Editor’s Note
Hello and welcome to the WINTER 2015 issue of The Carolinas Today. In the previous issue we took a look at Self Defense. Dr. Ruthless will be back, she has been in Nepal, helping to empower women. In one of many ‘Firsts’ here at The Carolinas Today, we will begin to publish supplements to the current issue. Currently in the works, a political piece on the South Carolina Tea Party Coalition’s 2015 Convention held in Myrtle Beach, SC. We hope you find it as interesting as we did. In this issue we have a rather large piece from Zilla’s Emporium. Zilla’s Emporium is an online pet supply store. You’ll find the story about Zilla’s Emporium on Page 49, followed by the Outward Hound product line which they offer. On Page 39 we have a great article provided by FEMA on Wnter Preparedness. This article covers things that you may already know and practice, but it never hurts to look at ways to be prepared. Speaking of being prepared, The Carolinas Today would like to welcome “Homestead Holsters” (Page 17). These holsters are made of the highest quality materials right here in the U.S.A. Members of our staff have used Homestead Holster products for years and speak very highly of them. Getting healthy and having a healthy lifestyle is what you will find Shawn Smirnoff doing when he’s not in class. Shawn’s Bio starts on Page 17, preceded by “Understanding the Benefits of Probiotics for your Cats” on Page 14. As you read through this and future issues, look for the video links. The videos will expand on the content in the article or offer a message from the advertiser. Be sure to share content from the magazine with your friends via the share button at the top of the reader. You can also visit our Facebook page or follow us on Twitter using the links below or on our web site, thecarolinastoday.com. I hope you enjoy the changes we've made thus far and find them as fulfilling as we do. Laus Deo, Patrick Fairbrother Editor

Understanding the Benefits of Probiotics For Your Cat Having a balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut is what helps keep you and your pets healthy. Probiotics are beneficial bacteria that help protect the GI tract from harmful bacteria and can nutritionally manage many of your pet’s digestive issues such as irritable bowel syndrome, intestinal parasites and infections, gastroenteritis, and stress-induced diarrhea. There is no shortage of probiotics on the market. But not all probiotics are created equal. Solid science and research is the foundation for any good pet supplement. But to be great, it takes a deeper understanding and love of pets. Purina Veterinary Diets – Fortiflora is the result of years of dedicated research from a group of passionate scientists who really believed in what they were doing. Probiotics aren’t drugs or antibiotics. They are living microorganisms. Because of this, they need to be alive to be effective. What good is a highly researched probiotic if the beneficial bacteria aren’t alive or your pet doesn’t want to eat it? Purina developed a special strain of probiotic - Enterococcus Faecium SF68 found in Fortiflora. Using the technology of multiple microencapsulation layers and unique packaging, this probiotic remains alive from shipping to storage all the way to the GI tract.

Because one of the most common problems veterinarians see is recommended probiotic supplement for pets. Cats Meow Veterinary Hospital learned the value of this probiotic and highly recommends our clients feed it to their cats. It is very palatable and is often used as an appetite stimulate for a sick cat or a fussy eater. You simply open the pouch and sprinkle it on your cat’s food. No pills! Cats Meow Veterinary has found Purina Veterinary Diets - Fortiflora to be especially helpful in young kittens that may get loose stools when transitioning from mother’s milk to food. It is also very beneficial for cats that get stress-induced diarrhea from situations such as boarding, being adopted, or a change in their situation at home - like a new addition to the family, whether it be human or animal. Any change in diet or an allergy to something in the food can also cause diarrhea. Regardless of the cause of the diarrhea, Fortiflora promotes your cats’ intestinal health. Purina Veterinary Diets - Fortiflora has also been shown to promote immune health because 70% of the body’s immune cells are actually in the GI tract. This is true for humans as well as cats and dogs. Fortiflora contains high levels of antioxidants vitamins A, C and E to promote a healthy immune system. Feline Herpes Virus I (FHV-1) is a highly contagious disease among cats that can cause many vision and respiratory problems. Because the probiotic in Fortiflora stimulates the immune system, it can help alleviate symptoms cats suffer from chronic FHV-1. The fact that you can feed your cat Fortiflora and it goes into the GI tract and treats a viral upper respiratory problem like Herpes is amazing! It can also help kittens before and during immunizations, as well as older cats with weakened immune systems or cats that are weakened during an illness or treatment. Purina Veterinary Diets – Fortiflora is only one of the many benefits Cats Meow Veterinary offers to keep your cat healthy and happy. Call today for an appointment for your new kitten or your senior feline friend and receive $5 off a Wellness Exam when you mention this article. THE CAROLINAS TODAY
WINTER 2015
Hi there! Shawn Smirnoff here. Yep, that's me pitchin’. I didn't start out there, let me tell you a little bit about myself…
“Dreams do come true...”
I was born in Brandon, Florida in early September. My family moved to the small town of Eclectic, Alabama when I was 2 and have been on my journey ever since. I went to Elmore County High school and played baseball and football. Upon graduating in 2012, I received an academic scholarship to Central Alabama Community College. I also earned a spot to walk on the baseball team. While attending CACC, we were the first team in Alabama to win the National Championship at the junior college level. That was the most exciting thing ever, especially coming from a high school that didn't win much. Our Championship Ring looks amazing and it’s something I had only dreamed about. Every kid who has every played sports dreams about ‘getting the ring’. After achieving that dream with my team, I knew that dreams do come true, it’s just a matter of time and how much effort and hard work you put into something. The second year of my college career I earned a baseball scholarship. The coaches were impressed with how much improvement I had made throughout my first year. I am a left handed pitcher and pitchers have a lot of control and responsibility on the field. I like being a leader on and off the field. I did great during the second year and earned a Full ride to The University of North Alabama which is a division 2 school (NCAA) in Florence, Alabama. I had plenty of offers from all over, but North Alabama seemed to offer me the best, so that’s where I went. I will have my school paid for throughout my college years. I am Majoring in Exercise Science and planning to be a Physical Therapist. I like to help others with their problems. About a month into the Fall season of my junior year, a friend I play baseball with me told me about a company called Makeway Wellness and the opportunities it offers. I decided to go to a meeting and find out more about this Company and how it will tie in with my major course of study, Exercise Science. The best part about the formation of MakeWay Wellness is that everything fell into place just as it was meant to. Not only was I impressed with the products but that I could also have the opportunity to help myself financially. I would like to share with you what Dr. Howard Peiper, Pulitzer Prize nominated and bestselling author of “The Secrets of Staying Young” had to say, “Finally, there is a complete wellness system that has all the beneficial and effective ingredients which I have been recommending to people for over 30 years. What is exciting about this system is that ALL of these ingredients are within Awaken-S7 and Re-Vive! These ingredients, carefully formulated in individual efficacious amounts, synergistically balance our pH, help to detox our bodies and strengthen our immune system. There are NO OTHER products currently on the market that even come close to these, and here they are in Awaken-S7 and Re-Vive! I am so grateful.” 18

Each of our holsters are handcrafted by me in the USA using only the highest grade materials available. They are 100% custom made and will fit your weapon like a glove. We use .080 thick Kydex material. This is thicker than what many holster manufacturers use but it provides increased protection and durability. Our 8-9 oz leather is vegetable tanned and will not harm your guns finish like the chrome tanned leather that some use. Our holsters also feature all steel belt clips that will not break. Our concealment holsters are easily adjusted by the user for gun retention. There is no need to apply heat or send them back for adjustment. Simply tighten or loosen the steel mounting screws for more or less retention. They are also adjustable for cant and ride height by simply moving the belt clips up or down. Most orders ship within one week. If there is going to be a delay we will let you know right away. We are continuously adding new applications so please email us if your gun is not listed.

The Cape Lookout Lighthouse Located on the Southern Outer Banks of North Carolina is 163 feet tall. It flashes every 15 seconds and is visible at least 12 miles out to sea and up to 19 miles. The Cape Lookout Light is one of the very few lighthouses that operate during the day and became fully automated in 1950.The Cape Lookout Lighthouse is the only such structure in the United States to bear the checkered day-mark, intended not only for differentiation between similar light towers, but also to show direction. The center of the black diamonds points in a north-south direction, while the center of the white diamonds points east-west.

Charleston
is famous for its unique culture, which blends traditional Southern U.S., English, French, and West African elements. The downtown peninsula is well known for its art, music, local cuisine, and fashion. Spoleto Festival USA, held annually in late spring, has become one of the world's major performing arts festivals. It was founded in 1977 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gian Carlo Menotti, who sought to establish a counterpart to the Festival dei Due Mondi (the Festival of Two Worlds) in Spoleto, Italy.

Charleston's oldest community theater group, the Footlight Players, has provided theatrical productions since 1931. A variety of performing arts venues includes the historic Dock Street Theatre. The annual Charleston Fashion Week held each Spring in Marion Square brings in designers, journalists, and clients from across the nation.

Charleston is known for its local seafood, which plays a key role in the city's renowned
cuisine, comprising staple dishes such as gumbo, she-crab soup, fried oysters, Lowcountry boil, deviled crab cakes, red rice, and shrimp and grits. Rice is the staple in many dishes, reflecting the rice culture of the Low Country. The cuisine in Charleston is also strongly influenced by British and French elements.
As it has on every aspect of Charleston culture, the Gullah
community has had a tremendous influence on music in Charleston, especially when it comes to the early development of jazz music. In turn, the music of Charleston has had an influence on that of the rest of the country. The geechee dances that accompanied the music of the dock workers in Charleston followed a rhythm that inspired Eubie Blake's "Charleston Rag" and later James P. Johnson's "The Charleston", as well as the dance craze that defined a nation in the 1920s. "Ballin' the Jack", which was a popular dance in the years before "The Charleston", was written by native Charlestonian Chris Smith. www.thecarolinastoday.com

The Port of Charleston, owned and operated by the South Carolina Ports
Authority, is one of the largest ports in the U.S. The Port of Charleston consists of five terminals, and a sixth terminal to open in 2018. Despite occasional labor disputes, the port is ranked number one in customer satisfaction across North America by supply chain executives. Port activity at the two terminals located in the city of Charleston is one of the city's leading sources of revenue, behind tourism. Today the Port of Charleston boasts the deepest water in the southeast region and regularly handles ships too big to transit through the Panama Canal. A next-generation harbor deepening project is currently underway to take the Port of Charleston's entrance channel to 54 feet and harbor channel to 52 feet at mean low tide.

WINTER 2015
Before Winter Storms and Extreme Cold
To prepare for a winter storm you should do the following:
Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit: Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Visit the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended products. Sand to improve traction. Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment. Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fireplace or wood-burning stove. Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm. Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together when disaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, how you will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency. A NOAA Weather Radio broadcasts alerts and warnings directly from the NWS for all hazards. You may also sign up in advance to receive notifications from your local emergency services. Download FEMA’s Be Smart. Know Your Alerts and Warnings for a summary of notifications at: www. ready.gov/prepare. Free smart phone apps, such as those available from FEMA and the American Red Cross, provide information about finding shelters, providing first aid, and seeking assistance for recovery. Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your vehicle. Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other animals or livestock to sheltered areas with nonfrozen drinking water. Winterize Your Vehicle Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car: Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing. www.thecarolinastoday.com
39
Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals should be clean. Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels. Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning. Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using additives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line from freezing. Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly. Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability. Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures and do not lubricate as well. Thermostat - ensure it works properly. Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper washer fluid level. Install good winter tires - Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weather radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdictions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chains or snow tires with studs. Update the emergency kits in your vehicles with: a shovel windshield scraper and small broom flashlight battery powered radio extra batteries water snack food matches extra hats, socks and mittens first aid kit with pocket knife necessary medications blanket(s) tow chain or rope road salt and sand booster cables emergency flares fluorescent distress flag Winterize your home to extend the life of your fuel supply by insulating walls and attics, caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows, and installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic. Winterize your house, barn, shed or any other structure that may provide shelter for your family, neighbors, livestock or equipment. Clear rain gutters; repair roof leaks and cut away tree branches that could fall on a house or other structure during a storm. Maintain heating equipment and chimneys by having them cleaned and inspected 40
THE CAROLINAS TODAY
WINTER 2015
every year. Insulate pipes with insulation or newspapers and plastic and allow faucets to drip a little during cold weather to avoid freezing. Running water, even at a trickle, helps prevent pipes from freezing. All fuel-burning equipment should be vented to the outside and kept clear. Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your house knows how to use them. House fires pose an additional risk, as more people turn to alternate heating sources without taking the necessary safety precautions. Learn how to shut off water valves (in case a pipe bursts). Isulate your home by installing storm windows or covering windows with plastic from the inside to keep cold air out. Hire a contractor to check the structural ability of the roof to sustain unusually heavy weight from the accumulation of snow - or water, if drains on flat roofs do not work. Know the Terms Know the terms used to describe changing winter weather conditions and what actions to take. These terms can be used to determine the timeline and severity of an approaching storm. (Advisory / Watch / Warning). The NWS also issues advisories and warnings for other winter weather, including blizzards, freezes, wind chill, lake effect snow, and dense fog. Be alert to weather reports and tune in for specific guidance when these conditions develop. Freezing Rain - Rain that freezes when it hits the ground, creating a coating of ice on roads, walkways, trees and power lines. Sleet - Rain that turns to ice pellets before reaching the ground. Sleet also causes moisture on roads to freeze and become slippery. Wind Chill- Windchill is the temperature it “feels like when you are outside. The NWS provides a Windchill Chart to show the difference between air temperature and the perceived temperature and the amount of time until frostbite occurs. For more information, visit: www. nws.noaa.gov/om/windchill. Winter Weather Advisory - Winter weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences and may be hazardous. When caution is used, these situations should not be life threatening. The NWS issues a winter weather advisory when conditions are expected to cause significant inconveniences that may be hazardous. If caution is used, these situations should not be life-threatening. www.thecarolinastoday.com
41
Winter Storm Watch - A winter storm is possible in your area. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio, or television for more information. The NWS issues a winter storm watch when severe winter conditions, such as heavy snow and/or ice, may affect your area but the location and timing are still uncertain. A winter storm watch is issued 12 to 36 hours in advance of a potential severe storm. Tune in to NOAA Weather Radio, local radio, TV, or other news sources for more information. Monitor alerts, check your emergency supplies, and gather any items you may need if you lose power. Winter Storm Warning - A winter storm is occurring or will soon occur in your area. Blizzard Warning - Sustained winds or frequent gusts to 35 miles per hour or greater and considerable amounts of falling or blowing snow (reducing visibility to less than a quarter mile) are expected to prevail for a period of three hours or longer. Frost/Freeze Warning - Below freezing temperatures are expected.

THE CAROLINAS TODAY
WINTER 2015
During Winter Storms and Extreme Cold Stay indoors during the storm. Walk carefully on snowy, icy, walkways. Avoid overexertion when shoveling snow. Overexertion can bring on a heart attack―a major cause of death in the winter. Use caution, take breaks, push the snow instead of lifting it when possible, and lift lighter loads. Keep dry. Change wet clothing frequently to prevent a loss of body heat. Wet clothing loses all of its insulating value and transmits heat rapidly. Signs of Frostbite: Occurs when the skin and body tissue just beneath it freezes. Loss of feeling and white or pale appearance in extremities, such as fingers, toes, earlobes, face, and the tip of the nose. What to Do: Cover exposed skin, but do not rub the affected area in an attempt to warm it up. Seek medical help immediately. Signs of Hypothermia: Dangerously low body temperature. Uncontrollable shivering, memory loss, disorientation, incoherence, slurred speech, drowsiness, and apparent exhaustion. What to Do: If symptoms of hypothermia are detected take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95°, seek medical attention immediately. Get the victim to a warm location. Remove wet clothing. Warm the center of the body first by wrapping the person in blankets or putting on dry clothing. Give warm, non-alcoholic beverages if the victim is conscious. Seek medical help immediately. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends, if you detect symptoms of frostbite, seek medical care. Because frostbite and hypothermia both result from exposure, first determine whether the victim also shows signs of hypothermia. Hypothermia is a more serious medical condition and requires emergency medical assistance. Drive only if it is absolutely necessary. If you must drive: travel in the day; don’t travel alone; keep others informed of your schedule; stay on main roads and avoid back road shortcuts. Let someone know your destination, your route, and when you expect to arrive. If your car gets stuck along the way, help can be sent along your predetermined route. www.thecarolinastoday.com

If the pipes freeze, remove any insulation or layers of newspapers and wrap pipes in rags. Completely open all faucets and pour hot water over the pipes, starting where they were most exposed to the cold (or where the cold was most likely to penetrate). Maintain ventilation when using kerosene heaters to avoid buildup of toxic fumes. Refuel kerosene heaters outside and keep them at least three feet from flammable objects. Conserve fuel, if necessary, by keeping your residence cooler than normal. Temporarily close off heat to some rooms. If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower t han 55ยบF.

After Winter Storms and Extreme Cold If your home loses power or heat for more than a few hours or if you do not have adequate supplies to stay warm in your home overnight, you may want to go to a designated public shelter if you can get there safely. Text SHELTER + your ZIP code to 43362 (4FEMA) to find the nearest shelter in your area (e.g., SHELTER20472) Bring any personal items that you would need to spend the night (such as toiletries, medicines). Take precautions when traveling to the shelter. Dress warmly in layers, wear boots, mittens, and a hat. Continue to protect yourself from frostbite and hypothermia by wearing warm, loose-fitting, lightweight clothing in several layers. Stay indoors, if possible. Learn From Every Storm Restock your emergency supplies to be ready in case another storm hits Assess how well your supplies and family plan worked. What could you have done better? Take a few minutes to improve your family plan and supplies before the next winter storm hits. THE CAROLINAS TODAY
WINTER 2015
Hi, My name is Zilla. I was a shelter cat until my new Mom took me out and that's when I found my furever home. I am now healthy and happy and love my new life. My family decided to name our online pet supply store "Zilla's Emporium" after me and 10% of all purchases go to local shelters to sponsor a pet so they can be helped like I was. We have all kinds toys, charms, candles, collars, beds, cots and so much more and new product goes on everyday. Don't forget 10% of all purchases (big or small) go to sponsor a shelter pet like me. It helps my friends have a second chance. www.zillasemporium.com
