Herd Health:

Health papers for interstate travel will be available. Bred females have been pregnancy checked safe. The buyer has within 21 days to re-examine those females. If any animals are found to be open within those 21 days please contact Brad at once for an adjustment to be made. Updated breeding information will be available sale week; this sheet will take precedence over statements made in this catalog.

Insurance: Insurance will be available through James F. Bessler of Great American Insurance Group, 815899-9121. Please contact Nick Dwyer after the sale to insure your purchases.

Bull Housing:

Bulls purchased at the sale will return to Mc2 for futher development free of charge until May 1, 2023 at that point they need to be picked up by buyer. During this period we ask that you insure your bulls to avoid any issues.

Absentee Bidding:

If you can’t attend the sale and would like to bid via phone please contact any member of Sale Management or a Sale Consultant in order to discuss our sight unseen buyer guarantee. Please contact us by no later than January 26th in order to receive a bidder number so that we can insure that we have someone on the phone with you prior to your lot entering the sale ring. Please note that the sale will start on time and will move quickly so be prepared to make your bids promptly.

Once again I’d like to welcome everyone to our 6th Annual sale. It’s been an interesting year to say the least. We’ve seen near drought conditions here in the Midwest and as I sit down to write this on the 28th day of December our temperature hit 64 degrees. Just a week ago we saw the temperature hit -40. I told the boys I don’t think I’ve ever done chores in temperatures so extreme in just one week!

The sell off of the US cow herd is in full swing as $15 beans had their way with pasture and hay ground this growing season. Record number of cull cows have hit the sale barns in staggering numbers all over the Midwest. Good things on the horizon for those of us that have weathered the storm.

Once again, we will be offering a group of performance oriented, maternally based, phenotypically desirable and most importantly, a profit driven set of herd sires. Regardless of environment we feel these bulls will add sellable pounds, eye appeal, structural integrity and overall increased profitability. Top to bottom there isn’t a bull offered that we wouldn’t use on our own cow herd.

In addition, we are offering another set of bred heifers from the heart of our registered herd. This is not a decision made easily, but as our cow herd continues to grow, we need an avenue to keep our numbers in check. These females will give you an opportunity to see first hand what our entire operation is founded on, our cowherd.

Quick Guide to American Simmental Association EPDs & $ Indexes

Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): The most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’ EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A & B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15 unit difference would be expected in their progeny. Key to using EPDs is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15 pounds more at weaning than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15 percent more unassisted births in first calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed.

$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes come in. Through well conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry, and dairy genetics over the last several decades.

All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade & yield.

Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.

Using API & TI: First determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described before, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.)

The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all purpose type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring 100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a 50 API bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd x 4 yr. = $6,000).

A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For a percentile rankings or more detailed information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org.

Units of Expression of ASA EPDs (listed alphabetically):

All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all purpose sire scenario.

Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat.

Birth Weight (BW): Pound of birth weight

Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.

Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.

Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.

Marbling (MB): Marbling score.

Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth.

Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age.

Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal sire scenario.

Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
