His dam, Tylertown United has been one of our most consistent producers and traces back to the legendary JM Lady Remington 5S cow that has been a foundational donor for KenCo in TN. We think this one is extremely unique and have full confidence in his future.

Homo Polled Black Baldy. In 2012 Escalade smashed the Iowa Beef Expo records and his sons continue to sort themselves to the top. Consistent calving ease, outstanding growth, maternal & carcass values; combined with that extra special “something” that sets them apart from the other sire groups. Well, Fleetwood fits that description to the letter. As the third calf out of our Ladonna donor cow, Fleetwood hit the ground at just 82# and weaned off at 815#. He combines all this in a calm, cool package that catches your eye and demands your attention. You’re gonna want to check this baldy out.

Everyone loves a baldy and this is no exception. He is a tank from front to back, powerful and well-muscled. He has a great spring in his rib and is uniform in his design. He has a ton of thickness and will add pounds but does it while still being correct. This is the kind of bull we all should be looking for. Oh and don’t forget, his flush mate sister just topped our fall sale and his dam was our high selling donor a few years back. Royal blood here. Check out the video on our website www.woodsidelandandcattle.com.

I bought this bull’s mother at the 2018 Foundation Female sale as a bred female. She really caught my eye as she possesses loads of belly and the smooth flat shoulder that ties into her neck and not to mention her huge hip! Mr President possesses those same qualities with his huge hip, big top, tree trunk feet and legs, his amazing ability to move like a cat, his gentle disposition, and rocket front. He is a bull that can make those high gaining fancy feeder steers and those beautiful cows standing in your pasture!

We were excited about another P2B mating and this one struck even harder than anticipated. From the day this dude hit the ground, he’s been impressive. In no time came tremendous bone, a huge foot; it seemed he doubled in size each day. He’s a production machine and will make his mark on a calf crop. We love how all of that comes together in such a neat and attractive package; one you look forward to studying each day. And with all that power and substance, he’s so soft and sweet at the ground, it’s a pleasure to see him go. Just be sure to have your bidding hand ready come sale day, so it’s not for the last time.

First Innovator calf born on our farm and he surely won’t be the last. Once again, taking it back to cow families. This guy’s grand-dam had all the look of the front pasture kind and went on to make some great production bulls for our customers. His mama has started to follow suit and hit the mark with 303G. We are liking the Innovators for the impressive numbers and dimension with a little style to boot. He’s got it all - 133.5 API, 11.1 CE, big ‘ol soggy middle and a stout, square hip. Though packed with power and bone - he comes away with a nice, flat shoulder and great neck extension. Cherry on top would be a great set of running gear and a heck of a disposition. Check, and check.

He has great depth and thickness and keeps it in a moderate package. Don’t forget his dam was a first calf heifer and I think she did a great job. Most importantly, look at the numbers. He is heifer safe. Check out the video on our website www.woodsidelandandcattle.com.

“Shoot to Thrill” is a true calving ease sire backed by cow power and performance. He is in the top 10% of the breed for calving ease and the top 3% for birth weight. He is also in the top 30% on API. If you could see his young dam you would be even more fired up. Study this individual though and you will see a powerfully made, big footed, sound individual that is safe to use on heifers! 151G is the real deal!

This Executive Order x Gypsy Soul son is one of the best bulls we have ever sold. He is just about perfect in every way. He is really stout made, soggy, super long necked, and can walk with the best of them. The only time he was shown he was selected calf champion bull. I mean for those that like to get them out and walk and really critique, this bull will impress the most discriminate buyer. On top of his tremendous look, this bull is out of a former Champion at the Iowa State Fair that has been a top donor for JS Simmental. They have sold several great siblings through their sales and this bull represents the same quality. Take a good look at this one, as it is hard to find bulls with this much look and this much pedigree to back it up.

I’ll admit that I have a soft spot in my heart for a cool red one, but this guy is hands down the best red bull that we have ever raised. He is stout, powerful yet sound as a cat, homo polled with eye appeal to burn and good natured. His full sister gathered a lot of attention at State Fair and while we certainly appreciate the many offers to sell her, we plan to build a red program around her so we are excited to offer her brother to you. Whether he goes on Simmental cows, Red Angus cows or commercial cows there is no doubt in my mind that he will be a standout in your bull battery and be the one that you will want to save every heifer calf out of.

This homo black, homo polled young stud is great structured, good dispositioned, right in his growth curve and should be safe for use on heifers. His full brother has been our leading herd sire for the past three years and now we have added a full sister to him to the cow herd as well. He is an outcross pedigree on the top side and is a direct descendant of the Ebony’s Joy cow family on the bottom side. If you want a versatile bull that will let you sleep easy during calving season and still add pounds at weaning be sure to study this guy!

This Quantum Leap son is a true herd sire that will work in a variety of operations. He boasts a 71 pound birthweight with an 821 pound weaning weight and is on target to be north of 1,600 at a year. This is no surprise to us though as this is the 3rd calf out of his young dam and the past two calves have been our high selling bulls the past two years. Both of them had birthweights in the 70’s with weaning weights over 800 and yearling weights over 1,600. Needless to say after producing 904G she has now earned her way into the donor pen and will be flushed this spring after she calves. Also as an added bonus this guy is homo polled and has a very high probability of being homo black as well. This guy is truly special as the numbers speak for themselves on his performance and phenotypically he puts it all together as well with a ton of middle capacity, smooth muscle pattern and structural correctness on the move with a good disposition to boot! Be sure to look him up on sale day.

Very smooth on the go, long bodied, and muscular. With good EPDs across the board i think he will serve you well whether you’re raising seed stock or calves for the feedlot. If a baldie with a big sappy belly, tons of muscle and a cool design doesn’t do it for you I don’t know what would. That best describes this one to a tee. A good mating with predictability is worth a lot and last year his full sister was our high selling heifer and I could sure see him being at the top of end of our bulls this year. His mother has a perfect udder and does a great job every year. So if you need to add pounds he will work for you or if you need to keep replacements he should make some darn nice ones as well. As an added bonus he’s good dispositioned and I also think he would be just fine for use on heifers too.

His Sire, Long’s The Player is a must use AI sire we syndicated for $30,000 in 2016. His powerful donor dam was 13th Overall Percentage Female at AJSA National Classic and a direct daughter of our legendary Long’s Cowgirl donor. With the small group of Sky High calves we had this year we realized one thing- we should have used more of him! AIM HIGH is a testament to how fundamentally good these cattle are all while maintaining a quality look. It has been a few years since we have brought something to the Beef Expo. This bull we think pretty highly of he will sire some excellent calves. If you follow our program our elite donor Reflection has produced several high sellers all over the country for us. Two heifer calf siblings to this bull sold this past fall and averaged close to $7,000, don’t overlook this guy.

Quick Guide to ASA EPDs & $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): The most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A & B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15 unit difference would be expected in their progeny. Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more at weaning than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
25
Using API & TI: First determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described before, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all purpose type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring 100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a 50 API bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For a percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Units of Expression of ASA EPDs (listed alphabetically): All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all purpose sire scenario. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pound of birth weight Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Marbling (MB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal sire scenario. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.

Bull Buyers Guide How much can I afford to pay for a bull?
Written 2/6/15 by Travis Meteer for Drovers.
A popular question this time of year is “How much can I afford to pay for a bull.” My go-to answer is usually… “How much revenue loss would you have from a pasture full of open cows?” After all, we often de-value the role of the bull. We forget that he is a crucial part of the equation to making our product. Now, the question is a good one to ask. Especially after watching calf prices climb seemingly all of 2014 and the prices paid for bred heifers at year-end, it is only logical to wonder what a good bull will cost this spring. Old rules of thumb are good to reflect on. For instance, “2 times the value of a fat steer” or “4 to 5 times the value of a feeder calf” are both common measures used by old timers to determine the value of a bull. So, I tested these figures with historical prices from the Illinois Performance Tested Bull Sale and prices paid for feeders and fats from National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). As it turns out, using values from 1996 to 2014 (last 19 years) the average bull price was 4 times the value of a feeder calf and 2.1 times the value of a fat steer. Looks like those old rules of thumb work pretty well. Using these multipliers, we can speculate to the average price of bulls this coming sale season. Looking at recent market reports, 500 lb. feeder calves are bringing $2.40 or more. Thus, value of a 5-weight feeder calf is conservatively $1,200. History tells us 4 times that value will get us close to the average. Thus 4 x $1,200 = $4,800 for an average bull price. A conservative price for fat steers weighing 1300 lb. is $1.60. Therefore the math tells us a fat steer values out at nearly $2,100. The previously stated multiplier of 2.1 times the value of a fat steer would yield an average bull price of just over $4,400. So, we have a conservative range of $4,400 to $4,800 for the average bull price. That said, there will be many bulls that bring in excess of those figures. So, what factors contribute to bulls bringing more than the average? Are they worth the extra money? For simplicity, let’s say a bull breeds 25 cows per year for 4 years resulting in 100 calves over his lifespan. With these conservative assumptions, even a small improvement in a valuable trait can greatly increase a bull’s value.
For instance, Calving Ease (CE) EPD is defined as the difference in percentage of unassisted births. So, let’s say you purchase a bull that is 5 points better in his CE than the breed average for current sires. For both Angus and Simmental that would mean purchasing a bull in the top 10 % of the breed for that trait… not an unrealistic buy. The 5 point improvement should translate to 5% more unassisted births. In the real world, it’s fair to say half of assisted births don’t make it. Thus, a 5% improvement in CED could easily translate to 2.5% more calves. Out of 100 calves sired over a lifetime, that’s 2.5 more calves. The added value from improved CE would be $3,000 (2.5 more calves x 500 lbs x $2.40/ lb.). The most common example for added value of a bull is improved EPDs for weaning weight (WW). Let’s say you purchase a bull with a WW EPD of 60 (breed average for Angus is 50). That’s 10 additional pounds at weaning per calf. If the bull sires 100 calves in a lifetime and a pound is worth $2.40, then the result is $2,400 more income over his lifetime when compared to the average of current sires. Another figure bull buyers can look at are $ values (Weaned Calf Value ($W), Beef Value ($B), All-Purpose Index (API), Terminal Index (TI)). These values are expressed in dollars and if you match your herd needs with the correct index, they can help you be more profitable. Understanding and Utilizing Economic Indexes in Sire Selection is a good resource for learning more about the role $ values play in selection. When selecting your next herd sire, identify the traits that can add dollars to your operation. Don’t sacrifice functionality, structural soundness, docility, and other traits that can affect longevity. View purchasing a bull as an investment and treat it as such. Investing in a good bull that can improve profitable traits in your herd can allow your farm to be more competitive no matter the market dynamic. Bottomline, bulls are a significant contributor to profit or loss in your cattle herd. The have an impact now and for years to come if you are retaining replacement females. Look for traits that hold value in your market. Find a bull that can inject those traits. The “expense” of a bull can be a great investment in the future of your cattle herd. The legacy and potency of the Black Satin, “Boots”, legacy continues! The dominance of Boots on the tanbark coupled with the consistency of her progeny, especially the Pays to Believe mating is unreal. With three full sisters already hanging banners in the past two years the guesswork is done here. Built identical to her sisters with big legs and feet, great rib and body, and as square as you can make one. We told Bob & Nick when we had a special one for Iowa we’d bring her. It’s no secret the P2B progeny are hot, but we are really happy with the way this mating just flat out worked. It goes back to cow families; this pretty girl’s mama looks and moves incredible at her age with an ideal frame size and keeps her condition all year long. All unassisted births. 225G is just as easy-doing, sound, big-middled and attractive as mama but with a little neater front end and neck coming right out of the top of that shoulder. This Bankroll daughter is extremely long spined, big footed, and extended through her front end. Gwendolyn has been a favorite of many last summer! But, the thing that grabs us the most is her turn to her rib, not many females with this kind of length also have the rib shape to go with it. She’s got great hair and has an awesome disposition. Morgan’s family raised and showed many generations of this cow family.

This Beacon daughter out of a first-calf heifer has been a farm favorite since day one. Genevieve is long bodied, soundmade, and ranks in the top 25% or higher of Purebreds in numerous EPD traits. With her puppy dog tame attitude she should make a great project for a young junior member and a good cow in the future. Don’t forget Junior Nationals are in Grand Island, Nebraska this year.

Top 20% of the Simmental breed in 9 traits, Top 20% API and Top 15% TI and her in-herd performance to date backs all of this up. Her young SAV Bismark dam we acquired from Hilltop Simmentals raised our popular IBE feature bull last year. Jump in with confidence and build a herd around this one.

921G is a sleek necked individual with a deep sweeping ribcage. She is appreciated when set in motion. She has that show ring presence. 921G will be influential in breeding down the road. Her grand dam, PHF Pleasant Pride 3050, inherited some of the most important traits from her Angus ancestors. Excellent structural integrity with added stoutness and power, with fertility, longevity, and productivity. This may heifer is young but is cool in her build and show ring look! The awesome neck which ties into an enormous ribcage. Ideal angle to her shoulder and flexible in her hock and pasterns.

Big, stout, deep sided, attractive- all the things that you like to see in a competitive show heifer. Being backed by an outstanding maternal pedigree is just the cherry on top. The Sharper Image cattle are some of the best mothers in the breed and her dam quickly became the matriarch of our herd after her successful show career. I could write a book about this one, but it would do her more justice for you to just come see her yourself! We stand behind our cattle and are prepared to help you in anyway we can!

A full sibling to 9070 was named Champion % Simmental at the Illinois Beef Expo for the Wisnefski Family a few years back. This baldy female has cow power written all over her. Powerful foot design, added depth of flank, a trim and correct front one-third, with added skeletal width.
