52nd Annual Mark of Excellence Sale
It is with a lot of pride that we offer up this tremendous lineup of Simmental bulls, bred heifers, open heifers, and genetics for your appraisal. Yet again the Iowa Simmental membership has dug deep to offer you a set of cattle that show the diversity and quality produced in the Simmental Industry today. We are looking at some very good times in the cattle business right now, with a massive herd reduction in the west the next few years is shaping up to look very promising. The Simmental breed has done a great job over the years of focusing not only on show ring traits but has stayed at the forefront of the commercial cattlemen’s needs. Many of the bulls being offered are easy calving both on paper as well as from years of breeding, these bulls are also known for making a tremendous cross on Angus based herds. The bulls in this sale are first culled by the breeders and then are also culled by the sale committee and must make a 3# per day rate of gain as well as have a minimum scrotal of 32 cm. The entire offering is also completely free of all known lethal genetic defects. The breeders in this sale have done everything in their power to provide each of you a value added product. As with year’s past the heifer division is loaded with quality. This group of females will satisfy even the most discerning cattlemen. The open heifers are all eligible to show at the Expo as well as at the Iowa Field day. If you have any questions regarding this offering feel free to contact any of the consignors in this sale they would be more than happy to help you with your selections. We look forward to seeing each of you in Des Moines, Iowa. Thank you for your consideration, Dwyer Cattle Bob 309-337-1404 | Nick 309-337-6404 | www.dwyercattle.com

This blaze faced son of the two time Denver champ, Pay the Price, screams completeness! He’s big middled, big footed, and powerful with a striking profile. This soft structured, sleek looking bull will be sure to stamp his mark on his offspring. His dam was the 2015 Iowa State Fair Reserve purebred, and he’s already proven his success as both the Grand Champion Spring Bull Calf at the 2020 American Royal, and Reserve Champion Junior Bull at the Iowa State Fair in 2021. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to own a proven winner with a proven pedigree!

H171 is the natural calf out of our donor 5303C donor female. 5303C was our pick out of the Hudson Pines Farms dispersal with excellent reason. She is an absolute beautifully made cow that is hard to fault and she has passed these traits right on to her son. This bull is hard to fault. He is wide based, big bellied, and soft footed while still coming in a baldy package. I have been asked by more than 1 person why he is not being kept as herd sire and I do not have a very good answer except I take great pride in selling high quality cattle and watching them excel in other programs.

Homozygous Black & Polled. This black baldy HPF Optimizer son worked his way to the tip top of our fall bulls and we call him Mega. Out of one of our best Escalade daughters he hit the ground at just 84#’s, posted 851#’s at weaning, and a yearling weight of 1470#’s. His calving ease, growth, maternal, and carcass numbers are top notch. This black baldy beast combines all this in a calm, cool package that catches your eye and demands your attention. He has a smoothness and flexibility seldom found in a bull with so much mass on a moderate frame. Mega is the black baldy with so much more.

Out of a Lock Down daughter of our Mystieq donor, JOSHUA hit the ground at just 82 pounds, weaned off at 864 pounds, and posted a yearling weight of 1353. We have not brought a red bull to the Expo for quite a while. Joshua was worth the wait. His numbers are outstanding, but his structure and fluid motion are are sure to catch your eye.

This bull combines an outstanding genetic background with a masculine, functional, and quality phenotype. He is a full sib to Carson Finch’s 2019 Supreme Breeding Heifer at the Iowa State Fair FFA show. He brings herd sire feature, a stout masculine design and still has the quality you’d expect from a full sib to such an elite female. We have confidence in this bull’s ability to have a large impact in making better cattle weather you are raising feeder cattle or in the purebred business.

Power, performance, and productivity run deep in this bull’s genetic foundation. He posts an incredible spread from 79#’s at birth to 805#’s at weaning. Phenotypically he is bold sprung, deep sided, and low maintenance. I’d expect him to sire added value replacement females as well as growth efficient males. DNA tested Homo Black.

This will be one of the first sons of the $90,000 GSC Savage bull to sell anywhere and you will see why we were excited to try him early. He is as sound and soft as you could make one. His mother was Clayton’s first simmy show heifer for a reason, she was good and incredibly gentle. This bull is the same way and Clayton is excited to offer one he raised for the first time at Expo.

A rare opporunity to buy one of the best Simmental bulls to be offered at auction this spring. 5J is the complete package. He has a killer phenotype, an outstanding genotype, a full proof outcrossed pedigree, and performance that is nothing short of impressive. This guy was admired by many at the Iowa State Fair and World Beef Expo where he was named Bull Calf Champion at both events. We have had numerous breeders wanting us to price this guy but we wanted to bring our best to the 2022 Iowa Beef Expo.

I have always said if we are taking a bull to the expo he is going to be our best. This bull is just that long necked, big topped, square hipped, and as sound as can be. After you stop staring at this bull take a look at his pedigree. With a little Werning Cattle and Reck Brothers blood, he’s sure to produce. Put a little icing on top he’s a blaze face purebred.

“Unique” is the word what probably best describes Red Ranger, our Reserve Champion Spring Bull calf from the Iowa State Fair. Let’s talk about his skeleton, a square hipped bull driving that dimension down through his stifle all the way to the ground setting down squarely with a wide base and more than generous foot size.

This baldy bull is the reason we enjoy raising bulls. This guy is large-boned, extremely long fronted, and with hair that you normally wouldn’t see on a Simmental bull. His sire LTS THO Repent 31F is out of a Ruby’s Wide Open cow sired by Relentless. Repent has been consistent in the look and design of his calves. His dam, Dolly, is one of the most docile cows we own. Don’t overlook this March calf. He’s got potential in whatever his future may hold.

THO Firebird is the best red bull we have ever offered at the Iowa Beef Expo. He is extremely long fronted, long bodied, and sound on his feet. His sire THO Galaxy is one of our most successful herd bulls. A red Galaxy son was the highest selling bull at the Iowa Premier last spring. His dam 117B raised our big baldy bull we sold here in 2019. This heavy muscled red bull can increase the size of frame and provide extra pounds in any cattle operation. Her dam, SLG Donna 851, is our young upcoming donor that you will likely hear more about in the coming years. She holds the same pedigree as the $110,000 Sandeen Donna 8302 female, which is likely the most sought-after genetic contributor in the Sandeen donor arsenal currently. AI 6/21/21 to TJ Gold #: 3582577 The sort of standout female that you will only find at a premier showcase. Miss Honey is a direct daughter of the famed Honey R007 who has created a legacy of success starting with her time at Hudson Pines and continuing with leading daughters being sold and campaigned by Schaeffer Show Cattle. A full sibling to this mating was a Division Champion at the 2019 NAILE. Honey R007 herself was a two time major Champion as well as the High Point Simmental Heifer in Indiana in 2016. The Style x Honey mating has worked countless times and this female shows the prowess storied within these genetics. Last year at the Bricktown National Sale in OKC, a maternal sister to H02 topped the bred heifer division and a few weeks later was crowned Champion at the Dixie National in Mississippi. H02 is massive in her center body, ultra sleek to her head and neck and extremely sound at the ground. H02’s dam has proven to be one of the most consistent and potent Simmental donors in the breed today. Bred up to WHF/CCS/JS Double Up G365 only adds value. A sure sale highlight.

This baldy Mayhem daughter was one of our favorites all summer long. This female is stout and massively made while still being sound and have enough pizazz to compete in the show ring. Here is one that will have a great show career but her most promising days are beyond that in the pasture.

Here is a unique baldy Mayhem heifer that is young enough that she falls into a different division. This was our 2nd to last calf born last spring and she has been a standout all summer and fall. This heifer is hard to fault. She is sound, soft made, with excellent hair.

Who would not love a red hot simangus heifer to add some flash to the ring or front pasture? Juniper came out easy and has not looked back since. If you want to add some depth and color to your herd look no further, and with WLE Uno Mas X549 as her sire you know she has the genetics to match the flash and make daughters you can benefit from for years to come.

April heifer out of really good commercial Angus cow. This will be the first female to sell out of this cow. The other 3 have been retained. One reason I can let this one go is because she has a twin sister. The one selling is the bigger of the 2. This heifer weaned off the same size as the rest of the calves. The other is a little smaller. She is extremely gentle, will be good for a first year showman.

Quick Guide to ASA EPDs & $ Indexes Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): The most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A & B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15 unit difference would be expected in their progeny. Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more at weaning than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. $ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades. All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
31
Using API & TI: First determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described before, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all purpose type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring 100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a 50 API bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For a percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Units of Expression of ASA EPDs (listed alphabetically): All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all purpose sire scenario. Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pound of birth weight Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Marbling (MB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal sire scenario. Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
