Dynamic Communities (DC): How long have you been a part of the User Group community? Kerry Hataley: Since 2008. I attended the very first meeting in Orlando in the basement of the Peabody Hotel (24) of us. DC: What made you decide to join a User Group? Kerry: The sense of community, seeing the power that Convergence had under Doug and team that was getting lost by Microsoft. DC: As a partner, what are the benefits year over year of being a part of a user group? Kerry: The networking of peers and potential customers. Being able to share knowledge. DC: How has your relationship with Dynamics GP changed since you’ve become involved in the user group? How does that reflect in your relationship with your customers? Kerry: I have been involved with Dynamics GP since 1994 (Version 2.0 on a MAC), so I have always been invested in the product. GPUG has allowed me to keep expanding my knowledge via the community and their collective knowledge that is available to me. DC: Can you share an example of how being a part of a user group has helped you or your company? Kerry: I was warned early on by some people, that joining the community and participating would decrease my customer billings. They argued that by letting the customer have access to this free knowledge, I would lose a large portion of my consulting business. In my head, this didn’t make sense, so I moved forward. Since that time, I can say that I found their concerns to be false. I will argue with any partner that the community will not decrease your business but makes your business more profitable with not only more clients but with more informed and intelligent clients. What has been the catalyst for the significant changes to the Cloud Business Applications competency as Microsoft rejuvenates relationships with its customers and partners? Why now? And what was Microsoft hoping this would accomplish for the company? Updates to the Cloud Business Applications competency are driven by the customer need to identify partners who have greater capability to implement and deploy Dynamics 365. The bar has been raised for our gold and silver partners in this competency, and this journey to differentiate our most qualified partners will continue as we include more customer-centric measures of success and more skills evaluations for partners to indicate their areas of expertise. This change is needed now as we have more customers who have moved to our cloud platform and we want to connect these customers to the right partners for their business needs. While the program has gone through tremendous changes, how does the competency program benefit partners and customers? The changes to the Cloud Business Application program will improve the experience for customers as they select partners who will have met a higher threshold and proven greater customer success in their Dynamics practice. Customers can have greater confidence in the capabilities of our partners with gold and silver competency as we continue to iterate on the qualification model for our partners. Partners will benefit from these changes as they will be able to differentiate themselves as highly capable in their Dynamics practice. The gold and silver Cloud Business Applications competency badges will hold a high value that will continue to grow as we take our partners on this transformation.

Did partners have any say into how the program was built out? How were partners involved in the process? Microsoft has established forums such as our Partner Advisory Council (PAC) of Dynamics partners to provide input and feedback on any significant change to our business. We consulted with our Dynamics PAC for over a year on current and upcoming changes to the Cloud Business Applications competency eligibility requirements, timing, and related role-based certifications. Please explain the relationship between cloudbased and on-prem in terms of certification importance. Do the competencies lean more towards one vs the other? Microsoft is a cloud company. The Cloud Business Applications competency focuses on cloudbased technical capability and performance. We are focused on providing greater differentiation to cloud partners and this is where we see the greatest customer need and partner opportunity. Explain the difference between gold and silver level competencies? What is the reasoning for multiple levels? The difference between gold and silver competency indicates the level of the partner’s capability a customer can expect.  Partners that attain a gold competency are differentiated as those with the highest level of expertise in their evaluated areas. Fundamentally, do you expect the certification process and relationship to continue to change, or does this program signal a framework where evolution can be built upon it? Please explain. Certification programs will continue to evolve in the future as new products are introduced to the market. We continue to evaluate various roles within customer and partner organizations and will make determinations on release new rolebased certifications as necessary.

How do you see the competency program evolving in the future? Are there any new phases being worked on now? Anything along the lines of programs, process, benefits or scope? Competencies, which are for partners that deliver services, will continue to evolve as customer need and market changes require continuous adjustments. Microsoft always considers the best way to provide a highly reliable program that meets the needs of customers who are looking for partners to meet their business needs. We also examine how to deliver a valuable partner program experience that meets the needs of our partners at various stages of their practice journey. We have begun introducing advanced specializations for partners that have specific gold competencies which further differentiate customer scenarios in which partners have expertise. Advanced specializations for business applications scenarios are coming starting in calendar year 2020. What is Microsoft doing to help partners as these competency changes take effect? Microsoft has invested heavily in providing more training and enablement resources for partners to increase their skill level in order to meet the higher bar of the Cloud Business Applications competency. Additionally, there have been greater number of bootcamp training events held. It is important to us to support our partners and provide resources to enable them to best take advantage of the competency program.

The Road to AppSource by Benny Dor, Operations Lead, Foodware 365 We are approaching the end of this calendar year. Looking back, I can already conclude that it was an exciting, energizing and challenging year for the Foodware 365 team rebuilding the solution from scratch. Resetting their minds, no more typical ERP restrictions, thanks to having access to the whole Microsoft Dynamics 365 platform. This platform enables us to create the most valuable solution in the Food Industry. There is still one hurdle to take and to explore, the road to AppSource. AppSource is Microsoft’s app store where users can try & buy their purpose driven extensions for Dynamics 365 Business Central and other Microsoft business applications. If you have been following our blogs the past year you already know creating Foodware 365 is not solely focused on creating lines of codes. Creating Foodware 365 has many domains where processes were needed to be designed, evaluated and secured. If we take a look at AppSource, technology and marketing are two main focus areas.

For us, the ISVs, it does not end after the app is live on AppSource, actually we’re driving upwards into the next intersection. As Business Central will continuously be updated for Microsoft, so should our apps. That means that we already have designed and put these processes in place. Updating our apps does not only mean compatibility with every new Business Central version. More importantly, we will continuously adjust and add features and functions in our apps, making sure that we help our end users not only with today’s challenges, but even on the challenges of tomorrow.

When it comes to the technology part, an app is more than just a set of tables, pages and functions. It is complemented with automated test scripts, version control, upgrade code, languages and much more. To ensure a troublefree experience from an end-user perspective every app is validated by Microsoft. First of all they run through a set of comprehensive automated tests. Prior to making it available on AppSource the apps will also be tested manually and feedback will be supplied to us. Besides the technology also marketing makes up a big part of the AppSource validation. This extends from clear app descriptions to work instructions and app brochures. For Microsoft the goal of these validations is to ensure a consistent end user experience while browsing through AppSource finding the right solution. When he or she has found the correct app, Microsoft need to make sure it can be installed easily and runs on Business Central. The end user should not hit any issues within their environment, for them it should be business as usual. Just one difference: a Foodware 365 solution is available in their environment. 12 | The Partner Channel Magazine

PARTNERS NEED TO EVOLVE

As a marketing partner for the technology channel, we have seen significant changes in this industry many times over, but this is a real evolution. The cloud has forced many of our partner clients to adapt in ways they haven’t before—from the products they sell, to how they deploy them, to finding new ways to bring value to their customers. Technology marketing has also changed significantly in the past few years. New tools, new channels and new customer expectations are just a few reasons why it’s time to evolve your marketing to engage today’s customers. Our senior consultants have five ways you can get started.

1. Technology

Technology is the center of your universe (or at least your channel). You market it, you sell it, you implement it, you customize it, and you support it. You are crushing technology. Then why is it something we see a lot of partners and ISVs struggle with when it comes to their own marketing? Just like you want your prospects and customers to upgrade their ERP and CRM systems, it’s likely time to evolve your marketing technology. There are many different directions you can go with technology for marketing, but let’s focus on one key area – marketing automation. First, it’s important to note that tools like Constant Contact and Mailchimp are email distribution tools, not marketing automation tools. While you do get some insight about your email campaigns, you do not get as much as you would from a true marketing automation tool. We hear quite often that marketing needs to prove its value. However, it’s difficult to prove what’s working and what’s not when campaigns and events are not tracked consistently. With a true marketing automation tool, you can integrate data with CRM and automate many tasks around email marketing, social media posting and even ad campaigns. Not only will you capture more data, you’ll be able to use it to understand how campaigns are being received and responded to. You will also create a smoother, more consistent, and more personalized experience for your prospects and customers. Another big benefit is helping your marketing and sales teams work together to close deals faster and more effectively. Who doesn’t want that?

2. LinkedIn

Think of LinkedIn as a “tradeshow from your couch.” There is a lot of opportunity, but if you just show up and walk the floor, you’re going to get lackluster results. According to TPMG’s 2019 Technology Marketing Benchmarks and Trends Report, less than half the technology marketers surveyed said they were using LinkedIn successfully. A majority of partners are in what we call the “just browsing” phase. Walking the tradeshow floor, with no budget and no presence. To evolve your LinkedIn marketing and see results, you need to: • Optimize. Strengthen your presence with a content calendar incorporating product event calendars from Microsoft, as well as your own events and activities. Build your brand with original, consistent banners for your company and employee profiles. • Publish. Post at least twice a week and publish longform articles through LinkedIn Publisher. What should you post? - Share highlights from your blogs and link back to your site. - Have all employees write blogs from events and tradeshows they attend. - Share articles from other thought leaders around the web and add your comments. • Engage. Content published by companies that involve their employees in their LinkedIn plan reach twice as many people as those who do not have a companywide program. To get better results from your LinkedIn content: - Train your employees. Share how they can connect to your company and optimize their profiles by adding your company banners and branding. - Make it easy. Use tools like GaggleAmp to notify employees of all your posts, provide specific actions (post, comment, etc.) and even give them the message to post! If you aren’t ready to implement a platform to manage your employee engagement, be prepared to send out emails. - Incentivize. GaggleAMP can track each employee’s activities and reward “points” for participation. Or, you can provide companywide rewards when you reach your organizational goals through LinkedIn. • Amplify Your Reach. Use the FULL suite of LinkedIn tools for more direct lead generation. This includes paid advertising (sponsoring posts to people outside your audience), as well as Sales Navigator for accountbased and niche marketing.

3. SEO

SEO is as important as it’s ever been and, if you’ve been neglecting it, it’s time to make it a priority. Here are a few tips to give you some direction. When writing your content, keywords are still essential. They can help focus your content and give you a peek into what users are seeking help with, but they may not improve your organic rankings. Instead of writing around keywords, write for the prospects you’re hoping will buy your products. Search engine spiders don’t buy anything from you—people do—so make sure your content answers their questions. Not sure what questions they ask? Start with your own sales team or support desk, or create an account on Quora where you can get a glimpse into the type of knowledge your audience is seeking. With Google’s latest update, BERT, content marketing has become more important because the algorithm has been adjusted to understand natural language processing. You’ve probably already seen BERT at work during recent searches. For example, you might type into the Google search something like “parking on a hill with no curb” and, in the past, would have received directions on how to park on a hill. With the new update, Google now understands that you want to know how to park on a hill when there is no curb available and will deliver a more relevant result. What does this all mean for you? It means you need to get very specific with the content you create. Typically, when you write informational content, the pieces tend to be longer (500 words or more). While you may see much of your long-form content ranking well, the new algorithm doesn’t focus on length of content, but on the QUALITY of the content and how relevant it is to answering the search string. So, tying this back to what type of content you should create, focus on creating content that is unique, informative, useful and compelling. If someone is typing “how to reconcile bank accounts in Dynamics 365 Business Central” in the search box, then that is the article you should be writing. As mentioned, a good place to look for content ideas would be your own support team. Ask them for common questions they hear and write blogs and articles to answer them. You can bet that if one person is asking, there are many more with the same question and why not pull them into your site for the answer. The key takeaway is that you need to create highly specific content, which is the perfect segue to our next topic—going vertical.

4. Vertical Marketing

At a recent Microsoft Alumni panel, Dan Lewis (ex-Microsoft product manager and founder of Convoy) told a great story. He found himself unemployed at one point and was looking for a project or job that would excite him. It turns out in all his travels, he met a host of disgruntled truckers. Truckers, as you can imagine, put in many hours, travel long distances and are often forced to haul loads that are not very profitable. They often absorb penalties if they’re not able to deliver their loads on time (due to weather or an accident) and can make a poor and unpredictable living. He talked to hundreds of truckers, became an expert in their issues and frustrations and, as a result, founded Convoy. With Convoy, haulers are able to find drivers and the drivers are able to find more profitable loads that fit their schedule and routes. So, what can we learn from Dan? Specialize. And by specialize, it means finding the niche where you can be most successful and where competition and solutions are lacking. Even if you’ve been vertically focused for a long time, there are always lessons you can learn. With the latest innovations in IoT, AI, and machine learning, partners and ISVs have an opportunity to evolve and expand beyond selling siloed solutions. Be careful of following others, the idea behind being vertically focused is to be unique, otherwise you flatten the market and diminish your ability to charge a premium. Take the time to review your marketing materials, and using the recommendations we have about content pillars, create 2-3 new items that highlight new or additional solutions you’re bringing to market. Identify unfilled needs: Like Dan, seek to understand the following: • Where do businesses continue to struggle? • Where are they poorly served? • Could you expand beyond your current customer base? For example, if you’re in the Mining sector, is Oil and Gas or Natural Gas Exploration the next best thing for you? Or is localizing your solution geographically within the Mining sector a better option? Specialized organizations that are well served are unlikely to switch service providers based on price. They place a high value on companies that truly know their business. If you’re expanding to another vertical, look at your marketing best practices and clone them. If there was a specific piece of content or series of articles that resonated well, consider that a starting point. Don’t neglect publications and advertising as a way to build your brand in a new area. Knowing what’s available in the form of industry publications, tradeshows and forums can help you penetrate a new market with an existing solution that may be very relevant. If you’re an ISV building a solution for a vertical market, you will likely be expanding your channel to embrace partners outside of your current focus area. Learn about your competitors: Microsoft partners are not your only competition. You also need to look at AWS partners, IBM, SAP, app marketplaces, as well as other global and industry partners and ISVs. Understanding what other competitors are doing can generate ideas on where you may be able to innovate. In some instances, you may want to partner with an app provider to round out your existing solution(s) and then build content and collateral around your newly enhanced solution. Expand geographically: Unless you’re in a very large city, geographic expansion goes hand-in-hand with a vertical strategy. You may consider expanding to other states or to other countries, being sensitive to the localization of your marketing materials. Validate your grammar (British English vs. American English), images and demographics. Look at other in-country solutions to get an idea of where to start. At TPMG, we have found that partners with a vertical specialty are 200x more successful than partners who are more horizontal. Vertical marketing results in much higher response rates and more qualified leads.

5. Content

If there’s one MUST EVOLVE RIGHT NOW in your marketing strategy, it’s content development. And not just any old content—the most important thing driving the need for evolution is the quality of content being created. In a LinkedIn survey, 55% of decision makers used thought leadership to vet organizations they are considering working with. However, only 18% of the thought leadership content they received was VERY GOOD or EXCELLENT. That’s a huge opportunity for you but you’ve got to be willing to invest in original, educational, engaging content. It might require a shift in how you currently create and share your thought leadership. How can you take your content to the next level? • Create content clusters. Instead of creating a single piece (like an eBook), create a whole set of content around a central theme that goes deeper into the topic. Look at what content decision makers and prospects may need at the various stages of the sales cycle. An eBook on Wholesale Distribution Technology Trends is great for awareness, but what about the prospect who already knows what he or she needs and is looking deeper into how it might work? Maybe that eBook has a trend that talks about ways distributors can get their goods to market faster. An article or video that dives deeper into that topic could be an ideal piece to add to your content cluster. A case study of a customer who implemented your solution and decreased their time to market is ideal for adding credibility and convincing a prospect in the bottom of the funnel to work with you.

• Provide TRUE thought leadership. The very best content is original. Surveys that can offer original research are one of the strongest lead magnets you can create. Not everyone can do an annual survey and report, but you still need to bring your unique knowledge into any content you create. You want to showcase your expertise with a solution, or in a specific vertical market, by sharing real challenges and what you did to resolve them. • Tell Stories. Have a specific goal to get more customer stories into your marketing. Be creative with your stories! Use strong visuals, highlight powerful quotes, create short video stories or think outside the box and create customer stories in highly effective infographic formats. Once you have your pieces created, use them everywhere. Don’t hide your case studies on one page of your website. Share them in your social media posts, throughout your site pages, and ALL your marketing touches (including emails). The Best Of Times Microsoft ISVs enjoy great benefits that few other publishers provide. For example: • The Microsoft brand and reputation makes selling a lot easier • The Microsoft worldwide marketplace is large, with an estimated 300,000 installations of Dynamics ERP products globally. • Microsoft encourages ISVs to develop point solutions and industry extensions and is transforming Business Central into the world’s leading ERP development platform. Now let’s look at “the worst of times,” and how we can make the most of them. Challenge One: “Change Or Be Left Behind” Microsoft makes incredible, long-term strategic decisions. These decisions often cause disruptions to partners who are sometimes shocked by announcements that seem to negatively affect their businesses. It’s obvious that Microsoft’s main focus is on the next star ahead, whether that star be a new market, a new technology, or a new business model. Now, with subscription licenses, not only do partners make less money up front but there’s no guarantee that customers will renew when their subscriptions expire. Under the SaaS model it generally takes at least three years to earn accumulated recurring revenues to match a perpetual license sale.


Counterstrategy: Service And Sales Of ISV Solutions While software revenues are collected over many years, ERP customers still need expert assistance to implement and support Business Central. In addition, while software margins are lower for the base Microsoft’s Business Central offering, higher margins are possible by selling ISV solutions because of their substantial added value and higher selling prices. Here’s where the smart Microsoft partner comes in. It may feel like lost money up front, but by working smarter, there are many more gains in the long run. Software updates and upgrades are free and maintenance fees are eliminated, but you provide expert service with support, training, and upsell software licenses. Good partners have always been the customer’s trusted advisor. Challenge Three: Market Demands Distrupt Your Plans A partner today may be comfortably selling perpetual licenses along with servers or other hardware when suddenly, one, two, then 10 or more prospects say, “but what about the cloud?” or “we want Business Central”. Market demands can leave you scrambling. Counterstrategy: Retool And Charge Ahead The agility of Partner businesses cannot be overemphasized as a critical success factor. But partners also need to embrace the new Microsoft platforms. Prepare to respond to customer requests for the newest solutions Microsoft sets as market expectations. Marketing, sales, and implementation methodologies need to be redesigned to fit market expectations. Today’s market expectation starts with the Microsoft Cloud. The cloud helps prospects and customers sleep better at night knowing their volumes of data are stored safely and they have access to it any time they want. Updates are handled “in the cloud” so that their systems are up to date all the time without unanticipated upgrade fees. Implementation practices must embrace fixed fee and on-boarding options as well as traditional time and materials methodology. Be a smart partner. Adapt, adjust, evolve with the market. Be a change leader by using your knowledge of Microsoft road maps and by keeping your staff well trained. Adopt the latest platforms and Dynamics products to embrace the change. Be ready to take action: • ISVs should embrace the Ready To Go (RTG) program and get on the Microsoft AppSource with Business Central sooner rather than later. It’s hard work but will pay off over time. • Resellers need to also sell ISV solutions as they provide higher software margins and so increase business valuations by building higher recurring software revenues. • Update your skills not only on Dynamics 365, but also Office 365, CE, and the Power platform. Creating, Executing, and Measuring the Success of Your Lead Nurturing Strategy story by Chad Collett, Director of Marketing, Ledgeview Partners

L

ead Nurturing is one of the most effective methods to engage with new leads and prospects to create marketing qualified leads, yet it is one of the most underutilized tools by marketers today. Getting started with an automated campaign, drip marketing, lead nurturing… whatever we want to call it, is no easy task and requires planning, forethought, and the right technology to truly be an effective tactic. As marketers we love CRM technology – it provides us with an amazing amount of information about our customers, our leads, and our prospects. Information we can utilize to build our strategic plan and measure the success of our marketing efforts. But the cog that makes it all turn is a good marketing automation solution, integrated with our CRM (like Microsoft Dynamics 365). Our marketing automation solution will provide the tools we need to funnel new prospects into marketing qualified leads. From email marketing, landing pages, and forms, to web tracking, lead scoring, and yes, automated campaigns, a marketers best friend is their marketing automation solution. But how do we get started? Before we craft that first email and hit send there are several steps and best practices that we need to consider. It all starts with establishing our goals. We know that nurturing our leads is important and that it is effective (for others). By establishing goals from the start, this will help us measure the success of our lead nurturing strategy and program. It will provide us a benchmark to strive for and to base program improvements around. If lead nurturing is a new tactic, we may want to consider some of these goals or key performance indicators (KPIs) as our targets; delivery, open, and click rates, number of marketing qualified and sales qualified leads generated, lead to opportunity rate, and of course sales wins and new business gained. With these goals in mind, it’s time to get our emails started right? Not so fast. First we need to know who we are targeting. We want our content, our messages, and our calls-to-action to appeal to our specific buyer’s needs. We need to develop our buyer personas.

This may be one of the most overlooked tasks by organizations today. Marketers may feel they know who the target buyer is, but are they on the same page as sales? Has the profile changed since it was last done? Take the time to complete a simple exercise, together as a team, to develop or confirm each buyer persona. If the organization has multiple divisions, products, or service lines, the buyer profile may differ. What role or job title is the person we are targeting? What is their background or demographic? What are their goals, or the challenges that they face on a regular basis? What are their common objections? All these factors will play into the development of each buyer persona and is critical to ensure our messaging and content are on target. With the buyer profile(s) complete, segmenting our marketing lists and campaigns becomes a breeze. But

as you begin to engage with new potential customers we want to make sure we are able to track their interest in us (as well as our interest in them). We do this through lead scoring. Lead scoring is one of my favorite marketing tactics. As targeted buyers continually engage with us through both inbound and outbound marketing, it is thrilling to see those lead scores rise. Clicking on our emails, downloading our eBooks and case studies, registering and/or attending our webinars (live vs on-demand), and perusing our website and landing pages. It all adds up as they progress down the marketing funnel towards becoming a marketing qualified lead (MQL). Developing a lead scoring program is a separate animal all in itself so take the time to carefully craft a scoring system using both implicit (action/engagement based scoring) and explicit (demographic/relationship) models.

We have our goals, we’ve built our buyer personas, and we have established our lead scoring. Now it’s time to visit the library. Take stock in what content and assets that are in place to use in our automated campaigns. Just like we would inventory our products, do we have enough marketing assets for our nurture campaigns? Do we have the RIGHT assets that fit the buyer persona and our calls-to-action? Are the eBooks, videos, case studies, and data sheets current and still relevant? If we think in terms of our funnel, we want our content to match our buyer’s needs but also be used as a tool as we move them through the funnel. As we attract new leads and prospects, we can use blog posts, surveys, infographics and videos to move them to the middle of the funnel. As interest levels grow, utilize eBooks, check-lists, in-person events, both live and on-demand webinars, and ultimately provide demos, trial offers, and case studies as they push to the evaluation and consideration stage. Keep in mind creating content and assets doesn’t have to be a challenge. If we host one webinar, that can produce a flurry of assets! One 30 or 60 minute webinar can translate into an eBook, 4-5 small tips sheets, 2-3 infographics, several blog posts, and a month worth of social media posts. And think about how we can share each of these assets with our leads, prospects, and customers over time via email in our nurture campaign – all from just one webinar. With a full library of resources it’s time to build our automated lead nurture program but there are a few best practices we want to consider. Test, test, and then test again. With marketing automation, marketers should utilize A/B testing with subject lines, body of emails (including graphics), and calls-toaction to see which is the most effective and resonates with our audience as the progress through the buyers journey. Determine the email send cadence and timing of each message. What the optimal day of the week and 28 | The Partner Channel Magazine

time? Don’t forget to consider the time zone of the target buyer! Is it different than where we are located? Determine how long to wait in between messages. We don’t want to bombard new leads with a message every single day. How long does it take them to process, and engage our information and/or share it with others? And finally consider what happens when the nurture runs its course. Did the lead or prospect engage with us on some level? Not at all? Do we disqualify them or shift them

to another marketing list and a new nurture? All considerations we need to take into account in developing the journey. Finally, measure the results against the goals established. Learn from failures (and yes, there will be failures) and built off successes. All these steps and best practices can help create an automated nurture campaign that can make even the smallest of marketing teams achieve amazing results.
