I am fortunate and grateful to be a part of this community and honored to be the new chairperson of the board. I hope to connect with many of you during this Octoberâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s User Group Summit in Orlando. The Summit events will kick off on October 13th and run through October 18th. There will be plenty of opportunities for you, Microsoft Dynamics GP Users, to come together and network, collaborate, share ideas and learn more about your existing Dynamics GP platform and future releases. The Dynamic Communities User Group Summit also provides an excellent venue for you to expand on other tools and products that can enhance your Dynamics GP experience; from ISV & Partner channels to other Microsoft products like D365, D365 BC, Power BI, PowerApps, etc. In the summer of 2019, GPUG events expanded to South Africa and Australia. Thriving in a Growing Community

hat a year 2019 has been, both for the GPUG community and me personally. Our work to continue thriving in a growing community has been tiring, yet equally rewarding. I’ve put more miles on an airplane recently than I can count but have seen some wonderful parts of the world – many of which have the same level of endearment for Dynamics GP as I do. To recap, GPUG was born in March 2007 when our founder, Andy Hafer, launched it at Microsoft Convergence in San Diego. Over the course of the next decade, GPUG grew nicely in North America and amassed over 30,000 individual members. It was slow going at first but after a while, we began garnering traction and the related growth we knew would eventually come. In 2018, we took over a Dynamics GP event from our friends at Braintree in Johannesburg, and while the event has changed names and is now a User Group World Tour stop, educational content around Dynamics GP remains at its core. A family commitment prevented me from visiting South Africa last year, but my trip to Johannesburg this past June was beyond memorable. I am anxious to begin planning for next year’s return trip, needless to say, and our hosts were so gracious, too! This year, Dynamic Communities decided to hold a Summit event Down Under in Melbourne, and GPUG presented educational content in Australia for the very first time in our history. It, too, was a wonderful event and several subject matter experts from the USA were there to complement our outstanding Australian speakers. We have more work to do so we can grow this event in the future, but our first pass at this new market was quite good and I am optimistic about future Australia Summit events in this unique part of the world. Australia is as fabulous as David Musgrave has been telling us all these years, mates! No, our developer is not adding new functionality as quickly as we’d like, and GPUG Amplify as well as our participation in Collaborate Canada have both ceased, but the trade-off to continue expanding GPUG’s global reach has been very good for the community as a whole. More end users of Dynamics GP, on three continents now, are experiencing our collaborative events and expanding this community around Dynamics GP. We are thriving even more than before as we grow this wonderful community, and I will diligently continue to reach out as best I can with my hard-working teammates to maintain this gathering momentum. Soon Microsoft Dynamics GP users from across the continent will converge for User Group Summit North America, October 15-18 in Orlando, Florida. Jason Zonts, business applications manager for Orlando-based OneBlood Inc., spoke with MSDW about the upcoming event, his organization’s use of Microsoft Dynamics GP, and his role leading the Orlando chapter of GPUG.

There’s no place like home Zonts is particularly excited that this year’s Summit event will take place right up the road on “home turf” in Orlando for his organization, a nonprofit that provides blood to over 200 hospitals.

It’s local and we know the whole area. We are the host chapter and we’ll be putting out blogs on how to maximize your time here in Orlando. And a lot of us got together and figured out, ‘Here are the things we wish you would have known going to a Summit.’ The 2019 event marks his fifth Summit and it will be the first at which he plans to deliver a session.

I’m actually teaching versus just learning and that’s exciting. Running a chapter or co-hosting a chapter has kind of spotlighted some of the needs that we have as end users. In the past, I sat there and absorbed all this information [at past Summits], and now I felt that I needed to give back.

Offering a session

GP & CRM: Better together

Zonts also gave back by participating in one of the subcommittees that helped decide the direction of the “New to GP” and “Upgrades” tracks. Zonts and other subcommittee members reviewed the submissions GPUG received for those tracks to determine which would best serve the end-user base.

At Summit, Zonts will be co-presenting a session on the integration between Dynamics GP and Dynamics CRM and how they work together to provide better information across the organization.

We had to make sure that we selected the content that [fit] what the users expected to get from sessions. For example, in the New to GP track, [examples of the topics include] How do I use GP? How do I do accounts payable and accounts receivable in GP? [How would] a clerk want to use GP to begin with? How does a CFO who’s new to GP looks at GP? Zonts is well-qualified to help other users become acquainted with the application because he’s been using it since version 9 or 10 – back when there wasn’t as much end-user support.

At that time, I was the head of the IT department at a small brokerage firm that had migrated from QuickBooks to GP and this fell under my purview. At that point it was myself and the accountant we brought in to help us migrate. That’s how I learned GP and accounting as well. I’m on the technical side now, so I’m in IT. But I’ve done this for long enough to know that you have to understand accounting to support the user base. My team and I handle all of our upgrades and dayto-day support. We also function as business and systems analysts to determine best practices, best uses, and to solve problems. And we bring in all of the ISVs that we need to accomplish the particular goals for the accounting department.

We’re looking at how you can utilize CRM and GP together, whether it’s allowing people to see things in CRM, such as accounts [and] price lists or creating new vendors or customers in CRM and having that information passed directly through to GP. Basically, how you can solve some of your sales problems by using GP and CRM together. So it won’t be, ‘Here’s how you configure GP and how you configure your CRM.’ It’s, ‘Here’s how you work through a business process and how using the two of these together make it easier.’ Zonts is also participating on a panel that will be offering best practices for upgrading Dynamics GP. Whereas OneBlood is a smaller organization, other panelists will come from larger teams, including a publicly traded company.

That session will focus on those who want to get better information on upgrading GP. A lot of my experience has been in smaller companies and where we don’t have some of the resources that a larger company has. I’m kind of the smaller company side – how to handle certain issues and our best practices as a small company. It’s really a back and forth on what the audience would like answers to, and how we, having experienced the upgrades, can help them. He added:

I’m looking forward to Summit just to find out where all this is going in the future. I think this is going to be pretty exciting.

Building a Microsoft Dynamics GP Manufacturing Program by

ALEIHA HANSON Attendees at October’s Microsoft Dynamics GP event at Summit North America will have the opportunity to connect with individuals who know and use the product the way that they do. One of those experts, Aleiha Hanson, IT manager at Royal Basket Trucks, spoke with MSDW about her involvement in the event, including the sessions she’ll

be presenting.

Sessions to benefit users Hanson was on the planning committee for two of the Dynamics GP tracks: Manufacturing and industry, which encompass inventory and purchasing, among other topics in which she is heavily involved in her role. That practical perspective informs the committee’s work.

When we review the content, we look at whether it is something that will help users day to day. Is it something that’s a pain point for many of us users who could really benefit from having somebody show us more detail, or show us how to perform an [action], such as how to get better reporting.

A Dynamics GP user for six years, Hanson is the “inhouse go-to” expert at her firm for all things GP from the financial side all the way through to manufacturing as well as reporting. And she is involved in ongoing enhancements.

When we switched off an Access 97-based ERP, I led our implementation. I also lead any process improvement projects that we do – right now we’re in the process of adding on bar coding to our GP interface. We do some EDI integrations and we’re working on implementing MRP, things like that. So I’m really heavily involved every single day with all of the modules in GP.

A fun, interactive panel discussion Hanson will be presenting three sessions at GPUG Summit, two in the industry track and one in manufacturing. One of the sessions in the industry track is entitled “Sales Order Processing (SOP) – It Can Do That?!!” This session covers some of the not so obvious features in the SOP module, such as process holds, drop shipping, allocation and fulfillment settings, shortage options, extended pricing, and user defined fields.

A lot of times people just think that your sales module is: enter an order, receive money from your customer. But it’s really more than that, and all the different slight modifications that are out of the box in GP that can make life easier. Things like different reports to use and utilizing user defined fields…certainly make those day-to-day processes much easier and give you better information. I’ll be presenting this session with Carol Kossoris, my representative at my GP partner, Heartland Business Systems.

I and three others went through all of the submissions for the manufacturing and industry tracks and selected which ones – and in which order – we felt that users would most benefit from seeing. So at the beginning of Summit, [we’ll have] some of the more entry-level kinds of sessions, and then build up to the more advanced. H2 2019 | 15

Hanson will also be presenting the industry track session “Understanding & Organizing Inventory: Features and Tips to Take Control Over Your Inventory,” where users will get an understanding of how allocations work and what affects their inventory quantities. They will also get an overview of the tools that are available in GP, such as inventory reconcile, item resource planning, inventory views, and traceability for serials and lots. Additionally, attendees will learn about some best practices to achieve successful inventory control. In the manufacturing track, Hanson will be presenting “Experts & Users Share All,” a panel discussion, that will explore all things manufacturing.

We’re going to cover some of the basics, such as what works well in a manufacturing environment and how you can tweak GP’s manufacturing. And we’re also going to share tips and tricks and share our experiences. The audience will also be able to ask questions. It will be an interactive session, so it’s kind of fun.

Learning what you don’t know As for her Summit experience, Hanson says she’s looking forward to interacting with GP experts from around the world. This will be my fourth Summit, and my second one presenting, and what I really love seeing is how it continues to grow and how the user group is trying to provide as much content as possible to all the users. I also love being able to interact with some of the experts, especially the international ones, [for instance, having a conversation with Dave Musgrave]…and just getting all of this information. It’s also kind of nice to be able to learn what you don’t know and then grow from that. And even going to the trade show at Summit, walking up and down the aisles and [realizing], ‘Oh, there’s an add-on for that?’ It’s nice to just be able to see everything all in one place. Even if you only learn two things, those two things could make your life so much easier every day.

Learning from other GP users is a big plus by

BRYAN ROBERTSON

One of the focus areas at October’s GPUG event at Summit North America centers around Microsoft Dynamics GP upgrades. Bryan Robertson, Director of ERP Operations at SBA Communications Corp. is one of the experts who will be presenting a session in the upgrade track. He spoke with MSDW about his involvement in GPUG Summit.

It all begins with planning Robertson is a GPUG Chapter Leader for South Florida. He also sits on the group’s Board of Advisors and the Summit planning committee and a recipient of the GPUG All*Star Award from Summit 2018 in Phoenix. At Summit 2019, Robertson has helped select session for the upgrade track. He will also be presenting.

I was on the planning committee responsible for reviewing the proposed presentations end users, partners, and consultants submitted for the upgrade track and helped select the topics being presented. I am also kind of a central point for many of the questions coming from the Summit website. I tend to get various emails from users with different questions regarding what the best hotels are. I am also working on the first-time attendee’s reception. For the most part, I help wherever I can to ensure Summit is the best conference experience for attendees.

[They were] a small ISV and they had an add-on product for Dynamics GP that integrated the order management system with GP. I started learning GP at that point to support customers. Then I went to GP boot camp and started dabbling in a little bit of sales, implementations, and training. I have been working at SBA going on 12 years. SBA operates across North, Central and South America and we have a large, very complicated GP environment. I am the Director of ERP Operations and we support 165 users across all GP environments – so much more than just Dynamics GP. I oversee all of our enterprise resource planning systems, so our Dynamics GP, Microsoft CRM, our SharePoint – most applications within Office 365 with exception to Outlook. We deal a lot with Microsoft Flow, and PowerApps, the assortment of Office 365 applications, and Power BI. We also have multiple content management systems and probably 20 or 25 homegrown applications we have built outside of GP, which feed data into GP. As well as 35 to 40 other applications, we support whether they push data into GP or just simply for the Accounting department. So, anything as it relates to Accounting or any resource planning system kind of falls under my area GPUG Summit.

Planning for an upgrade At Summit, Robertson will be presenting the session “Planning for Your Upgrade in a Public Company”.

I am going to review everything from your project charter, project approval, project sign offs – [things] associated with the project in general. [At SBA], we do sign off internally with IT as far as with our database team, our application development team, and we have a sign off from the end users who are performing the user acceptance testing. We have all of our documentation, checklists, project plan, communication all stored in SharePoint. Obviously, over the years, I have learned; it is better over communicating than under communicating…With our upgrades, we have to test all our homegrown applications, all of our integrations, and functional aspects of GP. The whole presentation will talk about the different areas to test and things needing to happen in a public environment. For example, what is internal audit looking for, what are the external auditors looking for, things of that nature.

Always something to learn This year, as in years past, Robertson is looking forward to talking to and learning from other GPUG Summit attendees.

Every year my expectations are the same for learning. Previously, when Microsoft still had Convergence, which was kind of like Christmas time for me. We wanted to go and hear all the new things coming from Microsoft. You had to hit the expo, going around talking with all the different ISVs, which was key to the trip. We always went with a small laundry list of our existing and upcoming projects, and wanted to find solutions or find products and software, that could make our lives easier. It was always a kid-in-atoy-store kind of mentality. Convergence died off, and Summit has grown to encompass the old thought process of the expo, coupled with the user real-life problems. GP covers a large, large market, and there are always users with commonly experienced problems and usually open to discuss. It is nice to come together with the user community. Even sitting down at lunch, you can strike up a conversation [with other attendees]. I probably learn more just from the networking opportunity than in some of the classes. It is always enlightening. I love the collaboration with other users. That is always a plus.

ne year and two days after nearly drowning in a friend’s swimming pool, Taylor Dorward hosted a 5K race event for charity near Columbia, SC to thank and raise funding for those who saved his life. GPUG was a proud Corporate Sponsor of this event, yours truly did indeed finished the race, and the upbeat feeling of being there in person, surrounded by so many well-wishers, was the part I will remember most about this fun, unique excursion. Taylor is a truly inspirational individual, so let me share with you how! If you don’t know Taylor, he is the son of Shawn & Jennifer Dorward. Shawn, Dynamics GP Practice Lead at InterDyn Artis in Charlotte, has been part of the GPUG family as a regular contributor for many years. He is a Business Solutions MVP and was awarded a GPUG All*Star in 2014 during our annual flagship event in St. Louis. Shawn’s relentless dedication to the Dynamics GP community was the primary reason GPUG sponsored this inaugural event. In my mind, the decision to do so a true no-brainer. The weather was quite humid that first Saturday in July, but the rain held off for us the entire time. Registration opened at 730am and many people – runners, volunteers, friends, and lots of family – milled around waiting for the opening ceremonies at 845am as the race was to begin at 9am. Shawn found a microphone, just as he always does at GPUG events, and kicked things off. This Opening Ceremony, however, was unlike anything I’d ever witnessed before.

Shawn started by introducing the first responders who revived Taylor and saved his life that tragic day. It was appropriate and it was emotional, particularly since each one of these young men was under the age of 25. These guys were real-life heroes and I had the pleasure of meeting them, via Shawn’s introduction, at the outset of the event. Other important people in Taylor’s recovery, and there were many, were also introduced, and then the man himself was asked to come forward and say a few words. This grand entrance took a few minutes as he hugged all of those who’d been introduced already with a genuineness you could clearly see. Then he hugged his family members tightly, one at a time. When I say there wasn’t a dry eye in the house, I’m not kidding. Taylor made a brief speech, tears rolling down his cheeks at times, and thanked everyone for being there to support his efforts to give back. It was an impressive moment for this impressive young man. After all that, we made our way a short distance to the starting line. One minute I’m taking this emotional roller coaster ride with Shawn and his family, and the next thing I know someone is yelling ‘go’ and we’re off! While I am in reasonably good shape, I’m hardly a runner or jogger (does regular elliptical machine usage count?), so I wasn’t as ready as I should have been for this race. I did complete the 3.11 miles in 36:29, however, and was pleased that I did. A combination of running and walking got me over the finish line, needless to say. Taylor began the race 30 minutes after everyone else did, and with the assistance of his first responder friends. His vision is still not back completely (he is no longer legally blind, however), so one of the paramedics raced with him and ‘chirped’ as they ran so he would avoid any objects or pitfalls on the pathway. Since he left much later than everyone else, we were all there – literally - to cheer him on as he crossed the finish line. The cheering was quite boisterous, and hearing it reach a crescendo as Taylor officially completed the race named in his honor was beyond remarkable. He was tired and winded, but he had met the challenge – PENNY!!! As an event sponsor, Shawn asked me to help pass out medals for the various age groups, which was quite enjoyable. Once the award ceremony was finished, there was some quick pickup to be done and pictures were taken with Taylor at the finish line. A final goodbye to Shawn and Jennifer, and that was it. The inaugural ‘Pennies for Taylor 5K Race’ was history, but the memories

and inspirational moments are still fresh in my mind and are likely to remain there, too. Taylor’s comeback story is a wonderful one and watching this young man and his family overcome huge obstacles to host such a great event only a year later was beyond amazing. If you see Shawn and Taylor in Orlando this October at the 13th annual GPUG Summit, stop and wish them well with a handshake or hug. Expanded Learning in South Africa story by Pieter Cornelius Strategic Head: Product Development, Braintree

he Johannesburg stop of the 2019 User Group World Tour from 10 to 14 June with Wednesday 12 June and Thursday 13 June as the focus days, was the third year of Dynamics GP events in South Africa and the second year under the auspices of Dynamics Communities. It started in 2017 with Reignite GP and in 2018 with GPUG Amplify. The focus of the previous two conferences was on Dynamics GP only, but this year NAV and BC were included as well as more tracks around Office365 including PowerBI and PowerApps. End users, consultants, Microsoft staff members, and other subject matter experts presented the 80 plus sessions sharing their knowledge with around 175 attendees from all over Africa. Various Academy sessions resulted in positive feedback from attendees: presented by Craig Crescas, Microsoft Partner Technology Strategies, David Musgrave MVP (his third year attending the conference From Down Under), Bob McAdam from GPUG, and Arend-Jan Kauffmann, BC Technical Consultant and Trainer. A word of thanks to our sponsors and the entire Dynamics Community team - and to our special friends Angie Ryan and Bob McAdam for spending hours on flights from the USA to sunny South Africa to ensure that the event was once again a huge success. he inaugural “Summit Australia” officially launched Wednesday, August 23, 2019, in the modern, thriving, cosmopolitan city of Melbourne, Victoria. It continued for 3 eventful days through August 25th, packed full of vital information. GPUG, in conjunction with the other Dynamics communities, brought what I feel is the best User Group Conference - “Summit” to this wonderful country. As a seasoned GPUG and Microsoft Convergence Presenter and Attendee, I have to say the organization of the event and the talent presented was world class. Taking advantage of the long trek in a row boat across the Pacific, and prior to attending Summit Australia, my wife and I added a 3-week personal Australian adventure to our visit. Deciding what to see and how to get around, well it was a big challenge. My wife solicited advice from Dave Musgrave’s wife Jennifer, Fodor’s, multiple online resources, other books, and anyone else in our orbit who had ever come to this great continent. In the end, we decided that we wanted to really see the land in all its variety, and experience the true culture of Australia. So we rented an SUV in Sydney, and drove around a large portion of the country covering about 9,985 kms (6,204 mi) in all. Well, we saw about half the country anyway. It’s huge! Our adventure began in Sydney, where I had the privilege of driving on the left side of the road for the first time, after a 15 hour plane flight, in morning rush hour traffic! Fortunately, after a few turns around the round-about, I adjusted faster than anticipated. We went directly northwest to the Blue Mountains, and Katoomba, where the Three Sisters sit vigil over the Jamison Valley (twice the size of the Grand Canyon). It was our first introduction to flocks of Sulphur Crested Cockatoos flying free and squawking in the Eucalyptus Forest. Traveling northeast over the “Great Inland Way”, we wound our way through smaller, less traveled towns, taking in the beautiful mountains, forests, grasslands and rivers. There was a slight delay while the local cowboys drove a cattle herd down the middle of the highway in no particular hurry. Arriving

at the Pacific Ocean in Cairns, we turned northward parallel to the Great Barrier Reef, over twisting narrow, single lane, cliff hugging roads to Port Douglas, finally up to the Daintree Rainforest, the oldest continuously growing rainforest on earth and an extremely interesting experience. We motored southward, back along the beaches of the eastern coast into Townsville, then turned due west through the semi-arid regions of the Outback, to the amazing Red Center and Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) and Kata Tjuta . One highlight was an open-air dining experience on top of a remote sand dune, overlooking Uluru at sunset. Skillful playing of a didjeridoo greeted our arrival, followed by a 7-course gourmet dinner, utilizing local wines and ingredients like kangaroo, emu, sandalwood nuts, Davidson plum, lemon myrtle, desert oak and quandong. Driving southward through the Red Center, on our way to Adelaide, we stopped at an opal mining town called Coober Pedy and slept in an old opal mine. Yes, rocks walls and all - do we want to say the Flintstones? Leaving the semi-arid red lands, we arrived in Adelaide and enjoyed the refreshing ocean for a few days. Driving eastward, we traveled over the majestic “Great Ocean Road”, taking in all the glorious cliffs and ocean views, and briefly toe-tested the “chilly” Antarctic (Southern) Ocean. On our way to Melbourne, we paused to feast on locally produced, yummy award-winning wines, cheeses and chocolates. After Summit, we drove down to Phillip Island to watch the tiny fairy penguins fight the surf as they returned from the ocean, and march to their dens. Lastly, we came over the Australian Alps, taking in breathtaking scenery, returned to Sydney, and flew home after 30 fantastic days.

We enjoyed exposure to vividly colored birds and unfamiliar animals such as galah parrots (pink), rainbow lorikeets, cassowaries, frogmouths, albatross, penguins, emus, kangaroos, wallabies, wombats, crocodiles, and my personal favorite Tia the koala bear - I wanted to take her home. Cattle and sheep with baby lambs carpeted the the pastures. Plant life is also very different, including the 35 meter (115ft) tall Bunya Pine, the compelling white wood of the “Ghost Gum”, one of the 200 varieties of eucalyptus trees, and the yellow blossomed Acacia tree. We learned about the “Dreaming”, the diverse, 50,000 year old Aboriginal Culture, and enjoyed local music (didjeridoo) and artwork (dot painting). There were notable novel edible experiences. First Australians take their coffee very seriously. No simple coffee with cream and sugar. Nope, in all our travels not a single restaurant, roadhouse or gas station any where had a pot of coffee brewing. They all possessed elaborate cappuccino machines, even the small roadside petrol stations. Do you like coffee with cream? Well, that is a “flat white” (made with whole milk, no cream). Want a bowl of soup with your meal? The soup is a meal (in a gigantic bowl for four people)! Meat pies, chicken parmigiana (a new way), kangaroo, emu, barramundi, fresh chocolate, Australian wines, yum. Vegemite, well… And everyone needs to do the Tim Tam Slam! (Look it up) Local slang adds color to conversations such as : ta (thanks), mate, cheers (what does that mean? it’s used for everything), esky (insulated cooler), servo (gas station), petrol, toilette (vs bathroom), ute (utility vehicle or pickup truck), fair go (give someone an equal chance) and of course no worries. The language reflected the people we met, who were impressively courteous and good-natured; ready to share a good time or conversation. 34 | GPUG Magazine

Australia is an outstanding place for a conference, especially if you take advantage of the destination as we did. So, back to focusing on “Summit Australia”, the main reason for being here. Overall, the inaugural Summit Australia successfully generated the same intimate atmosphere and heightened level of anticipation experienced at the first Great Plains Convergence back in 1997 and the first GPUG Summit in Redmond. Summit Australia was the first official Summit conference for many of the attendees, and their enthusiasm and excitement was tangible. As with all first time events, attendance can be improved upon, but the intimacy and easy exchange of information made it more special for both the attendees and presenters. All the GPUG attendees were able to have one on one contact with the likes of David Musgrave, Steve Endow, Tanya Henderson, Bob McAdam, Kerry Hataley (myself), Chris Hansen, Andrew Dean, and even Shawn Dorward and Amber Bell who presented remotely. It is a rare opportunity these days to be able to sit and talk all things Dynamics GP and SQL/SSRS with attendees on a personal level, and it felt great. The event venue at The Melbourne Crown Promenade was excellent; well laid out, well lit, fully functioning equipment, comfortable chairs and tables, and a comfortable exceptionally clean environment. I need to specifically point out the conscientiousness, consideration and attentiveness of the staff, from electronics technicians to waitstaff. Actually, we noticed, Australians overall were so polite, kind and positive. Melbourne, a city with a population of 4.75 million people, larger than Los Angelas, in the USA, only New York is larger, but the people made you feel like you were in small town Saskatchewan or Oklahoma (Hi Windi). Tuesday, August 22 was the first day for the partners, with salient information provided by Microsoft Australia and breakout sessions specifically relevant for the partners. In all, there were 21 world class presentations delivered August 23 to 25th. Speakers came well prepared and didn’t let the smaller attendance affect their enthusiasm. There was good exchange between attendees and speakers, and attendees were able to obtain individualized clarifications and answers on various topics. I would like to specifically mention the GPUG partners who attended, for being present and participating as speakers: eOne also a premier sponsor, Winthrop, and Envisage.

In the final breakout session, we all gathered together in one room for an open Q&A session lead by Bob McAdam - well kind of. Aside from the normal concerns - what is happening with Dynamics GP and Microsoft? - attendees were able to discuss issues related specifically to Australia. For me, this was eye opening. Having always been in the North American market, both American and Canadian, I did not give much thought to problems affecting other countries. Tax and Payroll were the two big areas which present very different issues for Australians. I also discovered Australia is somewhat more limited in their variety of readily accessible talent in some areas, such as my specialty, the SQL realm. Another obstacle is the World Clock and Australia’s time zones. Melbourne is 14 hours ahead of New York, which makes “support during business days and hours” tricky, depending on where the customer is located in relation to the supplier.

This is an added complication for Australians when venturing out into the world market, as I am sure it is for many other parts of the world (Europe and Africa). After conversations with several attendees, we found they were largely uninformed about the variety of content presented at the other Summits. There seemed to be a general lack of dissemination of information from their partners about the Summit events in general, even this event held in Australia. Further discussions identified additional concerns about prohibitive cost restrictions, wondering if they would ever be allowed to attend anything outside Australia. Community drives GPUG, and it shows. The inaugural Summit Australia attendees came to learn from one other, both customers and partners. This is the essence of what the GPUG community is all about. Yes, we are all here to do our jobs and run a business. We are not required to share our knowledge and lend a helping hand when needed, yet we do, and that is a great thing! These are the forums where problems are solved, ideas are generated, and new paths are begun. Community is the lifeblood of ingenuity - GPUG. Finally, I recommend setting aside time at all events, to get to know not only other gpuggers, but also the local people - talking to each other while at the conferences breakfast, lunch, sessions or during the many evening “Advanced Networking Opportunities”. And if you have the opportunity, explore the area and learn the local culture like my wife and I did when we arrived in Australia, now an unforgettable “bucket list” adventure. You may find yourself enriched as an individual, which can only serve to grow the GPUG community both locally and around the world. Share hurdles, share ideas, find solutions! “Originating” fields in Account Transactions SmartLists Have you ever wanted to pull some subledger information into a GL Transaction report? There are a bunch of “Originating ____” fields found under the Account Transactions SmartList (under Financial) and in certain circumstances, you will be able to extract *some* of that information from your G/L to supplement your account analysis. Here are some of the fields and what they may contain.

Originating Company ID

For intercompany transactions

Originating Debit & Credit

When using multi-currency, these are going to be the transaction debits and credits in the original currency of the transaction. In comparison, the regular “Debit” and “Credit” fields will always be the functional currency amounts.

Originating Source

This is usually the original Batch Number if Posting Setup is set to Post Thru.

Originating Posted Date

This is “the date on which the original transaction was posted”, as in the system date.

Originating TRX Source

This is the Audit Trail code for the original batch from the originating transaction.

Originating Control Number

This can be the original doc number but not always, especially when the original module has both a doc number field and a sequential transaction number (like PM trx voucher numbers).

Originating Document Number In comparison to the above field, Originating Control Number, this field is pretty consistently the actual original Doc Number. • In Bank, it’s the receipt number, cheque number, or transfer number. • In RM and SOP, it’s the document number. • In POP, it’s the receipt number. • In PM, it’s the document number (or cheque number). • In IV, it’s the transaction number. Originating Master ID & Name

For most modules this is the ID and Name from the transaction, i.e. Customer or Vendor ID/Name. For Bank module, the ID is the chequebook and the Name is the name on the transaction (i.e. Paid to/Received from). On Bank Transfers, interestingly enough, the ID is “Transfer From:” and the chequebook and the Name is “Transfer To:” and the chequebook.
