Celebration of Making
The intention of the programmatic organization was to offer a generous space for public interaction while also providing a sensitive integration of the works of art. The Museum also offers Ceramics making Courses to the public, specifically to single mothers and their children. The kiln room, where the courses are taught, is located in the primary horizontal mass that is elevated above the entry and central gathering space. The kilns are located in a transparent volume that is revealed on the east side of the concrete mass. The Galleries are located on the southeast side of the site, where the surrounding context resembles an infill condition.

The Gallery
In addition to the permanent collection of ceramics that the gallery keeps on display, seven other works were specifically integrated into the architecture. Two of those pieces are shown here. The first piece, created by El Anatsui, occupies the far east wall and rests directly below a vertical opening that allows diffused light to reflect off the parallel concrete wall. The second piece, by Cornelia Parker, is placed on the interior of the second level, in a space with no natural light, to allow the sculptures interior lighting to express the “Exploded View onto the surrounding walls
