Annual Report

2013-2014

President’s report 2013-2014 A year in which EAGE narrowed the gaps I am delighted to report that our Association made good progress in line with my presidential theme of ‘Making a difference on a global scale – narrowing the gap’. EAGE membership has continued to grow. As of June, we had more than 17,000 members, an all-time high. Our student membership has also grown, but only 18% of these members were women. One of my key priorities was to encourage more women to participate in EAGE activities and business. The launch of the ‘Women in Geoscience’ session at the 75th Annual Meeting in London, attended by 65 women, was a great beginning. In October 2013 we established the Women in Geoscience and Engineering Special Interest Community (WGE SIC) focusing on communication and participation in EAGE activities. A very positive sign are the more than 300 members who joined the LinkedIn group, in just six months. The new EAGE Young Professional (YP) Community also gained traction with 156 members participating in its LinkedIn group since its creation in November 2013. EAGE members aged under 35 are encouraged to join the YP network, contribute to discussions, and learn about upcoming opportunities in EAGE’s activities. A notable success in meeting the needs within this community was our second Geophysics Boot Camp in Emlichheim, Germany. As my predecessors, I worked with sister and local societies exploring where our Association can make a difference on narrowing gaps, particularly in Latin America, Asia and Africa. This resulted in a number of exciting collaborations with SPE, SEG and AAPG. For example an SEG/EAGE Summer Research Workshop and a Second EAGE/SPE/AAPG Shale Gas Workshop in the Middle East were planned for the second half of 2014. We continue joining efforts with associated societies to further develop the careers of our colleagues in different countries. Five new MOUs have been signed including International association of Engineering geologist and Asociación Mexicana de Geologos Petrolero among them. Scientists and engineers have also formed the first EAGE Local Chapters in China and Kuwait, providing an increasing range of services for our expanding membership. This last year we also began to take social media more seriously as a way of communicating with members and stimulating increased participation in our activities. In addition to a LinkedIn and Facebook page, there is now an EAGE YouTube channel. A number of e-lectures have been recorded and are available on this channel. A mobile app was launched during our Annual Meeting in London last year and was offered again during Amsterdam ‘14.

Our publications department and the Bookshop continued to thrive and enjoy increasing respect and authority in the geoscience and related professional communities. As ever this was as much as anything thanks to the work of our editors, editorial boards, and outside reviewers, who devote their valuable time to make this possible and for which EAGE owes its gratitude. This year, as part of our global reach, we established an office in Curaçao to serve the Americas. We also launched Geociencias Aplicadas Latinoamericanas for the publication of primary research in applied geoscience disciplines with the focus on Latin America. The EAGE Education Tours (EET) continue to be very successful and are available in many regions. Last year six Education Tours were conducted in 44 locations. Attendee evaluations have consistently been excellent, proving that the education programs meet the needs of our members. Our Education Days continued to be part of the geoscience community calendar, delivering a total of 26 courses in various locations. Working with local societies, I was particularly excited to have Buenos Aires in my native Argentina added to our locations, as the first Education Day in Latin America was realized, adding another realization of ‘narrowing the gap’ in our global service to members. With this continuing growth and impact in the geoscience community I believe that EAGE began a new chapter strengthening its basis for sustainability in 2013-14, and I am pleased to have contributed to this. I can also say that the Association remains in good stead financially with adequate resources to continue its stated strategy. I have passed the presidency to Philip Ringrose, whom I am confident will continue to further the strategy we as a Board have been pursuing in the interests of our members. I had the pleasure of working with an integrated, effective, innovative and engaged Board, and I must thank them all for their contribution. Finally I would like to thank all our members for their volunteering work and knowledge transfer, our hardworking office staff at HQ and in the regions, and our sponsors for their support of the Association and its continuing success. I very much appreciate the opportunity which members gave me to lead our Association and hopefully inspire the organization and its members to ‘Make a difference on a global scale – narrowing the gaps’.

EAGE Annual Report 2013-2014

President’s Preview 2014-2015 Moving towards a sustainable profile As incoming president I look forward to building upon the achievements of my predecessor Gladys Gonzales in growing the global presence of the Association. A key priority for the Board in the coming year will be to ensure that this expansion in membership and activities around the world is sustainable. We know that a frustrating number of geoscience professionals join the EAGE but then allow their membership to lapse. Therefore we must ensure that we not only offer our members value for money, but a programme and benefits that can enrich their professional lives throughout their careers. I believe we already have a strong base from which to work, offering members a wide range of professional learning opportunities; topical conferences and workshops a highly acclaimed portfolio of specialist publications, as well as access to a large databank of scientific research. There is always room to improve, for example, by making our events as geographically accessible and relevant as possible. In this regard the establishment of offices in strategic locations around the world has proved to be a far-sighted initiative. It allows us to provide events geared to specific regions targeting the technical and operational issues our members are facing. By the same token, I am following the remit of the Board to make continued efforts to grow our Near Surface Geoscience Division for the benefit of the Association as a whole. Currently the Division accounts for about 10% of the membership, but we believe this fraction should increase to around 20-25% in the next five years. Addressing the context for growth is one upon which I am sure the whole Association can agree, namely our responsibility as geoscientists to intensify our focus on the sustainable use of the Earth and addressing the climate change challenge. On behalf of the Association, the Board has already sanctioned several small initiatives to lessen our carbon footprint and

to contribute to more sustainable technologies in developing countries, via use of the EAGE Green Fund. However, there are bigger issues at stake – we cannot just be concerned with getting oil and gas out of the ground and must widen our horizons to devote more attention to sustainable Earth sciences. The relatively new “Sustainable Earth Science” Conference series is a key part of this strategy. We will continue to facilitate an open and interdisciplinary discussion within the Divisions of our Association and aim to avoid a ‘silo-ed’ approach to these major questions affecting our global future. By following this strategy – geoscience for energy and the environment – we will develop a much firmer foundation for maintaining EAGE as a socially-relevant professional body. This is especially important if we are to attract new generations of geoscientists and engineers who have to start their careers aware of the environmental challenges we face and will appreciative of the opportunity to address them. I appreciate that with only one year office, these aims may be over-ambitious. I will, however, regard the coming year as a success if the EAGE can continue on the path of sustainable expansion of both our membership and the services we provide. This includes sound fiscal and resource management, carefully reviewing our commitments, and being ever watchful of the volatility of the world economy and the industries in which our members are involved. I will be particularly pleased if the Association can also be seen to be playing a leadership role in the promotion of sustainable Earth strategies and passing that enthusiasm on to bright young scientists considering a career in our professional domains. It remains to say that I very much look forward to working with you, the members, our incredible team of volunteers, the Board and our dedicated staff around the world.

About EAGE Board

Head Office

Every year in spring, the members of EAGE elect the new EAGE Board. The new Board is presented during EAGE’s annual conference & exhibition. The EAGE Board consists of 10 professionals in various fields with an academic and / or industry background. The EAGE Board plays an important advisory role in the activities that EAGE offers throughout the year. New in the 2014-2015 Board are Chris Ward and Valentina Socco. We would like to thank our Board members of 2013-2014 for their valuable contribution to EAGE and wish the new Board members all the best in their new position. For a presentation of the current Board members, visit the EAGE website (www.eage.org).

The EAGE head office is based in Houten, the Netherlands. The head office continued to grow throughout 2013 and 2014, with 67 employees in 2013. It is undoubtedly the centre of EAGE’s worldwide network.

Divisional Committees EAGE has two divisions, the Oil and Gas Geoscience Division and the Near Surface Geoscience Division. For both divisions, a committee is in place. The purpose of the Oil and Gas Geoscience Division is to represent and promote the interests of its members and to ensure that each of the Oil and Gas Geoscience disciplines of geophysics, geology and reservoir engineering is adequately represented within EAGE and its functional commit tees. The Near Surface Geoscience Division represents the interests of its members who work in geophysical, geotechnical, environmental, hydrogeological, archaeological and other fields of investigation of the shallow subsurface.

Committees In addition to the Board and Divisional Committees, EAGE also has a number of permanent committees in place. The committees of EAGE consist of professionals from the field advising EAGE about a certain topic, such as the technical programme, education matters, research, membership affairs and more. We would like to thank all volunteers from the committees for their efforts over the past year.

EAGE International Symposium on Seismic from Reservoir Characterization to Production Management in April 2015, the Asia Pacific office continues to grow. To meet EAGE’s commitment to the needs of its members worldwide, EAGE has established a base in the Americas. In the past five years there has been more EAGE activity in this region with visits and presentations, technical short courses and workshops, especially in countries with evolving E&P operations, such as Colombia and Argentina. EAGE has been working closely together with Latin American professional societies and these co-operations have led to various joint workshops – for example, the first EAGE/SBGf Workshop in Rio de Janeiro in November 2013. For these reasons EAGE decided it was appropriate to open a regional Americas office in the capital of Curaçao, Willemstad, which has been fully operational as the EAGE Americas Office since 1 January 2014.

Associated Societies EAGE has close ties with several associated societies worldwide. When the opportunity arises, events will be organized in close co-operation with other societies in order to serve the industry best. The map on page 6 shows the global coverage of the Associated Societies of EAGE. EAGE invites all associated societies to attend EAGE’s Annual Conference & Exhibition to increase their international exposure and promote their activities. Also, events organized by associated societies worldwide are usually attended by a representative of the EAGE staff and/or board. In 2013-2014 EAGE welcomed AMGE, AMGP, IAEG, IGI, UGM as new associated societies.

Sister Societies In line with its strategies for the future, EAGE aims to create more co-operation with its sister societies in order to serve the industry even better. Often a combined effort is made organizing conferences or workshops on a specific topic. There are co-operations with EEGS, The Geological Society of London, PESGB, SEG, SPE, AAPG, SPG, SBGf, EGU and FESM.

Local Chapters EAGE has a number of Local Chapters in various regions. The aim of the Local Chapters is to promote EAGE activities and geosciences in general in a specific area. EAGE can help to support training and education of the local members. Local Chapters encourage EAGE membership in their region and support communication between the

EAGE Annual Report 2013-2014

local members and the EAGE head office. The EAGE Best Local Chapter Award 2013 has been granted to the Local Chapters Kyiv and Azerbaijan. The map below shows the distribution of the EAGE Local Chapters. Aside from its regular Local Chapters, EAGE has been developing Student Chapters throughout the world. In 2014 EAGE is happy to include two new Local Chapters in Kuwait and Beijing. For more information, please refer to page 6.

EAGE Green Fund An important development in EAGE’s emerging environmental strategy has been the launch of Green Steps, formally introduced for the first time at the Vienna Annual Meeting in May 2011. This programme, in response to membership wishes, brings together initiatives regarding EAGE’s events and operations including reduction and compensation of emissions, reducing nature source consumption, reducing and recycling waste and offering more sustainable facilities. In addition to earlier initiatives such as solar panels on the roof of its Head Office and conference and workshop proceedings on a reusable USB stick; two new initiatives were added to this series in 2014. In co-operation with Oasebos, the EAGE Green Fund has made a donation to protect 20,000 m2 of tropical rainforest in Costa Rica. The second initiative is in co-operation with Eole Water who, with support from the EAGE Green Fund, will install a patented water-making system in Madagascar which is able to produce drinking water through condensation of humid air.

EAGE & Social Media EAGE recognizes that social media is as a great opportunity to interact with members in creating, sharing and/ or exchanging information and ideas. It enables the Association to reach even more geoscientists, engineers and others outside its membership database. Since 2013 EAGE hosts a LinkedIn page, a Facebook page and a YouTube channel. In its LinkedIn profile, EAGE has several groups, including regional groups, the annual group, students group and the special interest groups: Young Professionals and Women in Geoscience. Each group has its own main topic, but shares information to create an interactive platform in which members can communicate, share suggestions and give their opinion about matters related to the geoscience world and EAGE. EAGE’s Facebook page gives last-minute news and photos and last but not least is the EAGE YouTube channel, from which you can access some excellent e-lectures. Experts on a range of subjects made their presentations in an electure format for roughly 20 minutes. The e-lectures are launched on a monthly basis and are available to view on EAGE’s YouTube channel.
