Meet Kim Hurley “The Cat Lady of Myrtle Beach”

14

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

No one knows and loves felines like Kim Hurley. Her life is dedicated to the beloved cat. Her Mother jokingly says “she must have been a cat in a former life. She’s always had a magic touch with cats. Her voice seems to calm them and draw them to her. Even when she was a little girl at Grandma’s house out in the country, she would catch wild kittens in an old burlap potato sack, taming them for pets.” Kim owns and operates The Cat’s Meow Veterinary of Myrtle Beach. She is now in the process of preparing for her biggest move yet, to a new location in Myrtle Beach which she plans to open by September/October. Her new location is a state-of-the-art 5,000 square foot facility. Boasting a Hospital, Boarding facilities and Grooming Spa for “Cats Only”.

August 17th was National Black Cat day. So in honor of the day, Cat’s Meow took in this little kitten that was hit by a car. He has a broken leg and a diaphragmatic hernia. He will need a home one day.

Nancy, a client who brought in her Kitty, must have said something hilarious or the Kitty told Kim a secret! Nancy says, ”My money is on the kitty, she talks with them all the time. You are awesome Kim!” Kim replied. “How cool is it to love your job?! Kitties rule!”

Cat I named “Hoppin John” that stayed in our house the whole vacation. I doctored his hurt foot. “It never fails...”, Kim continues, “every trip, I find a cat, I guess I should say the cat finds me, and needs my help.” www.thecarolinastoday.com

Working on plans for new location in Myrtle Beach.

Here are a few Reviews from clients that tell the story: The Cat’s Meow is the best! Kim and her staff give such time and caring to all their patients and owners. My Audrey was spoiled rotten on her stay. She loves all the people who work there. I would recommend the Cat’s Meow to everyone for all your cat needs. Besides, Audrey, I have a cat with severe allergies. The poor baby would scratch until she bled and was a miserable kitty. The vet I was using couldn’t get them under control and I was considering having her put down to relieve her suffering when someone said I should try Cat’s Meow. Well today thanks to Kim and Dr. Brandy she’s a whole new cat. She plays and purrs and is a very happy girl. Dr. Brandy and Kim kept trying until they had her allergies under control. Because they

care!! Thanks to Kim and her amazing staff. -Nancy Lee This is the best place ever to take your kitties! Kim and the staff are wonderful! We live part time in Charlotte and I drive my cats all the way to Myrtle when it’s time to get groomed just because I’m that happy and satisfied with The Cats Meow! Thanks everyone for taking care of Ariel and Francesca! I wouldn’t trust anyone else! -Stephanie Nuckles-Farbo Took my George to be neutered this past monday, such nice people, answered all my questions and even explained everything to my kids so the could understand. Definitely going back with my other kitties. -Jennifer LaPrade

A Story of Hope and Love

In late May, a small Siamese mix kitten was brought into Cat’s Meow Veterinary Hospital. A very kind-hearted couple had stopped traffic the night before when they thought they saw something dragging itself across the road. It wasn’t until their headlights shined in its eyes, that they realized it was a small kitten! The kitten couldn’t move its back legs, but had the determination of a champion to save itself. Realizing that the kitten had probably either been hit by or thrown out of a car, the couple made plans to nurse it through the late hours of the night and get it to the hospital first thing the next morning. Upon arrival at Cat’s Meow, we estimated it to be a female kitten around 6 weeks old, appearing disheveled, dehydrated and malnourished. Her injury was determined by X-rays showing a fractured pelvis on the left side. Her tail seemed to be injured as well, as it was just hanging down with little or no movement. This can be scary because there are a lot of nerves in the tail, some of which lead to the bladder and bowels. We were not sure if she could go potty on her own. (Obviously, I am putting the medical information in terms everyone can understand) She cried this pitiful meow every time she tried to move. The way she looked right into my eyes as if she were speaking to me touched my heart. I knew this was no ordinary kitten, at least not to me, and I immediately

18

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

began to bond with her. I named her “Paddy Cake” because of the way she used her 2 front paws like they were clapping together to grab things as she tried to move. Now that I was in love with this kitten, I needed to find out what plans the people that found her had. We had a couple of options as far as healing her injuries. She would need to stay in the hospital for a while. We were crossing our fingers that she would be able to potty on her own, which she finally did after we got some nutrition and fluids in her. Yippee! One hurdle crossed. The couple had a choice as far as the broken pelvis. Since she was a very young kitten, strict rest in small cage preventing too much movement, would allow a growing kitten to heal the pelvis fracture. It may not be perfect, but the alternative would be expensive surgery requiring pins. You can’t put a cast on a pelvis. (hahaha) The couple opted for cage rest leaving her at Cats Meow. Many conversations later, it was decided that I would adopt “Paddy Cake”. She was now a “special needs kitten”. The couple already had several cats and dogs, and both had busy work schedules. I would be able to give her more of the type of care she needed at this time. I eventually took her home, unable to leave her alone at night. She spent most of her time in my lap and in bed with me. Then we would go back to work in the morning, where she would spend her day resting in her cage. My in-laws came for a visit during this time. To show you how special this little angel is, my 80 year old father-in-law that has never held a cat in his life, was touched by “Paddy Cake”. I’m talking a hard core Italian man that never had pets was loving on her! Not to mention, my very Italian husband was against adding another cat to our family. But even he was easily won over by “Paddy Cake’s” unique personality. He rationalized it by saying now we had an even number of boys verses girls. (hahaha) By mid-June, her tail had to be amputated. It was dead all the way up to a small, but very important part, close to the base of the tail. The nerves had not been damaged that allow her to go potty. So “Paddy Cake” became a cute little kitten with what I call a “nubbin” for a tail. Months later, she now rules my house of cats. Not only did she bring joy into my life, she has resurrected some of my older lazy cats. It’s play time all the time! We have a pet door leading to a huge screened in porch. “Paddy Cake” learned to go in and out very quickly. She is so smart! She knows her name and comes when I call her. “Paddy Cake’s” expressive eyes talk to me. I know people jokingly call me the Cat Lady, but I swear it’s like I understand what she says just by the gaze of her blue expressive eyes. “Paddy Cake” has so many of the same personality traits that my dearly loved “Foxy” (a Somali) had. I lost her at the age of 13, years ago and miss her so much. “Paddy Cake” drags one of “Foxy’s” favorite toys around the house and up on the bed to wherever I am, wanting me to play with her... just like “Foxy” used to do! I can’t believe I even still www.thecarolinastoday.com

19

have the toy after all these years. Like “Foxy”, I have to make sure I play with “Paddy Cake” in the evenings until she is tired before bed. Otherwise, she will wake me up too early in the morning as she sleeps right under my arm.

I guess the reason for this story is to show Hope. Hope that there will always be kind-hearted animal lovers like the couple that rescued “Paddy Cake”. Hope that every person can one day look into a cat’s eyes and feel that warm glow in your heart that is love. All of God’s creatures, including us humans, were put here on earth to experience love. Hope that one day, all of you can be touched to your soul by one of God’s most fascinating, loving creatures... the cat.

“I was honored to be asked to write a song about one of my favorite festivals. I envisioned the sights, sounds and feelings this unique setting brings to bluegrass music,” said Rhonda Vincent. “The song takes the listener on a musical journey through the festival. I hope it makes everyone want to attend to experience the song first hand and I look forward to performing it live at the event in September,” Vincent continued. Bluegrass Island can be heard by visiting, https://soundcloud.com/bluegrassisland/bluegrass-island-by-rhondavincent. After years of hard work, siblings Lee and Elaine Roy have firmly established themselves as one of

the pre-eminent acts in Bluegrass today. As THE ROYS they bring immaculate harmonies, impeccable musicianship and strong songwriting to their music, combining a traditional vocal styling with a progressive instrumental attitude to enchant fans around the world. Proud to continue the “family harmony” sound started by such groups as Hall of Fame inductees The Carter Family, The Louvin Brothers and The Osborne Brothers, THE ROYS revel in exploring new facets of the genre while remaining true to their roots. Born in Fitchburg, Massachusetts and raised across the border in Coal Branch, New Brunswick, Canada, THE ROYS’ early childhood days were filled with music. “Our Grandma LeBlanc played Acadian tunes on her fiddle while my aunts and uncles joined in,” Elaine recalls. “It was truly ‘Roots’ music. We fell in love with that ‘honest’ sound, and our harmonies seemed to fit that style of music,” adds Lee. Growing up in a family where guitar pulls were a normal occurrence, Lee became adept on drums, bass and mandolin and joined his first Bluegrass band at the age of nine. Elaine learned guitar and began singing at age five, making her first on-stage appearance at the tender age of 10. Though the siblings were keenly aware of each other’s talent, they had no idea that they shared a common hope for the future. “I had always dreamed about going to Nashville,” states Elaine. “I was amazed when I learned my brother shared that vision as well.” For Lee, “It was something that we both wanted – and it just seemed natural to pursue it.”

Since making the decision to move to Nashville seven years ago, it’s been one success story after another for the duo. Growing up on traditional Country and Bluegrass music had given them a strong stylistic base, and their sound developed into a blend of Bluegrass, Country, Folk, Roots and Gospel music that resonates with the listener. Songs like the rollicking “Workin’ Girl Blues” and the timeless “Beautiful” earned them a strong following among fans while helping them forge strong bonds with programmers, talent buyers and critics across the country. Phone lines began to light up with requests for their music, and the crowds at their live appearances began to grow. The accolades started rolling in with their wins for Inspirational Country Music (ICM) Duo of the Year in 2009 and 2010. The release of their first Rural Rhythm Records’ (RRR) album, LONESOME WHISTLE, kicked their career into high gear. The disc debuted at No. 7 on BILLBOARD's Bluegrass Albums Chart and earned them a spot on BILLBOARD'S Top 50 Bluegrass Albums of 2011 chart. The CD’s success helped land them the award for the ICM Bluegrass Artist of the Year in 2011, as well as a No. 1 single, “Coal Minin’ Man.” THE ROYS’ sophomore project for the label, NEW DAY DAWNING, followed in 2012. The landmark EP debuted at #2 on the BILLBOARD Bluegrass Albums Chart, reached #1 on Amazon's Bluegrass Best-Sellers list, and landed on BLUEGRASS UNLIMITED MAGAZINE's Top 15 Albums chart. Additionally, the disc’s first single, “Still Standing,” and other tracks from the EP continually dominated the weekly and monthly Top 20 BLUEGRASS TODAY charts. Additionally, in 2012, Lee and Elaine were named ICM Bluegrass Artist of the Year and their song, “I Wonder What God’s Thinking,” was named the ICM Inspirational Country Single of the Year. Keeping the award-winning sibling duo on the fast track, THE ROYS released GYPSY RUNAWAY TRAIN in 2013, their third CD for RRR containing six ROYS’ originals and some of their all-time favorite Bluegrass and Country classics. The album earned a Top 5 on Billboard’s Bluegrass Album Chart and hit #1 on Sirius XM Bluegrass Junction’s Most-Played Albums chart (Oct. 2013), with the “hot and active” track: “Those Memories Of You” landing at #5 on Sirius XM Radio Bluegrass Junction’s Most-Played Tracks. 2013 also found THE ROYS performing at the official unveiling of the Johnny Cash US Postage Stamp, the well-regarded Country Thunder Wisconsin festival and at the historic and highly-publicized “Playin’ Possum: George Jones’ Final No Show” Tribute Concert. They were also invited to make their debut appearance on the Grand Ole’ Opry, realizing one of the duo’s major “life/career goals” and achieving what only a handful of Bluegrass acts have accomplished. 2014 found THE ROYS aboard the Inaugural Country Music Cruise, winning the hearts of traditional Country Music fans and earning a coveted performance spot aboard the 2015 cruise. They were also named the #1 Bluegrass Artist of the 2014 International Acoustic Music Awards (IAMA) and were a featured act at the Folk Alliance International. “No More Lonely” serves as the first single from the duo’s highly anticipated fourth album, THE VIEW, which will be released in September. The 11-song collection takes THE ROYS’ creativity to a whole new level. It features collaborations with some of the top songwriters in the business, including Steve Dean, Larry Alderman, Jenee Fleenor, Keesy Timmer, “Whisperin’ Bill“ Anderson and more. Throughout the years, THE ROYS have played some of the top stages in America and beyond, bringing their unique sound to Dollywood, Country Thunder, Tamworth (Australia), Folk Alliance, CMA Music Festival and countless Bluegrass festivals. Last year, the siblings made their European debut with shows in Germany, the U.K. and Denmark. The sought-after duo has performed the National Anthem for fans of NASCAR, NFL and Major League Baseball. They have hosted radio shows as well, including the legendary Ernest Tubb Midnite Jamboree and 650 AM WSM’s popular Guest Artist Series. THE ROYS’ debut appearance at The Ryman Auditorium’s SPRINGER MOUNTAIN FARMS www.thecarolinastoday.com

27

Nights At The Ryman series was a rousing success, and they were prominently featured in the PBS television special Pa’s Fiddle: Charles Ingalls, American Fiddler. The duo has hosted seven episodes of the Bluegrass Mountains television show and appeared on such popular television series as Fox & Friends, Better TV, Praise the Lord with Jason Crabb, RFD-TV's Country’s Family Reunion: Kinfolk, Hallmark Channel’s Marie show and most recently, Country’s Family Reunion: Simply Bluegrass. Lee (along with Matthew Rogers) wrote the theme song for the popular RFD-TV program, Campfire Café. THE ROYS were featured artists in the high-profile 2012 Vietti vinyl campaign. Lee and Elaine aligned with Team RealTree™ Outdoor Energy Drink for sponsorship of their 2012-2013 tour. The duo has shared the stage with superstars George Jones, Ricky Skaggs, Alan Jackson, Lady Antebellum, Doyle Lawson, Jason Aldean, Blake Shelton, Rhonda Vincent, Chris Young, Sara Evans, J.D. Crowe, The Oak Ridge Boys, Janie Fricke, Dailey & Vincent, Neal McCoy and Collin Raye. THE ROYS are active in charities here and abroad and return as co-hosts of the annual Christmas 4 Kids® Celebrity Golf Tournament again this year (an honor they shared in 2012 with Tennessee Titans’ placekicker Rob Bironas). In August 2010 the twosome traveled to Bogota, Colombia, South America with Compassion International on a trip that warmed their hearts and touched their lives forever. Since their return, they have sponsored several children through the program. They served as spokespersons for the organization during 2011 and 2012. Keep up to date with The Roys at www.theroysonline.com.

The World is Changing... Are YOU Ready? a brief look at self defense Self-defense is a countermeasure that involves defending oneself, one's property, or the well-being of another from harm. The use of the right of self-defense as a legal justification for the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions, but the interpretation varies widely. Physical Ju-Jitsu defense against a knife attack. Berlin 1924 pictured right. Physical self-defense is the use of physical force to counter an immediate threat of violence. Such force can be either armed or unarmed. In either case, the chances of success depend on a large number of parameters, related to the severity of the threat on one hand, but also on the mental and physical preparedness of the defender. Unarmed Many styles of martial arts are practiced for self-defense or include self-defense techniques. Some styles train primarily for self-defense, while other martial or combat sports can be effectively applied for self-defense. Some martial arts train how to escape from a gun situation, or how to break away from a punch, while others train how to attack. To provide more practical self-defense, many modern day martial arts schools now use a combination of martial arts styles and techniques, and will often customize self-defense training to suit the participants' lifestyles, occupations, age groups and gender, and physical and mental capabilities. Armed Further information: Non-lethal weapon and Melee weapon A wide variety of weapons can be used for self-defence. The most suitable depends on the threat presented, the victim or victims, and the experience of the defender. Legal restrictions also greatly influence self-defense options. In many cases there are also legal restrictions. While in some jurisdictions firearms may be carried openly or concealed expressly for this purpose, there are more commonly tight restrictions on who can own firearms, and what types they can own. Knives, especially those categorized as switchblades may also be controlled, as may batons, pepper spray and personal stun guns and Tasers - although some may be legal to carry with a licence or for certain professions. Non-injurious water-based self-defense indelible dyemarker sprays, or ID-marker or DNA-marker sprays linking a suspect to a crime scene, would in most places be legal to own and carry.

Everyday objects, such as flashlights, baseball bats, newspapers, keyrings with keys, kitchen utensils and other tools, and hair spray aerosol cans in combination with a lighter, can also be used as improvised weapons for self-defense. Tie-wraps double as an effective restraint. Weapons such as the Kubotan (pocket stick) have been built for ease of carry and to resemble everyday objects. Tactical flashlights and tactical pens are especially built as impact weapons that resemble everyday objects. Ballpoint pen knives, swordsticks, cane guns and modified umbrellas are similar categories of concealed self-defense weapons that serve a dual purpose.

Other Forms Avoidance Being aware of and avoiding potentially dangerous situations is one useful technique of self-defense. Attackers are typically larger, stronger, and are often armed or have an accomplice. These factors make fighting to defeat the attacker unlikely to succeed. When avoidance is impossible, one often has a better chance at fighting to escape, such methods have been referred to as 'break away' techniques. Understanding the 'mindset' of a potential attacker is essential if we are to avoid or escape a potentially life-threatening situation. De-escalation Verbal Self Defense, also known as Verbal Judo or Verbal Aikido, is defined as using one’s words to prevent, de-escalate, or end an attempted assault. It is a way of using words as weapons or as a shield. This kind of ‘conflict management’ is the use of voice, tone, and body language to calm a potentially violent situation before violence actually ensues. This often involves techniques such as taking a time-out, and deflecting the conversation to individuals in the group who are less passionately involved, or simply entering into protected empathic position to understand the attacker better. More to come in future issues of “The Carolinas Today”. Author Katy Mattingly defines verbal self-defense as simply saying no to someone or repeatedly refusing a request or telling someone who has violated a boundary what you want, or it could entail a more complicated scenario in which you are called on to refuse to engage verbally with someone manipulative, to set limits, and end the conversation. Suzette Haden Elgin the author of The Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense states that verbal self-defense defends against the eight most common types of verbal violence, and redirects and defuses potential verbal confrontations. Luke A. Archer, author and trainer of Verbal Aikido: the art of directing verbal attacks to a balanced outcome, proposes that most verbal attacks can be reoriented towards a balanced or positive direction, by using three steps based on the Aikido philosophy. Personal alarms Personal alarms are a way to practice passive self-defense. A personal alarm is a small, hand-held device that emits strong, loud, high-pitched sounds to deter attackers because the noise will sometimes draw the attention of passersby. Child alarms can function as locators or device alarms such as for triggering an alert when a swimming pool is in use to help prevent dangerous situations in addition to being a deterrent against would-be aggressors. www.thecarolinastoday.com

Self-defense education Self-defense techniques and recommended behavior under the threat of violence is systematically taught in self-defense classes. Commercial self-defense education is part of the martial arts industry in the wider sense, and many martial arts instructors also give self-defense classes. While all martial arts training can be argued to have some self-defense applications, self-defense courses are marketed explicitly as being oriented towards effectiveness and optimized towards situations as they occur in the real world. It should not be presumed however that sport based systems are inadequate, as the training methods employed regularly produce well conditioned fighters experienced in full contact fighting. There are a large number of systems taught commercially, many tailored to the needs of specific target audiences (e.g. defense against attempted rape for women, self-defense for children and teens). Notable systems taught commercially include: • civilian versions of modern military combatives, such as Krav-Maga, Defendo, Kajukenbo and Systema. • self-defense oriented forms of jujitsu, such as Aikijujutsu, Aikido, Bartitsu, German ju-jutsu, Allkampf-jitsu and Judo. • rape prevention, including Rape Aggression Defense System (RAD), AWARE, IMPACT/Model Mugging, etc. • Reality-Based Self-Defense (RBSD), Defensive Tactics. See reality based applications by organizations that are World Combat Association approved such as MDTA http://mdta.com.au • Sport based systems, such as kickboxing, Muay Thai, Boxing, Savate, Shoot Boxing, Sanshou, Judo, BJJ, Sambo, MMA and Wrestling can be adapted as self-defense. • Traditional unarmed fighting styles like Karate, Taekwondo, Hapkido, Pencak Silat . These styles can also include competing.

Dr. Ruthless®: Practical, Primal Self Defense For Women THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

Dr.Ruthless: About Dr. Ruthless速

Melissa Soalt AKA Dr. Ruthless

Melissa Soalt AKA Dr. Ruthless is an award- winning women's self defense expert, former private-practice psychotherapist and a Black Belt Hall of Fame recipient.

Named one of TOP FIVE "Tough Girls" by Black Belt in 2012.

A Black Belt Hall of Fame Recipient and Woman of the Year - awarded for her significant contributions to women's self defense -- in 2008 Melissa also received the Industry Award for Best Women's Self Defense. A frontrunner in full-force (padded-attacker) scenario-based methods, since 1986 Melissa has shown thousands of women how to protect themselves from danger and summon their primal powers to fight back and survive. She is widely respected for her no-nonsense methods, emotional depth, and unabashed call for all women to become physically literate in self-protection. Her Fierce and Female DVD has been hailed by law enforcement, street fighters and women's groups alike. Melissa also has first-hand experience with attack. While living in Israel, then traveling across Asia on her maiden voyage into the world (mid-1970's), Melissa successfully fought off physical and sexual / rape attacks. She also endured violent groping and indignities-- and was rudely awakened to the mistreatment of women worldwide. Amidst Asia's towering and humbling antiquities, she learned she was a fighter--and birthed her reverence and respect for female disobedience. A decade later in Boulder, Colorado, after years of martial arts training, a terrifying home-alone encounter with a knife-wielding rapist led her to more down-and-dirty methods that "would become me." (She foiled that attempt.) The founder and former owner of Model Mugging of Boston, in 1986, Melissa brought Model Mugging's scenario-based, training method to the East Coast. Under her dynamic leadership, aided by her background in psychotherapy and trauma recovery, it quickly emerged as one of the most successful full-force self defense schools nationwide-with specialized training for women, teens and men. Melissa's on-site seminars have been conducted at such notable institutions as Harvard, Polaroid, Hewlett Packard, Reebok, UPS, Procter and Gamble and the Miami Herald. Based in the US, she has also taught in Germany, Switzerland, India and Nepal where she has also worked with at-risk women and girls. She is honored to have provided dedicated training and support to India's renowned group, Red Brigade Lucknow. Melissa also serves on their advisory board. MELISSA'S MEDIA CREDITS HAVE INCLUDED: THE VIEW, NBC Nightly News, INVESTIGATION DISCOVERY, NPR, Asia News International, Bangalore Headline News, Seattle's Northwest Afternoon, Deb Colitti's Life On Purpose, FM RADIO KANTIPUR out of Kathmandu Nepal, where was interviewed in-depth. and numerous other shows and newcasts. Melissa was also the self defense expert for Investigation Discovery's premier episode on "DATES FROM HELL." TO VIEW A RECENT PRESS RELEASE WITH SAMPLE TALKING POINTS CLICK HERE! Melissa has been cited or featured in national and international publications, including SELF, MARIE CLAIRE (South Africa) Woman's Day, The Wall Street Journal, HOLLYWOOD.COM, CosmoGirl, BLACK BELT, BUST, Germany's Stern Magazine, The HINDU, Newsweek Japan and The Prague Post. Her "DHARMA of DEFENSE" was featured on Feminist Pionner GLORIA FELDT'S site with rave reviews. www.thecarolinastoday.com

On a topic dear to her heart-- female journalists and the need for sexual assault preparedness training-- Melissa has shared her expertise with The Committee to Protect Journalists, has been cited in The American Journalism Review and The Ryerson Review of Journalism and was interviewed for a Q & A on POLITICS DAILY. Melissa has also published feature articles, and penned a personal safety newspaper column; she blogged for The Huffington Post and guest blogged for FORBES (Being Nice Can Kill You) and was a columnist for Self Defense For Women Magazine. Her essay, Fierce Love: The Heart of a Female Warrior, was featured in a Warrior's anthology. Melissa is back at work on her first book—a paradigm-shifting work infused with artful narrative, PRACTICAL takeaway skills, and calling for women to embrace this deepseated potential. You can find the good Doc posting like mad on her Face Book Page, where she freely dispenses lifesaving wisdom, and on her down and dirty BLOG "Find Your Fierce."

Gather The Women: A Personal & Urgent Note These are perilous times for women and girls all over the world. Violence and sexual attack against women is pandemic. That this rages unchecked in the 21st century is an outrage and tragedy-- so I'm bringing my Fierce Female messages and methods to regions of the world where the skills and spirit of self defense, along with all efforts to stem this violence, are urgently needed. To effect lasting changes in safety and status, women and girls MUST enable this power, re-seed this consciousness and harvest its competencies.

Women must no longer outsource their protection to men. Half the world's population should not live in fear of the other half. Not only is the learning of self defense vital to increasing women’s safety and to reducing the ills and indignities imposed by FEAR, but embodying the female warrior spirit is vital to restoring balance to the world--and ultimately to creating far more equitable societies.

Michael Haynack is Dr. Ruthless' fabulous co-trainer for hands-on and full-force seminars. A lifelong student of martial and combative arts, he holds black belts in Aikido and Karate and is an avid practitioner of Philippine blade, stick and empty-hand systems. He is also a certified Police Combat Shooting instructor and a certified instructor in Paul Vunak's "Progressive Fighting Systems." A personal protection specialist (e.g., bodyguard), former bouncer and police trainer, Michael has intervened in innumerable "battles," and has defended himself and others against single, multiple and armed attackers—individuals much larger than himself. At a whopping five feet, five inches tall, Michael brings a wealth of real world experience to his teaching. Michael has been donning the 'Bulletman" armor since 1991 and is co-founder and former chief instructor of the Rocky Mountain Combat Applications Training. He has trained Special Forces in the applications of adrenaline-state training methods and has appeared in sundry self defense and knife fighting videos. An accomplished scout, tracker and aficionado of wilderness survival, he is wellversed in the scholarly study and practice of warrior arts, and is a passionate champion of women's self defense.

What Other are saying about Dr. Ruthless “Every once in a while, someone comes along and not only leaves an indelible impression on you, but changes the way you perceive yourself and your place in the world. Melissa Soalt is one such person... Dr. Ruthless has a lot to offer the world." -- Black Belt Magazine's Woman of the Year "Dr. Ruthless KICKS ASS!" -- BUST Magazine “Melissa Soalt is probably the most powerful female self defence instructor in the world today.” -- Geoff Thompson, legendary UK Self Defense Pioneer, Screenwriter & Author “We just love this woman to death! ...” -- Crook & Chase TV hosts “Melissa, you are woman of power! It was just 3 hours of self defence training you gave to us, but the impact is for a lifetime.... the best self defence trainer anyone could ask for. I walked out the door a different person and stronger woman than I came in. You will see the difference!” -- Seema Ks, Head Coordinator, TSLD, New Delhi, India

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

Dr.Ruthless: Prevention Focus! Act Fast! Let me state the obvious: You're the only one who is with you all the time so you're in the best position to safeguard yourself. To reduce your risks, become a tough target, and escape violence keep your senses sharp and your responses quick. Trust your GUT and pay close attention to personal relationships and signs of controlling or aggressive behavior. To SELF defend... validate yourself.

Prevention: First Lines of Defense Be like a creature of the forest. Keenly observant. Senses amplified. Attuned to your environs. Here's why: two seconds of early detection could be enough time to avoid a "hit" and live to tell the story. Not bad! To reduce the element of surprise, ditch tunnel vision and develop peripheral vision. Soften your gaze and use your eyes like a wide angle lens. This can help eliminate blind spots--common angles of attack--and allows you to become an early motion detector. Walk like you own the turf. Put your weight down. Let your upper body and torso ride naturally atop the powerful carriage of your hips and legs. (No tipping forward or schlepping!) Stay aligned, on balance. Give peace a chance! If faced with a fuming, but not yet violent individual, use verbal skills to de-escalate, defuse, lower his aggressive arousal. (Use non-inflammatory, empathy-based language." I can see how upset you are.... I hear you.") Give an "honorable exit" but don't get soft. Talk and empathy are NOT always saving graces. Maintain distance while calmly moving yourself off his line of attack. Act fast! The first few seconds of an assault or first sign of imminent danger is your best time to break away. The longer a person has control over you, the more difficult it becomes to facilitate escape. Do not allow a criminal to move you to a second location (not even from the street to the backside of a building). Second locations are always more dangerous. At a second more isolated location, criminals will have more control over you. Go ballistic but do not "go with!" RULE! Don't allow yourself to be tied up. If you see rope, duct tape or cordage coming at you, it's time to "go off!" Fight like a bitch! Attack the face, eyes. Morph your legs into battering rams. Go primal to escape! Set boundaries (using verbal, spatial, distance controlling skills) to ward off space invaders, intrusion and would-be predators. If a person encroaches or makes you uncomfortable promptly establish borders to create space and OWN your space. Use strong (but not hostile) body posture—take a sturdy stance with hands up and palms out as if to say "Stop." Use firm unambiguous (not nebbishy) language: "Leave me alone. No thanks, I'm not interested. Back off." This isn't one-size-fits-all, so adjust volume/ intensity / attitude as needed. This could be a "test" (Is she an easy or hard target? Can I get THIS close, touch or speak to her like this...? ) so be sure your words and body-language are congruent. Add gravity: shift your center down into the basement of your being. Master this! www.thecarolinastoday.com

37

Don't fight over money, jewelry, your Gucci bag. This is self defense not "stuff defense." In a simple street robbery, throw the dog a bone—then blast. Reserve your savagery for when your life is at stake. Use your voice as a weapon to repel, dissuade and to attract attention. Many women have successfully foiled attacks by using their voice. (Me too. What... you didn't hear me?) Yell, like you're waking the dead! Be willing to make a commotion. Throw rocks though a window. Pull a fire alarm. (While you're there, grab the fire extinguisher. They make fabulous weapons.) If suspiciously approached, watch the hands—not the eyes. Eyeballs are never going to physically attack you. Hands and whatever they contain might. When driving, remain alert. If suspicious persons approach your vehicle and you cannot see their hands, hit the gas! As a general rule, don't stick your face where it doesn't belong. Disengage! Never feel forced into conversations not of your choosing—whether on the street or in a social setting. It's fine to nod, acknowledge people, and mozy on. Walk Away. If you see trouble coming - be it familial or from a stranger- and you can remove yourself, do it. There's no shame in that. Don't merely hope or wait for a person to change their behavior. Self defense means taking control and acting on your own behalf sooner than later. A moving target is harder to hit! If approached by a gunman and you can easily escape, RUN! Distance is your best defense! When driving, try to maintain enough room between your vehicle and the one in front to make a quick getaway. In just three seconds at 20 mph a car travels 90 feet—effectively out of range of most shooters. Trapped with an aggressive date or client with no easy way out? Take control. Lie. Manipulate. Redirect the mind of the man. Hey, Tiger, let's go out back. Have a smooch on the porch. But be prepared to go animal and deliver a good blow! In confrontations, mind your words. Don't resort to dissing. Here's the deal: If you humiliate or back a dude into a corner, he's more likely to go on the attack. Swallow some pride—even if he's a jerk. This is about saving your butt, not your face. Got it? Stun-n-run: If grabbed but not immobilized, get cracking and bust free. For example: crack the side of his head or ear with your thwacking hand or loaded purse; bust your wrist or arm free with a whipping circular 'round the world' move. Holler! Kick the nearest knee or lower leg. Caution: stun-and-runs are best used when help is nearby. Not if you're isolated or fighting off a determined attacker. NEVER RELY ON JUST ONE MOVE! Use barrier methods to create distance from troublemakers. Get your tush onto the other side of big items: cars, buildings, desks, walls. Raise hell and draw attention. Point and shout: You....call the cops! Honor gut feelings; stay in touch with your fear! Whether you hear fear's signal as a quiet voice in your head or as alarming sensations... obey! Real fear is an agent of survival. Its prime directive is to keep you alive. Honoring fear and intuitive hunches— whether with strangers or intimates—could save your life.

DuPont State Forest... Waterfalls, Hiking, Biking

A favorite waterfall hike in the

Asheville area is at DuPont State Forest, located between Brevard and Hendersonville. Located about 40 miles southwest of Asheville, this 10,000-acre North Carolina state forest is home to 90 miles of hiking trails. A three-mile roundtrip hike (mostly level with a couple of climbs) takes you to three beautiful waterfalls (Hooker, Triple and High Falls). Or take a 7-mile DuPont waterfall hike. The three mile waterfall hike at DuPont State Forest is most crowded on weekend afternoons. For more solitude, arrive early and visit on weekdays. Or take a breakfast for a very early morning hike and picnic on the roads at Triple Falls.

Hooker Falls From the Hooker Falls parking area (adjacent to the river), take a short walk to the right to Hooker Falls. There is a observation area above the falls, and you can continue on the trail to reach the base of the falls. This is a popular spot for wading and swimming in Casade Lake at the foot of the 12-foot waterfall. From Hooker Falls, turn around and go past the parking area (and across the road bridge to the other side of the river) and follow the trail upstream to the more impressive Triple Falls and High Falls. www.thecarolinastoday.com

47

Triple Falls Less than 1/2 mile from the

Hooker Falls parking area, you will arrive at an overlook for

Triple Falls with three cascades with a total 120-foot drop. Just

past the overlook, a trail forks off

to the left and heads down to land

on a large rock area below the top two falls and atop the third. It's a great place to relax or have a

picnic, while you enjoy the views up and down the waterfall. See more photos of Triple Falls.

High Falls From Triple Falls, continue

about 1/2 mile on the High Falls Trail to the largest waterfall, a 150-foot cascade down an

inclined plane of granite. After a few turns and a short, steep hill, see a wonderful view of High

Falls on the left. Take the River

Bend Trail along the river to the

base of High Falls. Do not climb on the rocks near the base, since it's very dangerous. See more photos of High Falls.

Bridal Veil Falls Hike or bike 2.2 miles from

High Falls parking area to this 120-foot tall waterfall that

gradually cascades over a rock

slope. See our Bridal Veil Falls Guide for more.

Covered Bridge To cross the beautiful covered

bridge at the top of High Falls, continue on the trail to the

Covered Bridge Trail. The

bridge was built in 2000 for a planned, exclusive real estate

development. Thankfully, the state bought the land (after a long legal battle) from

the developer so it could be preserved.

Vegetable Planting Guide For Eastern North Carolina Getting Started‌ There is much to consider when planning a vegetable garden. When is the right time to plant? How long does it take? This guide is a starting place to help provide research-based knowledge to get growing. Each category corresponds to a column of information you need to know to successfully grow a vegetable garden.

Geographic Range: This planting guide is intended to encompass the growing region that begins in the coastal plain region and extends throughout the piedmont. Some areas may experience pockets of warmer or colder weather and should use this as a starting point and adapt information depending on the specific seasonal climate conditions. Gardeners growing on the coast may be able to start crops a week earlier in the spring and a week later in the fall than those listed.

Spring Planting Date / Fall Planting Date

Climbing Peas

North Carolina has a tremendous climate for growing vegetables. A cool spring, warm summer and mild winter enables gardeners to have three seasons to produce a bounty of crops. Many vegetables can be planted twice during the year. For example, plants in the cabbage family, like broccoli, cabbage, collards, kale and kohlrabi, can be grown in the spring and the fall/winter. Some warm season crops like tomatoes, squash, pepper and beans can only be grown in months where there is no danger of freezing temperatures.

Planting Type Depending on the crop, gardeners can directly sow seeds into the ground (think watermelon, squash, beans, lettuce, carrots), while others must be started indoors (tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, etc). Seeds that do not transplant well should be sown

Curled Parsley www.thecarolinastoday.com

55

directly into the garden beds and are labeled in the planting guide as ‘direct seed.’ To plant seeds indoors, fill a growing container with a seed starting potting soil. Sow seeds to the depth given in the planting guide and grow in a sunny window or under grow lights for the amount of time also listed in the planting guide.

Plant Indoors For vegetable and herb crops that will be sown indoors, this column lists the number Parsley Bush of weeks to start crops before they are ready to be transplanted into the garden.

Days to Harvest Vegetables have a broad range of days they need to grow until they are ready for harvest. Radishes might only take thirty days, whereas it takes nearly three years for an asparagus crown to mature and be ready for picking. Climatic conditions and cultivar choices can influence the days to harvest.

Planting Depth A common rule of thumb is to plant seeds at a depth that is two to three times the width of the seed. Most seeds prefer to be tucked into the soil, but some, like carrots and turnips only need to be gently pressed into the soil with a bare covering of soil.

Planting Space Information presented in this column lists the proper spacing between mature plants to ensure optimal growth and development. Many seeds have variable germination percentages and rates and can be sown closer together and later thinned to proper spacing. 56

Brad Redding

PGA Master Professional The Members Club at Grande Dunes Golf Instruction Editor BradReddingGolf.com

“THE SET UP THE BEGINNING OF A GREAT SWING” The golf swing has a lot of cause and effect relationships in it. When you try to fix the effect you are really handicapping yourself because you haven’t fixed the real problem. There are many times I can fix one element in a student’s swing and will correct many other problems. The set –up at address is one of the key ingredients to making a proper golf swing. It is one of the “fundamentals.” How you start really effects how well are you able to swing.

1

2

This is how I see most golfers set up at address (photo1) I call this a “C” posture. It kind of resembles a C. This posture is where they bend from their back and waist. It is not athletic and makes it very difficult to turn. Like many of my techniques in teaching I want students to find the opposite of what they are doing. I have devised a drill that helps golfers get into what I call an “S” posture (photo 2) www.thecarolinastoday.com

63

3

Stand at attention with you feet should width apart. Take a golf club and place it on your back running from your head to buttocks. (photo 3) 64

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

4

While keeping the club on your head and buttocks bend forward from your hips. (photo 4) Do not let the club come away from you head or buttocks. Your lower spine will be arched inward, away from the shaft. If you do this in front of a mirror you will see you back looks very straight. You weight should be forward over the arches and balls of your feet. Flex your knees slightly. www.thecarolinastoday.com

65

5

After you have gotten into an S posture you now need to find a neutral posture. From the S posture relax your lower back slightly (Photo 5) this is the posture you will need to make an athletic swing. 66

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

6

To achieve this set up in front of a mirror and make sure if you drew a line up the club shaft it would bisect your left eye. You might even feel that your hands are behind the ball. You never want your hands in front at address (Photo 6) www.thecarolinastoday.com

67

7

The important element is if you draw a line up the shaft that line would intersect your left eye (Photo 7) 68

THE CAROLINAS TODAY

FALL 2014

8

From the front view your feet are shoulder width apart for 5 to 7 irons. Slightly closer from 8 iron to wedge and slightly wider from 4 iron to Driver. Ball position is also a key ingredient as the ball only moves 3 ball widths from driver to wedge (Photo 8) www.thecarolinastoday.com

69

9

The last piece to a correct set-up is how your feet, hips, knees, arms and eyes are aligned. It is important the keep all of them parallel to each other. Take an alignment stick or golf club and lay it on the ground. Now take a golf club and lay it on your knees, then your hips, then your shoulders and then you eyes to see that each one is parallel to the alignment stick on the ground. (Photos 9,10,11, 12) Not having them parallel will have an effect on many elements in a golf swing. 70

It's Autumn again, which means if you are planning to plant garlic, the time is now! You can plant garlic in the winter or in the spring. Planting at this time of the year means that the bulbs will have a chance to grow roots before the ground freezes and it will be ready to harvest in early summer. You can buy seed garlic from seed supply stores and there are a ton of fancy varieties available. If you are like me and don’t exactly have a green thumb, you can use garlic bought from the grocery store. The generic white kind will do in a pinch. The following years you can be prepared and start several different varieties, as there are a ton of interesting garlic varieties to try. When preparing your beds loosen the soil in your garden bed to 12 inches deep, garlic needs deep roots. Separate the cloves of garlic. This is called "cracking", pull the clove apart and pull away the separate bulbs. Each bulb you plant will grow into it's own complete plant, producing another clove. You can start the bulbs in a small pot, but it is not necessary.

Size matters, so choose the largest cloves and the largest bulbs from those cloves. The larger bulbs will produce the biggest cloves. Use the smaller one in sauce. Plant the bulbs about 6 inches apart and 3 inches deep. Be careful not to over-water. Garlic doesn't like to get too wet and it might rot if the soil stays too soggy. Elevated beds work well for preventing soggy soil. Growing garlic in your garden is a great way to help prevent pests. The smell will deter them. Consider planting garlic around the borders of your garden. My Grandfather used to plant peppers and garlic, though the local rabbit population soon grew fond of the pepper leaves.

Garlic scapes are often harvested early so that the bulbs will grow bigger.

The Use of Force Spectrum: Introduction In the realm of personal protection, there are several disciplines that can be utilized to ensure one’s safety. It is very important to study these disciplines and their application, so that not only is the use of force decision applicable to protecting one’s self, but also so that it is appropriate from a legal standpoint. This spectrum covers the various aspects of interpersonal conflict, and has many validations and many myths associated with it. This series is a look at the use of force spectrum and its application. In later articles, we will look at each one more closely. The use of force spectrum: •Awareness of Self: A general understanding of one’s own responses and capabilities. •Situational awareness: The ability to observe and understand the factors in one’s environment. •Avoidance: The ability to preclude contact with another person or group. •De-escalation: The ability to use charisma-based techniques to talk down an unfriendly contact. •Physical force: The ability to physically mitigate harm to one’s self while precluding further aggression against one’s self, such as empty hand martial techniques or smaller weapon items not designed to inflict severe harm. •Advanced physical force: The ability to use tools or techniques to mitigate harm to one’s self while precluding further aggression against one’s self, such as advanced martial training with small or medium weapon items, chemical sprays, electromuscular disruption, or adaptations of lethal force items designed to minimize damage (such as bean bag rounds from a shotgun). •Lethal force: The ability to use tools or techniques that are designed to incapacitate through bodily trauma, where the result is generally known to potentially cause fatality, such as knife, heavy bludgeoning weapons, or firearm discharge. •Advanced lethal force: The sum of all lethal force weapons designed to incapacitate areas or multiple targets, such as military-use items like grenades, mines, or bombs. This is generally not an applicable option for personal protection. For purposes of our analysis, we will be omitting this category from our analysis. In theory In the analysis of the use of force spectrum, it is generally shown from the least severe harm to the most severe harm. This represents the growing chance of harm to one’s self (and to the attacker), which is generally referred to as the ‘severity’ of the situation. It gives a very good idea of the escalating use of force one may be required to call upon in a situation. It can also reflect the increased interaction a person has with the contact (or attacker). Understanding where an action falls on this severity spectrum is very important in determining the legality of a response to attack, and what may or may not be allowed in one’s state or country.

Disproportionate Force Disproportionate force is the idea that, even though the severity of each use of force category might be equivalent, the quantity or severity might be offset because of extra capabilities or greater numbers. For instance, an 80-year-old lady attacking a person in a store with an umbrella because he got the last eggplant for sale does not necessarily warrant even a physical response. Moving away from granny’s wrath (avoidance) is sufficient action to mitigate the situation. In relation to the protector’s capabilities, granny’s wrath may not constitute legitimate “physical force” against the protector. Conversely, a lone individual against 4 unarmed muggers is also disproportionate, because the protector in the situation may not be able to effectively mitigate the attacks of four people. The extra attackers represent that the force is disproportionate to the protector’s ability to mitigate the harm. In this case, escalating the use of force into a lethal force response may be warranted. If you are a lone defender and have dependents, such as a wife and child, disproportionate force may also be justified because, if the protector is incapacitated, it is possible the wife and child may also be harmed. In this case, the disproportionate force may be justified because of the lesser capabilities of the wife and child. In Practice When put into practice, one must not look at this use of force spectrum and think there is an obligation to ascend through the spectrum from least severe to most severe. For example, a person protecting himself from a knife attacker is already beyond the escape and avoidance options, and the verbal de-escalation options are likely going to be of little avail. Going right into the physical force and greater severity options may be entirely appropriate. In practice, having each of the use of force categories immediately accessible allows quick access to the most appropriate force response. Situational awareness and self-awareness will allow the protector to know what category to access to minimize harm, and legal understanding will temper the response with justifiability.

Training Opportunities Training in each aspect of use of force is ideal, but one must also train in the transitions between them. Going from verbal de-escalation into a fist fight is fairly well understood in our society. Going from physical (martial arts) into firearms (firing range) is not well understood by most. Look for training opportunities that train in these transitions, such as force on force training.

He is a black belt in classical Yagyu Jiu Jutsu, Assistant Instructor at the Martial Science Center, and Instructor and Program Coordinator at Martial Tactical Training of Michigan. Furthermore, he is an NRA Instructor for Basic Pistol and Personal Protection firearm training. 92
