DIY Selfie Station

It’s hard to tell women not to splurge on the perfect set of heels for her wedding day, but it has to be said. With your gown flowing down to the floor, and the train trailing behind you for three feet, guests will hardly get a glance at the pricey pumps.

Guests will be capturing several selfies at your wedding. One after getting ready. One after seeing their friend at the ceremony. One during cocktail hour. One standing by the bar. You get it.

As painful as it may be to walk away from Jimmy Choo’s perfect lines and hand-pieced jewelry, your money could be better spent on your gown or accessories that will make an impact and be seen throughout the day.

So why not embrace the selfie craze by setting up a “Selfie Station” for your guests to use as a backdrop for their photos? You can easily use a unique area of your venue, hang a sequin linen, or get creative by getting some scissors out and making a one-of-a-kind backdrop. In lieu of the photo booth, a selfie station allows your guests to grab their friends, snap a photo, and immediately upload it to social media using your wedding hashtag.

Why try to re-create beauty at your wedding when it is all around us? Embrace nature by hosting your whole wedding outside, or at the very least the ceremony.

By: Virginia Merrit

Q: What are the perks to working with a local stationer as opposed to an online invitation dealer? When would be the best time for them to do that? A: There are several benefits to hiring a local stationery press verses working online. Sometimes it's good to just sit down and talk through your wedding details with someone who can suggest coordinating paper pieces. If you have personalized details, a good designer can help pull those ideas together to create a personalized suite that really sets the tone of your wedding for the guests. You get to put your hands on the papers and different printing styles that are available versus looking at something on a screen. Many elements are often interchangeable and you're not limited like you are online. You're able to pick and choose which elements of your suite you actually needed instead of a pre-determined package. You can often coordinate your day-of items (programs, place cards, seating charts, signage) with your invitations to have your wedding aesthetic cohesive from the first glimpse they have to various details on your big day. You also don't run the risk of getting something in the mail you're unhappy with days before they need to go in the mail. When working with a local stationery, you're in constant communication with the same person and throughout the process you have a better idea of your final product. Our stationery press shop has several gift items and other paper products that might be helpful to planning your big day such as planners, wedding specific greeting cards, and bridal party gifts.

Indie Olive 785-979-2510 706 Main Street Eudora, KS indieolive.com virginia@indieolive.com

Q: What percentage of my wedding budget should be used for stationery? A: Typically, I say 5% but this percentage can vary. One thing to keep in mind is that stationery can involve many items, including: save-the-dates, invitations, programs, place cards, menus and signage. The list can go on and on. Save-the-dates and invitations are the first look for your wedding guests. You want to make it something special and personal that gets them excited for your big day. Q: I’m completely overwhelmed. I don’t know the etiquette or what style would be suitable for my wedding. What should I do? A: Hire a stationer. Sit down for a consult, let them pick your brain and guide you through the process.

Q: What is the process for a wedding invitation order? A: We offer two different processes at Indie Olive; both starting with a consult either in person or online. We use this opportunity to look through examples we have in house, including items we’ve custom designed before and specially curated invitation albums from some of the top stationer’s in the country. If you select an example from one of our albums, we’ll take some notes on any change requests (i.e.: colors, fonts.) and then proceed with your order by sending a proof. Your invitations would be completed shortly after approval. If you select a custom designed invitation suite, we’ll take several notes at our meeting and send a custom quote. Once the quote has been approved, and the deposit has been placed, we’ll complete your design proof in 1-2 weeks and stay in touch through the proofing processes. Once you’re proofs are approved, we’ll go to print and your invitations will be available to ship or pick up shortly after. You’ll work with the same stationer through the entire process and get the individual service every bride deserves.

Q: How long does the invitation process take? A: Traditionaly, it is ideal to send invitations out 6-8 weeks prior to your event and save the dates 6-8 months before. You should safely allow yourself 1-2 weeks for addressing your envelopes and 6-8 weeks for design and production of your custom invites. Ideally you should start contacting invitation dealers 5-6 months before your wedding to insure plenty of time on your custom design. If you are going with a pre-selected design you can save a little time as they take approximately 3 weeks from beginning to end. It's always a good idea to start the process early, even if you don’t have all of the details nailed down yet. To see some of Virginia's inspiring work on custom Save-the-Dates, visit page 14.

RAISE THE BAR o n y o u r b a r By: Mary Rodiguez, Owner, Diamond Girls Bartending

The date has been set, the venue chosen, the dress purchased, the cake selected, but oh wait – what about the bar? It is a common mistake to place bar service on the back burner. However, the bar is a regular hit with guests and hiring a professional bar service can insure that your reception will be all that guests are talking about for years.

Ways to create a unique bar selection for your wedding: Match Your Theme

Mary Rodriguez has over 20 years experience in the entertainment and hospitality industries and has set out to raise the bar in the offerings and levels of professional bartending services in the Kansas City area. With their experienced staff, they not only offer professional bartenders and servers for your formal affairs, but also offer professional entertainers and flair bartenders.

32

When considering which style of bar service is best suited for you, first make note of your wedding theme. If you are having a casual, country wedding, perhaps a bar with a gingham tablecloth, mason jars and chalkboard menus would be best suited. Don’t forget to customize the cocktails as well–serve spiked lemonade as a signature drink. Casual-atmosphere weddings commonly skip the full bar and opt for beer and wine and a signature cocktail. If your wedding tastes lean towards a formal atmosphere, then opt for crystal glassware. Serve champagne toasts and make sure your bar reflects a formal theme with linen tablecloths, crystal tip jars and crystal decanters. In a formal atmosphere, it is recommended to offer a full formal bar offering all premium alcohols. Seasonal Consideration Embrace the season in which your wedding is taking place. For spring and summer weddings, consider a light and fruity alcohol punch as a signature cocktail. Blueberry-infused lemonade mixed with vodka or strawberry daiquiris are a few seasonal hits. For fall, fancy your guests with a mulled cider mixed with bourbon. If you are leaning towards a winter reception, look for cocktails that match a winter theme, such as cranberry cocktails or eggnog punch.

Color There is a drink of every color! Many couples opt for signature cocktails that match the colors of their wedding. A good bartending service is very adept at using food coloring to change the colors of cocktails. Bring color swatches to your pre-wedding meetings so the bartenders can experiment with food coloring and make it a perfect match.

Destination Some couples opt for a destination wedding and have a reception once they return home. In that case, the bar is the best way to showcase your travels. If you got married in Jamaica, you might serve rum punch and Red Stripe beer. For a Mexican destination wedding, why not serve all Mexican import beers and instead of the traditional champagne toast – tequila shot toast!

Let there be

Lace

Kate Mess is a contemporary jeweler that wanted to make a few meaningful pieces to wear on her wedding day. Her love for pattern and ornamentation led her to choosing a gorgeous vintage lace dress. Her creativity spiraled from there, leading her to etching a portion of the lace design on her dress onto her wedding ring. From that day on she could wear a reminder of the unbelievable day and a small resemblance to the beautiful dress she once wore. The lace offered so many beautiful designs that she also made a cuff bracelet and necklaces for her mom, mother-in-law, and bridal party. Kate loves to share her meaningful custom jewelry with couples in search of unique, personalized rings that invoke both their lives and passions.

To find out more about Kate and how you can get your custom ring made, visit her website at www.katemessjewelry.com. You can also email Kate directly at kate@katemessjewelry.com.

36

The Story of Oren & April Kate recently designed rings for April and Oren, both musicians. When starting a project, Kate first tries to get a sense of the couples' personalities. This allows her to design a meaningful ring for each partner, often using unique textures significant to their lives and passions. April is passionate about textile and fiber arts, and was drawn to the idea of a lace ring. Lace from her mother’s wedding dress was used; a dress that April would be wearing on her wedding day as well. Oren had drawn runes (ancient symbols used to predict ones future) symbolizing love, creativity, protection, and wealth that he wanted to incorporate in their rings. In the end, Kate reversed the textures on their bands, so each person has a ring that suits them, with a secret element of the other’s on the inside. April’s has the prominent lace motif with the runes on the inside, and Oren’s has a rough texture with the runes spaced around the outside with April’s lace on the inside. April also wanted an non-traditional diamond ring. They found a beautiful, raw light blue diamond, and it was set in an 18k yellow gold bezel on a simple band, rough textured to match Oren’s.

7 By: Timmy Gibson, Relationship Coach Timmy Gibson is Kansas City’s relationship expert. Along with his wife of 20 years, Jana, they founded Restore, which is a Relationship Coaching Service with a vision to help couples have the kind of relationship they’ve always dreamed of having. They have been helping couples write their love story for over 15 years here in Kansas City and are considered the go-to couple for all things relationships. CRITICAL CONVERSATIONS FOR COUPLES

The key to a healthy relationship is communication! But not just any ol’ ‘communication’, but the right kind of communication. It is important to make sure that you are communicating in a loving manner. Here are seven conversations every couple should have before tying the knot.

1) Recognizing Unhealthy Practices

We all have learned unhealthy ways of communication. Un-learn them.

2) Finding the Raw Spots

There are raw spots in us all, and they are easy to spot-if the reaction to a perceived offense seems way out of proportion or something small blows up out of left field. In insecure relationships, we disguise our vulnerabilities so our partner never really sees us.

Anger tells us to approach and fight. Shame tells us to withdraw and hide. Fear tells us to flee or freeze, or in extreme cases turn and attack. Sadness primes us to grieve and let go. We do not need to be prisoners of our pasts.

3) Revisiting a Rocky Moment

A conversation can blow up, and when it does, it may be good to lay it down and pick it up later when the emotions have calmed down. However, make sure to revisit the issue so it doesn’t go un-resolved.

4) Tell Your Partner What You Need, Even if it’s Difficult

This is a lot harder in real life. We often steer clear of difficult things. But it doesn’t do anyone any good to let your needs go unmet, as well as unspoken.

46

5) Forgiving Injuries

We have all been hurt, and we all have hurt others. Its life. We must forgive. Even if someone wronged us and hasn’t asked us for forgiveness, we must forgive. It does our soul well to let things go.

7) Keeping Your Love Alive

All relationships can suffer from a slow death if we do not keep the fire stoked. It’s our job to keep the love alive. We must be intentional with our love.

6) Bonding Through Sex and Touch

I am a big promoter of touch and sex, it heals the soul. I have even encouraged couples who are struggling to have sex every day for a month and just see how it affects the relationship.

Diy: If the shoe fits... By Amani Skalacki

The shoes you choose to accompany your wedding dress have become as important as the dress itself. Every bride has a picture of her shoes in her wedding album. Heels are great for the ceremony but wearing them late into the night can be a bit of a challenge. Brides are opting for something a bit more comfortable when it comes to dancing the night away at the reception. While kicking off your shoes and going barefoot is great if you are at the beach, it’s just not practical at most reception venues. Here is an easy DIY that won't have you sacrificing fashion for comfort.

Materials you will need:

Steps in making shoes:

1 A simple pair of comfortable flats, Scissors, Grommet kit, Hammer, Ribbon, Fabric glue, Vintage rhinestone clips

2 Determine where you would like the holes for the ribbon ties. Mark each hole. Pierce holes with scissors.

3 48

ter e W in ide. h t n i Br en As se sue of EA s i 2014

Insert grommets. Follow the instructions on grommet kit to secure each grommet with the tool and a hammer. Feed ribbon through grommet holes.

4 Attach vintage rhinestone clips with fabric glue.

Slip on your shoes and dance the night away!

Wedding Wise

During the wedding planning process, a mother often focuses on everyone else and then realizes she does not have a dress! Special orders for mothers' gowns take around 12 weeks just like bridesmaids' gowns. When she waits until the last minute, she has to buy something off the rack instead of having the opportunity to order the color and size she really wanted. Take time to pamper your mom too. You want her to feel beautiful and comfortable!

– Geri Watts, Wedding Expressions by Geri Cocktail hour means exactly that. Please try to not keep your guests waiting an extremely long time. You are correct in assuming that it is YOUR day-Of course it is..but don’t become “that bride” who kept her guests on a two hour wait. I am sure you have been at a reception where you can actually feel the tension of the crowd. – Wanda Brizendine, Hy-Vee Catering

Complete all of the hard work before the wedding so you can enjoy yourself and have a fun time.Make sure that you have made all of your major decisions and have paid everyone before your reception so you don't have to do anything but party. Trust me, you deserve it! If you do have to make some last minute decisions or pay vendors that evening, appoint a family member or trusted friend to take care of it for you. – Jon Bartlett, Remix DJ 50

Take the time to coordinate a "last dance" song selection with your DJ. It's a great way to ensure the event ends on a high note exactly as planned!

Look for a bartending service whose practices reflect your personal beliefs– perhaps you would prefer a company that practices GREEN and recycles or uses only organic products in their signature cocktails. Don't settle for less than your personal standards. – Mary Rodiguez, Diamond Girls Bartending

When a bride and groom are in the process of building a perfect menu remember that the night is about you. Choose the foods that you would enjoy and that make the night perfect for you. If a guest that has been invited has a very special allergy add on a meal or a few side dishes to accommodate them individually. Always pick a menu that suits your tastes especially since you are the star of the night! You deserve this! – Rolfe Loomis, Plaza Catering

– Kris Nardini, PlatinumProductions

Make your wedding about YOU- find ways to include your hobbies, dog-children, and special family members in your big day. There can be no wedding like YOUR wedding.

– Britney Jones, The Cotillion

Be sure you put a few things you may need the first day into your carry-on luggage just in case anything happens. Include necessary toiletries, an extra pair of underwear, a small washcloth and towel, and any medications you may be taking. Never pack your medications in checked baggage. Keep medicines in their original, labeled containers. Bring copies of your prescriptions and the generic names for the drugs. – Robert Riesmeyer, Travel Benefits by Design

Planning your dream day is just the start. When the day is long done, it’s all about planning your dream life together, and that starts with getting your financial priorities aligned. Get your financial profile created from the get-go to ensure your first step as man and wife is on the right foot. - Rachel Adams, Harrison Capital Management

I used to not pressure my couples into either seeing each other before the wedding day or not. It is their day and their choice so we make the itinerary fit however they see necessary as photographers. However, after hearing so much feedback from my couples about how they wish they would’ve seen their spouse before the wedding, and after recently experiencing our very own wedding, I know the importance of seeing each other before. My goal is really to educate my couples on the necessary of a ‘First site.’ Your day flies by so fast, that, most importantly, seeing each other before allows you to spend the WHOLE DAY together. Secondly, it allows you to get your jitters out, and be quiet and still together, enjoying each other’s presence during your only alone time that day. Third, it allows you to get a lot more photographs in and to get them all done before the ceremony so your guests don’t have to wait for you before the reception starts. Its a win-win for all involved. - Jana Marie, Jana Marie Photography

Cold winter months are hard on your hair. To keep your hair wedding ready, you will need a routine. I recommend regular salon visits to trim the ends and weekly conditioning treatments at home to all of my brides. Keep in mind that using hot water can cause hair to loose moisture, so try to rinse with cooler water during the winter. - Traci Morby, Traci Morby Styling

When finding the perfect gownsmaller parties are always better. Your opinion is the only opinion that matters, and with fewer voices that choice is much easier! - Rachel Simmons, Ivory & Lace

Consider bringing along a second pair of shoes to wear during wedding party and bride & groom photos if you are going to an outdoor location. Having a pair of shoes that are more comfortable for walking and moving quickly, and that you don’t mind getting a little dirty or scuffed up, will help save both your feet (you will be on them all day!) and your beloved wedding day shoes that you searched tirelessly for until you found the perfect pair! Most wedding dresses completely cover the bride’s shoes, so no one will ever know. Just be sure your photographer gets a few shots of those gorgeous heels at some other point in the day! - Beth Hodge, Melissa & Beth

Consider a destination wedding! Destination weddings are nearly always much less expensive than a traditional wedding! Everything can be customized with every detail arranged according to your wishes and budget. You can begin your honeymoon immediately in your chosen ideal setting! Plus, your guests will have a “vacation” at the same time. And of course, always work with a professional travel consultant with expertise in destination weddings who can arrange the best local wedding planners in your destination of choice, offer many promotional specials unavailable to the public, and guide you in assuring you and your guests the best value and ease in booking the trip. - Beverly Falley, Island Dreams Travel

When selecting a location for your wedding reception it is important to review each venue closely and confirm the products and services included in their rates. Upon closer analysis, you may be surprised to find that ‘cheaper’ priced venues can quickly become more expensive than those that are initially perceived as ‘pricey’ once all of your event needs are outlined and all costs itemized. - Kimberly Kruse, Arrowhead EABride.com

StyledSeating The purpose of a head table is to create a focal point at the reception at which you would be the main attraction. For hundreds of years, newlyweds have been adorning head tables with lavish decor, the finest food, and the company of their family and friends. Determining the look and design on your head table is important as you lay out the floorplan of your reception. Don’t feel pressured to adhere to the traditional head table, think outside the box and design a table that fits your style and relationship.

Traditional: seats the bride and groom in the middle with the bridesmaids seated to the side of the bride and the groomsmen seated to the side of the groom.

Questions to Consider: How many people are in your wedding party? How much space do you have in the venue? How many wedding party members have a date not seated at the head table? How many tables can your venue provide you? How many linens and decorations will be needed? 54

g

b

or

g

g

Tuscan: seats the bride and groom in the middle next to each other, facing all of their guests in the room. Bridal party and dates are seated around the table (can be seated like above or alternated as shown).

b

Sweetheart: seats only the bride and groom; wedding party sits amongst other guests.

Sweetheart + Bridal Party: seats the bride and groom in the middle with the bridal party at round tables flanking each side of the sweetheart table. Bonus: provides extra room for the dates of the bridal party to sit with them.

“ D i d t h a t re a l l y j u s t h a p p e n ? ”

I, Brandon, take you uhh....

Brandon had been editing his vows for weeks prior to the wedding. He silently practiced them at home the morning of the wedding and accidently left them on the kitchen table. Luckily, having worked on them for so long, he essentially had them memorized and was able to rewrite them while playing Settlers of Catan. -Hannah & Brandon

Hold still babe, I’ll kill it...

We had fantastic weather for our outdoor wedding- could not complain! However, the mosquitoes were a totally different story. They were vicious! We were spraying insect repellent instead of perfume before the ceremony. When we had our photos taken after the wedding, we couldn’t hold a pose longer than five seconds. If we did, the bugs would start to attack. When Brice and I were standing there looking at one another for a photo, we could see mosquitoes swarming one another’s head. The photographer said that in some photos, you could even see us getting bit! We had bug bites itching all over our honeymoon, but it was totally worth it! - Katie & Brice

We are supposed to sign something?....

We forgot our marriage certificate on the day of the wedding and didn’t have it signed until after the honeymoon. Besides that, everything went off without a hitch. -Michael

Wait, we didn’t invite you...

There weren’t enough seats at the ceremony because the venue told us there are always a handful of people that don’t show up, which I thought seemed strange but they are the experts after all. In our case, we actually had someone come who wasn’t invited. As we stood at the altar soaking in the love of those around us, I suddenly noticed an acquaintance of mine whom I had not invited. My mind instantly started thinking about where he would sit for dinner (we had assigned seats for exactly 150 guests) and why the heck was he there! I quickly reeled in my thoughts to refocus on my wedding ceremony!- Hannah & Brandon

58

Who should we call for a ride....

After the ceremony, Brice and I took off in our getaway car, his old red Chevy pick-up, to take a few personal photos with the photographer. Brice had worked so hard to get the truck all cleaned up and ready to go, but forgot to check the gas gauge. We ended up running out of gas on the way back to the ceremony site. Thank goodness it was all downhill, we coasted the entire way back into the driveway, and hopped into another vechicle to get us to the reception. -Katie

Mission impossible...

While I was getting my hair done, my bridesmaids were looking at my dress which was hanging on a special hook in the corner of the room. We began talking about it and how it would eventually be bustled. My Mom decided to demonstrate. The demonstration did not go well. With my back to them, I wasn’t paying much attention. A few minutes went by and I heard muffled conversation. Finally, I turned around and saw four of them examining every inch of the dress (three of them were actually under the dress), as they tried to figure out how to solve the mystery of the bustle. It was pretty humorous, so funny that it warranted a picture. My mom called alterations and was definitely in Momma mode on her mission to find answers. Several minutes later, the bustle dilemma was resolved and I was able to move about all night long with no fear of stepping on my train. -Melissa

Advice from the Aisle

We d d i n g W i s d o m f ro m N e w l y w e d s

From the Bride: Absolutely get a day-of planner! My friends told me this but I put it off and they were all booked. The details are worth it if you’re enjoying them. If executing a detail (making decorative elements etc.) feels like a burden, don’t do it. People don’t notice them so it’s really about you loving the process. Play to your strengths as a couple. Don’t force each other to execute things just for the sake of equal distribution of tasks. - Hannah The wedding should NOT be all about the Bride; it is a special day for the Bride, but should be a celebration of a commitment to a new life together with the Bride AND Groom. If you keep in mind your guests, family, children, best friends, and venue workers while planning and during the wedding week preparations, there will be less stress and drama, and you and everyone else will have a more enjoyable time. -Kathleen The advice I would give would be to not sweat the small stuff. Surround yourself with the people you love and enjoy every second of it. Even what might seem like a stressful situation really isn’t that bad when you put things into perspective. When I was wedding dress shopping with my Mom and sisters in Kansas City, I was torn between two gowns. The consultant (who was as sweet as can be) said, “I know this is really stressful and so hard right now”, and I thought to myself, ‘If this is stressful and hard, sign me up for this any day!’ Maybe it was a tough decision…but it was the best, most fun ‘tough’ decision I’d ever had to make! Having to choosing between two beautiful wedding gowns that I would get to wear to marry the man of my dreams… yeah, I can think of much more difficult situations. -Melissa

70

Enjoy this stage of your relationship- it comes & goes so quickly. It’s going to be stressful, but incorporate each other in the decisions & be respectful. Also, try to find the fun in it allafter all it’s one of the most important days of your life!- Lisa Hurst

From the Groom: To the men, be as involved or as not involved as your fiancée wants you to be. I was very involved in the process and gave lots of input and it was almost completely stress free. Melissa was the main reason for that. Don’t take no for an answer, it is your special day, and plan it exactly how you want it. Make sure you have a video of the ceremony, you’re going to want it. My biggest piece of advice is to take some time that day before the ceremony, to just be together, just the two of you, it will be worth it.- Michael Make sure to pick your priorities; those things are worth spending extra time on. Don’t sweat the small stuff. And planning pictures is not as small of a task as you may think and is worth spending time on in advance. -Brandon

From the Couple: We planned a wedding on the other side of the country in ten weeks and did not go crazy. We learned early on that getting stressed about wedding planning was a choice, not an inevitability. Our biggest piece of advice is just to relax, to have fun, and focus on creating the touches that are meaningful to you. Let your wedding be uniquely personal. Understand that the things you touch on your wedding day become heirlooms, and when you’re creating a bond like marriage, those heirlooms become precious. So take the time to let those meaningful things surface and allow your wedding day to be a beautiful love story in itself. Weddings are not about itineraries and posing, or about the latest trends and etiquette. They are about you, so tell your story, and then enjoy it! So many couples get so bugged out about planning that they forget to enjoy the happiest day of their lives. Let yourself feel the love that everyone is there to help you celebrate! Weddings are beautiful and joyous occasions and everyone loves a good love story so let yourself be happy and just ride the wave! -Caleb & Tara

8

Our biggest piece of advice for engaged couples it to take your time. Take your time to truly enjoy being engaged, before rushing into any planning. It’s a once in a lifetime feeling, and just being engaged is reason enough to celebrate! Soak it all in and really enjoy the feeling and butterflies! When you’re ready to start planning, do what feels right for you, as a couple, and tell your story of your unique relationship. Pick something that’s really important to you, and stick to it, and have a day-of coordinator to take care of all the vendors and questions on your big day so you can relax, drink some mimosas, and take it all in! And don’t sweat the wedding favors, an epic night is something everyone can take home with them! -Brice & Katie

The necklace I wore on my wedding day was borrowed from my Grandmother. It was the exact necklace she had worn, and two generations before her, on their wedding day. It was the best good luck charm I could have.

Brice and I wrote love letters to each other on the day of our wedding. We write letters to each other often, and debated writing our own vows for the ceremony. We ultimately decided that private letters to each other was more our style, and planned to read them alone before the ceremony. What we didn’t plan was that we both wrote our letters on the same stationary paper- the paper Brice used to write my proposal letter on. 76

Brice and I both grew up in the same small town in Northwest Missouri. He was a senior, the star football player, and the homecoming king candidate. I was the dorky freshman, who crushed on Brice from afar, always keeping my eye on him during our lunch hour. He, of course, had no idea I existed. And I had no confidence to go up and talk to him. Four years later, I move to Springfield, MO to attend my first year of college at MSU with my best friend from high school. I come back to my dorm one day after class, and my roommate is talking about how she ran into Brice at Taco Bell on campus. I remember being instantly embarrassed, totally forgetting about my crush until his name is brought up. The embarrassment instantly turned into jealously that I wasn’t with her, and missed my chance to see him. I spent the rest of the year knowing he was down there, and secretly hoping to run into him, with never having any luck. A year later, I transfered schools and moved back to KC. My same best friend began dating this older guy, who happened to be, unknown to me, Brice’s best friend. One night, after being ditched by my girlfriend for her new boy, I found myself at a house party with a couple of friends. I walked into the house, and who else is sitting in a recliner in the living room, but Brice, who had also been ditched by the pair. My face burning, I tried to play it cool. I nonchalantly sat on the floor, close to his chair, and texted my sisters, telling them they won’t believe who is at this party. After no luck at playing poker, pitch, or any other card game, I pathetically asked if someone would play “Go Fish” with me. Brice, speaking to me for the first time, offered to play. So the two of us sat alone, playing “Go Fish”, and eventually exchanged numbers. Our first date was two days later, and we never stopped seeing each other from that moment. It was always easy between Brice and I, and we instantly became each others best friend. We found out that we had been crossing paths our entire lives, he grew up next door to my Aunt and Uncle and was childhood friends with one of my childhood friends. It was crazy we had never talked to one another before that night, but we were definitely meant to meet when we did.

After debating between a few dates, Michael and I decided to get married on August 30th, 2014. It wasn’t until a few days later when I shared with my Grandpa Jack the date we had decided on, that he told me that he married my late Grandmother on the same date many years ago. If that wasn’t enough, a few months later, my aunt came across an old document that revealed that my Great Grandfather and Grandmother also shared August 30th as their wedding date. It was more than a coincidence. Our goal for the wedding was to have our family and friends be stress-free and not responsible for any of the major events on the day of the wedding. We wanted everyone to relax and enjoy the moment. There were various people helping, and because of all of these wonderful people, the day was virtually stress-free for Michael, myself, and our families. We were even more grateful for all of these individuals when Mother Nature decided to force our outdoor ceremony under the reception tent due to rain and hail. It was a bit disappointing that the ceremony didn’t happen outdoors the way we had planned, but the fact that we would be husband and wife at the end of the day made any problem seem petty and un-important. We were all smiles through the raindrops, and were blessed with a beautiful rainbow that appeared over the tent just as the ceremony finished. We didn’t have a particular theme for the wedding, but the vibe we wanted to create was simple elegance. The tent was decorated with flowers in shades of white, green, and purple. Beautiful white draping along the ceiling added a soft and romantic touch. The reception was complete with a delicious dinner and all of the traditional reception events. We even made time for a few sparkler photos at dusk. The evening ended as we exited through a tunnel of sparklers held by our friends and family and climbed into a classic car. When I think back on the day, I don’t think of the cake, or the flowers, or the dress. I think of the people I was surrounded by and the emotions I felt. Most importantly, I think of him. I think of Michael and the commitment we made to each other on our wedding day, and I can’t help but grin as I think of spending the rest of my life with him.

His Favorite Moment of the Day: My favorite memories are from Melissa walking down the aisle, our first kiss as man and wife, and the special time we spent together after our first look. Her Favorite Moment of the Day: An unforgettable part of the wedding weekend occurred not on our wedding day, but at the rehearsal dinner. In the midst of the mingling and chatting after the meal, Michael subtly began setting up a large TV in the front of the room. Needless to say, I became suspicious. At the beginning of our engagement we had talked about creating a slideshow to play at the rehearsal dinner, but for various reasons decided against it. As my curiosity grew, Michael hooked his laptop to the TV, dimmed the lights, and I saw a picture of a little baby that I recognized all too well- it was me. He had surprised me with a slideshow with photographs documenting our lives from birth, all the way up until just a few weeks prior. My friends and family were in on it too as they provided the pictures, all without me knowing. I was a mess of happy tears.

Personal Pieces Our wedding rings were carried in a box that Brandon’s dad made for him as a Christmas gift. This became extra sentimental as his father passed away from cancer two weeks after our wedding. Inside the box, the rings sat atop two origami cranes that belonged to his grandma. My ring was his great grandmother’s ring.

86 86

Brandon and Hannah knew that they wanted their wedding to reflect their values by featuring local vendors and handmade products. Being boheminans that live in Johnson County, they came to realize they are equally glam as they are granola… thus the guiding theme was “glamorous granola.” As a head-in-the-clouds, big-picture kind of guy, Brandon was thankful for the uneven splitting of wedding planning responsibilities. Hannah handled nearly all of the details by creating a monster checklist in an excel spreadsheet.

We commissioned a painting as a wedding gift to each other and unveiled it during our first look.

It was important to Brandon’s family to host everyone for the rehearsal dinner at their home. Through hundreds of man-hours and the help of family and friends, the backyard was transformed into an oasis for a perfect evening of food, drink, toasts, singing, and merriment. They called the evening “Cocktails and Karaoke” hoping that an interactive from of entertainment would facilitate bonding between unacquainted friends and family. People began arriving for the champagne “Bubbly Social Hour” as a harpist thumbed Disney songs through the warm summer air. Guests took their seats for the ceremony as family prepared for their procession. Zaid played filler music on his piano. With everyone seated for the “Ceremony of Everlasting Love,” Hannah and Brandon greeted the crowd and requested silence to gather those physically absent. They then recited a poem together “Vow” by Clare Shaw. Their master of ceremony, Winnie Dunn, one of Brandon’s mentors from school, gave a moving speech about Brandon and Hannah’s uniqueness and the treasure they have in each other. Hannah’s best friend, Mollie then sang a song with her romantic buddy about finding true love; for the final chorus, the entire crowd surprised the couple by singing too! Mollie had sent a secret email with the lyrics to their guests beforehand. Brandon and Hannah exchanged their unique vows through tears and laughter. Guests then pledged their support by shining their white light through their upheld hands facing the couple. They gave each other rings, with Brandon’s barely squeezing over his knuckle (and having no chance of ever coming off). Brandon’s younger brother, Brett, gave a toast before inviting everyone inside for dinner. The fresh, local, food was blissfully delicious. Many attested to it being the best food they had ever had a wedding. The dinner closed with a series of toasts from Hannah’s harem, family, and Brandon’s youngest brother. Most folks filed outside to enjoy the perfect summer evening as tables were cleared for the dance floor. An epic dance party ensued. Men loosened their ties and weren drenched with sweat. The dance party closed with “Lean on Me” by Bill Withers. Everyone circled, hands on shoulders, and sang a long. At the song’s end, Brandon and Hannah entered the center of the circle and took a bow to cheers. Then, everyone came in for the hitherto happiest group-hug of their lives. EABride.com

Special touches: At the wedding, our gift to guests was a handmade origami crane placed at each table setting atopa sweet little pile of moss. There is a Japanese tradition of making 1000 cranes for good luck. A thousand cranes of all different colors that were made for Brandon’s grandma were passed on to us and we in turn, shared that good fortune with our friends and family. Out of town guests received wooden berry boxes to hold an assortment of local snacks like Rawxies and specialty teas as well as our homemade “Gud Grabs” of nuts, dried fruits and seeds. Each box was complimented with two sets of bamboo utensils.

As people who work in the wedding business, we know that you can spend months, even years, planning for one day that seems to zip by in an instant. We wanted to be able to savor every moment of it, and to make it last as long as possible. We wanted to be married in a place that felt as powerful as our love and as powerful as time and commitment. We also wanted to create an experience for our guests that gave them a window into the wonderment we had experienced in the past year and allowed them to be swept away in the romance as well. Our love story is also the story of our closest friends and family, for without them, we wouldn’t be who we are today. For these reasons, we chose to get married on the powerful coast of Oregon, upon a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean. We wanted to hear waves crashing upon the rocks as we took our vows, and we wanted the horizon to be our only backdrop.

Before seeing each other, we exchanged letters and read them aloud in front of the camera, then I was off to see my man. The first look was beautiful and Caleb was a mess! I held it together pretty well, only because I knew that if I cracked, there was no going back. It was a beautiful moment, and just as we said hello, the fog began rolling in over the cliff.

Groom’s favorite moment of the day: Out of everything, our first look has to be my favorite. We met on the cliff where we were going to have our ceremony. I was absolutely blown away by how amazing she was. Even as a professional in the wedding industry, I wasn’t quite ready for the magnitude of that moment. She exceeded any hope, dream, or expectation that I may have had. In that moment, it was only her and I, on top of the world. She was and IS the most beautiful bride I have ever seen and I couldn’t think of a better place to experience our commitment. Meeting on the cliff, overlooking the ocean, really set the tone for the rest of the ceremony and celebration to follow. Truly magical! EABride.com

I think our guests really enjoyed the romantic feeling of our ceremony. We wanted the ceremony to be an inclusive and intimate experience for all of us, so at a certain point we did something a little different and opened the floor to anyone who wanted to speak and offer us a word of advice or a blessing, or anything they felt inspired to say. Our parents and siblings came forth and showered us with wisdom and love. We then exchanged our handwritten vows and our rings. We asked everyone to gather around us and for everyone to join hands as we were given a final blessing, said by my father. We then shared our first blissful kiss as husband and wife! We ate our dinner by a beautiful, twinkling cove as we spoke over the crashing waves. We used the large back porch as our dance floor and had our first dance to Seashell Tale by M. Ward. After all the planning and stress, it felt so good to let loose with all of the people who matter most to us. We danced late into the night. Three months later, in our hometown, we held a large reception for our friends and family who weren’t there to celebrate with us in Oregon.

92

Our table decorations contained bottles that had rolled up messages in them. No one actually tried to retrieve them, but if they had, they would have found our favorite love poems handwritten on antique paper. Some of the poems were from famous poets. Others were poems we had written to each other.

Bride’s favorite moment from the day: I think my favorite part of the day would have to be our first dance. The song means so much to us and it is so soft and romantic. For me, it was the point of the day where we finally got to come together and just be there with each other. The rest of the noise and hustle bustle faded away and it was just us, swaying with the ocean waves to our favorite song, finally together as husband and wife. I closed my eyes and our love was so palpable in that moment. I never wanted it to end.

Cody and I met at Indian Creek Community Church when I was leading their College Ministry. We both were very busy and somehow along the way realized that what we were doing wasn’t what we wanted to do with the rest of our lives. Our friendship started with late night conversations aboutwhy life wasn’t satisfying us. As time went on, we both quit those positions and focused on youth ministry. I asked Cody to help lead the College group with me, and we also became very active with the middle and high school youth group. After about 3 months I knew I liked Cody, but he was focused on remaining friends. A year and a half later, we finally started dating. We ended up having multiple heart to heart conversations about what dating meant, looked like, felt like, how we could be the best example to the students we were leading, It took two years of many honest conversations, counseling, break-ups, open heart conversations with mentors and each other, to finally decide we really were in love. Not a mushy fairy tale love, but a true-deep-lasting-selflessforever-love. We wanted to spend our lives together, travel to see the world together, and start a family of our own. We were engaged for nine months and knew we were ready to get married. I have always wanted to have a unique wedding, without all of the traditional aspects: beautiful, stressful, but usually boring. So I started to keep track of things I liked at weddings, and things I didn’t like. I wanted my day to stand out in the sea of weddings people attend, and for guests to remember a grand celebration: a mix between a tea party, a ball, and a picnic in a garden. From traveling in Europe, I knew I wanted the style to be a Victorian mix of English and Parisian with my own vintage favorites thrown in the mix. I love hats, tea, lace gloves, and flowers. I will always remember this speical day and our commitment and vow to always be there for each other no matter what. Our day was made up of countless perfect moments and memories that will be held forever in my heart.

96

His Favorite Moment of the Day: At the risk of sounding cliche, without a doubt, my favorite moment of the wedding was Kathleen’s processional. At that moment, I had my best friend standing beside me, the most important people in my life surrounding me, friends and family from all of the world filling the room, and there was my bride! Her Favorite Moment of the Day: My favorite moment was our recessional,. As we were pronounced “Mr. and Mrs.” for the first time, I held my beautiful bouquet and we both were cheering with everyone else that we were finally married. The guests threw white Queen Anne’s lace flowers and the band began to play our recessional song, “I’ll be there for you”.

Special Touches: I didn’t want to be the only one wearing white, so we incorporated it as much as possible in our wedding colors, even asking the guests to wear white to include them in the wedding day. Instead of a photo booth, we decided it would be fun to have a dress up table for guests to pick out hats and vintage gloves to wear during our tea-themed cocktail hour.
