RODOWEL
Rodowel is a collection of cafĂŠ stools designed by Du Tai Huynh. The stool collection is inspired by geometric design structures of steel rods, wood and dowels. The wooden dowel legs are round on either side and connected to a steel rod frame that gives a soft feel yet solid structure. By combining precise machinery tubebending processes with reclaimed wood, the chair celebrates no only beauty but character as well. Rodowel is very flexible- it can be used in a range of different settings and the contrast of materials used make it a very versatile choice.

MATERIAL
The dowels and steel rods have a similar appearance- even though they have different characteristics and are made from difference materials. Oak dowel is softer and looks natural while in color, whereas the steel rod is solid and industrial looking. Therefore, the stool design aims to balance both the beauty and capture character from the various materials.
IDEA SKETCH
The next step is creating a structure for a stool. Few sketch provided me an idea to make the stool more stable than my initial chair. Welding the steel cross frame is the best solution. Moreover, to give it an aesthetic look, each dowel has a slot at the top which will be attached to a frame. A last component is a leg rest that can hold for dowel legs in place.

RENDERING
PROCESS
Dowel legs The construction begins with 30mm Tasmania Oak Dowels 2.4m in length which are cut into 4 pieces (600mm each) by drop saw before the handcrafting process. Applying slots into dowel uses dowelling zig and drill press with a half-inch drill bit to accommodate the steel rod size. The next stage is to use a router machine to round up two heads of the dowel legs. Following this sanding and varnishing is completed.

Seating part The seat is made from 19mm Laminated Tasmanian Oak. The four corners are rounded by hand. The most important step is to make a half-inch deep cross channel using a hand press router. The finishing process is with the dowel legs is the same as above.
Rod frame and leg rest The half-inch steel rod is bent by hand. The stool includes two major parts- the main frame and the leg rest. They need to match the requirements outlined in the technical drawing. Using a bell sander helps clean up all the sharp edges before the welding process begins. The powder coating colour can be tailored based on the customer order.
