A Note from the Publisher » Well, I must admit, I was a little extra excited to ring in 2016. It was bittersweet, however, as 2015 proved to be my best year yet. As hope springs eternal for me, I like to think this next year could be even better! And part of that reason is because I suddenly find myself in similar shoes as all of you. When I first started EA Bride, I was already married, so I saw things through the hindsight lens of what I would have done differently. Fortunately, that marriage fell apart so that something so much greater could fall together, and I suddenly find myself engaged once again. And this time, I am armed with a completely new perspective.

Christie Scott Publisher

Whether it be from a five year immersion into the wedding industry, or just finally flagging down the right guy, I suddenly find myself excited about putting all the pieces together. And then in the very same breath, I’m immediately perplexed by all the decisions to be dealt with. I’m in awe of the endless array of options. Finally, I am acutely aware that an organized planner now seems like less of a luxury, and more of a necessity. Simply put, I feel your pain. Seriously, though, I am excited to be walking this journey with my fellow class of 2016 Brides-to-be. I can now see the process more clearly through your eyes, and I hope that keen insight will enable us to deliver even more relevant content that will help you in planning the day you’ve always dreamed of. We are thrilled to bring you our new Spring edition, loaded with a cool collection of Real Weddings, a review of a few Jamaican resorts, information about the Best Bridal Show to hit the city, and some of springs hottest flower combinations, all designed by some of the best in the floral business! And as always, we love your input. If there’s something you love or something you’d like to see more of, don’t hesitate to drop us a line. We’re all ears, and love hearing your feedback! In the meantime, here’s to an outstanding wedding season ahead! And on that note, I better get back to planning… Happy Reading!

UNCOVER YOUR

RADIANT SKIN The months of winter can leave you searching for a breath of fresh air and the desire to feel the warmth of the sun on your skin. The punishment of cold weather you experience is also suffered by your skin, which has been beaten and battered. After months of freezing temperatures and sub-zero wind chills, both you and your damaged skin welcome a sunny sixty-degree day with open arms. Every year it is important to treat your skin to a special rejuvenation at the beginning of spring. Cold temperatures make your skin dry, cracked, and flaky. And with your wedding approaching, there has never been a more important time to ensure that your skin is hydrated and glowing. We met with our friends at Spa on Penn to discuss some of the treatments they recommend to ensure that you are radiant on your big day.

FOR YOUR FACE Diamond Microdermabrasion

TMR Advanced Facial Treatment

Deluxe Diamond Microdermabrasion Facial Treatment

Collagen 2000 Advanced European Facial Treatment

Diamond tip microdermabrasion removes the outermost layer of skin cells (which takes most of the brunt during the winter months), leading to increased softening and smoothing of skin. A series of 4-6 treatments is recommended for optimal results, but a 30 minute session is all you need to get started.

Apply the Diamond Microdermabrasion facial above that removes the dead skin with the addition of Glycolic Acid to help improve the appearance of fine lines and stimulate cell renewal. You don’t want to only get rid of the damaged skin, but give your new layers a healthy start. This treatment typically takes an hour.

10

The epitome of skin regeneration after winter! This facial includes two types of exfoliation, Korean layering techniques, a freeze-dried collagen mask infused with stem cells, specific massage techniques for enhancing the eye area, electrical iontophoresis, vacuum suction, and massage. All of this culminating into the ultimate ninety minute facial experience!

This European Facial Treatment utilizes several forms of Collagen for an intense skin softening, hydrating, and line smoothing treatment. Pure natural Collagen is compatible with all skin types, as it is the most common protein in the human body. As a natural element, it is responsible for elasticity, moisture retention and skin smoothness. Just one treatment provides your skin with an optimum of moisture, improving the wrinkle profile Biomatrix, which can store moisture 30 times its own weight. Hydration levels are increased to 180% during this hour-long treatment.

FOR YOUR BODY Shine, Glow & Flow

Enjoy an entire body exfoliation, using sea salts blended with aromatherapy and organic oils, combining a relaxing massage with flowing Swedish strokes.

Lightstim Therapy

LightStim uses LED light therapy to deliver light energy in a similar way plants absorb light energy from the sun. LightStim emits UV-free, beneficial light rays that energize cells and stimulate the body’s natural process to build new proteins and regenerate cells.

French Red Clay Mud Wrap

The Sedona and French Red Clay Mud Wrap is the most effective anti-oxidant and anti-aging formulation. This blend purges toxins, leaving the skin soft and re-mineralized with a noticeable glow. Vitamin E, grape seed, bladderwrack, Irish moss, and sage essential oils are infused into Sedona and French red clays, rich in magnesium, vitamins A, B, B12, E, iron, and amino acids. These muds are meant to be massaged onto the body, forming a masque to allow nutrients and anti-oxidants to be absorbed into the skin while detoxifying, hydrating, and healing.

FOR YOUR SCALP Nourishing Vegetarian Miracle Treatment

Deep Restructuring Treatment

Deep and long-lasting nourishment to dehydrated scalp and dry or brittle hair with the use of Acai Oil and Grape Phytoceuticals.

Using Grape Phytoceuticals, the Restructuring Treatment is designed to provide new life to very damaged hair. The treatment uses enriched keratin and hydrolyzed keratin.

FOR YOUR NAILS Manicure

Get your hands exfoliated and a hydrating cuticle treatment to prevent cracking. Top it off with a hand massage and polish.

Pedicure

Have your feet and legs exfoliated while receiving a hydrating cuticle treatment. Remove unwanted calluses, get foot & leg massage and top it off with pretty polish.

Contact Spa on Penn for more information and appointment times to begin skin rejuvenation for your big day. 816.531.8600 or www.spaonpenn.com EABride.com

Blissful Braids by: Traci Morby

Looking for a unique up-do for you or your bridesmaids? Look no further! Licensed hair and makeup stylist Traci Morby has pulled some of the seasons hottest looks for you to see. These braid and up-do combinations are the perfect blend of modern and elegance.

French Braid

This braid includes three sections of hair that are braided together. Hair is gradually added to each section as the braid moves across the head. In this style, a French braid is used to add texture and interest while pulling the hair into a side.

Three Strand Braid

The three-strand braid is the most common braid. This style consists of six traditional braids woven together. This style is great for someone with lots of hair. The braids keep it secure without using a large amount of bobby pins. 20

Fishtail Braid

The fishtail braid is smooth in appearance like a French braid. The fishtail braid divides the hair into two sections instead of three. In this style, a fishtail braid is used to create a half-up formal style.

Fishtail Up-do

In this undo the fishtail braid continues into a bun. The style also has a French braid incorporated on the other side.

Wrapped Ballerina Bun Here is a traditional ballerina bun with a bit of a fun twist. The bun in this style is wrapped in a traditional three-strand braid for a fresh take on a traditional style.

Multiple Braid Up-do This up-do is full of texture with two types of braids and curls. A fishtail braid runs alongside a Dutch braid for a crown affect. The two braids meet in a bun of curls. Photos by: LowGear Photography

Real Life INSIGHTS

Wedding Branding After deciding upon a theme or look for your wedding, you then want to consult with a wedding branding consultant or learn what it will take to make the magic happen yourself. Wedding branding is simply the process of carrying a chosen look throughout the wedding; from the invites to the place cards to the table arrangements. Like a business brand, you are branding your wedding. Here are some items that will need to be chosen to establish your wedding brand:

Colors: decide on a color palette for the wedding. Simply one or two colors won’t do. You need to pick 4-5 colors total with 2-3 main colors and a few additional colors for accenting. These colors will be used to select the bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen tie color, flowers, invitation colors, linens, and much more throughout the planning process.

Font: select 2-3 different fonts to use on all of your paper materials. The first needs to be a script font; the two secondary fonts need to be basic fonts. These fonts will be used on all of your paper materials for the wedding: invitation, program, menu card, place card, etc. Voice: decide what type of voice you want your wedding branding to have and how it relates to your wedding. The three options include: formal, semi-formal, and casual. If your wedding is in a fancy venue with gold-rimmed china, then you want your voice to be formal. If you are hosting your wedding in a barn with handpicked bouquets, you want your voice to be casual. What you choose allows your guests to know the formality of the event from the moment they receive the invitation. 22

Colors

Accent: Watercolor Flowers

Script Font Casual Voice

Accents: selecting a special graphic to go along

with your wedding brand can be an added touch your guests won’t see elsewhere. You can find accents online or have them professionally created. A monogram is an example of an accenting piece. It can be placed on all of the paper products and even cut out by a lighting company to shine on the dance floor. Other examples of accents include gold glitter paper (to line the inside of the invitation envelop or border the bar menu), vintage inspired lace (to serve as runners on the tables and as a backdrop on the invitation) or a beautifully arranged flower wreath (that can be mimicked by a florist to hang behind the ceremony or printed with the guest’s name inside as the place card). The options are endless and available for you to customize either with a graphic designer or to purchase online.

Going Green:

Budget Buster:

Menu cards have been the main way that couples have communicated their chosen reception meal with their guests. At each place setting is a finely printed menu complete with all of the scrumptious foods that are to be served that evening. Each and every time, once the guest has reviewed this card, they throw it to the side and focus their attention elsewhere. The materials and cost that went into printing the menu card has been devoured in less than 10 seconds.

Paying for a wedding, regardless if it is $2,000 or $20,000 should have its benefits. Instead of writing checks to each vendor (who writes checks these days anyways?) or paying with your no-benefit debit card, why not open a “wedding credit card with a provider that rewards activity with points or flyer miles? While we do not recommend charging your wedding to a credit card to pay off in minimum payments later, we do recommend opening an account to take advantage of the benefits you can receive by charging large amounts. Then when you receive the statements in the mail, pay the balance off in full. Southwest Airlines Credit Card is a great alternative for those wanting to take advantage of free flights for their honeymoon. Discover and Chase cards are both great options for cash-back or point rewards. Research available cards to find out which one is best for you then enjoy the perks!

Ditching the Menu Card

Save the environment the waste and yourself the time and money of printing menu cards and instead write the menu on a larger item that can be viewed by all guests. Try a vintage mirror that goes great as an accent piece at the front of the buffet line with the menu listed on it for everyone to read as they wait in line. Or chalkboard paint on an old door with the menu categories within each windowpane. Even easier, print the menu items on a piece of paper and place it in a nice frame. The options of how you display your chosen menu are nearly endless, just an ounce of creativity can save you from printing 250 menu cards that will find their way to the trash all too quickly.

Credit Card Points/ Flyer Miles

DESTINATION SPOTLIGHT :

Grenada

Traveling to the Caribbean will be one of the most relaxing trips you will ever take. After brief research, you’ll notice that the Caribbean is such a vast area, how could you ever pick between the numerous islands and endless resort options? Allow Travel Benefits by Design to help you narrow down your search. Amidst the clear blue seas and the powder sands, you will find a small set of islands tucked in the Caribbean; the islands of Grenada. It is unlike most of the Caribbean, as the majority of the islands are untouched, giving you the experience of a truly natural, lush environment. The State of Grenada is made up of three islands: Grenada, Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Each island has its unique qualities and interests. Stay on one or travel to all three to indulge yourself in true island living. Bouquet Arranged by: Blue Bouquet

Fruity Foliage Fruit and other foods are commonly overlooked as contents in a bouquet but they add a special sweetness to the display, color and texture. They can be set as the focal piece as the grapes have been displayed in this arrangement or you can make a more subtle statement by sparingly placing small accent fruits like berries or cherries amidst larger blooms.

Bouquet Arranged by: Studio Dan Meiners

Vivid Blossoms A statement bouquet is the perfect accessory when paired with an elegant gown with minimal detailing. The bright blooms bring the chosen wedding colors to life in a vibrant and breathtaking way. Various textures are added by incorporating different types of flowers like the elegant yellow ranunculus with the exotic white and green lady slipper orchid.

32

Bouquet Arranged by: Hitched Planning + Floral

Green Gatherings Some weddings opt for a color palate of neutral tones, eliminating the need for bright, colorful flowers. The natural look of the greens shown above has been arranged into a contemporary bouquet. The rustic and earthy elements are the perfect blend with accent pieces, small and large. Due to all of the components being the same color, it is important to create a focal piece, similar to this xerographica air plant.

Wreath Arranged by: Craig Sole Designs

Ornamented Wreaths Flowers offer endless possibilities including out-of-the-box ideas like a cascading wreath or a stunning headpiece. Using different types of flowers creates a beautiful palate that accentuates the colors of the wedding. These unique ideas can be used exclusively as photo props and later re-purposed to decorate an area of the reception, or kept on for a full-days use.

34

Bouquet Arranged by: Good Earth Floral Design Studio

Incomparable Collections As one of the hottest trends of the year, the handpicked bouquet is the perfect blend of color, style, and diversity. The collection of flowers and greenery are customized to taste and eliminate the chance of any two bouquets looking the same. It is easy to add both bold and soft touches as seen above with the two red proteas and the surrounding light-blue dusty miller.

Ask

the expert By: Rachel Adams

Q: We are in the early stages of planning our wedding and trying to handle the finances properly. Our wedding is being paid for in three parts- each side of our families are gifting us some money and we will be paying the difference. Should we deposit the gifted money into our own account, have our parents pay the vendors directly, or create a separate wedding checking account? A: This is really more of a personal preference; but from a financial standpoint, creating a separate wedding checking account would streamline the process, and enable you to stay on track with your wedding budget.

Q: One of our first goals after the wedding is to tackle some debt. What are some guidelines we can follow to prioritize which debt we should pay off first? Should we tackle them one by one or pay smaller amounts on several at the same time? A: When you’re tackling debt there are a number of factors to consider: interest rate (credit cards), student loans (interest rates can be tiered based on time frame), and your mortgage. Keep in mind that not all debt is bad debt, and your mortgage can be viewed as good debt (on case by case basis; once again there are a variety of factors to consider). Remember your home is a long term investment, and there is potential to utilize it as an asset to your financial well-being. It doesn’t have to be burden.

36

Harrison Capital Management 913-827-4588 www.harrisoncapitalmanagement.com rachel@harrisoncapitalmanagement.com

Q: After being engaged for a few months and combining our accounts, I have found out that my fiancé is much more of a spender than what I was previously aware. What is the best way to balance finances when one person is a spender and the other is a saver? A: Understanding your individual spending patterns is key to a successful financial future, and often the most overlooked. Before you decide to combine your finances, it is crucial to identify how your partner views money. Are they a spender or a saver? Do they have a tendency to live beyond their means? How many credit cards do they have, and what is their debt ratio on those cards? In an effort to remedy the situation, have a conversation with your fiancé, and express your concerns while offering a solution: keep your joint account for bills, but create a personal account for each of you designated for discretionary spending.

Q: My fiancé and I have been trying to decide the best way to handle our money as we start our lives together. From what we have read, there are three options; we can keep our money in separate accounts entirely, create a joint account for bills with each of us keeping a personal account, or combining our accounts completely. What do you recommend? A: Finding a partner to share your life with is something to be celebrated, you’ve found that person to grow old with, to share all of life’s wonderful moments together, and also with whom you can weather the storms. You’re embarking on this new journey together, and it is no longer “my money”, but it’s “our money.” Which sounds easy, but realistically this is a significant change from what you’ve probably grown accustomed to; with the culture celebrating the independent woman, successful woman who is capable of taking care of herself and takes pride in that fact. (Which she should!) With that in mind, for newlywed couples, the second method seems to be favored with a higher success rate: create a joint account for bills with each of you keeping a personal account for discretionary spending money. The only thing I would add to that is to create a joint savings account, establish an emergency fund with savings to cover 3 months of all living expenses.

Q: My parent’s marriage ended in part due to lack of communication about money and spending. I am terrified of this happening in my own marriage and want to be proactive on keeping the lines of communication open. What are some different ways my fiancé and I can avoid money being a problem in our marriage? A: Regular communication on this topic of money and spending needs to be established as a priority from the start. Set aside time quarterly (more or less depending on what you’re both comfortable with) to have that conversation: Have any of our goals & objectives changed? (Children, buying a home, saving for college, saving for a new car, saving for a trip to Europe) Establish what those goals and objectives are and go from there. If you’re not in agreement on a certain topic, it could be beneficial to get a third party opinion, someone you trust, perhaps a financial professional to help you make a well informed decision.

Wedding Wise Planning your wedding is fun and you want to share it with family and friends, but sometimes having an “entourage” along can become very stressful. When shopping for your bridal gown, it is better to have a small group of very special people (4-5 max). You can become overwhelmed and lose control over the number of gowns, styles and price points that the group wants you to try. It is much more relaxing to have a small group that is supporting you and not trying to control the appointment. - Geri Watts, Wedding Expressions by Geri If you have a dream, don’t let others (especially your vendors) dissuade you from what you want to do. Instead find one of the many fantastic vendors out there that is willing to work with you to make your dream exactly what you wanted and make your wedding YOURS!” -Alan Berry, Berry Acres

Don’t put off booking your event. The reputable bartending services book many months in advance. Look for a service that has a large roster of employees to pull from. There could always be that last minute illness or accident. You need to make sure they would have another employee to send if that were the case. -Mary Rodriguez, Diamond Girls Bartenders

Cushion your timeline - even though something that you think will only take “a minute” might not. When things run behind - it is the picture taking timeline that gets cut. Set a decent amount of time aside for photography of just you and your groom - your photos will be your memories of your special day. - Janine McDonald Perfect Timing Portraits

I like to view each wedding as a major motion picture and I encourage you to do the same. If you were the producer of a motion picture and it was your one big shot, wouldn’t you want to GO BIG! So hire the best cast and crew. Make sound decisions on who you want to create, customize, and represent you on your big day. You only have one shot, so choose wisely and hire wedding professionals that understand your personality, story, and style. - Jon Bartlett, Remix DJ’s

Carry only one or two credit cards with you on your honeymoon. Leave the rest at home. Contact the credit card companies you will be using prior to leaving to let them know you will be out of the country. This will alert them to unusual usage, but also allow you to use them when needed. Often times a credit card company will not authorize a transaction in your name while in another country unless they have been notified. This is for your protection. -Robert Riesmeyer, Travel Benefits by Design

Traditions are important but there aren’t any rules when planning a wedding. It’s your day! If you want to mingle with guests during the cocktail hour instead of leaving for an hour to take pictures, you can! Make the most of your time with the people celebrating with you. The modern wedding is becoming more personalized to each couple’s personalities. Your guests will thank you for throwing a celebration that feels like “you” and not like every other wedding. -Jillian Murphy, Berg Event Space

Even through the wedding will only last a day, the pictures from that day will last a lifetime. Looking your absolute best is crucial. Even if you think you can handle your own hair and makeup, I still suggest hiring a professional. Someone who specializes in wedding hair will know how to get the exact look you want and make it last all day. Makeup needs to be beautiful in person and photograph well. Plus, being pampered and having one less thing to worry about will be well worth it! -Traci Morby, Traci Morby Styling

Don’t sacrifice wedding day meals! It is imperative that the bride and groom get something to eat, not only the day of the wedding but after the ceremony too! Providing a meal or a snack for the bridal party on the day of the wedding is often over-looked and can lead to scrambling at the last minute. Scheduling a bridal lunch, sending your groomsmen to the hotel breakfast buffet or having something catered for your group are all easy way to insure everyone has something in their stomachs before the big event. –Jessica Retter, The National Golf Club

Make sure to ask your venue the following....

What services are included as part of your package? Many reception sites provide complete packages: catering, cake, staff, tableware and linens, which can be helpful if you love what they offer. Other sites charge a simple rental fee for their space, and leave the rest of the details up to you. To find the option that works best for your wedding, ask yourself how much you would like to personalize your celebration and what that will entail, or decide on a more all-inclusive approach. You’ll also want to ask about what is not included, but may be available. -Lori Glazer, Town Pavilion

Hire professionals, not friends. You wouldn’t go to your friend for a root canal, so I hope you wouldn’t have your friend try to photograph the one day you can never get back in your life. There’s so much more a professional would know and have, like proper equipment and knowledge and understanding of their craft and the in’s and out’s of a wedding. -Jana Marie, Jana Marie Photography

The common misconception of wedding planners is that they take your wedding and plan it they way they want to. That couldn’t be further from the truth! Planners are advisers and experts on everything from budgets to hiring the right professionals. They help you do the “work” so you can enjoy the fun parts of planning a wedding.

Congrats! You just got engaged. Now what? Weddings are a time for reflection. Reflection on your past alone, present as a couple and future as a new blended family. It is important to remember that people will be gathering in honor of you as a couple. Make your day about just that, the couple. After you pick a space you will need to feed your guests and vendors. Choose a caterer that will be flexible, creative and energetic about your day. Catering is a HUGE part of your wedding day and should not be taken lightly. Come prepared with a list of your favorite foods, restaurants and places to go. This will assist the caterer in building the perfect menu for you and your guests. You will leave your guests with a lasting impression that they will cherish with you forever and not to mention a meal that they find truly delish! - Tarah Miller, delish! Catering & Events

Setting Your Table

Most people hold on to their mix-matched, scratched up dinnerware from college for far too long. And while, they may have provided your early twenties with countless dosing’s of Ramen Noodles, it is time to cut the cord and utilize your wedding registry to upgrade your tableware. The difficulty in registering for dinnerware is knowing how much of what item you will need in the future. Use the guidelines below to help round out your registry. Keep in mind that if you enjoy hosting events for large parties, you may want to register for a few more of each item. On the opposite side, if you would rather attend a party than host it yourself, then a few less items may be ideal for you. Either way, a complete set will get you started in the right direction.

The Runaway Flower Girl

Beeing Careful at the Altar

It seems like most, if not all weddings, have that one flower girl that doesn’t feel like cooperating. Right before the ceremony began, one of our flower girls, Autumn, was put down for a nap. Like most children under the age of five, when Autumn woke up, she was confused and slightly cranky. To top it off, at the time, she still wasn’t one hundred percent comfortable around Bryan, which made it that much more interesting. As my dad and I prepared to enter the ceremony, I couldn’t help but die laughing at Autumn and her reaction to the situation. She stood there frozen, with a quivering whine that was borderline a mental breakdown. She’d take a few steps and be fine, but moments later she’d be right back at it again. Autumn managed to make it halfway down the aisle, but soon realized she couldn’t see her mom anymore, and ran out of the ceremony in the opposite direction, crying and screaming. Needless to say, it was the most adorable/funniest moment of the day!- Brittany

I was saying my vows to Brock. A little bee flew up and landed right on my face. I quickly swooshed it away hoping nobody would notice. Of course Brock noticed and was trying not to laugh. The bee came back and landed on my face again. Thankfully he never stung me, he just wanted a front row seat for all the excitement! -Brooke

Oh, This Dress Will Fit...

Wondering Walkways

Minutes before it was time to go to the barn and get ready for the ceremony to start, me and my gorgeous bridesmaids were doing last minute preps in the bridal room. I asked two of them to help pull up my dress one last time as it was strapless and wanted it to be perfect so I wouldn’t have to worry about it. They took their sides and started tugging my dress up and then- POP! The clasp on the back of my dress came completely apart and the bottoms were barely holding together. My dress fit PERFECT….a month before the wedding. I guess I should have stuck to my work out plan that last month, but ice cream just had a way of calming my nerves! I was silent as I was trying not to freak out. They tried safety pinning it, didn’t work. Finally they rigged it up so it looked fine again; I didn’t ask questions I just tried not to move too much so it didn’t come undone again! -Brooke

We decided to get married in a public park. We knew that there would be bystanders and the general public would have access to the park on our wedding day, but didn’t believe that any overlay would occur between our wedding and their Saturday enjoyment. However, when the bride started walking down the long aisle, two elderly women were walking along the walkway and their paths ended up crossing each other. It wasn’t a disastrous moment, but it did bring a smile to our faces as it was completely unexpected. After the paths were avoided, the bride continued her walk down the aisle and the elderly women became admiring bystanders. -Max

Ringing Things the Right Way I forgot to give my brother-in-law my engagement ring to hand us during the ceremony. I had been wearing it all day while getting ready because I was so nervous I would misplace or lose it. When it was time to exchange the rings during the ceremony I realized I was still wearing it! I had to awkwardly take it off so Chase could put on the wedding band. - Ashley

BE ORIGINAL by: Jon Bartlett

Over the last twelve months, there has been one theme that I have heard consistently from the majority of my couples. “We want our wedding to… be original.” This phrase can be both inspirational and daunting. Some couples can be overwhelmed with the fear of replicating certain elements of their friend’s wedding and can be robbed of the joy of planning their own dream wedding day. So in your venture to be original, make sure to be yourself and do whatever it is you want to do.

Remix DJ's 913-440-4905 www.remixdjs.com

To start off our journey, let’s first discover the origin of the phrase - “Be Original”

BE {bee} Verb: + To exist or live + To take place; happen; occur + To occupy a place or position

ORIGINAL {uh-rij-uh-nl} Adjective: + New; fresh; inventive + Arising independently of anything else + Thinking or acting in a creative or individual manner Noun: + An original work as opposed to any copy or imitation + A person whose ways of thinking are original Next let’s dive into the elements of your day that can stand out the most and give you the opportunity to “Be Original”. 54

GRAND ENTRANCE

The grand entrance is a great way to start the party. This is one of the only times in your life that you get the opportunity to be introduced in a big way to a room full of your biggest fans. Even though many people go with the classic approach of including the whole bridal party, some couples choose to have just themselves announced. Really this is your moment, so do exactly what you want. If you want it to just be the two of you, do it. If you want your bridal party to make a tunnel or warm up the crowd with a lip-synced dance routine, do it. There is no wrong way to be introduced.

FIRST DANCE

The first dance is not only a couple’s first opportunity to dance together, but it’s also an opportunity to let your personalities shine. I encourage all of my couples to choose a song that means something to their personal story. Sometimes it’s a great opporunity to search and see if there is a lesser known remix or cover version. It never hurts to get dance classes for a classic styled dance or a crazy mash-up so you feel prepared.

PARENTS DANCES

If you choose to have a special dance with your parents, make sure that the dance mirrors your relationship with your Dad or Mom. For instance, if your relationship with your Dad is more light and fun, either choose a song with a lighter tone or add a fun moment at the end after dancing to a slower more emotional song.

DANCE PARTY

This day is literally the biggest party you will ever throw for yourself, so make sure you get a DJ or band that is able to customize their music set to fit your personality and style. It is imperative that you communicate your goals and your musical style beforehand so your entertainment can set a tone and environment that truly represents you as a couple. The attention should always be focused on you and reflect you properly. If you and your guests are a group of raging dancers, make sure your party is pumping from beginning to end. If you’re a bit more reserved, there is always a way to have some fun but still have more of a lounge setting.

48

LAST SONG

It’s the end of your big night, so make sure you end it with a bang! Even though some couples like the idea of slipping out conspicuously before the last song, it’s honestly better to allow your family and friends to sing that last song to you. Trust me, this will create a moment that you will remember for a long time. When choosing a last song, try and choose a song that has some history and represents you, your family and your friends.

EXIT

There are many ways that you can have your family and friends see you off, so make sure you choose something fun and epic. Here are some of the fun choices I have seen lately: riding off in a classic car, fireworks display, glow-stick tunnel, and paparazzi (camera flash) exit. For more ideas and a peak at our Billboard Top 40 for all of the specific moments of the night, go to remixdjs.com.

THE BLOOM ACADEMY 56

In the spirit of Spring and all of the beautiful blooms that are popping up, we thought you would like a fun floral arranging experience that you can share with your maid-of-honor and bridesmaids. As the hottest workshop for flowers in Kansas City, The Bloom Academy shares the knowledge of Emily Walters, a lover of flowers with the desire to teach others about the ability to enjoy a bloom each and every day, without the need of having to pay for a professional arrangement. With your wedding quickly approaching, we are sure that you have a few uses for flowers in your future. We are not suggesting that you add “create floral centerpieces” to your wedding day to-do list, as we are firm believers in skipping the stress and leaving that task for a professional. However, we do promote a fun day with your closest of friends, sipping on champagne and learning how to make the perfect floral crown you can wear to your bridal shower, rehearsal dinner, or the big day itself.

Friends and Fun at The Bloom Academy

We had to experience The Bloom Academy ourselves, just so we can give you a full insight to all the fun it has to offer (and maybe we were a bit curious on how to make a beautiful flower crown as well). The event started with a casual meet and greet as guests arrived. We joined an event, that was open to the public; however, there are private events available where you can bring your crew and be the only ones in attendance. We enjoyed beverages and appetizers and picked out our personal workspace at the large wood table. Once everyone had arrived, Emily opened with a welcome and began the workshop. She demonstrated the step-bystep process on how to make a flower crown, down to the placement of greenery and how to apply tape correctly. Once she had completed her example crown, we were able to begin working on our own. We started by selecting the flowers we wanted to use and the accompanying greenery.

Then each of us measured our head so that the crown would fit appropriately after it was completed. That’s when the real fun began. We arranged the flowers exactly as we wanted. Some guests made crowns with a heavy flower presence and others included more greenery with small focal flowers. Everyone’s crown came together so well for only being taught in a short amount of time how to construct one. After everyone had finished, we strut our stuff and let the beauty speak for itself. You can treat your girls to a fun evening or book your special event with The Bloom Academy to learn how to make your own beautiful blooms. Visit their website www.thebloomacademy.com for the dates of upcoming workshops and private event information. EABride.com

Advice from the Aisle

We d d i n g W i s d o m f ro m N e w l y w e d s

From the Bride: Don’t sweat the small stuff! Wedding planning comes with a lot of trial and error situations. Not everything is going to go as you planned, so let it go, and move on. A lot of the time, the things you thought you had figured out, end up being the things that go wrong. The true blessing is sooner than later the right thing comes around and it’s more than you could have ever imagined. Don’t forget to enjoy every second! Time flies when you’re having fun, right? Make the most of each situation and cherish all the moments you have with each other and your family and friends. Make time for your fiancé and don’t get too wrapped up in all the wedding details. Go on walks, cuddle, watch Netflix, go get ice cream- DATE EACH OTHER! It’s okay to take a break from wedding stuff, it’s healthy! - Brittany My best advice would be to stay happy through the whole planning process. It goes by so fast, you don’t want to spend it being stressed out or a bridezilla! Stick to your ideas and share them with your fiancé. Don’t let other people change your mind. Let your family help. It’s good to prioritize what is most important to you and start there. Also a good wedding photographer is a must! They are going to capture every part of your day and that will be the memories you get to hold on to forever. If you’re like me and the whole day is a blur, the pictures are so important for you to be able to look back on. - Brooke

60

My biggest advice for anyone in the planning stages; spend the money and hire a day of wedding planner/coordinator. I am telling you they are invaluable. Although I already plan events for a living and planned our entire wedding, I still hired Britney Jones with Plush Productions for my day of coordination. She made my life so much easier, and I was able to chill and actually enjoy our wedding day without having to stress about anything. - Ashley I am pretty laid back so I knew that I had brought the vision I had for my wedding to life. Together, we set everything in motion. My advice to couples is to accept all things, big and small and relax so that the memories can fall into place. - Carrie Take advice from wedding professionals including the on-site coordinator at your reception venue (if they have one). This isn’t their first rodeo. - Riley

From the Couple:

The photographer is the most important vendor of the wedding. If you allow that person to do their job both for what you want and creatively you will be floored at the result. Take time to enjoy a moderately long engagement. We are grateful that we did. As two people who decided to plan our wedding ourselves, it takes time to make all of the plans and enjoy it at the same time. - Kasey & Max

I knew I was in for a treat the moment I stepped off the plane, and into the Sandal’s private airport lounge. We had just landed in Montego Bay, Jamaica. And like a well-oiled machine, staff were everywhere, as though they didn’t want to waste a single opportunity to pamper us the second we landed in their lap of luxury. Although there are 7 Sandal’s properties spanning the island of Jamaica, three of them are found in Montego Bay alone: The Carlyle, Montego Bay, and The Royal Caribbean. Known for their exceptional accommodations, the best part of the plan is their Stay and Play concept. Stay at one of the resorts, but you’re granted full run of all three properties. So, it was only natural that I wanted a sampling of all three! First stop: The Carlyle. Considered the smallest hotel in the Jamaican line, this boutique property boasts a mere 52 rooms and is situated right where city life meets seascape. It is nestled directly across from the beach and steps away from the “Hip Strip,” a bustling mecca of local finds and flavors. The best way to describe this mini-oasis was the island’s version of “Cheers.”

64

The staff treated you more like extended family, and they made a point to not only know your name, but also anticipate your every need. Run by Leighton Josephs, a man whose smile is as warm as the Jamaican sun itself, one interaction with him, and you know why 80-90% of the guests are considered regulars, returning year after year. What they lack in size, they certainly make up for in heart. That was evident from the moment you meet CJ, their resident Playmaker. CJ took it upon himself to make an introduction and get us acclimated and integrated into the hotel culture. And with it being priced significantly below the other two nearby resorts, it is ideal for couples that want to return to paradise on the regular. But, being a self-proclaimed sea worshiper myself, I had a need to get to a beach. And when you’re looking for the best beach in the area, word travels fast as to where you’ll find it.

So, I proudly donned my seaside duffel, boarded the shuttle, and set sail for Sandals: Montego Bay. The moment I stepped off the bus, I was immersed in the foliage, and searching out the source of the sea breeze. Plush, oversized seating areas beckoned me as I passed by, but the pull was too strong. And moments later, I found my way across the soft sand, and face-to-face with some of the most clear, calm, and inviting water I have ever made the acquaintance of. Looking down the shoreline, I saw what I would describe as an adult playground, ripe with cabanas, hammocks, and chairs galore. And void of any of the day-to-day responsibilities we’d all left behind. It was then that I breathed a sigh of pure bliss. At the risk of sounding like a gushing schoolgirl, I must reveal my inner glutton and rave about the restaurants. Few people are pickier than me when it comes to finding fare I would actually write home about. And here I am, salivating about several of the dishes I sampled during my stay. With more than a dozen dining options among the three resorts, I helped myself to everything from Thai to Japanese, English pub food, and even a margherita pizza that I still want more of. With such eclectic offerings, what I thought might be a weight loss opportunity turned into a souvenir six pounds! Midway through our trip, I was anxious to dive deeper into the wedding side of things, so we packed our bags, and headed for the last stop on our list: Sandal’s: Royal Caribbean. With 210 rooms, this resort was a nice mix of the other two. And it even had the bonus of a private island just a short ferry ride away. Under the direction of Mr. Gerald Christ, he is described as a seasoned and competent leader who always goes the extra mile and is nothing less than impressive. And this is evident the moment you see how his resort is run. The grounds were so magnificent, that in some moments, you thought you might be on the set of a movie. You know, the type of film that brings about fairytales, and makes you wish upon a star and never want to leave. Complete with a magical set of swings in the middle of the warm translucent waters. For the first time in quite some time, I truly wanted to savor every second. Perhaps the very best thing we did during our stay was renting ourselves a Sandal’s cabana. Although nearly everything is included in your all-inclusive stay, there are a handful of extras you can spring for, and this one happened to be worth every extra penny.

A Matter of Fact: Endless array of wedding locations to choose from With a 7 night stay, the basic Beautiful Beginnings Wedding fee is waived Wedding Specialists will coordinate around your preferred color palate Room Availability: Carlyle: 52 Rooms Montego Bay: 251 Rooms Royal Caribbean: 210 Rooms They have a world class Red-Lane spa for all of your prep and pampering needs They pay it forward through the Sandals Foundation www.sandalsfoundation.org

65

So much so, we even sprung for a second day. Your very own water-front paradise awaits when you reserve one of these! The moment we arrived at our private cabana, we were greeted by our personal butler. She handed us a cell phone to dial her direct, in case we needed anything outside our immediate reach. We were fortunate enough to be taken care of by Nicole both days, who brought us lunch, had fresh drinks for us before we even realized we needed a refill, and surprised us with an afternoon fruit and cheese tray. Lets suffice it to say, it was so perfect that I woke up from a nap somewhat upset that I missed out on savoring even a second of the experience while I was asleep. So perfect, perhaps, that even my own boyfriend couldn’t take the romantic irony of it all, and popped the question right then and there! (Let the record state, I said yes!!) And suddenly, there I was, with weddings on my mind. And I just happened to be right in the middle of my very own little rom-com, delighted at the thought of doing a destination type of thing myself. I wanted to know more. So, true to my nature, I worked my way over to the wedding office, questions in hand. Fortunately, I was immediately connected to Rochelle Forbes and Tannif Turner, who thought nothing of spending the morning with me, daydreaming and discussing all things wedding. 66

As it turns out, these are very seasoned event specialists, as this resort alone has onsite: two wedding planners, two wedding captains, and a wedding steward. And although they can crank out an impressive average of 30 weddings every month, and as many as 60 during high season, each one of them are customized to the couple, so it never feels impersonal. As Turner put it, “We are a luxury brand. We’re game changers. All of our locations are unique, with staff that is passionate and dedicated. Your experience is not a one size fits all, but rather tailored to each couple.” This experience starts at the core, in the training of their staff. The highest standard of hospitality is present in every interaction, as that is paramount among everyone, from the General Manager to the gardeners. According to Forbes, “Sandals is big on growth development. On-the-job training really grows our company. We’ve always been trendsetters in terms of staying a step ahead of the curve.”

And just to be sure Sandal’s really delivered on their promise, I was fortunate enough to get directly to the source itself. I just so happened to run across an uber cute, hipster couple who just happened to be hanging out on their honeymoon, after having just exchanged their vows there a few days prior. Riston and Travis Schifko were planning to get married elsewhere, when a sudden change of plans shifted them to the Royal Caribbean instead. “Although it wasn’t our initial plan, it was as though fate intervened and brought us where we were meant to be. And we were totally blown away by how above and beyond everyone went to make our stay perfect,” said Riston. In fact, 36 guests followed them to the island to watch them exchange vows with one another. And as Travis assured me, “I think it’s safe to say at least 34 of the 36 will be back for vacation!”

Those sounded like pretty good odds to me. And in the end, as if it weren’t hard enough to leave in the first place, a little bird left a note under our door, beckoning us with offers to check out their other properties, with super sweet rates to boot. I admit it. I’m officially hooked on the Sandal’s experience. Simply put, I will be back!

Brock & Brooke’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

sedalia, mo

The story and spark that began our life together, started with a high and tight haircut, a G-Shock watch, and a horrible pick up line. To start off, the butterflies were not there, no halo was above anyone’s head, and it was not a fairy tale beginning. In fact, the story was full of young love, sweet memories, and reckless moments. I remember it like it was Déjà Vu when we first met. Of course, that was the name if the nightclub we laid eyes on each other. It was June of 2011. I was nineteen years old and fresh out of Basic Training and Advance Individual Training for the Missouri National Guard. I was in top shape, handsome as ever, in my favorite flannel; and she was eighteen, a city girl in heels, looking like an angel. With neither of us knowing or meeting each other in the past, it was a brief, yet bittersweet moment when we did. It was an ordinary Thursday night with my friends. We were out for an evening of comedy and dancing. I wasn’t there to find the love of my life. As we got done with the comedy show, we stumbled downstairs and outside to the patio to have a drink. It was my turn to fill the cups, that’s when I walked inside the club and saw her. The lights were flashing down, shining directly on her, the music was going with every step she took. My eyes locked onto her, I threw the cups away, and cleared my throat to say something as she walked off the dance floor. As she started walking my way, I was contemplating on what to say, before I knew it, she was two steps behind me. I began to turn around to look back, and that’s when she said it to me, “Hey, nice G-Shock”. With my head in a daze, I blurted out, “Thanks, you’re the girl of my dreams.” The following Thursday, my friend and I returned to the same place, of course in my other favorite flannel. My friends grabbed a table and sat down. I was right behind them walking to the table as I glanced at a few tables down. I took at slight right and skipped over my friends table and sat down with a couple of girls. As I sat down, I got the same look any other guy that randomly sits down at a table full of girls would get, “who is this creep?”. What caught my attention in the first place wasn’t the table full of girls, but the one girl. Again, she was the first one to speak, “You’re the guy with the G-Shock!” I looked down at my watch, smiled, and said in a much more confident voice, “Yes! My name is Brock, and you’re the girl of my dreams from last week.” I was dazed and confused when she laughed. She loved it and told me her name was Brooke. Since that night we began to hang out more often, stayed up many late nights on the phone together while I was at training, spent holidays together, moved in together, and even got the same job. We adopted our first dog as a couple, Bailey. We have been together since December 31, 2011 at 11:59pm. I asked her then if I could start calling her my girlfriend. As years pasted, we got closer and closer together, we moved back to my roots in California, Missouri. I ask her at my family’s farm to be my wife on May 17th, 2014. We got married a little over a year later on September 12, 2015. From the moment I saw her, she was always the one to me. I love her with all my heart, and she will always be my best friend. 72

My favorite part of the day was seeing my best friend, and future wife at that moment when she walked out of the barn with an umbrella that her mom made to cover her face. When the doors came open, I cried. She looked beautiful and gorgeous all around. I realized as she was walking to me that I used to call her mine before that day, but after that day we held hands at the isle, she would be mine forever, as my wife and my best friend.

My favorite moment was when I saw Brock’s face when I walked down the aisle. I spent all morning trying to control my anxiety and stress that everything was going to go right. I couldn’t stop wondering what he was thinking or if he would like my dress. I made it to the aisle and looked up. Once I saw his face everyone else seemed to disappear. It was just my dad holding my hand and Brock. All the stress just lifted off my shoulders. The anxiety was gone. Everything seemed so much better in that moment. EABride.com 73

Chase & Ashley’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

As cheesy as it sounds; Chase and I are actually high school sweethearts. We met when I was a freshman and he was a junior. We quickly fell for each other and were together throughout the rest of his high school years. After Chase graduated, he moved to Florida for college and we tried hard to make it work but with the long distance and time spent away from each other, we decided to call it quits. Chase and I grew up on the same lake and have the same group of close friends so over the years we would run into each other often when he or I were back in Kansas City. It wasn’t until 2009 when he and I both graduated college and moved back to Kansas City that we officially reconnected. After having some beers with friends one night we instantly hit it off… again. We picked right back up where we had left off so many years ago. As they say, the rest is history! Chase and I were together for another five years before he asked me to marry him. We love snowboarding in Colorado and take a trip every year to Vail for Christmas and New Year’s. He thought I would be expecting it so he waited until after Christmas Day to pop the question. Everyone argues that since we had been together for so long, I had to have known it was coming. In all actuality I had no idea. I obviously knew it was going to happen eventually, but definitely not in that moment. I had so much fun planning our wedding. I work for a large corporate hotel chain in downtown Kansas City and have been doing special events for many years. I sell the hotel space for a ton of different corporate, non-profit fundraising events and weddings and I was excited to use all of my knowledge and colleagues in the industry to create my wedding vision. I am super OCD so I planned and designed everything myself. My vision fell into place when I visited the Rumely Tractor Building in the West Bottoms. We discovered that not only could we utilize their incredibly beautiful event space, but that we could also shut down 12th street and under the 12th street Bridge. The idea’s and inspiration took off from there and led me to planning our wedding ceremony on the original cobblestone underneath the bridge, a cocktail hour in the street, the wedding reception inside the Rumely followed by a block party outside with a food truck, airstream trailer photo booth, lawn games, flaming hula hoop performance and a full on DJ’d dance party under the bridge. Everything about our wedding day and night was absolutely perfect. There were so many vendors that I pieced together to make it all happen and I owe a lot to them for being so incredible to work with and accommodating my needs along the way. We had multiple people come up to tell us that it was the best and most unique wedding they had ever been to which is exactly what I was going for.

The morning of my wedding I went for a run with my mom around downtown and we ended up at Liberty Memorial. My grandpa was a veteran and we both had a moment because we knew he was there with us in spirit. I will never forget that moment. I had wrapped charms on my bouquet with pictures of my grandfather to carry with me down the aisle.

My favorite moment from the full day, was the moment we shared at our first look. Seeing Ashley in her dress for the first time was a very magical moment.

I can’t pick just one moment that stood out to me as my favorite. The whole day was so amazing. The overall energy and love that was felt throughout the entire day and evening really warmed my heart. Everyone was so happy that night and you could truly feel it. ridesNov2014.indd 1

Kasey & Max’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

Kasey and I met when I was a barista inside of a mall in Denver. I made her coffee for a year and a half before the retail store she worked for moved her to a different location. Eventually, the new store manager offered me a position as her assistant manager (which was great because I could then have one job instead of two), which I accepted. Kasey and I reconnected while helping with other stores. Kasey was working on opening a new location when I was directed to help. When I walked into the store I was initially given the task of sorting jewelry. She was the head honcho of the store that was opening and told me that instead of messing with the jewelry, I was to help her fold down tables instead. A few weeks later, while I continued to help out the store for the opening, she asked me for my phone number. As the next couple of weeks passed, I had made an impression. One night I started receiving random hairless dwarf cat picture messages on my phone. I had no idea who was sending them to me. I didn’t realize she was trying to get my attention, but it was a unique approach. After a few dates, we were head over heels. We dated for six months before she asked me to marry her. We had had a wild night at a friend’s birthday party which ended in a proposal from her. I told her that we had had too much to drink and if it were the first words out of her in the morning we would talk about it. Sure enough, the next morning she asked again. I talked to her parents about the engagement first and then planted a ring on the bathroom vanity. When we were initially engaged we lived in Denver, but had decided that we would get married in Kansas City. The first thing that came to mind was the always-classic wedding at Loose Park. Four months later we booked Sunday September 13th to be the big day. Instead of deciding on a specific theme or look, we decided our wedding would be a showing of our creative selves in our choices for ultimate design. We stayed in separate places the night before the wedding. The morning of the wedding, I immediately went to Loose Park to help my friends set up and to greet the family. Meanwhile, Kasey was finalizing hair and make-up. She arrived at the aisle and got out of the car to make her way to our friends and family. After the ceremony we left to meet our photographer. Somewhere between there and the reception we had brunch at West Side Local. We spent hours being photographed in various places around the city and finally made it to our reception in the evening. And on to the big party it was.

My favorite part of the day was watching Kasey’s very, very long walk down the aisle towards me. It is a moment I will never forget. I also enjoyed all of the time we spent together being photographed. It was just the two of us and our photographer, which made it more of an intimate experience.

Ryan & Carrie’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

dominican republic

Timing was very important! A mutual friend had tried to introduce us over the period of years and neither of us pursued the opportunity. In December of 2009, I went to a birthday party at Tomfooleries with our mutual friend that had been trying to play match maker. Ryan showed up with his friends and so the time had come that we would finally meet. As the evening continued, the birthday boy realized the fun of the evening wasn’t going to leave him feeling well enough to go to the next day’s Chiefs game. He offered the tickets to our table and Ryan grabbed them up. Then, he asked me to go on our first date to the game with him. It turned out being a long date; complete with tailgating, the game and dinner on the boulevard afterwards. After years of dodging meeting each other, we couldn’t have been more comfortable and excited to be in each others company. After dating for quite some time, Ryan decided to plan a trip to California. We flew into Oakland, rented a car and drove through Napa Valley, and then continued down the highway to stay in Monterey & Carmel. He waited until the last night to pop the question during a romantic dinner in Carmel. He had plenty of great opportunities to ask, including Big Sur and Pebble Beach, but he waited until the last night. By this time in the trip, I had gotten over the thought that he might propose. So when the question came, I was speechlessly surprised. While it was a destination wedding, I still wanted it to have personal touches & style. I am a Interior Designer, so I care a lot about details and photography. We traveled with suitcases of our items to have at reception tables to make the reception our own. The day finally came and ran incredibly smoothly. I got my hair and makeup done in the salon and had private wedding suite to get ready. Guests that had traveled to spend the day with us came to visit me in the morning and we enjoyed mimosas. Though I wanted a simple destination wedding, I did not want it to look too “resort” in our pictures. After Ryan and I had our first look moment, we headed out on the beach with our photographer to catch some beautiful pictures. It was extremely humid that day and Ryan was a trooper in his suit. We freshened up a bit and the ceremony took place in the afternoon. Cocktail hour with hor dourves and a sit down dinner reception by the pool followed the ceremony. The rest of the evening we spent dancing pool-side. Our late-night entertainment included dancing fire throwers. They were a special treat for all of the guests!

The wedding day was great! It was so amazing to have close friends & family come together for a vacation. We hung out together at the pool, beach, bars, ate meals together. All of the guests got to know each other very well and understand how meaningful they each were to Ryan and I. As a “thank you” to everyone for making the trip we rented a catamaran boat one day. 88

special pieces During the engagement, my mom and I went on a candle hunt together! We had a great time (and created a special memory) looking for gold and silver candles at craft and home stores around town. The night of the reception, over a hundred candles were illuminated to bring a special flicker to the room. I have a love for pizza so we offered guests assorted flatbreads as a late night snack along with popcorn which is a favorite food of Austin’s.

Austin & Laurie’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

kansas city, mo

Austin and I met in November of 2010 at a friend’s apartment. Austin and I began talking, had a lot in common, and come to find out we were both from Des Moines, Iowa. We never knew one another but after playing the “name game” we found we knew many mutual people. We were inseparable that night and diverted from our group of friends to go bowling together. Shortly after that night we went on our first date to Kona. We proceeded to date for nearly four years before becoming engaged. A cold winter night in December of 2013, I was planning to be working at an event (I’m the Private Events Director for the Kansas City Power & Light District). It was a big event with a lot of moving parts. The event got up and running and during the course of the evening my boss prompted that we go to Maker’s Mark. Low and behold Austin was standing in the doorway and said he had a limo lights tour scheduled and that he had ran it by my boss so that I could be gone for a while and return back to work momentarily. Austin loves to plan surprises, so he,whisked me away and off we went. We popped a bottle of champagne and began talking and admiring the holiday lights around town. The limo proceeded to stop by Crown Center and Austin suggested we get out to look closer at the tree. I obliged and it was then that Austin got down on one knee. After a few minutes both of our families ran out from a second limo and had witnessed the entire proposal. I was in complete shock. It was truly a beautiful and memorable moment. We all went back to the limo and toasted to our engagement. My boss met us back at Makers Mark and was kind enough to take over my event for the evening. I suggested that we go bowling as that was what we had done the first night we met. The group was on board and as we walked into the space our friends were there, many of whom traveled in from out of town to be there. Yet another moment of complete surprise! I felt so appreciative of the thought and planning Austin had done to make the proposal so special. It was amazing to have our families and friends there to share in our joy with us. Time goes by so quickly and we wanted to savor the moments that we were experiencing together rather than to immediately dive into wedding planning mode. We gave it a couple weeks and by Christmas we had a date set, April 11th, 2015. While not weddings, planning corporate and social events is what I do for a living so I have to say this made the planning process much smoother. We also knew right away that we wanted our reception to take place at The Gallery. My style is modern traditional and so it was a perfect match. The next element within the details of how the reception space was going to look was securing an acrylic candle box that suspends from the ceiling-a dramatic eye catching statement piece. This was the perfect piece for big impact and romantic feeling that I was striving for. From there, candle additions on the guest tables and throughout the space evolved along with incorporating metallics. I love gold and silver together. Touches of gold and silver were then incorporated together using pillows we placed on white lounge furniture, candle details, and ribbon around the bridal bouquets, cake, and cocktail tables.

Bryan & Brittany’s LOVE

STORY

L O C AT I O N

leavenworth, ks

It all started one day while Bryan was working out in his basement. As he stopped for a drink, he noticed his sister’s dance team poster that had the most beautiful girl he had ever seen on it. He ran upstairs and insisted to his sister that she introduce him to this girl as soon as possible. Without hesitation, his sister made it clear that Brittany wouldn’t be interested and already had a boyfriend. To which Bryan immediately responded, “Tell them to break up! We’re getting married!” From then on, he made sure to attend every one of his sister’s dance performances in hopes that Brittany would notice him. After a year of endless attempts to get her attention, Brittany transferred schools and he never got a chance to meet her. A year later Bryan was looking for a job, and his sister mentioned Hallbrook Country Club was hiring and Brittany worked there. He applied that day, and got hired on the spot. Preparing for his first shift, management informed me that him that Brittany would be conducting his training and he became really nervous. It was official- Bryan had finally met the girl of his dreams. After dating for some time, Bryan decided that it was time to pop the question. After some diligent preparations, an evening was planned on the Plaza. Bryan and Brittany enjoyed a delightful meal at Houston’s. Before departing, Bryan explained to Brittany that he wanted to order some dessert to-go for both of them (despite her craving for some chocolate gelato from somewhere else). Little did Brittany know that Bryan had pre-ordered her favorite cupcake from Cupcake A La Mode with the question “Marry Me?” on top. The second cupcake box contained an engagement ring. We walked to the J.C. Nichols Fountain and picked out a picnic table to enjoy our dessert. All the while, a short distance away was a stone wall where both of their families were hiding. Brittany opened her cupcake box to find the “Marry Me?” note adorned on the top. She looked up to find Bryan on one knee, holding the engagement ring that had been in the other box. She was so stunned that Bryan ended up asking her to marry him twice, before she came to in a crying, laughing combination and exclaimed, “Yes!” After the proposal, wedding planning began immediately. Brittany has a love of orchestrating events and being organized - this was right up her alley. Together, Bryan and Brittany planned a wedding with a breathtaking view of the countryside and a peaceful ceremony under a canopy of beautiful summer trees. The months leading up to the wedding they worked on personalized do-it-yourself projects such as the guest book, signature cupcake signs, and a photo string that illustrated photos of them throughout their relationship. The wedding day arrived and after getting ready with their friends and family, Bryan and Brittany met for the first time on their wedding day for a first look, the most intimate moment of the day before saying “I do’s” and celebrating with family and friends. My favorite part of the wedding was seeing Bryan for the first time. We did a “first look” in the park where the ceremony was held. Our photographers placed Bryan at the end of the aisle facing the opposite direction, and had me walk up behind, to meet him. Right before he turned around all I could think about was how happy I was and how all the nervousness and butterflies I had felt leading up to this moment, had gone away. When he turned around I couldn’t stop smiling! He looked so handsome and I was so happy we were finally together!
