DDW15

In 2015 Dutch Design Week (DDW) celebrated imagination through choosing the theme ‘What if...’. It is the question with which every designer and all innovation begins. The question shared by everyone who believes that everything could be better, more beautiful or efficient, and who recognises the challenge in every problem.

For us, 2015 was a year in which long-cherished wishes were fulfilled. The new website was launched and we added DDW Music, a comprehensive music programme, to the event. Improvements that we had seen on the road ahead long ago. Innovation that started with a What if... So what if I was to tell you that Dutch Design Week will celebrate its fifteenth anniversary in 2016? What if I said that the event is still growing in quality and magnitude, and that you can be part of it? Everything starts with dreaming and daring. I wish you good questions. Martijn Paulen Director Dutch Design Week

3

Foreword

This year we presented answers and solutions by 2500 designers, but their experiments and ideas too. A record number of 275,000 visitors came to be amazed. For 9 whole days in 100 locations they were given the opportunity to ask themselves new questions, and find inspiration for their own answers. This publication, a bird’s-eye view reflection, wants to do the same for the reader.

'One of the most dynamic festivals is Dutch Design Week, which will stage more than 400 events in Eindhoven from Oct. 17 to 25. Eindhoven has emerged as a global center of design experimentation as students have flocked to Design Academy Eindhoven, Europe’s most influential design school, and stayed in the city after graduation to set up studios in the derelict factories and warehouses offered to young designers for low rents by the local

council. Several hundred thousand people travel to Eindhoven each year to explore the city’s design scene during Dutch Design Week. Few other places have as strong a design ethos, or such staunch political support, yet other festivals have tried to develop distinctive strands of programming.'

Ambassadors of Dutch design

In 2015 Studio Makkink & Bey and Koert van Mensvoort were the ambassadors. The first underlined the growing importance of interdisciplinary working, learning and thinking. The second focused primarily on the increasing and widely supported desire for new innovative directions for social issues. 11

Ambassadors

Each year Dutch Design Week appoints two parties from the field of design as ambassadors for Dutch design in general and the week in particular. They fulfil representative tasks and deploy their network to lay links and help designers who are just starting out on their way.

Ambassadors

Makkink & Bey

DDW15

Architect Rianne Makkink (1964) and designer Jurgen Bey (1965) have been deeply involved in the international world of design on multiple levels. Since 2002, as Studio Makkink & Bey, they have connected various disciplines (product design with interior design, applied art with architecture, exhibition and landscape architecture), and they study social and economic systems. Both are active in education, act as curators and regularly collaborate with fledgling designers, among whom many Dutch Design Week participants.

12

DDW15

Koert van Mensvoort Ambassadors

Designer, philosopher and scientist dr. Koert van Mensvoort (1974) researches the possible role between technology and design for the society of the future. He is the founder and director of the Next Nature Network and holds lectures around the world. Since 2003 he has been affiliated with the faculty of Industrial Design at Eindhoven University of Technology. In 2014 the Next Nature Network won a Dutch Design Award in the category Design Research for The In Vitro Meat Cookbook.

Dutch Design Week concentrates on designs for the future. In the many curated exhibitions and open studio presentations during the event, every imaginable discipline and aspect of design was once again on offer in this edition. The emphasis was on experiment, innovation and

cross-overs. Special attention went to the work and development of young talent. There appeared to be more on offer than ever this year, and since opening the doors to foreign participants in 2013 it has become even more international.

‘Dutch Design Week and Dutch Design Awards as well as the Graduation Show at the Design Academy Eindhoven are the best barometers for seeing the latest thinking, concepts, and debates about the design field in Holland. Its growing importance should impact every student and designer practicing today not necessarily because of the design solutions that are presented, but because of the design process and thinking that is evident in many of the projects. The HOW is more important than the final outcome. Essential to spreading the word about all of the events during this week is the public relations for the events, which does an outstanding job of giving journalists an overview of the most important exhibitions and projects. As DDW grows larger, their role also becomes increasingly important for navigating through the events of the week.’ - Matilda McQuaid, Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum and International Jury Dutch Design Awards, October 2015 40

DDW projects: initiating, curating and organising DDW projects

Dutch Design Week offers designers a leading international platform, and strengthens the position of the Dutch design mentality and Dutch design. Although most of the presentations were initiated by designers, the organisation behind Dutch Design Week organised and curated parts

of the programme this year too. Exhibitions, research projects and network meetings, which often came about in cooperation with programme partners – like the development project Bottle-up, the exhibition Hands Off and It’s Your World in the Klokgebouw.

The annual Dutch Design Week (DDW) is a worldwide leading design event in the city of Eindhoven. DDW presents every facet of the everevolving nature of Dutch design. Events: publicity, network expansion and commissions Events

Dutch Design Week is an annual highlight for the creative industry. The work that the designers exhibit covers almost every area in society. Again, this year, this was fuel for debate and food for reflection: the programme boasted a great choice of lectures, seminars,

workshops and tours. Through exposing designers and their work to the media, industry and other sectors in the form of publicity, network expansion and commissions, Dutch Design Week helps them get ahead.

Dutch Design Week sponsors provide financial support, but also fulfil an intrinsic role. In this edition, ABN AMRO (main sponsor since 2011) organised business events and manifested itself as a Partner for the Future especially in the area of talent development. VOLVO, Eneco, Pastoe and de Volkskrant had various ‘design challenges’, inviting designers to

provide their vision on social issues and sketch scenarios for the future. Media partners like de Volkskrant and VPRO unfurled countless design competitions and activities during the week. And NTR Klokhuis showed the results of a biannual project in cooperation with the Design Academy Eindhoven and DDW.

‘Once again Dutch Design Week has proved that this is by far the most interesting and relevant design weeks around the globe. Although smaller than its counterparts around the world, and less commercial – The Dutch Design Week is unique in its emphasis on the relationship between design, society and community: Where else one can find designers who tackle topics such as immigration, refugees, prisoners, economy, happiness and the digital age - and at same time don’t forget to deal with “classic” design issues such as innovative thinking, aesthetics and execution.’

Dutch Design Week, the Effenaar and booking agency Friendly Fire increased the festival feeling with the introduction of DDW Music. The programme – totalling 50 live performances in various locations around the city – included folk, garage, indie and electronica and was strikingly varied and cutting edge.

Highlights were the shows by Rufus Wainwright in the Muziekgebouw, OIJ at Nul Zes and (new too this year) The Closing Party in pop temple the Effenaar – the official closing party for Dutch Design Week, with performances from DJs/producers Kutmah and Zes, to name but a few.

Dutch Design Week believes in the creativity and the problem-solving capacities of designers. To strengthen the atmosphere among all this innovation and inspiration, festivities took place all week. Often in the most unexpected places, into the small hours. More than anything, design is big

fun. Celebratory proof was the opening party by Biki90 and the Late Night Bingo in the Temporary Art Centre. But also the annual opening party at Dutch Invertuals and the Dutch Design Award for best desert in the Ketelhuis. Happily captured in photographs.

Every October Dutch Design Week shows that the world of tomorrow is being made today. Through drawing attention to the promising perspectives through the year, lectures and presentations took place in Amsterdam and Milan in 2015.

Media partner Bright presented the best of DDW during the fifth Bright Day. Once again this year there were three editions of the design talk show Future Series – with contributions from Jurgen Bey, Koert van Mensvoort and Ralph Nauta.
