your methods in the kitchen? I would say Chef Alessandro Salvatico, in Armani Hotel Dubai, and Chef Jerome Lagarde, in At.Mosphere Dubai. They are role models that I look up to who believed in me wholeheartedly. I’ve learned a lot while working with them.

What advice would you give a novice chef who is just starting this career? Be determined and passionate about what you are doing, as you will be marrying this job. Always be open to new influences and changes around the world. It will be a bonus if you love travelling, as this will broaden your horizon and give you new perspectives required as a chef. mandarinoriental.com/singapore

Cultural Cuisine One of Mexico’s most renowned culinary artists, Chef Jorge Vallejo has been impressing patrons at his fine dining establishment Quintonil for years. With a reputation that precedes him, it’s no wonder that Mahonia, Bahrain’s first fine dining degustation restaurant, extended an invitation to the talented chef to bring a taste of Mexico to the Kingdom. He speaks to Durrah about the recipe for inspiration and his unforgettable Four Hands Dinner at Mahonia.

Can you tell us about the Four Hands Dinner at Mahonia? What went into the 10-stage tasting menu and how was the overall experience? What I tried to do at Mahonia was to represent México as much as possible in the Middle East. The 10-course menu allowed me to give people the most similar experience to dining at Quintonil. I really enjoyed discovering new ingredients from the region with amazing quality and flavor such as dates and black lime. There’s also a great variety of sauces that I, of course, brought back with me to México so I can keep exploring them and try to incorporate them into my dishes.

What was your impression of Mahonia? We fell in love with the restaurant. It’s so beautiful and we always felt at home because of the warm people that are working there. They have a great team and we left very grateful for all the attention. It’s definitely one of the most beautiful places we’ve worked at.

158-161 Mahonia D43.indd 159

What made you decide on Bahrain as your next destination? We received the invitation from Mahonia and for us, in México, the Middle East is kind of “unknown”. This is why we were very curious and felt encouraged to go and discover new places. We also wanted to represent our country and share as much as possible of our Mexican culture.

When did you first realize you wanted a career in the culinary arts? I wanted to be a chef from a very young age. I was 16 years old and out of school. I was in need of a job so I decided to enter a restaurant and from that point on, I always knew I was going to be a chef.

What were the challenges facing you when you first opened Quintonil? Since the very beginning and even until now, we face challenges every day. We knew when we first opened that we wanted Quintonil to have high standards, so every decision had to be carefully made, from choosing the venue to choosing the

furniture and plates. It was difficult because we were creating from scratch. Then after we opened, we constantly evolved, realizing that we had different needs over time. It was a challenge to keep evolving without losing track.

What would you recommend to a first-time customer at Quintonil? Patrons should go in with an open mind so they can fully enjoy the experience. We always welcome their feedback so we can make them as comfortable as possible. We want to welcome them as customers but say goodbye to them as friends.

What are your favorite ingredients to work with? That’s a very difficult question for me. I don’t want to compare myself to a painter but it’s like asking one what their favorite color is. To me, favoring only one ingredient is like missing the opportunity to create more. I consider every recipe I work with as my favorite, until I move on to the next one. However, we do try to keep it seasonal. For example, we are offering more seafood variety right now because it’s the season for good quality crabs and fish. When spring comes, we will offer dishes with fresh vegetables. We only use the highest quality ingredients. That’s part of the beauty of being a chef, you have many things to work with.

What qualities set Mexican cuisine apart from other cuisines? Mexican cuisine is diverse because the country itself is diverse. We have a lot of sea and many forests. We get great produce from the farms. When we get asked what is the flavor of Mexican cuisine, we say that we work with our heritage the most. Mexican food is very ancient. I would

158-161 Mahonia D43.indd 160

compare it with Chinese or Indian cuisine because they also have cuisines that are as deep as their culture. It’s very important to me to showcase this part of our culture. 06

Other than Mexican, are there any other cuisines that you fell in love with? I always learn something new when I visit different parts of the world. It’s a great source of inspiration for me. For example, when I’m in Japan, I would try to learn about their techniques for preparing fish. When I visit France, I’m interested in their sophisticated techniques with vegetables. Even here in the Middle East, which is renowned for their use of various spices.

In your opinion, what are the skills required to be a successful chef? You have to be more open with your feelings. Aim to be a perfectionist. Have sensibility in the way you see everything. Inspiration can come from anywhere. It could be from a trip, from childhood, from chatting with people, or by art.

Speaking of inspiration, who were the biggest inspirations in your career? There have been many. For instance, my grandmother taught me how to make food with love. I also get inspiration from other chefs. For example, when I see how they approach their area. Inspiration can come from sculptures or paintings when you’re visiting a museum. Perhaps the colors would inspire you in your plating. Or if you smell something you really like, it could inspire you to experiment with aromas. Inspiration is everywhere. quintonil.com

Living and working in New York, Fabian has carved out his reputation by fusing the fields of art and science, creating images appealing to heart and mind. Constantly exploring the boundaries between time, space and reality, he creates fictional moments and spaces, that look and feel absolutely real, yet aren’t. Through this, Oefner dissects the different components of reality and gives us a clearer understanding of how we perceive and define it. For the first time, Fabian Oefner has created one of his highly acclaimed Disintegrating images with a real car. And not just any car: it’s the iconic Lamborghini Miura SV from 1972. The creation of the image took almost two years. During that time, Oefner and his team travelled to the workshops surrounding the Lamborghini Factory in Sant’Agata/ Italy to capture each piece of the car as it was being restored. The final image, consisting of more than 1’500 individual photographs shows a new level of hyper-reality, that is unprecedented in the artist’s previous work.

162-164 MAD D43.indd 163

“It had always been my dream to create an art piece with a real car,” says Fabian Oefner. “One day, a friend said to me, ‘I have a Miura and I’m having it restored. Why don’t you take the opportunity to create one of your Disintegrating images?’ And of course, he didn’t have to ask me twice to work on one of my favorite cars, to get to touch every single screw and piece of that legend, and put them into a final composition... that’s a dream come true!” He added: “It took two years and thousands of photographs to realize this work, from the first time the idea came to me to the final printed image. I depended on the restoration times of the workshop and the challenge was to always keep in mind the vision that I had at the beginning.” The image is available in two sizes: 140x70cm limited to 18 prints + 2 artist editions, and 230x115cm limited to 8 prints + 2 artist editions. madgallery.net

01 The Bentayga Speed is the most powerful Bentayga produced so far 02 The ceramic brakes are the largest and most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley 03 The Bentayga Speed goes from 0-100km/h in 3.9 seconds

Bentley Bentayga Speed The Bentayga Speed features an enhanced 635 PS (626 bhp) version of the renowned 6.0-litre W12 engine that delivers a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h) and 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 3.9 seconds. The performance pinnacle of the Bentayga range, Speed is equipped with four on-road Drive Dynamics modes: Comfort at one extreme, and Bentley and Sport at the other, with Custom for customers who opt to create their own driving set-up. Bentley Dynamic Ride is the world’s first electric active roll control technology that utilises an unrivalled 48V system. This system instantly counteracts lateral rolling forces when cornering and ensures maximum tyre contact to deliver class-leading cabin stability, ride comfort and exceptional handling. The Bentayga Speed’s ceramic brakes are the largest and most powerful ever fitted to a Bentley, with a maximum braking toque of 6,000 Nm and engineered to withstand temperatures up to 1,000 °C. They also save more than 20 kg over iron brakes. Designed, engineered and handcrafted in Great Britain, the Bentayga Speed is the most powerful and performance-oriented Bentayga to date. It builds on a long tradition of Speed models that was born with the Continental GT in 2007 and pushes the boundaries of Bentayga performance further since claiming the production SUV record at the gruelling Pikes Peak International Hill Climb last year. With a top speed of 190 mph, the Bentayga Speed is our most powerful and performanceoriented variant to date. To match the elevated levels of performance, the Bentayga Speed sports a purposeful exterior look. Dark-tint headlights, body-coloured side skirts and a striking tailgate spoiler hint at the SUV’s performance credentials. Dark-tint radiator and

164-175. Automotive D43.indd 166

bumper grilles, a unique 22-inch wheel design available in three finishes and Speed signature badging add to the sporting design cues. Inside, the Bentayga Speed introduces a dramatic design theme. This includes elegantly crafted ‘swooshes’ around the door and door grab, on the edge of the seat cushions and backrest bolsters, and on the lower console; a new contrast stitching on the diamond quilting; discreet Speed badging; a Speed illuminated treadplate signature; and the use of Alcantara materials for the first time in a Bentayga. As with all Bentaygas, the all-wheel-drive Speed is equipped with Electronic Differential Lock and up to eight Drive Dynamics modes. Bespoke engineering revisions to the Sport mode provide a more dynamic drive, while a greater exhaust character and firmer suspension tune further increase driver engagement. Customers can personalise the Bentayga Speed to their own requirements with a range of exclusive options. Among them are carbon ceramic brakes, 22-way adjustable front seats with massage function, carbon fibre fascia panels, Bentley rearseat entertainment (RSE) and mood lighting. Go-anywhere driving ability and imperious luxury are the hallmarks of the Bentley Bentayga. Powerful, individual and exquisite in equal measure, the Bentayga is for those who demand luxury without compromise. The multi-awardwinning Bentayga set the luxury SUV benchmark, offering customers the ultimate Grand Touring experience unrestricted by landscape or conditions. Sculpted with an elegant, timeless execution, the Bentayga’s style perfectly balances athleticism with confidence. bentleymotors.com

March 2019

Aston Martin Valkyrie With the first Aston Martin Valkyrie prototypes beginning to take shape, now is the time to reveal the full performance figures delivered by Aston Martin Valkyrie’s hybrid powertrain. The heart of the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s powertrain is its clean sheet Cosworth-built 65° naturally aspirated 6.5-litre V12 engine. Evoking the spine-tingling, ultra-high-revving F1TM engines of the 1990s, but benefitting from two decades of progress in design, material and manufacturing expertise, it sets exceptional new standards for maximum rpm and weight. With a certified peak power output of 1,000bhp (or 153.8 bhp-per-litre) at 10,500rpm, it can continue on to a maximum 11,100rpm. This is a world first for a naturally-aspirated, emissions-compliant road car. Peak torque is 740Nm at 7,000rpm. These peak outputs are purely delivered by the ICE (Internal Combustion Engine), with a further performance boost delivered by the battery hybrid system. When describing the powertrain of a traditional road car, or even a conventional hybrid road car, it is easy to separate the main components and describe their individual roles. In the Aston Martin Valkyrie, where the design and engineering

of each and every part has been approached with the meticulous ethos of Red Bull Advanced Technologies, out of their Formula One® DNA for maximum efficiency and ultimate performance, many key components do more than one job. Using the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s powertrain as an example, both the V12 engine and gearbox casing act as stressed members of the vehicle structure. The latter provides rear suspension mounting points, while also helping provide even greater structural rigidity and eliminating the weight of an additional rear subframe. The battery pack integrates all relevant subsystems and serves as the carrier for the vehicle’s power electronics, while in addition to its Power Boost and Energy Recovery System functions, the E-Motor aids the mechanical performance of the gearbox. Aston Martin Valkyrie exemplifies intelligent engineering wherever you look. A KERS-style boost system akin to those fitted to F1TM cars, the Aston Martin Valkyrie’s hybrid system has been developed by two main technical partners; Integral Powertrain Ltd, who supplied the bespoke electric motor, and Rimac for the lightweight hybrid battery system.

As a result, the full hybrid system contributes an additional 160bhp of power and a further 280Nm of available torque with the certified max power output of Aston Martin Valkyrie standing at a stunning 1,160bhp @ 10,500rpm. Equally, with the full hybrid system, peak torque will stand at 900Nm @ 6,000rpm. Vice President & Special Vehicle Operations Officer, David King said, “Aston Martin Valkyrie is set to be the ultimate hypercar in the automotive world and these performance figures underline that statement. Red Bull Advanced Technologies, Cosworth, Rimac and Integral Powertrain Ltd. have been fantastic partners in the development of this powertrain, ensuring that we have already created a hybrid system that is emissions-compliant and ready to begin fitting to our first physical prototypes. I am, as I’m sure the rest of the world is, incredibly excited to see and hear the first of these cars on track”. Development of the Aston Martin Valkyrie continues under the guidance of Aston Martin Lagonda, Red Bull Advanced Technologies and project partner AF Racing. astonmartin.com

Ferrari Portofino The perfect combination of performance, versatility and luxury Ferrari Portofino, a blend of outright performance and versatility in addition to a level of driving pleasure and on-board comfort that is unparalleled in the market. The Ferrari Portofino was name after one of the most charming villages on the Italian Riviera, the epitome of stylish elegance. The car represents the most versatile model in the brand’s range, as it was designed by the Ferrari engineers to be driven every day. The Portofino effortlessly converts from an authentic ‘berlinetta’ coupé to a drop-top capable of delivering a unique Ferrari soundtrack and unrivalled driving pleasure in everyday situations. While the Portofino’s exterior exudes a stylish compactness and instantly marks out its GT vocation, its cabin too has also been carefully designed and developed. The Ferrari Design team pinpointed certain specific essential requirements, the foremost of these being formal and functional coherency between the car’s exterior and its interior, weight reduction and creating more space for occupants. Seen in plain view, the cockpit’s symmetrical arrangement and the improved rear seat space are clear. The dashboard architecture in particular features two shells, which incorporate all of the technical components, and a bridge which visually connects the instrument panel area with the central tunnel which, itself, was clearly conceived to act as a

164-175. Automotive D43.indd 171

divider between driver and passenger. Lastly, the infotainment system functionalities are controlled via the 10.25” touchscreen located at the centre of the dash within easy reach of both driver and passenger. The successor of the Ferrari California, the Portofino has a V8 engine producing a massive 600 horsepower which allows it to accelerate from 0 to 200 km/h in just 10.8 seconds. Starting with the V8 power unit, which has won the outright International Engine of the Year award for two consecutive years in 2016 and 2017, Ferrari’s engineers worked on several different fronts to deliver a power output of 600 cv at 7500 rpm, the equivalent of 156 cv/l, introducing new mechanical components as well as specific engine management software. One of the Ferrari Portofino’s most impressive features is that it is significantly lighter than the California T. To achieve this, the Prancing Horse engineers worked extensively on every aspect of the car. Other areas on which weight was shaved off were various components of the electronics, engine and exterior. The result is that the car is 80 kg lighter than the California T. ferrari.com

Maserati Levante MY19 Maserati installed an upgraded version of its powerful Twin Turbo V8 engine under the bonnet of the Levante to deliver two of the fastest SUVs ever built. It is for the first time that Maserati mates the mighty Twin Turbo V8 with its Q4 Intelligent AllWheel Drive system. The V8 engine is an evolution of the power unit fitted in the flagship Quattroporte GTS. It maintains the same 3.8-litre capacity and the V900 architecture but has been re-engineered and significantly upgraded to deliver significantly higher power output, from 550hp in the Levante GTS to 590hp in the Levante Trofeo. Peak torque has climbed to 730 Nm at 2,250 to 5,000 rpm on both versions. Like any modern Maserati petrol engine, the Twin Turbo V8 has been developed in cooperation with Ferrari and is assembled in its state-of-the art factory in Maranello. This is the Maserati engine with the highest specific output in history (145-156 hp/litre), Modena’s most powerful V8 ever and second only to the glorious aspirated V12 that was fitted in the road legal version of the Maserati MC12. The mighty Twin Turbo V8 engine has been revised to accommodate the Q4 Intelligent AllWheel Drive system. In order to make space for the drive shaft towards the front axle, Maserati designed a new crankcase with specific crankshaft assembly, new oil pump and auxiliary belt, as well

164-175. Automotive D43.indd 172

as a different electric wiring layout. With 430hp of power at 5,750 rpm and 580 Nm of torque in Sport mode between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm, Levante S delivers a powerful driving experience. In Normal driving mode, the torque rises to 500 Nm in the lower rev range, reaching the 580 Nm maximum at 5,000 rpm. The design concept of the Levante combines coupé lines with interior space for five people and exceptional aerodynamic efficiency. The Maserati of SUVs is instantly recognisable from a distance, thanks to its imposing grille, which was inspired by the sensational Alfieri concept, but also pays homage to historic Maserati cars like the Tipo 60 Birdcage. The silhouette flows along the side of the car from the feline headlights to the characteristic Maserati rear pillar, creating a coupé look that is enhanced by frameless doors – a characteristic feature of modern Maserati cars. The muscular shape of the rear haunches underscores the car’s genuinely Italian style. This unmistakable Levante design has reached new levels of sportiness in the new top of the range GTS and Trofeo versions, which have also been a source of inspiration for the restyling of the GranSport exterior. The elegant, sport-oriented restyling is focused on the lower front fascia and the rear bumper.

The interior design of the Levante is focused either on luxury or sportiness, respectively in the GranLusso and GranSport trims. The spacious cabin blends innovative solutions, such as the state-of-the art infotainment system, with precious materials like the newly introduced full-grain Pieno Fiore natural leather. Abundant space for five passengers, fine selection of premium materials, state-of-the art human machine interface and front - rear passenger compartments in sheer harmony are some of the first class features in the cabin of the Levante. The dashboard is designed around the 8.4” Maserati Touch Control Plus (MTC+) display, which features updated graphics and improved A/C functions for MY19. The central console neatly accommodates a new gearshift lever and a revised button cluster for the driving modes, the characteristic double rotary knob for basic infotainment functions and the air suspension height setup switch. The Levante is second to none in its class in terms of interior space. The rear seats comfortably accommodate three passengers providing them generous headroom, with the two outer seats also offering maximum comfort and lateral restraint. maserati.com

Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ Mercedes-AMG launches its performance offering for the new GLE generation with the AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+. The new Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 4MATIC+ is powered by a 3.0-litre engine featuring twinturbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 320 kW (435 hp) and delivers maximum torque of 520 Nm (384 Ib/ft). Its EQ Boost starter generator provides an additional 16 kW of output plus 250 Nm of torque and fuels the 48 V on-board electrical system. The EQ Boost starter-alternator combines a starter motor and alternator in a powerful electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission. This innovation as well as the intelligent charging via an electric auxiliary compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger all have the same goal: to enhance the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics, but also to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. And this move has been a successful one: The GLE 53 4MATIC+ accelerates from zero to 100 km/h in just 5.3 seconds and achieves an electronically limited speed of 250 km/h. The AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT 9-speed automatic transmission (TCT = Torque-Clutch Transmission) ensures emotional gear shifting with extremely short shift times. It is optimally tuned to the engine

and promises agile pulling off typical of AMG as well as speedy shifting – regardless of an automatic or manual transmission via the steering wheel shift paddles, upshifts or downshifts are implemented instantly especially in the “Sport+” and in manual driving modes, where the transmission is very responsive. Multiple downshifting enables fast bursts of speed, while the double-clutching function makes shift operations acoustically more emotional. The GLE 53 4MATIC+ has seven drive programmes: The levels “Slippery”, “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport+” and “Individual” are complemented by two off-road-specific settings: “Trail” and

“Sand”. AMG DYNAMIC SELECT adapts important parameters such as the responsiveness of the engine and transmission, the characteristic curve of the accelerator and steering, the suspension damping or even the vehicle’s sound. Selected using the paddle in the centre console or the AMG steering wheel buttons, the programmes are then visualised in the instrument cluster and on the multimedia display. The GLE 53 4MATIC+ can be recognised by the characteristic red colour accents. This starts with the seats, fitted as standard with covers in ARTICO / microfibre DINAMICA man-made leather black with red contrasting topstitching. They not only offer optimal lateral support, but also have an AMG-specific design and “AMG” badge in the front seat backrest. The top part of the instrument panel is covered in ARTICO man-made leather. The black roof liner and the trim elements in aluminium brushed with light longitudinal grain underscore the sporty appearance. Further elements to individualise the interior include different leather seat covers and a wide range of high-quality trim elements, among other items. The carbon AMG trim elements impart a particularly sporty feel to the interior. mercedes-benz.com

Dior Tete De Mort Skull Ring In 18k Yellow Gold, Diamonds, Amethyst and Tsavorite Garnets Designed by the Creative Director of Dior Joaillerie, Victoire de Castellane, Tête de Mort is a symbolic collection that resonates the eternal spirit of sophistication in life. The couturier has given birth to three rings and three necklaces in yellow, rose and white gold from the Tête de Mort jewelry collection. Each piece from this collection recites a precious tale that is very much reserved and they do not reveal the all their secrets at the first glance. These jewels reinterpret the Latin phrases “Memento Mori” and “Carpe Diem”, two precepts that remind us to be able to sense and make use of every opportunity that comes every moment. dior.com

Published by Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco), ‘Awali: The Story of a Unique Township’ is the product of thorough research. The book documents the evolution of the Awali township from a simple settlement consisting of bunkhouses for Bapco employees to a well-planned urban community with modern landmarks. It highlights the township’s close links with Bapco, detailing how their growth occurred along the same timeline. The book provides ample information about Awali’s key historical landmarks, such as Awali Hospital, which was reported to be opened by His Highness Shaikh Salman, the grandfather of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. The

hospital had Bahrain’s first hyperbaric chamber, acquired to help Bapco’s diving department which was in charge of maintaining its tankers. Another key aspect covered in the book is Awali’s close connection with sports activities, being the location of Bahrain’s first bowling hall, which opened in 1962, and home to some of Bahrain’s renowned cricket, Bahrain’s premier golf clubs, and other sporting clubs today. The book even explains how Awali (which means ‘high place’ in Arabic) gained its name. It also lists all the major milestones that have shaped Awali’s history, from BAPCO’s establishment in 1929 to the recent BAPCO Aramco oil pipeline launch 2018.
