«Dignity» Above All Honor

Dignity, a value which is often neglected, has a significant impact on our daily lives. This sensitive concept of "selfmastery" is brutally violated when a person lacks the "choice" to control their fate, and without choice, dignity is lost. Few people today understand its full value, and even fewer appreciate its importance in our lives and relationships.

The concept of dignity is illuminated by Kant's work, who argued that a person does not have a price but worth— dignity. Anything with a price can be replaced by something of equal value. However, anything you cannot put a price on has no equal, and that is dignity.

Dignity is inextricably linked to self-esteem and overall quality of life. Recognizing our worth helps us appreciate ourselves and our relationships while being true to our ideals and obligations. A dignified person is consistent, honors their promises, and respects the demands of others while preserving their own freedom. Their actions are defined by kindness and integrity.

A dignified person avoids situations that degrade them, and even when hurt, they do not devalue themselves in hopeless circumstances.

Dignity cannot be reconciled with compromise, and it is a difficult, irreversible journey that confirms the value and love we deserve.

It is a silent promise not to compromise our "personal code of honor" for the sake of others. Despite its scarcity now, let us live with it, and it will never fail us.

Hollywood elegance with Chanel’s timeless tradition, in Los Angeles

Resort Collection / Summer 2024

"One night only" was the message of Chanel's billboards across the city. The Resort 2024 fashion show was held at Paramount Studios and was a cinematic extravaganza celebrating the House’s deep connections to Hollywood.

Coco Chanel first visited California nearly a century ago, around 1931. The story began in Monte Carlo in the summer of 1930 when, through Duke Dimitri Pavlovich, she met Samuel Goldwyn, owner of MGM Studios. Shortly thereafter, she arrived in Los Angeles, where she met Greta Garbo. She subsequently met Marlene Dietrich, with whom she became friends, Gloria Swanson, Erich von Stroheim, George Cukor, Claudette Colbert, and many other actors who were eager to meet her. Karl Lagerfeld continued this legacy, forging strong ties with actors and celebrities, establishing Chanel as a dominant presence on the red carpet.

«I intend to continue innovating and upgrading our services, amenities, and offerings to exceed customer expectations and set new standards of excellence in hospitality».

■ How did you decide to get involved in the hospitality industry?

I believe investing in a dynamic and rapidly evolving sector is the right choice. For me, the motivations are significant and the satisfaction immense in interacting with and creating unforgettable experiences for my guests.

■ What is your vision and how do you see your business growing in the future?

My vision is to create a strong Brand that guests trust and seek out for memorable and personalized stays, meals, and activities. This requires strategic development to consistently improve client experiences through personalized services, a compatible corporate culture, and new innovative solutions that meet and surpass the expectations we set. Adopting sophisticated technology such as mobile check-in, virtual concierge services, and smart room technologies, collaborating with other businesses to offer exclusive packages, ongoing employee training, and, most importantly, environmental sustainability—all of which attract an increasing number of visitors. Business expansion entails extending into new markets, both domestically and internationally, to reach a larger audience.

■ What is the most significant lesson you've learnt as a hospitality leader? One of the most significant lessons is the value of effective communication. Clear and open communication with my employees, guests, and other stakeholders is critical to the hotel's successful operation. Miscommunication can cause misunderstandings, mistakes, and frustration. Fostering a culture of open communication builds trust and loyalty among employees and customers.

■ What are the primary challenges you face as a female hotel CEO in Greece?

It is true that women in business encounter bias on a regular basis, and their leadership talents are usually underestimated in comparison to those of men. I believe that a woman's leadership presence in our industry is vital since women naturally possess the necessary "qualities". Personally, I’m aiming to create a discrimination-free workplace in which employees trust and recognize female leadership.

■ What philosophy guides the hospitality experience you provide to your guests?

Our concept revolves around creating a friendly and memorable environment in which our guests feel valued, respected, and cared for. We think that each guest is unique and deserves individual attention and care. We want to make real connections and cultivate long-term relationships via empathy, respect, and genuine warmth.

■ How do you balance your professional and personal life?

I set limits and schedule time for my personal activities. This reduces burnout and guarantees that I have time for my family, friends, hobbies, and relaxation. I also delegate tasks and encourage my staff to take on responsibilities, freeing up my time to focus on strategic decisions and high-priority tasks. Effective delegation not only lightens my workload, but also fosters the professional growth and development of my employees.

■ What inspires you every day, and how do you stay passionate about your work?

One of my biggest sources of inspiration is my guests and the potential to create meaningful experiences that have a positive impact on their lives. The excitement and satisfaction on their faces after an extraordinary stay at our hotel makes me happy and pushes me to keep striving for excellence. My team also serves as a source of inspiration. Working with devoted and skilled people who share my passion for hospitality energizes and excites me about what I do. Moreover, I am inspired by innovators and thought leaders who push me to think creatively, adapt to change, and continuously improve our offerings. To keep my enthusiasm for work, I make a conscious effort to remain curious, open-minded, and proactive in seeking out new challenges and opportunities for growth.

■ What are your next goals?

My next goal is to improve the guest experience at our hotel while also promoting long-term business growth. I intend to continue innovating and upgrading our services, amenities, and offerings to exceed customer expectations and set new standards of excellence in hospitality.

Siete Mares Suites becomes the premier luxury spa, offering the most unique products and treatments exclusive to Greece. Santorini is the first destination of Geneviv.

■ What motivated you to bring the "GENEVIV Clinic" to Greece?

In recent years, there has been a growing trend in the wellness and beauty industry, as we all recognize how important self-care is in an environment that creates stresses for both the body and mind. Through a beauty and wellness Clinic, we can boost people's confidence and improve their overall well-being. The joy of helping someone look and feel better is unparalleled. I would say that my passion for health and beauty, along with the desire to help others look and feel their best, are the main motivations behind the decision to open a wellness and beauty Clinic.

■ What services will your Clinic offer and how will they complement your hotel's existing services?

The Wellness and Beauty Clinic will offer a variety of services to help guests look and feel their best during their stay. These services will include massages, facial and body treatments, as well as nutritional counselling for a holistic therapeutic approach. Guests can easily book their appointments to enjoy a comprehensive relaxation and rejuvenation experience without needing to travel to external spa facilities. Our priority is to use high-quality products, employ specialized professionals, and offer personalized treatments to ensure that each guest has a unique and refreshing experience tailored to their individual needs and preferences.

Thank you, and we wish you the best of success!

2022. Following the death of his mother, the iconic Queen Elizabeth, the newly-minted King Charles III made his first public speech. Among other things, King Charles commented on the passing of his mother, announced that Prince William would become the new Prince of Wales, and expressed his love for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

t was November 14, 1948, when the clock at Buckingham Palace showed a quarter past nine. Queen Elizabeth gave birth to her firstborn son, Charles Philip Arthur George. The joyous event was accompanied by 41-gun salutes, while the two fountains in Trafalgar Square were lit blue. With the death of his grandfather, George VI, on February 6, 1952, Charles, at just three years old, became the heir to the British throne.

His first public appearance was at his mother's coronation at Westminster Abbey, and at the age of just nine, he was made Earl of Chester and Prince of Wales, becoming the longest-serving heir apparent with this title, even surpassing his great-great-great-grandfather Edward VII. At the age of twenty, the investiture was formally held in Wales, at Caernarvon Castle. He was the first member of the royal family to study History, Anthropology, and Archaeology at Cambridge, and he also attended a semester at the University of Wales, studying the history and language of the region whose title he held. He was trained in the Royal Air Force and at the Royal Naval College. From the age of 22, in 1970, he participated in the House of Lords, where he remained an active member until 1999, when the law changed. Knight of the Garter since 1969, Knight of the Bath since 1975, Charles acquired more and more titles.

The Prince’s Trust

A landmark year, however, was 1976 when he founded his organisation, The Prince’s Trust. The Foundation was created for aiding young people who are in financial need, to individuals who need help, such as ex-prisoners reintegrating into society, or young people who have a business plan but cannot invest on it by their own. The success of the Foundation is so great that since 2015, through the creation of The Prince’s Trust International, it operates internationally, expanding its aid.

Two Marriages

The most sought-after and elegant groom in the United Kingdom married Lady Diana Spencer at St. Paul's Cathedral on July 29, 1981, after a five-month engagement and a total of 13 meetings between the couple. The following year, William was born, and two years later, Harry. The clouds over the marriage appeared early and stayed, with obstacles resulting in its dissolution in 1996 due to both parties' lack of synchronization. Nine years later, his engagement to Camilla, a key figure in his life since 1970, was announced. They married on April 9, 2005. The Queen did not attend the wedding ceremony but participated in the blessing given at St. George's Chapel, Windsor. Charles continued his duties as Prince of Wales, increasingly substituting for his mother as she aged.

His Relationship with Greece

Within his existential quests, his grandmother, Princess Alice, mother of Philip, played a significant role by talking to him about Greece and introducing him to Orthodoxy. Through his travels to Patmos and especially to Mount Athos, and his interactions with the monks, he developed strong bonds. King Charles' relationship with Greece is deeply rooted in history and personal connections. His father, Prince Philip, was born in Greece, linking the British and Greek royal families. King Charles has often visited Greece, fostering diplomatic and cultural ties. His advocacy for environmental causes resonates with Greece's commitment to preserving its natural heritage. Charles' visits and engagements with Greek leaders have strengthened bilateral relations, enhancing socio-economic and cultural exchanges. When he came to Greece in 2021, as a guest for the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Greek War of Independence, he spoke at the official dinner about how Greece holds a special place in his heart, and concluded by saying in Greek, "Hail, oh hail, liberty! The Coronation

On September 10, 2022, two days after the death of his mother, he was proclaimed King by the Accession Council, with similar ceremonies held in Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, as well as in the 14 Commonwealth Realms and the Crown's overseas territories. His coronation took place on May 6, 2023. In his enthronement speech, King Charles III stated that he came to serve, not to be served. He declared that he would be not only the head of the Anglican Church but also a guarantor of all Faiths.

Health Issues

In late January 2024, he was admitted to the hospital due to prostate hyperplasia, and on February 5, it was announced that he had been diagnosed with cancer. The concurrent illness of his daughter-in-law, Kate, indicates that 2024 began with difficulties for the British royal family. Camilla's help is and remains significant. In his first public appearance after a long time, at the Easter service, he did not hide his joy. Charles is considered one of the most elegant and influential men in terms of fashion, following in the footsteps of his uncle, the Duke of Windsor. That day, his dark suit was complemented by a blue tie with a Greek motif, as on so many other occasions. One of the attendees wished the King a speedy recovery and to stay strong. Charles smiled and replied, "I will do my best." I think in that response, Charles summed up his entire life. "Get well soon, Your Majesty".

Papamanoli Anastasia

Fourteen years ago, businesswoman Anastasia Papamanoli, an Athenian with roots from Istanbul, met HRH Princess Katherine, who inspired her with her philanthropic efforts and contributions to Greece and Serbia. In the years that followed, she served on the Board of Directors, first as Treasurer and now as President. Her tale is strongly rooted in the ideals of giving, which she acquired from her forefathers, who suffered immensely and were forced to leave their city and possessions behind. We will learn more about the new President and the significant humanitarian work that Lifeline Hellas does in our country throughout our conversation.

much we can improve people's lives for the better by bringing together many people who wish to give, because at Lifeline Hellas, we are a great team with clear goals that translate into actions.

■ How did you decide to get involved in the field of Civil Society and humanitarian aid?

Helping our fellow humans in need has always been touching for me and has been an internal calling and a source of true satisfaction. Often, life brings us to positions and situations that our soul attracts in a magical way. That's how I feel about Lifeline Hellas, because it allowed me to give, in a more structured and effective manner, something I never missed a chance to do whenever and wherever I heard there was a real need. However, through Lifeline Hellas, I saw how

■ What is the mission and the main goals of Lifeline Hellas? Do you plan to change anything during your tenure and in which direction? First, I would like to thank Princess Katherine of Serbia and all the friends and members of Lifeline Hellas, for their trust in selecting and voting for me as the President. My obligation and commitment are to live up to their expectations, to continue the very important work of my predecessors, the two Presidents since the association was founded, and to contribute together with the Board to our country and to the children who are its future. We will operate with consistency, transparency, and seriousness to raise awareness among other organizations and fellow individuals so that they may help us achieve our goals and make a difference. Lifeline Hellas' purpose is to offer medical equipment to children's hospitals and institutions to improve medical care and quality of life for the children. Furthermore, we undertake actions to assist whenever and whenever a need arises.

their urgency, with children always being the top priority. We also stay up to date on current events and we work to meet urgent needs in other countries, such as providing heart surgeries for a child and a young woman from Ukraine, assisting earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria, assisting fire victims in Evia, assisting unaccompanied refugee children, and many other emergencies.

■ What do you consider to be the most significant achievement of the organization to date?

Lifeline Hellas' work in Greece over the last two decades has been extensive, encompassing a wide range of charitable activities. I believe we can not single out one achievement as the most important, but we will never forget the children who are alive today as a result of the surgeries provided by Lifeline Hellas, the expansion of the neonatal unit at the "Elena Venizelou" hospital, the donation of an ambulance to Messinia, the donations of ventilators and incubators for premature infants at the "Attikon" hospital and "Elena Venizelou," and much more.

■ What inspires and motivates you in your daily work as President of Lifeline Hellas? What is the most memorable incident or experience you have had during your term?

The example of Princess Katherine, who has tirelessly continued her 30year dedication to assisting those in need, has had a tremendous impact on the whole Lifeline Hellas team and encourages us to continue our humanitarian efforts. Furthermore, the profound emotional fulfillment you get when you give—which is both the underlying concept and the ultimate purpose of Lifeline Hellas—is genuinely unique! Scientific studies show that «giving» makes people happier, which is something we all share as a team. Personally, I consider myself extremely fortunate and grateful to have the opportunity to «give», and I believe it is our personal responsibility to do so whenever feasible. Each moment at Lifeline Hellas is unique and memorable. Each visit to a children's hospital gives me a deep sense of accomplishment as I observe the lives of premature infants being saved in the incubators we have provided. This experience gives us tremendous joy and reward!

■ What is the mission and the main goals of Lifeline Hellas? Do you plan to make any changes during your term, and if so, in what direction? The greatest challenge for Lifeline Hellas is the sheer number of demands that come to our attention. We genuinely wish we could fulfill all the requests from hospitals and institutions that we receive, and we strive tirelessly to satisfy as many as possible. We prioritize the issues, we address depending on

Mrs Papamanoli with Princess Katherine of Serbia

■ How do you secure funding for the organization’s activities? How cοuld interested individuals support Lifeline Hellas, either financially or in other ways?

Lifeline Hellas is entirely funded by sponsorships, contributions, and memberships from people, businesses, and our friends. We take pride in this and want to grow this beautiful community of people who believe in our mission and want to contribute selflessly. We also host roughly four cultural or social events each year, and participation fees help us raise funds for our charitable work. Our sponsors assist us in a variety of ways, including contributing in-kind donations for our events, making recommendations that benefit our work, and publicizing the effectiveness of our donations. Our experience shows that when there is a willingness to contribute, there is always a way to make it happen!

■ What are the prospects and plans for Lifeline Hellas? How do you see the role of Civil Society in Greek society in the coming years? Lifeline Hellas' mission is to continue its humanitarian efforts with the same clarity and reliability, while also collaborating with our offices in London, New York, Toronto, Chicago, and Belgrade to address as many needs as possible in Greece. It is critical to note that at Lifeline Hellas, we think that children should be exposed to charity from a young age. For this reason, we organize programs called "Children Helping Children," which are designed to allow youngsters to give back and experience the joy of giving. Looking ahead, civil society will continue to play an important role in both our future and Greece. I believe that as the younger generation becomes more involved and conscious of social and environmental concerns, this position will expand in importance. We have a responsibility to be proactive and giving for the greater good.

Mrs Papamanoli with Dr. Papaevangelou, Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases of the Medical School of the NKUA

■ What is your opinion on the collaboration between Civil Society and government agencies in Greece? How do you ensure transparency and effectiveness in the organization’s activities?

The data shows that civil society, working with government institutions, may improve residents' quality of life, on a variety of levels. Combining our efforts for the greater benefit, frequently produces outstanding outcomes. We must invest in partnerships and collaborations since we are all members of the same society, interconnected and interdependent. Transparency is our primary and most serious priority, and it is non-negotiable. All donations we make are in kind, which allows our sponsors, friends, and donors to see the tangible results of their contributions, which are recognized with a commemorative plaque bearing their names. Our annual goals are announced at every event, and the impact of the donations is publicly reported. The trust of our supporters is the main reason that Lifeline Hellas has been able to sustain its mission of giving for twenty years.

The Feel-Good Factor

Choosing sustainable materials and methods in interior design is not just about aesthetics; it's also about health. Natural materials such as wood, cotton, and stone can improve indoor air quality and create a healthier living environment. Ecodesign, which integrates these principles, is crucial for fostering both visual appeal and physical well-being.

Implementing Sustainable Design

To incorporate sustainability into your design and everyday life, consider the following:

1. Maximize Natural Light and Ventilation. This reduces the need for artificial lighting and mechanical ventilation, promoting a healthier indoor environment.

2. Use Natural Materials. Opt for materials like wool, cotton, silk, natural woods, and recycled materials for various applications. These materials are not only eco-friendly but also enhance the ambiance of your space.

Reimagine and Reuse

Embrace the idea that what's old can be new again. While modern synthetic materials like acrylics and vinyls were once popular, today's focus on sustainability has revived the use of natural materials and refurbished items.

Bamboo Flooring: A rapidly renewable resource that adds warmth and durability to your floors.

Cotton Drapes and Sheets: Breathable and biodegradable, cotton is an excellent choice for soft furnishings.

Mattresses from Natural Materials: Opt for mattresses made from organic cotton, wool, or latex.

Reimagined Old Furniture: Give old furniture a new life by refurbishing or repurposing it.

Use of Natural Stones: Stones like granite, marble, and slate are durable and add a timeless beauty to interiors.

Wool Carpets and Rugs: Naturally flame-resistant and biodegradable, wool is an excellent choice for floor coverings.

Positive Impacts of Natural Materials

Natural materials bring several benefits to interiors: Healthier Indoor Air Quality: Natural materials are less likely to emit harmful chemicals, contributing to cleaner indoor air.

Aesthetic and Tactile Appeal: They offer a unique, natural beauty and texture that synthetic materials cannot replicate. Environmental Benefits: Using renewable and recyclable materials helps reduce environmental impact and conserves natural resources.

Psychological Well-being: Natural materials resonate with our innate connection to nature, creating a calming and nurturing environment.

In conclusion, sustainable interior design is not just a trend; it's a necessary shift towards a healthier and more responsible way of living. By incorporating natural materials, maximizing natural light, and reimagining the use of old items, we can create beautiful, sustainable spaces that benefit both people and the planet.

Intergenerational trauma

A war or global event, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, can have significant consequences and effects on people's mental health. How are future generations likely to experience transgenerational trauma, and how can EMDR therapy help break this link?

Many times, the person feels trapped, scared, alone, and mostly helpless.

Awar is not all bullets, bombings, and debris. A war does not only have geographical, political, social, and economic effects. In the long term, the biggest destruction it causes is the fragmentation of mental health among those who experience it immediately and for a prolonged period, as well as the mental imprint it can leave and sustain in later generations.

People exposed to an extreme traumatic event, such as a war or the recent pandemic with lockdowns, have a particularly increased chance of experiencing psychological trauma and mental disorders through a wide spectrum of symptoms such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, survival regrets, social withdrawal, low self-esteem, anger, violence, difficulty in emotional regulation, sleep, and interpersonal relationship disorders, substance abuse, etc.

Many times, the person feels trapped, scared, alone, and mostly helpless. Its psycho-emotional charge is so overwhelming that withdrawal seems like the easiest solution. But is it also the most liberating and mentally saving for him? Unfortunately, no. The scientific community now knows that exposure to such extreme conditions can, in many cases, transform into a hard and painful legacy, which will be passed on to the descendants of those exposed to the trauma, remaining "alive" and finding a way to manifest uninvited and autonomously.

Intergenerational trauma can begin with a traumatic event affect-

ing one individual, traumatic events affecting multiple members of a family, or collective trauma affecting larger communities, cultural, racial, ethnic, or other groups or populations (historical trauma).

The term refers to the transference of the mental imprint from one generation to another, or even across multiple generations without any objective risk; to the various expressions of a symptom (epigenetic, emotional, or social); and to the ongoing occurrence of symptoms until the cycle breaks. In recent Greek history, a characteristic example is the psychological effects of the refugees and descendants of the Asia Minor Disaster, which concern a large portion of today's society.

A 1988 study first identified transgenerational trauma in the children of Holocaust survivors, revealing a 300% increase in psychiatric referrals.

The psychotherapeutic approach of trauma therapy and psychotraumatology, which emerged as a result of mass traumatic events of the previous century such as the two World Wars, the Holocaust, and the Vietnam War, as well as large natural disasters and pandemics, is a powerful weapon in the treatment of intergenerational trauma.

According to studies, Francine Shapiro, the originator of the EMDR method (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), founded a pioneering psychotherapy method in 1987 that aimed to process past stressful or traumatic events. The patient experiences these changes through bifocal (bilateral) visual or tactile stimuli, which strengthen associative processes and lead to changes at the level of cognitive, emotional, neurophysiological, and physical sensations.

The relationship between humans and technology is bidirectional. Not only do we change as technologies evolve, but technologies also change as we and our needs evolve.

The goal now is not merely to survive in the digital world by utilizing digital tools for our basic needs, such as remote work, but to leverage technology in a way that enhances the mental health and holistic well-being of everyone, individually and collectively.

This is extremely feasible and necessary today, as one in five workers suffers and becomes dysfunctional, primarily due to anxiety, depression, or burnout. These conditions cost the global economy $2 trillion annually in lost productivity.

This real human need is addressed by the creation of innovative artificial intelligence applications for smart mobile phones that enhance the mental health and holistic well-being of employees. These apps offer personalized, holistic, and clinically validated well-being solutions that are accessible anytime and from anywhere.

How do they work?

Essentially, these applications collect data on lifestyle habits and characteristics closely linked to the user’s mental state, such as sleep quality and quantity, stress levels, and daily mood fluctuations. This is done through simple questions on the phone or, at a more advanced level, through analysis of speech characteristics like rhythm, tone, and volume. It is important to note that conclusions are drawn from the way speech is delivered, not its content.

By analyzing this data in real-time, our innovative applications can not only timely detect symptoms of mental distress and burnout, such

Aligning businesses with the three ESG pillars is essential. Those who do not comply will fall behind, missing the “train” of competition and possibly their future survival.

as stress and burnout but also provide targeted recommendations and effective interventions tailored to the unique needs and characteristics of each user. These cover every aspect of life: physical, mental, professional, and social. This embodies the principle of personalized and timely intervention, which is the modern international trend and recommendation of international organizations.

While traditional interventions only address employees experiencing a crisis, these innovative applications are for everyone. They also have a preventive, holistic, and psychoeducational nature and promote self-care, work-life balance, and the adoption of a healthier and higher-quality lifestyle. Imagine our innovative applications as a Google map that detects in real-time the level of our psychosomatic well-being and provides personalized guidance for better sleep, proper integration of physical activity, and dietary changes, or for techniques to reduce stress and manage a wide range of dysfunctional thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.

Our innovative applications were initially adopted by two industry giants (Volvo and BMW) for their employees. Today, about 2.5 million employees in various sectors use them. They are available in many languages and will be available in Greece by the end of the year.

Their main advantage is that they cater to the mental health and holistic well-being of all employees, not just those in crisis—a condition that significantly reduces productivity and requires access to a healthcare professional. Essentially, they intervene at the right time, with the right level of support and the right tools, addressing the individual's needs and the phase they are in, helping all employees not only avoid crises but also develop and thrive.

Scientific studies show that their use positively impacts factors important in the workplace and personal life, such as reducing absenteeism and stress and improving quality of life, concentration, work engagement, and productivity. It also demonstrates the company’s social responsibility and enhances its ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) ratings, particularly in the Social pillar, which concerns the impact of business operations on society. Aligning businesses with the three ESG pillars is essential. Those who do not comply will fall behind, missing the “train” of competition and possibly their future survival.

Skin Reactions to the Sun

Although the sun is beneficial for what it provides us, we must emphasize the risks of excessive exposure. Our relationship with the sun depends on our skin phototype.

We thank Dr. Nikolaos Voutsakis for the informations, 56 Achilleos str., Palaio Faliro. Tel.: 2109841074, 6945893616

In Greece, most individuals with skin phototypes II and III are sensitive to the sun. This sensitivity causes skin reactions that are immediately noticeable and others that appear in the long term.

Immediate reactions include sunburn and tanning. Sunburn is caused by UVB rays and can range from simple redness to more severe blisters.

Tanning is a natural reaction of the skin, which produces melanin to protect us from ultraviolet rays. Abnormal skin reactions to the sun include photodermatoses, which are mainly caused by UVB and UVA rays or a combination of both.

• Photodermatoses solely caused by the sun are conditions known as sun allergies, characterized by rash and very irritating itching.

• Photosensitizations are conditions not caused exclusively by the sun but also by a substance called a photosensitizer, found in medications applied topically to the skin or taken orally.

• Photo-exacerbated dermatoses are conditions that worsen with sun exposure, such as herpes and acne.

Long-term reactions include sunspots, premature aging (fine lines, wrinkles), melasma, and even skin cancer.

Constantine Volanakis (1837-1907)

FATHER OF GREEK SEASCAPES

The famous painter Constantine Volanakis, born and raised in Crete, is considered to be the most eminent seascape painter of the 19th century. Such was his skill in drawing the sea, that he has been named “The Father of Greek Seascapes”. His strong personal painting style reflected his great love for the sea and his long - more than half a century - career earned him a place among those at the highest level of competence in the Art Academy of Munich. A great example of his strong artistic presence is the painting titled "The Naval Battle of Salamina" which is traditionally put on display at the Greek Prime Minister’s office in Greece. It is worth to be mentioned that he painted a number of seascapes that have been acknowledged as masterpieces. Born in Heraklion Crete, he went to high school in Syros and as a young man he had a job as an accountant in Tergesti. It was during this time of his life that his talent was revealed, as he would do sketches on the accounting books. Once aware, his manager showed great interest in his talent and decided to fund his studies at the famous Munich Academy of Fine Arts. His early works are influenced by the Dutch Art School and by German Romanticism. He later started being in contact with Nikolas Gizi and Nikiforos Lytras and through his travels across Europe he became familiar with the new artistic movements of the period. Upon returning to Greece he was offered a job as Professor of Fine Arts and he finally decided to open an Art School. In the years to follow, he and his family lived in poverty. He died in 1907 due to serious health problems. A century later his masterpieces gained great value and were highly sought after in all famous auctions, such was the tragic role chance played in his life.

Such was his skill in drawing the sea, that he has been named “The Father of Greek Seascapes”

An island with a unique personality and explosive beauty! Its snow-white villages, built high above, embrace the endless blue in a single glimpse. Higher above the water and closer to the sky... Santorini is not for the faint hearted. You can't easily find words to express it; all you can do is feel it with all of your senses.

Its beauty stems from the union of the most intense contrasts. Built higher than the sea, on the vertical redblack cliffs, it gazes from a vantage point at the deep blue waters of the Caldera. It earned global recognition for its stunning sunsets, remarkable architecture, and centuries-old nautical heritage.

You can experience this distinct beauty by strolling along its cobblestone lanes and drinking a glass of superb "Vinsanto." To truly experience its hidden charm, we must walk along its old paths, climb to the crater of its volcano, canoe on the serene waters of the Caldera, swim in crystal-clear seas and beaches with gray and red sand, or arrange a day trip by boat on the Caldera's tranquil waters, stopping at the volcano, the islets of Palaia and Nea Kameni, and Thirasia.

Every village in Santorini has a unique beauty. Some villages, such as Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, and Fira (the capital), have stunning views of the Caldera. Others, like Finikia, Mesaria, Emporio, Karterados, and Pyrgos, are known for their grapes and drought-resistant vegetables (cherry tomatoes, white eggplants, cucumbers, and fava beans).

Discover Fira

Santorini's capital, Fira (Thira), is home to excellent restaurants and a shopping area. But what draws the eye are the winding back lanes and secret chapels to be explored, such as the Cathedral Basilica of St. John the Baptist and the Saint Minas Holy Orthodox Church. A cable car from the historic harbor travels up the cliffside. This is where the cruise ships dock. Fortunately, donkeys don’t continue to carry cruise passengers up, 500 steps.

Stroll in

romantic oia...

You enjoy its charm walking along its caldera cliffs. Its most powerful hour is twilight, when we watch the sun sink into the sea, casting the most exquisite hues across the horizon, as we lean against the battlements of its castle or at the picturesque windmill...

Its houses, painted in white, pink, turquoise, and yellow, cling to the cliff's edge, so close together that it's impossible to distinguish where one starts and the other ends. Two-story captain's houses on the main streets of Marmara and Sidera show the maritime state's wealth. The sailors of Oia, rooted in their homeland but with an unwavering love for the sea, plowed the Mediterranean, Black Sea, Red Sea, and Atlantic with their ships. Theraic's fleet peaked in the 1880s, with 170 sailing vessels. They loaded the renowned sweet wine of Santorini, Vin Santo, as well as Theraic earth, a pumiceporcelain mixture. We begin our tour at the village entrance in Perivola, where St. George is located. The main marblepaved road goes to the Castle and the Windmill, with views of Ammoudi's little port and the sunset. The churches of Panagia Platsani, which dominates the vast square, St. Spyridon, and the Church of the Resurrection all have distinctive iconography. The churches of Finikia, Oia's next settlement, are also worth seeing. Of course, there are occasions for celebrations and festivities. Every saint's feast day is celebrated with food, drink, and dancing, as the people of Santorini are upbeat, joyous, and festive! As we say in our country, it's "what their heart desires"! Attending one of their festivals is an unforgettable experience. The area known as "Monastiri" is the most beautiful neighborhood, showcasing the famous three blue domes that dominate the landscape, together with St. Spyridon and the Church of the Resurrection. Located just below is the little harbor of Armenaki, with its fishing boats and the chapel of St. Nicholas Peramatari situated on the cliff, greeting ships. Numerous wide staircases descend in its two ports, Armeni and Ammoudi. Ammoudi also has a road that is accessible by car. It's worth going there for ouzo and freshly caught seafood. Across from Goula, the neighborhood that enjoys Oia's spectacular sunset, sits Therasia, a sheer cliff that gently descends to the sea with a tiny strip of ground called Riva. The Church of Saint Irene, from which Santorini derives its name, was initially discovered by Venetian sailors. Amidst the narrow streets of Oia, you'll also find the fascinating Maritime Museum of Thera, a true ode to Aegean maritime traditions.

Santorini volcano and therapeuticHot Springs

Santorini Island had a massive volcanic eruption in the distant past. The island eventually became a crescent because of the center sinking. This explains the island's extreme cliffs. You can take a day trip by boat to see the volcano near Santorini. As a result of the volcano, there are nearby natural hot springs. The waters will be muddy, dark, and reddish because of manganese, iron, and sulfur. People suffering from rheumatism, arthritis, muscle stiffness, or skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis benefit greatly from the hot springs.

ammoudi

Nestled under Oia, this tiny harbor offers several excellent seafood restaurants by the crystal-clear waters. In addition to being the starting point for numerous boat cruises that visit the volcano and hot springs, it is well-known for romantic sunset dinners. You can take a car or taxi to go to Ammoudi, or you can walk the more than 280 steps alongside Oia's Castle.

Imerovigli

Imerovigli is a peaceful village perched on the highest point of the cliffside on Santorini Island. It has blue-domed churches and white-chalked houses, just like Oia. It provides never-ending views of the volcano, the massive Skaros rock, and the shimmering sea. It also has a ton of mouthwatering restaurants with breathtaking sunset views.

Hike up Skaros Rock

Overlooking the whole area is a massive rock formation called Skaros. It just takes fifteen minutes to trek up to Skaros Rock when visiting Imerovigli. There, you'll discover the remnants of what was once thought to be Santorini's capital—an ancient Venetian fortress.

Megalochori

Wandering in the alleyways of Megalochori, which is famous for its beautiful architecture, mansions, cave houses, and blue-domed churches! Numerous authentic taverns and cafes may be found in the village's main square.

Pyrgos

Pyrgos is the highest point on the island, and it offers an amazing view of both sides of Santorini. It is located about 8 kilometers from Fira and here you will find a magnificent castle, winding, picturesque streets, and panoramic views.

Georgia Nomikou

"We emphasize culture, the geo-environment, and the local agricultural products of Santorini"

georgia nomikou comes from emporio, Thira, and is the first female President of the Municipal Council of the Municipality of Thira and the President of the Municipality's Tourism Committee. With studies initially in accounting and later on in european Culture, she has served as a member of the administration of the South Santorini Tourism association and is a founding member of the Thira Branch of the Hellenic Society for the environment and Culture from 2019 to the present. She is actively involved in sustainable development and environmental issues on the island.

development. What is your vision and what initiatives are you planning?

We are planning to promote the island's tourism with an emphasis on a Santorini that visitors have yet to discover, and enact policies focused on culture, the island's geo-environment, and local agricultural goods.

■ For a visitor coming to the island for the first time, can you tell us 3 places you would definitely recommend visiting?

For those visiting the island for the first time, I recommend visiting the prehistoric city of Akrotiri and the prehistoric museum in Fira to be enchanted by my ancestors' history, which dates back at least 3500 years. I highly recommend visiting the Vlychada beach in the southeastern part of the island, which is a unique geological marvel with impressive beauty, formed by a volcanic eruption during the Minoan era, whose ash formed the rocks that have been sculpted by wind and sea into intricate and unusual shapes. Finally, I would tell them to view the beautiful colors of the sky at sunset from the island's capital, Fira.

■ How do you promote and preserve the cultural heritage of Santorini in combination with sustainable development?

Culture and tourism are intrinsically connected and should be treated as such. We advocate for the execution of a study to connect cultural routes for visitors on the island, significantly improve the promotion of the island's cultural heritage, plan the construction of new cultural spaces, and aim to highlight the island's history from Akrotiri's antiquity to the remarkable folk architecture of pre-earthquake Santorini.

thePrehistoric City of akrotiri

it is the most significant discovery found on the island and in the entire eastern Mediterranean. The site preserves, almost untouched by time, three-story houses, the city walls, and the steps of its streets, frescoes, and hundreds of objects.

Archaeological Sites & Museums in Santorini

Museums

Santorini has two Archaeological Museums: the "Museum of Prehistoric Thera" and the "Archaeological Museum of Thera." Both are located in Fira, with the former at the entrance of the town and the latter in the center, next to the cable car. at the "Museum of Prehistoric Thera," you can see some of the most important frescoes of international

archaeological interest found in the Prehistoric Settlement of akrotiri, as well as significant objects from the neolithic to the late Bronze age. at the "archaeological Museum of Thera," you can view items and statues from the archaic, roman, Hellenistic, and geometric periods, discovered during excavations in Santorini. Both museums house findings of great archaeological value, internationally renowned for their richness. in combination with the archaeological site of the "Prehistoric City of akrotiri," which is expected to be open to visitors again soon, they constitute the most important archaeological sites on the island.

The museums are open and accessible year-round except for Mondays, from 09:00 to 15:00.

The Maritime Museum in Oia

The museum is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building in Oia and is open to visitors during the summer months. Here, you can see objects, photographs, manuscripts, diaries, ship models, and documents related to the island's significant maritime history from the early 1900s to 1940.

Lignos Folklore Museum

The museum is housed in spaces, many of which are cave-like, created in 1861 to serve as a mansion and winery. The owner, Mr. lignos, after years of research, gathered many old items which he now exhibits, showcasing how various small businesses operated in the past, such as a shoemaker’s shop, a cooper’s workshop, and others. The chapel of Saint Constantine, which celebrates on May 21st and attracts many visitors, is also located here. The museum is open during the summer months from 09:00 to 14:00 and 18:00 to 20:00.

Koutsoyannopoulos Wine Museum

it is the only Wine Museum in greece and one of the most popular in Santorini. located on the road to Kamari, the museum showcases the wine-making process in Santorini. exhibits include old machinery for grape pressing and the final bottling stages. The museum is almost entirely underground, located 3-10 meters below the surface.

Art Space Winery

The underground winery was constructed in 1860 and operated as one of the largest wine producers on the island until the 1956 earthquake, after which it was abandoned. it was revived by the founder's grandson, antonis argyros, in 1998. every summer, it hosts significant art works by greek and european artists, with the exhibits being renewed annually.

For dives and enjoyment by the sea...

We'll swim at some of the island's most distinctive beaches, like Perissa, Perivolos, Kamari, Vlychada, White Beach (reachable only by boat from Akrotiri), Red Beach (reachable on foot or by boat from Akrotiri), and Monolithos, which have gray sand or red and black pebbles. Adventurers seeking an alternate form of transportation can hike the island's trails, dive, ride horses, participate in water sports, and much more. No matter how we choose to spend our time, we'll inevitably end up at a little seaside taverna or a small restaurant with a view of the sea, where we can savor exceptional flavors created with local, fresh ingredients and the care of the people who prepared them. As we leave, let's hold onto this unique beauty like a well-guarded secret, so it may forever accompany our minds and hearts...

vineyards of Santorini

Santorini's vineyards, the world's oldest under continuous cultivation, thrives due to its unique volcanic ecosystem. The soil, rich in porcelain and pumice, coupled with the island's microclimate, provides exceptional conditions for grape growing. The vines, pruned in a basket shape (kouloura) to protect them from wind and sun, survive in extremely dry conditions. Remarkably, Santorini's vines are free from phylloxera, maintaining their primary characteristics. The island's signature grape, Assyrtiko is used in both dry and sweet PDO wines like Santorini and Vinsanto. White grapes Athiri and Aidani, the red Mandilaria are popular in Aegean Cyclades islands. Mavrotragano, another indigenous red grape, is also gaining popularity. It is imperative to visit one of the island's many wineries, including Koutsoyannopoulos, Roussos, Sigalas, Argyros, Boutari, Artemis Karamolegos, Gavalas, Hatzidakis, Venetsanos, Gaia Wines, Vassaltis Vineyards, and others, as the island produces an abundance of fine wines. We will discover a great deal about the local wine culture there.
